Drinks ahoy, friends!
August is designated Virginia Craft Beer Month and it’s a great time of year to hit the road and explore some of the Commonwealth’s 300+ breweries.
In this issue, we feature some suggestions pairing both new and seasoned craft beer makers with sites and activities ranging from coastal beaches, historical connection, and city centers to scenic mountain drive areas and hike/biking trails worthy of your sweat and effort.
Also in this issue are spotlights on a pair of recently opened breweries that will have an immediate impact in popularity and quality liquid — Afterglow Brewing in Norfolk and Charlottesville’s funky, retro-vibed SuperFly Brewing Company.
And speaking of pairs, we take note of Basic City Beer Co. and COVA Brewing Company’s back-to-back World Beer Cup golds. Two in a row is no fluke.
For serious beer nerds, writer/homebrewer Chris Cook turns his attention to a new blending house in Northern Virginia. There’s an art to the mix.
Finally, it seems the past few Augusts have been busier than ever on Virginia’s highways and byways with locals and tourists alike staying closer to home. You’ve probably noticed the clogged traffic lanes and rest stops along the way.
All this leads to more state police and small town sheriff patrol cars monitoring your speed. So, my friends, be safe out there. Be sure to enjoy yourselves and taste a few craft beers, but maybe consider an overnight stay — camping, hoteling, or otherwise.
Support your Virginia craft breweries!

Hello, Virginia
Silver Branch Brewing Company, a production brewery and taproom located in Silver Spring, Maryland, will invest $3 million to open a second location in Fauquier County. The company is pursuing additional production of its beer and will establish the new operation at the former Wort Hog facility to expand its presence and increase its ability to brew a wider variety of products. Virginia successfully competed with Maryland for the project, which will create 38 new jobs.
Silver Branch co-founder Christian Layke said, “We are excited to join Virginia’s vibrant craft beer community. I grew up in Vienna and my co-founder, Brett, is from Great Falls, so bringing our beer into the Commonwealth is a lifelong ambition. For us, beer is more than a liquid, it’s a welcoming social experience we call Gemütlichkeit (German for comfort) and it’s essential to our ethos.”
O’Connor Downsizes, Armed Forces Sets Up Camp in Norfolk? Woah!
Craft beer fans in Norfolk received a shock when Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s office announced Armed Forces Brewing Company would operate its headquarters where O’Connor Brewing Company was currently located.
Founding owners Kevin and Penny O’Connor followed this announcement by thanking longtime supporters of the brewery — which opened in 2010 — and made it clear the O’Connor brand was not going away.
The O’Connors said their beers would soon be produced and packaged by a third party brewer — a contract brewer based in Virginia — but did not disclose the brewing partner at that point. They also shared a new O’Connor outlet could be in the works, and for fans to stay tuned.
At press time, Armed Forces Brewing Company said they would take control of the O’Connor building on July 24.
The brewery’s plans received immediate pushback from some local residents and community leaders, though the deal seems to have been in the works for some time..
“Governor Youngkin and Secretary of Commerce Merrick called me a year ago and asked me to look into Virginia and what Virginia had to offer, and we did,” said Armed Forces CEO Alan Beal. “The Virginia Economic Development Partnership stepped in with the City of Norfolk and the Hampton Roads Alliance and presented us a relocation incentive program.”
The news continues to evolve at our time of going to press so look for updates on our Facebook page.

It’s a big deal to win an award — gold, silver or bronze — at the World Beer Cup competition. For a brewery to garner golds for the same entry in consecutive years is nothing short of amazing.
Such good fortune this year was bestowed upon a pair of independent craft breweries in Virginia: COVA Brewing Company, a small, neighborhood brewery in the East Beach section of Norfolk and Basic City Beer Company, with breweries in Waynesboro and Richmond.
COVA repeated with Aloha State of Mind in the Contemporary Gose category. Basic City Beer Company doubled with its Basic Ought Lager in the International Dark Lager category.
“Winning a gold medal in any year in the World Beer Cup is a really special achievement, but going back to back is I think really a benchmark, a testament to our quality and our consistency as a brewery and our lager program and how much it’s developed,” Basic City’s selfdescribed “wizard of wort” and master brewer Derek Hornig told NBC affiliate WVIR 29 in Charlottesville.
For Matt Topping, the head brewer
at COVA, winning with Aloha State of Mind, a smooth, beautifully brewed sour made with passionfruit and hibiscus, was personally satisfying on several levels. Both the recipe and name of the beer were inspired by head brewer Topping’s time in the Aloha state. Topping lived on the Hawaiian island of Maui for nearly three years and worked as a brewer at Maui Brewing Company.
