JUNE 2011 - Warm weather, barbecues and relaxing vacation time all seem especially welcome this year after such a chilly spring. As the clouds lift from Burrard Inlet, we are once again reminded that we live in the most beautiful city in the world. The wet and cold weather through the year’s early months did not inhibit real estate sales, which reached near-record numbers in February and March. Since then we’ve seen a more typical pace. According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, residential property sales of attached, detached and apartment properties reached 3,225 in April, an 8.2 per cent decrease compared to the same month in 2010. This number is also down 21 percent from March 2011. “While it continues to be a seller’s market in Greater Vancouver, last

BOOK DRIVE Story books collected to benefit Canucks Family Education Centre.

A

recent book drive organized by a brother and sister team at Mulgrave School managed to collect 3,090 books for families to facilitate literacy. This is the second year for the project, which was conceived and run by Grade 11 student Armaan Ali and his Grade 10 sister Ameeqa. Having seen extreme poverty in his childhood home of Bangladesh, Armaan says he grew up with the desire to help out. He was sparked a few years ago when he read about an area described as “the poorest postal code in Canada,” the neighbourhood near the Edmonds SkyTrain station in Burnaby. You don’t need to go far, he realized, to find people in need. One thing he and Ameeqa had in spades was books. What if, they thought, we could get all our friends’ books as well? They got a go-ahead from their school, and contacted the Canucks Family Education Centre. In March 2010 they organized a book drive, collecting 2008 books in bins at the

junior school. These were delivered by the Canucks organization to Edmonds elementary. The second annual event built on that success, involving the senior school as well. “From a very young age my sister and I were exposed to reading. We believe that education should be an integral part of every child’s life,” said Armaan, who is already planning for next year. “It shouldn’t just be a privilege.” The Canucks organization targets communities in great need, with high poverty, low literacy, and high immigrant populations, and the Edmonds area fit that demographic. “To see from concept to reality what they were able to pull off in a relatively short time, wow, it was amazing,” said Jean Rasmussen, director of the CFEC. “The parents that have received these books are really and truly grateful and they’re inspired by the willingness of these kids to want to share.”
