Celtic Cross of Australia
by Christan Hummel ccording to both traditions of Celtic geomancy, and Native American medicine wheel, the sacred circle contains the heart or energetic center, (usually the place of the altar) with the boundaries surrounding and protecting this most holy place. Allowing entry in or out of this circle, are the gateways, usually oriented to the four directions. They create a deep sense of order and harmony in any environment. And while this is true of the home, it is also found in cities, even in whole countries. One example I recently discovered while in the process of preparing for an upcoming tour of Australia, was that the whole continent followed this pattern of the Celtic Cross. The sacred center, in the case of Australia, is the place most venerated by the Aboriginal people, Uluru (Ayers Rock), right in the heart of the continent. This protrusion of rock mysteriously jutting up from nowhere, like an altar provided by Nature Herself, is surrounded by the boundary—the circle surrounding the Celtic Cross, or the wheel of the medicine wheel, which is the boundary of the country itself. Viewed from this perspective, the whole of Australia is one giant medicine wheel. The “gateways” (in this case aligned with the four directions) are the key entry points in and out of the country: Sydney to the east, Melbourne to the south, Perth to the west, and Darwin at the north. In this model, the health and proper functioning of the gateways play an important role in the health of the region, as they allow the energies in and out of the boundaries into the center. Just as the energetic gateways of communities and countries are important—of equal importance are the gateways of our homes and gardens, and the energetic “gatekeepers” that stand watch over them. One can hardly pass a garden these days without seeing a statue of St. Francis, Buddha, Quan Yin or other religious figures installed there. Perhaps unknowingly,

the owners have created “guardians” of their properties. Despite the country, religion or culture—as you begin to look for them, you will find these “guardians of the gates” wherever you go. Gateways of all types are important to the energy flow of a property and a home. Many of the temple builders throughout the world understood this, and often installed temple guardians at the gateways to the properties or buildings. Perhaps the most famous and obvious temple guardians are those found at the Egyptian temples. In some cases these guardians are 50 feet tall; they surely would have intimidated any who entered. In China, the lion is the traditional temple guardian, holding a specific symbol, the Flower of Life, in his paw. In India, the doorways are protected with sacred symbols that act as the temple “guardians” transforming any harmful energies before they are permitted to enter the temple. In the Jewish tradition, the mezuzah, a scroll with biblical passages on one side and a name of God on the other, is attached to doorways of houses and temples to “initiate” those who enter the property. When installing your own “guardians of the gate,” be sure to acknowledge them whenever you pass by, as the energetic “Guardians” behind the idol or symbols respond to your attention. (I would like to thank Richard Feather Anderson for his insights, wisdom and contributions to my understanding of these elements of Celtic Geomancy.) Christan Hummel has been in communication with the devic realms of Nature since she was a teenager. A pioneer in earth energies exploration, Christan has taught thousands globally how to restore this lost relationship with Nature. She provides a unique synthesis of modern science and ancient wisdom in an easy and understandable manner accessible to us all. www.earthtransitions.com or call 302.375.6823.