“I got to spend several years in Hawaii as did my wife,” explained Topping with sparkling glee in his eyes. “We wanted to make something that was as reminiscent of the islands as we could. Passionfruit is a very big thing out there. Hibiscus is on every street all over the place.
If you think of Hawaiian print shirts and swim shorts, hibiscus flowers are on them.
So, between passionfruit and hibiscus, it seemed like the perfect pairing for reminiscing about Hawaii.”
COVA Brewing Company beers are almost exclusively sold at the brewery. They operate a 7-barrel brewhouse with three 7-barrel fermentors and two 15-barrel fermentors.
Being a brewery that serves a small beach community neighborhood, they
offer some basic styles to please the families that visit the brewery, which also offers coffee and baked goods.
Sours, however, are very popular and a style Topping has a real — literal — passion for.
“At COVA, we have the opportunity to be able to make dozens of different types of goses and sours and play around with different types of fruits, spices, herbs and things.
“Passionfruit, I think, is an outstanding pairing with a sour beer. It’s already a tart fruit on its own. It’s got beautiful aromatics to it and the flavor comes through nicely.
“We’ve done some beers with peach. Peach is great, but it takes a lot of peach for that flavor to come through. A lot of times you have to add apricot to make it taste more like peach.
“This (Aloha State of Mind) tastes like passionfruit scooped right out of the fruit. A little bit of salt keeps it refreshing. Then, we added hibiscus.”
Should COVA and Basic City score a third gold next time out, we’re talking New England Patriots-style dynasty in the making.
Stay tuned.

Exploring Virginia with a Beer Along the Way
By Jeff Maisey
Most vacationers travel through Virginia with specific destinations in mind.
Some flock to the beaches to bake in the afternoon sun, others wish to explore the scenic mountain drives, hiking trails, small towns, natural wonders, points of historic interest, and walkable urban downtowns for restaurants, art galleries, and concerts.
And, yes, there are those who prefer a romantic culinary excursion.
All along the way, travelers — some of whom are residents of the Commonwealth and others from outside the state — have
an opportunity to take a break and enjoy a taste of some of the 300+ independent craft breweries across Virginia.
With this in mind, we’ve put together some suggestions of breweries that motoring consumers might consider while taking in the plethora of sights, sites, and activities Virginia has to offer.
Based on these sort of lifestyle preferences, we’ve put together an unofficial guide based on the following: Birthplace of the Virginia’s Craft Beer Renaissance - Route 151, Roanoke & Vicinity: Valleys, Mountains, and City, The Coast, History Trek: Williamsburg/Civil War Trails/Fort Monroe, Natural Beauty Zones, and Urban Zones - Hearts of the City.

In the back pages of this magazine, you’ll find a complete guide of all the breweries listed by region.
For this featured spotlight we’re suggesting a variety of options — both new breweries and established ones — but by no means do we include everything. We’ll leave a little serendipity to your exploration and hope you discover a few breweries of interest on your own. That’s part of the fun of travel, isn’t it?
Take lots of pictures and remember to tag us on your social media posts. We’ll be watching your fun.
And, by the way, August is officially designated Craft Beer Month in Virginia.
Birthplace of the Virginia’s Craft Beer Renaissance - Route 151
The trailblazing breweries along Nelson County’s winding, scenic Route 151 established Virginia’s first official beer trail — the Brew Ridge Trail — and the owners of these breweries were instrumental in lobbying state legislators to grant beer makers the right to operate tasting rooms so consumers could purchase products in the same way wineries were allowed. This was revolutionary back in 2012.
Back then, Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet was considered the starting point and the trail ended at Devils Backbone.
Today, the official trail includes cider makers and the roster features the following: Blue Mountain Barrelhouse, Blue Mountain Brewery, Blue Toad Hard Cider, Bold Rock Hard Cider, Brewing Tree Beer Company, Bryants Small Batch, Outback Brewhouse, Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Wild Man Dan, Wood Ridge Farm Brewery, and newcomer Three Notch’d Brewing, which operates in the former Wild Wolf Brewing Co. location.
This trail makes a great day-trip or weekend excursion. A great, one-of-a-kind place for lunch or an early dinner is the Blue Ridge Pig. Exceptional BBQ and do order the dill potato salad. You’ll thank us later.
