Thinning Down
in the New Year by Marlene Buffa new calendar year urges us to set new intentions for the coming 12 months. Often playful, sometimes serious, these resolutions allow us to focus on what we hope to accomplish as we ponder the possibilities we map out for ourselves. Faced with a pencil and blank sheet of paper, we look up towards the ceiling as we strive to articulate our dreams, aspirations and adventures for the coming year. One popular goal is to lose weight—from striving to lower that number on the scale to shedding the thoughts, beliefs and circumstances that block us from becoming who we truly are. Thinning Out From people who no longer empower us to bad habits and needless possessions, we consciously make decisions for our new year by thinning out the herd of our lives. Forgiving, removing and releasing the old worn out patterns speaks loudly as a resolution for change. No matter what you choose to discard in your life, it all points to your spiritual center, what you allow—or don’t allow—to affect you in your world. With the cacophony of society rising every year, our culture demands more and more of our attention to both the subtle nuances of life, as well as the clanging cymbals (symbols) of reality. While we cannot control what life puts in our path, we hold the power to determine our reactions. By thinning out that which negates our highest life experience, we declare our focus and intention to live fully within what matters.

Thin skinned We’re human. We take things personally. We allow the microscopic disturbances of life to permeate our spirit and burrow into our very being. Absorbing the positive and negative components swimming around us, we lack the filters necessary to differentiate between that which empowers us and that which may harm us. Differentiating between toughening and thickening the barrier of our spirit to prevent the invasion of negativity offers a vital challenge. While our perceptions may bring us understanding and acknowledgement about what we choose to admit into our consciousness, thickness (or depth) still provides an interaction between the world around us and our inner selves. If we toughen up, we no longer observe the potential good—or bad—in our lives; we simply construct a defensive barrier to all new ideas, thereby denying the gift of growth in the process. The essential lesson is what happens outside of us need not be incorporated into our spirit. A new calendar year presents opportunities for growth and for thinning out your life. Return to the basics of your nature. Acknowledge who you are and proudly display your unique qualities. Keep those people, objects and attitudes that empower and bolster your journey. And finally, know what to absorb and what to repel when the energies around you appear as a challenging opportunity for growth! Taking a quiet sideways glance at life, Marlene Buffa offers insight through her words and experiences. A student of new-thought teachings, Marlene finds practical spirituality around every corner and seeks wisdom through observation of life’s interrelationships. Visit her at wordsofmind.com.

A Spiritual Rebel’s Rant by Patrice Karst
O
ver 40 years ago, I began my spiritual journey as a little girl in England, longing to understand the mysteries of the Cosmos. This was long before there was a new age, metaphysical, organic, green, yogic, self-help movement where “being spiritual” would become more like a fashion statement or a hobby—something to check in the “Things I Like” box. Back in the day, that magical journey down the rabbit hole that describes the mystical path, the search for the Divine, and the awakening of Higher Consciousness had incredibly little to do with what we could “manifest.” It wasn’t about what we could get. It was about something…well, deeper. Look, it’s a beautiful thing to witness the shifting of the masses. The fact that spirituality has become the new mainstream means that we are headed in the right direction—and thank God for that. It’s just that this watered down, sugary sweet, “holier than you” façade of being spiritual because it’s hip makes me cringe as it plays itself out in ways that seem competitive and insincere. Take Facebook for example and posts like, “I am living in gratitude today for the oneness of the light and the blessings all around me in the now and in the heart of my being…” or “Ready, aim, higher!!!!” All of this spiritual correctness is whitewashed, generic, tired and ultimately boring. There’s no spice or personality. I like that in a person—a personality. We’re missing the whole point with this rampant spiritual egotism, pride and arrogance. We all need some humility and we need it fast. Study the lives of all the great saints and you’ll see that most of them suffered emotional pain in their longing for the Divine. They were indeed (shudder to imagine) feeling just a tad bit negative. Somehow that makes me feel better. Because lo and behold! I also suffer—and sometimes a lot. And news flash—so do we all because we are, in fact, human. Humans feel. And we are beautiful within all of that feeling. Since when did being real become un-spiritual? And when did sadness become less holy than joy? Yet these days we are told over and over that we are somehow being spiritually incorrect if we do anything other than follow some generically prescribed happyno-matter-what façade. I see so many masks, so many costumes, and so many disguises. And all of this “positivity” has resulted in a lot of folks feeling very much alone. We have not been truthful. And it is tragic. I’ll admit it. I’ve always been a bit of a radical, the gal who feels the need to V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
bring the elephant in the living room to light and call the emperor out as naked. I am the one who sends food back in a restaurant when it sucks and speaks up in a meeting if no one else does—even if it will make me unpopular or make things slightly uncomfortable for a moment until the unnamed emotionally-charged collective zit bursts and everyone finally gets to breathe again. Frankly, I wouldn’t feel the need to do it so often or so intensely if more of my brothers and sisters on the path would just take up the baton and run with it. I wait, often until the last possible second, silently praying that just this one time, someone will thrill me and speak the heck up! And sometimes, to my utter delight, they do. My everyday heroes are those brave, wondrous and therefore interesting people who have a voice—an authentic one that they dare to use. My heroes are those who bless us all with their willingness to tell us the truths of their lives. Even the ugly parts—especially the ugly parts—whether their voices are heard in a book, a film or at the deli. Spiritual heroes have cajones. They are generous of spirit. They share their honesty, and therefore, their souls. That’s what heroes do—they share. They don’t answer, “I’m fine and you?” when they’re sad, scared or lonely and they are the truest spiritual teachers that exist. They’ll never be criticized for not “walking their talk” because their talk is for real. Nor will they ever come crashing down from grace because they never put themselves on any self-imposed pedestal to begin with. Ultimately, all we can ever really offer our fellow travelers upon this confusing, brilliant, spinning planet, is our truth—all of it—who we are, what we stand for, what we really believe and yes, what we feel as we dance or stumble through our lives. Buddha said, “There are three things that can’t be hidden for long, the sun, the moon, and the truth.” In the end, being real matters. h o l i s t i c l i v i n g Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, CA, believes that “prevention is eating an antiinflammatory diet rich in greens and whole grains and exercising.” Each of us can use our personal power to assist the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Below are several complimentary alternative therapies that, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, may purify, nourish and support the immune system naturally. Liver Support and Purification Your liver has over 500 functions and may have more to do with your energy, vitality, attitudes, and emotions than you think. As your body’s main detoxifying organ, your liver is your first line of defense. The barrage of toxins we’re exposed to these days is unprecedented; there are approximately 75,000 chemicals now in use in the United States and fewer than 3 percent have been tested for carcinogenicity, according to an independent study conducted by Biotics Research Corporation. Consequently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported nearly 30 cancer-causing chemicals in the fatty tissue of most Americans today. Your liver is more than just an organ. It’s critical to the health, vitality and joy you experience on a daily basis and its purification is essential to achieving the best possible health. The Lymphatic System: The Key to Immunity Affecting every cell and organ in the body, the lymphatic system is the terrain in which our immune system functions. It is the filter and delivery system in the body and is vital in the elimination of toxins, as well as delivering nutrients and oxygen to the cells. The lymph system has no pump; as a result, the 600 lymph nodes, or filters, congest over the years with bacteria and blood proteins due to stress and lack of exercise. Decongestive lymphatic therapy is a whole body approach. It is highly effective in the permanent reduction of cellulite, weight loss, prostate care, breast

hen we think of a hero, we may envision someone strong and exceptionally courageous. An illustrious warrior, a hero is frequently painted as an invincible person who will change the world. In truth, our heroes often endure hardship and resistance, to teach valuable lessons about survival and self-reliance. Today, I invite you to become your own hero by taking responsibility for your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Begin by recognizing all that you are grateful for. Next, contemplate what isn’t working or is not in alignment with who you are. How many of these circumstances are connected to your health and wellbeing? When 95 percent of healthcare costs in this country goes toward treating illness, it’s apparent that we each need to turn our focus on health and prevention. However, truly integrating prevention into our lifestyles will require seismic shifts in our way of thinking about health and the stewardship of our own bodies. Vibrant wellness and vitality is our birthright. Now you can learn simple secrets to purify and restore your cellular and overall health. As integrative-medical pioneer Andrew Weil, MD, told the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions a year ago, “The time has come for a new paradigm of preventive medicine and a society-wide effort to educate our citizens about health and selfcare.” It has been widely cited that Americans consume about three million pounds of antibiotics every year. Also overwhelming our bodies is the impact of stress and pollution. Creating optimal wellness can be as simple as incorporating healthy habits into our daily lifestyles. An Interview with Bliss Music Therapy Founder, Davida Price by A.C. Workman

kay, show of hands — who among us hasn’t, after a really crappy day at the jay-oh-bee, cranked up the radio to full blast, and then let it all loose when “our song” comes on? Right. I thought so. Because on some level, we all—every last one of us— understand that music has this innate, almost magical ability to heal what ails us. There are a handful of people out there who definitely understand and appreciate the immensely therapeutic nature of music—music therapists. San Diego’s own Davida Price is a stellar example. After receiving extensive training in music, as well as marriage and family therapy, Price chose to intertwine her skills through Bliss Music Therapy, which focuses on helping children and adolescents who have suffered varying degrees of trauma. She uses drums, guitars, ukuleles—just about anything that will make a pretty noise—to reach people who may not be receptive to traditional talk therapy. I connected with her about a year ago, when I contacted her to lend support to a children’s event that I was hosting. After explaining exactly what I was doing and why, not only did Price agree to come and lead a drum circle, she also waived her fee (although I encourage anyone with means to compensate her generously for her services, as I’m sure mama’s got bills to pay). I was deeply moved by her generosity of spirit. So, a year later, when I learned Vision Magazine was doing an issue on everyday heroes, guess who came to mind? Vision Magazine: First things first. I guess I should start with the obvious, but maybe not-so-obvious question. Why music? Davida Price: Obviously, music affects everyone on multiple levels, so one can

