The former Miss Universe, who was last seen in Bejoy Nambiar’s action-thriller, David, recently tweeted about the news to her fans. Lara has two other films in the offing, Fitoor and No Entry Mein Entry. From being the television heartthrob of millions of viewers in Pavitra Rishta to his successful film debut in Kai Po Che, followed by the success of Shuddh Desi Romance and PK, Sushant Singh Rajput is already a name to contend with among the new generation of heroes. Presently, the versatile actor is eagerly looking forward to his next release, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in which he will be essaying an altogether different character from the ones he has attempted so far. The actor talks about the character and his journey in films.
How challenging was the idea of playing a character like Byomkesh Bakshy? For me the toughest phase to attempt any role is to let go of myself and my persona and merge with the character in the film. Once that is accomplished, you can take up the challenge of taking up any role be it Byomkesh or even the roles that I played in Kai Po Che and Shuddh Desi Romance. Transforming into a character is a gradual process but the realization only dawns towards the end of the film that a part of the character you are playing has become a slice of your life. In the case of Byomkesh Bakshi, I got into the psyche of the character a month before I started shooting for the film. You seem to be inclined towards doing unconventional roles, instead of the

typical conventional hero that we see in commercial films. Why? I decide to go ahead with a film only if I find the script sufficiently exciting. On the other hand, I find conventional roles a tough proposition. That does not mean I am uncomfortable doing a film with the regular song and dance saga. As I am a trained dancer and an expert in Kung Fu, I have no problems doing dance and action. Besides, I don’t believe in going on a signing spree. I believe in doing one film at a time because I allot four months to prepare for my role in the film. After completion of the film, it takes me some time to come out of the character, so it is a long process. Having said that, I am definitely game for doing a film with song and dance moves. Recently I have signed a film with Homi Adajania which has a very good story and some songs too and
I guess I will look like a typical hero in it (smiles)..... What prompted you to take up the role of Detective Byomkesh Bakshi? Did you find any similarities between the character and the kind of person you are in real life? I decided to go for Byomkesh Bakshi, because it was among the few scripts that I found very inspiring. I also found the character of Byomkesh very fascinating with his strengths, weaknesses and his complex personality. Director Dibakar Banerjee was right when he felt that I would be able to

interpret and play the character, since some of my character traits were similar to that of Byomkesh. For instance, Byomkesh is an introvert and a loner, much like me. All the same he is unable to figure out why people don’t talk to him. He is an honest and straight forward person too. He is also someone who is intelligent and much more matured as compared to his age. Have you ever spied on anyone in life? I think we are all spies in our respective lives. For instance, I would also like to know what exactly is going on in your mind while you are talking to me. I may also like to influence others to think of me in a certain way. I am very possessive about the close people in my life. So consciously and unconsciously I try to find out about my loved ones. How different is Byomkesh Bakshi from some of the famous detectives we have witnessed in the past? One of the best known detectives that I know of was Sherlock Homes and I was a great fan of his. In our country, we had several detective series which got a great following from Karamchand to Raja Aur Rancho and others. But Byomkesh Bakshy is different from any of the other detectives witnessed on screen. Unlike Sherlock Holmes, he is unaware aware of his potential and talent. He decides to pursue a case to come out of his boredom as he has just passed out of college and does not find anything inspiring. It is also his first case and a very complex one set in Kolkata in the 40s. This film is the journey of an intelligent immature boy to a matured detective. You have been touted as the next generation bankable actor, what would you like to say about this? It feels great. I quit my engineering in order to take up acting. When I started my journey as an actor, I never thought that I would come this far as an actor. Working with big production house like Yash Raj Films is a huge honour for me. When I go out on the roads people recognise me today. My spending power has also increased considerably. But it is my love for my work that I enjoy above everything. With your career going places, do you find it difficult to sustain your relationship with your girl friend Ankita Lokhande? It is indeed difficult. it doesn’t matter. We have both found the common factor that keeps up together. Your next film is a biopic on India’s cricketing legend, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Have you already started preparing for the role? As you can see, I have already grown my hair. I am very excited to be a part of this film. Post your performance in PK and now NH10, you seem to be in the news for all the right reasons. What made you take up a hard-hitting film like NH10 for your production debut? NH10 belongs to the thriller genre and I felt it was the best way to start off as a producer. The film is about a road trip that goes wrong. It’s a thriller and made on a shoe-string budget. When I was first approached with the story-idea of the film, I found it very viable. I found the script very engrossing too. I knew that this was the kind of film I would be comfortable handling both as a producer and as an actor.
Are you looking forward to producing content driven films over formula films? When I decided to venture into production, I did not do so with the idea of making formula films. I always wanted to make content-driven films with young writers and directors. There are a number of interesting stories waiting to be told.
you keep learning new things every day. I also keep my crew members inspired all the time. During the shooting of NH10, I ensured that my team worked in a happy environment. We also played cricket and organized running races. I think a good environment makes a difference. I like to see the people around me happy.
How much of a hands-on producer are you? I would say completely but I am more of a creative producer. I am not very wellconversant with trade matters so I allow my brother, Karnesh to handle that part. Production is a collaborative effort and
So do you play cricket? I was not included in any cricket team neither as a bowler nor as a batsman. I just can’t hold the bat so people never took the initiative of including me in their cricket teams.

