20 | VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

COVID-19 changed a lot of things, one of those being the use of technology. Three and a half years later, we have adopted new ways to utilize online resources. Remote and hybrid work schedules are now widely accepted. One can now see doctors or counselors virtually. It doesn’t take extensive research to learn that the use of social media and other streaming services has also increased since 2020.

A Troubling Trend: The idea that you can watch a video or read a list of symptoms & diagnose yourself with a mental disorder.

The deepening implementation of technology into our daily lives, coupled with the societal shift towards mental health awareness, has resulted in a troubling trend -- the idea that you can watch a video or read a list of symptoms and diagnose yourself with a mental health disorder. Our physical healthcare providers caution us against this practice, especially Googling symptoms, lest we connect a simple dehydration headache to a rare or lifethreatening illness. As a mental health provider, I warn you to apply the same level of discernment to your emotional and cognitive woes. I assure you I am not here to rally against social media, but I am here to share some clinical indicators that your mental health could use some professional attention and some tips on how to curate your social media feed so that you are exposed to helpful insights, rather than harmful misinformation. These are two clinical indicators that indicate you need a mental health tune up:

1. You are extremely distressed about your symptoms. You are consistently worried, experiencing anxiety, stress, mood swings, low motivation or anger outbursts. You feel out of control or unable to engage with life as you did prior to the onset of your symptoms.

2. Your symptoms impair functioning in a major area of life. This refers to responsibilities related to school, work, friendships, family relationships or personal hygiene. Due to your severe fear of judgment from others, you may be socially isolating and feel lonely, but don’t know how to overcome the anxiety that is prevening you from engaging with friends. Additionally, your low mood and lack of motivation may be keeping your from mustering the willpower to accomplish everyday, selfcare tasks like showering or brushing your teeth in the morning. 21

| VIPALXMAG.COM

Another reason why Google or social media self-diagnosing is dangerous is because almost every diagnosis in the DSM-5 (the official medical text from which mental health disorders are cataloged) has symptoms that fall under the typical human experience. Anxiety is a great example here; anxiety is a completely healthy emotion. In fact, it’s our body’s warning system. If we did not have some level of anxiety, it would indicate we do not care about anything. Anxiety only becomes problematic when it is too intense for too long or when this warning system overreacts to things we don’t need to be protected from or concerned about.

It can be comforting to find someone on the internet who has had a similar experience or an explanation for the emotional discomfort we have been feeling. However, it is our responsibility to use the resource of the internet to our advantage rather than to absorb and spread misinformation. I implore you to couple your curiosity about mental health with your critical-thinking skills. If a certain set of symptoms or a possible diagnosis seems to mirror your own experience, dig in, find reputable sources, do your research and approach a mental health provider with your questions before coming to a conclusion.

"Perfectly healthy humans experience mood fluctuations, periodic difficulties with motivation or attention span, can get overstimulated and/or feel awkward in social situations in many instances over their lifespan. This does not mean they have a chronic mental health disorder." There are so many things that go into diagnosing, which is why not everyone is qualified to do it. It can’t be boiled down to a checklist of symptoms. A licensed provider has the clinical insight and training to give clarity about symptoms or provide an accurate diagnosis. While mental health has become more accessible and therapy-talk has become more widespread, it is still important to consult with professionals in the field. Google and social media are great places to start if you’re curious about things, but such sources are not the end-all, be-all of how to approach your mental healthcare. When you come across a video or list of symptoms you resonate with, seek out more information from licensed providers. There are hundreds, potentially thousands, of reputable practitioners and mental health agencies who are spreading evidence-based information online. Follow their Instagrams and Facebook profiles to learn more about all things mental health; like attachment style, boundary-setting skills and warning signs for suicide.

