ARMANDO MARINO

FAKE LANDSCAPES / MAY 28 - JUNE 19 Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents “Fake Landscapes” which is the third solo exhibition by the New York based Cuban artist Armando Mariño. The exhibition title “Fake Landscapes” embraces the theme of societal illusion. The works become a way to comprehend the perplexities of the contemporary world. Large and small oil paintings hypnotize the eye of the viewer. The perspective is a society that has been formed, where significant issues and human relations has been constructed in order to please, or sugar-coat the truth, instead of questioning it. The use of natural elements such as flowers is Mariño’s way of highlighting superficiality. The “pretty” layer is a metaphor of a curtain thrown on the current affairs relating to politics, race, sexuality, ethnicity. The new paintings in this exhibition are a reaction to the latest events of 2020, which dramatically affected society including the art world. The thematic essence of the works thereby seems to lie as much in the unseen as in what is seen. The recent works show figures in landscapes which are the foundational components of Armando Mariño’s oeuvre. The perspective of the physique changes with each piece. Some are placed facing backwards, inviting the viewer to stand behind it and look in the same direction as the subject. When they are facing us, they become the central points of the compositions. The relations between landscape and figure as well as between human and nature gains metaphorical and symbolic character. The new series of oil paintings are filled with a highly vibrant colour palette. The deep dark figures and shapes rooted in Mariño’s compositions lead into the sophisticated and bright semblance of reds, oranges, yellows and other warm hues resulting in a flowing landscape that invites the viewer to dwell between the contrasts. We are reminded what Armando Mariño does in his works. He brings together the different experiences of his mixed identities as a Cuban living in the Western society. He adds the vibrancy, optimism and energy to the dull metropolis of capitalism, where connections, commerce and communications take over emotions and experiences. The oil paintings are visually powerful and remain politically and socially engaged. Armando Marino (b. 1968 in Cuba) lives and works in New York. He graduated from the Escuela Provincial de Arte “Joaquín Tejada” in Santiago de Cuba, 1987; Jose Varona Pedagogical Institute, Havana 1992 and from Rijksakademie Van Beldeende Kunsten, Amsterdam 2005. He has exhibited widely in Europe, USA, Africa and Cuba. His works are represented in major private and public collection around the world such as Deutsche Bank Collection; Shelley and Donald Rubin Collection, US; Coca-Cola Foundation, Spain; 21cMuseum, Kentucky, US; Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba; ASU Art Museum, Arizona, US; Arttoteek Den Hagg, Nederland; National Museum of Valjevo, Serbia; University of Virginia Art Museum, US; Marcelino Botín Foundation, Spain; Howard Farber Collection, New York; Colección Berardo Museo de Arte Moderna, Sintra, Portugal; The Jorge Perez Collection, Miami, FL and The Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, MA, USA. Furthermore Mariño has been awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2011 and The Christopher Reynolds Foundation grant in 2010.
