With the loss of a family member and several friends, 2024 has gotten off to an uneasy beginning for me.
Such personal loss serves up time for reflection, and for whatever reason I began thinking of the days before and immediately following legislation allowed breweries to operate tasting rooms.
I thought of those early pioneers of the modern craft beer revolution here in Virginia who put money and effort into crafting a bright future for their industry, knowing it would ultimately lead to competition for themselves.
An exuberance existed amongst the small batch of trailblazing brewers and owners. There was Starr Hill Brewery co-founder Mark Thompson with his larger than life, entertaining personality leading the charge on the PR front and preaching the gospel of craft beer.
Enter Steve Crandall, a developer who vacationed in Bavaria and returned home with the idea of building a brewpub called Devils Backbone in Nelson County. Crandall was a maverick personality with a can-do attitude and championed the good fight.
Legend Brewing Company and St. George Brewing Co. represented the baseline, traditional brewing industry with long-lasting experience and steady commitment.
Hardywood Park’s dynamic duo ownership and a handful of others rolled up their sleeves in the spirit of camaraderie to get the ball over the goal line.
As a journalist, that period of time between 2008-14 was incredibly fun and enjoyable. To be amongst those dynamic personalities and witness their passion and dedication; to observe and listen to their plans, hopes and dreams, and then see the ultimate fruition of their businesses realized — that was gratifying.
As time progressed, things obviously changed for these unique individuals.
The passage of SB604 was like helium inserted into a balloon lifting the craft beer industry in Virginia to unimaginable heights.
It seemed to me some of the first in-the-game folks felt the need to up their game by growing into enormous facilities. But, did bigger necessarily translate into happier?
Thompson, for one, shared with me — before he parted ways with Starr Hill — that he missed the more simple days of operating a brewery and transporting a few kegs in the back of his pickup truck in Charlottesville.
After he took a couple years off, Thompson returned more-or-less to his roots when he opened a mom-and-pop like micro brewery — The Brewing Tree.
Just a reflection…