Broken Weal © 2010 by Michael Raysses
’m intrigued by subjects beyond my command. Lucid dreaming, moderate Republicans, and power meditation are all concepts that have tickled my fancy without me understanding them, much less knowing whether they even exist. Now I have another entry to add to the list—global soul. What is “global soul?” Is it like worldmusic but subtler? Because if it is, I question how music gets to be “world” music. Isn’t all music world music? It is created in the world, right? But I digress. This kind of inquiry drives me not to the brink of insanity, but to the point of letting go. And that is exactly what I am going to do with global soul—surrender it. Here’s why. I have absolutely no global perspective. Unless you count excursions taken via my View Master. I also have yet to physically travel outside this country. And the little reading I do from the international media tends to suffer from the same bias that has infected the media here: an addiction to tragedy as being the only thing that’s newsworthy. So if I’m to believe what I read about the global state it is that there are lots of ongoing wars, invasions, conflicts, rebellions, and clashes. Throw in the odd insurgency, crisis, and skirmish, and you get a general wash of the condition of things. As I factor in the “soul” aspect of the question, I’m left wrestling with wraiths. Does “soul” connote that part of a living being that is eternal and is commonly held to be separable from the corporeal? Or is it that force that impelled singer James Brown to lift his voice along with his feet in rhythms so spirited that they embodied the very life they suggested? But try as I may, I just don’t see global soul. In its best light, what I see is a series of responses by seemingly enlightened people, reacting to tragedies that are inflicted by crazed zealots preaching their own unique brand of radicalism, be it religious, cultural, or economic. To understand the incomprehensible, I scale down my inquiry while pulling back on my expectations. And though by asking less I am guaranteed as much, it’s a deal I’m willing to make. I’ll surrender global soul if we can at least maintain the public weal. An interesting phrase, “public weal.” It is as au courant as a pair
of go-go boots, as fashionable as a Nehru jacket. It is synonymous with the notion of common good, that there is something out there that is intangible yet has value with nothing to do with you as an individual, but everything to do with you as a part of a greater whole, one in which you have a deep stake. But even public weal and the common good are in dire straits because everyone is too busy experiencing their own private Idaho to even consider them. Technology is one contributing factor, enabling us in the worst possible way. I see it in public places, generally speaking, but in restaurants in particular. Ubiquitous cell phones have given way to all sorts of imperious portable gadgetry with all their attendant capabilities. I recently experienced a dubious first while seated at the counter of a local eatery; a man sitting next to me whipped out his I-Phone and began showing his friend his latest home video, replete with tinny blaring volume. Suddenly, the counter became this man’s living room. I opted out. But people’s behavior is a contributing factor as well. When they go out to eat these days, they act is if they have never left their homes. When I was a kid, going out meant bringing my “A-game,” behavior-wise. When it was time to order, as kids we didn’t even so much as look at a menu unless we got The Nod from our Dad. The Nod was his way of indicating we could order something other than a cheeseburger, all done without a single syllable uttered. And we had to dress for the occasion because my sisters and I weren’t going to reflect poorly on my parents or we quite simply weren’t going to be let out of the house. Recently, at the same counter where I got the unwanted home video screening, I sat next to a child of at least eight who was still in her pajamas, draped in a flowing blanket that spilled everywhere. I won’t even broach the topic of kids that are allowed to keen like wounded animals or to literally run through a restaurant like it was a playground, all done while doting parents turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the greater implications of their parental neglect. I call this phenomenon the Chucky Cheesification of America—we don’t raise the bar for kids to aspire to. We lower it to make it more readily trampled under foot. The public weal is broken. It’s been preempted by the hegemony of technology. It’s been crushed by the errant exaltation of personal liberties at the cost of the common good. And the public domain, that place where it lives, is shrinking as fast as a polar ice cap, reduced to a series of mini-fiefdoms whose permeable borders are defined by people’s personal electronica. The biggest casualty is the vanished global soul, vanquished by atrophy because there is no longer the chance to exercise it, no place for that to happen. We need to refocus in a way that dignifies the public domain. I don’t care if it makes us guilty of putting on appearances. Right now, I could live with the appearance of people treating each other respectfully. Perhaps in making what might arguably be an empty gesture, the act of doing so would leave space for us to subsequently fill in the void with informed intention. The emptiness must now be filled. It requires it. And what better way to do so than with something consistent with its arc and outline—with soul. Healing Hands School of

h o l i s t i c h e a l t h known in the West is Swedish, or Circulatory massage, it is believed that Swedish actually originated from Chinese massage, (known as Tui Na today). Other cultures also have their own styles of massage, the Japanese have Shiatsu and Reiki energy work, with roots in Tendai Buddhism and Shintoism, Thai massage, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and Indian Head massage. Each culture has adapted its own style, and draws from its respective cultural and spiritual belief systems. Speaking of traditions, Healing Hands have some traditions of their own: “Every spring, since 1995, we retreat from the world of technology and hot showers and gather in a protected canyon, held in its natural state. Under century-old oaks by a bubbling creek, we are led in meditations, handcrafts, healing techniques and herbal lore.
