Salman Khan walks out free, readies for his next box-office Friday Most Bollywood stars would swear by the fact that Friday is a day that decides their fate at the box-office when their films come up for release. His last two films, Besharam and Roy flopped consecutively at the box-office and his latest film, Bombay Velvet has received a grim box-office response, despite its rich production values and promising music. Ranbir Kapoor is certainly not going through the best phase in his career. The actor now has his hopes pinned on his two forthcoming films, Jagga Jasoos and Tamasha. Here he talks about his latest film, Bombay Velvet, the low phase in his career, his films, his relationship with Katrina Kaif and why he shuns the social media.

What made you sign a period film like Bombay Velvet? Did you see any of Anurag Kashyap’s films prior to that? I had not seen any of Anurag Kashyap’s films. I was told that he makes intense films. My director friend Vikas Behl (of Queen fame) asked me to read the script of Bombay Velvet. I read the script on my way to Delhi and told him that I wanted to do it. He had been trying to make the film for the last eight years. You and Anushka are known to share a good off-screen bonding. How was it working with her in the film? Anushka is like a soldier who works for a film. She is not judgmental about the hero or her other co-stars. I have worked with several actresses but Anushka is different. She is not concerned about how glamorous or pretty she looks on screen. She is not obsessed with her looks. She only believes in concentrating on her role and how best she can portray it. There are very few actresses like her. Konkana Sen is another actor with a similar approach to acting. 10 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

COVER STORY

I do admit that we went overboard with the songs, fights and the comedy in Besharam

Considering that your last two films, flopped in a row, did you feel pressurized when you took up Bombay Velvet? I never take any pressure as an actor. Anurag had confidence in me and approached me with the script of Bombay Velvet, despite the fact that my last two films had flopped. Apart from that, flops are relative. It all depends on the investment and returns. In the case of Bombay Velvet, Anurag could keep the budget in check only because of my presence in the film. I am sure the budget would have gone overboard if they had a superstar like Aamir Khan playing the protagonist. Also, it is difficult to predict what works and what doesn’t at the box-office. In the case of Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, I guess it was the urban theme that worked for the film. However, we had no expectations from Barfi in which the hero was dumb and deaf and the girl was autistic. In the case of Besharam, I do admit that we were slightly overconfident and arrogant. We went overboard with the songs, fights and the comedy. Now I have realized that the audiences need a good story that is truthful and touches their hearts. It is rumoured that you were not confident about Bombay Velvet right from the word go? When the first promo came out there was a lot of negativity. The promo wasn’t received well and the general impression was that the film would not work commercially as Anurag Kashyap was directing it. Then there was this news that my father had asked them to reshoot some portions. But we decided that we should not get bogged down and

12 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

wait for the film’s release. We wanted the audiences to react to the film. Also, the people from the industry who watched the film before its release liked it. My father too loved the film when he watched it before its release. I was hoping that the audience would appreciate it. Do you feel let down when your films don’t do well? I do feel bad when my films don’t do well but then it’s over in two days and you start working on your next. The general perception is that you are too preoccupied with your personal life these days and have little time for your films? When I did films like Wake Up Sid, Rock Star, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, I was concentrating on my personal life too, but it didn’t affect my films. Now unfortunately my films are not faring well but that doesn’t mean I am preoccupied with my personal life. I am not on any social networking site and I don’t contradict news but I don’t allow anything to distract me from my work. Why are you averse to social networking sites? I believe that as actors or actresses we promote films, do commercials and we are seen everywhere. We have to maintain some mystery in life. With Twitter and Facebook, you are constantly available to everyone and there is no freedom of speech. If I write something there are ten interpretations so why take the extra burden of clarifying it. I do not understand how the PR machinery works either. I feel that my films should be spoken about more than anything else. I also feel that you lose your identity if you are overexposed. Do you get affected by rumours about your personal life? When people talk about my life, it’s because of my showmanship. They want to know what is going on in my life, what my mom thinks of my girlfriend or how I bond with my father. That’s because they are interested but I feel bad when they write negative things. It also irks me when the media goes ahead and publishes wrong news. I remember there was a piece of news that I had signed a film based on a book, Outsider. It was mentioned

COVER STORY

I do not have the confidence to see into my father’s eyes even today that they overheard me talking about it. I am totally against this kind of misreporting. Apart from that, I am very guarded about my personal life and will try to protect it as far as possible. Do you find Katrina Kaif inspiring? What have you learnt from her? When you fall in love with someone, who thinks about you all the time and is a better person in every way, you begin to hold that person in high regard. I definitely find Katrina inspiring be it the way she makes coffee or the way she breathes or does yoga or even the way she thinks. She is better than me on every front and she is teaching me to be a better person. I think she has taken me on the right path. When are you planning to get married? I will get married when I want to. We have not taken a decision yet as we are both busy with our work. I think it is unlikely to happen this year. Coming to your family, has your relationship with your parents changed over a period of time? I do not have the confidence to see into my father’s eyes even today. I avoid looking straight into his eyes. I was always a good boy in front of him. Now I have grown up but he is still my father. In the case of my mother, I have been very close to her. I can afford to throw all my tantrums in front of her. Most actors feel isolated and lonely at the top. How do you handle all the fame? Let me make one thing clear. First of I am not at the top and I have not seen that kind of adulation yet. A Hollywood actor had once stated that an actor works to be recognized all his life but when he does get fame and recognition, he tries to shun away from it. It’s stupid. When you are getting so much love and command you have to accept it. Look at Shah Rukh Khan, you feel he commands that love. You should enjoy that name and fame and live and enjoy it. Which are your upcoming films? I have completed shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha. Jagga Jasoos has been delayed and we still have to complete 60-70 days of shooting. It’s a detective musical on the