only imagine the possible benefits of using music in health and healing. What’s not so obvious though is that music has been clinically proven to affect the chemistry of the brain and body. Engaging in music-making can improve one’s mood by stimulating the pleasure center of the brain and improve the immune system by stimulating the production of T-cells. It can also be a social experience, stimulating the release of oxytocin in the brain, which encourages bonding between humans, thereby improving relationships (if only every family had a drum circle after dinner!). VM: You’ve used your music to promote peace with a project called Peace Through Music Uganda. What was that experience like for you and for the children in the program? DP: That was a very powerful experience. The enthusiasm for learning how to play an instrument spread like wildfire. I’d never seen so many kids wanting so badly to learn how to play an instrument. The program has continued to grow through the tremendous efforts of the Shropshire Music Foundation. Over the past three years, through participation in this ongoing program, children have overcome their trauma (from war or being a child soldier), and have found purpose in their lives. VM: I know that music therapy has been used to promote healing in autism, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients. What other potential uses are there for music therapy and where do you see the field going in the next few years? DP: If you think about it, those are all very different populations and each touch on an area where music is effective. For children with autism, music is used to influence behavior and social skills, whereas for individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease, music is used to maintain cognitive and physical functioning (memory recall through lyrics and muscle tone by playing an instrument). With Parkinson’s patients, music is used more for its rhythm to improve and maintain bilateral functioning and gait. Music therapy is moving quickly in the direction of music neuroscience. Recent bestsellers including This is Your Brain on Music, by Daniel Levitin, or Musicophilia, by Oliver Sacks, both offer the effect music has on the brain to a wider audience. As we learn more about the brain and its functioning, we will be able to apply music more effectively for use in healthcare, including the field of mental health. VM: Can you tell us about your experience in hosting a community drum circle in San Diego?

in the first place. And they didn’t identify too closely with the designation, much less cultivate the image of being heroic. They did what they did and they let others worry about affi xing titles. In short, everyday heroes are the extraordinary men and women who on a daily basis do all the ordinary things that keep our world from spinning off its axis. They toil diligently, anonymously, and far too often for wages that are woefully inadequate. It is my sincere hope that you ignore them for as long as you possibly can or at least not pay them too much attention. Here’s why. Have you ever heard of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle? Yeah, me neither. But I think that anyone who studies it qualifies as a hero; broadly speaking, it posits that there is no way to study something because the second you observe it, you change all the conditions you are trying to measure. As applied to modern-day heroes, the attention they receive often results in the acid rain of fame drenching them in their own good deeds. And for my money, there is no greater corrosive than that. So if a hero’s continued success lies in the silence of our collective response, I am not going to inflict fame’s song on them. I will give them no more than a passing nod, a pat on the back, and let them continue on their valiant way. Oddly enough, that may be as close as I get to being a hero. etaphorically, I was born Greek. As such, I am the bastard offspring of the unholy union of Contradiction and Conflict. I was weaned on the bittersweet milk of irony, and my lungs breathed deep the oxygen of oxymoron. But when I am offered the seeming feast of incongruent expression that is “everyday heroes,” I gag and splutter. Though the very idea of a hero is rooted in ancient Greek mythology, I am handcuffed by the prospect of anyone attaining hero status on a daily basis. I know that things change. I am also aware that shit happens. Can it be any wonder, then, that as things happen, shit changes? Let us attend. I remember when being a hero meant dressing in colorful clothing that clung tightly to a well-muscled frame. Let’s call this era my early childhood. So great was my interest in all things heroic back then that I sought to become one, too. I recruited a friend who shared my passion for a life of gallantry. We gathered our tools—capes and shields, though in our case, we had to settle for beach towels with safety pins and dented garbage can lids—and set out for greatness. We were Captain America and his sidekick Bucky. But our plan was unceremoniously derailed when some neighborhood rivals thought we were Batman and Robin; when we corrected them, they responded that they had never heard of Captain America and that the only Bucky they knew was really some kid named Carl. Demoralized, we surrendered our costumes, along with our desire for superherodom. My relationship with earthbound heroes never really took form either. My admiration for them always manifested as wanting to be one, so that when I had the rare chance to meet someone who actually qualified as a hero, I choked. Once, when I was 10, I stood in line for two hours to meet Dick Butkus, a childhood icon because he could lift grown men off of their feet and hurl them to the ground. When I finally got to the table where he was seated, all I wanted was for him to tell me how I could get to be as big as him—he was 6’3” and 240 lbs—I was barely five feet tall and weighed a quarter of what Butkus did. When he told me all I had to do was to eat and exercise, I felt deceived. No amount of Manwich or push-ups was going to result in my becoming anything even remotely like him. Crushed, my concept of heroes downshifted dramatically. They became people within my immediate sphere of life, doing things that were much more readily attainable, if somewhat reflective of my preadolescent mind. The most brilliant example was a classmate of mine, Willard Mudd. He could belch on cue, which, though admirable, was short of superhuman. What was staggering was his ability to ingest cafeteria spinach, half-swallow it, and then shoot it out of his nose. I know you’re thinking that I mistook genius for heroics, but there wasn’t a dull Wednesday floating listlessly in the middle of a nowhere week that wasn’t saved by the derring-do of a boy whose name was synonymous with wet dirt. Then, inexplicably, the notion of becoming a hero left me entirely, only to resurface years later with a keen interest in what made a hero a hero. Traits like bravery and selflessness were obvious inclusions. But what intrigued me more was not so much what went into being a hero as much as what a potential hero didn’t do. They didn’t lie, for one. Especially about the actions that put them in the spotlight

Ask the LifeQuake™ Doctor Dr. Toni Galardi

s we embark upon the completion of the opening decade of the second millennium, I urge you to take the first two weeks of 2010 to reflect back on the last nine years and write about what you have learned. Where were you in your consciousness at the turn of the century and where are you now? What have you mastered and what still scares you? The subject of addiction since the death of Michael Jackson and the revelation of Tiger Woods’ behavior has provided an opportunity for us all to look at what substances, thoughts, and beliefs we ourselves are addicted to. Dear Dr. Toni: I am a 47-year-old executive and I’ve been married to a woman I love for 10 years. Ever since the Tiger Woods story broke, I have been questioning myself as to whether I am a sex addict. I don’t have a bunch of mistresses, but I do spend at least three cumulative hours a day at work looking at porn on the Internet. I am not having an affair with any real live women but something tells me that this isn’t kosher. I was eating lunch in my favorite restaurant near my office when I picked up this magazine and started reading your column. You seem to know something about addiction so I decided to write you. Should I be worried? Is the mere watching of porn without my wife’s knowledge a problem? And do you qualify to be a sex addict if you are having sex with yourself? John L. Dear John: The greatest thing about celebrities being busted for addiction issues is that it really opens up a dialogue about forbidden subjects. Inherent in what makes addiction so destructive is the secrecy it often entails. This brings me to you and your wife. The first step in healing any addiction is admitting you have a problem. As long as your wife is in the dark, there is most likely some shame you have about this behavior.

What makes this sex addiction is not the presence of a real woman, but the absence of honesty. Having sex with yourself is not the issue. Spending three leisurely hours on the Internet during a workday indicates that you are not passionate about your work and are displacing that need for professional passion through a sexual release. I encourage you to work with a career coach and/or an addiction therapist who can assist you in getting to the root of this compulsion and explore the feelings you are avoiding through sheer pleasure seeking. It might also lead to marital counseling to rebuild the intimacy in your relationship that may have been lost through this addiction. Dear Dr. Toni: As the year closes, I have been thinking about my life. I know they say that in order to change your life you need to have a new vision of it. I am not a visual person and am having trouble seeing myself inside new circumstances. I contracted an illness as a child that rendered me visually impaired. It has been a hard road but I want to change my belief that my life is doomed to never have a relationship. I would like next year to be different for me. Your thoughts? James H. Dear James: Rest assured, James. There are many people who do not process life visually. There are three dominant modes of taking in the world: visually, auditorially, and kinesthetically. People who are predominantly auditory tune into the world through their ears. We see this in musicians or people who have visual impairments. If you process through your hearing, you will listen for messages in how people speak or how your own intuition comes to you. If this is your dominant mode, perhaps the way to experience a new possibility for 2010 is to listen to CDs from people like Eckhart Tolle, Caroline Myss, Deepak Chopra or my own that is called The LifeQuake Method. If you are a music lover, listen to your favorite songs and let them inspire you to hear yourself six months from now telling a friend about all the changes you’ve made in your life since the beginning of the year. This begins to override the old program. If you are kinesthetic, you process your world through your body. You feel your perceptions on a sensory level. If this is your dominant mode, you might try noticing what experiences in your day-to-day life feel uplifting or energizing. Keep a running list for three weeks and then begin to replicate those experiences more often every day. When you think about changing your life in 2010, think about all of the experiences you have had in your life that brought the feelings you want to have in this new year. Spend five minute a day remembering them and allowing for those feelings to be felt as intensely as possible. Dr. Toni Galardi is a psychotherapist, career coach, public speaker, and author of The LifeQuake Phenomenon: How to Thrive Not Just Survive in Times of Personal and Global Upheaval. BIRTH When the Spiritual a n d t h e Ma t er i a l Co m e To ge t h er by Shari Arison

