As someone who spent 16 years never leaving a 50-mile radius, when I started traveling again in 2021, I felt like someone who had just discovered something magical. So many places to see, so many things to experience in this wide world. Over the last three years, I’ve walked the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, seen the Eifel Tower in Paris, walked the streets of Trier in Germany. And I’m just getting started. To quote the late, great Jack Kerouac, “There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep rolling under the stars.”
The world is meant to be experienced, to be discovered, to be treasured. And all it takes is that first step, that decision to buy the ticket and get on the plane or to pack up the car and point it in the direction of somewhere new. Your life is your adventure, and travel adds color to the page. Why not make it epic?
Of course, not all of us have the time or the budget to gallivant off to parts unknown. But even exploring your own city can be inspiring. Finding new things to do, getting out of your comfort zone, creating an itinerary for your very own staycation can make you feel just as adventurous. Alexandria is full of hidden gems, fun excursions and great ways to spend a day or a weekend as a “tourist” at home. Book a hotel, see some sights, eat at places you’ve always thought might be fun “someday.” Have your adventure now, right here in Alexandria.
This issue is one dedicated to escaping the ordinary and finding your inner wanderer—wherever it might take you. We hope you’ll enjoy and be inspired, as we are, to live this big adventure both at home and anywhere else you can dream of going. Here’s to the stamps in your passports that are to come and the footprints you leave.

FOR THE CHILDREN
CELEBRATING THE
“CHILDREN ARE NOT THINGS TO BE MOLDED BUT ARE PEOPLE TO BE UNFOLDED.”
- Jess Lair (1927-2000)
American author and self-help movement leader
inWhile Kiwanis International was originally founded in 1915 as a networking organization for businessmen in the Detroit area, its mission changed in 1919 to one more focused on the future: children.
As the organization grew and added chapters throughout the U.S., more and more communities benefitted from its service-oriented ways. In 1921, Kiwanis Club of Washington, DC, sponsored the formation of a chapter in Alexandria. “Some of the city’s most progressive businessmen joined together and visited the Washington
Club at one of their weekly luncheons,” explains Kiwanis Club of Alexandria president Charles Augustine. “They learned about the spirit and merit of Kiwanis and went on to formally organize the Alexandria club on May 9, 1921.”
Kiwanis Club of Alexandria’s first real service project was to raise $1,000 for the Playground Association of Alexandria. That first project grew into additional programs and initiatives that would impact the youth of the community and afford them opportunities for a better future. “Alexandria Kiwanis has always dedicated itself to serving students within the city,” says Augustine. “Beginning in 1923, the club recognized the best students at Alexandria high school, awarding medals and entertaining them at our luncheon. The club continued to reward scholastic excellence for decades and continues to do so today.”

In fact, Kiwanis Club of Alexandria currently sponsors Key Clubs at local high schools to foster leadership skills and a commitment to service. The club awards over $40,000 each year in college scholarships to these students.
In 1924, Kiwanis Club of Alexandria held its first clinic for disabled children in need. Over the next decade, the club continued its work with these disadvantaged children by providing needed medical care. That care was expanded to babies in the 1930s, when the club sponsored a Baby Clinic. “The club later supported various individual children in need of medical care and continued to sponsor medical and dental clinics for local youth in need,” Augustine says. “Combined with the work of the club’s summer camp, a Kiwanis clinic treated 600 children and performed 70 operations over the course of the year in 1938.”
As time has progressed and the city has grown, the needs of its youth have also changed. With that has come changes to the club, as well. “We now solicit for grant applications so that the nonprofits in our community can receive the help that they need, and we can support them in those needs,” says Augustine. “As much as we have changed since our first meetings, we still have a mission focused on service—and now we are even more able to home in on the ways that we can better serve the youth of Alexandria.”
Kiwanis International—and, by extension, Kiwanis Club of Alexandria—are not only a nonprofit organization focused on service to the community, but they are also
completely volunteer led. “These kinds of organizations are vital, not only to serve our community where there may be gaps but also to bring community members together,” says Augustine. “The average Kiwanian makes an impact on the lives of 106 children. We need more Kiwanians!”