2019 HERMANN J. WIEMER

“ H J W VI NEYARD" RIESLING W/ SPICED MAPLE PORK TENDERLOIN RECIPE BROUGHT TO YOU BY UNWINED

|

STORY BY BRIAN ACTON

28 | VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

Every wine professional is inundated with questions about Thanksgiving pairings this time of year. Honestly, the Thanksgiving plate is so diverse that you can, for the most part, drink what you like. There are certain wine and food pairings that are obvious clashes though, like raw oysters and Cabernet Sauvignon or a bold tannic red with your delicate turkey, bitter brussels sprouts and sweet potato casserole. Champagne is one of the most flexible choices. Outside of Champagne, another flexible pairing wine is Riesling. Given that this is also an American holiday, I couldn’t recommend the 2019 Hermann J. Wiemer “HJW Vineyard” Riesling more. Hermann Wiemer found himself in New York's Finger Lakes in the 1960s, having grown up in Germany's Mosel Valley and after having interned in the Pfalz, along Germany’s border with Alsace, France. His mother's family had been vine growers in the Mosel for generations and his father worked at the leading Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel. Here, Hermann learned to graft vinifera vines to American rootstock by hand. This proved crucial in the Finger Lakes, which experiences winter freezes that can threaten this vulnerable graft. By 1973, Hermann planted a nursery on the property he purchased the previous year. By 1981, he hauled in his first harvest, having been serendipitously let go from his previous gig. The nursery continues to this day, with an annual output of more than 300,000 vines, which truly sets their operations apart

from others across the nation. Fred Merwarth, current winemaker and co-owner, joined the fray in 2001 and became Hermann's sole assistant after the previous winemaker left later that year. Fred has worked at Wiemer ever since, albeit, with a unique

level of devotion and meticulousness—the sort of which lands you on various tastemaker, top winery and winemaker of the year lists. Herbicides were eliminated in 2003, in favor of cover crops and organic fertilizers. Fred and his business partner, Oskar Bynke, took over the estate after Hermann's retirement in 2007. Biodynamic viticulture trials began in 2015—no small feat in a region with a climate like the Finger Lakes. The winery is on 29

the cusp of certification from the biodynamic certification body, Demeter. What sets these wines apart from others in the Finger Lakes, though, especially their Rieslings, is their purity of fruit and balance. Nowhere is that more evident than in their HJW Vineyard Riesling. The HJW vineyard is set back from and resides at 700 meters above Seneca Lake. It is home to Hermann’s original plantings of Chardonnay and Riesling, dating back to 1977 and 1978. The site’s shallow soil leaves the shale bedrock exposed. When the poor soils are coupled with the site’s cooler exposition, you have the elements of a world-class Riesling in the making—all the fruit the warm summers of the Finger Lakes can give you, framed by the stony minerality that is the hallmark of cool climate winemaking. The 2019 HJW Vineyard Riesling is brimming with ripe tree and stone fruit aromas, offset by white flowers—pear schnapps meets ripe apricots and honeysuckle. The palate is juicy, but firms up on the stony, nervy finish. It is just the thing to match the intensity of your fall flavors and then whisk them away with its mouthwatering acidity, leaving you ready for the next bite. As the holidays approach, a wonderful pairing for the 2019 Herman J. Weimer HJW Vineyard Riesling is a spiced maple glazed pork tenderloin, served with roasted Brussels sprouts and apples and sweet potato mash. The wine's vibrant acidity and fruity notes will harmonize with the sweetness of the maple-glazed pork and the natural sweetness of the apples. It's floral and aromatic characteristics will also enhance the thyme seasoning in this dish. The roasted Brussels sprouts provide a savory element that complements the wine's acidity, while the cream sweet potato mash adds a velvety texture and a touch of sweetness that balances the wine's crispness.

8. Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. 9. Serve the sliced pork loin alongside the roasted Brussels sprouts, apple slices, and sweet potato mash. Garnish with fresh parsley.

