Get to know some of the faces of the DC Divas and just what they bring to the team, and maybe find some new players to root for as the games get going. Not only are they a credit to the sport of football, they’re also an inspiration for every girl and woman who has dreams that may seem out of reach. September also brings the 21-year anniversary of 9/11. Many of us in Alexandria have ties to the military community or personal connections to the events of 9/11, so our lives have been touched in some way by that one day that shook us to our foundation as a nation. It remains important to honor those who lost their lives that day and those who chose to serve in the aftermath, some making the ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget.

The pandemic highlighted the dysfunction of the home, bringing its size and various features into high relief. During this time, their relatives
“Wepantry.made a ten-foot addition to the back of the house by removing a load-bearing wall and installing a structural steel beam as well as removing a load-bearing partition wall between the kitchen and adjacent family room,” says Sonny Nazemian, Master Designer of Kitchen/Bath at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes. “This created a seamless connection between the new kitchen and the rest of the house.”
A great deal can change within a family in the space of ten years. Family members grow—and grow up—and the needs of the individuals change with it, making the home that was once perfect—well, not so perfect anymore. Such was the case with one family living in the suburbs of Fairfax. With two doctors in the family, life is naturally hectic. Add to that the demanding schedules of their kids’ school and extracurricular activities, and the way their home functioned for them wasn’t quite meeting their needs.

Where once a disused screened-in porch was attached to the old kitchen, the space was reconstructed to create a new butler’s pantry, mudroom space and laundry room. “We installed a number of tall casement windows, a French door and picture windows all around the spaces to maximize the daylight inside this first level,” Nazemian observes.
To accommodate the expanded needs of the family, the kitchen was relocated into the new addition and kitted with top-end, professional grade appliances. A massive center island is crowned with waterfall quartzite and equipped with a dishwasher, prep sink, warming drawer and microwave. “The color ways of the space are made cohesive with contrasting blue glass backsplash tile that ties into the color of the

With so many changes to the home, the flooring was naturally updated, as well. Running throughout the entire home is distressed solid wood plank flooring, giving all spaces cohesion. The two windows flanking each side of the family room fireplace were converted to French doors leading to a newly created screened-in porch with a vaulted ceiling. The old gas fireplace was upgraded and covered with 2’x4’ marble stone running from floor to ceiling to modernize it from its old brick façade. In the office, old bookcases were redone and painted, while the powder room was enlarged and fitted with luxurious new fixtures.
quartzite countertop and beautifully accentuates the blue cabinetry,” Nazemian says.
Giving the outside of the home a new look, an all-glass front door and sidelight were installed with a flagstone walkway and upgraded landscaping to heighten curb appeal. In the backyard, an outdoor living space was created after excavating and removing large trees that were in the path of the newly designed space. The new outdoor living area features a flagstone patio along with an L-shaped stone bench and firepit, an outdoor kitchenette with a large grill and beverage center covered with a gorgeous granite top. “You can hear the singalongs and giggling from miles away when this family gathers around the firepit,” Nazemian says. “They never imagined that their older home could turn into this beautiful castle and they love spending every minute together enjoying the new

HOW TO FEED THE WHOLE FAMILY RIGHT
STORY BY DR. SHOHREH SHARIF

Dental health is something that often gets overlooked when it comes to overall health. But when it comes to teeth, limiting the amount of processed sugar will decrease plaque buildup and keep enamel strong. Focus on consuming leafy greens and other food high in fiber and calcium. Food that is healthy for your body is usually healthy for your teeth too. If possible, brush after enjoying a snack to help lessen the negative effect on teeth.
Asmood.intimidating as it may seem, healthy eating shouldn’t be overly complicated. Unfortunately, with so many "experts" weighing in on things, we can sometimes hear contradictory nutritional and dieting advice. One expert swears that a certain food is good, while the next says the exact opposite. So who should we listen

The reason for that is because food is not just a source of nutrition – it's an integral part of our culture and society. Holidays are not complete without enjoying some of grandma’s famous treats or your favorite aunt's baked mac-n-cheese. Neither of those are anywhere close to resembling whole foods in their natural state. The key is to keep indulgences to special occasions and enjoyed in moderation.

