With Tanu Weds Manu Returns, I am hoping to reach out to the audiences His first two films Strangers and Thodi Life Thoda Magic did not do well at the box-office but it was Tanu Weds Manu with Kangana Ranaut and Madhavan in the lead that turned the tables for director Aanand L Rai. His next Raanjhanaa was a huge box office success. Now the director is back with the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu. He says that the subject of love and romance has always captured his imagination and is confident that it will take him places. In a chat, the director talks about his next film and his obsession with love, romance and relationships.
I think I am blessed with a basic understanding of relationships
There is a great anticipation surrounding the release of Tanu Weds Manu Returns since the prequel was a huge success at the box-office. Are you feeling pressurized by all the expectations? I try my best to stay away from pressures be it in my life or work. I enjoy my work and give it my level best. There’s a basic rule and I believe in it irrespective of how my films fair at the box-office. I merely allow my imagination to take shape. My responsibility is to direct a film. It is for the audiences to give their verdict. You seem to be obsessed with the concept of love and romance with all your films revolving around the subject of love.
I am the youngest in my family and I have experienced love at every stage in my life. Whether it is my family, friends, colleagues or relations, I have always been lucky in love. Also I think I am blessed with a basic understanding of relationships. I love to talk to people falling in love. All this is reflected in my films. What kind of expectations do you have from Tanu Weds Manu Returns? I am not too worried about the financial returns. I got a great feedback from the first installment of the film. My next film Raanjhanaa earned me a lot of respect. With Tanu Weds Manu Returns, I am hoping to reach out to the audiences. I have always www.visionasia.com.au | May 2015

As an actor Kangana is growing tremendously with each film gone by my heart in the films I have directed so far and I have been successful.
perfect for the role. At that moment I didn’t think of the box-office.
You are said to have brought the flavor of Punjab in the story. Do you find it exciting? If you look at Tanu Weds Manu and the story telling, the colour palette and the tone was very Punjabi though some of the scenes were shot in Delhi and Kanpur. I have a deep bond with Punjab and its culture, which is reflected in this film and the earlier prequel. I connect very well to the people whenever I visit Punjab. I enjoy being there.
How much has Kangana grown as an actor? She is a more confident person now and she is enjoying the whole process of acting. As an actor she is growing tremendously with each film. She has the passion to learn and is putting her heart and soul in everything she does. I think Kangana is in the best phase of her life right now. She has a great future ahead.
How did you manage to convince south superstar Madhavan to play a true blue Punjabi in the film? Madhavan plays a character called Manu Sharma who’s not a Punjabi but a Delhite. The essence of Punjabi lifestyle is very apparent in Delhi culture too and Madhavan has lived up to his role without any problems. He’s a controlled and expressive actor, who has the ability to emote beautifully on screen. When I was casting for Tanu Weds Manu I wanted someone whose silence speaks volumes and Madhavan seemed 8 May 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
Coming back to your films, don’t you want to experiment with different genres? I will always stick to relationships. I have another installment of a love story in mind which is still in the planning stages. It would be a love story but I don’t know how intense it will be. I think it is time I started experimenting in different genres but like I said my stories will always be based on love and relationships. What next? We are told that you have signed Dhanush for your next? Like Kangana and Madhavan, Dhanush is an
actor with whom I’d like to work with again and again. I had made up my mind about this the day I wrapped up Raanjhaana. Filmmaking is a small experience; making films with my actors is not a big thing but building a bond with them is what I look for. Dhanush will always be a part of my films. He knows I am busy and we plan to start working very soon. By: Aanand L Rai

My focus has always been to solidify the
Punjabi film industry
His Punjabi fans across the world go wild after his music and his mind-blowing performances. It has been almost two decades since Punjabi pop sensation, Harbhajan Mann, first entered the music scene. The singer with immense talent later went on to become an actor and producer and revolutionized Punjabi cinema. After doing more than seven films with diverse roles, Mann is now eagerly looking forward to his next film, GaddarThe Traitor, in which he will be seen in an altogether different role. The film is also said to be one of the first corporate films of the Punjabi industry. The iconic singer-actor talks about the film, why it is unique and how he hopes to take the Punjabi industry to a new chapter in the history of Indian cinema.
Gaddar-The Traitor is said to be the first Punjabi suspense-thriller of its kind. How did the film happen to you? Since Amitoje and I teamed up for Haani, we set out as a team with a vision to create a type of cinema that will go beyond entertainment; we wanted to tell stories that would leave an endearing impression on audiences because of subjects and stories we want to showcase. With that in mind, Gaddar appeared to be a film that was something special and one that had never been attempted in Punjabi cinema earlier. We are truly hopeful audiences will connect with. It is rumoured that you will be seen in a never-before-seen avatar in the film that is likely to take your fans by surprise. Tell
us about your look in the film. I am portraying the character of Jai, a man who is larger than life, someone who gets a thrill out of challenging all kinds of dangers. He is faced with several hardships and betrayals, but the way he handles them with his cavalier attitude is what makes the film interesting and exciting. The film is said to be one of the highest budgeted Punjabi films in recent times. How far is it true? Yes, the movie has an expensive budget due to the amount of action sequences and different locations that we have shot. We have shot the film in Punjab, Goa, Mumbai and Toronto, and I am very impressed with the production quality we have been able to attain.
This type of corporatization is very important for Punjabi cinema to move forward and grow www.visionasia.com.au | May 2015 11

I am always open to singing in Bollywood films, but the song has to be right and it should be presented in a way that is respectful and appropriate
Gaddar also marks the corporatisation of the Punjabi film industry. Do you see it opening an all new future for Punjabi cinema? Saga-Unisys and Grandson Films have been huge supporters of Gaddar since the beginning and they are a major reason as to why we were able to make the film the way we had envisioned. Furthermore, their marketing skills and stronghold in film distribution will be very important to give Gaddar the platform it needs to be released. This type of corporatization is very important for Punjabi cinema to move forward and grow, and I am glad we are on the right track in that respect with this film. Are you planning to revolutionise Punjabi cinema with Gaddar-The Traitor? It’s hard to define what revolutionising Punjabi cinema really is. I am not necessarily aligning myself with revolutionizing the whole industry and changing every dynamic, but when it comes to things like corporatization and experimenting with non-conventional story lines, I am glad that Gaddar is a film that can potentially open more doors for other filmmakers. Personally, I am at a place where I want audiences to see good, clean cinema with thought- provoking and tastefully done stories. I have set out to achieve that type of cinema with this film and that’s the focus for me right now. Will you also be singing all the songs in the film? How would you describe the music of the film? Yes, I will be singing the songs in the film, and the music perfectly matches the intensity of the film. There is one song especially that I have recorded with the very talented Dr. Zeus that stands out, which I think will be a huge sell-out with the audiences. 12 May 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
You are said to share a great equation with director Amitoje Mann, with whom you have worked earlier, both in music videos and films. Can you talk about the kind of rapport you share with him? Amitoje and I share a very similar perspective on films and the type of cinema we want to exhibit. I have a deep amount of respect for him and I am proud to call him a dear friend. He is not just someone who I make films with or work with professionally, he is one of my buddies and truly a great person to hang out with. How was your equation with Puneet Grewal, (Miss Australia Punjaban 2012), who plays the female lead in the film? Puneet is a great young actress who has
played the role of a budding journalist in the film. With this being her first film, and with her role being quite challenging, Puneet has done a wonderful job and she has a very bright future ahead in acting. You are said to be taking positive steps to make a difference to the Punjabi industry. What are your future plans for the industry? My approach towards music and film has been the same as it was at the time of its foundation over 23 years ago. I have been working since then. My goal is to always provide clean, soulful and truly genuine Punjabi music and films. I want to move forward with this in mind, and make more projects that embrace our beautiful language and culture.