ith a plethora of options now available in natural healing, a new awareness has developed around massage. Its status as a mere luxury or indulgence—formerly relegated to the world of spas and retreats, is getting a real makeover. For many, massage still seems like a luxury, as most insurance companies don’t cover it, or if they do, will include a list of exceptions. However, for those who have received massage and have felt the benefits (and for those who are interested in becoming body workers themselves) can understand the vital link between health, healthcare and touch. The movement seems to be heading in the direction of clients and patients being proactive and involved in their own health and wellbeing. Alongside this new element of awareness and shift in priorities, the field of massage therapy is ever growing. Integrative healthcare is one result of such awareness, and it is a wonderful step in combining allopathic medicine with natural, complementary therapies. In San Diego, there are a handful of massage schools. Healing Hands School of Holistic Health is not new to the massage field, and has been teaching massage therapy since 1992. Interestingly, it started in Neha and Paula Curtiss’ station wagon; their “office” a kitchen table. These modest roots have grown into a successful school with two campuses: one based in Escondido, and the other in Laguna Hills, California. Paula, one of its founders, discussed how Healing Hands developed in response to a community need for this type of healing, even before the Department of Education recognized massage therapy as a viable training. There are now large trade schools around the nation that offer massage. Before it was adopted by the Department, there were only independent schools (such as Healing Hands), concentrating solely on teaching the art of massage. The founders’ vision is “to teach therapeutic bodywork where the massage students not only learn the techniques but are inspired by the art and craft of the work. We understood that the student must be able to feel the work; we saw then, and now, the need for the beginner to be both the therapist and the client.” The school has served over 4,800 students, and offers excellent job placement assistance. Curtiss also emphasizes the variety of massage modalities available to students, and how it reflects the multi-cultural aspect of massage itself. Although most well-
“May Healing and Peace Extend from our Hands to Yours” --Paula, Neha, and All of Us at Healing Hands. We eat delicious food, lovingly prepared. We sit at the fire and bring our voices together in song and laughter. We carry wood, water, and the need to connect.” The school’s philosophy also states that holistic health doesn’t ever have to be in contradiction to Western healing methods. It incorporates a variety of different modalities from different cultures, and sees itself as a community of healing. One special element of the school is the various partnerships and participation with community organizations and events. It has participated in various triathlons and the work of many charity organizations, and the curriculum offers community service experience as well. In this way, the community at Healing Hands is a part of a larger community. Prospective students should know that in addition to the standard Massage Therapy and Holistic Health Practitioner programs, the school offers 1700 hours of additional modalities, some of which include: pregnancy massage, Thai massage, energy therapy, trigger point therapy, and even geriatric, and hospital-based massage.

I
GlobalSoul
grew up in a little village in Eastern Nigeria. My father was a Christian pastor, so I was instilled with the idea by Jerri Jheto of loving your brother as you love yourself. I got into music through my grandmother’s influence. She was part of a group of women—singers and dancers in the village—and they would come to the compound every evening to play the cowbells and sing and dance around the fireplace. This is how music came into my life. I had been playing congas in my father’s church, and when the piano player left, I was asked to learn piano. I realized when I was very little that by being an artist, I am the unconscious mind of my race. Because I saw how powerful music was—how powerful creativity was and is—I wanted to use music amid all that was happening in my life, especially as my country was at war with itself. As I grew up and started to find myself, I became aware that everything was rough and bad. That era really shaped who I wanted to be. I always knew that it was good for everyone to be free and I wondered why some are free and some not; why some get to eat and some do not. I was always inquisitive and my thoughts were global—they were never just about myself, but always structured around how I could aspire to be a better servant to the community. My people have used music to elevate every moment of their lives. When we were under European rule, music gave us hope that tomorrow would be better. My grandmother’s fireside circle was everything to me. That’s where the milestones in our community, like birth and death, were translated into songs and dances. Special songs were even created to pass the time that it took to cook our meals. I was still in primary school when Fela Kuti came from London and started his band, Africa ‘70. From my house to his house was less than 50 yards away, so I saw him every day. Fela’s music was wonderful; to hear it was a spiritual experience; we felt empowered by it and we held our heads high. I would be there when Fela was writing a new song, then he would call for rehearsal and we’d hang out at the Shrine, thoroughly