Roanoke & Vicinity: Valleys, Mountains, and City
The Roanoke Valley region is considered the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge and billed as “America’s East Coast Mountain Biking Capital.”
Perfectly situated between the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway is downtown Roanoke, making the Star City an ideal base for exploring the region’s many hiking and rugged biking trails, Carvins Cove Recreation Area, and other outdoor activities. Play during the day, and then enjoy the comforts of a downtown hotel room — with shower — and explore the convenience of brewery/restaurant hopping in the walkable city core.

from Big Lick Brewing Company (one of Roanoke’s oldest) and Golden Cactus, a fun Southwestern Santa Fe-style brewery.
If you’re an enthusiast who likes to be “first,” be sure to stroll right over to the recently opened Blindhouse Beer Company for some unique, open fermentation brews.
Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen & Brewery and Olde Salem Brewing Company are also located in the core city center and offer a nice distinction between large brewing company and micro sized.
A longer walk takes you to the must-visit A Few Old Goats Brewing. If you enjoy live music to go with that beer, venture over to Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage. A quick drive or bike ride from downtown.
You’ll get a great workout by spending the day at Treetop Quest Explore Park, where your just reward is a pint at Twin Creeks Brewpub, which is inside a converted, traditional Virginia farmhouse within the park area.
Should you simply be in need of a break driving or biking on the Blue Ridge Parkway, access/exit onto East Washington Ave. and find Twin Creeks main brewery.
Over on the other side of the valley area is Salem, reasonably accessed by those seeking refuge from the Appalachian Trail, where you can “get bent” sampling some IPAs at Parkway Brewing Company.
The Coast
The Hampton Roads region has largely been promoted and branded as Coastal Virginia by tourism professionals. Also referred to by old-timers as Tidewater and newbies as The 757, nearly 40 independent craft breweries operate in this Southeastern corner of the Commonwealth. It’s a hub for the state’s major performing and visual arts, major concert venues, and the command center for the US Navy and NATO’s North American headquarters.
This region is also dominated by waterways, from the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, James and Elizabeth Rivers, and the Great Dismal Swamp. These waterways also provide numerous recreational aspects from chartered deep sea fishing, jet skiing and dolphin watching to sunbathing on sandy beaches, surfing, kayaking, and hiking the wetlands of First Landing State Park. For a brewery within walking distance of the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, put on your flip-flops and head to The Bunker by Young Veterans Brewing Company, Smartmouth Pilot House, Vibrant Shore Brewing, and Back Bay Brewing Company.
If you’re beaching it at Ocean View on the Chesapeake Bay, COVA Brewing Company and The Bold Mariner Brewing Company are where you’ll want to dock yourself.
If you’re heading to the beaches and fishing marinas along Shore Drive, don’t miss Commonwealth Brewing Company and Pleasure House Brewing Co.

Also considered as Coastal Virginia is the entire Eastern Shore. A best bet option is Black Narrows Brewing Company in the old fishing town of Chincoteague and Cape Charles Brewing Company in — you guessed it — Cape Charles.
On the peddle stones of Colonial Beach, you can look across the Potomac River at the Maryland coastline, then mosey over to Ice House Brewery & Kitchen and call it a day.
History Trek: Williamsburg/ Civil War Trails/Fort Monroe
History abounds across the Commonwealth, where blood was shed and beer was brewed.
An ideal place to start is Jamestown Settlement, where English explorers established a foothold the New World. Right across the parking lot is Billsburg Brewery, overlooking a small marina and a weekend hub for cyclists and Harley clubs who end their rides on the Colonial Parkway.
Not far (10 minute drive) from Billsburg is Colonial Williamsburg, an open air museum depicting daily life of the 1700s with recreated building and history storytelling.
Beer, of course, was a staple of those American revolutionaries and you can enjoy a pint of old recipe beers like Old Stitch in watering-holes such as Chowning Tavern, Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, and King’s Arms Tavern. Old Stitch is brewed for Colonial Williamsburg by the award-winning Alewerks Brewing Company, located way on the outskirts of town, yet well worth the 15-minute car ride.

Back to the historic Colonial area, Precarious Beer Project is a highlight for modern, cutting-edge craft beers. Try their tacos and play a game in the arcade while you’re there.
While on the topic of the American Revolution, you can visit the site of the Battle of Great Bridge (small museum and battlefield) in Chesapeake, and then hit Big Ugly Brewing a mile down the road.