Tell us about your role in your next film, Bombay Velvet. The role in Bombay Velvet is completely different from any of the roles I have attempted earlier. Since it’s a period film, the body language and the mannerisms are different and I had to really work hard to get into the skin of my character. How was the experience working with Ranbir Kapoor in the film? It was wonderful. I shared a great working relationship and personal equation with Ranbir during the making of the film. We get along really well and we have been friends for a long time. I also have a lot of respect for him for the kind of films he does. How different was the experience working with Rajkumar Hirani in PK and Anurag Kashyap in Bombay Velvet? Both Anurag Kashyap and Raju Hirani are great directors in their own right but their sensibilities are different. You can gauge the difference when you see their films. Rajkumar-sir’s characters are very interesting; they impact your mind even if the character has a presence of merely five minutes. That’s because Rajkumar-sir goes into great detailing for the framing of every character in his films. On the other hand, Anurag-sir makes it a point to define relationships in his films. The relationships are layered and convoluted and at times take you by surprise. For an actor, it is very important to get the feel of the character while living up to the expectations of the director. That’s the challenge. You seem to have found your place in the big league with Karan Johar signing you for his next film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil-which once again stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead? It is all a matter of meeting the right people and getting to know them. I worked with Karan and Ranbir in Bombay Velvet, and we developed a certain rapport during the making of the film. I guess Karan decided to carry forward the same rapport when he decided to cast us for his next directorial venture. I am very happy that I will be working with these people again. I am also excited about the fact that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a part of the film. I must confess it is a totally different film. How excited are you about working with Karan Johar as a director? I am definitely excited but we are yet to start shooting for the film. I grew up watching all of Karan Johar’s films especially Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which I watched a number of times. I had never imagined at that time that I would work with him some day. Karan took me by surprise with his great acting skills when I worked with him in Bombay Velvet. Are you now looking at roles that challenge you as an actor? I am keen on doing versatile roles which allow me to experiment with my acting skills and also give me satisfaction. The character I played in PK came to me quite naturally since it was also close to my persona. I understood the character well hence it perfectly got set in my mind. On the other hand, I had to cultivate a different mindset for the role in Bombay Velvet. It is also a challenge to work with different directors. After having worked with both Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan, are you now looking forward to working with Salman Khan in the future? I never think on those lines when it comes to signing a role. I want to do good films and great scripts. I have never

questioned my directors about my co-stars. Fortunately I have had the experience of working with great co-stars so far. If I get an exciting script with Salman, I would definitely love to work with him. I have never interacted with him so far. I am told that he’s not the friendly kind and is very reticent. I met him when he was shooting for Ek Tha Tiger and wished him all the best for his film but he just said ‘Thank you!’ Who are your friends in the industry now? I consider Ranbir a good friend, besides Karan and also Katrina. I haven’t been able to keep in touch with most friends since I am not a cell-phone addict- I don’t spend a lot of time messaging too. I like meeting people but I don’t happen to meet them every day. I do have friends outside the industry. Are you satisfied about your journey in films so far? I am completely happy in my space. I always did what I wanted to do, irrespective of how well the decision worked for me. I never wanted to fall into any mould. I am glad that I have entered a stage in my career when I can afford to me choosy. Aren’t you looking forward to being in the number one race? I am definitely not a contender in the numbers game. I don’t want to be in that league either; it gives me no pleasure at all. I want to be known as someone who has done good films. I want people to have that kind of faith in me that every film I do has to be a good film. I can go wrong at times but I have never gone wrong about my intentions. Now that you have turned producer, there is talk that you are planning to settle down in life and get married soon. How far is it true? I have no such ideas. Like I said earlier, I turned producer because I had a great script. I am enjoying this phase now so
there is no question of quitting acting. I have been fairly open about my professional and personal life. As for settling down, I am not aware from where these rumours have originated. Right now I am not even getting engaged. I have a long career ahead. I guess such stories start surfacing when people do not have anything much to write. Tucked away in Ireland’s southwest corner, near the equally beautiful but maybe more famous Ring of Kerry, is the Dingle Peninsula. Though small and out of the way, this rocky peninsula offers a look at some of the best natural and cultural treasures in Ireland, largely unspoiled by big cities and tourist crowds. Dingle Town The peninsula gets its English name from its largest village. Dingle town and the western half of the peninsula are technically in a Gaeltacht area, an Irish cultural preserve established to keep alive the Irish language and traditional way of life. It’s referred to locally by its Irish name, An Daingean. The village is known throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe as a haven for great traditional Irish music. Many of the village pubs offer live music sessions every night of the year, some featuring well-known Irish music stars. Prices of food and drink are cheaper in the village than in Ireland’s larger cities, so even budget travelers can find a warm seat by the fire and enjoy a pint and some fine music, which usually kicks off at about 9:30 p.m. Dingle Bay is also famous for a local animal celebrity, a bottlenose dolphin
named Fungie. In the mid-1980s, for reasons unknown, this lone dolphin made residence in the sheltered bay, and has been entertaining tourists ever since. Every year, a fleet of local boats takes thousands of visitors into the harbor for a chance to see this famous, friendly dolphin. For a free look at Fungie and the stunning scenery on the Dingle and Ring of Kerry coasts, visitors with good walking shoes can head east on a well-maintained coastal trail all the way to the mouth of the bay, where the dolphin can be seen entertaining the many Fungie-watching boats. From the lighthouse, the trail continues along a steep cliff, offering beautiful views of Dingle town and Macgillicuddy’s Reeks, the highest mountains in Ireland, on the Iveragh Peninsula, better known as the Ring of Kerry. The Slea Head Drive From Dingle town, most visitors embark on an unforgettable car or bicycle trip around the well-marked Slea Head Drive. This circular coastal route combines ancient humanmade monuments with breathtaking natural beauty for an unforgettable experience. At Slea Head, the southwestern corner of the peninsula, drivers can stop to see the distant Skellig Islands, home of an ancient
monastic settlement, and the nearby Blasket Islands, home to a small population of Irishspeaking fishers and farmers until a forced evacuation in the 1950s. Farther along, the route passes through the small village of Dunquin (Dún Chaoin in Irish), the westernmost settlement in Europe, as it reaches the northwest corner of the peninsula and more scenic clifftop and island views. As the road loops back to Dingle town, visitors can see the very well-preserved Gallarus Oratory. This mysterious building is believed to be an early Christian church, but little is known as to its exact date or use. The stones of the oratory are stacked perfectly to create a durable and waterproof structure without need of mortar. The entire Slea Head Loop takes half a day by car, a full day if done by bicycle. After a long day out seeing some of Ireland’s most beautiful coastline and early Celtic and Christian heritage, weary travelers are always ready for ceol agus craic, music and good times, in one of Dingle town’s fine traditional pubs. The serial tells the story of a young girl, Lakshmi (Nikita Dutta) who aspires to make a career in Bollywood and become a big star like Ayesha (Shraddha Arya). In her search of her career, Lakshmi does everything under the sun to go to Mumbai, the city of dreams. She prays, steals money and even goes to the fortune-teller to realize her ambition. Eventually, she comes across a guy from a well-known Bollywood family, who is initially amused and ridicules her. However, he eventually falls in love with her.
Parwazz, meaning to take flight, is the first Indian drama to be shot entirely in the U.A.E. The period fiction drama, set in the 90s tells the story of two young men, Adarsh from India and Sikandar from Pakistan, who intersect in Dubai when they go there in search of their dream jobs. However, fate plays a cruel hand when they both discover that they have been duped by their employment agency back home. Their story of struggle, grit and friendship plays out over a span of 20 years from their humble beginnings when they take up odd jobs for survival to their success and the trials and tribulations along the way. The riveting story of Sikander and Adarsh spanning over two decades, is inspiring and at the same time realistic.