Across the 18 schools within the Alexandria City Public School system, there are currently more than 16,000

Kiwanis awards 32 grants to childcare centers that remained opened during COVID
students—many of whom are underserved and in need of the ways that Kiwanis Club of Alexandria works to better the opportunities available to the city’s youth. Of course, with so much need comes the challenge of funding. To raise these funds and help supplement their endowment, Kiwanis Club of Alexandria holds events throughout the year such as their annual President’s Night Gala in addition to selling peanuts around Christmas time and working with area businesses to conduct fun raffle events.
"Our money goes to other nonprofits that serve children... We currently fund nearly 40 nonprofits or programs in the city of Alexandria."
“Our money goes to other nonprofits that serve children,” explains Augustine. “We currently fund nearly 40 nonprofits or programs in the city of Alexandria. In 2022, we set out on a campaign to raise $50,000 to acknowledge and thank the childcare centers who remained open during COVID. Our goal was to provide
grants to these centers to celebrate their staff. We just about achieved our goal and were able to provide grants to 32 childcare centers or at-home daycares at an event on April 1, 2023. These organizations used the funds to provide luncheons, gifts and bonuses to thank their staff who worked tirelessly through the pandemic. These are some of the ways that we serve the community now and impact the future generations of the city.”

THE DR. ANGELA AUSTIN STORY
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY RASSI G. BORNEO, TIMELINE MEDIA
As someone who has always had a love for children, Dr. Angela Austin’s professional journey always seemed fated to focus on kids. “I used to want to be a kindergarten teacher because I absolutely love that age,” she says. “I’ve always loved working with children, and I also always knew I wanted to help people.”
The intersection of those two goals led her to pediatric dentistry, and the summer before her junior year in college, she spent time in Manhattan doing biomedical research, volunteering on Saturdays in a dental office. “I fell in love with the dental field from there,” she says. Since graduating from dental school in 2004 at the age of 25, Dr. Austin has made it her mission to provide excellent dental care, driven by her natural desire to help people as well as her affinity for working with children. “As a pediatric dentist, I love the fact that I have the important role of shaping a child’s view of the dentist and their relationship with oral hygiene. I take that very seriously. Prevention is important to me, and to intercept issues
before they arise or take care of them and re-direct the direction of their oral health care in a positive way is a major reason why I chose pediatric dentistry. And, like I said, I just love kids! The wonder in their eyes and seeing their excitement on a day-to-day basis will never get old.”
Naturally, running a pediatric dental practice comes with its challenges, the greatest of which has been, in Dr. Austin’s estimation, navigating business ownership during the pandemic and its aftermath. “It’s been a true test to any business owner’s resilience,” she admits.
Despite these challenges and the others that inherently arise with being a practitioner, she finds immense reward in creating a supportive and fun environment for her team as well as her patients. “I love being able to supply well-paying jobs and treat my team with respect, creating a fun, family-like environment that everyone enjoys,” she says. “And have I mentioned how much I love kids? Seriously, being around children all day, every day is a true joy for me.”
While Dr. Austin lives in Burke, her connection to Alexandria runs deep; and her love for her community is evident in her support for locally owned area businesses. “Alexandria is an incredible city,” she says. “I love how we all come together to support one another—whether that support is needed personally or in business. We have a tight-knit community, and I’m so grateful that we are in a city that is so loving. We all want the best for each other, and I believe that part of making that happen comes in supporting the small businesses in the community. As a small business owner, I understand how important the support of our communities is, and I’m so grateful for all the support we’ve received over the 13 years we’ve been in business here. Over these last few years, both during the pandemic and after, is has become even more evident how fragile business ownership is, and I feel it’s important to love and support our neighbors so we can all be there for each other!”
Dr. Austin is incredibly drawn to unique shops in the area such as Mint Condition and She’s Unique, where she enjoys finding special pieces and jewelry that spark joy. “Mint Condition is a lovely consignment shop, and finding the perfect piece is always a score!” she enthuses. “I’m, also in love with She’s Unique. The jewelry is truly special, and I’ve gotten so many compliments on my necklace stacks!”