There are reports that you are also set to release your brand new single, ‘Husn, The Kali’ alongside UK production duo Tigerstyle. What is it all about? Yes, I am releasing a single at the end of April produced by Tigerstyle titled ‘Husn, The Kali. This project had been in the works for multiple years, as Tigerstyle and I had always wanted to work together and I have been a big fan of their music. This song is a wonderful blend of the folk Kali type of singing style with modern instruments and sound, and my fans can look forward to this. It is also the first time I am singing with this type of sound. Punjabi culture and music have also had a profound influence on Hindi films and Bollywood in the past. Do you see yourself acting, singing and dancing in a full-fledged Bollywood film in the future? I have had numerous offers throughout my career to work in Bollywood, but my focus has always been to solidify the Punjabi film industry and concentrate on Punjabi music. I am always open to singing in Bollywood films, but the song has to be right and it should be presented in a way that is respectful and appropriate, not the fictionalized version we often see in Bollywood films. It was rumoured at one stage that you were planning a biopic on Bhagat Singh. What prevented you from going ahead?
There was a film in the works, and I had also done a photo shoot for it, but around the time production was about to begin, two other Bollywood films were also being produced on Bhagat Singh. The producers decided it was not viable for the film to be made, and I decided to focus instead on my efforts to revive the Punjabi film industry. That’s how Jee Aayan Nu. Who has been your inspiration in life? There are several things that have inspired me through life. My family, with the constant support from my wife and kids, inspire me to work hard and make them proud. My mentor, Shiromani KwisharKarnail Singh Paras Ramuwalia has been instrumental in shaping me as the person I am, and to this day I think of him when I choose my projects. You must work hard and work with sincerity towards the goals you want to achieve in order to accomplish any sort of success.

You will see me experiment with different types of films, and hear songs with all sorts of producers from around the world. I am very excited to enter a phase in my career where my fans can look forward to seeing such varied amount of projects. Is there any message you would like to give to your fans in Australia? Australia is a place that I love very dearly. The fans have been very supportive throughout my career, and it’s a place where my family and I love visiting every time I tour. I love meeting and spending time with fans, and the last time I was here I climbed the Sydney Bridge! His early days and his initiation into singing Harbhajan Mann was born on 30th December, 1965 in the village of Khemuana in Bathinda, Punjab. He aspired to become a singer from his early childhood days. Later he studied music from his first guru, Karnail Singh Paras Ramoowalia, who was known for singing a style called ‘Kaveeshri’ without the aid of any instruments. Mann started singing formally in 1980-81 by performing in local shows for the Asian community while in his school in Canada. He also formed a group with his brother, Gursewak Mann. His first break as a professional singer Even as he performed for local Asian groups in Canada, Mann’s talent was spotted by famed Punjabi music director, Charanjit Ahuja, who was touring Canada. He encouraged the talented youngster to sing and work on his voice. Mann got his first professional break in 1992 while in Canada with the release of ‘Chithiye Nee Chithiye’. The track became a huge success with audiences in Punjab. His decision to return to Punjab to explore music After the success of ‘Chithiye Nee Chithiye’, Mann realised that Canada had little scope for Punjabi music and decided to return to Punjab to explore the music scene. That was followed by other successful movies like Asa Nu Mann Watna Da, Dil Apna Punjabi, Mitti Wajaan Mardi and Mera Pind, My home. In 2009, Mann made his production debut with the movie, Jag Jeondeyan Mele, after which he made active efforts to bring Punjabi cinema to the forefront. In 2011, he took a break from acting when two of his films, Heer Ranjha and Yaara O Dildara, failed to perform at the box-office. However the Punjabi pop icon returned with a bang in 2013 with Haani. The film was a huge hit not just in India but also in Australia and Canada. Presently, Mann is eagerly looking forward to his next film, Gaddar - The Traitor, which will see him in an all new role. NUMEROSCOPE
Star birthdays and the year ahead Ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what the future holds in store for Karan Johar and Anushka Sharma on the eve of their 43rd and 27th birthdays.
KARAN JOHAR
His numbers Born on 25th May, 1972, Karan is a Number 7 (Ketu) person in numerology, also ruled by Number 5 (Mercury-Gemini) and his destiny number adds up to Number 4, which means he is also ruled by Rahu. Since he is ruled by Number 7, he is automatically ruled by Number 2 (Moon) as these two numbers always go hand in hand.
ANUSHKA SHARMA
Her numbers Anushka was born on 1st May, 1988 which makes her a Number 1 (Sun) person in numerology. Like all Taureans, she is ruled by Number 6 (Venus) while her destiny number adds up to Number 5 (Mercury).
His personality Karan’s association with the celebrity circuit and the world of glamour has everything to do with the fact that he is a Number 7 person. His sun-sign Gemini and his association with the planet Mercury, makes him a sharp person with a great power of expression and great oratory skills. His destiny number makes him a formidable person in his field.
Her personality Being ruled primarily by Number 1-the most powerful number, it is not surprising that Anushka made her film debut opposite none other than Shahrukh Khan in a Yashraj production being directed by Aditya Chopra. It couldn’t have got bigger than this! Her flawless beauty and complexion is thanks to Venus, which brings a glow on her face as she looks so fresh all the time. The mercurial effect makers her talkative and communicative in such a friendly manner that she can connect with people very easily.
What the year ahead has in store for him Karan will now be entering the 44th year of his life which indicates a slow period for him. His health is also likely to suffer due to overexertion. After a stupendous 2014 with three back to back hits apart from the sole exception of Ungli, his next release Brothers is also likely to do very well at the box-office. On the acting front, Bombay Velvet is likely to get him a lot of appreciation. However Karan should continue to concentrate on direction and running his production house which he is so good at.
What the year ahead has in store for her Anushka will now be entering the 28th year of her life which indicates that her best phase is just about to start. Her work in the soon-to-bereleased Bombay Velvet will be appreciated after which her next film, Dil Dhadakne Do will also do extremely well at the box office. Even on the personal front, her equation with star cricketer Virat Kohli (born on 5th November, 1988) is a good one. Remedies to beat the blues To get optimum benefits, Karan should ideally spell his name as KARAN YASH JOHAR so that his name vibrates on a more auspicious number. Wearing a hessonite on his middle finger on a Saturday night (about two hours after sunset) would ensure that his passion for art/cinema stays alive forever just like his late father Yash Johar.