The show revolves around Ram, a doting husband whose life revolves around his wife, Anandita (played by Gurdeep Kohli). Ram’s wife is terminally ill and suffering from cancer but he is unable to come to terms with the fact that she barely has a few days to live. While his wife has come to accept the inevitable, the grief-stricken Ram fears the prospect of living alone and pleads desperately with God to save his wife. His raves, rants and breaks down before God, determined to find a way out of his ordeal. The serial has its heartrending moments of emotions. It remains to be seen whether Ram Kapoor goes one step further with his act in the show after the overwhelming response he got for his last show. When it comes to motherhood, are you a very organized mom? I think I am a bit too fidgety about organizing things. I plan everything to the minutest detail. Sometime I do feel exhausted but I have no complaints. I guess motherhood is the most rewarding phase in my life. I just realized that my mother did all these things for me and I never thanked her enough. Do you seek the advice and help of your mother and mother-in-law? Both my mom and mom-in-law are always there when it comes to my child. I do listen to them but both give me my space as a mother so I can take decisions for my son. My mother feels that I can be the best judge when it comes to my son. Likewise my momin-law feels that no mother is a bad mother, when it comes to handling her son. I do listen to my instincts too. How is Riteish as a father? He is a great father. He was very excited about the prospect of becoming a father since the time I was pregnant. While it is a great feeling to become a parent, I and Riteish are both aware that parenting comes with a responsibility too. Riteish is a very adorable husband and father too. He has done everything from nappy changing to giving a bath to Riaan. I am thankful that I have a husband who takes equal responsibility and does not feel that it is entirely my duty. He is also great at handling children. It’s unfair to fathers at time that they get so little time to spend with their babies. In the case of Riteish, he was busy shooting during my entire pregnancy but he has been there with me all along from the day I became a mother. How much are you missing the limelight? I would love to get back to work but I am not missing anything. I wanted to give some
time to my marriage and now to my son but I guess I will be ready a few months down the line.

What is the biggest change you have discovered post marriage and motherhood? People ask me about it but I don’t know exactly how I have changed. I believe one should not change his or her individuality irrespective of marriage and motherhood. How you take the pressure of looking good all the time? I guess during the whole phase of pregnancy you can afford to look fat as much as you can and no one is going to complain about it.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems to have finally arrived, ready to give the other actors a run for their money. It took this talented actor 11 years to break free of the struggler’s tag. Nawaz who comes from a small village in Uttar Pradesh started his acting career with a walk-on part in E Niwas’ Shool. He made critics sit up with his hardhitting cameo in Kabir Khan’s New York. That was followed by a mind-blowing performance in Gangs Of Wasseypur. More recently, he won rave reviews for his act in Badlapur. In a free-wheeling interview with Subhash K Jha, Nawaz talks about his journey in films and more.

