What does it mean to “be the best” or more specifically “the best craft beer?” There are many factors that could contribute to a beer being awarded this title – ingredients, flavor profile, technique. As I was pondering this question, I came across the following quote – “Being ‘the best’ is giving your all into what you love to do, every single day.” I think this could describe what the brewers in Virginia do every single day –putting their all into brewing what they love – delicious, award-winning craft beer. In this issue, we celebrate the award-winning craft beers throughout the Commonwealth and shine a light on the folks that show up every day to do what they love best! On the cover, we feature Mike Pensinger, Head Brewer at Parkway Brewing in Salem, who took home the coveted Virginia Beer Cup for Best In Show for Billy Boys Scotch Ale at the 2024 Virginia Craft Beer Cup Awards Ceremony presented by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild in late July. In addition, we showcase all of the award winners from 33 different categories.

Speaking of award winners, we’ll also tell you who took home honors at this year’s 12th Annual Battle of the Beers in Virginia Beach this past September. Over forty breweries participated in Hampton Roads’ largest beer festival all to raise money for local charities!

Also in this issue, we’ll spotlight three breweries to check out this Fall -Twisted Oak Farm Brewery (White Post), Sojourn Fermentory (Suffolk), and Atlas Brew Works (Alexandria)

In November, Virginia cideries will be spotlighted during the annual Virginia Cider Week November 15-24. Tastings, cider pairing dinners, educational events, apple festivals, and more will be held at cideries throughout the state. Take a look at our events calendar and visit www. virginiacider.org for more information.

This issue is the perfect guide to plan your scenic fall trip around the Commonwealth and explore all of the award-winning breweries and cideries along the way!

Cheers!

757 Battle of the Beers: People Pick Afterglow, Brewers Elation

The Beach Ambassadors held its 12th annual 757 Battle of the Beers event in Virginia Beach recently. Over 40 breweries in the Hampton Roads region participated.

Winning top honors in the People’s Choice Award category — by event attendees casting their vote — was Norfolk’s Afterglow Brewing Company’s Mother-fluffer.

The brewers of the 757 region also had an opportunity to taste and grade their fellow brewers’ liquids. Elation Brewing’s That’s Amore Italian Pilsner was top point gainer.

In addition to the two beer categories, each brewery participated in a fun, mini games competition. 1700 Brewing won that category.

Each year, the all-volunteer Beach Ambassadors team holds the 757 Battle of the Beers as a fundraiser for local charities. Beneficiaries include St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children and Hope House Foundation. Each brewery participated in hopes a “win” would result in a check for their non-profit of choice. TSC Alliance benefits from Afterglow, Warrior Hearts from 1700 Brewing, and the Pink Boots Society of Hampton Roads thanks to Elation.

Here are the results:

Rotating food trucks served their purpose for nearly two decades, but now Port City Brewing Company has decided to carve out space in its tasting room area for a Northern Virginia favorite — La Tingeria, a taqueria with stand alone locations in Falls Church and Spotsylvania.

“Our customers have been asking for more consistent food options,” said Port City founder Bill Butcher. “We are delighted to partner with David (Peña) and his team at La Tingeria. Their menu is both authentic and unique, and the quality is top notch. Of course, tacos and craft beer are a natural pairing.”

For Peña, La Tingeria’s owner, this new location will allow him and his team to further expand into Northern Virginia and meet the demands of his fervent and growing customer base. “It was an honor that Bill and Karen Butcher chose us, La Tingeria, to lease out their new restaurant space. I’m excited to develop new dishes and take our guests on a journey of my life through my art and food.”

Legend Lives On

If you thought Legend Brewing Company was throwing in the towel in Richmond, think again.

“We’re still here,” said Vice President of Operations Dave Gott.

Social media has been active with images of bottles of Legend classics such as Brown Ale and IPA rolling off the assembly line.

Best of VA 2024

Parkway Brewing Company won the 13th Annual Virginia Craft Beer Cup when its Billy Boys Scotch Ale was crowned Best in Show.

The statewide competition is presented by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild.

What makes Billy Boys such a good beer?

“It’s just a solid beer,” said Mike Pensinger, Parkway’s head brewer. “It’s a super malt-forward ale. We use RVA Yeast Lab’s Scottish ale yeast, so it’s local to the state.”

Pensinger said Billy Boys is only brewed once a year and exclusively available in Parkway’s taproom in Salem. The 3.5 barrels of the ale sells rather quickly. Patrons should have a taste by the first two weeks of October, though given its recent major accolades the brewery is considering a second production cycle this fall.

While Billy Boys Scotch Ale hasn’t been a known seasonal to Virginians outside the Salem/Roanoke region, it has been no stranger to competition judges far and wide.