Venturing into uncharted territories, Kindred Spirit Brewing recently unveiled its highly anticipated grand opening in Richmond. This exciting expansion represents a significant milestone for Kindred Spirit Brewing as it continues to reach for new horizons, delighting the community with exceptional craft beverages.
Nestled at 1626
Ownby Lane, Kindred Spirit Brewing’s Satellite is poised to become a celestial haven for craft beer enthusiasts. The venue promises a vast and welcoming atmosphere, inviting patrons to relish a diverse array of handcrafted brews. Notably, among the stellar selection, Headspace, the brewery’s flagship beer, will be a permanent fixture on tap. This expansion not only aims to create unforgettable experiences for loyal customers but also endeavors to introduce the brewery’s unique flavors to a wider audience. With a sprawling 5,600-square-foot layout, the Satellite boasts over 100 indoor seats and a menu that orbits around various appetizers, sandwiches, and more.
“We are delighted to open the doors of our second location in Richmond, VA. This expansion allows us to share our passion for craft beer with an even broader community of beer lovers,” said John Barefoot, owner of Kindred Spirit Brewing. “We’ve worked hard to create a space that reflects our commitment to quality, creativity, and a sense of community. We look forward to welcoming both new and familiar faces to enjoy the craft beer culture we’ve cultivated.”
As a nod to the celestial theme, subtle hints of space and satellites will be interwoven throughout the ambiance, creating an atmosphere that is both down-to-earth and out-of-this-world.
Interesting side note: Both Kindred Spirit locations are in close proximity to Hardywood Park breweries.
Self-Distribution Update
Bill Spence Sr., owner of The St. George Brewing Company and a Vice Chair for the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild’s Operations & Quality Committee, said The Virginia Beer Distribution Company becomes a legal entity on July 1 and will be fully functional at the end of 2024 or possibly early 2025.
The distribution company will be run by Virginia’s Department of Agriculture and will allow small production craft breweries to sell directly to restaurants and retailers within the Commonwealth.
New Opportunity
Greg Fleehart announced he will be taking the position of Head Brewer at Old Rappahannock Brewing Company, “working with Andrew Beale to bring amazing beers to Warsaw, Virginia with fantastic wood fired pizza, right next to Old Rappahannock Taphouse. Selvedge Brewing Now Open in Bellair Location
After three years at The Wool Factory, Selvedge Brewing is moving into its own dedicated taproom in the Bellair neighborhood just west of Charlottesville.
“We’re really excited about this transition. This move places us in an excellent location and gives our brewing operations the space we need to grow,” said Selvedge Head Brewer Josh Skinner. “In our new home, Selvedge’s mission will remain the same; serving our community with high quality beer and sharing it alongside great food in a fun, welcoming space.”
Selvedge will offer indoor seating for around 100 guests, with outdoor seating to be added in the Spring of 2024. Brewing operations will continue offsite in the near term. Once fully complete, Selvedge’s new brewery will feature a 10-BBL brewhouse with multi-step and decoction mash capabilities, horizontal lagering tanks for additional focus on traditional lager styles, space for expanded clean barrel aging and mixed fermentation projects, and an on-site canning line. Selvedge will share the almost 5,000-squarefoot production space with sister brand, Snowing in Space, a cold brew brand operated by Grit Coffee at 2415 Ivy Road.
Loudoun County Brewers Association Collaboration
The Loudoun County Brewers Association is supporting the work of LAWS Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services through a collaboration beer to honor the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary.
We now have an app! Scan here to download.
Next Chapter Pale Ale will be released on April 5. The LCBA will be offering a free tasting of Next Chapter Pale Ale at the Loudoun County Visitors Center from 6-9pm during Leesburg’s First Friday event. Eight members of the Loudoun County Brewers Association will be selling the “Next Chapter Hazy Pale Ale,” in their taprooms both by the pint and in cans, of which all proceeds will benefit LAWS. The participating breweries are Bear Chase Brewing Co, Belly Love Brewing, Crooked Run Fermentation, Hillsborough Winery and Brewery, Lost Barrel Brewing, Loudoun Brewing Co, Old Ox Brewing, and Quattro Goombas.
“We are honored to have Loudoun County Brewers Association offer a special ale during LAWS’ 40th year of serving domestic and sexual violence survivors in Loudoun County,” said Debra Gilmore, Chief Executive Officer of LAWS. “Physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by one’s intimate partner impacts more than 40 percent of women and 25 percent of men in their lifetimes. While excessive alcohol consumption is closely associated with intimate partner violence, drinking alcohol does not cause violence.
Lowered inhibitions, impaired judgement, and human choices do. We are excited to build our partnerships with local breweries – a vital part of our tourism industry – to jointly raise awareness of this distinction and that LAWS provides free, confidential, and lifesaving services for those impacted in our community.”

32 Reasons to Love NATO Fest Beer
By Jeff Maisey
Norfolk NATO Festival will once again collaborate with The Bold Mariner Brewing Company and NATO’s Allied Command Transformation headquarters in Norfolk to produce a special beer for the occasion.
Called ALLIES 32 — Stronger Than Ever, the name recognizes the addition of Finland and Sweden into the alliance’s membership of now 32 members.
German General Chris Badia, who also serves as NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation directly participated in the brewing process. General Badia hails from Bavaria, so it would seem he knows good beer.
The City of Norfolk has honored NATO’s only headquarters in North America for 71 years with a Parade of Nations through the streets of downtown followed by a NATO Village in Town Point Park featuring tents for each country to welcome visitors and share cultural and travel information as well as free items for children such as flags, pins, stickers, and food samples.
One cultural item shared by these European nations, Canada, and the USA is beer.
“This is the sixth year we have collaborated with NATO on a beer for the festival, and we are grateful for the continued partnership,” said Michael Stacks, owner of Bold Mariner Brewing Company. NATO is such a big part of the Norfolk community and enriches our local culture. My wife and I have met people from around the world and developed lifelong friendships.”
“The festival is a unique experience where one can be exposed to a variety of cultures in one place.” Stacks continued. “Part of our mission as a company is to give back and be anchored in the community; this beer embodies these values.”
The first collaboration beer was called Across The Pond, an English IPA that enlisted the help of Sir Graham Stacey of the United Kingdom. He was NATO’s Chief of Staff at the time as well as the UK’s Air Marshal.
The following year, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Denis Mercier of the French Air Force participated in brew day using hops from eastern France. That beer was
named Lafayette Lager as a nod to the Marquis de Lafayette — a hero of both the American and French revolutions — a Norfolk’s Lafayette River.
The 2024 Norfolk NATO Festival beer is a German pilsner style and uses Barke Pilsner German Malt as well as Magnum & Strisselspalt German Hops.
“Bold Mariner Brewing Company represents a mainstay of the local
also fostered a strong bond between NATO and the local community.