When you see your career graph go from zero to hero in Gangs Of Wasseypur to antihero in Badlapur, what are your thoughts? Mujhe yakeen nahin hota! Once during the shooting of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman-bhai and I got talking. He asked me if I found it hard to believe that I had become a star. He confessed that he too found it hard to believe that he was a star. He also said that when people gawked at him he still felt they were looking at someone behind him. I get the same feeling at times. Do you feel elated with all the appreciation? I guess all my prayers and hard work have paid off. Eighteen years ago I used to stand in front of the mirror and try out acting. Today I get paid to do the same and I have thousands watching me while I try to act. I have so many friends from my theatre days, who are still trying to make a mark. Actors who once inspired me are now languishing in some corner of Lucknow. Can you name a few such actors who inspired you in your early days? There was Vijay Shukla, whom I would watch on stage and get immensely inspired. I was also a great fan of Manoj Bajpai. He was absolutely magical on stage. I also adored Ashish Vidyarthi once upon a time. I don’t know what happened to him later, after he shifted to the south. I had seen his early plays and he was way ahead of his times. He gave a modern interpretation to his characters. I was very inspired by all these actors. Do you consider yourself lucky in comparison to these actors? I guess some of these actors had to succumb to the formula that is indispensable to commercial cinema. I came later and I was lucky to get the right break when Hindi cinema went through a profound change. A dark film like Badlapur recently got a proper commercial release.
How did you manage to make the killer’s character in Badlapur so empathetic? Every time I did a scene my director Sriram Raghavan reminded me that my character was a killer by chance. It was not easy playing this character because he didn’t demonstrate his emotions. The change in him was happening in such a way that he couldn’t decipher it. Since he was not very intellectually developed, he couldn’t even articulate those changes within him. I’ve met many people in my life who have gone through tremendous trauma but they get involved with trivial pursuits in their present times.

The critics have hailed you as one of the finest actors ever? I will stop growing if I think about the praise and feel that I’ve achieved enough. I feel I’ve to keep working harder. The effort to find the correct roles has multiplied. I am afraid of losing it all again. Do you say ‘no’ to a lot of roles? Today I’ve reached a stage where I can afford to choose my roles and exercise the option of doing what suits me most. There was time when I did whatever came my way. You are now being approached for huge commercial films which you never thought of earlier? I make the choices that allow me to do the kind of cinema I believe in. The audiences expect me to do something different. I’d rather create heroes out of the ordinary people I meet every day than the formulistic hero who has no bearing on reality. The audiences are led to believe that heroes behave in a certain fashion and the rest are all character actors. In my next big commercial film Bajrangi Bhaijan, you will see me playing a very real and positive character. It is a very lovable character too. 26 April 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
Which are your other forthcoming films? I am doing Rahul Dholakia’s Raees with Shah Rukh Khan. I will be once again playing a positive character in the film. How is your rapport with Shah Rukh? I haven’t met him yet. We may do script readings together before shooting. Has your remuneration increased dramatically? Has your lifestyle changed in recent times? I don’t have to ask for more money. Producers stopped paying me a pittance long ago. Nobody pays you what you ask for. They give you what they think you deserve. Apart from that, if I like a character, I’ll still do a film for a pittance. Recently I signed a film for Rs 1 crore in the morning and another film for Rs 1 lakh in the evening. My lifestyle is the same. I still live in a rented home in Mumbai but I am hoping to buy a house soon. How do you deal with the attention? I can’t deal with it. Every time I get attention, I feel like running away. When Badlapur was previewed, I fled the theatre before the film was over. Of course I do want to be recognized for my work but I don’t know
how to respond to compliments. I run and hide in my small home. How does your wife cope with your success? She is far removed from the film industry. We don’t discuss films at home. What are your ambitions as an actor? I want to continue finding characters that inspire and challenge me. I really enjoy undertaking a journey with every character. I don’t want to get carried away by all the praise. I’ll continue to work hard. Is there a role that you are really craving to play? I would say it is Dilip Kumar’s Prince Salim in Mughal-e-Azam. I loved that character and performance. I also loved Dilip-saab’s attitude and bearing. Given an opportunity, I am confident that I can pull it off in my own way.