INGRE D I E NT S: • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 lbs pork loin 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper, to taste 1 lb Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved 2 apples, cored and sliced 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup milk Fresh parsley, for garnish

INS T RUC T I O N S: 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. 3. Place the pork loin on the prepared baking sheet and brush it generously with the mustard-maple glaze. 4. In a separate bowl, toss the Brussels sprouts and apple slices with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Arrange them on the baking sheet around the pork loin. 5. Roast in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) and the Brussels sprouts are tender. 6. While the pork is roasting, place the sweet potato cubes in a large pot of salted boiling water. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return to the pot. 7. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper to the pot with the sweet potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. 30 | VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

SIPS + SECRETS: A SPEAKEASY NIGHT

Photography by Lucia Smith The Lee-Fendall House Museum recently launched its landmark 50th year as a museum by taking guests back in time to the Roaring Twenties. Built in 1785, the museum has become a mainstay of Alexandria’s preservation community. Sips + Secrets serves as an annual fundraiser to maintain the house as well as support the landmark’s rotating exhibits and programs. Guests were dressed to impress and danced the night away to live jazz by Accidental Red. Dance troupe Fidget Feet was also in attendance, offering dance lessons to all interested flappers and mobsters before judging the Charleston dance contest. Also featured was a silent auction, various door prizes, and, of course, no Speakeasy Night would be complete without 1920s-style cocktails.

“In the mosaic of experiences that the military offered, I found resilience and a tenacity that can't be taught in any classroom,” she explains. “The discipline, the unwavering commitment to a mission and the camaraderie spirit became the foundation upon which I built my business acumen. Every challenge and every high-pressure situation in the service was a lesson in leadership, strategy and adaptability.” Strategy and adaptability, in fact, were two very important factors in her development of Cowo & Crèche. “I recognized a gap, a need,” Nurse-Kingsley says. “I've always believed in the power of community and collaboration. Marrying that with the necessity of childcare, especially in today's fast-paced world, felt relevant and revolutionary. I’ve found that coworking bears similarities to the military in that, at the heart of both, there is a shared sense of purpose. There's a rhythm, a mutual respect and an understanding that everyone brings something unique to the table. It's about collective growth, not just individual achievement.”

S

hamena Nurse-Kingsley has spent the better part of the past 20 years serving her nation—first, in five years of active duty with the US Air Force, followed by 14 years as an employee the federal government. As a female Veteran, time in active duty gave her a unique experience that she carried with her into her new journey as the founder and owner of Cowo & Crèche, a coworking space that offers childcare.

"I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN THE POWER OF COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION. MARRYING THAT WITH THE NECESSITY OF CHILDCARE FELT RELEVANT AND REVOLUTIONARY. " - SHAMENA Much like Nurse-Kingsley herself, a great many Veterans choose the entrepreneurial life when leaving the military, which she feels is the result of the “intensity of commitment, the rigor of discipline and the exhilaration of overcoming adversity” that Veterans experience during time in the service. “Entrepreneurship, in many ways, mirrors that,” she says. “It's about carving a path, shouldering responsibility and turning vision into reality. It's a realm where ideas are birthed, challenges are met head-on and where every small victory echoes the triumphs of service.” Nurse-Kingsley and her husband are raising three children, ages

four, five and 18. Naturally, gift giving at Christmas can be a challenge. “Gift-giving, for me, is all about intention and meaning,” she says. “I lean towards experiences or keepsakes that tell a story. A gift isn't about price tags. It's about the emotion it evokes and the memories it creates; something that stands as a testament to the relationship.” 40 | VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

... COWORKING BEARS SIMILARITIES TO THE MILITARY. AT THE HEART OF BOTH, THERE IS A SHARED SENSE OF PURPOSE. THERE'S A RYTHM... IT'S ABOUT COLLABORATIVE GROWTH, NOT JUST INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT.

As a Veteran, Nurse-Kingsley strongly advocates for supporting local businesses and Veteran and Military spouse-owned businesses. “It’s supporting dreams, passion and community,” she says. “Supporting Veteran and Military spouse-owned businesses is a salute to their service, their journey and the spirit of perseverance they embody.”

"Supporting Veteran and Military spouse-owned businesses is a salute to their service, their journey and the spirit of perseverance they embody."