Beyond the passions of her professional life, Dr. Austin is big on all things health and wellness. She loves a good sauna and spa day but also appreciates the natural beauty of Northern Virginia with her family. "Most of my free time is spent taking the kids for walks or hikes, exercising and navigating my kids’ sports,” shares the mother of three.
Busy as it may keep her, Dr. Austin balances motherhood with running three dental offices, sharing the load of raising a family with her “lovely husband,” Jay. “We are busy people!” she says with a laugh. “I love being able to say I’ve navigated this motherhood thing while owning three offices without a nanny—but I’ll admit, I wake up every day and look in the mirror wondering how! As crazy as it gets, I’m just so grateful for health and a sound mind, and I’m sure that plays a big part of being able to juggle so much. Also, being a pediatric dentist and a mother puts such a
unique perspective on how I relate to moms now. I get it. There are times we forget to brush their teeth at night. It will be okay! Motherhood is such a beautiful journey, and I’m just grateful for the ride.”
"I love how we all come together to support one another— whether that support is needed personally or in business. We have a tight-knit community, and I’m so grateful that we are in a city that is so loving."
That practical but relaxed approach to life is also evident in Dr. Austin’s travel habits. An advocate of packing light, she has mastered the art of traveling with nothing more than a carry-on. “I’ve gotten so good at this!” she says knowingly. “I’m a carry-on only type of girl—and I’m girliegirl, so lots of skirts and dresses for me.”
That said, Dr. Austin recommends planning outfits around a few versatile pieces and keeping it simple: “The key is to pack outfits that you can wear the same shoes with. I wear my heavier or bulkier shoes—like boots or sneakers—on the plane so I don’t waste precious suitcase space.”
Dr. Austin's philosophy on packing is all about efficiency and avoiding the classic trap of overpacking. “One tip I give is to pack your suitcase by thinking about each day,” she advises. “What are you doing that day? What are you wearing to breakfast? Are you going to the pool afterwards? What about after that? If you think of each day you’re away by imagining how you’re looking at each part of the day, it’s so much easier to pack, and much less likely you’ll overpack!”
Her practical and stylish methodology ensures that Dr. Austin is always prepared for any occasion, from family trips to getaways with her husband or a girls’ weekend.
STYLING GOES BEYOND CLOTHES, AND AS A MASTER OF THE NECKLACE STACK, KATYA ANANIEVA OF SHE’S UNIQUE HAS SOME HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW TO GET A LOOK YOU’LL LOVE.
MIXING METALS:
“Don't shy away from mixing metals in your necklace stack. Combining different metals like gold, silver and rose gold can add depth and interest to your look. It's all about balance, so consider the overall tone and feel you want to achieve.”
VARIED LENGTHS:
“Stacking necklaces of different lengths helps to create a dynamic look. Start with a choker and add longer pieces, ensuring each one stands out. Aim for a gradual increase in length to draw the eye down and complement your outfit’s neckline.”
CHAIN STYLES AND WEIGHTS:
“Mixing chain styles and weights can add texture to your stack. Pair delicate chains with chunkier, bolder pieces for contrast or stick to similar weights for a more cohesive look. Consider the style of your outfit and the occasion when choosing chains.”
Hummingbird Restaurant, with the iconic Monte Durham as host, recently invited the Alexandria community together for a special cocktail hour in support of the National Breast Center Foundation's Walk to Bust Cancer. This event raised awareness and funds to assist local patients and families facing breast cancer. Led by Dr. David Weintritt and Director Martha Carucci, the foundation provides discounted services for diagnosis and treatment, ensuring critical care reaches those in need.
Guests enjoyed having their pictures taken with "Mary's Angel Wings," small bites, and signature pink cocktails. The gathering was not only a celebration of strength but a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against breast cancer. Proceeds from the evening supported the 9th Annual Walk to Bust Cancer, which will take place on October 20.