The actress talks about the documentary and how it will tell some hitherto unknown facts about her life in a conversation with Subhash K Jha. When former adult star, Sunny Leone made her Bollywood debut with Jism 2, her sizzling sex-appeal caught the fascination of the audiences. The actor later decided to postpone the film indefinitely also because his budgets had gone haywire in the intervening period. I think the television industry has progressed considerably in terms of its content over a period of time. Ten years back, a majority of shows were restricted to the saas-bahu genre, while some other shows revolved around courtroom dramas. If a particular show had a wedding in the storyline, several episodes were dedicated to wedding sequences and the grandeur. At one stage, there was also an overdose of reality shows. The shows looked the same, only the faces and the actors looked different. The makers believed in playing safe and portraying what was acceptable to the viewers. Today the industry is richer in terms of its concepts and ideas. The audience is ready for change today and the makers have no qualms experimenting with subjects. You are one of the longest-running actors on the television scene? How did you manage to survive for so long? I have always given my best to every role from the day I entered the industry. People who have worked with me know I am a very professional actor. I have never thrown tantrums or created problems on the sets. I am very positive in my approach towards work. I guess it is my professionalism that has helped me to sustain this long. People know that I am a no-nonsense guy, who is honest and dedicated to work. This also explains why the media has never written anything bad about me. You are also known as the replacement king in the television industry what with the many actors you have replaced in the past. What is your take on this? I guess I acquired this reputation with the many actors I replaced in various shows. It was a big challenge for me at times. When I joined the cast of Pavitra Rishta and replaced Sushant Singh Rajput (Manav), I approached the character with my own perception and mindset. I believe that you can create your own niche only when you have a fresh approach in such a situation. Probably that is the reason viewers have always accepted me whenever I have replaced another actor. What made you sign a show like Ganga on a newly launched channel? When Sphere Origin gave me the narration for this particular show, I was fascinated by its story. This particular production house is known for good concepts and we
were planning to come together earlier too but I could not work out my dates at that time. Fortunately, this fell in place this time and we got ahead with the show. I am enjoying playing the character of Niranjan Chaturvedi in Ganga. He is a Pandit and a lawyer with a modern approach and has no qualms extending his support for the child widow, Ganga. The character has many shades-he is a man with few words who talks to the point. You and your wife Gauri are the most loveable pair on and off screen but the two of you have not worked in too many serials together. Why? Our fans love to see both of us on screen. The love of fans is something which is a constant factor for last many years but it all depends on the makers who want to cast us together. Currently I and Gauri are having a great time working together in Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi but our fans want us to share more screen space, which is not happening. It is entirely the director’s initiative about how he wants to portray us. How would you describe your journey with Gauri so far? The two of us have shared 11 years of happiness. Our two kids are our bundle of joy. Even today, I give Gauri a red rose every day, to assure her that my love has not changed over the years. We are blessed and enjoying our parenthood. Our life currently revolves around our two kids. What are your future plans for your career? My focus is do good roles. Whether it is films or television, I want to take up roles
that will be remembered in the future. The problem with films is that you have to lock several dates for the projects and sacrifice other projects in the bargain. I can give my dates to a good character and a good film but I will never quit television for the sake of films. I have a high regard for actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rajkumar Rao, who give a different dimension to the characters they play on screen. When I did the film Anwar, director Manish Jha asked me not to perform like a television actor. I think one of my strengths as an actor is that I don’t go overboard with my acting. You have been an Ekta Kapoor loyalist and have been a common face in Balaji soaps. Why do you think Ekta has not cast you in her films? I did work with Ekta Kapoor in a film called Krishna Cottage, but I never got an opportunity to work with her thereafter. It seems just the other day when Aamir Khan took the box-office by storm with his debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Two and a half decades later, the actor continues to cast his spell at the box-office as an actor, producer and director. His chocolate boy looks havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed much nor has his zest for life. Recently the actor turned 50 on March 14 and also completed 25 years in the industry. He chose the occasion to invite the media for an interaction. The forthright actor articulated his views on what age meant to him, his decision to turn vegetarian, his next film Dangal and why he was content with his career.

How does it feel to be a 50-year old? I feel age is just a number. Mentally, I am still very young. I remember my age only when I have to do something that can physically challenge me. We all are young at heart. Do you look forward to your birthday every year? I am basically a shy person when it comes to celebrating my birthday. For me every day is a special day, I believe that we should value each day for our near and dear ones. Besides, birthdays were never a grand affair. I remember during my childhood my birthday celebrations were always postponed as March was supposed to be the examination month. I once got a kite as a birthday present but I was excited about it as flying kites was my favourite hobby. You are also the first Khan who turned 50..... (Smiles) In a way that is right. Among the three of us- me, Salman and Shah Rukh, I am the first one to turn 50 though we are all born in 1965. I think all of us are not more than 18 years old mentally. I guess we will turn 25 a few years down the line! You have gained 22 kilos for your next film, Dangal. Tell us something about it. Dangal has a fantastic story-line and I am very excited to be a part of this project. The film tells the story of a father and his two daughters. I am preparing myself for
the role and have put on 22 kilos of weight in order to get the look and the feel of the character. I am also learning wrestling and training in the Haryanvi language. The film was supposed to start in April but now it will go on the floor in September. I am ready with the look and have enjoyed the phase. It must have been tough for you to put on all the weight and undergo the physical transformation? It has been quite challenging. When you play with your body and age it is not an easy job. But it is an actorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job to get into the skin of his character. It is entirely an actorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responsibility about how he plans to approach a character if he is asked to look like an 18-year old young boy or a 60-years old man. Right now I am gorging on everything that I can lay my hands on except for the fact that I have turned vegetarian and am following a vegan diet. Sometime back my wife, Kiran showed me a video on you tube which showed how good eating habits and lifestyle changes, can make a big difference in your health. I am also not eating any dairy products so I am completely off milk and its by-products. Sometimes when I look at myself in the mirror I feel weird, but as an actor I feel I have reached that point where I wanted to reach. How do you look back on your career? I consider myself fortunate that I found the best of directors and writers in my journey
in the industry. It was because of them and their convictions that I managed to reach where I am today. There were times in the initial period when I was a failure and committed mistakes but that learning period taught me to make the right choices in life. According to me, failure is the stepping stone to success. I have never taken decisions in my life on the basis of logic; I have always followed my heart and I am quite happy about it. Kumar Sanu's comeback
With the number ‘Dard Karara’ continuing to rise on the music charts, 90’s singing sensation, Kumar Sanu is back to rule the hearts of music lovers. The prolific singer, whose voice was often compared to legendary singer, Kishore Kumar, had vanished into oblivion for the past seven years with the exception of the number ‘Chhamak Chhalo Chhail Chabeli’ from Rowdy Rathore, two years back.
Singing sensation, Kumar Sanu, who left an indelible mark on the minds of musiclovers in the 90s is back with a vengeance. After the popularity of his two songs in Dum Lagake Haisha, Sanu has been receiving compliments from his old fans and music composers, who are glad to hear his melodious voice again. “The success of this song has proved that audiences are hungry for melody and when it is served they accept it whole heartedly,” Sanu recently revealed. It all began for Sanu when his favourite music composer, Anu Malik, with whom he had given several hits in the past like ‘Baazigar O Bazigar’, ‘Ye Kaali Kaali Aankhen’, ‘Chori Chori Jab Nazrein Mili’, ‘Chura Ke Dil Mera’, approached him to lend his voice for two important numbers in Dum Lagake Haisha. The offer to sing came with another promise from the Yashraj banner that he would play a pivotal role in the story of the film since the protagonist (played by Ayushmann Khurrana) was also a die-hard Kumar Sanu fan, “When I learnt that I would be singing for a Yashraj Film and also appearing in the movie as Kumar Sanu, it was music to the ears. I was also excited about the prospect of working with Anu Malik once again. We have shared a great equation in the past and I knew it would be a great experience this time too,” Sanu recalled. Sanu had his own apprehensions about living up to expectations but once he started singing, he was reminded about some of the best melodies he had delivered in his career, “I was a little anxious initially because it was a huge responsibility and
the makers wanted us to give our level best but during the recording, we soon realized that the melody which was missing from the scene all this time was back. Besides, lyricist Varun Grover had done an excellent job with the lines.” It may be recalled that Sanu rose to phenomenal popularity in the 90s at a time when the music scene was dominated by composers like Anu Malik, Nadeem Shravan and Jatin Lalit and singers like Abhijeet, Sadhna Sargam, and Alka Yagnik. The singer distanced himself from the music world when the younger breed of singers like Sonu Nigam made their foray on the scene and stars began to look for fresh voices. Sanu however maintained that he decided to cut down on work because he was not very happy with the kind of songs and lyrics that began to be made, “I was offered several songs but I refused to sing because I was wary of the double-meaning and filthy lyrics. Also, I was not open to the idea of the same song being offered to several singers. I found it humiliating.” While Sanu is definitely encouraged by the recent feedback, he admitted that he was in no hurry to sign films, “I am currently busy with several stage performances and live shows. Also, I have 50 more films in the near future in 24 regional languages. I definitely believe in working with those people who respect and value my voice,” the singer quipped.

