JUNE 2020 VIP TEAM LETTER Welcome to June, Alexandria! If this were any other summer in any other year, we would be nonchalantly writing you a letter about how school has just ended, the pools are open and to 'hang in there!' because your vacation is right around the bend. The truth is: School ended months ago and virtual homeschooling has exhausted our children, teachers and ourselves. The pools are, in fact, open, but wearing a face mask in this heat? Yeah, right. Vacations? Is traveling even still a thing? The REAL truth is: America recently woke up to new realities. The COVID-19 pandemic and a new, powerful movement that is fighting against racial inequalities has opened all of our eyes to a brand new world. But recognizing the problem isn't enough... and remaining silent never creates change. The title of this issue was originally Home & Garden. The plan was to bring you extraordinary home tours, tips on gardening in small spaces, local real esate profiles, organization tips & more. You will definitely find these stories as you explore the pages ahead, but the current climate here in Alexandria forced us to ask ourselves: What kind of voice do we want our publication to have? The answer inspired us to go on to curate so much more. If you are struggling to juggle working from home and parenthood, our Parenting & Virtual Work piece on page 10 is for you. Perhaps 'masking up' makes you panic. Our first 'Surviving the New Normal' mental health series on page 22 may help. You can also join us in practicing compassion as we recognize PTSD Awareness Month on page 44. Or maybe your soul is just in need of a great love story. Read about Courtney & Rob's COVID-19 wedding at The Carlyle House. Turn to page 48 to find powerful, emotional images from our coverage of the Vigil for George Floyd. And if you flip to our centerfold on page 26, you'll meet Nardia Boodoo - a professional ballerina of The Washington Ballet who has spent her career overcoming adversity by flourishing in a predominantly white industry. This is how VIP Alexandria Magazine plans to move forward; by using our online platforms and printed pages to continue telling the stories that matter; the stories you would otherwise never have the opportunity to hear. We believe that everyone deserves to have a voice... and we pride ourselves on offering a safe space to use it. Just as we came together to support one another during a worldwide pandemic, we will all rise together on the other side of inequality. Be kind to one another, Alexandria. Stay beautiful. Though many services were closed to the public due to the Covid-19 this Memorial Day, that did not stop the community from "masking up" and celebrating with family, friends & neighbors in Old Town. The King Street Trolley made its rounds. Parks were open for picnics, dog walking and other recreation. Local restaurants like Chadwick's, Hummingbird and Union Street Public House offered Memorial Day dining specials to-go. Even local boutiques such as The Dog Park, 3 Sisters and The Lucky Knot joined in on the fun by offering Memorial Day sales. Thanks to the creative offerings of these businesses and many others, Memorial day was a huge success here in Alexandria!

PARENTING +
VIRTUAL WORK Story by Kellie Gunderman
during the day. Nap time can free up time to get some serious work done. Feeling fatiqued from too much screen time? This can also be a great opportunitiy to rest your eyes and releax.
Have a working plan. If you're not taking your remote work seriously or lack a strategy you may find that meeting your deadlines can be a challenging task with the kids around. Make a schedule, set daily goals and draft a plan on how to accomplish them. This simple schedule will help you to feel less guilty when it's time to work rather than play.
Set clear boundaries.
hile working from home has become Covid19's safest solution to keeping our families safe while still earning a living, we are all learning that it calls for a very tricky balance when it comes to parenting. These tips will help you reduce the pressure that you are experiencing while trying to juggle work and kids at home.
Wake up early or sleep late. Have you considered sacrificing and maximizing your morning and late-night time to do most of your work? Focusing on your main tasks during this time, when the kids are asleep, can really increase your productivity.
Establish your workspace.
Let older, independent children know that they should not disturb you when you work. Teach themt to prepare lunches for themselves and younger siblings, as well as what situations constitute an emergency situation. This will help them reduce their dependence on you.
Give your kids a little quality time. If you give your kids an interactive portion of your daytime, they will typially let you do your work peacefully. Try taking a short walk around the neighborhood, playing with your kids, before feeding them lunch or a snack.. This will also help you relax your mind before you get back to work.
Look for assistance. Don't be afraid to ask for help or lean on a partne to help with the kids. This will help reduce your workload, improving the quality of your virtual work.
Kids are curious and want to explore your workspace, but selecting a room or dedicated desk that is just for you will help to minimize interruptions. Just be sure to avoid common area spaces like livingrooms or kitchens.
With the above tips, getting the most out of working from home is possible while still maintaining a great relationship with your kids.
Make good use of day naps.
Be sure to check out our Parenting + Virtual Work Survivial Kit on page 10!
Kids, especially toddlers, are likely to take naps

