A visitor traveling west on Marine Drive from the Lions Gate Bridge will pass the sprawling Park Royal Shopping Centre and then see the green stretches of Ambleside Park. A fixture here since its designation in 1918, the 59-acre park includes a beach, a seawall, an 18-hole pitch-and-putt golf course, a duck pond, tennis courts, a skateboard park, basketball courts, and two baseball diamonds. The beach, with its lovely views of the Lions Gate Bridge and Stanley Park, is a popular summer destination for barbecues and picnics. The seawall connects to a more challenging trail that takes runners or hikers along the Capilano River up to the Cleveland Dam. The park is also home to the wildly popular summer concert series called Ambleside Live, which has hosted performers including Kenny Chesney, Ed Sheeran and Tegan and Sara. From May to October, watch for the Ambleside Farmers' Market every Sunday, where vendors sell produce, fruits, breads, fish, jams, pickles, and a variety of crafts.

Further west, a collection of small shops and services line both sides of the spine of Marine Drive. Over the years, the district has acquired 30 out of 32 private lots on the water, and now has a vision for a pedestrian-oriented area that connects with the commercial area of Marine Drive. Along with a new condo development which will likely bring younger generations to Ambleside, this revitalization promises to add vibrancy and continue the neighbourhood tradition well into the future.

YALETOWN VANCOUVER It’s hard to imagine that the vibrant Yaletown neighbourhood brimming with chic boutiques, award-winning restaurants and elegant condos was once Vancouver’s hardworking warehouse district. Yet the narrow enclave hemmed in between Robson and Homer streets and flowing toward the northern fringes of False Creek was home to heavy industry, including a shingle mill and cooperage. Log booms floated in the industrial inner city waterway. That area was only transformed 30 years ago from featureless mud flats into a spectacular showcase for Expo 86, the World’s Fair, which also marked the city’s centennial. Today, glass condo towers and contemporary townhouses attract both growing families and dedicated urbanites to this revitalized wedge of the city that embraces its storied roots. In 1887, for instance, the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Engine 374 hauled the first transcontinental train into the city. This historic engine has been preserved at the 1888 post-and-beam Roundhouse Community Centre at the intersection of Davie Street and Pacific Boulevard. The Yaletown community converges at this arts and recreation centre, where kids can play basketball or join skateboard class while adults channel their inner artisans in the woodworking and ceramics studios. Steps away is Elsie Roy Elementary School and David Lam Park, a glorious green space with a playground—all facing the sparkling waters of False Creek. In the core of Yaletown, particularly on Mainland and Hamilton streets, distinctive architectural features serve as reminders of Yaletown’s heritage. During the 1980s, the area was rezoned, allowing for an appealing mix of buildings for residential, commercial and industrial use. Overhanging canopies and red-brick loading docks bring a character to this corridor where warehouses have been transformed into grand, loft-style residences.