bags three-film deal with Yashraj banner Bhumi Pednekar is on a high after the success of her debut film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The actress, who had put on almost 12 kilos to get into the skin of the character, has now lost oodles of weight to regain her hour-glass figure. More excitingly, Bhoomi has been confirmed for a three-film deal by the reputed Yashraj banner. Debut-making actress, Bhumi Pednekar has become a hot bet among the list of the newest actress in tinsel town, after the success of her debut-making film, Dum Lagake Haisha. Unlike other new actresses who are seen at their glamorous best in their debut films, Bhumi’s debut showcased her as the overweight newly- wedded traditional housewife hailing from a small town in North-India, who is despised by her husband for being obese but eventually finds love and acceptance. The actress has now lost 15 kilos of weight and is on her way to do two more films with the YRF banner. “I had put on 12 kilos for the role as I had to look really plump and fat. I gorged on pizzas, paneer and every possible fattening food from various outlets for a few months. I was aware that they were bad for health but then it worked for the role,” Bhumi chuckles, adding that she has now cut down on all the fatty food and switched over to home-cooked food. Few are aware that Bhumi was a casting director at the famed production house of Yashraj before she decided to step into films. “I was 18 when I took up the job of a casting director. I had no idea about casting or working as an assistant director. I simply wanted to act but I had never imagined that the break would come from such a big banner like YRF. It was a dream come true for me,” the actress reveals.
She had her initial hiccups when director Sharad Katariya rejected her because she was too much of a city-bred Mumbai girl, “He had his own reservations whether I would be able to pull of the act of a smalltown village girl from Haridwar. He had told me that I would have to return to my original job as a casting director if I got rejected in the screen test. My biggest challenge thereafter was that he shouldn’t regret signing me for the film as there were amazingly talented people around me,” she says. It was actress Seema Pahwa took her under her wings and trained her for the role. She also went to Hardiwar and mingled with the people there to get the feel of the character. The biggest problem was the traditional local dialect in the film, since had the tendency of communicating in English, “I would often get stuck in many words and end up using English words when I lost track. I finally managed to change my dialect after going to Haridwar,” she reveals. Bhumi also had her apprehensions about her first on-screen kiss with Ayushmann Khurrana “I was tensed about it but the director wanted to get it over and done with. It took me 10-12 takes but when I realized that it was more technical, I simply shot for it.” The debut-making actress was delighted when she got compliments for her performance from the likes of actors like
Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan, “They were very encouraging. When Vidya Balan called me and said that she loved the film, it was a spectacular moment for me. I told her that it meant a lot to me because I had a great regard for the kind of work she had done,” says Bhumi. The best compliment she received though was from her mother. “She saw the film and said that she was very proud of my matured performance in the film.” Bhumi insists that she owes her new-found success and career in films to her producer and mentor, Aditya Chopra, “He was the first one who suggested my name for the role. I have a great personal equation with him. He is my guru and guide for me.” The debutante is now hoping to explore her acting career further, “Right now I am not aware of my limitations as an actress. I will know about them only after I do a couple of roles. I have just started discovering the actor in me,” she quips.