AN ALEXANDRIAN IN PARIS
EXPLORING THE ENCHANTING WORLDS OF HISTORY + HAUTE COUTURE , ELIZABETH KEANEY BRINGS A BIT OF ALEXANDRIA TO THE CITY OF LIGHTS
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
LISA DAMICO
Like the best-constructed clothes, Elizabeth Keaney’s life is interwoven with the threads of her varied passions: history, education, and fashion. As the Youth and Family Program Coordinator for the office of Historic Alexandria, Keaney’s days are spent working with students, teachers, and families, helping them engage with the history of Alexandria and understand how the past has shaped the present. “In the museum field, there is no typical day,” she says. “Some days, I’m helping our museum educators prepare for a student visit. Other days, I get to join them for an outreach program. There is also a great deal of collaboration in planning new programs and events, so no two days are alike—which is fantastic!”
This variety, of course, keeps Keaney’s work exciting and dynamic—and her time on the clock engaging. The collaborative nature of her role also means she is constantly brainstorming new ideas and working with others to create impactful educational experiences for everyone who visits the museum. “I thrive on that energy,” she adds. “Each interaction, each event is a new chance to make history come alive for someone, whether it’s a child discovering their first artifact or a family engaging in a hands-on workshop. Those moments are what make this job so rewarding.”
Keaney’s love for museums started in childhood, setting her on a course that led to where she stands today. “Museums are places where people can learn in unconventional ways and often discover a love for a subject they didn’t know they had,” she says. “To be a facilitator of those experiences is truly amazing, and I consider it an honor to be a part of that. I was fortunate to have grown up in a family that valued museums. Some of my earliest memories are visiting the National Gallery of Art with my grandmother and historic sites with my mom. Those experiences shaped my understanding of the world and fueled my passion for history and culture.”
Much like her love for museums, Keaney’s passion for fashion also began at an early age. “I think I’ve always loved beautiful clothes and being able to use clothing to express myself,” she observes. “I was three or four when I told my mother I wanted to be a ‘fancy lady’ for Halloween. There’s a great photo of me with a stole, a ‘grown-up’ handbag, and my hair piled up on my head. I’m just beaming! My grandmother also made me handsmocked dresses when I was small, and I once went a whole summer refusing to wear anything else. Those vibrant memories of fashion have lingered, shaping my personal style over the years. In my previous job
“MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, FASHION LETS YOU FIND YOUR STYLE. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL CONFIDENT AND POWERFUL?
THAT’S WHAT SHOULD INFLUENCE WHAT YOU WEAR."
ELIZABETH KEANEY
giving tours at Mount Vernon, I was lucky enough to wear handmade historic gowns that were exquisite. They were key to my work engaging visitors about life in the 18th century for a wealthy plantation owner. Whatever the period, fashion has always been something that allows a person to share their values and personality. You don’t necessarily need a huge budget to express your style—especially here in Alexandria. We have incredible boutiques and fabulous consignment and second-hand shops. I love hunting for hidden gems and unique pieces that tell a story.”
Recently, Keaney went through a career shift that left her feeling both unsure about what her next chapter would hold but also optimistic—and then serendipity stepped in, dressed in fabulous clothes. “I opened my email and saw a message from Lisa Damico, whom I had worked with in 2020,” Keaney recalls. “She’s a local photographer, and I’d worked with her to do some photos for my online dating profile. She is incredible—she assembles a great team for styling, hair, and makeup and can put clients at ease so that she captures their best selves.
“The email said Lisa was planning her first destination photoshoot—in Paris—and she was looking for two subjects to shoot,” Keaney goes on. “I jumped on the opportunity immediately. Paris is the epitome of fashion and history, and I couldn’t pass up the chance to be part of something so extraordinary.”
While the trip was brief, the four nights that Keaney spent on location in Paris were nothing short of magical. “Lisa was a fantastic organizer,” Keaney notes. “We had a lovely picnic on the Canal St. Martin the first night, and she organized a champagne cruise on the Seine for the second. Each day was filled with not just photoshoots but also immersive experiences in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We had our photoshoots scheduled as well as some additional optional activities. I did a solo day trip to Reims to see the cathedral and visit the champagne houses, and I also took myself to the ballet at the Palais Garnier after my photoshoot—of course, I had to take that glam hair and makeup out on the town!”
Meeting Damico’s team was another highlight of the trip, as was spending some time with Monica, the other client who’d opted to take advantage of an opportunity for a trip to Paris. “I usually travel alone,” says Keaney. “I love it—one day I want to open a solo-gal travel company in France—but it was fun to have new friends to explore Paris with. Plus, Lisa was great about finding fantastic patisseries and bistros, ensuring we experienced the best of French cuisine.”