US NAVAL SEA CADETS LEARN SERVICE, TRAINING AND TEAMWORK story by DAW N K L AVO N | photography courtesy of U S N AVA L S E A C A D E T C O R P S A sense of service—that’s what the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps organization develops in its students. Founded by the US Navy to build leaders of character, the organization’s 5,500 cadets, ages 10 to 18, learn self-discipline, service to others, accountability and patriotism. “I can think of nothing more important than preparing the next group of adults for success in society,” said Andy Lennon, US Naval Sea Cadet Corps executive director. “Our adolescents are the group that needs to grow in confidence so that they can become productive, responsible Americans.” Sea Cadets undergo a structured training program that covers various aspects of naval operations, seamanship and leadership. This includes valuable classroom instruction, hands-on training and practical experiences. Cadets also learn about navigation, naval history, military customs and even participate in physical fitness and drill exercises. The two programs within Sea Cadets include the Navy League Cadet Corps for middle school students aged 10 to 13 and the Naval Sea Cadet Corps for ages 13 through the end of high school. 52 | VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

Sea Cadet in that disciplined environment, you’re going to do okay in boot camp, for sure,” Lennon said. “We have a good number of Cadets go to the Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, a few at West Point and at the Merchant Marines Academy.” The organization is a great way to prepare for service in the US armed forces, but there is no requirement to join the military. Sea Cadets can offer a productive head start in the military, though. Those who have gone through the Sea Cadets program and have served in the military agree.

“Being a Sea Cadet afforded me a number of incredible opportunities that helped shape me into the professional and leader I am today." DONTE MACKEY

"My time as a Sea Cadet taught me the value of commitment, standards and selfless service to others,” said United States Marine Corps Major General Jason Q. Bohm. “This foundation prepared me for a 34-year career as a Marine. These same traits are as important for young Cadets as they are for senior leaders in our military."

“Being a Sea Cadet afforded me a number of incredible opportunities that helped shape me into the professional and leader I am today,” said Donte Mackey, a former Sea Cadet and current volunteer with the organization in South Carolina. “Being exposed to these opportunities, during the pivotal years of my youth, better prepared [me] to achieve my desired goals. Sea Cadets reinforced the importance of good character, patriot[ism] and a sense of belonging. It is no doubt that some of the most incredible people I have met was due to the relationships established through Sea Cadets.”

About half of Sea Cadets, from approximately 400 units across America, Guam and Puerto Rico, go on to join the military, according to Lennon. “The Sea Cadets is a very highly disciplined environment [in] which young men and women need to grow and if you have thrived as a

The programming for the students is robust, with approximately 20 to 30 cadets in each unit who meet one weekend a month. In the summertime, groups undergo out-of-town weeklong special training. Each cadet must have a regulation military haircut, undergo physical fitness training and wear uniforms in the program. Cadets get to experience life in the Navy firsthand through activities like visiting naval installations, visiting ships and participating in overnight training exercises. These hands-on experiences give cadets a taste of true military life and inspire a desire to serve. “What we do is challenge these young men and women and when they are in environments where they are challenged, [they will begin] to work together to overcome some obstacles,” Lennon said. “We give [the Cadets] opportunities to step outside their comfort zone[s] in a safe environment where then they can grow in confidence.”

The rigorous training Sea Cadets undergo provides building blocks not just for a career in military service, but for a successful career in any sector.

The organization works with over 2,500 volunteers who donate over 278,000 hours annually. Volunteers must be of strong moral character, of sound mind and be capable of communicating and living out core Sea Cadet values. In addition, volunteers must be US citizens or legal permanent residents, free of felony convictions and willing to undergo a background check.

"The skills I learned as a Sea Cadet: discipline, leadership, knowledge, commitment, integrity and more established a foundation that gave me a leg ahead of my peers who joined the Marines with no similar experience." MAJOR GENERAL JASON Q. BOHM U N I T E D S TAT E S M A R I N E C O R P S

“As a volunteer, I currently serve in two capacities,” said Mackey. “First, I serve as a Training Group Director. Secondly, I am the Operations Officer for the Southeast Area, which is composed of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The reason I continue to volunteer is a result of the major role Sea Cadets played in my life. I want as many cadets to be afforded even greater opportunities.”