Having healthy options at your fingertips is also key in maintaining a healthy diet. Visiting local markets or your favorite grocery store and picking fresh, seasonal ingredients is a great starting point. Planning breakfast, lunch and dinner also sets you up for success and prevents having to get takeout during the workday or compromise with fast food for lunch or dinner. To the right are some healthy options I make for my family.
• Greek yogurt with a drizzle of honey • Assorted nuts or trail mix • Berries • Frozen yogurt popsicles • Vegetables and dressing (vinaigrette)
Special occasions aside, in our day-to-day lives, it is important to maintain a healthy diet. This means adopting a diet that includes all nutrients in proper amounts and eating in a way that is based on variety, balance and moderation. Fruits and vegetables should be part of your diet, in addition to healthy fats and proteins. One way to ensure that you're eating in a healthful way is cooking at home, which allows for control over the oils used to sauté food and the amount of added sugar in dressings.

Play is an important part of childhood. It encourages socialization, creativity, physical activity and cognitive development. Think back to your own childhood and your time with your friends. Playing on the playground probably left you with a great deal of memories. But for a child with special needs or different abilities, a traditional playground can be more of a challenge than a place for endless play.

It was to create limitless possibility, to offer that place where imagination and fun transcend what’s really there, where swing sets and splash pads become portals to other worlds, that the Alexandria City Council, the Miracle League of Alexandria and the Kelley Cares Foundation partnered with major donor, CVS Health, to establish the Ruthanne Lodato Memorial Playground. Named for Ruthanne Lodato, the playground is a tribute to the work that the piano and music teacher did to support
Alexandria’s special needs community. “My mom was a lifelong Alexandrian,” says Carmen Lodato, who, like her mother, is passionate about music and works as the co-center director of Music Together Alexandria. “She worked as a musician and educator for over 30 years, first in schools, then later at Music Together Alexandria and in her private piano studio in our home. She also played the piano and organ at many churches in the area. Although she was very busy with three daughters and taking care of her elderly mother living with her, she always found time to help others. She volunteered every year with Kelley Cares and started a family tradition to serve the homeless at Christ House in Old Town on Thanksgiving. She also hosted a Christmas caroling party for our neighbors and was always the first to welcome a new family to the neighborhood.”
THE KELLEY CARES PLAYGROUND STORY
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Naturally, the playground was given a musical theme to honor Ruthanne and her long career as a music teacher. Located at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center on Jefferson Street as part of a recreation area behind the Lee Center, the playground shares a site with the Kelley Cares Miracle Field and is adjacent to the Lee Center basketball court, which was also repaired and recolored during the playground’s renovation project. Featuring accessible swings, outdoor music instruments, shade structures and benches, sensory play components and soft rubber surfacing, the playground was built to make outdoor play at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center accessible to all children, regardless of ability. “Playgrounds like this one are so important because all children should have a safe and joyful place to play,” says Carmen. “Children of all abilities can play here, but it's special because it’s inclusive to the special needs community. We should all be as inclusive as my mom was and this playground is a great place to start.”

theme. My family was involved in the design of the playground, which makes it even more personal to me. My mom would have absolutely loved this, and it’s a great honor to her and what she tried to accomplish in her work. This playground is a place where children can have fun and learn about music at the same time. My mom would love that a playground of this kind bears her name because she believed that music was for everyone, regardless of ability. It's nice to have a physical reminder of my mom's work with children and the special needs community that I can visit.”