Also in the Tidewater region is the historic Fort Monroe. After visiting the Casemate Museum and walking the ramparts, pop into Oozlefinch Beers & Blending and, if you’re in the mood, checkout their latest sensation, a grape hard soda.
As we shift gears to look at Civil War era site with nearby breweries, just beyond the Fort Monroe island is 1865 Brewing Company, Virginia’s first Black-owned brewery. 1865 was the year the 13th Amendment was ratified, thus finally abolishing slavery in the United States.
For those who are fascinated with Civil War, Virginia was literally a battlefield state with perhaps more blood spilled in its soil than any other state in America.
A few Civil War battlefields that should be high on your list to visit with a nearby brewery to reflect on history over conversation and cold one are as follows: Petersburg National Battlefield (site of the longest Civil War battle, visit Trapezium Brewing Company right after), Sailor’s Creek Battlefield (last battle of the Civil War, visit Three Roads Brewing Company in nearby Farmville), Fredericksburg Battlefield (visit Red Dragon Brewery), Manassas National Battlefield Park (site of the first major Civil War clash, grab a brew at nearby Eavesdrop Brewery or at Sinistral Brewing Company in Manassas’ Olde Towne), and Ball’s Bluff Battlefield (don’t miss Leesburg’s historic downtown, Black Hoof Brewing Company, Black Walnut Brewery, and tiny Loudon Brewing Company). Be sure to veer over to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War in the town of New Market, then stay in Luray and visit Hawksbill Brewing Company.
No history tour is complete without paying homage to some of Virginia’s oldest breweries including Legend Brewing Co (Richmond) and The St. George Brewing Co (Hampton).
Finally, we can’t speak of history without encouraging you to tour the Virginia Beer Museum in Front Royal. Beer sure to walk over to Vibrissa Beer before and after.

Blazing a New Trail on the Virginia Craft Beer Frontier
By Chris Cook
If there’s any downside to the explosion of craft beer over the past two decades – and there’s probably not – it’s that the once-unique take on beer that craft once was has become commonplace. With most cities and towns in Virginia laying claim to their own craft brewery, and standard tap rotations of IPAs, lagers, pale ales, stouts, and now seltzers nearly everywhere, there seems to be little room left for craft beer innovation.
But while craft beer may have simply reached the point of being unable to improve on perfection, Mieza Blendery
Founder Alex Lynch has managed to blaze a new trail on Virginia’s beer frontier.
“Historically, blenderies have existed for quite a bit, but in terms of American breweries, it’s not the most common,” Lynch said. “It’s a different business model and production approach in addition to a different creative approach.”
As a professional brewer for more than a decade – with stops including Lost Rhino Brewing in Ashburn, VA, and Bear Republic Brewing in Sonoma County, CA – Lynch is intimately familiar with the traditional brewing process of mashing grains, boiling wort and hops, and using yeast to ferment the resulting concoction into beer. However, Mieza strays from that traditional path by making fermentation the true creative driver of its creations.
All of Mieza’s wort – the sweet, tea-like form beer takes before it’s fermented – is brewed offsite. It’s not until it arrives at Lynch’s cellar in Alexandria that the real magic of Mieza begins. With that wort serving as a semi-blank canvas, Lynch uses a well-curated selection of wine and spirit barrels, unique varietals of local fruit, and his own seasoned palate to carefully blend beers that are complex and unique to the point of being irreplicable.
“[In traditional breweries], most beers go through an assembly line process.
- 20 - AUGUST 2023
brewNEWS/blending
You have a different recipe you’re brewing, you’ll ferment at a different temperature, and package at a different level of carbonation. When you brew that way, you’re making a single component that’s meant to stand on its own.
“A blendery, in contrast, what you’re doing is making a lot of different beer ‘components.’ A lot of times those components you’re making, you wouldn’t want to drink on their own. They’re very unbalanced, which is why we call them ‘components.’ It needs to be part of a blend, but once it’s part of that blend, you couldn’t have achieved that finished product as a single recipe.”
In addition to the unique methods Mieza employs, Lynch also relies on the often unpredictable nature of spontaneous fermentation and barrel-hosted fermenting agents to impart unique flavor and aroma characteristics. Each barrel – of which Mieza has now amassed more than 80 – sustains its own mixed culture of yeast and bacteria, which provides Lynch a diverse set of vessels to use as tools of fermentation.