A Q+A WITH ANN PHAM ON VIRTUAL HOME WORKOUTS Photography by Magdalena Papaioannou
12 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
Q: What was the vision behindGet Fit Studio? A: The evolution to the Get Fit we know today came very naturally. In the beginning, we started off leasing space around Alexandria and Arlington to accommodate personal training clients. As our following grew, we decided to develop free group training several times a week as a way for all clients to meet and bond. Eventually, those gatherings were opened up to the public and the demand grew from there. The mission of Get Fit has always been to create a sense of support and togetherness through fitness. Q: When the COVID-19 pandemic began how did you switch gears at Get Fit? A: At the start of the spread, we immediately cut our already small group sizes down further to allow for more distance between members during workouts. But we quickly realized that this wouldn't work to stop the spread. Over the next week, we started offering all of our services online and temporarily paused in-studio classes. Many clients immediately jumped at the idea and embraced virtual training as a way to deal with stress and to maintain some sense of normalcy and connection.
lack of access to heavy strength equipment. However, that doesn't mean that virtual training isn't optimal or effective. More repetition, stress and intensity is also great for building strength when you can't lift heavy from the comfort of your apartment. Q: What's been your favorite thing about spending more time at home? A: Being a husband and wife team, quite often our family time outside of the business has taken a back seat. Being forced to close the studio has given us a brief pause and allowed us to spend more one on one time with our daughter. This is especially important since baby number 2 is on the way!
Q: What can one expect from a Virtual Training session? A: We work just as hard to ensure our clients get the same quality training they've become accustomed to in-studio. All class programs are still written on a daily basis by our trainers and personal training is still custom designed specifically for the client. We give even more modifications depending on the clients' abilities, environment and access to equipment. Q: Will you continue offering Virtual Training when the studio is able to reopen? A: Virtual Personal Training was something we have always offered as an option but prior to this madness, the majority of our clients always enjoyed coming in and seeing us and the rest of their fitfam. Virtual Group Sessions are here to stay now too! Q: What is the difference between Virtual Training and in-studio sessions? A: The one advantage to Virtual Training is the convenience of not having to leave your house. But for some that might be a con because people often need the change of scenery; clients have been mitigating this by taking their laptops and sessions outdoors. Depending on your fitness goal, a con could be the JUNE 2020 • 13

fter meeting at a college party and bonding over an obscure band that they were each convinced only they knew of, it didn’t take long for Robert Shane and Courtney Durham to become fast friends. Each harboring a secret desire for more, their friendship lasted throughout their college careers. It wasn’t until after graduation in 2012 that their desire to be more than friends won out. The couple kept their strong relationship going, despite the trials of distance that came with Courtney’s pursuit of a graduate degree. After six years of dating, Rob and Courtney knew that the time had come to create a life together. “We'd been discussing marriage for a while and had a trip to the Austrian Alps coming up, so I had a hunch that he might do it there. One night, a few weeks before our trip, Rob called for our nightly chat. Unbeknownst to me, he was actually on the phone while driving from his house in Pennsylvania to where I was in New Haven, Connecticut, in the middle of a snowstorm. Turns out, he'd gotten the engagement ring finished a few hours earlier and just couldn't wait. He finally arrived around one a.m. and woke me up. When I came downstairs to let him in, he got down on his knee on my front porch. I’ll never forget how special that moment was, surrounded by the serenity of the snow that blanketed the trees and the stillness of that midnight scene,” Courtney says. Two years later on May 24, 2020, Courtney & Rob walked down the aisle at Carlyle House Historic Park. Courtney was wearing a