TRAVEL
Not only is Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park a wonderful place for nature lovers to visit on vacation, but this park also boasts a rich history and an equally rich and fascinating biodiversity. If you’ve visited the park before or if you’re planning a visit sometime soon, then below you can find some information that will make your experience that much more meaingful. A Brief History of the Park Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, made up of Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta and Glacier National Park in Montana, became the world’s very first international peace park on June 18, 1932. The union was achieved through the combined efforts of Rotary clubs in Canada and the United States. The park was later designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 6, 1995. Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is also a declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and both the Canadian and American sides of the park work together to share the management of the interconnected and delicate park ecology. These joint efforts represent peace and goodwill on a global scale, and the park has been a model for other peace parks that have been set up in the years since its creation. Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park
also provides an excellent model of the sort of positive environmental stewardship that everyone should strive to emulate in their day-to-day lives. The Natural Environment Part of the draw and unique beauty of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is the complete absence of foothills. Instead, one is treated to beautiful vistas of the prairie landscape transitioning smoothly into a mountain landscape, which is quite a rare sight in the world’s mountainous regions. As the name would suggest, the landscapes of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park have been shaped by thousands of years of glacial erosion. This process has resulted in the five unique ecoregions of fescue grassland, aspen parkland, montane forest, subalpine forest, and alpine tundra. These various ecoregions are home to vegetation such as the dwarf alpine poppy,
the dwarf birch, the balsam poplar, the trembling aspen, and danthonia and festuca grasses. There is no shortage of wildlife in WatertonGlacier International Peace Park either, as it is home to hundreds of species of birds, 20 different species of fish, and over 60 different species of mammals. Several top mountain predators such as cougars, wolves, and bears live in the park, so make sure you brush up on wilderness safety before setting off on one of the many hikes in the area! Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park has something for everybody, from boat tours, to sightseeing, to adventurous treks in the wilderness. If you ever find yourself in Southern Alberta or Northern Montana, then make sure you pay the park a visit. By: Eva Kurilova

OPINION
Stars voice their opinion on changing
censorship norms in films
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is lately in the eye of a storm with stars and filmmakers voicing their protests against its new guidelines. More recently, the CBFC issued a list of 28 objectionable and abusive words to be banned from films. A section of Bollywood stars voiced their opinion on why censorship in India, is proving to be a hindrance to creative freedom.
“I think we should allow the censors to do their work and take action where it is justified. In a democratic country like India where there is freedom of speech, everyone has a right to his opinion. It’s also not fair to obstruct the release of a film on unreasonable grounds. I too have made films like Delhi Belly but then it all depends on the situation or the context in which scenes are shown in a film. All the same, I don’t think we should try and preempt. I think the censorship process does take its period of time and one should accept their suggestions as long as they are right. All the same, I don’t think adults should be kept away from content that may seem objectionable to one particular group. It is for adults to decide what they would like to watch. In that respect, I think it is best to work out a rating system for films.”
“The debate about censorship of films has been going on for a long time now. On one side we live in a democratic set-up where we have freedom of expression and on the other hand, we have rules which prevent us from depicting something simply because they are seen in a bad light. It is important that the censor board has a broader perspective in its perception of films. Some films do have a negative effect on the minds of audiences but it gets irksome if you have a generic rule for everything. It is fair enough to have guidelines but rather than holding the release of a film, they can make categories and grade a film according to its content. I think the censors should start rating films in various categories right from those for the under-10 kids or the ones fit for teenage viewing and those that are strictly for adults.”

OPINION
“The Censor Board has certain guidelines and it is imperative that you adhere to them in order to get your film cleared. However these guidelines can occasionally impinge on your freedom of expression. For instance, if an actor is playing the role of a smoker, how can you stop him from smoking on screen? Likewise, if a painter is asked to use only certain colors, you will be curbing his freedom of expression. You can add a disclaimer but you have to ensure that it is aesthetically added. Like India, the other countries also have censor norms. In many countries violent films are given a different certification. Also there is a caution note that goes with some television serials and films, which clearly defines what can and cannot be watched by certain age groups.”
If an actor is playing the role of a smoker, how can you stop him from smoking on screen? Amitabh Bachchan
Amitabh Bachchan “I feel the Censor Board was more liberal in its attitude a few years ago. There was a time when Amitabh Bachchan lit a cigarette on screen in one of the most defining shots but that did not go with a disclaimer. Today, it is a strict no-no. The censors have become more regressive today. When we talk about culture, we should also understand that culture should be inculcated and not taught. Besides, films need to reflect what is happening in the society”.
“I think the Censor Board is perfectly justifies in its stringent laws. Lately, some filmmakers are taking too many liberties and too much is shown in films. A majority of films also commodify women and use them for titillation. Even the dance movements and the costumes are very suggestive. At a time when rape incidents are on the rise, filmmakers have a responsibility towards society because films directly influence the psyche of the audiences.”
Richa Chaddha
“How cautious can a filmmaker get while making a film? Everyone has a mind of his own and you have to understand that films are made for entertainment apart from the exception of those films which demean women. The censorship guidelines are definitely justified in such films but the same should not be applied for a scene in another film, with a completely different context. Then there are different kinds of films. Some films shock you and you should allow them to do so. You can’t be extra cautious while making a film otherwise you will end up making boring films to please everyone. It is important for filmmakers to have cinematic liberties while directing films.”
Emraan Hashmi
Om Puri
“The society has changed now and that needs to be recognized. We can’t make rules just for the sake of making them. CBFC can certify a film, not ban it or prevent its release simply because it does not confirm to their norms.”

