e’re Back!
Now that we are allowed to get 50 people together outdoors again, it was great to see so many of you show up for our first Cars & Coffee event! Hopefully, you were able to attend either of the Cars & Coffee on June 27th in Victoria or Parksville, or will attend on July 10th in Courtenay to celebrate the Club’s 25th anniversary with complimentary coffee and goodies. Since we appear to be on track for Step 3 in BC’s Restart plan, we are expecting to be able to increase numbers at all indoor and outdoor events planned past July 1. Club emails, social media and the website calendar will keep you informed of upcoming events, information on registration and any limitations related to COVID-19 that are ongoing. The 25th anniversary planning committee has been very busy with the three summer picnics (one each in South, Mid and Up Island), the 25 th anniversary clothing, merchandise and the year-end gala planned for October 23rd in Victoria. As always, our Club activities only happen because of the wonderful people who volunteer their time to either serve on the Executive or help out with putting on events. Without them, we would not be able to offer the variety and number of events we do. If you think you can lend a hand or are even interested in a position on the Executive, we would love to hear from you. Looking at the website, it’s great to see so many members have been participating in the 25 Roads for 25 Years challenge. From the results and the number of roads that have been driven, I can see I have a long way to go to catch up with those who have completed a lot more drives than I have! We’ve been impacted by the pandemic for over a year now, but in spite of all the restrictions our Club continues to grow with lots of new members signing up. I look forward to meeting our new members and connecting with all members at a Cars & Coffee gathering, a drive or anniversary event in the near future.

t’s been all go on our part of the MotorsportReg.com website recently. We’ve added and are adding more events along with all the previous 25th Anniversary Gear that is there at the moment, but stuff is selling pretty fast, so if you want something please do not wait because as they say “quantity is limited”!
Head over to page 34 where all the MSR links are and please keep an eye out for Tim’s email where our new Club events may be first introduced! VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

July Zone 6 Update
Y
esterday was the first day of Summer and my first Father’s Day without my Father, who passed away in March. I wish he could have seen this return to “near-normal”. We are experiencing record high temperatures and drought already. PCA is
also experiencing record growth, with over 140,000 members. I receive copies of all certificates of insurance for moving car events in Zone 6, and a couple of weeks ago I received 17 in one day. Although I never really counted before, I’m sure that was a record. It’s good to see after more than a year of working hard just to have anything other than a virtual event. There’s hope that the border with Canada may open soon. PCA’s main event, The Porsche Parade, will be held in French Lick, Indiana, in July. We won’t have too many people from Zone 6 attending, but we will be well-represented. Linda and I will be driving her Macan to French Lick and will be returning on Route 66. It will be
our longest Porsche drive ever. During the same week, Canada West Region will be holding a multi-region event in Sun Peaks, British Columbia. I have great memories of our first Escape to Sun Peaks and wish we could return, but the event was filled before we knew whether the border will be open. Maybe next year. With all the new members and new tours going on after this long lull, please remember and remind others that tours are not competitive events. They are supposed to be stress-free drives where we can enjoy our beautiful scenery. There are always some that want to exercise their Porsches after getting them out of hibernation. We have plenty of driver’s educa-
tion events for that, not tours. There is nothing more aggravating than to have part of the group get separated because someone decided that they didn’t want to follow. Even if you’re not planning on leading a tour, please review our Tour Standards on the PCA website and make sure you can follow them. They are there for our safety. I look forward to seeing many more of you out there in the Zone.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted a Porsche. My metallic blue 2014 Boxster is my first Porsche and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Living in Victoria I have always noticed the Porsche gatherings and lines of hot cars driving by and wished I could be one of them one day… now I am! Becoming a member of the PCA has been fantastic as I’ve gotten to meet so many great folks who all love their cars and have so much knowledge to share. I work as an animal chiropractor here in Victoria and my practice consists mostly of dogs, some cats and the odd bunny or guinea pig. My favourite drive so far is going up the Malahat to Qualicum Beach and beyond. The Island has probably some of the nicest roads in the world although one day I hope to take the car south of the border and drive to California along the Oregon coast. Although my sexy Boxster is my first Porsche, I can guarantee it won’t be my last.