Actor Karan Singh Grover has never skipped his workout even for a single day in the recent past, especially after he made his Bollywood debut with Alone. The actor, who adheres to a strict exercise regimen and controlled diet, believes that a great physique cannot be achieved without discipline and hard work. The actor has been sporting six pack abs since the age of 23 and has managed to maintain it ever since. The secret of his fitness Karan insists that the secret behind his great looking body is his consistent diet and work outs, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I religiously work out for two hours every day and make sure that I never miss it. I also maintain a complete chart of my food intake throughout the day, including my protein, carbohydrates and sugar.â&#x20AC;?

Karan insists that he is very particular about the kind of food that goes into my body. “There are times when I am tempted to gorge on a vada-pav by the roadside but fast food is a strict no for me. I am aware that it is not good both for my health and my physique. I have conditioned my brain accordingly. Your levels of fitness are also influenced by the right choice of diet,” he avers. The actor however admits that he does not starve his taste buds completely. He does relish his favourite delicacies once in a while but makes up for it with an additional exercise session, “I give myself a break on weekends when I can have a brownie or an ice cream but I work out more on the next day,” he says. His inspiration While Karan is a fitness freak to the core, he admits that he is inspired by his Alone costar, Bipasha Basu and her levels of fitness. “I was always regular about my workouts and diet but after I met Bipasha, I realized how fitness can change your attitude towards life. She too feels that exercise not only tones the body but works on your mental level too. Like me, Bipasha makes it a point to go to the gym even after a tiring day. I admire this quality about her,” he smiles. His diet Karan cannot do without chicken and fish in his diet so he makes sure that he includes them in his daily meal. He breaks his food intake into six small meals and eats something every two hours. He starts his day with a heavy breakfast which consists of a glass of juice, a bowl of oats and ten egg whites. “I believe that breakfast should be the heaviest meal of the day. It packs all the energy for the day,” he says.
His midday meal consists of a glass of protein shake followed by a bowl of fruits. Lunch consists of chicken, dal, rotis and lots of vegetables, besides brown rice and pulses. In the afternoon around 4 p.m., he has a protein shake and a bowl of fruits. He wraps his dinner early with fish, chicken or vegetables. The actor avoids consuming carbohydrates after sunset. His exercise routine Since he works out for two hours every day, the actor makes it a point to work on one group of muscles at a time. He begins with an hour of stretching followed by his workouts. “I alternate my exercises working on my back muscles one day, chest muscles the next day and the shoulder muscles and arms and legs the following days. I also make sure to relax properly after exercising. My work outs includes 40 percent of cardio and 60 percent of weights,” Karan reveals. On the days he is busy shooting and doesn’t get time to hit the gym, the actor switches over to outdoor activities. “I go out swimming or jogging for an hour. I also do B-boying which helps my body,” he adds.
His dos and don’ts for workouts Karan says that health and fitness are co-related, “If you need to be healthy you need to be fit. A proper exercise, balanced meal and good sleep are the vital ingredients to a healthy and fit body,” he insists. The actor also believes that one should work out only under the guidance of a qualified fitness instructor, “That way you understand your body and know what workout suits your body best,” he says. The actor has a word of advice for those who adhere to a regular exercise regimen, “It is important that monotony does not set in. The best way to keep your interest alive is to bring variations in your workouts every two months. It is also important to take your body by surprise lest you begin to take the workouts for granted,” he says. Lastly Karan feels that a healthy mind and body cannot be achieved without a positive approach to life, “It is important to think positively and keep smiling all the time. That way you can work wonders with your health and body,” he quips.

The theme and the characters in the film have been inspired from famed Bengali writer, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s novel, Satyanweshi. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles and is scheduled for release on 10th April, 2015.
MR. X Produced by Vishesh Films and directed by Vikram Bhatt, Mr. X is a 3D thriller starring Emraan Hashmi and Amyra Dastur, in the lead roles. The film which is said to be a modern-day version of the super-hit Anil Kapoor –Sridevi starrer, Mr India, tells the story of a young man, Raghuram, who is forced to become a vigilante and gets entangled into a treacherous scheme. He is left to die in a chemical factory by people who blow it up with the intention to kill him. However, the chemicals in the factory cause a reaction that turns him invisible and this unique quality allows him to take revenge from his killers. Serial-kisser Emraan Hashmi who has romanced several young girls on screen, will be seen in a shocking and scary avatar on screen. Emraan’s look in the film is likely to take his fans by surprise. Deepika Padukone slogs it out to live up to her schedules With three back-to-back films scheduled for release from Piku to Bajirao Mastani and Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha, Deepika Padukone is working round-the-clock to honour her commitments. According to sources, the actress has been putting over 18 hours of work every day, to make sure that she finishes her work on schedule. The actress who has been multi-tasking for her three films is said to have gone without proper sleep for two consecutive days. Reportedly, Deepika spent a whole day at a photo-shoot after which she proceeded for the dubbing of her forthcoming film, Piku. After dubbing through the night, the actress then headed straight for the sets of Bajirao Mastani, the next morning. According to sources, the most commendable quality about her was the fact that she was at her courteous best throughout the day. However her Bajirao director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali got concerned after he learnt of her hectic schedule. According to reports, John curtly refused to do any kissing scenes with his co-star Shruti Haasan in an under-production film, Welcome Back. He also clarified to his director, Anees Bazmi, that he was not open to the idea of doing steamy scenes in the film. Bazmi later attributed John’s reluctance to the fact that it was a fresh pairing and actors took time to establish a comfort level with new co-stars. However, it is a well-known fact that John was seen in a lip-lock in his last box-office outing, Madras Cafe, with newcomer Rashi Khanna, when they were paired for the first time on screen. Meanwhile sources reveal that John has sobered into a family man after his marriage to banker Priya Runchal last year and is wary of locking lips with any of his co-stars. VermicelliNut-Idli Vermicelli nut idli is the perfect choice for those days when you feel like having idli, but have no batter, or when you wish to have a slightly spicy idli. Made of vermicelli and semolina, tempered graciously with broken cashews, this can be had as a starter or as a full meal. Preparation Time: 15 mins Fermenting Time: 30 min. Cooking Time: 30 mins Makes 24 idlis INGREDIENTS
METHOD
1 cup broken vermicelli (sevaiyan) 1/2 cup semolina (rava)
1. Heat 1½ tbsp of oil in a broad non-stick pan, add the semolina and roast on a medium flame for 3 minutes or till the semolina is light pink in colour, while stirring continuously.
1 cup curds (dahi)
2. Remove from the flame and keep aside in a deep bowl.
2 tsp fruit salt
3. Heat the remaining 1½ tbsp of oil in the same pan, add the vermicelli and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.
3 tbsp oil salt to taste
4. Remove from the flame and add it to the semolina , also add the curds, salt and 1½ cups of water and mix well. Cover and keep aside for 30 minutes.