“The year before last we won bronze at the World Beer Cup with it,” Pensinger said. “We won Best of the Southeast in the US Beer Championships and a bronze in the Virginia Craft Beer Cup. And now this.”

According to the Guild, a record 128 breweries competed

in this year’s competition, including 20 new participants. Brewers submitted up to four beers each, judged in 33 different categories. This year’s competition saw a record 473 beers entered.

“We are all extremely fortunate to be living in Virginia where craft brewers across the state continue to raise the bar, as evident in this competition. I personally am fortunate to be able to serve Virginia’s brewery community,” said Charlie Harr, Head Judge.

The Virginia Craft Beer Cup continues to be the largest state competition of its kind in the United States.

Brett Vassey, Virginia Craft Brewers Guild President & CEO, shared this: “The Cup competition continues to grow, and the quality of independent craft beer being judged is absolutely remarkable.”

In recent years, lagers have done exceptionally well in the Guild’s competition. That a Scotch ale took home top honors this year is encouraging to Pensinger. He hopes more people will explore the less popular beer styles.

“I think more people should close their eyes and taste a beer and see what it tastes like rather than going, oh, I have to have the latest IPA.”

Customer experience and the perfect pilsner pour are the priority at Sojourn Fermentory. Photo courtesy of the brewery.

Czech The Pour

In mid-August, Sojourn Fermentory opened its doors to the community. Nestled in the heart of Suffolk, Virginia, the brewery promises to offer both locals and visitors a new experience, combining high-quality beer and cider with an inviting ambiance.

As the first of its kind in the area, Sojourn Fermentory is poised to become a beacon for craft beer and cider enthusiasts. Co-founders Michael Pawley, Scott Osborne, and Jinson Chan bring together a wealth of experience and a shared vision. The trio, with varied backgrounds that range from engineering and physics to chemistry and pastorship, became united by their passion for craft beer as well as community, and aim to create a space where people can enjoy exceptional beverages as well as incredible food.

Located in Suffolk’s growing

Bridgeport community, Sojourn Fermentory has chosen a prime spot for its operations. The 9,200-square-foot facility is part of a newly developed mixed-use property that provides easy access for residents and travelers.

“We spent over a year surveying and studying the Hampton Roads area and found Northern Suffolk to be an ideal match for our concept,” says Chan, the Co-Founder and Director of Marketing. “The community here aligns perfectly with our business model, with a supportive demographic and a vibrant atmosphere that we believe will foster our growth and success.”

At the core of Sojourn Fermentory’s offering is a commitment to tradition, specifically in its beer production. Head Brewer Michael Pawley, who honed his craft in Austria under the guidance of a Czech brewmaster, brings a deep respect for European brewing

techniques. As a result, he uses a European multi-step decoction process for the mash and follows a traditional lager fermentation schedule.

“Michael wants to present customers with a European bar experience. Michael’s visionary pursuits surpass mere expectations; they stand as a testament to his steadfast dedication to craftsmanship and innovation,” Chan says. “Rooted in his earnest desire to provide patrons with a traditional and enriching brewing encounter, his endeavors epitomize excellence in the craft and capability to create a business that will flourish.”

The brewery will focus on progressive European lagers and Kölsch in addition to modern IPAs, fruited sours, and barrel-aged stouts. For cider lovers, Sojourn Fermentory’s menu will include a range of sweet and dry varieties, all made with real fruits.

Chan says that the experience and the commitment to a detailed production process are what sets Sojourn apart.

The taproom will also feature Czech Republic-inspired lager service, complete with dedicated Lukr faucets that offer a unique tasting experience by varying the foam levels.

Complementing the beverage offerings is a carefully curated menu designed to enhance the overall experience. The kitchen, led by renowned chef Mario Owens, who brings 30 years of culinary expertise to the table, will serve Romanstyle pizzas, Florence-style sandwiches with freshly baked bread, and a selection of small plates.

“We’re serving up Roman-style pizza, cold-fermented inhouse for 72 hours,” Chan says. “To start, our limited pizza menu includes classics like cheese, pepperoni, and meat lovers. Soon, we’ll expand to feature sandwiches made with our homemade bread. For sides, we’re offering delicious options like karaage, salad, and truffle fries.”

The ambiance at Sojourn Fermentory is crafted as thoughtfully by the owners as its beer. The space is modern, minimalistic, and laid back. Both pet-friendly and familyfriendly, and fitted with TVs that are perfect for game-days, the owners intended for the space to be a comfortable spot for anyone. Additionally, the indoor beer garden opens up to an outdoor patio, and the property’s adjacent courtyard with a stage is perfect for live band performances.