enjoying the great band. I stayed there many times to see how he worked. He was a machine. In the 1970s, I was there when the army tore down his commune and threw his mother to her death from a high window. I was there for the Movement of the People Party he founded, and then when he was falsely jailed. I loved Fela like I loved God, because he was what I wanted to be and I wanted to say it the way it should be said. He challenged the government in a way that’s never been done and that was wonderful. In 1984, after I finished recording Aura with King Sunny Ade, Sonny Okosun was going on an American tour and wanted me to play bass. My first experience of the diaspora was the feeling I had of stepping off the plane in New York, and the cold hitting my skin. I wanted to go back to Africa right there and then! I didn’t want anything to do with America at that point. But a friend lent me his jacket and encouraged me to disembark. When I hit the ground, what first seized me was that every block had a church. I said to myself, “Wow, this is where God lives!” At each church I saw a liquor store nearby. That really blew my mind. Coming from Africa, I realized that we have such a different way of life and upbringing. I started to see that the love and the commonality I knew back in Africa—the idea that the child gets brought up by the whole village—wasn’t the case in America. It affected me deeply to find myself in a culture filled with people who seemed only to care about themselves. Finally, what brought me peace toward America was how blessed it is with diversity; to have all nations represented in this country means that every bit of
V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
creativity God has given to each nation, America can now claim, transformed, as its own. All those ideas together have made America great, therefore its diversity, and not its arsenal, is what makes it a superpower. The Afrobeat sound that I’m doing today on Illegal Alien, I utilized from the very beginning. But I couldn’t find a home at a major label nor could I find a public hungry for reggae. Thank God for Paul Simon’s Graceland, because that sound was exactly what I’d brought forth in 1984. Illegal Alien marks the return of a prodigal son who wants to make inroads back into Africa; to continue what Fela has done with the hope that others will pick up on it and most importantly, that one day the people will understand and come together. Music is very powerful. I’ve always said that music is the one thing God doesn’t do by Himself; instead He lets the musicians sit down and entertain Him. It’s so beautiful that in this country as I’ve lived my life, I’ve met wonderful human beings in the spirit of music and creativity. I couldn’t have asked for a greater gift. s we go to press, the world is going through massive changes: earthquakes, tsunamis, and now volcanoes. Scientists have observed that every time man has made an evolutionary leap, it has been informed by climate change. If you reframe whatever big transition may be going on in your life to something that is even bigger than you individually, it may help to see that these challenges, these inner earthquakes and lifequakes are all a part of collective change. We are indeed quaking up! Dear Dr. Toni: My thirteen-year-old son doesn’t listen to me anymore. Not only will he not listen to requests I make, but he is also not doing well in school. He ranks in the 95th percentile on standardized tests but only cares about being with his peers and hanging out. His father whom I am divorced from undermines my authority with him constantly. What should I do? Frustrated in Beverly Hills Dear Frustrated: Your son is at an age when he requires male authority. It is natural for him to rebel against maternal authority because he is looking for independence from his mother. Do some research. Find the Big Brother Organization nearby and other community groups where men volunteer their time. Call the Rotary or Kiwanis Club. They may have resources that can help support a different non-profit group every year. If you can afford it, pay for a male tutor who can also be a guide. The colleges often have boards that you can post ads on. Lastly, set boundaries so that he knows he cannot disrespect you without consequences. Be consistent. If he disobeys or doesn’t do his homework, then there’s no YouTube or cell phone, for example. Stay connected to him even when he is shutting you out. These are tough years, 13-15, and you cannot do this alone. It really does take a village. Get a support team. Dear Dr. Toni: This is embarrassing for me to talk about. I think I am addicted to porn and I am a woman. I don’t know of any women who visit porn sites and spends their evenings

watching movies and masturbating. I haven’t been in a relationship for five years. I have a respectable job. No one would know that I have this addiction. I am educated and make great money. I was watching a program on sex addiction and they said that it is most common in women who were sexually abused as a child. I wasn’t abused but I was raised by my father and he had a lot of women coming in and out of our house when I was growing up. I don’t really see the connection between my watching soft porn films