How the playground itself came to be is a great homage to Ruthanne and her life. “The project started with the Kelley Cares Foundation and the Miracle League of Alexandria, who came together to create an accessible playground suitable for special needs children,” Carmen explains. “My mom was a volunteer with Kelley Cares and an advocate for special needs children and their inclusion in group classes like Music Together. Kelley Cares approached us to name the playground after my mom, and that's why the playground has a music

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
A RIDE TO REMEMBER
We all remember that day 21 years ago when the world changed forever—when everything we thought we knew seemed to crumble into a pile of ashes as the Twin Towers fell, first one and then the other. Then the Pentagon was hit. Our sense of security was shattered, but we came together as a nation as we mourned our losses. Then, on the one-year anniversary, hundreds of first responders gathered to ride from the Pentagon to Ground Zero to honor the fallen and remember the sacrifice so many made in rescue missions.
WELLNESS + ADVENTURE 2022 • 37
At the time, Alexandria hot spot Mango Mike’s was a frequent lunch stop for a number of DC area police, a place they were greeted with hospitality and respect. Being the owner, restauranteur Mike Anderson was approached about the possibility of feeding those hundreds of men and women who planned to gather for that auspicious ride. Naturally, his curiosity was piqued, and he inquired about going along and participating. Despite the fact that the ride was limited to first responder participants, Anderson was given the green light, so he bought a hybrid bike and began to train for the multipleday Ride to Remember. “It was our modern-day Pearl Harbor,”
Being part of such a historic event left an indelible impression on Anderson, who has deep ties to the area as the owner of Homegrown Restaurant Group. “So many of the men and women on this ride had actually been part of the rescue efforts at the Pentagon,” he recalls, “so we would ride, and they would share their stories. When we got to the site of the first tower, we all stopped and took off our helmets and had a moment of silence to reflect and remember and honor all the people who had lost their lives to this one day. It was a really emotional and incredible experience, being with these brave, pure-hearted Americans who had been through so much.”
says Anderson, who rode in honor of his business partner’s sister-in-law, an American Airlines flight attendant who lost her life when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. “There were so many senseless deaths, and it was such a terrible tragedy. We could actually hear the explosion from the restaurant when the plane hit.”

Like many things in this world, football has long been a sport dominated by men, a part of the boys’ club where anyone with estrogen was only allowed through administrative roles. But women all over the country are just as fired up over pigskin plays and flock to the 50-yard line with the fervency of any red-blooded male, so why aren’t women more represented on the field?
WHAT A DIVA
FOOTBALL + FASHION 2022 • 39
Part of that changing narrative is the DC Divas, a team founded in 2001 with the express mission of empowering women by “leveling the playing field” in sports. The organization teaches life lessons through sports, while also improving physical and mental health and speaking a powerful positive message to current and future generations of young women and girls.
Over the past 20-plus years, the DC Divas had a habit of making history. On the high school football level, they produced the first female head coach in the nation and a number of other players became coaches and team administrators as well. The Divas won three National Championships and enjoyed more victories than any other franchise in the history of football. They are now in their second year of operating as a non-profit to better serve their players and community partners with a literacy program and workforce development initiatives. Both on and off the field, these Divas are about the empowerment of all women—and that’s a beautiful

Fortunately, times, they are a-changing. Inclusivity has become more than just a buzzword and football has joined the changing face of sports. All female teams—and even male teams with some female players—are breaking the barrier, filling stadiums with fans and proving that women can play with all the strength, agility, ability and passion of a 300-pound man.

She also appreciates her role as a woman in football. “What we’re doing is important because women and girls really can do and be whatever [they] apply themselves to,” she says. “It’s important to open the door to the many opportunities and invaluable lessons that sports teach us and to close the door to stereotypes and disparities. Changing the face of football is necessary because so many young girls across the country want to play, but don’t always see that they are welcomed in this sport. Girls belong on the field too.”