Success can be damaging to your career at times because it affects your ability to see things realistically
There was a time not so long ago when Emraan Hashmi was accorded the title of Hit Machine with his ability to deliver boxoffice hits one after the other. The serial kisser suddenly found himself in the limelight with some of the best-known filmmakers vying with each other to sign him. However that phase was short-lived. Since the past two years, Emraan has been going through difficult times both on the professional and personal front. His career graph took a dip after his films failed consecutively at the boxoffice. On the personal front, the actor went through a tough ordeal when his four-year old son was diagnosed with firststage cancer. After successfully treating his son, the actor is now hoping to reclaim his box-office status with his latest release Mr. X. He is also looking forward to his next film, Hamari Adhuri Kahani in which he has been paired opposite Vidya Balan.
Your latest film Mr. X has you playing an altogether different role from the ones you have played so far. What made you take up this very different role? I was fascinated by the story from day one when I was given the first narration. Besides I found the character of Raghu a.k.a Mr X quite intriguing. The character of Raghu, who goes through a traumatic phase in life and later undergoes a transformation to become invisible, has many shades to it. He is this nameless, faceless person who introduces himself as Mr. X, because he is dead for the world. The revenge part of the story and even the romantic moments, were interesting. There have been films like Hollow Man and Mr. India in the past with similar subjects. Were you hoping that it would work for you? The similarity is limited to the concept of invisibility. Mr. X also has a romantic angle and how the woman begins to hate the man due to his ideological approach towards everything. The film also has some comic moments. As for it working for me, there are times when even the best of films fail to create excitement at the box-office. It is something that is beyond the control of an actor. How was the experience working in a film that is replete with special effects? It was definitely exciting. When a film has extensive special effects, you are also
required to give multiple shots in the same frame, as there are many layers of shots that need to be seen. Performance wise it is not really difficult. Apart from that, I would like to say that I have shot 80 percent of the film. Beyond that the VFX team managed a few scenes without my presence but it is the final effects on screen that make a big difference. It’s been two years since you delivered a hit at the box-office. Are you counting on this film and your next film to make the difference? I hope and pray that all my films do well at the box-office. In the last 9-10 months, I realised that I had reached a saturation point in my career with the kind of films that I was doing. It is important for an actor to try out new things after a stage, lest his career stops growing. That’s the reason I also cut down on signing films in the recent past. On my part, I have never misled my producers. I have always told them that I can guarantee a box-office flop and not a hit! I think the audience perception about me will take some time to change, because I have been doing similar roles for the last ten years. You are an ardent fan of Hollywood films. How would you rate Mr X in comparison to sci-fi films made in Hollywood? In Hollywood, the budgets are huge for special effect films because they are addressing a world audience. I can’t discuss the budget of Mr. X but the VFX and

graphics are definitely above the ordinary. I am glad that we have already managed to connect with the audiences due to the emotional undercurrent in the film. You have acquired the reputation of an actor who caters to the adult audiences with most of your films being accorded an ‘A’ certificate. Do you think Mr X will make the difference? I am hoping that this film will make a difference and prove that I can also cater to family audiences. Initially when I announced that Mr. X was a family film, people would give me a weird look and refuse to believe it. They can now see the film for themselves and find out. What does your son have to say about your films? My five-year old son has never watched any of my films so far. Mr. X is the first film he watched recently along with his friends. He was scared at one point when the film showed the transformation scene where the hero goes invisible. Otherwise he danced throughout the film. He is looking forward to seeing it again. Has the attitude of the industry changed towards you during the best and worst phases of your career? I have noticed that people here react strangely when an actor gives a big hit. A couple of films later the same actor goes unnoticed. In my case, I did not start in the industry as a lead hero. It was only gradually that I came in the limelight. From being a supporting character to playing three villainous roles and finally playing the lead role in a film, I have seen people around me changing from Friday to Friday. I have personally detached myself from hits and flops. The important thing to remember is not to get demoralised with the attitude 26 May 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
of people around you. Success can be damaging to your career at times because it affects your ability to see things realistically. But with a failure you can always analyse your shortcomings and come back with a bang. Failures can really inspire you to fight with the situation if you are a fighter. Otherwise it can also knock out those who are feeble minded. How will you define your experience working in Hamari Adhuri Kahani, with Vidya Balan for the third time in your career? We didn’t really interact with each other during the making of The Dirty Picture and Ghanchakkar, but we always shared a great comfort level with each other. Hamari Adhuri Kahani is an intense romantic film and the rapport we share really worked for the film. We had a blast shooting on the sets of the film. The film has a very interesting story and
those who have been in love with be able to connect and identify with it, especially women. I saw the film last week and I am happy with the way it has shaped up. I am hoping to get a good response from the audiences. Are you looking at venturing into production in the near or distant future? I have no such plans. Presently, I am looking at some very promising possibilities on the acting front and I am happy with the kind of offers that are coming my way. By Srabanti Chakravarthy

From her debut venture, Dev D to her recently released, Margarita With A Straw, Kalki Koechlin has come a long way in her career. Known for her unconventional looks, Kalki has never quite made it as a conventional Bollywood heroine but she has definitely made a difference to the offbeat characters she has essayed on screen so far. not perform well, I don’t feel bad about it. My award is my work.
The film has made a big difference to my perception of life
Tell us about your next venture Mantra? Mantra is a film about changing India. In the film, my father is a business man whose business is suddenly taken over resulting in conflicts and tensions in the family.
What has a film like Margarita With A Straw taught you? The film has made a big difference to my perception of life. As a person, it has taught me about how attitude can make a big difference to the way you think and feel. I found Laila’s journey a very inspiring one. She is one who falls and gets up all the time. We all have some shortcomings and we sit and brood over them. Few of us have the attitude of taking things in our stride like Laila. When the girl is told that she is suffering from cerebral palsy, she simply smiles and accepts it as a part of her life. I have also realized that as an actor there are great possibilities to explore roles as long as you work hard on the character and prepare for it. What was your reaction when director Shonali Bose approached you for the role? I was not at all confident about doing the role when I first read the script. I clearly conveyed this to the director Shonali. I also told her that I would need six months of preparation if we were indeed going ahead with the film. She later introduced me to Malini Chibb, her cousin on whom the entire story is based. I started studying the role thereafter. I took one step at a time in order to get into the feel of the character. Apparently you spent a lot of time with Malini in order to get the nuances of the character right. What was the kind of preparation that went into the role? While I was getting acquainted to Malini, I also met her physiotherapist to find out more about her physical limitations, the problems she faced in her day-today movements and her breathing pattern. I also went around with her to public places to find out how people reacted to her. I also realized that she had the same feelings like all of us. I saw her dancing, drinking and celebrating life. I also experienced what it was like to be stationed in a wheel chair for a long period of time. We did intensive workshop for six weeks when I was totally on the wheel chair. Did you get any strange reactions? One reaction that stunned me was of the costume boy. He had seen me during the shooting of Dev D. When he saw me in the wheel chair during the shoot of the film, he
You have worked with two women directors Zoya Akhtar in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Shonali Bose in Margarita With A Straw. Which of the two did you find more inspiring? It depends on the director and their personalities. Shonali cries and laughs a lot. She is very emotional. Zoya is more like a man who orders on the sets and gets things done. She is very clear in her head about her priorities. I have worked with another director Ayaan Mukherjee in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and he talks so much, he can go on like a woman.
suspected that I was a victim of a serious accident and went around asking everyone about it. That itself gave me the confidence to go ahead with the role. How did you manage the warbled speech? The trick to that was breathing. People with cerebral palsy have a lower breath and their speech is broken. Also a person afflicted with this disorder has a weak tongue. It is like somebody is trying to hold your tongue and prevent you from speaking. I took little shortcuts with the words. I was also advised to put a marble in my mouth to limit the movement of my tongue. Do you think the role in Margarita With A Straw was one of your toughest roles? I have never made so much effort for any other role in my career as this one. You can’t fake it when you are working on a role of a cerebral palsy patient; you will easily be caught if you do so. It’s one film where I dedicated myself completely. Now I feel I should work more hard for all my films. Were you disappointed by the fact that your last film Happy Ending didn’t do well at the box-office? Irrespective of the box-office response, I enjoyed working with directors Raj and D.K. who are great filmmakers. I got to play a different role of a sycophant. I do films when the role interests me. If the films do
Now that you have worked on a film with cerebral palsy as the subject, are you planning to do something for the cause? I have been working with ADAPT centre, a charitable organization that works with India’s disabled population. I was in the Mumbai Marathon with Malini. I have become friends with them now. I try to give them as much time as I can for the cause. The director has touched upon the topic of homosexuality in the film, how was the experience? It’s very sensitively shot. You are not looking at the sexuality. It’s very real. She’s uncomfortable when she kisses a woman and she reads a book on it. Her mother refuses to accept it. There’s no social support in our country. The reality of it is all there. Deepika Padukone has done a video on women empowerment, how do you look at it? It’s basically about gender equality between men and women. I think it is important to include men in discussions on women empowerment. It is only when the mind-set changes that everything else will undergo a change. In the professional sense we should be equal. By S. Bhagat