“Sea Cadets prepared me to pursue whatever career would be best for me. I am currently in higher education, specifically in enrollment management,” said Mackey. “Additionally, I am an PhD student, which the discipline gained from Sea Cadets has helped me be successful [at], academically. Although I am not in the military, being a Sea Cadet equipped me with many skills that helped me advance my professional career.” For those young Americans who join the armed forces, the Sea Cadets offers a nautical-oriented curriculum that provides a solid background in leadership, teamwork and citizenship. Cadets get the chance to build robots, sail, fly, SCUBA dive, work in the medical field, learn about STEM, try their hand at culinary services, learn about the security field, photography, submarines and receive special forces training. "The skills I learned as a Sea Cadet: discipline, leadership, knowledge, commitment, integrity and more established a foundation that gave me a leg ahead of my peers who joined the Marines with no similar

PROGRAM D E TA I L S

The program is quite affordable, with annual enrollment fees for cadets in the program ranging from $150 to $250 per year, depending on the unit location. Add on uniform fees and summer and winter training, and the program runs families about approximately $650 a year. By being involved in the Sea Cadets, students may be offered various scholarship opportunities and career paths. One benefit of the Sea Cadet program is an exposure to potential careers students may not have considered. Lennon says details of the role of the

The Bertie Bowman Story story by DAW N K L AVO N photography courtesy of U N I T E D S TAT E S S E N AT E F E D E R A L C R E D I T U N I O N

A Capitol Hill Icon: Remembering the longest serving Black staff member in the history of the U.S. Congress Bertie Herbert Bowman’s life reads like a blockbuster Hollywood movie. He grew up poor, one of 13 children, on his sharecropper parents’ South Carolina farm. Bowman and his siblings walked three miles to school daily, didn’t bathe in the winter and were up before dawn daily doing chores. In 1944, at age 13, he heard a speech by S.C. Sen. Burnet Maybank, who told the audience to look him up if they were ever in Washington D.C. So, Bowman ran away and hopped a train with his sights set on the nation’s capital. After arriving at Union Station, he looked up Maybank and asked him for work. Maybank hired him, paying him $2 a week out of his own pocket to sweep the steps of the U.S. Capitol. From those humble beginnings, Bowman epitomized the American dream, working his way up the ladder and eventually serving in a senior role with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He retired at age 90 after more than six decades as a Congressional 61

staffer—the longest serving Black staff member in the history of the U.S. Congress. Bowman died October 25, 2023 in North Bethesda at the age of 92. “To remember the life of Bertie Bowman is to remember his integrity and his steadfast dedication to public service,” said U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a statement issued the day after Bowman’s passing. “Throughout his life, Bertie overcame adversity, broke down barriers, and forged an inspiring future that led him from sweeping the halls of the U.S. Congress to working under 16 Chairs of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. He imprinted himself on the work and lives of every member that had the privilege to serve on our Committee across both sides of the aisle, and did so with honor, decency, and kindness.”

From Humble Beginnings Bowman’s story is fascinating and inspirational, since he worked at the epicenter of American power for over 60 years. Back in his teens, after working for five years sweeping steps, Maybank helped Bowman get a job at a Capitol Hill coffee shop. From there, he held positions shining shoes, and befriending powerful government officials.

In 1965, when he was 34, Bowman was hired by Arkansas Sen. William Fullbright as a clerk, and then coordinator, to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Among his duties with the committee were greeting witnesses for testimony, overseeing and training committee interns and making sure microphones worked. In 1967 he connected with a young intern from Hope, AK, in what would become a lifelong friendship. Bill Clinton, then a Georgetown undergrad, who worked as a messenger for the Committee. “He was a little fella that I guess he needed a little nourishment for someone maybe a little older than he was, but we got along real fine,” Bowman said about former President Clinton in an interview aired on NBC news.

Clinton developed a decades-long relationship with Bowman and even wrote the foreword for Bowman’s autobiography, Step by Step: A Memoir of Hope, Friendship, Perseverance, and Living the American Dream, in 2008.