lines of Indiana Jones meets Tintin. On the other hand, Tamasha is a slice of life film and not really a love story. Are you looking forward to working with any other directors in particular? I want to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raj Kumar Santoshi, Ayan Mukherjee, Anurag Basu and Imtiaz Ali. I would like to join hands with anyone who makes interesting films and can cast me with new ideas. By S Bhagat (Rewritten by Manishaa R)

TELECHAT

She may not be happening in films but the vivacious Preity Zinta is definitely in the news for various reasons. The actress who made a mark for herself with films like Dil Se, Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam Namaste and Veer Zara, has also dabbled on the television scene with shows like India’s Got Talent and Up Close And Personal with PZ. Apart from this, Preity is also well-known for her keen business acumen and her preoccupation with hr IPL team, Kings XI. Now she is back on television as a full-fledged judge on the latest season of dance-based reality show, Nach Baliye. Experts from her interview.

Why did you choose a show like Nach Baliye to make a comeback on television? One of the reasons that inspired me to take up Nach Baliye was its new format. Initially the show was restricted to dancing but the latest season has many more factors at play like compatibility, love quotient and the overall chemistry between the couples. The show also promises loads of entertainment with dance and emotional content that has never been witnessed before. Moreover all the three judges are also new. Have you always been fascinated by the concept of dance and its many forms? I am fond of dancing and have always enjoyed it. For me it is a form of an expression. In fact, I was a skilled dancer before I joined films, though I never trained in classical dance like other actresses. I feel anyone with a fair knowledge of rhythm and expression can dance. I feel that it is important to enjoy the process of performing and it should reflect in your body language. One of the most revered dancers in our industry is Sridevi. Most choreographers will tell you that no one can match her expressions when it comes to dancing. Most contestants are emotional about their dismissal from the show. What would be your criteria for judging the show? I intend to be fair to everyone because there are contestants who are participating for the first time so you have to be compassionate to them. It is not easy to perform in front of live audiences and get judged. I believe in being honest about my opinion but I make sure that I don’t hurt the sentiments of the participants. I have never been rude to people because I don’t like rudeness. The parameters that I apply for judging a couple are their dancing skills, besides their chemistry and compatibility with each other. I have been a performer and I am aware of the fact that not all dances are technical.

Can you remember your first professional dance number? It is the dance number Jiya Jale from Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se, which is one of the most memorable numbers in my career. I can never forget this particular number because I was given the costume for the song just two minutes before the performance and it was extremely bold too. We shot the number in South India and all of us worked really hard on it. I remember Mani-Sir used to take us to the location early morning and after a long day we would rest at night only to set out for the shoot the next morning. Have there been moments in your career where you decided that the show must go on though you were not in the best of health? I remember one particular world tour with Shah Rukh Khan. We were in Spain and I was unwell and down with severe food poisoning. I was also dehydrated but I still performed with Shah Rukh because we both had four songs together. After the performance I fainted on stage but I took injections and performed once again as audiences cheered for me. During the making of Veer Zara too, I was sick due to the intense heat wave and my nose started bleeding but I continued working because that’s the difference of being a professional. I have always believed that winners never quit and quitters never win. Coming to the IPL matches, how you see the fate of your IPL team Kings XI this year? Last year was probably the best season of IPL for the Kings XI. We were close to winning the trophy and we had the support of fans all over India. This year too, I hope the boys do well. We have a wonderful team and I have never interfered in my team’s policy.

The latest season of Nach Baliye has many more factors at play like compatibility, love quotient and the overall chemistry between the couples

There was a time when you had shunned the media for the stories that were doing the rounds on your personal life. How you see the media interference in the personal lives of celebrities? I feel the Indian media behaves very irrationally these days. There’s a lack of maturity in the projection of news. Moreover, today the social media has become more important than the print media, which is why the press is desperate to make a point. They go overboard with their sensational headlines and even end up playing with the image of a celebrity when the headlines go wrong. It is not fair to judge the lives of celebrities and tarnish their image in one moment because they work so hard to reach a particular position in life. But it is not as if the entire media works for sensationalism, we do have good and responsible journalists too. Right now I am writing a book on the media which will take some more time to finish. Can you recall the weirdest rumour about yourself that stunned you? A few months ago, there was a rumour doing the round that I had converted into Islam and had migrated to USA. I went mad trying to clarify the truth especially since my near and dear ones were shocked with the news. What are the two things that you like and dislike about Mumbai? Mumbai has a very big heart and it welcomes everyone. You can build your own home and look at living for a lifetime here. The city also gives you like-minded people whom you can connect with. I also like the Vada Pav of Mumbai; it’s delicious and yummy but I hate the slums out here not to forget the big potholes on the roads. That really makes commutation really difficult.