Being a Diva, however, has expanded her world in valuable ways. “I love having a family outside of my family,” says Cook, who has lived in the DC area her entire life. “Being on the team has allowed me to meet people who have become some of my best friends.”
As a member of the DC Divas since 2004, Lois Cook has worn many hats—both on and off the field. Currently filling the position of wide receiver, Cook also played quarterback, tight end and special teams, making her a valuable player to have on the roster and one with a great deal of versatility. “I’ve always been athletic,” Cook notes, though that may be somewhat of an understatement.

As a woman in football, Mason knows she’s breaking barriers and loves being part of that change. “As far as being a female in football, some believe women should play, others don’t,” she says. “Either way, I don’t care. I love playing football and I believe being a woman in football is just amazing. I can’t wait until there are more of us.”
Busy though she may be with work, the late-night practice times and frequent practices at the St. James make fitting the Divas into Mason’s schedule relatively easy. Having lived in the DC area since 2018, she found a great social circle with her fellow Divas and her love of the sport can be seen in her plays on the field. In her downtime, Mason loves to spend time with her family, relax at the beach or pool and watch sports on TV.
It only took seeing the team practicing at the facility where she worked for Tara Mason to want to join the DC Divas. Over the past four years of playing the gridiron, she’s held her own as both a defensive and offensive lineman. “I’ve always played sports and I love creating memories with the team, working hard and learning the game,” says Mason, who works as the Director of Lifestyle at the St. James, which entails overseeing Super, Awesome & Amazing, the brand’s active entertainment center; Courted, their medical spa; Strivers, their retail store; Vim and Victor, their restaurant and their events business. “I saw the team practice one day and I was super interested in becoming a part of it. I asked the coach if I could join, and here I am.”

As much as she may love the physical challenge of the sport, there are other rewards for Robinson. “I like being labeled as a role model for the legacies currently looking up to not only myself but to my teammates and all women professional football players out there,” she says. “I also love that my team is so community driven. We understand that, without community involvement, these young girls will not know who we are. It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, ‘If you can see it, you can be it.’”
A civilian employee of the Navy, Robinson manages a recreational facility that caters only to single active duty Marines and sailors in addition to organizing and creating fun activities on and off base. Outside her time on the field, her hobbies include bike riding, hiking and kayaking.
FAITH ROBINSONdefensive back
Having been a DC Diva for two seasons, Faith Robinson may still be a relatively new face on the field, but the “COVID rookie” brings a lifetime of athleticism and tons of heart to the team. “I was born as a premature baby weighing just under four pounds, which caused some health challenges such as my lungs being underdeveloped,” says Robinson, who plays defensive back with plans to join the wide receivers next year. “My father asked the doctors what the best way was to build my lungs without relying on pharmaceutical intervention and was told that it was keeping me active. So that’s exactly what my father did. [He] had me swimming before I could walk, which led to always playing a sport as I got older.”

“The opportunity to make a positive impact on others is incredible.”
COACH RICH DANIELowner/general manager
A true lover of the game, Daniel also loves being part of the changing face of football. “The opportunity to make a positive impact on others is incredible,” he says. “We have such a wide range of backgrounds and experiences that make up the nearly 600 Divas alumni. Part of my role has always been helping bring recognition and respect to this incredible group of amazing women and men who continue to exemplify greatness through their talent, dedication, sacrifice and true grit all for the love of the sport and the opportunity to finally participate in it.”
Part of Daniel’s strength as an owner and GM comes from the six seasons he spent working in the NFL for the Washington Redskins (now known as the Commanders) from 1993 to 1999. “That time provided invaluable insight into the business and operational aspects of running an organization and all of those experiences are a part of who I am today,” he says.
Looking at the trajectory of Rich Daniel’s life, sports—specifically football— has always been a focus rather than a facet. The passion he brings has been instrumental in leading him to where he is now, as Owner and Team President. “Anything that resembled an athletic career ended in high school and then I transitioned into covering teams at the University of Maryland, which led to a career covering sports both locally and nationally,” says Daniel. “I started covering the Divas’ first home game as the Sports Director at ABC-7 in 2001. After that story ran on the evening news, we followed them through 2002 and 2003, producing an independent documentary. When I left ABC in 2003, I began to help the team with PR, sales and community events. In 2004, I became the team's General Manager, which eventually led to me becoming the owner of the team just prior to the 2019 season.”