community that we are so pleased to be part of, and it’s a pleasure to collaborate to create this delicious beer,” said General Badia. “Bearing the name Allies32, we reflect on the 32nd member of NATO in the form of Sweden, who acceded earlier this week. It also shows a diamond, which represents the 75th year of NATO, bearing the slogan, ‘stronger than ever.’
“NATO appreciates the continuous support and inclusivity demonstrated by the Hampton Roads community,” the General continued. “The efforts of local residents and organizations have not only contributed to our success but have
“NATO stands as a testament to the strength that arises from unity. Our alliance, comprising diverse nations with distinct histories and cultures, showcases the power that emerges when nations come together for a common purpose. The cohesion within NATO reinforces the idea that, collectively, we are stronger and more resilient.”
ALLIES 32 — Stronger Than Ever
Pilsner will be served during the Norfolk NATO Festival Week (April 14-21) at Bold Mariner’s tasting room as well as in Town Point Park following the parade on Saturday, April 20.

Funktastic Meads Branches Into Brewing
By Carl Hott
Matt Carroll, the man who created some of the most celebrated meads in the country, is a not-so-secret craft beer nerd.
At The Answer Brewpub in Richmond, he frequently hovers near the top of the check-in list on the beer rating app Untappd, the results of which are posted above the bar there. He is also no stranger to the back-end process - before founding Funktastic, Carroll, 41, was an avid home brewer.
In April, he will circle back to his roots.
Funktastic Meads officially opened on January 6, 2002 in a strip mall on Alverser Plaza in Midlothian. His foray into meads - wines fermented with honey - began purely by accident. A friend asked him to pick up a bottle at a meadery for him. After trying some for himself, he began to imagine the possibilities.
While homebrewing with friends about 10 years ago, “we were always doing crazy stuff. We added things like kids’ cereal before anyone else was. And we thought, ‘Why can’t we
do crazy stuff like this in mead?’”
At the time, according to Carroll, there were not many meaderies pushing boundaries - none of them attempted to mimic the flavor of coffee, cotton candy or Hawaiian Punch, for example. And so, after developing a large and impressive portfolio of mead styles, he decided to take his show on the road to get a wider opinion.
Through previous jobs requiring travel, Carroll struck up friendships and made several contacts. As Funktastic Meads began to grow, he followed up on some of those contacts to become the sole meadery pouring at select beer festivals across the country.
“What we do crosses over really well into craft beer,” he explained.
As an evangelist for meads as well as craft beer, Carroll thought adding beer taps to the meadery was a logical extension. Not only would patrons have more choices, he said,

but it would provide an opportunity to introduce his flagship product to a larger share of the general public.
“Mead is a niche market, and people tend not to try it,” Carroll said. “Thirty years ago, craft beer was in a similar situation. If someone went to a craft brewery and had a bad beer, they’d be hesitant to go again. But now, craft breweries are all over the place. They make craft beer exciting.”
Carroll pointed out how breweries have begun offering other options for patrons, such as wine, hard seltzer, cider and yes, even mead. “It’s backwards for us,” he said. “We’re doing the reverse.”
Carroll has a planned target opening date of April 4. He’s purchased a 2-barrel fermenter, which he will use in conjunction with other breweries in and out of the state on a contract basis. He plans to initially offer five beers in cans to go, including lagers and IPAs, with three rotating options available on tap. True to the spirit of the meadery, the first three brews he plans to release will run the gamut: a Japanese rice lager, a fruited sour, and a pastry stout. The latter, “Southside Stout,” is a barrel-aged stout aged on toasted and raw coconut, honey, hazelnut, macadamia nuts and cinnamon coffee. Already posted on Untappd, it has a 4.62 rating out of 19 reviews as of this writing.
While he has no plans for distribution at the moment, he sees possibilities in the future of a partnership with area restaurants: he could provide beer to them, and they could provide food options for him.
As with his meads, Carroll believes choice is essential to creating interest in the craft beer fan base.
“We offer uniqueness because of our small batches: our taps (for mead) change just about every week. My hope is that we can do something similar with craft beer,” he said.
Carroll believes people should keep open minds about anything they try, whether it’s meads or beers. It has certainly helped diversify the styles he enjoys.
“I started drinking fruit beers,” he said. “A friend kept bugging me to try a stout, and I developed a palate for them. Then I turned the friend onto IPAs.” Carroll grinned. “Now, he drinks more IPAs than stouts.”
As more people stop by to try the new beers, Carroll hopes to foster the laid-back vibe of breweries he admires, such as The Answer.
“The Answer is my ‘Cheers,’” he said, referring to a famous television bar where everybody knows your name. “I’ve been in this community for a very long time. It’s been cool to see it change.”