“Bertie is living proof of why it is both morally right and in our country’s best interest to embrace the talents and gifts of all our people, regardless of race, educational background, or station in life."

the Senator from South Carolina, but he ran and won. And we became good friends.” In the mid-1960s, Bowman had applied to Howard University, but was having trouble getting accepted. Thurmond made a personal phone call to the university. Bowman was in. He attended business classes for several years at Howard, but never graduated, according to the Washington Post.

Working with the Influential As part of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, Bowman rubbed elbows with the likes of Senators like then-Sen. Barack Obama. Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry also worked closely with Bowman as did Vice President Joe Biden— and many other notable leaders on Capitol Hill, according to the United States Senate Federal Credit Union’s (USSFCU) website. Bowman’s work included a role on the Architect Committee, with the Secretary of the Senate, as well as with the Foreign Relations Committee. He retired in 1990, but was convinced to come back to work for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2000 by Sen. Helms. He also owned a limousine service and was an elected member of the U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union and member of the District of Columbia Board of Funeral Directors. So vital was Bowman’s role to the USSFCU, that in 2020, the organization named a branch of their business after him. The Bowman Branch of the USSFCU is located at 1310 Braddock Place in Old Town Alexandria. “He has always been a fighter and an advocate,” said USSFCU Board Member Christopher Shrunk in 2019. “Bowman stands up for what’s right and always advocates for the ones tasked with getting the job done.” Bowman’s service to the USSFCU began in 1966 as a member of the Credit Committee, according to the USSFCU, and continued

- PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON Surprisingly, Bowman also befriended Senator Strom Thurmond and Senator Jesse Helms, both from South Carolina and both segregationists, according to the Washington Post. “Strom Thurmond and I, we had a good relationship,” Bowman told reporter Tom Temin in an interview. “He was of South Carolina. October, the Senate community reflected on the legacy he left behind. “Bertie was the very embodiment of the American Dream and will continue to inspire new generations of public servants to pick up where he left off,” said Cardin.

“You’ve gotta help somebody,” he said at the ceremony to dedicate the USSFCU building named in his honor in September of 2021. “Let ‘em know that you’re here to help them like someone helped you.” That same year, Bowman was honored with the title of Emeritus Board Member for the USSFCU, due to his esteem within the organization. This was the first time in the 85-year history of the Credit Union that they had awarded a board member with the status of Emeritus, according to the USSFCU.

An Acclaimed Author In 2008, Bowman’s memoirs were published, with much acclaim. “This is a marvelous and inspiring story about a man who, despite

a difficult early life, did not lose faith in himself or other people,” wrote Barbara F. Allem, former chief clerk, Committee on Foreign Relations. “He is a person many of us aspire to be like–but often fall short of.” In the book, Bowman wrote about his ascent from poor farm boy to esteemed Congressional staff member. Participating locations included Whiskey & Oyster, Sweet Fire Donna’s, Tequila & Taco, and Lost Boy Cider. Ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and other guests enjoyed spooky-themed cocktails & jello shots at each restaurant, costume contests, free SnapStream photo-booth pictures, party favors, giveaways, and more! The best part: 100% of all registration fees were generously donated to the local non-profit ALIVE, the oldest and largest private safety net in the City of Alexandria dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger. DEXTER INGRAM fighting the good fight VETERAN COUNTERTERRORISM EXPERT SINGS PRAISES OF HIS CAREER IN NATIONAL SECURITY

“I jumped into the world of diplomacy, learning critical languages and the importance of partners—especially in global coalitions,” Ingram says. “Along the way, I worked closely with the FBI and DHS, and even worked overseas at INTERPOL.”

story by DAW N K L AVO N

Ingram’s career led him to far flung locales like Helmand Province in Afghanistan and Lyon, France for assignments.

Whether it was while interning at the White House, working with INTERPOL, convening with Afghan warlords, speaking at the International Spy Museum or mentoring youth, Dexter Ingram has always been out to change the world.