25 Roads for 25 Years Challenge – June Update The 25 Roads for 25 Years Challenge is back in full swing now that Vancouver Island travel restrictions related to COVID-19 have been relaxed. My inbox filled up quickly and it took a few days to increase its capacity, so apologies for the emails that bounced back. I’m excited to announce that all members can now view the Challenge results! Go to the VIRPCA website and click on the 25 Roads Challenge under Events. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see a RESULTS button that takes you to “Results by Road” to see which roads have been driven the most, and “Team Statistics” to see which teams have been out driving. Click on a road or a team’s name for stories and photos. It’s entertaining and also a good way to get information on road conditions and tips on places to eat and stops to make. Big thanks to Karl Hoener for setting up the tracker for us. Sonia and I will do our best to keep the results updated on a regular basis. We have just over 50 teams out there driving, and I’m pleased to say that every road has been completed at least twice. Here are this month’s highlights and updates: Road Six: Mile Zero is still the route most travelled with almost half the teams completing it It appears Teams Gosse and Dempsey had an epic trip up north Team Gosse has crossed the finish line as the first member to complete all 25 Roads well done! Who will be next? We have confirmation that Pickles Road on Denman is not to be done, it is now a dead end The only new update is for Road 18: Drive the Valley. Sonia and I drove it right before Team Gosse and we’re not sure which one of us got more lost, however he ran into a locked gate. It's at the very end of McCoy Lake Road where the instructions say to make a right onto Stirling Arm Drive; he had to go back and all the way around to get the photo on Stirling Arm Dr (see pics on next page). There are lots of roads to explore in the area so have fun and let us know if you find a better route. As always, be sure to also check out the VIRPCA Facebook page and #virpca25roads on Instagram for photos and stories.

Don’t forget, you still have time to register! The Challenge runs until October 1, so there’s lots of time left to participate. Just come up with a team name and email it to me at 25Roads@virpca.org. Take photos during each drive and send me an email so I can post your results. Either include the photos in your email, or tell me you’ve posted them on social media. Complete rules and instructions can be found on the VIRPCA website (under Events, 25 Roads Challenge) and in the Driving Log you received in the mail.

Trevor Ross thought this email from Ron deserved to be shared Hi Trevor, Adventurous day yesterday to Salt Spring. We had 4 cars, my 356, Rob's Gullwing, a friend's Fiat Spider and another friend's Alfa Romeo. We drove up to Duncan, had breakfast at the Doghouse, then went to Crofton to catch the ferry. One of the guys noticed my engine smoking oil in the ferry lineup, so we opened the engine lid and there was oil everywhere. Visions of massive bills danced in my head. We had time, so we checked things over and found nothing obvious. Added some oil, and I texted Arthur Connor, a teaching friend and amazing Porsche expert on Saltspring, hoping he could help.
VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
JULY 2021 Page 32
He invited us over right away. He had a lift and an amazing shop, ready to go. He discovered that an aluminum washer had failed on the oil filter canister. He reached into a drawer, pulled out a better copper one, and cleaned up the bolt holding the filter cap down. Fixed! He recommended Mobys pub in Ganges for lunch, so we drove the northern part of the Island on the way there. When we were leaving, he tossed me the keys to his '59 convertible that he's had for 40 years. It's almost a part of him. I was honoured to say the least and we traded cars at the home of another racing friend, Gregory Campbell. He's building an amazing shop complex on the south end of the Island, and has an amazing array of older Porsches, engines and projects. After getting a tour there, we headed to the ferry, only to miss one by five minutes. No bother, we found a table at the pub nearby and had a third meal together as a group. It was a great day. There's also a market near the ferry and they had a wine choice that us manual drivers should love! With the car trouble, I did about 45 miles on Saltspring, and about 128 for the day from home and back.

By VIR Past President
John McGurran
VIR Competition Chair Are you interested in helping plan or organize competition events for the Club? There is an opportunity to join the leadership team and rekindle the spirit competition among our members. The position has been vacant for several years; let’s change that. Our touring and social events are very well organized and attended but without someone in charge of competition, it has disappeared. We have a small and enthusiastic Time-Speed-Distance Rally contingent among our membership but competition is a broad category and there are many types of events we could offer to members. Here are some of the forms competition in VIRPCA might take. If any of this resonates with you and you would like to offer some of your time and enthusiasm to its development on the Island, contact President Tim Evans president@virpca.org Also, talk it up at Cars & Coffee. For starters, it would be great to get our Autocross/Slalom program up and running again. It provides an inexpensive and fun way to demonstrate the superior handling and performance of our cars. There are outstanding Tracks/Circuits in the area to visit alone or with other clubs. Hand in hand with competition is Driver Education. Who among us would not benefit from 1:1 instruction from a certified trainer? A big part of driver education is safety. PCA takes this very seriously and has published extensively on the subject. It has been years since we offered Gimmick Rallies (surely there is a better name) which are similar to a TSD Rally but do not depend on driving speed, duration or arrival times. They are the epitome of fun…and part of every Porsche Parade.
Show and Shine or Concours events are another form of competition which we could offer where the cars are judged (or not) for overall beauty and style. PCA Club Racing events are an organized race series for Porsche owners. While this may not be something we offer, our Competition Chair might explore opportunities for training and racing in other nearby PCA Regions. Rookie drivers must complete the Club Race Licensing School. If you would like to see the Club move in this direction or if you have some time to offer to its development, reach out to President Tim president@virpca.org