“There’s a lot of unpredictability, so you want to plan to a far greater extent to take advantage of circumstance,” he said. “You plan for contingency and you have backup plans. You’re trying to maintain and increase the diversity of your barrel cellar to take advantage of the happy accidents mixed cultures provide. As an example, I had a three-year-old spontaneous beer that I wanted to make an imitation of a gueuze with. The blends I made were okay, but I wasn’t loving them. But, when I took that three-year-old beer and blended it with a younger saison, I liked that a lot more.
Mieza’s blends are exclusively barrel-aged sours at this point, with recent offerings including blonde ales aged on apricots and green cardamom (Keeper of the Dance); grape skins, juniper berries, pink peppercorns, and lavender (RRose); Virginia blackberries with a touch of vanilla bean (Red Right Return); and on sweet cherries, sour cherries and anise (Ceramic Gnomes).
The creation of those blends is also a lesson in patience, as Mieza’s component beers may ferment and age anywhere from six months to three years. It took Lynch that long to build up his stock of barrels and beers before he was finally able to move into Mieza’s current space in 2022 and open the doors to Mieza’s tasting room in June 2023.
But just as Mieza’s stock has grown steadily over the years, so too has Lynch’s customer base since opening.
“I thought these beers would be a niche of a niche – and in many ways they are – but it’s been exciting to see how many people come in,” he said. “We get a lot coming in who bounce around between wineries and distilleries, and they’ve maybe never heard of sour beer or don’t know what mixed fermentation is. There are people who have been outside of the craft beer world, but they’re connecting with these beers. They’re not as beer style-focused or into trading or collecting beers, but they appreciate something that’s part of a specific beer’s story or the processes that go into its creation.”
Beer drinkers can visit Mieza’s tasting room and get a pull from the tap or a bottle to take home. Per Lynch, many of his bottled offerings continue to evolve as they age, allowing patrons to not only take home a unique brew but also take part in the unique process that has established Mieza as a trailblazer in Virginia craft beer.

Afterglow Brewing Shines in Norfolk’s Railyard District
By Diane Catanzaro and
Here’s some exciting news for beer lovers! Norfolk’s newest brewery held their Grand Opening the weekend of July 8. Afterglow Brewing is now open for business at The Railyard at Lambert’s Point! We were there for the soft opening and enjoyed excellent beers, friendly service, and are thrilled to have a new brewery in this super-sweet location between Old Dominion University and the Sentara-CHKD-EVMS Medical Center.
The Railyard at Lambert’s Point is still under development and is a great example of how Norfolk is combining adaptive reuse of older buildings with new construction to create an entertainment district that will have restaurants, breweries, entertainment, outdoor events, and office and retail space. While most of this new destination is still a construction site, Afterglow Brewing is ready to quench your thirst right now with a brand new brewery that seats 40-60 indoors, combined with a large tented outdoor space and open-air yard. Afterglow can accommodate up to 240 persons in these combined spaces, where customers can enjoy firepits, foosball, or “the big game” on one of the indoor or outdoor television screens along with great beer.
Afterglow’s founder and head brewer Josh Evans is a former physical therapist who loved his field but was ready for a career move. Partner Jeff Hartline, also a physical therapist, was inspired by Josh’s vision to create this family-friendly destination brewery in Norfolk. Today, this dream has become a reality; the name Afterglow represents the feeling of accomplishment in bringing this brewery dream to fruition. As medical professionals, Josh and Jeff lived in a world of “relative value units” used to determine payment, also known as “RVUs”. Instead of RVUs, they now deal in IBUs and craft brews.
Josh is a long-time homebrewer and former member of the Hampton Roads Brewing & Tasting Society. He admires Sam Calagione, who leveraged his homebrewing chops to found a little start-up called Dogfish Head Brewing, now one of the premier craft breweries in modern history and part of the Boston Beer Company family. Josh is quick to praise his wife Amanda and father-in-law Sal with the support and love that helped to make this venture possible. As part of Josh and Jeff’s business plan, Josh studied brewing science to earn certification through the Cornell Craft Brewing Certificate Program, and also traveled several times to Axe and Arrow Brewing in New Jersey to gain handson brewing experience in a commercial brewery.
Of course, you are interested in learning about the beer! The beers offerings will change regularly, as Josh is brewing
on a nimble 7-barrel system that allows him to vary the brews according to season and customer demand.