beautiful dress from BHLDN with a plunging neckline and lace detailing on the back, donning a vibrant bouquet made from neighborhood blooms and arranged by local florist, Jennifer, at Atelier Floral Designs. True, the original plan had been a big wedding near Charlottesville in the Shenandoah foothills, but COVID-19 necessitated that their plans be changed. While they could have easily postponed their wedding until circumstances allowed their vision for the day to be fully realized, they shifted and made their special day happen anyway—just in a slightly different way. “Carlyle House has some really stunning gardens and a very intimate setting in the back. When I called the manager, Andrea, to inquire if we could hold a quick elopement ceremony out back on their original wedding date, she not only said yes, but also went out of her way to get the gardens in tiptop shape and oversee the public access areas to make sure we didn't go over ten people.” Their venue determined, the couple still had a few details to iron out, not the least of which was finding an officiant. “We had put out a call to neighbors seeing who might be able to officiate without needing to access the County Clerk's office in person. Several neighbors suggested Mayor Justin Wilson, and we figured it would be another cool twist to our story for our kids someday. He was immediately and positively responsive when we asked.”
Zoom marriage license in hand—“We raised our right hands to the laptop camera!”—Courtney and Rob exchanged vows and were pronounced husband and wife. Joining their guests for a small reception, everyone dined on a picnic of boxed lunches before cutting into a two-tiered vanilla cake with raspberrylemon curd filling and buttercream frosting made by Courtney. Happy that not even a pandemic could stand in the way of their love, the newly married couple was off to start their life together, looking forward to a future honeymoon in Slovenia. "It was a joy to work with Courtney and Rob; to support their small ceremony during these challenging times. I don’t feel like I did much. However, I do understand how little things like sweeping and being on site to ensure their privacy for half an hour make a huge difference. And a ceremony always makes people smile walking by. PATRICK'S PAINTING
Patrick Coye Story by Kellie Gunderman
In 2007, while working toward a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Patrick Coye was not quite sure what he wanted to do with his life. All he knew was that construction had always been a part of it. One giant leap of faith, one business license and one insurance policy later, Patrick’s Painting was born and Patrick had become an entrepreneur at just twenty years old. The business began to grow slowly, year by year, and while you can still catch a glimpse of Patrick with a brush in his hand, he now spends most of his time behind the scenes, assessing client’s needs and managing projects. “I love being able to provide a valuable service to our clients that enhances their life.” Armed with a fantastic office manager named Genesis and state of the art project management software, Patrick has been able to build a great team that uses pre-job and post-job checklists to ensure that each and every project begins strong and is completed with all expectations being met. “My team follows COP’s (Craftsman Operation Procedures). Our COP’s ensure the work being done is done correctly and in the most efficient manner.” Patrick dreams of Patrick's Painting becoming Alexandria’s go-to painting contractor, known for their friendliness, clear communication and respect for clients’ belongings/furniture/ plants. He trains his team to not only be easy to work with, but also committed to quality work.
try to make the networking breakfasts and happy hours when I’m free. They are always a great place to meet other reputable professionals.” In addition to The Chamber ALX, Patrick is an active member of the Alexandria Rotary Club, where he assists in the organization and setup of the annual Flags for Heroes Fundraiser. (This year, the fundraiser will be held at Cedar Knoll Restaurant over the weekend of June 27th.) Additionally, Patrick volunteers for Rebuild Alexandria and the Boys and Girls Club in the Murray Gate Community in Alexandria. When Patrick is not working, networking or volunteering, you can find him doing something outside with his family or helping others train for the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament which they were in the middle of when Covid hit. He credits his discipline and work ethic to the sport of boxing — both traits that have made him the ideal employer and contractor.
Aside from working one-on-one with clients and members of his team, Patrick’s favorite aspect of life as a small business owner is being able to make connections with members of the community. He loves living in a diverse area, in which most people are transplanted, and learning everyone’s stories. With a mindset like this, it’s no wonder that Patrick was nominated for The Chamber ALX’s 40 Under 40 Award.
I joined the chamber because I felt it was another great way to meet other successful business owners within the community. I try to make the networking breakfasts and happy hours when I’m free. They are always a great place to meet other reputable professionals.