The team at Sojourn has already begun collaborating with many local breweries, including Bluejacket, Benchtop, and Crooked Run, among many others. These partnerships have resulted in unique brews that reflect the creativity and expertise of all of the brewers involved, from a sessionable lager and Marzen to a solid German pilsner.

In addition to these collaborations, Sojourn Fermentory is committed to giving back to the community. As part of its grand opening celebration, the brewery pledged to donate 5% of revenue to Neighborhood, a local charity dedicated to ensuring that the income of every family in Hampton Roads surpasses the cost of living.

Beyond the Fermentory’s initial offerings, there are plans to expand their cider selection, host beer dinners with breweries from around the world, and even organize one of the largest lager festivals in the Coastal Virginia area.

“We’re fully focused on elevating the tasting experience and educating our local community and guests about the art of Czech-style beer pours,” Chan says.

From the expertly crafted beer and cider to the thoughtfully designed space and menu, Sojourn is a place to gather. Whether you’re a craft beer or cider aficionado or just looking for a new spot to unwind, Sojourn Fermentory offers something for nearly everyone. As Chan says, “Our mission is to create a place that fosters community while offering high-quality beer, cider, and food.”

Clarke County Lands its First Brewery with Twisted Oak

At a time when many breweries are cropping up in Virginia’s urban places like shopping malls and industrial parks, Twisted Oak Farm Brewery is the real, country deal.

The first brewery in the County of Clarke is fashioned out of a hay barn built by Jay Duvall, local farmer, wood craftsman and skilled builder. The new brewery uses a 10-barrel system, originally from the Dirt Farm Brewery on the east or “other” side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Duvall still uses a half barrel system for pilot batches.

Duvall, who first started brewing beer in college in 5-gallon buckets in 1984, has come a long way as a brewer and quickly admits that some of his dorm beer was not very good.  “It was worlds apart from what I make now,” Jay says with a laugh.  “My friends back then were like. ‘I don’t want to drink it! Pour it out.”

It does not take long to realize that Duvall is a meticulous and thorough brewer. Heck, even his “one-off” mistakes can sometimes turn into some really good beer.  “I made a stout and it turned out too sour. Not intentionally. It must have gotten some little wild yeast in it along the way. People like it. It is in the cooler if someone wants to taste it. Everybody seems to be happy with it.”

That “one-off” seems representative of Duvall: a genuine original. Although he still has a wood shop in nearby Winchester, he bought his farm in 2002 and spent years

clearing it from overgrowth.  For five years, he grew top grade “rocket fuel” hay that was sold to feed racehorses at Hollywood Park Casino at Charles Town, West Virginia. His brewery, which he opened this spring with Twisted Oak operations manager and partner Missy Tuttle, is named after a specific oak tree on the farm. The pours on his taps are beautiful, handcrafted wood turns that could be stand-alone museum art pieces. He made all the tables, the counters and most of the barn wood interiors from a single walnut tree in Millwood. The 36-inch diameter tree provided enough wood for Duvall to create 12-foot boards that eventually became beautiful tables and much more.

The rustic vibe of Twisted Oak is inviting

A native of Baltimore County, Maryland who grew up in Hempstead, Duvall is a Jack-of-all trades and the master of many. He makes beautiful furniture from wood milled on his farm near the idyllic village of White Post. Named after the signpost standing in its center at the intersection of Berry’s Ferry and White Post Roads, the white, wooden post was erected in 1750 by Colonel George Washington to mark the route on the Old Dutch Wagon Road.

Duvall’s 60-acre farm is encircled by a trail that rolls past his greenhouse, the wood shop barn and the brewery as well as some rural landscapes, trees and barley fields. The latest barley harvest is being malted for some beers down the road, including a Dunkel. “I have lots of beers coming,” says Jay. “The new Toberfest is named for my family. My grandma Tober immigrated here in 1905. My great grandfather was a cabinet maker from Germany.”

A top Twisted Oak favorite appears to be the Jay’s Pale Ale, an original beer that stands out among the rest and is named after the founder. But, there’s also Arlo’s Amber Ale, named for one of the friendly brewery dogs. Arlo’s Amber has a sweet malt/caramel flavor which should be good with S’mores around one of the fire pits that are under construction. A Kolsch and a hazy round out the beer selections which definitely will expand over time. Some tasty picnic snacks are sold at the brewery and exotic local food trucks do brisk business on Fridays and Saturdays.

It is hard to keep up with Duvall. After a friend passed away last year from pancreatic cancer, Duvall learned from another friend that her kidneys were failing and she was doing dialysis nightly for the past 6 years. Duvall matched his blood

with the friend and then did a series of additional tests for a week in August of 2023. He donated his kidney to the friend this past summer and was back to work in a short amount of time.