ike a researcher who dedicates his or her life to an effort to heal illnesses or discover new stars, I see myself as a researcher. A researcher of the self. My research deals with consciousness, essence, and the discovery of new ways to reach them. There are countless paths for learning the lessons of life, and I have walked on many of them. Some of them are rocky and hard, some have many traffic lights, and some are like highways. All of these paths have ultimately led me to myself. Everything that we see around us is, in essence, a reflection of something within us. We can no longer take from one another. We can no longer exploit the Earth’s resources and think that there will be no consequences—because if there’s no planet, there’s no bottom line. I believe that every business integrating true and genuine values, including giving to those in need, will profit in the long run. Many years ago, I tried to understand what my calling was and arrived each time at the same answer: world peace. To achieve peace in the world, we must achieve peace within ourselves and with our surroundings. Peace begins within. Today, I believe that I do indeed have a mission in this world, a mission to lead
m i n d s t a t e s and to guide. Not out of vanity and not from political aspiration—but out of the understanding that I have the tools to bring change to the world, and that I have the ability to envision this change, to see the vision of the new world, and to influence people. And that I can use my personal example to show the way. Through The Arison Group, I have set up a variety of charitable organizations and sustainable companies. For example, The Essence of Life organization works to arouse awareness and provide tools for attaining inner peace, running websites in Hebrew and English, an Internet radio station, workshops, and an interactive visitors center designed for both children and adults. I also initiated the annual Good Deeds Day, in which everyone is called upon to do one good deed for someone else (even giving a genuine smile is a good deed). The next Good Deeds Day will be March 16, 2010, and I truly hope that we can turn this day into an international event. If we want to see a better world, each one of us must do his or her best to make it happen by helping one another. I’m not talking about the sort of help that causes dependency. Rather, it’s about providing the kind of help that leads to independence. It is possible to give back to the community, to inspire the spirit of giving in all of us through everything we do—personal matters, business, philanthropy—in every aspect of our lives. We all have a stake in our community as much as we do in our own spirits and seeking avenues of generosity is the direct path to peace among us. “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others? ” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
E
xcitement filled the brisk winter air as I hurried toward the voices rising in the night, louder and louder: “What do we want? Peace! When do we want it? Now! ” The passion was contagious; I found myself chanting along while the cars whizzing by honked in support. The protest was being held in front of Congresswoman Susan Davis’ office in San Diego, CA on December 2—the day after President Obama’s announcement to escalate military forces in Afghanistan. Specifically, the decision was to send 30,000 more young men and women to battle, bringing the total number of troops to 100,000. Withdrawal is not set to begin until July 2011. First of all, let’s not fool ourselves. This is no surprise. In the midst of Obama’s campaign for hope and change last year was the notso-thinly-veiled mention of his plan to withdraw from Iraq—but increase troops in Afghanistan. I voted for him anyway because I found him to be a better choice than his opponent, who had militaristic intentions too. The fact is that as we strive to end one war, we focus on fighting another. So the status quo remains—slightly modified, of course. Now what? Activism. It’s what stopped Vietnam. If we wait for change and passively hope for peace, it won’t come. We have to make it happen. We have to make our government listen to us. Remember that the word democracy comes from the Greek demokratia, or demos, meaning “common people,” and kratos, meaning “rule, strength.” Democracy is rule by the people. But who’s really ruling here? I talked to some activists to find out. Rick Greenblatt of the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice explained, “We know now that the majority of the American people—53 percent according to a recent poll— are in favor of the withdrawal of American troops in Afghanistan, either immediately or within a year. What we need to do is convert that into a movement that has the social power to force the situation to change.” But as I looked around this protest, I saw what seemed to be a devoted small group—not quite the masses. If the majority of the people want peace, where were they on this night? Activist Rio Mezta offered a poignant explanation: “I think that apathy is becoming a part of the norm in this society and the government is doing a really good job of making people afraid to speak out. An essential part to being an activist is to get out there, to raise consciousness, to create awareness, and to show others that it’s okay to speak out.” The activists who are making their voices heard out in the streets define heroism. They are fearlessly rallying for a cause that goes beyond their personal worlds. They call upon us to recognize, for example, how funds are being redirected from our flailing domestic economy to lands overseas. As activist Susan Orlofsky held her sign up high urging, “No More War $Funding$,” she pointed out: “There are so many needy people here. With one quarter of our children in poverty, it’s just cuckoo to go there and spend $100 billion a year—that’s $1 million per soldier.” Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai recently announced that his country will need help paying for its own security until at least 2024. Time will tell about the withdrawal promised in 2011. Beyond financial bottom lines is the immeasurable impact of war upon the innocent people whose homes become battlefields in our absurd effort to fight terrorism with more terror. The United Nations reported

2,118 Afghan civilian deaths in 2008 and 1,013 in the first six months of 2009—a 24 percent increase compared to that time period the year before. But Obama called the escalation of troops a matter of safety when he announced his decision December 1: “If I did not think that the security of the United States and the safety of the American people were at stake in Afghanistan, I would gladly order every single one of our troops home tomorrow. So, no, I do not make this decision lightly. I make this decision because I am convinced that our security is at stake in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is the epicenter of violent extremism practiced by Al Qaeda. It is from here we were attacked on 9/11 and it is from here that new attacks are
being plotted as I speak.” That line of thought sounds eerily reminiscent of Obama’s predecessor. And these activists are not buying it. Greenblatt charged, “We don’t believe that sending
more troops to Afghanistan increases the security of the American people; we actually believe that wars for empires are worse for security. The best thing that we could do is withdraw troops from Afghanistan and Iraq.” The most amazing part about this protest was the diversity among the activists. There were socialists, progressives, peaceniks, members of the gay community, and war veterans, to name a few. Richard Trujillo, Vietnam vet and retired train operator from the Bay Area observed, “As you can see here, there are a number of different views. We’re all interconnected. People get active when they see others doing it. The diversity in the activism is something they remember. That’s the real hope.” Joshua Nadier voiced a similar sentiment when he put down his megaphone to share his perspective: “I’m really big into women’s rights and the anti-war movement. As a gay male wanting to have equality for myself, I’m willing to fight for everyone’s equality, including people in other countries who don’t have a choice over what the hell our government is doing. This is my way of trying to help.” If that doesn’t sound like a hero, then I don’t know what does. Don’t stop here. wo years ago during an airplane trip, Miche Ann Walsh took notice of something she’d witnessed dozens of times before. As she watched the flight attendant collect single-use plastic cups, aluminum cans, and garbage into a trash bag, she thought, Where does all that stuff go? A few days later, she learned the sordid reality. Phoenix Grace, Walsh’s wife, showed her a magazine article about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Waste plastic we toss ends up the ocean, where it remains trapped in gyres, or vortexes created by rotating ocean currents. This plastic does not biodegrade completely; with exposure to sunlight and water, it breaks into small bits and releases chemicals. The two toxic gyres in the Pacific Ocean are one and a half times the size of the United States. In some sections, there are 40 pounds of plastic to every pound of

plankton. The world’s other oceans have garbage patches of their own. Twenty years ago, people concerned about the impact of plastic waste in water circulated images of animals strangled by the plastic rings used to package sixpacks of soda. Some far-reaching types of ecological harm don’t make for such vivid photographs: the “healthy” fresh fish you buy today at the local market may contain residue from that plastic cup in the flight attendant’s trash bag. A lifelong lover of the outdoors and former staffer at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Walsh had discovered her calling: to create a healthy and vibrant ocean and planet now! Tribal Teamwork on the Ground To realize her vision, Walsh drew on diverse assets, including supportive friends and family, investigative skills gained in law enforcement work, and transformational coaching abilities cultivated through years of personal development courses like those offered through Landmark Education. She sought out allies from Captain Charles Moore, founder of The Algalita Marine Research Foundation and one of the world’s experts on ocean garbage patches, to local businesses such as the Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market in San Diego, CA, which provided space for public information sessions. Along with family and friends, Walsh incorporated the California 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, Act Globally, Think Universally, Inc., (AGTU) and on March 27, 2009, she launched The GP2 Project. The name is pronounced “GPtwo” but really means GP squared. It is a movement that is growing exponentially to encompass global partnership, cure the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and create a replicable model for cleaning up all of the planet’s other ocean garbage patches. The project found a treasure in Walsh’s colleague Ruth Shields. Shields’ passion for fostering people’s full participation in life and community had already made her the hub for an expansive online social network consisting of past and present schoolmates, students, coworkers, clients, relatives, colleagues, and friends. With the help of the Internet, The GP2 Project’s founders opened the tent flap to a tribe

that spans the globe. Back into the Cloud The timing was fortuitous. In February, Captain Charles Moore educated attendees of the TED Conference about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, is an event where the world’s leading thinkers gather to share ideas and inspiration for our world. The video of Captain Moore’s talk was published to the popular TED Web site (ted.com). On Earth Day, April 22, 2009, Oprah Winfrey spread the news to her viewers. With awareness building and concern awakened, the next question arose: So, what can we do about this? Technological Solutions Walsh recalls that even Captain Moore was skeptical that there was anything to be done about the ocean garbage patches other than minimizing the plastic we add to them. What he didn’t know was that the ingredients for a solution already exist. Not only is it possible to clean up the patch, the work can be done within a “green circle system” that produces energy rather than consuming it. Walsh’s research uncovered inOvate, LLC, a robotics developer that has an ocean sweeper on the drawing board that can be deployed from a ship or airplane to make plastic and chemicals bubble to the surface. Once this debris is collected, the Bal-Pac machine, a technology developed by Balboa Pacific Corporation of San Diego, CA, can convert the toxic materials into beneficial byproducts including electricity and biochar (a charcoal-like material used as a soil amendment to sequester carbon from the atmosphere) without generating any pollution. The Bal-Pac also generates concentrated carbon dioxide, which can feed algae farms like the one operated by Sapphire Energy, a company in a La Jolla, California that counts Bill Gates among its investors and supplied biofuel for the algae-powered Prius that made a cross-country trip earlier this year. Once the biofuel is extracted from the algae, remaining biomass can be reintroduced to the Bal-Pac to generate even more electricity, biofuel and biochar. A Floating United Nations March 22, 2010 is inauguration day for the biggest ocean cleanup the world has ever seen. The expedition will run through April 15. The GP2 Project is gaining momentum and recently created a collaborative partnership with The Environmental Cleanup Coalition (ECC) of Hawaii (gyrecleanup.org). The project is currently seeking ships from around the world for this historical expedition. Between now and March 22, 2010, AGTU has $7 million to raise and innumerable contacts to pursue. The GP2 Project is seeking to partner with celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, the Dalai Lama, and eco-celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Bono. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” These local heroes are well on their way. They invite you to join the adventure. How can you or your organization make a difference globally? t’s the New Year. How about a tattoo to mark the occasion? Although the popularity of tattooing has gone through a few cycles (starting 5,000 years ago), the current trend seems to be sustained. You now see tattoos on people from every age group and walk of life. And there seems to be an ever-increasing fine-art touch in the renderings. In the United States, 36 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 25, and 40 percent of those between 26 and 40 have at least one tattoo, according to a 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center. The first permanent tattoo shop opened in 1846 in New York City and began tattooing military servicemen from both sides of the Civil War.