At the opening, we were very impressed by Cone-fection, a uniquely fragrant and delectable cream ale brewed with vanilla, brown sugar, and a hint of cinnamon. The fragrant aroma will transport you to your favorite ice cream cone memories, perhaps a childhood walk on the boardwalk where the waffle cones lured you like sirens to a hand-dipped scoop or two of tasty ice cream. Quaffable due to the light cream ale base, but with a tantalizing aroma and flavor that will perhaps lead to a discussion of whether it is more reminiscent of a waffle cone, sugar cone, or cake cone. This beer is cone-fection perfection.
IPAs were represented by Lazy Hazy, a New England style IPA. This version is low in hops bitterness, instead the Amarillo and El Dorado hops provide a hint of pineapple and tropical fruit, making it very approachable even for those who typically find IPAs too bitter for their taste.
Right Track Wrong Train is a fruited sour, full of passionfruit, guava, and orange. While too often breweries offer American versions of goses and other ‘kettle sours’ that are over-the-top tart, this one is balanced and not so aggressively sour that the fruit is overwhelmed. Nicely done.
A pilsener-style beer, brewed with ale yeast instead of lager, wasn’t available at press time but we look forward to trying it. Josh calls it a ‘pseudo-pilsener’ due to the use of ale yeast instead of lager yeast. The use of ale yeast saves time because lagering takes too much time and people want their beer now! Don’t you want your beer now? Head over to Afterglow and get that beer right now (check opening hours!) While they don’t serve food, they will regularly have food trucks, and also share a parking lot with Sanctuary DMZ, which has some of the best tacos this side of the border.
Hope to meet you in the Afterglow! Location: 2330 Bowdens Ferry Road, Norfolk.
Opening hours: Tues through Thurs 3 - 9 pm, Fri 2 - 10 pm, Sat 12 - 10 pm, Sun 12 - 8 pm.

Unplug and Connect at Superfly
By Jennifer Waldera
After years of working in breweries and over five years of working toward the dream of opening his own space, Ed Liversidge is on the verge of opening Superfly, one of Charlottesville’s newest breweries. Liversidge’s vision is to create a space that features well-crafted brews in a unique space.
“I felt like there was an opportunity to have a place that was cool and funky to hang out, a cool bar with really good beer,” Liversidge said.
Liversidge spent time previously at Thomas Hooker Brewery in Connecticut, earned his brewing certification through the American Brewers Guild in Vermont, and has tended bar at Random Row for several years (and created a collaborative brew with them, as well), all while working full-time in the world of finance. Throughout his time in Virginia, Liversidge has enjoyed the commonwealth’s breweries, as well as their individuality, which was part of his inspiration for his own project.
“Each of [the breweries] really represents the personalities of the people and who run them --
I love those places,” he says of breweries like Rockfish and Random Row.
With appreciation for those breweries
and their beers, Liversidge wanted to create a space with his own vision in terms of both beer and ambiance in a way that reflects his personality and passion.
“I spent years honing a really select list of beer styles. I want to share that with people. I feel like my approach to brewing is to look for styles that have been perfected for generations -- classic styles -- and then I create my own version and improve.”
Liversidge’s love of all things analog and nostalgic will shine in the space on Charlottesville’s Preston Avenue when it opens in the latter part of summer. From tables crafted from a bowling alley lane in Culpeper to tap handles individually handmade from skateboards by a maker in California to booths bought (then refurbished) from an Italian restaurant in Charlottesville, the space is intended to ooze nostalgia and cultivate comfort with a warm, funky vibe. And, with a passion for vinyl, he also bought a record player for the brewery, intending to create an opportunity to not just play albums, but for people to be able to sell as well.
“I want it to be a place where people can unplug and connect with people on a human level. I want that and the beer to be a platform for people to make human
connections and experiences.”
Liversidge credits the brewing community as the foundation for him being able to build his own brewery. From Random Row and Rockfish to Patch (and others), he says that he has received nothing but an outpouring of support that’s incomparable in any other industry.
“It’s a community — I’m experiencing that firsthand. There can be scary parts, and the way people have helped reassures me that I’m doing the right thing. They’re not doing it because it looks good, they’re doing it out of kindness. It probably speaks to the kind of kindness they’ve experienced. To be a part of that community is so exciting.”
In terms of the community, Liversidge also hopes to give a platform to what he says is a burgeoning underground music scene in Charlottesville. Additionally, he hopes to partner with other local businesses to create various other events.
“I want it to be a place where it’s super inclusive -- that people come and feel welcome, and that it’s not an intimidating or pretentious place. They can come in, pick a beer, and be treated with kindness. My hope is that it translates into a good experience. I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t going to pour my heart into it.”