Drinks To Explore This Spring
By Jeremy Bender
Finally, as the temperatures begin to warm and the seasonal beer style hues lighten, we welcome springtime and all the great, refreshing flavors that come with it.
When it comes to independent brews made in Virginia, here are some options to explore on your favorite patio or at one of these fine breweries.
Billsburg Brewery
Williamsburg
Located on the scenic marina yards away from the historic Jamestown Settlement, Billsburg Brewery has a strong lineup of springtime beers including its Classic Lager and Driftin’ Pale Ale.
On April 13, Billsburg will host its 2024 Pilsner Invitational where 15+ craft breweries will compete for awards. A great way to sample some new pilsners.
Crazy Rooster Brewing Company
Powhatan
This brewery seems to win a lot of medals at the VA Craft Brewers Guild’s annual awards ceremony. Reason enough to get yourself on over to give these liquids a spin: Oakbridge Blonde Ale, Late Day Shadow NEIPA, and the Touche De Grape Barrel-Aged Saison, aged five months in oaky Chardonnay barrels.
Also try these: Alectryomancy White Ale and Feleena Mexican Lager.
Commonwealth Brewing Company
Fairfax City/Virginia Beach
Commonwealth’s beach-meet-industral chic vibes are matched by its fruit-forward beers. If you love gose style beers, request Zombie — brewed with pineapple, orange, passionfruit and apricot. Also consider their strong-ish 6.8% ABV Berliner Weisse named Botanicalia.
Brewing Tree Beer Company
Afton
This is Mark Thompson’s place — yeah, that bearded guy that started Starr Hill Brewery back in the day. He’s returned to his small batch roots and offers an ever-changing cast of craft beers. It’s hard to predict what you’ll find on tap on any given day, but the quality is top notched, and the grounds/setting is beautiful on Route 151. If you see these, do give ‘em a taste: Flip Flop Pilsner, Watermelon Wheat, Twice As Weiss, and Just Peachy (a golden ale with peach puree).
If Gina’s in the kitchen, order whatever she’s stirring.
Elation Brewing Norfolk
Can we get a “Helles, Yes”?
Damn right we can — and in cans — at Elation Brewing. The Norfolk establishment produces some hellaciously delicious, crisp and clean lagers including the German-style Helles Yes and Larchmont Lager.
Twin Creeks Brewing Company
Vinton
We’ve always wanted to walk into this brewery and hear that wicked “Twin Peaks” soundtrack music playing in the background. But in the meantime, we’ll invite you to share a 460 Farmhouse Ale, Blueberry Lemon Gose, Lake Life Lager, and the Cosmic Daze NEIPA.
Big Ugly Brewing Chesapeake
Early spring is a great time to visit Big Ugly Brewing and plop down on one of the outdoor chairs with a full glass of Peake Lager, Road Worthy Pilsner, Sunbeam Blonde or Sidecar Saison. All light, easy going down brews.
- 16 - APRIL 2024
Award-winning beers to give a spin at Crazy Rooster.
Patch Brewing Company
Gordonsville
Take a little ride out to the countryside this spring and hang a turn into Patch Brewing Co’s parking lot. Several to try include the award-winning Home Run Hefe, Pylon Pilsner, and Lempicky Light Lager — say Lempicky Light Lager three times as quickly as you can.
Benchtop Brewing Company
Norfolk
Mini Machine, featuring a forklift on its label, has returned for early spring. The 5.5% sessionable Citra IPA packs a fruit punch but without the knockout ABV.
While at Benchtop, order a pint of Wishing Tree Helles Lager, Eroica Vienna Lager, and the British-inspired Crispy Whip. Brewmaster Eric Tennant has done a brilliant job over the past year developing a proper, European head on his beers, and what a difference it makes. All brewers should take note. Wonderful!!!
Brothers Craft Brewing Harrisonburg
Brothers is famous for its big, dark, buzz-heavy variant brews, but these folks also have an equally delicious lineup of lighter options. If it’s a May Day, crack open a Cerveza Hermananos (Mexican-style lager), The Great Outdoors (Pale Ale) and Lil’ Hellion (Helles lager). All three at under 5% ABV.
And speaking of May, look for the seasonal release of Gosecolada (a pineapple and coconut infused sour).
COVA Brewing Company
Norfolk
Talk about tasty. COVA Brewing recently celebrated International Women’s Day with the release of Girl Dinner Gose. It’s described as a “fruit punch Gose with mango, pineapple, blueberry, blackberry, peaches, orange, cranberry, and strawberry. Hibiscus and vanilla bean soften all those powerful flavors in order to deliver the perfect girl dinner experience.”
We’re not sure all girls like fruity beers, but we sure do when they’re done right and this one is great. Also try the flagship East Beach Blonde.
Barley Naked Brewing Co. Stafford
If you’re still nursing a St. Patrick’s Day hangover, the good news is Irish red ales make for brilliant spring evening drinking. Barley Naked scored a gold medal last year with its Rock Hill Irish Red Ale at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.
Their standards are high so you can also do no wrong with Deja Vu Apricot Witbier, For Fox Sake Golden Lager, and Full Moon Hefeweizen, which we like better than that other Moon beer.
MoMac Brewing Company Portsmouth
Head brewer Chris Richards has been producing some outstanding liquid with both MoMac Brewing Company and Nansemond Brewing Station.
Look for Citra Back & Relax IPA to reappear on tap as well as in to-go 4-packs this spring.