You have been in the glamour industry for such long time. What is your take on size zero? I belong to a North Indian family and I am a big foodie at heart. I am lucky that I never needed the size zero figure for any of my films. I even see an egg in that zero figure (laughs). I do agree that I am in an industry where one needs to look good and stay fit and I make sure that I have maintained myself well but I don’t fancy a size zero at any stage in my life. He shot to fame as the Roadies host after which Rannvijay Singh became one of the most talked about personalities on the television scene. Known for his indomitable spirit and dogged determination, this actor is known to be extremely fitness conscious as his father, uncles and grand-parents all having served in the army.

Fitness came naturally to him Roadies’ actor Rannvijay Singh is a fitness freak to the core. The actor, who belongs to a family of army men, had the concept of fitness inculcated in his life from his early childhood days when he accompanied his father on his early morning exercise sessions. Rannvijay reveals that he never had to go out of his way in order to attain a certain level of fitness, “I never really strived to get the perfect body nor did I sweat it out in the gym for hours to enhance my physique. It came naturally to me,” the actor smiles. Rannvijay admits that he was seriously looking at the idea of following his father and joining the army at one stage in his life and fitness was one of the pre-requisites for it, “I had almost made up my mind about joining the army and fitness was mandatory. That’s how keeping fit became a habit with me.” He is an outdoor guy who loves adventure sports The actor has been playing basketball, cricket and volleyball since a long time. He is also fond of adventure sports and is glad about the fact that his current occupation gives him the opportunity to indulge in sports that can test his physical endurance and core strength. However he insists that he has never slogged it out in the gym to get his ripping muscles and formidable physique, “I don’t agree that sweating at the gym is the only way to fitness. I do exercise and work on my muscles but I don’t go overboard with the idea. I believe that simple exercises can make a big difference to your body. For instance, I try and take the staircase whenever I have little time for exercising.” The actor insists that he is an outdoor guy and loves exploring the countryside when he is shooting at outdoor locations, “I am the happiest when I am shooting on outdoor locations. I make the most of it by exploring

the country side. Besides outdoor activities are inspiring and keep your spirits high. I enjoy running, rock climbing, trekking, cycling, bike riding and even horse-riding,” says Rannvijay proudly. The 10-km run for fitness The actor’s favourite exercise is running, which he feels can make an amazing difference to one’s fitness, “I run 10 kms every day to keep myself fit. Running increases your stamina and also gives you the time to analyze yourself. I also indulge in various drills and go to a gym which is open 24x7. I don’t have a particular time since I am busy shooting. I also take power naps often,” he reveals. According to the actor, fitness and body-building are two different things. “One can have good muscles but may not be fit. No diet fads for him Like his affinity for all things natural, Rannvijay also ensures that he does not depend on artificial food supplements to enhance his fitness, “I think fruits are the best supplements that provide you all essential vitamins.” The actor doesn’t believe in any diet fads too. “I don’t follow any fixed diet but I make sure that I stay away from all fried foods and cheese; I also keep a tab on my carbohydrate intake and have small meals throughout the day.” He tries to ensure that he includes a lot of eggs, chicken salads, fruits and dry fruits in his diet, “The idea is to eat healthy all the time. More importantly I drink lots of water. I avoid junk food, smoking and am not into drugs. ” he informs. He does not hesitate to indulge in sweets once in a while, “I don’t worry mad over what I eat. I eat what I love to eat and make up for it by running more and more,” he quips.

TRAVEL

The western Mediterranean is filled with some true gems for cruise lovers, and being not all that far from the UK makes it an ideal part of the world for a short break, or even to see just why cruising is so thoroughly addictive if you've never tried it before. Maybe you'll try some of these ports of call during your western Mediterranean adventure. Ibiza This beautiful Balearic Island is not all about the nightlife, but there’s plenty of that if you want it. On the other hand, the old town is a delightful place with plenty of culture where you can take a relaxing wander while your ship’s at port. Winding cobbled streets and historic churches will give you a taste of this authentic Spanish island as you amble around the old town. To see a bit of nature’s fascinating and slightly unusual handiwork, head north to the Can Marçà Caves. This impressive place was once a smuggling hotspot but now entertains visitors by its enchanting waterfalls and weird and wonderful geologic formations.

unfinished is perhaps part of the allure that draws a healthy 2.8 million visitors a year. Unbelievably, the completed structure (whenever that may happen) will exhibit a tower at least half as high again as those already standing. A work in progress it may be, but the fascination factor is hard to beat. Afterwards, take a stroll down Las Ramblas with its shops, boutiques and all manner of street entertainers. If your visit is well timed, you may get opportunity to try out the La Boqueria food market, a riot of colour with its vibrant and colourful fruit stands. Fresh fish, meat and cheeses are also readily available. It’s well worth just a look if nothing else.