5. To prepare the tempering, heat the oil in a small non-stick pan, add the cashewnuts, urad dal, mustard seeds, green chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
1 tbsp broken cashewnuts (kaju)
6. Add the tempering to the batter and mix well.
2 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
7. Just before steaming, add the fruit salt and mix gently.
FOR THE TEMPERING
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson) 1 tbsp finely chopped green chillies
8. Pour a little batter into each of the greased idli moulds and steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till the idlis are cooked.
3 to 4 curry leaves (kadi patta)
9. Cool slightly and demould.
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to make 1 more batch.

Quick-RiceDosa As this dosa requires no soaking or fermenting, it can be prepared in a jiffy when you are in need of a quick meal. The addition of cooked rice makes the dosas soft despite not soaking the raw rice. Quick rice dosa should be had immediately with nice sambhar and chutney.
Preparation Time: 10 mins Cooking Time: 20 mins Makes 8 dosas INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup raw rice (chawal) , washed 1/4 cup grated coconut 1/4 cup cooked rice salt to taste butter for cooking
METHOD
FOR SERVING sambhar coconut chutney
4. Pour a ladleful of the batter on it and spread it in a circular motion to make a 125 mm. (5”) diameter circle.
1. Combine the raw rice, coconut, cooked rice and ½ cup of water in a mixer and blend till smooth. 2. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add the salt and 5 tbsp of water and mix well. Cover and keep it aside for 10 minutes. 3. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) sprinkle a little water on the tava (griddle) and wipe it off gently using a muslin cloth.
5. Smear a little butter over it and along the edges and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2minutes. Take care to see that the dosa does not become crisp as this is a soft dosa. 6. Fold over to make a semi-circle. 7. Repeat with the remaining batter to make 7 more dosas. 8. Serve immediately with sambhar and coconut chutney.

Now Hrithik in fairness commercial After the debate in the recent past over stars endorsing skinlightening products, a majority of stars have been cautious about featuring in campaigns promoting fairness lotions in order to avoid colour discrimination. However superstar Hrithik Roshan recently went ahead and signed a commercial that promotes instant fairness face wash for men. Incidentally, the same brand was earlier endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan, who was criticized for his decision to feature in the commercial.

The actor who is gearing up for his next release, Bajirao Mastani, continued with his admiration for the perfectionist Khan, “He has been a game changer of content. He is the poster boy for blurring the lines between alternate and commercial films. His bravery blends these two worlds. All his choices Talaash, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, they were all integrated. They mix the best of both worlds. He is a revolution,” he said. When Sunny Leone aped south superstar Rajnikanth Almost every known Bollywood star is inspired by ThalaivaRajnikanth’s antics on screen and his unique style of dancing. But few are aware that actress Sunny Leone is also a great Rajnikanth fan and adores his signature steps. Sources reveal that the actress has watched most of the south superstar’s movies with sub-titles, the last being Kochadaiyaan. Recently the actress was excited when she got an opportunity to perform Rajni’s iconic step for a song, ‘Saiyaan Superstar’ in her soon to be released film, Ek Paheli Leela. According to a production source, it was choreographer Ahmed Khan, who taught her the difficult step and helped her to master it. Apparently, the actress had earlier mentioned to Ahmed Khan about how she was a great fan of Rajnikanth and his style of wearing shades. Ahmed who was choreographing a song took Sunny by surprise by incorporating the iconic Rajnikanth step in the song.

The actor is said to have been terribly upset when recent reports surfaced in several websites and newspapers suggesting that he and his wife, Mehr Jesia, were heading for a divorce. However, he seemed to be in an unforgiving mood from the series of Tweets directed at the media. The actor has now decided that he will not do any personal interviews in the future and discuss his life with the media.