While it was her first destination fashion shoot, it was not Keaney’s first trip to the City of Lights. “My first visit was in October of 2021,” she explains. “I’d wanted to go to France since I was a child, so it was a dream come true. This trip was my third, and I’ve found that every visit is more delightful than the last. I’m always excited to go back and discover something new. I’m already planning next year’s trip—and it includes a rave at Versailles!” Her enthusiasm is palpable, and it reflects her love for both adventure and the arts.
Keaney’s wardrobe for the shoot included a few dresses from Unique Vintage—a favorite brand of hers—and “a big, floofy tulle dress” she found on Amazon, all of which she paired with shoes from White House/Black Market, Miz Mooz, and a pair of bubblegum pink Chuck Taylors. “More than anything else, fashion lets you find your style,” Keaney says. “What makes you feel confident and powerful? That’s what should influence what you wear. For this photoshoot, I wanted it to be over-the-top fairytale. The rest of the trip, I incorporated a lot of that—think bows and tulle skirts. I don’t think I looked terribly Parisian, but I felt fabulous! And that’s what fashion is: being true to yourself and finding your joy.”
Keaney’s experience in Paris encapsulates the beauty of pursuing one’s passions and the unexpected turns life can take. From the charming streets of Alexandria to the romantic allure of Paris, her journey is a testament to the power of self-expression through history and fashion. Whether it’s facilitating a love for history in others or showcasing her style in a stunning city, Elizabeth Keaney exemplifies the vibrant spirit of an Alexandrian in Paris.
Rosé Survival Guide
SIP THROUGH FALL WITH A NEBBIOLO TWIST
Don’t write about rosé. Don’t write about rosé. Argh. I am a natural-born contrarian, but when it’s boiling out, it’s hard not to write about rosé. I mean there’s Chablis? Boring. Fino Sherry? That appeals to all two of us out there. Italian whites? Verdicchio would be a pro move. But, no. Let’s do it. Let’s talk about rosé because it will be the most reached for wine as summer bears down upon Alexandria. I’ve also been on the record here beating the drum for complex age-worthy rosé. To clarify, now is not the time for those. No, we need crisp, salty, and mineral-inflected and we need it now. Ice cold. The consumer does face a dilemma this year, however. The current batch of rosé wines hitting the market in this category are going to hail from the 2023 growing season. 2023 was a problematic growing season in most wine regions the world over. Record heat, drought, record-setting downpours. You can bet that one or several of these events took place in your favorite wine region. We should not
forget, that while “Rosé” has become a brand, good wine will always be an agricultural product.
All is not lost—there are certainly some great rosés that have “weathered the storm.” Consumers should just be advised to exercise a little caution. A safe bet is to find a wine merchant that you trust and ask their opinions. Failing that, I’ve seen the most successful rosés so far this year tend to come from Italy and are usually made from Nebbiolo. The wine I’d like to recommend to you today is the Nebbiolo Rosato “Caterina” from Cantina Gaggiano 2023 ($16), which hails from a region referred to as the Alto Piemonte in Italy.
You would be forgiven if the mention of “Nebbiolo” and “Italy” only conjured wines from Barolo and Barbaresco in your mind. The wines produced in these communes are compelling—simultaneously powerful and graceful with

PERFECT PAIRING
A great recipe to pair with the Nebbiolo Rosato “Caterina” from Cantina Gaggiano 2023 would be Grilled Peach and Burrata Salad with Prosciutto and Arugula.
This dish complements the wine’s structure and bright acidity with the sweetness of grilled peaches, the creaminess of burrata, the saltiness of prosciutto, and the peppery bite of arugula. The flavors are balanced and light, making it an ideal match for a summer rosé.
haunting perfumes. Less than 150 years ago, however, the same association would have brought you approximately 100 miles north to a place like Gattinara or Ghemme in the foothills of the Alps, 20 or so miles north of the city of Vercelli along the river Sesia, part of the area collectively referred to as Alto (or High) Piemonte. With its vineyards initially planted by the Romans as early as the 2nd century
A.D., the Alto Piemonte boasted approximately 100,000 acres under vine at its peak in the 19th century and was far more widely planted at the time than the currently more famous (lower) Piemonte.