Shahid opts for destination wedding Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor is all set to tie the knot with his lady love, Delhi-based Mira Rajput, on June 10 in the picturesque island of Bali in Indonesia. Shahid and Mira apparently met at a gathering at a philosophical organization, Radha Soami Satsang, of which Shahid’s father Pankaj Kapoor is a follower. Apparently Shahid suggested the idea of a destination wedding, since he wanted it to be a low-key affair with only family members and close friends of the two families. Incidentally, Shahid’s next film Shandaar with Alia Bhatt is also about destination weddings.
John watches Govinda’s moves to get his comic timing right He has done comedy films like Garam Masala and Housefull 2 in the past but John Abraham is a bit anxious about his upcoming comedy, Hera Pheri 3, which will see the actor playing a double role for the first time on screen. Sources reveal that John will have to watch out his comic timing and put in his best performance for the film. In order to prepare himself mentally for the role, the otherwise serious actor has now started watching comedies to get his comedy act right. Sources close to the actor reveal that he has been regularly watching some Govinda starrers directed by David Dhawan, observing the ace comedian’s mannerisms. Incidentally, Hera Pheri is the second franchise after Welcome, in which John Abraham has replaced Akshay Kumar. The film will also have Abhishek Bachchan playing a prominent role as it retains its previous cast of Suneil Shetty and Paresh Rawal. It may be recalled that the first two instalments of Hera Pheri created a laugh riot at the box-office and expectations are pretty high from the third instalment of this rib-tickling comedy. www.visionasia.com.au | May 2015 31

The star comedian, who is celebrated for his dance moves, is judging the reality show along with ace choreographers Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis. The veteran actor recently had a brief media interaction in which he spoke about his decision to return to television, his career and how his equation with David Dhawan had changed over a period of time.
After refusing several promising television shows in the past, what made you say yes to DID Supermoms? As you know I have done television before and I used to get a lot of offers from television but I did not find any of them exciting, though the money was very good. When the makers of Dance India Dance Supermoms approached me as a celebrity judge, I took it up because I love dance and enjoy doing anything related to dance. I also felt that this would be a great opportunity to connect with talented moms and help them to showcase their talent on a national platform. The second reason is my mother who has always been a big inspiration in whatever I have done in life. She is no more with us but I still feel her presence around me and that’s a blessing. What is your criterion for judging moms? First and foremost I look at the expression, which is the most important factor for any form of dance. I personally believe that any dance form should be easy and casual but it should be replete with expressions. Personally, my favourite dance form is the Govinda style dance which the kids perform during Janmashtami on the streets of Mumbai. At one point you too had to struggle hard to make a mark in your career. What would you say has been the key to your success? My struggle in life started at the early age of 14. I wanted to pursue acting but didn’t know anyone in the field. Fortunately, I always had the right amount of passion to sustain in the industry but I owe my success entirely to my mother. I think my mother’s blessings have always been with me. I always followed her advice and obeyed her. I have seen the worst time of my life but due to my mother’s blessings and love, I have managed to overcome everything. Are you content with the kind of roles that you are doing in films? I have no complaints. Last year I had two big releases but they did not perform too well at the box-office. I did not get upset by that. Rather, I was happy about the fact that two of my films Happy Ending and Kill Dil got released at a time when my films
were not releasing for almost four years. I got a lot of appreciation for the song in Kill Dil, when I wasn’t even expecting to do a song in the film. In Happy Ending, I thought I would be merely playing a cameo but my fans liked me in that brief appearance. It was my biggest achievement. Now I am eagerly looking forward to my next film Abhinaychakra, which I have also written. The film is complete and ready to release. Actors like Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh are often compared to you for their spontaneity on screen and their dancing steps. What is your take on that? It feels good. I have seen Varun grow up in front of my eyes and I have always seen my sparks in both Ranveer and Ranbir. They are all hardworking and dedicated. They came in the industry thoroughly prepared and that’s really commendable. Unlike the modern-day actors, I never gave any importance to six packs and eight packs when I was at the peak of my career. But looking at them today, I feel that they all look so healthy and fit. They must be definitely making a lot of efforts to maintain that physique. Your daughter Namrata is finally making her debut in films. Are you happy for her? I am definitely happy for her but Namrata is a sensible girl and I have never gone to her set and disturbed her. I would not like to give the impression that I am interfering in her work or influencing people by doing so. Whatever she has done, it’s her hard work and passion towards the art. I am always there for her. On the contrary, I often consult her when I am confused. Will you work with David Dhawan again? When I needed David Dhawan the most in my bad times he was not there. When someone thinks that you are not competent enough to do his film, it is futile asking him for work. David and I gave several blockbusters films at the box office. I hope the affection remains the same. Right now he is a proud father and I want him to be happy and enjoy this phase. I don’t discuss his films. By Srabanti Chakrabarthy