MENTAL HEALTH
in the new normal
SERIES ONE: MASKS + ANXIETY
Story by Alycia Burant, LPC, Healthy Minds Therapy
How to Cope?
Personal protective masks have become an everyday accessory for us all. They are an important part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic because they protect us from air-borne droplets containing the virus and protect others from our own droplets. Face masks and social distancing are likely to be an important part of our defense for months to come. They are required by many states, including Virginia, when we are in public places.
If staying home for a bit longer is not an options for you, either due to social necessity or work requirements, these are a few tips that may help you cope while wearing a face mask. • Orient yourself to positive sensations in your body – what feels good? Relax your jaw, soften your eyes, drop your shoulders. Shift the focus away from the mask. • Try inhaling essential oils that have proven to reduce one's level of anxiety. Try Frankincense, Orange or Lavender. • Reach out to a professional therapist for a more personalized approach to managing your anxiety.
But what about those who can't wear masks? People suffering from PTSD or anxiety disorders may find themselves having trouble breathing or feeling claustrophobic when wearing a mask.
Why Do Face Masks Bother Us? When wearing a mask, we almost immediately begin to feel an increase in heat on our face. As we continue to breathe our exhaust air become restricted and we begin to feel our body temperature rise as a result. Some of us may even begin to sweat. This sensation and the increased heat causes us to breathe faster and our heart to beat faster. For some of us, these physical changes quickly translate to psychological effects. We become more claustrophobic, and have feelings of vulnerability and fear. These effects can remind us of the coronavirus pandemic we are trying to avoid and the fine line between good health and death. All of this adds to the feelings connected to wearing that mask. If you are someone who is feeling this way and having trouble 'masking up,' the good news is: You're not alone and there are ways to cope.
22 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
We are being asked to make moral and ethical decisions every day now more than ever. If going out and wearing a mask is going to exacerbate your symptoms and make you feel worse, consider waiting a bit longer until you feel comfortable. Just because things are opening up doesn’t mean you have to jump in. Listen to your body and be gentle with yourself. - Alycia Burant, LPC, Healthy Minds Therapy
Professionals such as Alycia Burant, LPC recommend sensorimotor psychotherapy. This incorporates body work into therapy. This type of approach is helpful when there is a major emphasis on the physical things that are happening to your body (e.g. panic while wearing a mask) and it is impacting you cognitively. Story Submitted by Century 21 Real Estate, LLC Photography Courtesy of Greg Hudgins
Century 21 Redwood Realty Agent Wins "Relentless Agent Award" For Consistently Delivering Extraordinary Experiences Century 21 Real Estate LLC proudly announced the winners of its quarterly "Relentless Agent Awards," recognizing excellence in the ever-evolving real estate industry. Greg W. Hudgins of CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty has been selected as one of five winners to represent the most relentless agents in the CENTURY 21ÂŽ System in Q1 of 2019. The select group was chosen from over 52,000 U.S. Agents, specifically identified by
client testimonials written about their efforts to go beyond the standard call of duty. The CENTURY 21 Relentless Agent Awards were established in 2018 to recognize those professionals who have exemplified the brand's mission to defy mediocrity and deliver extraordinary experiences. Century 21 Real Estate recognizes that a truly relentless agent is more than just sales results, instead looking to third-party customer ratings and testimonials that demonstrate agents' willingness to go above and beyond for their clients. "The 'Relentless Agent Award' brings to life our identity as a brand, the innovative services we develop for our system members and the extraordinary experiences they deliver to homebuyers and sellers," said Mike Miedler, president and chief executive officer, Century 21 Real Estate LLC. "Greg has received exceedingly high praise from his clients for his sage advice and valuable background in design. He demonstrates a robust eagerness to do everything possible to fulfill the needs of each and every client."
"I'm honored to be described as 'relentless' by the CENTURY 21 community. My clients' needs always come first, and I strive to offer the absolute highest quality service possible. I credit Century 21 Real Estate for providing its affiliated agents with the best tools available. Without the brand's support and consistent encouragement, it would be impossible to offer the quality of service we do." - Greg Hudgins 24 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

I would most strongly recommend Greg to any potential buyer or seller - he turned a stressful process into a manageable and relatively painless experience. Greg made everything easy for me - despite my job’s demands and the onset of COVID-19.