By the end of the Second World War, the region would find itself reeling, in a standing eight count of sorts, with the majority of its vineyards abandoned after suffering successive environmental disasters and given the draw of more lucrative factory careers—only roughly 2,000 acres remained under vine. The wines of Alto Piemonte are not of mere historical interest, however. While more southern regions are grappling with preserving the character of their wines in the face of climate change, Alto Piemonte, with its higher elevation, cooler climate, and acidic soils, stands to benefit from warmer summers.
Grilled Peach and Burrata Salad with Prosciutto and Arugula
Ingredients:
• 2 ripe peaches, halved and pitted
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 4 cups fresh arugula
• 4 ounces burrata cheese
• 6 slices prosciutto
• 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions:
1. Grill the Peaches: Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Brush the peach halves with olive oil and grill them cut-side down for 2-3 minutes, until grill marks form. Flip and grill for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat.
2. Assemble the Salad: On a large serving platter, spread the arugula evenly. Tear the burrata into pieces and distribute them over the arugula. Arrange the grilled peach halves and prosciutto slices around the plate.
3. Finish with Balsamic Glaze: Drizzle the salad with balsamic glaze and season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle fresh basil leaves over the top for a burst of herbal freshness. Serve immediately, pairing it with a chilled glass of Nebbiolo Rosato “Caterina.”
This recipe highlights the wine’s fruity and floral notes, with the grilled peaches enhancing the stone fruit flavors in the rosé, and the creamy burrata balancing the wine’s acidity. The savory prosciutto adds a touch of saltiness that complements the wine’s mineral undertones.
Cantina Gaggiano (say Gaa-jha-no) is a relatively recent endeavor (2014) of a family whose history mirrors that of the region itself. Marco and Caludio Fabris founded the operation with the purchase of 1.7 acres in the appellation of Gattinara, followed by 5.6 acres in Bramaterra, and 3.7 acres in Lessona in 2016. They were backed and guided by their late father, Sandrine, who passed away in 2020 in a tractor accident. While he had made his living operating a laundry service, he gained a passion for vineyard work from his father, Gervasio, who left his
vines in Bramaterra for the promise of factory work in the ‘60’s, like most in the region. Unlike most, however, he continued farming two acres of vines belonging to his village’s church and making wine for both the church and his family.
The red wines from Gaggiano all bear the names of the Fabris family members and have the marks of a winery to watch. The Gattinara “Timoteo” was a standout at the Nebbiolo class we held at Revel last winter—and there were some real heavy hitters in that lineup. The Rosato is no different, though it carries no pretense. It is 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Vespolina, and 10% Croatina (the supporting varieties of the region) and is designated as “Coste della Sesia,” which is a broader appellation encompassing the outskirts of Gattinara and Lessona that also allows blending between the two. After a few hours of skin contact, the wine is bled off into stainless steel tanks for fermentation and maturation. Nebbiolo lends structure to this rosé, which is often sorely missing. Blood orange and rose petals are shot through with exotic spices and crushed rocks. Savory citrus peel and green apple freshness on the finish keep you coming back for more. It is just the thing for light summer salads (don’t touch that oven!) or just heat-slaking refreshments.
Unwined. Where surprises await and exemplary service is the norm. Top quality, hand-selected wine, craft beer, gourmet, and gifts smart team that tastes everything and tailors each recommendation to suit you.

FOUNDER + CREATIVE DIRECTOR | AMERICAN IN PARIS
STORY BY KELLIE GUNDERMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY IGDA WARNER
In the heart of Old Town, Alexandria, Alexandra Alvarez de Toledo has crafted a haven for fashion enthusiasts with her boutique, American In Paris. As Founder and Creative Director, Alex brings a lifetime of global fashion experience to every corner of her shop. Her distinct style, which she describes as eclectic, curated, and evergreen, resonates throughout the store. Alex isn’t just about following trends; she’s about creating them. With an eye for unique pieces and an unwavering commitment to quality, she curates collections that reflect her journeys and inspirations. And that extends to the essentials she keeps on hand every day.