Kangana to play
Meena Kumari in biopic

She lived a tumultuous life filled with passion, romance and a tragic grandeur. Now director Tigmanshu Dhulia is all set to chronicle the life and times of the late Meena Kumari in a biopic adapted from the late journalist Vinod Mehta’s biography on the legendary actress. Dhulia himself has been an ardent fan of Meena Kumari for a long time. It is a well-known fact that his Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster was inspired by Meena Kumari’s best-known work, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
After recently winning the National Award for her performance in Queen Kangana Ranaut has got another ace up her sleeve. The actress has been chosen to the actress to play the role of the legendary tragedy queen, Meena Kumari, in a biopic on her life. He tells Subhash K Jha why Kangana was his first choice for the role.
Dhulia who is currently wrapping his latest project Yaara is excitedly looking forward to working on the project. Says the filmmaker, “I bought the rights of the book long ago. It is a fascinating tale of a life lived on the edge. I don’t know which aspects of her life I’ll go into. At the moment I don’t have a script or a studio to back the project. But I am making the film for sure, though not right away.” The director is also keenly looking at the chapters from Meena Kumari’s very colourful life that he will portray on screen. Besides her husband filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, the legendary actress was said to be close to several men including writer-director Gulzar, and actors Raj Kumar and Dharmendra. To start with, Dhulia has already confirmed Kangana Ranaut to play the role of Meena Kumari in the film. The filmmaker insists that he chose Kangana because she
was the only actress who could convey the tragic pathos of Meena Kumari’s personality. “There is a profound sadness in Kangana’s eyes, the same quality that we saw in Meena Kumari’s eyes but it’s her profound voice that further strengthened my resolve to sign Kangana. When I heard her in her debut film Gangster I was reminded of Meena Kumari. She has the same haunting quality about her voice that suggests pain, grief, wisdom and seduction. I knew then and there that if I ever make a film on Meena Kumari it would have to be Kangana who plays the legendary actress.” Interestingly, this is not the first time a film is being made on Meena Kumari’s life. In 1981 the mighty Sohrab Modi had made an appalling Meena Kumari film titled Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahani starring a starlet Dolly in the title role with another actress Sona playing the role of Madhubala in the same film. Surely Tigmanshu Dhulia would do a better job of the legendary actress’ life story.

Rati Agnihotri walks out of 30-year old marriage due to
domestic violence
Yesteryears popular actress Rati Agnihotri finally breaks her silence on domestic violence and her decision to end her marriage in a conversation with Subhash K Jha
I am still hurting because of the last beating. I don’t even have the strength to go and see my ailing mother 38 May 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au

After maintaining a dignified silence and enduring a violent marriage for a prolonged period of time, veteran actress Rati Agnihotri has finally made up her mind to call off her 30-year long marriage, “Yes, it’s time for me to move one. I’ve taken a very long time to take the right decision but now I am sure that it’s the right step,” Rati reveals. According to the actress, best known for her performances in Shaukeen and Kamal Haasan starrer, Ek Duje Ke Liye, she made the decision after much deliberation because she did not want her son, Tanuj to suffer on her account, “People are asking why I remained in the marriage for so long. Well firstly it’s my life. I don’t owe any explanations to anyone except my son Tanuj, for whose sake I chose to stay on. I’ve taken 30 years to opt out of my marriage. I’ve been patient and I’ve borne a lot,” she adds in an emotionally stirring voice. Rati states that she wanted her son to understand why she needed to break away from the marriage. “I was waiting for him to be mentally prepared for the inevitable. Tanuj is the only reason I stuck on. He is 28 now and man enough to face the truth in his mother’s life. He knew the truth ten years ago and he knows it now. He is well-aware what his mother has endured.” Reluctant to speak on what exactly went wrong with the marriage, Rati says, “I got married three weeks after my dad passed away. I went from my father’s protective attention straight into my husband’s home. I knew I had to adjust almost overnight to my new life. Being from a glamorous profession, I was scrutinized and judged far more harshly than the normal girl. Two years later Tanuj was born and I realised I had a life-long responsibility towards my son.” Regarding her decision to break away from the violent marriage, Rati says, “After the latest violence I couldn’t stay in the same
house any more. I had nowhere to go, so I drove down to my home in Lonavala overnight. My son was shooting in Pune. He came to meet me in Lonavala. Finally it was he who told me, ‘Mom, don’t live your life for me. Live for yourself. Do what you think is right for yourself.’ This was my son’s decision for me.” Rati reiterates that her son is the only reason she continued with the marriage. “Every time something of this sort happened within the four walls of my home, my son Tanuj was the only person I reached out to. In the past too he had always come to my rescue when I would call him for help. On my part, I’ve never failed as a mother and I don’t want the world to feel otherwise. No matter what happens Tanuj will continue to be the centre of my universe,” the actress insists. The actress is rather miffed with the way the media is projecting her life and questioning her silence for all these years, “I am surprised and hurt that my motives for speaking out to the law enforcement and legal machinery about my domestic problems are being questioned. Just because I chose to not speak about it, some sections of the media doubt the veracity of my claims but the truth will eventually prevail. They’re even calling up my son even as I am busy running around with my lawyers trying to make sense of what has happened in my life. Some sections have even forgotten that I have a 37-year connect with their tribe. Isn’t it their duty to grant me some grace dignity and honesty?” Rati is also upset with certain sections of
the media which reported about her being in a depressed state of mind, “Do I sound depressed to you? Do I sound desperate? If you don’t have access to me it doesn’t mean my life is open to distortion.” Rati would like to encourage other victims of domestic violence to come forward and speak out but not until the truth is there for everyone to know. “I have suffered for far too long. I am still hurting because of the last beating. I don’t even have the strength to go and see my ailing mother. I think it is important for women to speak out,” she says. In the meantime, she is trying to go on with her life as normally as possible. “I’ve gone through a lot. I am still running my house, watering my plants , cooking, speaking to my lawyers , paying my bill and also looking at film projects. Above all, I don’t want my son’s life to be affected because of what I have gone through. I am angry but determined,” the actress quips with a deep breath.