Duvall has many projects, but it seems like some will be coming sooner than later. “We may build another building for art and a distillery,” he admits. His love of his land and beer is drawing crowds to this authentic destination.

“Twisted Oak Farm Brewery is the true epitome of Clarke County’s sustainable agricultural farming, land conservation and small business entrepreneurship,” says  Michelle A. Ridings, Director of Economic Development & Tourism for Clarke County. “As we build Clarke County’s new tourism program, the Twisted Oak Farm Brewery is a major attraction with its welcoming, cozy, modern barn that’s tucked away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday hassles, yet still offers all the fun of beer tasting, food trucks and live entertainment.”

Clarke County’s first brewery opened in March and its debut is generating some steam. Twisted Oak Farm Brewery will be one of the locations on the new Sip Shenandoah Trail, a cooperative tourism venture by Clarke County and the Town of Front Royal, Virginia. The Sip Shenandoah Trail will include about 10 locations featuring breweries, wineries, a cidery and a meadery.  To join the trail, there’s an easy sign-up at Loyal Brew, an on-line digital network.  There’s no app to have to download.  Once you’ve visited a certain number of locations on the Sip Shenandoah Trail, you will receive discounts or a promotional gift.  It is expected to be introduced this Fall.

Atlas Plants a Flag in Virginia

Daniel Vilarrubi, Director of Brewing Operations for Atlas Brew Works, is a true local, having grown up in Hyattsville, MD and studied chemistry at the University of Maryland. A beer guy who never really got into homebrewing, but a “switch was flipped” he tells me after Franklins Brewery & Restaurant in Hyattsville became his local. Daniel and a good friend came to the realization that as their knowledge of and love for good beer grew, their satisfaction with their jobs was headed south, so they made a fateful decision to start down a path to getting full time jobs in the industry. For Daniel that included an internship at Franklins and a short course in brewing at the Siebel Institute in Chicago and finally a job as shift brewer in 2014 with Atlas at the original Ivy City location, north of the H Street corridor, which opened in 2013. And that friend? That friend was and is Adam Reza, Director of Brewing Operations at Port City Brewing in Alexandria, VA. Daniel mentions he and Adam had seen each other just the day before as part of Port

City facilitating the shipment of beers from local breweries to Denver for entry into the beer competition at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival.

Atlas Brew Works opened a second location in Navy Yard District in 2020, just steps away from Nats Park and it was during the planning thereof that Atlas began its relationship with Andy’s, the local pizzeria chain that got its start at Tyson’s Galleria. The Atlas folks wanted a food partner for their new location, leaned towards pizza, and when they tried Andy’s pizza, they were immediately enamored and a partnership was born that has been extended to the new Atlas location in the Carlyle & Eisenhower neighborhood of Alexandria, a thriving district that now includes a Wegman’s and new shops, businesses, and restaurants.

When asked about the decision to expand into Virginia, Founder and CEO Justin Cox mentions that quite a few sites were considered, but in the end, “weighing the differences between the locations, the infrastructure at Carlyle Crossing fit perfectly for our brewery. More than that, the Alexandria area’s tight-knit support of local businesses and breweries made Atlas want to be part of that community,” and one can guess the fact Daniel would be overlooking a brewing only a couple of miles away from where Adam overlooks the making of good beer at Port City had a really nice coming full circle feel to it.

Atlas Alexandria opened June 21 of this year with a 10-bbl brewing system from Deutsche Beverage + Process brewing equipment supplier

very similar to the Navy Yard system, with a significant difference being the location of the serving tanks above the bar. Daniel mentions loving Deutsche’s willingness to get creative when customizing a system to best work in a particular space. The new location has a fair amount of outside seating and upon entering, features a large bar and seating ahead and to the right, the Andy’s pizza to the left, and the brewery in the rear. Daniel notes things have generally gone well although delays have prevented actual brewing on the Alexandria system, but it was to be the very next day that they hoped to fully start up the system and get brewing started. The year-round beers include a Pilsner, Lager, West Coast IPA, Pale Ale, Stout, and Blood Orange Gose, and seasonal releases such as a hefeweizen, double IPA and next up, an Oktoberfest beer brewed in the modern German Festbier style (a golden lager rather than the older, more amber Märzen style). The beers are tagged as “solar powered beer,” a reference to Atlas Brew Works being 100% solar powered at the Ivy City production facility via a large rooftop array. The Alexandria location features sustainable energy sources for the new location, and a water reclamation process will be employed to lower both water and energy consumption.

Atlas Brew Works stacks up well with its quality, canned product line.