Barcelona A very trendy mix of ancient and modern awaits you in this world famous city. As you disembark you’ll be greeted by a host of eating and drinking options around the port which is a great place to unwind as you let the hustle and bustle of the city take place around you. No doubt you’ll want to take a look around the inspiring La Sagrada Família. The fact that the cathedral is

Marvel at the intricate stained glass windows and the ornate stonework. This beautiful feature of Palma Majorca overlooks the Parc de la Mar and the Mediterranean. Once you get onto the

mediaeval streets, perhaps you’ll have time to visit a few art galleries such as Ferran Cano or the El Museu Fundación. If you can fit it in before getting back on ship, a great place for stunning views is Bellver Castle whose very name means ‘beautiful view.’ Ajaccio While you’re in a seafaring spirit, perhaps you’ll stop off at Napoleon’s birthplace in Corsica. There are plenty of enticing dining opportunities built around the port as you step on land. Then there is the vibrant market held at The Square Cesar Campinchi from Monday to Saturday where you will see fresh produce laid out in colourful displays as well as local delicacies. Art lovers will enjoy perusing the Fesch Museum with its treasure trove of fine arts. Don’t forget to try some of the local beaches too before getting back on ship. Of course, there’s much more to see in the western Med. Television is not as easy and frivolous as it is perceived to be 26 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

There was a time when Rajeev Khandelwal was known as the heartthrob of television with girls swooning over him. Better known as Sujal from Kahiin To Hoga, Rajeev was one of the most talked about actors on the television screen. His subsequent shows also grabbed a lot of eyeballs until Rajeev quietly switched over to the big screen with a brilliant film like Aamir and followed it up with films like Shaitan, Samrat & Co and Table No 21. Now the actor is back on television in the role of a suave television anchor in a serial called, Reporters. He recently spoke about his decision to return to television and role and his perception of the media.

TELECHAT

In the television industry, you are constantly under pressure to deliver day after day unless you are making a finite series

Your transition to films paid off initially when your first film clicked at the boxoffice after which you went through a low phase in your career. Is that the reason why you chose to make a comeback on television? This is not the first time I am being asked this question. After doing films when I did Sach Ka Saamna as the host, I was asked whether I had returned to television for good. Let me clarify that television is not as easy and frivolous as it is perceived to be. There are times when even the biggest of actors are unable to handle television. Fortunately for me, the audiences have known and admired me since my Kahiin Toh Hoga days. I chose Reporters because I felt that this kind of a show had never been explored on television for a long time.

competition and creating breaking news headlines by understating facts. What is personally important for you if were to play a reporter in real life? I believe that ethics is more important than anything else but if you ask this question to someone like Kabir, it doesn’t matter. For news anchors and reporters like Kabir, breaking news is above everything else. Now when I am working on a show like Reporters I know how much a journalist has to chase a news story. We also went to few news rooms to get familiar to our characters. Have you ever been at the receiving end due to inaccurate or untimely news published about you? It was sometime back, before our marriage. When I was dating my wife, Manjiri, someone printed an article with her picture stating that she was my girlfriend. I had requested the reporter not to publish her picture but I was told that the news was already out that. Both of us panicked because her parents did not belong to the film fraternity and it was a bit premature to announce anything like that. I hastily called up my parents and her family and warned them that something like this was underway.

What are the changes that you have witnessed on the television scene in the last ten years? I think the constant pressure on actors to live up to the deadlines of daily soaps is still the same. In the television industry, you are constantly under pressure to deliver day after day unless you are making a finite series. But there is a definite change in the way shows are being shot. I don’t feel like I am shooting for a daily soap. We are shooting on a film camera for Reporters. The quality of production is also enhanced and the show is being directed by a noted film director, Goldie Behl. He has a very clear vision and a planned approach in handling the subject. When it comes to your favourite anchors on news channels, whom would you like to choose and why? I like Ravish Kumar from NDTV; he conveys his point of view very subtly without yelling at people. I am not referring to Arnab Goswami from Times Now. I also love Rajdeep Sardesai and Prannoy Roy. I would say that my character Kabir in Reporters is an amalgamation of Rajdeep, Arnab Goswami, Rahul Kanwal (Headlines Today) and Shekhar Gupta. If you were to ask me about the media I like best, I think it is the print media. It is not easy to present your perspective in a few words. In contrast, it is very easy to make a point on the electronic media. The magic of words is an art and it

How would you define your co star Kritika Kamra? I was pleasantly surprised to see someone as passionate and committed as Kritika. She is completely in sync with all of us. It is very rare to get likeminded co-stars on a show and Kritika is one of them. Also she has no tantrums and takes less time to get ready.

will be always like this. Do you feel media goes overboard at times and misuses its freedom of speech? I think the media should be self-regulatory, you have to think about the consequences and realise that whatever you write or present can affect people. Media needs to take responsibility for whatever it does. News reporters are often faced with the moral dilemma of living up to the

When does one get to see you again in films? I do have a movie lined up later in the year but honestly I want to now concentrate on Reporters. I really hope nothing comes out in the next one year. However it is entirely in the hands of the producer as to when he wants to release the film.