After doing a film, Mumbai Cutting with Rituparno Ghosh, what took you so long to attempt another Bollywood film? Mumbai Cutting comprised of 11 different short stories, out of which I was featured in the film directed by Rituparno Ghosh. At that time, I wasn’t aware that it was a part of ten stories. Those days, I was not too keen to come to Bollywood either. Also, I was never initially attracted to Bollywood. I did several big budget films in Bengali cinema, after which the wave of new cinema began and I started getting meaningful roles. I took up this film after I learnt that it was being directed by Dibakar Banerjee. I also found the role of Angoori Devi meaningful.
Weren’t you apprehensive about the fact that your role in Byomkesh Bakshi was dark and unconventional and even required you to shave half of your head? I wasn’t really worried about it. I have experimented with several women-centric roles in Bengali cinema and I saw this role as a new opportunity to experiment with my acting talent. My mother cried for days and Dibakar was petrified at the very idea. Besides, this is not the first time I have attempted such a role. I have done dark, brooding and unhappy roles in the past too. I have also experimented with clothes and looks, from the overweight look to the size zero appearance. How was it working with Sushant Singh Rajput who has barely done three films and is very young? He is a very dedicated and intelligent actor. He loves to experiment and the films he has done in the past speak about his dedication and his choosing a film like Byomkesh Bakshi. How different is the experience of working in a Bollywood film, from a Bengali film? The biggest difference in Bengali and Bollywood cinema is the budget. Films made in Bengal cater to a much smaller audience
Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee who played the role of an actress from the 1940’s in the recently released, Byomkesh Bakshi is a mother of a 14-year old daughter and has been living life on her own terms. The unconventional actress who has made a mark in Bengali cinema, talks about her films, her transition from Bengali cinema to Bollywood and how she is unfazed by all the controversies revolving around her.
and are made on extremely small budgets. I found the experience of working in a Hindi film exciting because I have been working in the same place for so long. The fact that it was a new place with new technicians and a different director made a difference. I also had a great time wearing Manish Malhotra outfits for the first time. I was pampered on the sets too. Has the tag of being a mother ever bothered you? I have never considered the mother tag as a limitation or a setback. Most actresses feel that it is a baggage to become a mother at a young age. There are many stars who don’t like to talk about it for this reason. Fortunately, we are living in a different era today. Times have changed and the audiences have now become far more receptive in comparison to earlier times. The face of the conventional Bollywood heroine has also undergone a change. Today it is talent that matters above everything else. I have seen reactions at the hall where men have literally gone crazy over my films. Even when the Byomkesh Bakshi trailers were out, people commented that Angoori Devi looked really hot. I know I can look hot despite being a mother. How comfortable are you with the idea of wearing a bikini on screen? It is not merely about exposure; today Bollywood makers have no qualms about experimenting with bold themes. I watched Badlapur where Radhika Apte was shown stripping and the scene was not meant to seduce the audiences. I too have done a nude scene in Bengali cinema and I had no qualms doing it because I felt it justified the storyline. If I feel that a particular scene is important and I feel comfortable with the director, I will not hesitate to go ahead with it. Wearing a bikini is passé now but I will have to ensure that I have a great body for it.
Your life has been mired by controversies from affairs to being accused of shoplifting from a boutique in a recent Singapore incident? I get to know of these stories only when I read them on the internet. As an actor I am aware of the fact that your life always comes under the scanner. Most media reports are make-believe and concocted but the problem is that they clarify only after the damage is done. I always think that your work matters at the end of the day more than anything else. If you put your foot down and refuse to react, they will stop talking about you. What about your daughter, is she interested in films as well? I have not thought about her career as yet. Nowadays kids have their own perception of life and they don’t like it if anyone interferes in their decisions. She is still young and is concentrating on her studies. What kind of relationship do you share with your daughter? I am proud to be a mother and my daughter has always been a strong support for me. She is my best friend today and we love each other’s company. We share everything with each other. What next? I am keeping a wait and watch attitude. Currently talks are in progress for a couple of projects but it is always the role that is the criterion for all decisions. By S Bhagat

Naserrudin Shah makes a bid to promote
cross-border
relations The encouraging response he received across the border for the recent launch of his memoire has prompted Naseeruddin Shah to take the initiative of bridging the gap between India and Pakistan to bring the two countries closer. The noted actor speaks to Subhash K Jha about the imperativeness of more collaboration between the two countries.
Excited by the overwhelming response he recently got in Pakistan for the launch of his memoire, veteran actor Naseerrudin Shah is now planning to take his relationship with the neighbouring country further by encouraging other artistes to travel to Pakistan. “The political divide between the two countries should be wiped away but that will never happen until we travel to Pakistan and interact with the local people. I think the artist community can take the first step in this direction”, Naseer reveals. The critically-acclaimed actor is also hoping to take up some very interesting roles in Pakistani films, “I have already done two Pakistani films Khuda Kay Liye and Zinda Bhaag and I’m very proud of both. I hope to act in more Pakistani movies in the near future.” Naseer also met some filmmakers in Pakistan recently and was quite impressed by their attitude towards films and their creative inclination despite being riddled with problems, “I met some young filmmakers in Pakistan who want to make films away from the beaten path. They are troubled by the state of affairs there. The young generation of Pakistan is very bright and they are not
taken in by the hate logic of politicians or the army,” Naseer avers. The actor, who travels to Pakistan every year to perform in the memory of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, is enthused by his recent visit to Karachi, where he had gone to launch his memoire, “I had a very satisfying visit and I had anticipated that kind of a response. They love me unconditionally in Pakistan. I feel very special in that country.” According to Naseer, the audiences across the border are totally in awe of all Indian actors, both from the older generation and the current superstars, “They have a great admiration for all our actors. For instance, Dilip Kumar is like God in Pakistan. They don’t adore any of their own cultural icons much as they adore Dilip Kumar. They also have a reverent affection in Pakistan for actors like Om Puri and Farooq Sheikh. That’s not enough. They are nuts about some of our stars like Salman and Shah Rukh.” Naseer feels that the warm welcome accorded to Indian artistes in Pakistan should also be reciprocated by India, “I have noticed that they welcome us in Pakistan with open arms. I hope we do
the same to Pakistani artistes. However it is unfortunate that performers from Pakistan are often prevented from performing in this country. Recently there was a very disturbing instance of a Pakistani artiste’s work being destroyed in Ahmadabad,” the actor reveals. The actor also feels that it is important for artistes and people from the film community to keep in touch with friends across the border, especially in times when there are strained political relations between the two countries, “I feel it is very important to have a person-to-person contact. I am glad that personalities from the film industry like Rajkumar Hirani are taking a step in this direction. We can’t afford to be swayed by all the political rhetoric. Politicians will change colours whenever it suits them,” he argues. The actor is now planning to make an appeal to the government to bridge the gap between the two countries by way of art, “I’d like to make a very strong appeal for that and it has nothing to do with my being Muslim. They are next door neighbours. It is time we interacted with them on a friendly platform,” he quips. www.visionasia.com.au | May 2015 45