“There's more to clothing than just adornment,” New York Times' best-selling author Jacqueline Carey once observed. “It does more than merely change how the world perceives us. It changes how we perceive ourselves.”
So the question becomes, in a world where fashion so famously overlooks the need for size inclusivity, how are women past a certain size supposed to perceive themselves?
FOOTBALL + FASHION 2022 • 63
truth that fashion progresses with ideology, often following changes in culture. But sometimes fashion pushes against what is accepted, redefining what we see and throwing out the rule book. It’s magical and inspiring and transformational. That’s what makes it so powerful. And whether we’re pushing boundaries or not, there is something inherent in us, as women, that needs to feel beautiful, to be seen and admired. Fashion—and, by extension, the clothing created by it—is part of that.
As Coco Chanel famously said, “Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is It’shappening.”anunerring
All sizes are beautiful. That fact should be reflected in the options available both on the rack and online. Gains have been made with regard to this, but there is still a dearth of choices that are both flattering and stylish. As a blogger and model whose blog, Blonde in the District, covers fashion in the DC area, Dani Sauter has her finger on the pulse of size inclusive fashion. She says, it is alarmingly faint. “I don’t think it’s just a DMV issue,” she says. “The issue is nation and worldwide! Pre-pandemic
“Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and included,” Sauter contends. “Style is an outward expression of who you are and it should be available to everyone, regardless of size, shape, age or height. Fashion can either be super exclusive or inclusive. I think it’s more important to be inclusive than to be so exclusive that people become marginalized by it.”
64 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
availability of plus fashion was starting to improve little by little, but unfortunately, the pandemic has back-tracked progress these past few years. Sadly, many local stores that carried extended sizing options have closed or shifted to online only, making our options even more limited than pre-pandemic. I think the broader issue ultimately stems from us being conditioned to think that style is only for people who are a certain size. It’s in the media, advertisements, digital messaging and on runways. If fashion at the top level isn’t inclusive, then it’s not going to filter down to what we see in the real world.”
Change may not be simple when it comes to altering the fashion world, but it is possible. “I think we need to shift our mindset about how we all view style and bodies in general,” says Sauter, who has worked with national and local fashion brands on campaigns, creative collaborations, messaging, consulting and modeling. “Anyone can have great style. Size doesn’t matter. Part of my mission as a fashion blogger and model is to advocate for this change and to show that women can be stylish at any size and any age. Style is not only for one size group. I think being conscious of the issue and including bodies of all shapes and sizes in overall messaging is key. The more society sees this, the more change will happen. But I also think change can come from within the community.”
While options are still limited, Sauter has some recommendations for fellow fashionistas. “Unfortunately, I’ve found it very difficult to shop in-person locally for true plus-sized clothing,” she says. “I shop almost completely online due to a lack of options in my size in store, which is a shame because I love to shop in-person. Still, there are a few locally-owned online boutiques I frequent that carry inclusive sizing, including Stella Luna Raine, Wild Gardenia Boutique, More Than Your Average and Wayre. Although they may not be local, my ultimate favorites are Tanya Taylor, 11 Honorè and By Vinnik. They provide the most elegant and elevated options in plus clothing.”
Style is an outward expression of who you are and it should be available to everyone, regardless of size, shape, age or height.
As for dressing on-trend, there are no specific rules to follow. Who should make the decision, at the end of the day, is you. “Your curves and body type should not make you any less available to trends,” says Sauter, “so I think you should try it all and ultimately wear what you feel best in.”
While it may not seem like an issue to anyone who has never walked into a store and felt excluded, there is a very clear message being
communicated that needs to be taken out of the narrative.