Dear Georgia: You raise an important question. When does a behavior become an addiction? Is it frequency that determines it? One of the criteria for addiction is that it interferes with your life somehow: job performance, relationships, health, etc. What is more subtle is the type of addiction that allows you to perform in the world and doesn’t interfere with your health so that all that is affected is your personal evolution. When we retreat from the world of intimate relationships, it prevents us from getting hurt but the long term cost is that we do not grow as much as is possible in partnerships. How did the last relationship end? Witnessing your father bringing women in and out through a revolving door did not model intimacy for you. Sex was seen as something very superficial and non-committal. You don’t mention what happened to your mother but I would submit that you learned a traditional male style of relating to sexuality. Perhaps you are afraid of acting out your father’s behavior. Risking that promiscuity in this day and age could be dangerous. Therefore, this compulsion may be a mask for other feelings that you are avoiding at night such as loneliness. I would recommend that before you sit down to watch a movie or surf the sites, that you take 10 minutes and just sit on your sofa and breathe. Notice what feelings come up. Don’t analyze them. Just witness the feelings and direct your breath into the place in your body where you are experiencing these sensations. Now go back to the first time ever that you felt these feelings and simply breathe into whatever emotions come up with the memory. Now, imagine that you can add someone to the memory this time—a figure that has a goddess-like energy full of light and compassion. Allow her to speak to you. What does she want you to know? If there is no answer, ask her for a symbol that represents her gift to you. Do this exercise every night for seven days and see if anything changes. If not, perhaps seeing a therapist who specializes in addiction or going to a Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting may be supportive. Some people there are dealing more with sexual obsession than acting out. You may need community in your life and/or you may need to be with people who understand your situation. Great healing can come from meeting the feelings underneath this compulsion. hile all human beings experience pain, I am not one who seeks it. Since pain inevitably comes at various times in life and in myriad forms, I try to savor the pain-free days and make them last. That’s why I was never attracted to tattoos or any other form of self-inflicted, aesthetic mutilation. However, a recent experience has made me see tattoos in a different light. I was fortunate enough to witness the last remaining traditional and indigenous tattoo artist at work in the Philippines. Untouched by what we describe as civilization, progress, or any form of modernity, the art of tattooing is deeply imbedded in the indigenous Filipino culture. Centuries ago, head-hunting warriors who captured and killed members of the enemy tribe were awarded special tattoos, usually placed on the chest. Considered badges of honor, these tattoos signified great strength and courage. In more recent history, the last surviving warrior to be awarded this tattoo successfully subdued a marauding Japanese soldier in World War II. However, tattoos were not reserved only for warriors. Researchers attribute the tattoo as a symbolic rite of passage for both males and females. Adolescence, marriage, pregnancy, and birth all warrant specific tattoos which add depth to aesthetic adornment, signifying an expression of the tribe’s cultural norms and a successful passage from one stage of life to another. My husband, Rey, recently received a tribal tattoo to represent his culture and serve as a reminder of his surviving heritage as we made our way back to America. Rey was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer who worked with Igorots, an indigenous, ethno-linguistic tribe in the Philippines. After numerous projects and term extensions, he dreamed of getting an authentic, traditional tattoo to take back to the States with him. Being Filipino-American, it was a way to stay connected to his roots. The tattoo would also signify the end of a significant phase of his life and the beginning of a new one. Being curious, I tagged along. The grueling six-hour trip from the mountain capital of Bontoc to the tiny town of Tinglayan took us on a road not meant for vehicles of any kind. The province is populated by Kalingas, known to be the fiercest and the most aggressive of the Igorots. However, they all seemed very nice to me. Our guide, Francis, welcomed us to his home and served us supper for free. There are no restaurants or grocery stores, just a small canteen that opens for lunch for truck drivers delivering supplies. Francis led our six-hour hike across rice terraces and crystal-clear springs to the remote village of Buscalan, home of Fong-od, the last known surviving and practicing Kalinga tattoo artist. The village was comprised of raised wooden huts, wild pigs and chickens lived underneath. There was no electricity or running water; the water source was a pump in the middle of the village. The residents still lived off the land, raising livestock and planting rice and vegetables. Many adults and almost all of the elders wore their tattoos proudly on their arms, chests, and faces. For the women, the tattoos looked like articles of clothing, covering their arms all the way to their shoulder blades and backs. Most women wore colorful antique beads passed on from generation to generation, some pieces dating back to the first Chinese traders who reached the Philippines by ship centuries ago. Fong-od, 87, was a frail-looking woman, but she could make any grown man cry. After a lunch of rice and watercress, she quickly started on Rey’s back, gathering soot from the bottom of a pot and collecting it on a coconut shell to serve as ink. With a big thorn from a pomelo plant, she slowly tapped out his tattoo, one painful dot at a time. The pomelo thorn was attached to the end of a stick, while another stick served as a makeshift hammer, pounding the thorn into Rey’s back. The whole process took almost four excruciating hours. The result was an image of ferns and a centipede, which, according to researchers, provides protection from illness. Fong-od’s skill and strength were evident in the strikingly beautiful tattoo. Best of all, it was free from infection, as it healed within days. Fong-od was so shy that she hesitated to charge us, and would giggle when asked about the fee. We negotiated with Francis to give her 1,300 pesos, which is around $25. This V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