Those heads are for real. Benchtop Brewing Company is on to something great.
The look of love: Twin Creeks Brewing Company

Lost Rhino Brewing Co Ashburn
The big news coming from Lost Rhino lately is the release of its fan-love Imaginary Girlfriend, which the brewery describes as a “West Coast-Style IPA awash in nectar-like papaya and mango flavors with a resinous finish.” We love the fun limited edition glassware and packaging.
On the light and refreshing side, go for Rhino Chasers (pilsner), Hammer Down (Helles-style), and Meridian Kolsch.
Stable Craft Brewing Waynesboro
In addition to its thoroughbred craft beers, Stable Craft also produces some excellent hard ciders that are especially inviting during spring. The April go-to is Flanneljack Cider made with ginger and cinnamon spices. Also try the White Peach Cider, Sly Dry Cider, Blackberry Cider and Green Apple Cider.
And if you love sour ales, don’t sleep on the Punchbowl Social Pomegranate.

THE JAMPACKED CRAFT BEER & MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS TO BROWN’S ISLAND IN RICHMOND
ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2024.
The festival was first held in 2022. The goal is to create a sustainable event that combines nationallyrecognized jam bands with local, regional and national craft beverage brands. WestRock, a packaging supplier for more than 400 craft beverage companies nationwide, supports these craft brands with paperboard and corrugated packaging that focuses on eliminating the use of plastic in the beverage industry. The festival is meant to be both inspirational and aspirational as they are committed to creating a waste-free event using only recyclable materials and helping to create a great local experience in the Richmond area.
The line-up for this year’s event features Kind Hearted Strangers, Sicard Hollow, Daniel Donato & Cosmic Country, Kitchen Dwellers, and Greensky Bluegrass. The gates open at 2:30pm and the music starts at 3:30pm and runs until 11:00pm.
Thirty craft beverage companies, representing beer, cider, canned cocktails, and non-alcoholic beer, will be on-site offering two products each. Of the thirty companies, thirteen are Virginia-based including Alewerks, Ardent, Aslin, Benchtop, Bold Rock, Commonwealth, Hardywood, New Realm, Ocelot, Stone, Veil, Triple Crossing, and The Virginia Beer Co. All of the featured breweries and cideries are WestRock packaging customers.
The event features cans-only beverages and paper-based food packaging which are recycled in their efforts to generate zero landfill waste.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the James Reiver Association, a member-supported nonprofit organization founded in 1976 that serves the waterways and communities of the James River. Their goal is to fulfill their vision of a fully healthy James River supporting the ecosystems, wildlife, and people that depend on it.