and design specialist, a talent that has made him an invaluable resource for his clients who truly appreciate having his unique eye for design. One client who was looking to sell her home of 37 years and move into a 55+ community, shared how Greg invested almost a year of his time assisting with everything from construction to redesign to even hauling truckloads of goods out of the home in preparation to sell, making "an arduous undertaking a fun process".
"Greg went above and beyond in so many ways to ensure we had everything we needed to both sell our house and buy a new one - both in a very short timeframe. He was fast and efficient when handling all aspects of the process. He even connected us with great contractors for both houses needs and supported our efforts every step of the way. We are so thrilled with the smooth, quick process that allowed us to move into our dream home." - Josh & Kelly, Arlington

THE WASHINGTON BALLET JETÉ SOCIETY PRESENTS: DANCING THROUGH DIVERSITY

t may not be a conscious thing, but when most people picture a ballerina, they envision a certain type. They see in their mind’s eye a certain build, a certain attitude…even a certain race. Unfortunately, even in times as progressive as these, race is still very much a factor in ballet. Seeing a face of color in the most renowned ballet companies is a rare thing, and those who have achieved success enough to join their number have fought hard to get there. For these individuals, there is much to be proud of. They are examples to us all— but especially to those in their communities, to those younger than themselves who are watching—that nothing is impossible to anyone with a dream.

I’m proud to be a dancer of color, but it hasn’t been easy. For Nardia Boodoo, ballet was a dream that came to her at a young age when she began taking weekly dance classes in elementary school. She may have been rough around the edges at the age of 14 when she auditioned for ballet at the Baltimore School for the Arts, her potential for greatness was recognized and the tiny dancer was on her way. From there, she went on to train at The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, dancing in the corps as a Dryad. “As I bourréed (a type of French folk dance characteristically danced with quick, skipping steps) off stage during the last show, I felt so happy. In that moment, I was inspired, and it sparked my insatiable need to be onstage,” Boodoo recalls with a smile. That insatiable need drove her on, despite the fact that she didn’t look like everyone else on stage. The daughter of an Indian from Trinidad and Tobago and an African American, Boodoo grew up as a minority within a minority community, being one of the few people of color in a Hasidic Jewish community in Baltimore. Even so, she grew up feeling included and welcomed, living in a peaceful place and going to a school that was diverse in race and culture. For Boodoo, her race was never a reason to squelch her dreams. Instead, it gave her even more purpose, strengthening her resolve to be successful and make a difference in each of the companies she worked with. As a member of The Washington Ballet since 2017, she’s hoping that she can influence a change that will have lasting impact. “I’m proud to be a dancer of color, but it hasn’t been easy. I've always had to prove that I could do it and that I could get my technique together and be a professional. Once I got into a company, I found myself having to prove that I needed to be cast. It’s a lot to tackle, and it gets tiresome. I have met many talented dancers and made friends from various companies all over the world. While I am always thrilled to see them succeed, it's also a bit disheartening to watch them ascend through the ranks so much easier than I have. Their image is the standard yet I always seem to be held to a higher standard. Perhaps it's because ballet was never created for a girl that looks like me, but I have never let that slow me down. I know what I am capable of and when I don't fit the mold, I make the mold conform to me because I love to dance. I could never imagine myself doing anything else." JUNE 2020 • 29

"I know what I am capable of and when I don't fit the mold, I make the mold conform to me because I love to dance. I could never imagine myself doing anything else."
Nevertheless, Boodoo has great hope that every step to change will eventually open the doors to more diversity. “Brown women have innate rhythm and movement quality, and we represent the demographics of the city. Our presence alone breaks down the stereotype that brown girls can't do ballet. We can do it, and we do it very well. Dancing in a corps de ballet doesn't mean that we have to look alike in every dimension; it means that we have the ability to move in the same way and work together,” she says. “TWB has verbally praised me and promotes my messages about supporting racial diversity on social media. This is all very new for them and it's a step in the right direction. They have set the stage and the ballet community is looking at us as the model. I hope I can continue to help TWB to become leaders in implementing a reimaged ballet community.”