I do a lot spinning which helps to keep my legs, lower back, thighs and hamstrings strong and in shape
Sunny Leone credits her fitness and her great looking body to her husband, Daniel Weber. “He is my inspiration when it comes to exercise. When I feel lazy to go for workouts, he is the one who pushes me to go the gym. He is the one who has made sure that I adhere to a fitness plan,” the actress smiles. Fitness Regime Unlike other stars Sunny is not a great yoga enthusiast. Instead she sticks to cardio exercises and spinning. The actress makes it a point to visit the gym at least thrice a week. She also does push-ups in order to build up her core strength and burn all the fat, “I do 100 push-ups and 100 squats every day after my cardio and weight training. That helps me cut down on all the fat and increases my stamina,” she reveals. Like other actresses, Sunny also has a tendency to put on weight on her hips, “It is the problem area on which I really work on. For this, I do a lot spinning which helps to keep my legs, lower back, thighs and hamstrings strong and in shape. I try and burn out at least 500 to 600 calories in every workout,” she admits. Sunny has also chalked out alternative exercises when she is shooting round the clock and has little time for workouts, “When I have no time to visit the gym, I make it a point to do spinning on my bike for 30 minutes.” Her dietary norms: Sunny believes that water is the best hydrant for a good skin and healthy body, besides fresh fruits and vegetables. “I keep sipping on water throughout the day. I make sure that I have at least 8-9 glasses of water in a day. I also include several servings of vegetables and fruits in my diet, besides chicken for my protein intake.”
and Sunny does not hold herself back. “I call them cheat meals. I love chocolates and can’t avoid all the sweets so I eat in moderation. I make up for it by working out an extra hour in the gym.”
Among the list of foods that she strictly avoids are soda, coffee and friend foods. “I keep away from all the stuff that is not good for the body. I see to it that I stack my fridge with healthy food,” she says. The Ek Paheli Leela actress says it’s difficult to have a healthy diet in India as a lot of oil is used in cooking, “I try to restrict my oil consumption as far as possible but it is not always possible to control it,” she says. She also makes it a point to curtail salts, “I avoid salts as it leads to water retention and bloating,” she explains. When she is busy shooting for long hours at a stretch she prefers simple food such as egg whites, vegetables and chicken. Her regular diet plan Sunny starts her day with a cup of Dunkin’ Donut coffee followed by breakfast which consists of egg whites and toasts. Lunch consists of chicken and salad with vegetables. Sunny avoids snacking as far as possible between meals but if she does feel hungry she prefers to have seasonal fruits or dry fruits. Dinner consists mostly of chicken, salad and steamed fish. There are days when she feels like binging
Hair and Skin Care: While she keeps a regular tab on her food intake and exercise, Sunny also has a proper skin care regimen in place to keep her skin bright and glowing, “I moisturize my skin a lot. Since we have a humid weather I make sure that my skin is clean before I go to bed. I use a lot of water-based and natural cosmetics and make sure that all my brushes and sponges are clean before use. I have trained my make-up artist to do the same,” she says. According to the actress, there are three factors that influence the way you look and feel- a regular exercise plan, proper diet and the right amount of sleep, “It is important that you balance these three factors if you want to keep looking good. It shows on your face and your body language when you eat well, exercise properly and have a sound sleep. Besides it is very important to be responsible for your fitness. Fitness can make a difference to the way you feel,” she quips.

Gurinder Chadha to stage
Bend It Like Beckham in London
Thirteen years after the release of the iconic film, Bend It Like Beckham, the film’s director Gurinder Chadha is all set to stage the film in London replete with songs and dances. Subhash K Jha finds out more.

The stage version is much more emotionally deeper and resonant than the film, though the climax of the film is hard to beat In 2002 filmmaker Gurinder Chadha made the film Bend It Like Beckham which also came to be acknowledged as one of the three most popular international projects directed by an Indian. The film which tracked the aspirations of a 17-year old British Indian female footballer, played by Parminder Nagra became an instant and enduring success. Now 13 years later, Gurinder is all set to take the film on stage in London with an entirely new cast with plenty of songs and dances. The famed director is all excited about her London theatrical debut with Bend It Like Beckham, “I am unbelievably excited about my musical coming to the West End. It has been one of the most creative experiences of my life working with my composer Howard Goodall, lyricist Charles Hart and choreographer Aletta Collins. The culture of London West End theatre world is poles apart from the film world but it’s all about storytelling albeit using a different platform.” Gurinder says the stage version of the wonderful story is very different in comparison to the film, “The stage version is much more emotionally deeper and resonant than the film, though the climax of the film is hard to beat! However as soon as you add music and emotional lyrics to any dramatic situation everything is heightened tremendously. Everyone in India knows that!” The British film director of Sikh Indian origin has great aspirations about the musical stage version of her iconic film. “My aim is
to make a British Asian Fiddler on the Roof for today’s audience! There are many similarities between my film and Fiddler On The Roof, a world of tradition under threat, a loving dad, daughters with their own agendas....You add Punjabi sounds and an English West End score and you have something that has never been seen before on the West End stage.” The play will have a completely different cast with Natalie Dew playing the role of the football crazy Jess with Lauren Samuels as Jules, a player with the local women’s football team and Jamie Campbell Bower as their coach Joe. Others in the cast are Ronni Ancona, Jamal Andréas, Preeya Kalidas, Tony Jayawardena and Natasha Jayetileke. Would Gurinder miss the original cast? “I loved my original cast. It was their presence that helped me make a beautiful movie, but for the stage I needed actors who could act, sing and dance ….triple whammy! The cast of the show artistes is exceptional. You will laugh and cry with them.” Gurinder recalls the amazing success of Bend It Like Beckham and the kind of emotions that went into the making of the film, “It was a very truthful film that wore its heart on its sleeve. Besides I made the film at a time when I had just lost my father. I was still grieving which is why the emotions were so raw and featured. The stage musical has become an even bigger tribute to my father and all the people of his generation who came to England and allowed their children to pursue the dreams they couldn’t,” she quips.

Preparation Time: 10 mins Cooking Time: 14 mins Makes 2 servings Show me for servings INGREDIENTS 1 cup deseeded and thinly sliced bitter gourd (karela) 2 tsp oil TO BE MIXED TOGETHER INTO A MIXTURE 1/2 cup finely chopped onions 1/4 cup grated cauliflower 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander (dhania) 1 tbsp besan (bengal gram flour) 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp coriander (dhania) powder salt to taste

Cover with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 10 to 12 minutes or till they turn brown in colour, while stirring occasionally. 2. Has Priyanka dropped the idea of going ahead with her home-production? It looks like Priyanka Chopra is unlikely to go ahead with her production debut, Madamji, which she had announced recently. The actress who is back to work after finishing a schedule of her American TV show, Quantico, is having a tough time coping up with her various commitments as a result of which her home production has taken a backseat. Sources reveal that Priyanka was to finish shooting the film in a start-to-finish schedule in April, but she could not go ahead with her plans as she had to join the unit of Sanjay Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. The actress has been rehearsing roundthe-clock since the past few days for a dance number in the film. The former beauty queen has also signed Reema Kagti's next opposite current Pakistani heartthrob, Fawad Khan, which has left her with little time for anything else. Sources reveal that Priyanka recently had a meeting with director Madhur Bhandarkar in which the two mutually decided to put Madamji on hold.
Vidya Balan is a great fan of Mahesh Bhatt Actress Vidya Balan, who has been missing from the scene for some time now, is eagerly looking forward to her next film, Hamari Adhuri Kahani. The actress recently admitted that she would always cherish the experience of doing the Mohit Suri directed film as it gave her a unique opportunity to work closely with celebrated filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who has penned the script of the film. She also revealed that she was returning to doing a love story after a long period of time. "It is a love story that I am doing after a gap of nine years. My last love story was Parineeta with Saif Ali Khan," she added. The National award-winning actress who is the brand ambassador of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) also expressed a keen desire to do a film that would be made and shot entirely in Melbourne. Balan will be back later this year during the IFFM to voice her opinions on the theme of ‘Equality’. The actress has been coming to Australia regularly as an ambassador of IFFM. 64 May 2015 | www.visionasia.com.au