To this long tradition comes Instant Karma Tattoo Studio, which opened in North Park, San Diego last summer. I talked with owner/artist/friend Stuart Covill and he put a new spin on the art of tattooing for me. Vision Magazine: Why did you decide to open a tattoo studio? Stuart Covill: I had been getting tattoos for a long time and I have always liked to draw and sculpt. However, I had been bound by practicality, working as a computer programmer, then as a stay-at-home dad to my three daughters. When they got more independent, I found my passion in all areas waning, and I returned to the studio. I had been unwilling to be a starving artist, however, so after finishing my tattoo apprenticeship and working for awhile, I decided to go for it and open my own shop. VM: Why do you think tattoos are so popular now? SC: I believe it’s partly due to the way culture has become more global. With transportation and particularly communication making the world seem smaller, there is a new sense of anonymity. Tattoos help people express their own identity. The art form is much more acceptable now, as well. VM: Our theme this month is everyday heroes. Considering that both of us are fans of the writer Joseph Campbell, how do you think tattooing connects to his themes? SC: I once took a psychology class that covered Joseph Campbell’s monomyth of the Hero’s journey. When I reread Campbell’s take on mythology, I began to see the artistic nature and the ritual aspect of tattooing (with its ancient origins), brought to American awareness by the military (especially the Navy). I see tattooing as a blending of art and ritual, and from Campbell’s writing, I became fascinated with the role of the artist in modern society. He asserted that artists are the modern mythmakers and stressed the importance of rituals. Tattoos are seldom considered “fine art,” but that gives them a freedom of expression. VM: I love the quote from Campbell’s book, Hero With a Thousand Faces: “In the absence of an effective general mythology, each of us has his private, unrecognized, rudimentary, yet secretly potent pantheon of dream.” SC: Everybody’s journey is his/her own hero’s journey. We might display courage from a place of weakness and face sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good. There is typically a departure and a return—metaphorically or otherwise— and you mark this with a ritual. So tied into this dream is one of Campbell’s most identifiable and most quoted sayings which was his admonition to “follow your bliss.” This quote has been somewhat misunderstood. It’s about being conscious and going for what you want. And this is what I’m doing with my business. Unlike the traditional American tattoo shop, I come from a fine arts background. Yet, with tattooing entering the mainstream, there are more people with this training doing tattoos now—but we are still a minority. What’s cool is that there’s room for everybody. People get tattoos for a lot of reasons and I like that. I do have a primary interest in the aesthetic and spiritual aspects and themes, but there’s another side of myself which I’ve marked with tattoos as well. That’s my tribute to darker subjects, old science fiction, and my love of animals. VM: Campbell saw this not merely as a mantra, but as a helpful guide to the

Aries: Temperance (Knight of Pentacles) 3/21-4/19 In the process of planning for the future, it’s important to strive for realistic goals. Ambition without pragmatism is often futile. Before veering too far off the path, take inventory of what you’re currently invested in. More needs to develop, so it’s wiser to be patient than eager at the moment. The efforts you make this month will pay off threefold—if you add the necessary ingredients. This is no one-shot production; you’ll need to creatively sort and blend your resources. If you must appeal to someone for help, be sure you’re organized first. Taurus: Empress (6 of Swords) 4/20-5/21 Birth and creativity are intimately tied together in a way that makes everyone an artist and a mother. The dilemma, however, is that you are placed in these roles whether you like it or not. The thoughts you nurture eventually give birth to offspring, coloring your life with splendor or tedium—it is your choice. Place emphasis on thoughts that bring you joy and you’ll be blessed with a successful harvest. A trip or move involving your mother will yield interesting results. If you’re asked to help, be sure to do so. Those encumbered by financial hardship will find solutions around the 22nd. Gemini: Emperor (5 of Pentacles) 5/22 – 6/21 Take command of your problems this month rather than giving in to worry. Nothing will hold you back as much as being afraid to act. Although circumstances appear bleak, you’ll have the upper hand if you can move through your fear. Letting others’ problems concern you could sidetrack you from your own goals. Careful strategies and hard work go a long way in planning this year’s harvest; there are no corners worth cutting right now. The last week of the month, an authority figure in your life may let you down, but don’t worry—it’s only temporary. Cancer: Chariot (8 of Swords) 6/22 – 7/22 Trapped in indecision? Not sure which way is right? Forget about weighing the pros and cons and just act. Courage is essential now as you remove yourself from the problem. Without beating yourself up, be honest about how you’ve contributed to this issue. This problem is not about what will happen as much as it is when something will happen. You might want to cut your losses while you can and let go of your ego attachments. Your mind can work miracles when it serves the greater good; anything less is a selfish agenda. The full moon on the 29th heralds a memorable event. Leo: Hierophant (Page of Pentacles) 7/23 – 8/23 Higher learning is on the horizon: school, trainings, certifications, spiritual teachings and/or personal study. Take the time to immerse yourself in something meaningful to enrich your life. You may also find yourself in the role of mentor, which will also result in rich learning. As you engage in the process of learning, you’ll see that there are also unconventional ways to find knowledge. When you listen, you’ll hear the story of the world—even in the most unlikely places. Seeking advice around the 1st of the month will reveal surprising answers—don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know. Virgo: Devil (8 of Wands) 8/24 – 9/22 The road to hell is paved with temptation and good intentions; reserve the right to avoid both. A way out of a tough situation will suddenly be revealed; although this solution requires selling your soul to you-know-who. No matter how bad it is now, it will only get worse if you pick the easy way out. Feeling bored in your relationship? Tired of getting overlooked at work? Refrain from making any impulsive decisions for the sake of instant gratification. An artificially sweet intention around the 3rd could turn into poison by the end of the month—be sure it’s not yours.
Libra: Hanged Man (3 of Cups) 9/23 – 10/23 Your patience (whether voluntary or not) will be rewarded with the emotional treat of happiness. Enjoy this celebration while you can because there’s more hard work ahead. Those who linger too long in pleasure will face a consequence of loss. Near the 5th, a seemingly hopeless situation takes a turn for the better relating to marriage or health. Don’t be surprised if your mood takes on several colors throughout the month. The internal forecast predicts a variety of weather patterns. Your goal is to simply observe the emotions without being attached; let them rise and fall like the tide. Scorpio: Star (Ace of Cups) 10/24 – 11/22 Create visions in sync with your heart, for anything less will generate temporary results. There is much to be learned when you listen to the silence. Take time to sit quietly, breathe deeply and trust that you are the creator of your life. An emotional encounter around the 9th will remind you of your past; do not waste energy in remorse or sentimentality. Instead, reflect upon how this experience has changed your concept of self and life. If you’re dealing with an illness, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel when you set your inner sight on it. Sagittarius: Judgment (7 of Wands) 11/23 – 12/21 Karma is often misunderstood as the consequences of our actions: cause and effect in the manifest. Karma, however, doesn’t only respond to your actions—it also responds to your convictions. Notice how your life reflects the internal frame of reference you hold. The notion of right and wrong is simply your opinion; it is the consensus from which laws and truth are professed. Take account of your actions and thoughts. Do they serve you as the person you want to be? Be careful how strongly you commit yourself to being right, because it could cost you something very valuable this month. Capricorn: Tower (King of Wands) 12/22– 1/20 Contrary to what you may believe, even the strongest structures are susceptible to ruin. In an attempt to protect your assets, you try your best to maintain the status quo, but it won’t work this time. Something will fall and, in the process, a trusted means of security will come tumbling down. You may not be able to avoid loss, but you can make the most of what is left. The solar eclipse on the 14th teaches that you are not what happens to you; rather, you are what you choose to become as a result. Aquarius: Wheel of Fortune (2 of Cups) 1/21 – 2/18 People enter and leave your life at meaningful times; however, it’s possible to overlook the magical threshold of one phase turning into the next. Change is on the horizon and as your life turns, you’re also turned into a new person, subtle as it may be. This time beckons events such as marriage, birth, death, reunion, separation and reconciliation. It’s best to avoid trying to control people and events since it usually results in frustration and a half-lived life. The weekend of the 15th will bring a catalyst for change! Pisces: Sun (7 of Pentacles) 2/19 – 3/20 Failure is a mindset that permeates both the conscious and subconscious mind. When you choose not to act due to fear, the potential for failure is not really avoided, it’s postponed. You’ve reached the pinnacle of a project and need to gather the courage to move further or let go. All of your hard work should be celebrated, not just the results of your actions. Success is guaranteed in all endeavors when you concentrate on the quality of your work. For those waiting for a green light, the middle of the month brings a fresh opportunity. Don’t think about the “what ifs”—just do it!