GARDENING in small spaces Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography by Magdalena Papaiouannou
When most people think of gardening, they assume that they need a traditional yard to create anything that qualifies. Fortunately for those of us with green thumbs who may lack yard space, there are simple solutions that will allow us to get our grow on. Think balcony boxes and raised garden beds that fit neatly in the limited space you have on your patio or deck. Think assortments of pots that bring color and texture and visual interest, all of them bearing a different plant or flower. Regardless of the square footage that is available to you, the options of greenery and plant life that you can work with are endless. Using pots is a great way to incorporate variety that’s low maintenance. Terra cotta pots are especially ideal for their
natural warmth and they add a great pop of color to your space. To keep things interesting, choose pots of different sizes and shapes. Mix in a few monochromatic pots of different textures for added appeal. If your outdoor space has a railing or an outdoor wall, mount flower boxes or hang individual pots to optimize your “garden.” The presence of bright blooms or vibrant greenery will bring instant color to your home. Additionally, all that plant life can make a small space feel larger. If space allows, think about investing in a garden box that will accommodate an edible garden and then research which plants will flourish in the local conditions. If you want your plants and flowers to be the focal point of your space, stick to neutral pots and accessories. The rainbow of colors you get from your garden will be enough to make a statement without the distraction of a competing palette. When selecting flowers, plants, and herbs for your miniature garden, consider ways to maximize visual appeal. Think about color, texture, and height. Thrillers, fillers, and spillers are the foundation of good garden design, so be sure to implement that into your space. Thrillers are the big, bold plants that provide an eye-catching vertical element and serve as a focal point. Fillers are more mid-size, rounded plants that frame and accent the thriller and help fill the planter. Spillers are showy plants that spill over the sides of the container. No outdoor space is complete without a seating area. Stage with appropriately sized, weather-proof wicker furniture that’s comfortable. Be careful not to overcrowd. Accent chairs with distressed wood tables are also a great option. Living in an apartment or condo may come with a sacrifice of outdoor space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful container garden. Use your imagination and let your green thumb come out to play.

Your CBD Store® Alexandria @ Home Summer has finally arrived and with a new season comes fresh and fun ways to introduce CBD products into our daily routines. Whether you are familiar with CBD or learning about it for the first time, it is important to understand the science behind what you are putting into your body. This will allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy the health benefits that CBD has to offer. CBD is a natural occurring cannabinoid found in industrial hemp. Our bodies are already familiar with CBD because we naturally produce cannabinoids. The problem is that most of us suffer from a cannabinoid deficiency. Introducing a highquality CBD product to our systems over time encourages our bodies to regulate cannabinoid production on its own. As this happens, we experience homeostasis or a balance with our endocannabinoid system.
Story by Shells Karle, Owner Your CBD Store® Alexandria
Mint soothes the stomach and reduces inflammation. Pour over ice, add 0.25ml or 0.5ml of SunMed Water Soluble (in a strength of your choice) and enjoy! You can also break open a SunMed CBD Honey Stick. This is a healthy way to add a natural sweetener to your beverage. Another great CBD product is SunMed NEURO which is CBG rich. Cannabigerol (CBG) is a lesser-known cannabinoid that may be the key to unlocking anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective superpowers in cannabis medicine. For samples, be sure to stop by Your CBD Store Alexandria and stay tuned to VIP Alexandria Magazine for more recipes in our Your CBD Alexandria… At Home summer series!
Taking care of our endocannabinoid system is so important because it regulates a number of vital functions in some of the most important areas of our bodes; our brains, our stomachs and even our skin. This is why CBD is used by so many people for many different reasons. One way to regulate the endocannabinoid system is to ingest something we all need during these hot summer months… water! Staying hydrated is so important and a great way to add more water to our systems is microdosing. CBD microdosing is a low-dose technique for taking CBD that is intended to help you reap the most health and wellness benefits possible. Rather than taking one large dose of CBD each day, microdosing allows you to break the dosage down into several small doses that you consume throughout the day. Try adding SunMed CBD Water Soluble to any beverage. A favorite infused water recipe of mine is watermelon, cucumber and mint. Watermelon is high in lycopene and a great antioxidant. Cucumber helps cool the inflammatory response in the body, hydrates, reduces bloating and flushes out toxins.