For news anchors and reporters like Kabir, breaking news is above everything else www.visionasia.co.nz | June 2015 27

I took a three-year break because I felt I was repeating myself

Three years after his last appearance in Tanu Weds Manu, south sensation Madhavan is back on the Hindi film scene with Tanu Weds Manu Returns, the sequel to the first installment, which is making waves at the box-office. The actor who has been lying low on the Hindi film front for a while now, has also turned producer with another Hindi film. What was your first reaction when you were approached for the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu? Were you apprehensive of living up to expectations? I was no doubt excited about the idea but I was also aware of the fact that sequences are looked at with a lot of skepticism. Besides a sequel like this has never been attempted in Bollywood where the story takes off exactly from where it ended four years ago. Considering these parameters, we were under pressure to live up to expectations. How comfortable were you essaying the role of a Punjabi considering that you

come from a totally diverse culture in the south? I have no doubt made a name for myself in the south but I have a culturally diverse background. Few people are aware that I was born and brought up in Bihar for 20 years before my parents shifted to the south. I started my acting career with television and it took me some time to establish my credentials in Tamil films. In fact, there was a time when Tamilians would often complain about my Tamil language skills. Did you have apprehensions that Kangana would walk away with the accolades considering that she is playing a double role in the film and also won the recent National Award for Queen? Kangana is no doubt a brilliant actor, she is spontaneous and has the ability to challenge her co-stars but I was at no point insecure that she would take away all the accolades. I am a hero and I invariably get the chance to be the lion in every film. Apart from that, we all look at the film in totality. It’s not about which actor scores over the other. Actors like

Kamal Hassan and Rajnikant don’t hit sixers. They want the scenes to work and the film to do well. Tanu Weds Manu Returns discusses the issue of marital relationships. What do you think is the key to a long-lasting marriage? I think mutual respect is important for any relationship to succeed. There are ups and downs in every marriage but you need to accept them and move on in life. Whether it’s a love marriage or an arranged marriage, you have to try and keep the marriage going. Women’s liberation movements also have their own point of view but that does not mean that you go through divorce. What is your personal view on life after marriage? For me, marriage has been a fascinating experience all the way. When I was unmarried, I didn’t care a damn about the world. I had no one to share my success. I saw the expression on my wife’s success when I made it as a hero. I can never forget that. www.visionasia.co.nz | June 2015 29

I generally don’t prefer to do my south remakes in Hindi

Coming to your career, none of your Tamil remakes in Hindi have you in the lead. Is it out of choice or out of compulsion? I generally don’t prefer to do my south remakes in Hindi. I get bored easily and I don’t like to go into that emotional journey again. I did want to do Run but it didn’t happen. Later, Saathiya was also made in Hindi but the role went to Viveik Oberoi. That was followed by my Tamil film Vetti, which also went to someone else. On the other hand, I did do 3 Idiots in Hindi but the Tamil remake which is now being made has another actor in it. Don’t you think three years is a long time not to have a release at the box-office? I decided to lie low on the Hindi film front and took a break because I felt I was repeating myself. It was getting monotonous and my wife too echoed the same sentiment. I had already earned a name and I was not hungry for roles. I wanted to do something out of the box. In the intervening period, I also came across an interesting subject, which is now being made into a film called Saala Khadoos. Apparently Saala Khadoos also marks your production debut in Hindi films. What’s the film all about? I am producing the film along with Rajkumar Hirani. Raju loved the subject of the film and he decided to co-produce it. I am playing a boxing coach in the film. It’s an interesting film and I will reveal more about it when it releases. Do you feel the audience is open to such films? It’s a smart phone generation today and you certainly can’t take them for granted. They are always looking for something new. There are many actors on television 30 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

who have six pack abs, dance and act well and are far more handsome than I am. That doesn’t mean that they can all become heroes. You have to work hard towards your role. Is there any dream role that you would like to play? I would like to play the role of an Indian superhero someday. After Krrish, there has not been a film based on an Indian superhero. By S. Bhagat

NUMEROSCOPE

Star birthdays and the year ahead Ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts what the future holds in store for Arjun Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor on the eve of their 30th birthdays.

SONAM KAPOOR

Her numbers Born on 9th June, 1985, Sonam Kapoor is a Number 9 (Mars) person in numerology also ruled by Number 5 (Gemini-ruling planet Mercury). Her destiny number adds up to Number 2 (Moon). Since she is ruled by Number 2, she is automatically ruled by Number 7 (Ketu) as these two numbers always go hand in hand. Her personality Her numbers indicate that Sonam Kapoor is a sociable and carefree person, a great optimist and has no qualms voicing her unconventional ideas. She is also someone who does not get easily demoralized. What the year ahead has in store for her Sonam will now be entering her 31st year which indicates a just about okay phase ahead of her. After receiving a cold response for her last release Dolly Ki Dolly, her next biggie with Salman Khan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will break all box-office records, but much of the credit for the film’s success will go to Salman and director Sooraj Barjatya. Remedies to beat the blues As far as her name vibration is concerned, it adds up to Number 47 which is a deceptive octave of Number 2. As a result, she might enter in to a relationship with a guy who may not be faithful to her. Ideally she should spell her name as SONAMM KAPOOR to avoid any heart breaks in the future. Wearing an emerald and a pearl on a Monday and Wednesday respectively on her smallest fingers of different hands set in silver, will speed up her wheel of fortune and help in fighting stress and attaining peace. 32 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