Being Your Own Hero

“How in the end can one possibly hold anyone responsible for our own underdeveloped visions, or undeveloped strength of character?” – Ruth St. Denis, modern dancer, (1879-1968)
W
hen you hear the word “hero,” who do you think of first? Do you think of people who have devoted themselves to making the world a better place, like Nobel Peace Prize winner Emily Greene Balch? People who gave their lives standing up for justice, like civil rights activist Medgar Evers? People who stood on the artistic and cultural edge, like comedian George Carlin? People who invented devices that changed the world forever, like Martin Cooper, the designer of the first cell phone? People you’ve only seen in primary inks on the pages of a comic book, like SpiderMan? Or the people who have been in your life all along, like your parents, grandparents, siblings, and teachers? What is the common denominator in all of these cases? None of them are you. We are far better at looking up to other people, gazing admiringly at their great feats, instead of going out and performing great feats of our own. Why is that so? Why don’t the amazing accomplishments of our heroes spur us to imitate them? After all, trivialities like haircuts and handbags inspire imitation—why not good deeds and work? Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Well, in the real world, it is
anything but. Why do we think heroism is an attribute not our own? We can point the finger at our 24/7 carousel of media, where we see an ever-revolving parade of heroes both genuine and sham. It wasn’t too long ago, when we viewed history through a wide lens, that we only knew the names of our families, neighbors, and merchants. Now we “know” hundreds, maybe thousands of personalities, which should give us more role models to follow. Instead, it only increases the belief that heroism rests outside of us. We might also blame our tendency toward modesty. Even now, when it appears that the world is all too ready to reward those who expose themselves (literally and figuratively), most of us keep our mental trench coats closed tight. Modesty is hardly a vice, but it need not be at odds with heroism. We can think of our heroes as extensions of ourselves. However, we tend to collectivize heroism in the name of patriotism, feminism, and ethnic pride. It is really not fair to piggyback on other people’s achievements. Good acts as well as bad belong to individuals, not groups. That being said, I believe that the most powerful force Photo by Philippe Ramakers

The Nine Secrets of Life by Daphne Carpenter
I
’ve been lucky enough to know some people here on Earth that appear to have fallen out of the sky like angels. These are the people who seem to be able to get along harmoniously in any social atmosphere. They are heroes to me because it takes a lot of class to be able to relate to everyone. A car ride I took the other day made me realize the extent of integrity and strength that these individuals have. The trip was agonizing. My friend dominated the conversation by mostly telling me, to be quite frank, about how great he was in oh-so-many ways. And don’t get me wrong—I’m all for a healthy sense of self-love, but this was taking it to the extreme. As I tilted the passenger seat back, kicked off my shoes and took a deep breath to soak up Pacific Coast Highway, he started up. “Yeah, that friend of yours, Samantha? Well I’ve never met her, but she said she knows me and apparently she loves my work.” “Oh yeah?” I said in a friendly, neutral tone. My friend is, after all, quite talented and I very much support his work. Then he went on to gush about how many newspaper and magazine write-ups he’s had recently. I complimented him on how far he’s evolved in his art. After awhile, he changed the subject and started talking about his day job. “My boss says that he’s never seen anyone excel as fast as me within the company. I’ll get promoted in no time.” Next it was all about his sports scholarships. I started to realize how much energy it takes just to pay attention to people talking about themselves in a onesided conversation. Do I do this, I wondered? At a workshop I attended recently, one of my teachers, Murshida, shared some useful information with our group about how to prosper in social settings and relationships. She said that there is a set of nine topics that, if we could avoid

talking about them in casual conversation, we would almost assuredly have a harmonious dialogue, wherever we are. Murshida refers to these as The Nine Secrets of Life. “The Nine Secrete of Life are topics of ordinary conversation,” she explains. “When we casually answer questions or talk about things like these, we are giving the other person an opportunity to size us up, put us in a box, and most often, judge us.” It’s not that we should never talk about these subjects with anyone, but that we should discuss them only with those who can give expert advice or positive feedback for our personal growth. After the workshop, I conducted a mental assessment and thought about my heroes. I realized that these individuals seem to follow most, if not all of the guidelines discussed in the workshop—whether they were conscious of it or not. Here they are in no particular order of significance. Praise We’ve Received Often we feel the need to be validated by others in our actions, to be told that we are wonderful or that we are doing the right thing. Of course it’s nice to receive a compliment. But what are our intentions when we revert to telling others about the compliments we’ve received? While we might not realize it, perhaps we are attempting to relive that initial ego boosting moment. Are we desperate to confirm that we are great or a worthy person? Would you ever hear the Dalai Lama, one of my personal heroes, boasting about all the praise he’s received? Sexual Activity When you talk about your sexual activity superfluously, you leak the energy out of it. Many people consider sex a sacred act. By keeping it between the individuals involved, you are containing its energy, while building up the intimacy and life force of your lovemaking. Your Wealth or Poverty Recently I saw a comment on Facebook which said, “I looked at the Gucci and realized it was time to go.” I read it twice, then three times. Was that poetry— because this friend of mine is quite savvy with words—or was he boasting about his wealth?