w/ Lavender Organizes
We’ve all experienced shifts in our schedules and routines over the last several months. Some of us used the time to get organized but most of us treated our quarantine at home like a well-deserved (and very long) vacation. Our living spaces became cluttered. We ignored the piles of who knows what began to grow and expand. Our stir-crazy children treated the house like they were in the wild west. We surrounded ourselves in chaos because, who cares about organization when there is so much Netflix to catch up on? Well, friends... we hate to be the bearers of bad news but it's time to stop ignoring the clutter and organize our lives. Here are a few great tips from Lavender Organizes to get your started!
Stop procrastinating! Waking up every morning and making your bed is a habit some of us are great at and others don’t see the point, but it does start your day off with at least one task complete which can set the tone for the rest of your day. Likewise, putting your laundry away as soon as it comes out of the dryer, makes sure you complete the task instead of letting your clean clothes pile up on a chair or in the hamper where your dirty laundry needs to go.
Everything has its place. Making a home for everything in your home is vital to staying organized. Simple things like having a cup for all of your pens, a key hook or a mail bin can keep your life and your home much more organized. Collecting mail in a bin when you bring it
40 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
inside, then selecting a couple times a week to sort through it can also help you keep on task of dealing with mail as well as bills instead of randomly piling them on counters and tables where they can get lost.
Choose your themes. Each room in the house should have a theme and should tell a story. Having a simple theme and color scheme in each room keeps the mind from jumping around and feeling overwhelmed. Also, use calming colors like grays, blues, greens and lilac as foundation colors in each room while bolder colors should be used as accents based on the theme of the room. Fresh flowers are also a great way to make a space feel cleaner and more organized.
Buy one, give one. Donate and consign. Often it is difficult to let things go because we know they are still useful even if we haven’t used them in months or even years. One way to deal with these thought patterns is to find a new home for the items; donations to charities and shelters are a fantastic way to feel better about discarding the item while doing some good for the world. If the item isn’t something you’re ready to give away for free, check out a local consignment shop and make a little extra money while decluttering your home. Also, always make a habit of when you buy something new, especially clothing, you clear out one of a similar item that you haven’t worn in a while to keep from collecting clutter in the first place.

SALUTE TO SERVICE presented by
Foundation of Freedom PTSD Awareness Month & The PenFed Foundation Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography Courtesy of The PenFed Foundation
T
hese United States have been built on a foundation of freedom supported by a strong military presence and men and women who dedicate themselves each day to preserving our cherished way of life. As much as they give of themselves, it is still often a struggle to build a financially sound future for themselves and their families. Fortunately, organizations like PenFed Foundation are there to offer their support. “The mission of the Foundation is to empower military service members, veterans, and their communities with the skills and resources to realize financial stability and opportunity,” says General (Ret.) John W. Nicholson, who has held the position of President of PenFed Foundation since April of 2019. “We want to support this community to help prevent financial crises, help military and veterans have a home, and help veterans who want to build a business.”
44 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
Knowing the various ways in which active duty military personnel and veterans need assistance, PenFed Foundation has three core programs available. Launched in 2018, the Veteran Entrepreneur Investment Program (VEIP) helps veterans build their own businesses using a three-pronged approach that includes education, preparation, and investment. The Military Heroes Fund helps veterans prevent a crisis, providing emergency financial assistance and caregiver support. “We also launch emergency relief programs, such as a COVID-19 relief program in March 2020, which helped more than 560 veterans and service members experiencing a financial difficulty during the pandemic so far,” says Nicholson. The third core program offers closing cost and down payment assistance for the purchase of a first home. “We know that home ownership is a key marker of financial stability, so we help this become a reality for hundreds of families each year,” Nicholson notes.
“Our emergency financial assistance and caregiver support programs can help veterans who find themselves in financial need resulting, in part, from their PTSD. By helping caregivers with childcare assistance, they’re able to turn their attention away from worrying about financial stress and focus instead on making sure their veteran is able to get to VA appointments and receive the treatment they need. Additionally, our caregiver support program provides costs to cover additional training for caregivers who need a flexible work schedule or need to change careers to support their family. This helps ensure that veterans get the support from caregivers that they deserve.”
For the countless men and women of the military and their families, rising to the call of duty often brings costs that aren’t readily seen. PTSD is a very real struggle that needs addressing, and PenFed Foundation offers their support to those suffering its effects and works to bring awareness—especially during June, PTSD Awareness Month.
Created by the PenFed Credit Union leadership with a great deal of support from its membership in the DCUC, PenFed Foundation was established in 2001 and has since provided more than $38.5 million in financial support to veterans, active duty service members, families, and caregivers. The DCUC has supported various PenFed Foundation fundraising events and initiatives, most recently having donated to support PREVENTS, a VA-led