Whether she’s jetting off to source the latest collections or meeting clients in Alexandria, Alex’s handbag is an eclectic mix, just like her store. First up is a pair of ballet flats—perfect for long days on cobblestones or a quick
change after a night out. “They’re my go-to for keeping things comfortable yet chic,” she says. She also never leaves home without her Sunny Legs instant leg color corrector, an insider favorite from her boutique, which gives her that effortlessly sun-kissed look year-round.
But Alex’s bag wouldn’t be complete without her Bespoke
notebook, where she jots down design ideas and inspirations. “My work is all about storytelling through fashion,” she shares, and her notebook is where the story begins. She carries a signature scent, L’Amour by Rouge Rouge, which reminds her of Paris and the early days of her career. And of course, there’s always a pair of vintage sunglasses tucked inside. “They’re a bit of my
armor,” she laughs. “No matter where I am, they make me feel like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”
BOOTS MADE JUST FOR YOU
This season, Alex is especially excited about the latest addition to her AIP Bespoke offerings: hand-made custom equestrian and polo boots, straight from Argentina’s most renowned boot makers, La Casa de las Botas and Antonio Vicario. Alex has long admired these artisans for their attention to detail and craftsmanship, which is why she’s thrilled to bring their work stateside. “These aren’t just boots,” she says. “They’re experiences. They’re custom-made for you, from your foot measurements down to the leather selection, creating a pair that’s yours and yours alone.”
These exclusive boots made their debut on September 24th, at an event where guests got a taste of Argentina and were among the first to order their bespoke pair. “It’s been a dream to offer something so personal and luxurious,” Alex says. For her, this offering is all about giving her clients access to unique experiences that go beyond fashion. These bespoke boots are available to order. Visit the store or call to make an appointment to be measured. Boots take about 4-6 weeks.
FASHIONING A LEGACY
With each carefully selected item in her boutique, Alex pays homage to her roots and her passion for slow, meaningful fashion. Her goal is to help her clients curate wardrobes that not only reflect their personalities but also celebrate craftsmanship from around the world. She lives by the idea that once you know the rules of good taste, don’t fear breaking them. Alex encourages her clients to embrace a style that makes them feel confident and comfortable. It’s this philosophy that has cemented American In Paris as a beloved fixture in the Alexandria fashion scene.
Alex’s approach to fashion is not just about clothes—it’s about creating a space where people can feel inspired, where they can discover pieces that tell a story, and where they can indulge in the artistry of fashion. She’s built American In Paris into a reflection of herself: timeless, effortlessly chic, and always a little unexpected.
SO... WHAT'S IN HER BAG?
LOUIS VUITTON ZIPPY WALLET. A classic choice, this elegant wallet combines style with functionality. It’s where Alex keeps her essentials organized, proving that luxury can be practical.
NARS ORGASM COMPACT. A cult favorite, this versatile blush and highlighter compact delivers a natural, radiant glow. It’s Alex’s go-to for a quick touch-up, adding a hint of warmth and shimmer to her complexion.
ON-THE-GO SEWING KIT & LAUNDRESS DE-PILLER.
Alex is always prepared for fashion emergencies with this handy sewing kit and de-piller. From loose buttons to pesky fabric fuzz, these essentials ensure she’s always polished, no matter what.

EXPLORING THE BEATEN PATH + REDISCOVERING YOURSELF BEYOND BURNOUT
BROUGHT TO YOU BY HEALTHY MINDS THERAPY
BY KELLIE GUNDERMAN
In today’s relentless grind culture, burnout has become a familiar but often ignored visitor. We push through, thinking it’s a phase that will pass or a sign of personal failure rather than recognizing it as a warning signal.
“Exploring The Beaten Path” delves into this experience, examining the often-overlooked road to recovery and rediscovery after burnout. This editorial invites you to explore the beaten path that many take and to find healing by reconnecting with your passions, setting boundaries, and reshaping your sense of self.