“Our whole culture makes the dollar God,” says Murshida. “It’s all about how much money we have. We feel as though we’ve failed if we don’t have a lot of it.” On the other hand, by complaining about a lack of money, we are often either wanting to draw sympathy, or confirm that we are in a terrible state. Murshida suggests, “If you really want financial advice, go to someone reputable who can help. Discern who you’re going to talk to.” If we complain about what little money we have, don’t we just keep generating and attracting scarcity? Your Teacher’s Instructions This can be from any kind of teacher; a spiritual advisor, a financial planner, a sensei, or a psychologist. Their instructions to you are based on intimate details about your life. If you hold these intimate details to yourself sacredly and avoid talking about them casually, they begin to hold energy for you. “A teacher’s instructions to you is like a doctor giving you medicine—medicine to move through the obstacles in your own personality and psyche,” says Murshida. “Keep this information sacred and then put the work into evolving.” Diet Does the taco truck man who humbly offered you a free carne asada taco really need to know that you’re a vegetarian? By declaring this, we often separate ourselves from others. The man might go on to assume that you have something against him because he eats meat. It can be awkward. A “no thank you” or “can you make me a bean taco please?” might be a more creative, polite way of getting around it without sounding snobby. I think back to a time when I was 20 and staying in a Russian family’s home in Germany. “Mama” had spent the better part of the afternoon in the kitchen cooking up a welcome dinner for me. I remember the look on her face when I declared that I couldn’t eat her famous vegetable soup with meatballs because I was a vegetarian. “A what?” she queried incredulously. You can imagine how the next hour and a half went—and the next week, for that matter. Age “When a person asks you how old you are, it could just be a friendly question, but inwardly, the person may be sizing you up to decide whether you are a possible mate,” advises Murshida. People often decide whether or not they want to put energy into becoming your friend or business partner based on your chronological age. It brands an unnecessary number on a person. Of course, when the theme of age is appropriate and relative to what’s going on, that’s a different story. But within these guidelines, the topic of someone’s age is thought to be irrelevant in casual conversation. Blame When we’ve been blamed for something (whether we did it or not), we often look for someone who will empathize with us and engage in frivolous talk about who we perceive to be the offender. “Can you believe she’s always getting on my case about not living up to her expectations? I mean, she’s never been the cool mom that I always wished she was. Ugh! ” I hear this one often from my friend Lola (not her real name) and it makes me feel uncomfortable. She habitually speaks negatively about her mom, who apparently blames her for “everything.” I know Lola wants me to side with her, to make her feel better about who she actually is—rather than who her mother expects her to be—but as she abrasively slams her mother, I start to tune out. This brings us to the next topic… Family Life Your family relationships are like flowers. If you put work into cultivating them, V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
l i v i n g a r t s they will grow and strengthen. When you talk about your family members and/ or problems within the household without any kind of discretion, they become energy leaks. Building prosperity in your family takes dedication and vigilant care. The mouth can be a source of wasted energy and superfluous dialogue. Medicines You Are Taking You leave yourself open to judgment when you reveal what medicines you take in casual conversation. Murshida says this loose talk can “stifle your healing.” In a work environment, others may assume that you might not be the right person for the job if they knew, for example, that you took blood pressure medicine. And there are always those people who get on your case and tell you that you should only take natural medicine—holistic nazis, as Murshida refers to them. They are people who “can’t see your point of view and cause a separation from the state of union.” That’s when a wealth of holistic knowledge can be counterproductive. ~~~~~~~~~~ Since I’ve received The Nine Secrets of Life, I’ve discovered that by being more aware of what flies out of my mouth, my relationships seem to flow a little bit more smoothly. Through these teachings and the overall desire to evolve as a person (even though life can be overwhelming at times), I’m recognizing the beauty in others and discovering the hero within. then it really branched off from there to help other people use their intentions to promote the healing process. That’s really the focus of my work. At a lot of my conferences I integrate concepts of molecular biology to explain why our intention influences our biochemistry so strongly. One common example is epigenetics, which is based on the fact that our genes are not set in stone. It’s all about the expression of these genes, which is very dynamic. You can directly influence how your cells perceive the environment that they’re in. If you’re in a happy state, that’s how your cells respond. The bottom line is that your environment directly affects the expression of every gene in your body—and we can use this to our advantage because that’s really what it comes down to when you’re trying to heal yourself. You can be in a more healing state just by focusing your intention and there’s an enormous amount of scientific evidence supporting this— not only with some of the work that I’ve done but with thousands of very well known scientists from around the world. VM: What would be the most important goal you have right now in your work? AD: I really want these concepts integrated into mainstream medicine by getting patients focused on healing and actively participating in this human process. We have this idea right now that you go to the doctor, they give you a prescription, and you just take the pill. But there’s no responsibility on your part. It doesn’t make sense because we know scientifically that if you’re positive and focused, psychically you are far more likely to heal. But we don’t actively encourage people to do it. In fact, in many cases with people who have chronic diseases such as cancer, for example, when they go their oncologists, the way that the news is told to them does the opposite in discouraging them from participating in the healing process. I’ve heard from a number of different people that their oncologists said it doesn’t matter what you eat or what you do—it won’t make a difference as far as the healing goes. And that’s nonsense. You should still be doing everything you can to promote healing in your body. One of the problems with allopathic medicine is that we tend to judge health solely on a number of biochemical markers— but there’s more to health than that. A big part of it is the quality of life and how a person feels. You can use intentions to promote healing and affect those biochemical markers. You’re not only feeling better; you are getting better. VM: What could someone expect by attending one of your workshops? AD: People who come to my workshops learn a lot about the science behind V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
healing, which I think is very important for a lot people who seem to think of healing and energy as a very mystical thing. I don’t like to think that at all. I like to break it down into very basic scientific concepts that help to explain it. And I think that really helps people use these energies more effectively. In the workshops, people are also going to get a chance to use these energies a lot. They’re going to experience these energies first hand and have a lot of tools for playing around with it and using it for healing. There’s a lot of information in the workshop. It’s a real life-changing experience for many people who get to see and feel their energy for the first time. VM: What is one thing that our readers can do on a daily basis to change their lives? AD: Put five minutes aside every day to visualize how you want the next day to go. Some people like to visualize selling that house or getting that job. Others like to visualize health. Imagine doing all the things that you’re going to do once you get past whatever your illness is. Your intentions are very powerful tools once you start using them. VM: What do you think the future holds for our world? AD: I think that the collective intention of the entire planet plays a huge role in determining which direction we will go. So it’s important to have everyone focus on the same wavelength to visualize the healing. Collectively, it makes a big difference. Experience Adam DreamHealer’s one-day event March 7 in Marina del Rey as he merges the auras of all participants and performs two unique group energy treatments. The event will be held at the Marina del Rey Mariott, 4100 Admiralty Way. Shadow Work – A A Conversation w by Sydney L.
T
he sky was alight with color that made me gasp as I stood outside my home yesterday morning and I was grateful for all that I have. It was the day after Christmas and I saw it as a gift— a reminder of the light that is within us all. The New Year brings up memories of the year past, as well as a sense of hope for the future. So often this striving for a better life seems to fade away and is replaced by the task of living. So as we ponder the future we can ask, “How do I create a better life for myself?” Debbie Ford’s teachings on the shadow can help us mine the gold that is found deep within each one of us, often mired in the dark recesses of our minds. Those aspects of ourselves that we fear sharing with others, once revealed and acknowledged, can allow us the ability to purge destructive tendencies. Often, we create personas to mask what we least like to divulge. Ford’s teachings really resonate with me. Inattention to our shadow element perpetuates damaging behaviors that we may hold deep within. This neglect can be harmful not only in our personal lives but also to society as well. The seduction of war, rising drug use in the suburbs and the endless obsession with those in the media spotlight are manifestations of this widespread neglect. Are Americans afraid of the wrong things? Each one of us can begin to answer that question only when we understand and expose our own shadow aspects. Ford’s DVD and soon-to-be-released new book, The Shadow Effect–A Journey From Your Darkest Thought to Your Greatest Dream, offers ways that we can constructively deal with our own shadows and, in time, the collective shadow. Vision Magazine: What is the shadow effect? Debbie Ford: The shadow effect occurs when parts of ourselves are denied or suppressed, or when a hidden aspect surfaces unexpectedly. The shadow effect is that moment when, all of a sudden, we are shocked by the words that come out of our mouths— ones that we never meant to say, or when we exhibit self-sabotaging behavior. The shadow effect is when we drink too much, spend too much; when we cheat on our spouses, when we get caught overspending from a company expense account, for example, or when we get caught in a lie. It happens when we suddenly blow up at our children or somebody we love, or when we think that we’ve turned off the phone and then gossip about one of our friends. VM: What would be our national shadow in the United States? DF: I think right now we have experienced greed and irresponsibility. We’ve spent money we haven’t had. There are many people taking tremendous bonuses and salaries while leaving other people broke. The Bernie Madoffs of the world V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
are our shadows and we have not had the correct systems in place to ensure that people like him are unable to commit huge financial frauds or the banks we’re bailing out do not have access to tremendous bonuses. Denial is one of the shadows where we do not really own up to the issues and the problems facing us. All of you are a part of this country, where half the people are going to love you and the other half is going to try to destroy you. Because of this polarity, people don’t work together. VM: What would be a constructive way to engage the shadow? DF: Your shadow has a voice. It can guide you and tell you why it’s there. To heal the shadow is to find the gifts buried within. We can discover this shadow through guided imagery or journaling. We could ask ourselves, Why would I need this aspect of myself? Why would I have needed this shadow experience—perhaps there was something dark that happened when I was a child? And how do I love these parts of myself? Through shadow work you will hear it inside. This is where the answers lie. In our training, I make people actually work through the big shadows underneath that are painful for them, like being made fun of by others. It is when they face this possible humiliation that they can be fully self-expressed. Otherwise they are always minimizing their greatness out of the fear of this shadow aspect. VM: How did the book come about? DF: It was after the DVD got released and I began really seeing the tremendous affect it had on people. There is an emerging awareness now that the shadow isn’t something to be feared; it isn’t something to run from and be hidden. Instead the shadow actually, when brought to the surface, can heal us and bring us together. It helps us integrate into a whole moving organism. My publisher wanted me to write another book. I had already written The Secret of the Shadow; The Dark Side of the Light Chasers and Why Good People Do Bad Things, which are all about the shadow. I suggested that we bring in Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. They did such an amazing job in the movie [The Shadow Effect] and both of them have been inspirations and friends to me as well. The book, which comes out May 4, 2010, from Harper One, will be in three parts. I’ll be doing the individual shadow and how we embrace, make peace with, and digest our own personal shadows. Deepak will be writing about how our individual shadows make up the collective shadow that haunts us and can destroy us—whether it’s because we ignore the environment, our own financial health or the integrity of our collective whole. Marianne will be doing the spirit of the shadow through the eyes of God and spirit. She will ask, “How does the

shadow come in? Is there evil and how do different cultures and religions deal with the shadow?” And how can we do this work? Unfortunately a lot of spiritual people turn their backs on the shadow, thinking that it is not holy. There’s a conversation in the world today regarding the law of attraction: “If I put my attention on it, it will grow.” But what people don’t understand is that your shadow will blow up in your face if you don’t put attention on it. So Marianne, in her most loving and holy way, will allow people in the context of spirituality, to be able to see what I’ve seen all these years when I teach that the shadow might be the holiest part of ourselves. Shadow work is sacred work because we have to be vulnerable, compassionate and heartfelt. It’s very easy to love yourself when you wake up feeling and looking good; when you have enough money in the bank; when everybody is doing what you want them to do and when there are opportunities everywhere you look. But is this love? I believe that you can love yourself even when you don’t feel good or when you’ve lost your job and you can’t feed your family or when your husband left you or is cheating on you. This is real love—compassionate and sacred. VM: Our theme in January is everyday heroes. Are there heroes in your life? DF: I have so many. All of the people who train with me are my heroes. People who come to do shadow work are learning to love what’s been unlovable, not just in themselves, but also in our world. These are the love stories. And to me that’s what is going to bring the peace; that’s going to be the healing—when we learn from all aspects of ourselves. The people I’ve trained always awe me. I also have the most amazing family—my sister Arielle Ford and my brother-in-law, Brian Hilliard are big heroes of mine. My dad, and my child—oh my God! They’re phenomenal. I have so many great teachers. Deepak Chopra is one of my heroes. He will never leave things the status quo. He’s always pushing himself, always going further. Marianne Williamson does this as well. I’m in a group of evolutionary leaders where all of them blow my mind because they’re unwilling to sit and keep their mouths shut. They are courageous, and they will stand up for those who have no voice. You, Sydney! You’re a hero of mine. People like you who have magazines and radio shows and are putting this information out to the world. That’s courage. That’s strength. That’s the willingness to forge new ground. VM: What’s on the horizon for you? DF: In January, we’re doing my latest book The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse on Oprah.com. I’m really excited about being able to take millions of people through a transformation. I look forward to supporting them as they reconnect with what will heal them.
We’ve been doing the shadow process in other countries. We did them last year in Lebanon, the UK (United Kingdom), and Denmark. It’s being taught in Germany and Israel as well. VM: It must be interesting to see different cultures participating in the shadow work. DF: It’s amazing to see how people’s hearts just crack open because they realize that the person on the other side of the border is just like them. That’s my commitment—to educate teachers so that they can educate kids and then move on to the world leaders to show them that we don’t have to be ashamed of our shadows. We have to deal with this aspect of ourselves and stop pointing our fingers at everybody else. VM: If all of us would stop pointing the finger at others and look within, we could change the world. DF: It’s easier to point the finger than to deal with certain parts of ourselves. There is a tendency in all of us to waste time on other people’s lives. We can be spaced out for hours on Facebook instead of going after our soul’s dream. Many people are addicted to gossip sites, reading newspapers and watching news shows. Of course we all need a dose of the news to know what’s going on in the world, but not so much that we give away our own light in order to look at others. We deserve self-love and the only way to attain this completely is to love all of the parts within us. We also must realize that the shadow really isn’t dark, because as soon as we bring light to it—it is light. People don’t have to be afraid of this process because they’re going to find something inside themselves that’s so awesome, so perfect, and so whole that they’ll never have to be scared again. They won’t have to overeat or overspend or do whatever it is that they do to numb the pain. Just stop it, get out of it, and bathe in the light.
It is only when we have the courage to face things exactly as they are, without any self deception or illusion, that a light will develop out of events by which the path to success may be recognized.

