Deriving from ‘ Dweep - Rawana’ meaning the island of King Rawana , and later the founding King Vijaya named it ‘Thambra panni’ meaning golden sand. Ancient Greek geographer, Claudius Ptolemy when mapping the world, called the island ‘Taprobane’; and the Arabs called it ‘Serendib’, (the island of Sihala’s). The Portuguese called it ‘Ceilao’ and the Dutch ‘Seilan’, translating from Pali language ‘the land of lions’. Towards eighteenth century British called it ‘Dominion of Ceylon’ until it gained independence in 1948. In 1972 it became Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, call it what you will... have a rich maritime heritage that precedes many of these nations who ruled her for over half a millennium. History reveals that the world’s first ever seagoing craft was built; first century AD circa . It is also recorded that during the reign of King Parakrama Bahu 1 (1153 - 1186), a flotilla of ships were dispatched to invade Burma and South India denoting the high level of engineering prowess this island nation possessed, and the ‘Kayts’ island nestled in the Polk Strait (northern Peninsula) has been the centre for shipbuilding during that period. Archived chronicles claim that majority of vessels that ploughed the Indian ocean at that time, were built by the maritime craftsmen of this little pearl in the boundless Indian ocean. It is also believed that they were as large as 200 feet in length and 60 feet in width capable of carrying 800 personnel approximately. Although, many foreign countries ordered ships ‘built in Sri Lanka’, the prospects dwindled hence 11th century... as the colonial commercial interests superseded indigenous skills during the occupational years...
thus, many capabilities of this island nation was somewhat stunted...
Until 1974: a new chapter began and we embarked on a perpetual journey... in search of excellence in quality and moral character.