Our Foundation is proud to help this community, in particular, through those financial challenges." - General (Ret.) John W. Nicholson
partnership that focuses on a holistic public health approach to suicide prevention. “We especially appreciate the advocacy and leadership of Tony Hernandez at DCUC. It has been tremendous working with him,” says Nicholson. In all the ways that our military serves this great nation, they deserve our support in achieving their financial goals. For PenFed Foundation, offering that support is a daily mission; and they’ve got boots on the ground. For more information on PenFed Foundation, visit www.penfedfoundation.org. JUNE 2020 • 45

WAYS TO SPICE UP YOUR FIRST VIRTUAL DATE STORY BY JEANETTE WAGES
How many times have we heard our parents or grandparents say, “Dating in my day was different.” Well, grandma and grandpa could not be more right with today’s dating scene, because quite honestly dating 6 months ago was a whole different world. As little as five years ago, couples still made up stories about how they met after meeting on a dating app, now it has become common place and meeting at a bar or a grocery store seems like a rare story to hear from our friends. Swiping through apps is the new normal; swipe, chat, meet for coffee or a drink. In the last few months, with the encouragement to social distance, the meet up part has changed to “let’s do a zoom call”. The first time I personally got that message I wasn’t sure how to take it, I knew it was the only way to get some face time but the concept was still foreign and honestly not appealing. My first zoom call date went like this, he set up the link, there were problems with the link, we finally get on to chat, he’s on his patio I’m in my bedroom (insert joke about not being the type of girl who takes a guy into her bedroom for a first date), we have our beverages of choice, chat, ok over it, wish each other a good evening, go back to Netflix and swiping. Zoom call and Facetime dates are not going away anytime soon, people are loving being able to get that glimpse of a person before committing to leaving their house for them, so how do we spice these “first dates” up to actually feel like a date?

On a standard first date, you would pick a central location to meet up for drinks and possibly dinner. Virtual dating doesn’t have to be different! Make an agreement to order curbside pick-up or delivery from the same locally owned restaurant, and make sure to throw in some cocktails!
If you’re more the type of person to go play mini golf on a first date than sit down at a bar, you can get creative with virtual first dates as well. Pick a game you both have in your home or can create with common household items, or even pick a game you can screen share and play together online. What better way to get to know each other in a fun, playful way?
Outdoorsy but not ready to get outdoors together? Hop on a video call while you are both out walking in your favorite parks. Share what you see and what you love about being outdoors while still maintaining a comfortable distance. If one of you wants to leave the house but the other isn’t ready, take them on a video tour of your favorite part of town! Showing the sites and places you love is a great way to get to know someone and they don’t have to leave the comfort of their couch, bonus if they take notes and take you on your first in person date to a place you mention.
the bottom line... Just because we aren’t side by side doesn’t mean dating has to be boring and stagnant. Get creative and let your personality shine through even when it’s through a screen! JUNE 2020 • 47

Are you wanting to be involved in the kitchen for a Chef’s table interactive experience or would you prefer to spend the whole evening with your guest with the food magically appearing from the kitchen? “Some people love being a part of cooking, it feels cool to be in there with a chef.” Creating a menu for a private dining experience is an intense passion for Chef Melvin, as he makes each meal catered to the taste of the guest while still bringing in an upscale, sophisticated appeal to the experience. With a background in Italian, French, traditional American, Central American and as a Master Sushi Chef there is literally something for everyone when bringing in his services. “Sometimes people just want Mac & Cheese, and I’m completely fine with that. The whole idea behind this is to make your event or whatever that may be unforgettable memories and not really about me” Urrutia says as describing how menus come together.