by Sydney L. Vision Magazine: What was your impetus to create Oasis TV? Robert Schnitzer: The impetus was the viability to merge my passion for metaphysics, spirituality and world peace. After spending many decades making and marketing independent feature films, I decided to set what the next chapter in my life was going to be by combining my personal bliss with my professional experience. It was time to shift the rudder on the river of life and see where it would take me. Soon I realized that Oasis TV would have a shot, given my experience and the need for it in the media. VM: When did you start Oasis TV? RS: I started in ’96 with the concept. In ’97, we went on satellite TV for six months, but the market for digital cable was in its infancy. So when streaming video online came along, we decided to shift gears and put all our energy behind that. Then in 2006, we returned full circle to television in the form of cable with free video on-demand in Los Angeles in 1.3 million homes. Now we’re expanding to approximately six million more homes in 50 cities including San Diego, Santa Barbara and many more along the west coast. VM: Tell me about some of the everyday heroes you’ve run into throughout the years in your Oasis TV ventures. RS: It’s such a thrill to be one-on-one with Neale Donald Walsch, James Redfield, Marianne Williamson—people who are putting out a lot of light in these dark times. More and more, I see people who, as Marianne Williamson says, get off the yoga mat once in awhile and become an activist for what they’re passionate about. What it’s going to take to make a difference is everyone in their own way doing what they do best—and doing it with loving kindness and sincere service to all stakeholders. It’s going beyond the old paradigm of our shareholders, advertisers, and customers to the new paradigm of the local community and the planet. VM: What is some of the new programming that you’re excited about? RS: We have “Suzuki Speaks” with David Suzuki, a physicist and cosmologist. This is an incredible television special about Suzuki’s teachings in the most entertaining way using new animation technology. Another one that’s really interesting is a brand new program called “The Secret Code” with Norm Shealy, the president of the American Holistic Association who just produced an incredible

documentary called, Medical Renaissance: The Secret Code. We also have a series called “Spirituality in the Arts” and the first episode is David Carradine’s last public presentation in which he opens up and reveals his demons and his angels. That’s a beautiful piece and will run nationwide February 15. We have a broad range of programming that includes yoga (our studies showed that people really benefit by having a 24/7 yoga class available ondemand right in their living rooms). We are humbly honored to be part of the community and I want everyone to know that it’s not a closed system; our door’s open for potential contributors, programming and participation. VM: What does 2010 hold for you and Oasis TV? RS: In January, we’ll be launching our linear channel. In February or March, we’ll be on mobile with iPhone and BlackBerry. It’ll be at everyone’s fingertips for free, even if it’s a two-minute burst of inspiration while stuck in traffic. We’re looking forward to expanding into more markets within the United States and we’re in development with international deals as well. Also, we’re in the process of establishing a studio in our world headquarters and we’ll be doing a lot of shooting at this location. Another goal is to expose alternative ideas to the younger generation. Unlike their parents and grandparents, they are under what I would call electronic assault. They can’t look anywhere without a colored plasma screen, cell phone, or computer. If we can inject into that the value of treating others as we would like to be treated and appreciating people for their diversity— the stuff that’s subtly omitted or censored from the media, then they can get a little exposure and make a difference. VM: How do you feel about the future? Do you have hope for our world? RS: I would have to say that I am an optimist. Ultimately, I hold a vision of a much healthier, happier, and more peaceful world. I believe that these gyrations V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
we’re going through will be painful on so many levels—financial, economic, political and personal. Yet there’s a step beyond which is that mankind will emerge into a much more free world. I think that beginning in 2013 or 2014, we’re going to start to see the fruits of the efforts of the unsung everyday heroes working in their own fields to make a difference, whether it’s as a writer, a baker, a retailer, a lawyer or a healer. Community is more important now than ever. None of us are alone in this and through the printed media, the electronic media, and the Internet, those tools can be put to good use to bring it all back home. That’s what Oasis TV is trying to do: to make a little bit of a difference and realize our mission to help create a happier, healthier and more peaceful planet. To check out Oasis TV’s cutting edge alternative programming airing 24/7 visit oasistv.com.

eroes, heroes, heroes! That’s what was popping out in my mind a lot this month. I’m not seven anymore but I still believe in heroes. I believe that they are everywhere and in each of us—sometimes hidden between layers of everyday problems and worries— but they still exist and when you least expect it they come out. And I’m determined to find them! To me, heroes are those that made somebody’s day better, put a smile on a face, helped an elder cross the street, stopped a forest fire, risked their lives to save somebody else’s—anybody that made this world a better place or did a good deed without expecting a reward for it. Heroes are very humble creatures. In most cases they don’t even know that they did something out of the ordinary; this is the meaning of life to them—to help others! Project Wildlife is one of the largest non-profit wildlife rehabilitation organizations in the United States. Established in 1972, Project Wildlife cares for injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife of San Diego County and after one to three months, the rehabilitated animals are released back into their natural habitats. It’s like a hospital/orphanage for wild animals. But sometimes animals never get 100

percent healthy again and it’s therefore impossible for them to survive in the wild. In those cases, Project Wildlife keeps them safe as “volunteer’s assistants” in an education program that goes around town and teaches children and adults about the value of wildlife. I think that anyone who works or volunteers for this organization is an everyday hero. I went straight to the top and spoke with Lisa Culver, the executive director of the organization. Surely it must be very challenging to lead 550 volunteers who care for over 10,000 animals from more than 320 species. Culver was shocked and humbled to be called a hero. Well, duh, what did I expect? That’s characteristic of a hero—they don’t enjoy the media. “Any of these volunteers are more of a hero than I am; they are the ones that heal and care for the animals!” she exclaimed. “Even Baby Great Horned Owl is more of a hero then I am!” I tried to speak with some of the volunteers but they were all running away from me; they had lots more important things to do. So I have decided, the hero of this month is Baby Great Horned Owl. She couldn’t refuse my nomination. Well, at least not in a language I understand. The baby owl was brought to Project Wildlife in March 2009, most likely only a few weeks old and suffering from a broken wing. Project Wildlife was able to set the wing; however due to the nature of the break, the owl would not be able to survive in the wild with its limited ability to fly and hunt effectively. This little hero owl will become an animal for education and teach our community about the beauty of wildlife. Can you imagine how many hearts she will touch in her lifetime?! She has already accomplished a lot for a 10-monthold! This article was reprinted from Good Times Ocean Beach, Volume 3. For more information about Project Wildlife, visit projectwildlife.org.

Kombucha 2000 h o l i s t i c
T
p r o d u c t s
here’s a fungus among us! Kombucha, a fermented tea that originated in China, has been praised for thousands of years for its extraordinary health benefits. For me, there was only one problem: I couldn’t stand the taste. That was until Kombucha 2000. The fermented cider-like tang was smooth and not overbearing like other kombuchas. Pleasantly surprised, I could now actually enjoy the healing properties of this energizing beverage. Organic, raw, freshly harvested and non-alcoholic, Kombucha 2000 comes in an amber glass bottle that protects the precious tonic inside from UV contamination. I say precious because this elixir may help with liver detoxification, immune system building, weight loss, energy boosts, digestion, elimination, and restoring healthy flora to the gastrointestinal tract. It contains Vitamins C and B-Complex, live enzymes, glucuronic acid, (a natural detoxifier), and other vital acids. People all over the world have reported amazing results from the regular consumption of kombucha. Patients with AIDS have experienced a rise in T cells. Senior citizens have been awestruck as their hair turned from grey back to its original color. Athletes across the globe have used it to increase energy. Kombucha has also been useful with tendonitis, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, kidney stones, colitis, asthma, bronchitis, gout and allergies. It can also slow aging, reduce wrinkles, improve memory, reduce fat, clear acne, increase sex drive and help with symptoms of PMS. Sound like a wonder tonic? That’s why people have been swearing by it for thousands of years. Some people take two to four ounces before a meal. Others prefer their kombucha on an empty stomach in the morning, while some swig it down in higher amounts throughout the day. I like to enjoy mine before a meal because its low pH level of three improves digestion and the absorption of nutrients. The result? More mental and physical energy. And did I mention that Kombucha 2000 tastes incredible, especially when compared to other brands? Flavors such as apple, blueberry, cherry, strawberry, ginger, mango, peach and papaya are sure to excite your taste buds. Health-oriented businesses are discovering Kombucha 2000 every day and stocking up for conscious consumers who demand it. Now available in countless locations in Los Angeles and Orange County, Kombucha 2000 has recently expanded to San Diego and can now be found at: Ocean Beach Peoples Organic Foods Market, Stephanie’s Bakery, Stern’s Gym, Filter Coffeehouse, Windmill Farms and progressive restaurants such as Café India, Extreme Pizza on Rosecrans, Peace Pies, Rancho’s, Veg-N-Out, The Loving Hut, and Dubai. Kombucha 2000 is taking the health industry by storm and media giants like Oprah, CNN, Dateline and 20/20 have taken notice. If you have a health-related business, you can carry Kombucha 2000 to enhance your clients’ health and your profitability. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, marketing reps are needed to increase distribution nationwide. If you are a consumer on the hunt for an amazing health tonic, this is the drink for you. For more information about Kombucha 2000, available in 12 oz and 25.4 oz, contact Natural Health Group at 800.701.9364 or info@naturalhealthgroup.org. Cabo & Coral’s Secret Surf Spot!
T
he moment I opened Cabo & Coral’s Secret Surf Spot! by San Diego surfer Dr. Udo Wahn, I couldn’t help but smile. The first page of this educational and inspirational children’s book featured young Cabo in a peace sign T-shirt taking a summer surf trip with his parents—in an electric Volkswagen bus with a license plate that said, “Aloha.” This delightful adventure embodies the true meaning of Aloha through love, respect, kindness, and living in harmony with nature. Beyond catching incredible waves, the children in the book learn the value of a clean beach as they remember the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. And leave only footprints in the sand! Illustrator Hanna Daly’s vibrant art inspired me to linger on each page to appreciate the detail of her work, drawing me into the characters’ magical world of adventure. As the family camps out on a gorgeous site along the coast and gazes at the darkened sky, I, too, was able to identify the Big and Little Dippers illuminating the night. The spiritual element of surfing is eloquently woven into this tale, bringing it depth while remaining lighthearted and fun as dolphins play and seagulls swoop upon a dreamlike surf spot that makes me want to run to the ocean— never mind that it’s winter! As an environmental activist, Dr. Wahn puts the valuable lessons of this stellar children’s book into action by donating a portion of all proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation. Cabo & Coral’s Secret Surf Spot! is a must for any child or ageless lover of the ocean. Cabo & Coral’s Secret Surf Spot! $17.95, is available through caboandcoral.com. – EP
The Hero and the Goddess
L
ife can be seen as a journey of personal transformation — a landscape upon which we experience painful setbacks and thrilling successes. It is often through the challenges that we grow and become stronger. This is how everyday heroes come to be. The Dark Age of Greece gave rise to Homer, the epic poet who introduced us to Odysseus. On his journey home from the Trojan War some 3000 years ago, Odysseus encounters many struggles in The Odyssey on what becomes an arduous path to self-discovery. The Hero and the Goddess: The Odyssey as Pathway to Personal Transformation, by Jean Houston, is an inspiring retelling of this classic tale. As the principal founder of the Human Potential Movement, Houston has dedicated her life to the study of human experience and development. She presents Odysseus as not only a hero, but as an archetype to propel us on our own journeys. With a foreword by Marianne Williamson, this enlightening book delivers a step-by-step guide to achieve transformation. Each chapter contains an exercise with suggested music, script and materials in which you might find yourself dressing up in costume or enjoying chocolate mousse (recipe included)! Who ever said that integrating the ancient wisdom of Homer’s Odyssey into our modern-day lives couldn’t be fun? Houston has given us the tools and it is now up to us to follow that path and manifest the hero within us. The Hero and the Goddess, $16.95, Quest Books, is available at questbooks.net. health and any autoimmune or inflammatory condition. One client, after receiving this treatment at Cove Wellness Detox Spa of La Jolla, recently expressed, “My rheumatoid arthritis kept me from so many activities, it was difficult to enjoy life and the medications were causing hyperacidity. Since my program of cleansing at Cove Wellness, I’ve lost 18 lbs. and am off all my medications. My energy is back and I am pain free.” Colon Hydrotherapy Colon hydrotherapy is a time proven positive adjunct to any health, weight loss or detoxification program. The large intestine tends to accumulate toxins due to poor eating habits, lack of exercise, stress and emotional holding patterns. Reabsorption of these toxins into the bloodstream can set the foothold for disease. Colon cleansing allows for a cleaner bloodstream, improved digestion and elimination, greater vitality and better assimilation of vital nutrients. Your Overall Wellness At Cove Wellness Detox Spa of La Jolla, you will find therapies to purify and nourish your body. Debbie Ford, bestselling author and speaker, said, “If you are ready to feel healthier than you have in years, you must experience Cove Wellness. With their unsurpassed therapies and professional staff, you will be restored to health and vitality. My favorites are the Signature La Jolla Detox and the Liver/ Gallbladder therapies. As a longstanding client, I highly recommend Cove Wellness to anyone committed to achieving optimal health.”