ARJUN KAPOOR

His numbers Arjun was born on 26th June, 1985 which makes him a Number 8 (Saturn) person in numerology. His sun sign is a Cancer (Moon and Ketu ruled by numbers 2 and 7) and his destiny number adds up to Number 1 (Sun). His personality Arjun Kapoor’s numbers make him a practical, confident and realistic person who is perfectly aware of his limitations and pursues his goals accordingly. On the other hand, he is an inherent ability for organizational skills and goes about doing everything in a planned manner. What the year ahead has in store for him Arjun will now enter his 31st year which indicates a cautionary phase ahead personally, professionally and financially too. With no release on hand, he will be pretty much shooting for his upcoming projects which mainly includes director R.Balki’s next. Talking about his personal life, it is best for him to lie low for some time as it will only create much in his life. On the financial front too, he is likely to make a few bad investments and should be very careful with money matters. Any unnecessary and frivolous expenses must be avoided. Remedies to beat the blues Wearing a Ruby on his ring finger to be set in gold will prevent him from getting in to misunderstandings with people who matter and also maintain cordial relations with others. www.bhavikksangghvi.com

BEHIND THE SCENES

I always look for

powerful

stories for my films He is a celebrated filmmaker who has left an indelible impression on the minds of audiences with each of his films. From the intense Khamoshi to the thoughtprovoking and poignant Black, the vibrant and colourful Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and his more recent production, Mary Kom, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is uncompromising about his dedication to filmmaking. His Mary Kom received a National Award after which he was recently accorded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award for his achievement in making. Vision Asia caught up with the director to get his take on his career, success, rejection and what he felt about awards. www.visionasia.co.nz | June 2015 33

BEHIND THE SCENES

After 24 years of my career, it’s a fulfilling emotion to receive an award like Padma Shri

How does it to feel to receive a prestigious award like Padma Shri? Do you feel that you have finally got your due in filmmaking? It is a big achievement for me and I am delighted. It also indicates a very respectful acknowledgement of my work. Besides, it has been a while since I received any award. The last time I got an award was for Black. From the year 1994 when I first worked on the songs of 1942 till date, my career has gone from strength to strength. After 24 years of my career, it’s a fulfilling emotion. It is also special because it is by the government. There is no bias and lobbying here.

34 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

What would you like to say about the fact that your films haven’t surfaced in the popular awards lists? I think Black got the maximum number of Filmfare awards, even putting films like Devdas and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge behind. From what I know, popular awards have certain criteria and the people associated with those awards also have a certain agenda. I had expected Mary Kom and Priyanka Chopra to feature in the list but it did not happen. I cannot say that all awards are biased but it is a well-known fact that every industry has its own share of politics. When I directed Guzaarish, I did not get an award but I had expected that Hrithik Roshan’s name would certainly figure

BEHIND THE SCENES

I had no problems when Kangana won all the awards for Queen because she deserved it but Priyanka also deserved them

in the awards list. I had no problems when Kangana won all the awards for Queen because she deserved it but Priyanka deserved it too. She had worked hard on her role in Mary Kom. You are considered an institution in filmmaking in the industry. How do you cope up with rejection? Khamoshi was my biggest rejection till date. It was one of the biggest films during that point of time but the film failed miserably at the box office. Nana’s fans were upset because he had no dialogues. I and my sister Bela, who had also edited the film, went to the theatres to gauge the audience reactions and we were shattered to see the number of people sitting in some of the theatres. I accepted the reality and that’s how it has always been. You recently produced the Akshay Kumar starrer, Gabbar Is Back, which revolves around the subject of corruption. What is your take on corruption in real life? I think corruption has been rampant in our country for a long time and now it’s a crime too. We need to change our mindsets if we have to get rid of it. I made Gabbar… because I wanted to explore the idea of the best way to fight corruption. I have been in the industry for more than 20 years and I have seen so much corruption around. The good part is that people are discussing about it and asking questions. How was your experience working with Akshay for the second time post Rowdy Rathore? Akshay is an action icon in his own right and a fabulous actor too. Post Rowdy Rathore when we were thinking of making Gabbar…, Akshay was the first choice for the role. He is a very dedicated and professional actor and has strong moral principles. That is the reason why he has survived for so long in the industry.