Savoring Saison at blindhouse
By Jennifer Waldera
With an eye on moving closer to the mountains and family and living a more relaxed lifestyle, Tyler Wert and his wife, and now business partner, Nicole moved to Roanoke from Richmond in 2022. But the move also afforded Wert the opportunity to transform his home brewing into a full-blown brewery operation in the heart of Roanoke. Together, they now own and operate Blindhouse Beer Company.
Wert broke into the brewing industry in 2017, and quickly fell in love with brewing Saison and mixed culture brewing.
“I started as a homebrewer as so many do, but got my start professionally in Richmond at Triple Crossing Brewing. There I worked my way up from cellarman to brewer, to barrel program manager and eventually head brewer. I worked there for 5.5 years before deciding to pursue my own venture. I got a chance to brew a ton of different styles, but that is where my passion for Saison emerged.”
And from there, Wert went on to further pursue his adoration for Saison while weaving in his favor for seasonality.
“Saison is the style I fell in love with. It can be a little confusing for people because it is actually an extremely
broad category. We focus on “mixed culture” Saison, which means we utilize a mix of wild yeast and bacteria to ferment our beers.
It is believed that historically Saison, a farmer’s beer in Belgium/France (hence the term farmhouse ales), would have had a wild yeast component due to the lack of fermentation knowledge at the time, so it’s a bit of a nod to that. I’m also a big believer in the seasonal aspect and I love using what is growing locally around us to reflect each season.”
Realizing that these types of brews were not prevalent, he wanted to open a brewery that brought the style front and center -- and differentiate it from other spots.
“We are different from a lot of breweries because of our focus on mixed culture Saison brewing. Our beers feature expressive yeast that provides a lot of citrus and stone fruit qualities as well as a refreshing dryness and light acidity. We pay special attention to serving these beers properly. It takes a little bit longer to get a pour here, but we believe proper foam and a beautiful pour are worth the wait.”
Blindhouse’s beers feature different flavors and they’re expressed differently when they pour, but there is also special care taken during the brewing process.
“We have a fairly unique brewing process here at Blindhouse. I actually utilize extra brewing capacity at other breweries (currently we brew just down the street),

pump wort into an IBC tote, and truck it to our location for fermentation. Here all of our beers are open fermented with our house mixed culture. This is a blend of classic Saison yeast and wild foraged yeast from some family land in Callaway, VA. After primary fermentation, most of them are laid to rest in oak barrels for an extended period. From there, the barrels are blended and sometimes infused with various local fruits and botanicals.”
In terms of sourcing, Wert works hard to source from local providers. Some are as close as Roanoke itself, while others are throughout the Commonwealth or in a neighboring state like North Carolina.
“We do our best to source locally/regionally. All of our malt is Virginia or North Carolina-grown. We primarily buy from Epiphany Craft Malt. All of the fruit and herbs we use are Virginia-grown, and mostly come from the greater Roanoke area. The only place we have to break this mold are hops. Good quality hops grown in Virginia are hard to come by, so we tend to source those from the Pacific Northwest or Europe at times.”
The building that houses Blindhouse’s taproom was built in the 1940s and Wert works to make the historical spot a place of respite and relaxation.
“Our taproom is quaint and cozy with a lot of natural wood and a relaxing ambiance. It is set up with lots of eclectic wooden tables and chairs and various plants. The goal was to create a European Beer Café combined with drinking in your best friend’s living room.”
While only a few beers can currently be purchased togo, all can be purchased in the taproom where Wert also hosts occasional live music, fundraisers, and food pop-ups. Plus, Blindhouse has its eye on serving natural wine and cider, too. In the meantime, Wert is pleased with the local community response and how people have come to love Blindhouse’s offerings.
“I strongly believe that given the chance, there’s something in the Saison/Farmhouse Ale family of beers to satisfy everyone and so far, we’re really happy with how people have embraced it.”