“I feel like I make a difference. I definitely connect with people,” he says. “I connected with the warlords and the provincial leaders [in Afghanistan]. I spoke Pashto. I knew their culture. I knew their families. I was honest with them.”

“It’s about just being a good human,” he says. “All these opportunities came about by me doing what speaks to me.” Currently serving as Director at the Office of Countering Violent Extremism in the US Department of State, this DC insider spent his entire career in national security. After serving as a White House intern, a US Navy flight officer and a member of a think tank focusing on weapons of mass destruction, Ingram knew he was drawn to the field. Following September 11th, 2001, he was asked to join the newly created House Select Committee on Homeland Security, serving as the Terrorism, Science and Technology Lead. In 2006, it led him to the US Department of State, where he continues making a name for himself. 69

Following his passion, Ingram spent years working for the Special Envoy in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, as the Deputy Director and Acting Director. He recently began a new role heading the Office of Countering Violent Extremism.

“I like to lead because I want to make sure people are taken care of."

P R O M OT I N G D I V E R S I T Y While leading the Counterterrorism Bureau’s diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility programming last year, Ingram suggested soliciting career advice from the office’s most senior Black official. He was disappointed when he found out it was him, though he notes now there is a political appointee more senior than him. That realization helped him conclude that he wanted to inspire other minorities to serve. A married father of two boys, Ingram is dedicated to reaching the next generation, extolling the advantages of a career in national security—especially to underserved populations. His non-profit organization, IN Network, reaches out to students aged 13 to 26, navigating future careers in national security.

C O M M U N I T Y S E R V I C E AT H O M E On any given day, Ingram can be found at his (not so) nine-tofive job at the State Department, speaking to elementary school students about the joys of STEM education or spinning yarns to visitors at the International Spy Museum in Washington DC, where he serves on the Advisory Board.

"Dex Ingram's contributions to the International Spy Museum's education mission are exceptional,” says Chris Costa, Executive Director of the International Spy Museum. “He's not only an expert at the US Department of State on a range of national security issues, but he's an authority on spy artifacts and his passion for the world of spying is unmatched.”

Ingram says, though he has never been a spy, his downtime hobby over the past 30 years has been collecting spy memorabilia, which he has amassed into a significant collection.

“Something I started saying years ago to young people is, 'You can have an internship in Geneva; you can have an internship in Prague; you really don’t have to just look around Baltimore. You can look globally. There’s so much out there,' and exposing folks to the possibilities is my number one priority in life.”

Since opening their flagship garden center in Lothian, Maryland in 2000, Greenstreet Gardens has been a trusted source for all things horticultural, from seeds and flowers to gardening implements and tools. Offering more than just product variety, however, theirs is a business model built on customer service, knowledgeable staff and dedication to quality. “Our tagline is ‘Success grows here,’ and that is also essentially a mission statement for our company,” says Ray Greenstreet, who co-owns and operates the company’s two locations—the original, in Lothian and their second, in Alexandria, Virginia, which opened in 2011—with his wife, Stacy. “We’re different to the big box stores because of the way we operate and assess customer needs to ensure that they get the products and tools that best suit those needs and interests.”

Greenstreet Gardens is a proud, family-owned and operated company. Ray and Stacy’s three children have also all played various roles in its success—including helping with annual events like the Fall Festival, which recently welcomed 20,000 visitors to the Lothian location for attractions like the pumpkin patch, corn maze and woodland farm, benefitting various needs in the community. Their much-anticipated open houses, held in both Lothian and Alexandria, are an opportunity for the adults to have dressed-up, festive fun and get the holiday season kicked off, with representatives from local distilleries and restaurants onsite for tastings. Proceeds are given to the local chamber of commerce. In the spring, Greenstreet Gardens greets the season with an Easter Egg Drop. “It’s all about community,” says Ray. Just as community is a driving force in Greenstreet Garden’s business, so it is for Spectra Credit Union. Serving the needs of clients across NOVA, Maryland and DC, they help grow the local economy and build dreams through their small business loans.