Your heroines are beautiful and invariably have a strong character and personality. Is that the way you always like to portray them? I always look for powerful stories for my films. My actresses are charismatic and when the characters are beautiful, they look even more beautiful on screen. Priyanka looked so good in Mary Kom without makeup. Rani Mukherjee looked the very best in Black. There have been other filmmakers who have portrayed their heroines wonderfully on screen. When you looked at Vaijayantimala in Sangam, Dimple Kapadia in Bobby or even Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, you felt like looking at them eternally. Bimal Roy’s heroines also looked beautiful on screen. So I think it is the director’s vision to represent his heroines beautifully on screen. Who is your biggest critic? I am my biggest critic. I analyse everything I do. I think it is very important to assess your ability and strengths and weaknesses from time to time. As a producer and director, I do criticise my own work. I also try to find out why I don’t like my own work. The intensity of love and emotions in your films is very strong but it seems to be missing in your personal life. Comment. When you create something, it is a reflection of areas in your life that are incomplete. It makes you more passionate about pursuing that area. If you see my films, you will observe that they all have certain incompleteness towards the end. I haven’t reached that state of completion yet and I guess it will remain so. Once the box has been disconnected from its power supply, it should remain so for at least 15 minutes. Once the reboot is complete and the decoder box is on again, the service should resume. If not, there are a few other things that need to be checked: 1. All of the cables behind the decoder box should be plugged in firmly. There is either an HDMI or an RCA cable connecting the box to the television, a satellite cable connecting the box to the

Satellite dish and a power cable that plugs into a power point. 2. Make sure that the box is switched on. Try the button on the decoder box itself and also the power button on the remote control. INTERVIEW

I am well aware of the

nuances of acting

It’s too personal to reveal my negative traits, so let’s keep it a secret 42 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

INTERVIEW

I was an obese kid and my parents wanted me to lose all the puppy fat and become a hero

From being a distinguished producerdirector to hosting a talk show, judging a reality show and dancing on the small screen, Karan Johar has made a success of all his endeavours. The latest on his front is his recent acting debut in a negative role with Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet. In a conversation, the filmmaker talks about his roles, his films and his journey in Bollywood.

What was your first reaction when Anurag Kashyap offered you the negative role in Bombay Velvet? When Anurag narrated the script and told me about the role of Khambatta, I literally fell off the chair. This character has no redemption. He has got a negative streak and celebrates everything that is bad in life. He also manipulates people and uses them to his advantage. To think of me in such a negative role was very much out of the box. I also had other reservations. The first time I did a look test and wore a moustache, I wasn’t too happy about my look. I agreed to wear it only when I felt that I distantly resembled my father in the look. Also, I found it difficult to wear a moustache and

act. I wore it for three consecutive days to get accustomed to it. Do you think the role showcased a different side to your personality? I am a Geminian and I have two personalities in real life too. The character in the film is completely opposite to the kind of person that I am in real life. It was a challenging experience for me. Everyone knows about your good side, what are your negative traits? It’s too personal to reveal my negative traits, so let’s keep it a secret. You will always get two for the price of one. You will never really know who I am.

Did you always have an acting streak in you? When I was 15, my parents wanted to groom me as an actor. I was an obese kid and my parents wanted me to lose all the puppy fat and become a hero. I never quite took my parents opinion seriously. I did act in plays but always felt that my place was behind the camera. Nevertheless I did bag a role in a serial called Indradhanush. I had completed my ICSE exams and the director Anand Mahendroo wanted an overweight child for the show. Since I was plump and obese, my mother immediately sent me for the auditions. I played the role of a young boy who invents a computer in the serial, which was later aired on Doordarshan. www.visionasia.co.nz | June 2015 43

INTERVIEW

Anand later told me that the guy’s name was Shah Rukh Khan and he was playing an important role in another serial, Fauji

Did you find the experience inspiring? It was a one off role but it gave me an opportunity to interact with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time. When I went to director Anand Mahendroo’s suburban office, I saw a good-looking guy who was busy solving cross-word puzzles and gulping down several cups of tea. By the time Anand Mahendroo came out after five hours, this guy had 20 cups of tea and even finished the cross-word puzzle. The moment he saw the director, he went up to him and told him clearly that he would be unable to do the serial. He also thanked him for the tea and told him that he enjoyed solving the crossword. Anand later told me that the guy’s name was Shah Rukh Khan and he was playing an important role in another serial, Fauji. Many years later when I was on the sets of Duplicate with my father, I introduced myself to Shah Rukh Khan once again. How easy or difficult was it to get into the mode of acting after all these years? I have seen Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol acting in front of me and I am well aware of the nuances of acting. When I did Student of the Year I learnt a lot of acting as I had to teach the actors to enact every scene. They were first time actors and I trained them. Are you feeling pressurized about living up to expectations as an actor? I am not worried about living up to expectations. I am enjoying my work. If people like it I will be happy. If my acting is not appreciated I will go back to writing , producing and directing films and host realty shows and dance and do talk shows too. What was your mom’s reaction to your role? She was horrified when she saw the film though she told me that she was just “pleasantly surprised.” She is worried that the whole experience of acting shouldn’t go to my head. She always analyses things objectively and points out to me if tells me what’s wrong with me. Because she feels 44 June 2015 | www.visionasia.co.nz