“The Sound of Love” continued from page 8
DP: It is an awesome experience to bring drum circles out into the community. As humans, rhythm has been a part of our history and experience since the beginning. However, now we mostly get our rhythm fi x while out clubbing. Then, after a certain age, we stop. This doesn’t have to be the case. Engaging in music creation is good for the body, mind and spirit. You can see it in the faces of people who participate in these events for the first time; it’s like coming home. In the drum circle that I facilitate (based on the techniques introduced by master drummer, Arthur Hull), everyone is invited to play regardless of experience. These circles are meant to encourage exploration, curiosity, camaraderie, unity, and the community working together to create something bigger than ourselves. VM: How has helping others through music therapy changed your life? DP: Being a music therapist has changed my life by giving me the opportunity to relate to other people across all barriers through a medium that gets down to the very essence of our humanity and our spirituality. Just yesterday, a teenaged girl said to me, “That music thing we did — that was the most fun I’ve ever had.” I am honored to be able to be a part of something so simple and so profound. Let’s all sit around and play and sing, it just might be “the best fun” you’ll ever have. To learn more about Peace Through Music Uganda, check out teachingchildrenpeace. com. $3 of each sale from Davida Price’s debut CD, In Child’s Pose, will go to this cause. CDs are available at CDbaby.com/cd/davidaprice. Come to the next drum circle at Architecture, 3956 30th St in San Diego, February 20 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Please note that this event is for folks who are 21 and over.

“Being Your Own Hero” continued from page 19
ROLFING
keeping us from being heroes in our own lives is inertia. Inertia is a more powerful force than we think. We may believe that inertia is the opposite of action, but it is an act—the act of staying put. Superstitiously, we think that staying put will protect us from danger. But it kills us before bodily death to not boldly go forward. We are creatures of impulse. We shiver when it gets cold, recoil when we get too close to fire, and freeze when we feel a threat—even when we know that we should act. Being a hero is an act of risk. It doesn’t necessarily mean risk of life or health. It’s often a matter of just saying what must be said, whether it be words of criticism, praise, or love. It often means making ourselves known to the world. I confess that I have many essays that are half-finished or yet-to-be-written. My rate of completion in the absence of a request or deadline remains embarrassingly slow, as unhurried as a growing tree. I have a LinkedIn account, a Twitter account, a spot for my graphics and photography at behance.net, and, yes, a blog. But I delay using these assets to my professional advantage. I can say that I can’t see the forest (the future) for the trees (the present)—but that’s not the whole truth. I, too, allow inertia to hold me back. When I am online, I “drift” to news sites like HuffingtonPost.com instead of looking for new markets and opportunities. I also lose my focus when I remember to do the laundry and buy the groceries but “forget” to write or cold call potential clients. Inertia is the villain, but it has two great superheroes ready to fight it: awareness and action. Awareness brings to light what you are doing now (automatically logging on to The Huffington Post and jumping to every story that sounds interesting); action jolts you to a different, better place (checking out the Writer’s Market board or AbsoluteWrite.com and sending out those essays). Awareness opens your eyes, and action moves your feet (or hands, whichever applies). If you think about it, heroes always carry these two attributes. Make awareness and action two of your best friends. Perhaps you could write them on a blank postcard or design a card and put it in a place that you visit often. When you keep these two words close, you will be a hero in your own life faster than you can say, “Shazam!”

WESTON RIFFLE Gimlet
“Under the boot of selfperpetuating political and social degradation, I crawl hoping they won’t notice. With a whip grey existence and the stick of red intention, I fight. Lights and grease, that’s what they are. I paint them. The brilliance and the work of one not noticed, not by those that claim to carry their food rations. I paint them because my contempt for the others and their cages and rules grows. I paint them because the others don’t see some things. I paint them because I am from California. I paint them because I have no choice.”
a r t i s t
A native Californian born in 1970, Weston Riffle has been a vegan for over 20 years and is a mostly selftaught painter who describes himself as an anti-artist. His painting portrays the beauty and culture of California, specifically the southern and agricultural regions. “I wish to express simple purity in desire, action, and hope, of the people and places I have known,” Riffle reflects. “The general theme is the struggle of the individual against forces not clearly understood. Form, composition, and color develop around the individual or situation I attempt to resolve or portray with each painting. Usually complex beginnings end in simple composition. A fatalistic view seems to be the result.” Riffle’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout California, including the National Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad, the Oceanside Museum of Art and the Gotthelf Gallery in La Jolla. For more information view fatsip.com or contact weston@ fatsip.com.

San Diego Seniors Join National Yoga USA Day Celebration by Patrice Karst
Literally meaning “union” in Sanskrit, yoga has been known to help with stress management, improvement in heart health, reduction of cholesterol, and improved circulation. Practicing yoga can help with illnesses ranging from asthma to cancer. Yoga is also known for slowing the signs of aging, decreasing wrinkles, firming skin and reducing oxidative stress. Now that yoga has hit the mainstream, most people either have, or know someone who has experienced the benefits of this healing practice. Nonetheless, there are still many people who are yet to experience yoga. There’s where our everyday heroes come in. Saturday, January 23 is Yoga USA Day. Celebrated all throughout the nation, Yoga Day USA was created by Yoga Alliance, the national education and support organization for yoga in the United States. In San Diego, CA, Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO) will open all their classes to the general public throughout the week of January 18-23. The purpose is to raise awareness for the non-profit which has provided over 7000 free yoga classes to underserved seniors in the county since 2004. Donations will be gratefully accepted at each class during this week. Every dollar raised will go to Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach to sustain and grow this health-enhancing yoga program and keep the classes free for the seniors. The fundraiser known as SAYCO Yoga Challenge proved to be a winner in
October 2009 when approximately 100 members of Pacific Athletic Club in Del Mar, CA raised over $8000 for this worthy nonprofit. A good percentage of the participants had never practiced yoga prior to this event and now many of these people continue taking yoga classes regularly. Based on this success, the goal for the Yoga USA Challenge 2010 is to have 20 participants at each of the 25 senior centers, where SAYCO is teaching yoga, combine to raise $20,000 or more. It’s a lofty goal indeed, but one that is readily attainable. Here’s how: Participants select the class they want to attend by visiting silverageyoga.org and clicking on the classes button. They can then ask for sponsors to help raise whatever funds they can for Silver Age Yoga and bring those monies to the class they attend. Silver Age Yoga DVDs and T-shirts will also be available for sale or they can be purchased online. According to a 2008 Yoga Journal study, 15.8 million Americans practice yoga and 14 million say that a doctor or therapist has recommended yoga to improve their health. Yoga as medical therapy is garnering more attention in the medical community as demonstrated by National Institute of Health’s (NIH) first ever Yoga Week which explored the science and practice of yoga. Now is your chance to be an everyday hero and help bring yoga to a senior in need. For more information on the Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach, visit silverageyoga.org, call 877.313.3110, or e-mail info@silverageyoga.org. Those who cannot attend any of the SAYCO classes during Yoga USA Challenge week can still support Silver Age Yoga by writing a check made payable to SAYCO and sending it to 7968 Arjons Drive, Suite 213, San Diego, CA 92126.