Understanding Burnout: When Overdrive Becomes the Norm
Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of prolonged stress and overwhelm, usually from overworking or neglecting personal needs. For many, burnout creeps in quietly. It might start with exhaustion, frustration, or the feeling that every day is just a cycle of tasks with no fulfillment. When your mental and physical reserves are tapped out, the very things that used to bring you joy can feel burdensome.
Burnout is more than just fatigue; it’s an erosion of self, a gradual depletion of the mental and emotional resources that make us feel whole. Recognizing the signs early can be life-changing, but once burnout takes hold, the journey to recovery requires intention and patience.
Embracing the Path of Rediscovery
Recovering from burnout isn’t a matter of rest alone. It involves a conscious effort to reconnect with oneself and redefine what fulfillment looks like. For many, burnout is a chance to realign with core values and goals. Why did you choose your path in the first place? What were the things that inspired and motivated you before burnout took hold?
This journey often involves stepping back and reconnecting with the activities, relationships, and habits that once brought joy. It might mean setting boundaries that were previously neglected, reclaiming your time, and learning to say no without guilt. Rediscovery means tuning in to what matters and tuning out the pressures to be constantly productive.

Rebuilding Balance:
Finding Joy in the Little Things
Part of exploring the beaten path after burnout is learning to find joy in smaller, simpler experiences. People who have walked this path often describe the transformative power of embracing mindfulness, gratitude, and presence. Whether it’s a quiet morning walk, an afternoon spent painting, or reading a book that reignites your curiosity, these small moments of peace become powerful tools in rebuilding a balanced life.
This phase is also about rebuilding relationships—both with others and with oneself. It’s about redefining what you expect from your work, your hobbies, and the people around you. It’s a chance to ask yourself what truly makes you happy, what gives you a sense of purpose, and to realign your actions accordingly.
Crafting Your Own Toolkit for Resilience
Once you’ve begun to understand your triggers and what leads you toward burnout, you can start building a toolkit for resilience. This toolkit is unique to you. It could include regular self-care routines, like journaling to process emotions, setting digital detox days, or even finding a therapist who can offer guidance and support.
Maintaining your mental health isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about being equipped to face them without losing yourself. Setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, and giving yourself permission to slow down are all essential steps to building this resilience.
Navigating the Path Ahead: Finding Support for Your Journey

FONTAINE TRAVEL IS HELPING TRAVELERS EXPLORE THE WORLD, ONE FRIENDSHIP AT A TIME
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
As an avid traveler, Heidi Parsont has a love for globetrotting that makes her an incredible resource for planning a perfect trip—and she’s turned that passion into a business. “I love the opportunity to meet new people, learn about different cultures, try new foods and understand what the language says about the specific country,” she says. “I’ve visited more than 50 countries and have lived on several continents. After spending more than 20 years planning trips for my family and friends, I finally decided to become a travel agent.”
After opening Fontaine Travel in 2021, Parsont gained a reputation for her expert level of knowledge planning the perfect friends’ getaways. “People are so busy with work and families that they find they don’t have good, quality time with their friends,” she says. “Travel is a great way to step back and relax among those who know you best. You can really unwind when you are with people who just want to spend time together and enjoy the company, in a fun and interesting location.”
Because of the options in amenities and price ranges available, Parsont says all-inclusive resorts are a frequent destination for friend groups. “I’ve sent groups to adultsonly all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the DR, Jamaica and Aruba,” she says. “Additionally, many clients who are 50+ are choosing European river cruising as a way to spend quality time with their friends. They can be more active on river cruises, with daily excursions in the cities along the river. I’ve also booked hotel rooms in big cities like Paris and London, where groups can meet and enjoy a city adventure with lots of excursions, fine dining and spa visits.”
As diverse as own travel has been, Parsont is aware of any complications that might arise with group travel for women. “I’ve witnessed a multitude of cultures and experiences, which makes me more aware of the need to educate my clients,” she says. “I’ve been in countries where women and men are considered equal as well as others that marginalize women and require them to cover themselves. It’s important to know your audience and have a good handle on the precautions that one might need for a given destination. As a travel agent who works a great deal with women clients, I always want people to understand the inherent risks of travel, as well as the specific precautions that women might need to take anywhere that they are visiting.”