what’s right the world will tell you. She is happy and proud of me. Somewhere she is the mother also. Who are the villains in the industry that you have always admired? I never admired any of the villains; it was always the heroes and heroines. One cannot deny the fact that we have had a lot of prolific actors in the industry like Pran, Amrish Puri. On the other hand, Danny Denzongpa was the coolest villain. These days the heroes are doing villainous characters too. It all depends on the body language. You have produced and directed films, hosted a talk show, been a judge and now you have turned an actor. What else do you plan to do in the future? I want to do more films. I have many stories to narrate. I am more excited as a filmmaker. I also want to get into television but time is a major limitation. I want to expand my company. Cinema is an endless medium and there’s so much to do. Why aren’t you directing films? When you produce a film you are focussed and you can mentor people. There are 13 directors in Dharma Productions. I have to release their films and it takes a lot of time. I think it’s time I started directing films again but I’ll have to finish my backlog of work before that. When are we going to see you work with Shah Rukh Khan? I don’t know. Everyone keeps asking me this question. Shah Rukh is currently busy with Fan, Dilwale and Raees. When we have the script we will do a film at the right time. There was a lot of criticism about the AIB roast and you playing a prominent role of an anchor in it. Do you feel the incident has affected your image? It was meant to be a fun event but it was taken very seriously. Since the matter is sub judice, I can’t speak much. I felt hurt when

everybody pointed out to my mother who was at the event. They were curious to know why I took my mother there. She is my mother and it’s her prerogative. She’s a cool mother and she enjoyed the show. I don’t think my image has been affected. Every person has an opinion and we all have a right to express what we feel. However, I will not do a similar show again simply because I don’t want to get into the legal hassles. I am here to do movies. By S. Bhagat

If my acting is not appreciated I will go back to writing, producing and directing films

FACE TO FACE

He is a man of few words but Irrfan Khan invariably leaves a mark with his intense, thought-provoking performances on screen. The unconventional actor recently took the audiences by surprise with his romantic role in Piku. In a brief encounter, Irrfan opened up about his latest film, his choice of roles and his inspiration in life, besides the excitement of meeting Hollywood star Tom Hanks. Piku gave me a unique opportunity to explore my potential in a romantic role. I always wanted to try out a romantic film and this film seemed to be ideal to explore a romantic role. Prior to this, I did Lunch Box which was also a love story except that the two protagonists in the film do not meet each other. I like to experiment with diverse roles on screen though filmmakers generally tend to cast me in a particular slot. Apart from that, I always get deeply connected to my characters. Among the characters that I found most inspiring were those in Namesake and Pan Singh Tomar. The two characters left a lasting impression on my mind. The best part about working in Piku was teaming up with Amitabh Bachchan. It was a delight working with him. He is like a student who gives his 200 percent to everything he does. He puts in his heart and soul in the role and goes about doing it with remarkable integrity and conviction. Few actors and stars have this kind of an attitude to work. He is an institution by himself and has a remarkable mastery over the art. When I went on the sets and saw him rehearsing I was excited. In fact, I was stunned when I learnt that he was equally conversant with my dialogues in the film. Piku was a rewarding experience for another reason. I got to romance Deepika in the film and I think I got more than I desired for. It was initially difficult striking the chemistry with Deepika but over a period of time, we struck a perfect rapport with each other. Deepika maintains a fine balance between professionalism and her friendly approach towards her co-stars. She is also a talented actor in her own right. When you have a

competent actor in front of you, you can be relaxed in the feeling that you can do a wonderful job together. I do take up roles in Hindi films that I find inspiring but honestly speaking, I am not a keen follower of Hindi films. I only watch those Hindi films where I know I will not end up wasting my time and mind. Among the few Hindi films I liked was Finding Fanny. Among the English films that I really enjoyed watching was Birdman. I saw the film twice in order to understand it properly. In the film, Michael Keaton has taken his audiences on a convincing journey. I feel sad he didn’t get an Oscar for the film. I also liked the American television series, True Detective. I am really enjoying my stint in Hollywood There’s a huge difference between Bollywood and Hollywood filmmakers in the approach towards filmmaking. Our films revolve around stars where as the story is the focal point of their films. Among my Hollywood projects, I have a great admiration and respect for Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurrasic World. He is new but he already has a deep understanding of the technique of filmmaking. His transition from a small film, Safety Not Guaranteed to big films like Jurassic World has been fantastic. I also shared a great rapport with Tom Hanks when we met for the initial shoot of Inferno. Besides being a renowned actor in his own right, Tom is also a very affable person with a great sense of humor. He is also spirited and is eternally brimming with ideas. I met him in Budapest where I had gone to prepare for my role in the film.

We did some rehearsals on the costumes and discussed the script and it was great interacting with him. Tom was eager to know about the tigers in Life Of Pie. On the other hand, I was keen to find out how he shot for Insurgents. The two of us will be shooting in June and I am eagerly looking forward to working with him. My days at the theatre and my drama school have played a significant role in my acting career. That period in the late 80s influenced me a lot. Those were the formative years in my acting career. Later it was my good luck and the choices I made that made a difference to my career. Like other actor, I too have made mistakes and faltered at some stages in my career but I have never harped on them. I have always believed in taking one step at a time and I advise my children the same.

I only watch those Hindi films where I know I will not end up wasting my time and mind www.visionasia.co.nz | June 2015 47