would cover our meals and an overnight stay in her hut (for me, Rey, and Ruel, our Igorot friend/translator/photographer). It amazes me how the entire culture survives to this day. I asked some of the kids in the village if they were interested in tattooing, since Fong-od never married and has no children to pass her art down to. All of them shook their heads adamantly; they thought tattoos were old-fashioned and reserved for the elderly. How ironic—the village continues to exist without the comforts of the modern world, yet people’s basic needs are met; they seem happy and healthy, uncluttered and unburdened by over-consumption. Still, it may be only a matter of time before the younger generation decides to pack up and move to a bigger town. The indigenous tattoo goes beyond the expression of artistic talent and aesthetic form; it is a repository of culture and a symbol of a centuries-old tradition that is threatened by extinction. Luckily, I have my husband’s back to look at daily as a reminder that such a place, such a people, and such a way of life still thrives to this day. T Embrac ing Diversit y Through Dance and Fit ness at MIX Studio by Nadia Dahdouh

o be healthy and physically fit can involve a lot of different things. Simply hitting the gym every day or only focusing on one type of physical activity does not necessarily mean that you are maximizing your body’s full potential. For example, going for a run is great for you, but adding other forms of physical activity, such as dance, can really strengthen your body. And when paired with something like yoga, you’re getting a complete workout experience for your body, as well as your mind—or a nice, well-rounded mix. Lesa G. Williams, owner of MIX studio in the Rolando area of San Diego, offers just that: dance, personal training, and yoga classes. It’s a one-stop-shop. I had the opportunity to interview Lesa to find out more about her studio and her background. MIX’s name has a deeper meaning than just the services it offers, though. Lesa is of mixed ethnicity: Her father is AfricanAmerican and her mother Filipino and Spanish. So this idea of being a “mix” has been a consistent theme in Lesa’s life. She explains to me that she has always embraced her mixed heritage, due to her parents being open about the subject. Stereotypes don’t hold any weight for Lesa. “I was exposed to a lot of different races and people growing up,” she explains, and says she always knew people for who they were as individuals, not what races they were. And when faced with people who stereotyped her, she has had the same attitude—to simply be herself. “I had to just be Lesa—as opposed to ‘the black girl,’” she says, explaining that it’s about who you are, not what your race is. “Growing up, I always felt that learning from a lot of different people made for a well-rounded person,” she explains. And this well-roundedness is exactly what she wanted to integrate into her studio. She wanted to create a place where all different types of people could come in to work on their bodies and minds. Lesa is a dance and yoga instructor, and certified personal trainer. “I like to describe myself as, ‘the boot camp dancer who believes yoga can change the world,’” she says. Dance classes came first when Lesa was just a toddler. Needless to say, she continued on with dancing and has experience in many different styles such as tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and burlesque to name some of

them, but she enjoys contemporary jazz the most, and has a special love for ballet. Lesa even danced competitively when she was 19. A bit later on, she hit a bump in the road on her dance journey. Just as she was about to major in dance at UCSD, she injured her ankle. She wasn’t able to dance which was a scary reality for her. But through yoga, Lesa was able to heal her injury. “From that, my love of yoga grew,” she explains, and says in addition to yoga saving her dream to continue pursuing dance, it has also provided the mental clarity she needs. “My life’s always been busy, because I’m always trying to reach certain goals whether they are in business or education; so for me, yoga is the way that I’m able to balance everything.” Because she is a dance and yoga instructor, and personal trainer, Lesa believes in many types of physical activity. “If someone’s pushing weights and can also stretch in certain poses and have flexibility, that person is technically more physically fit than someone who is only able to push a lot of weight,” she says. Lesa’s belief in having this mix of physical aptitude is what led to the creation of her studio, MIX. She explains that earlier on, she would have to go to multiple places to meet all of her dance and fitness needs because at the time, most places didn’t offer multiple services at their locations. Lesa wanted her studio to provide that for her clients. A few of the various classes offered at MIX include yoga, contemporary jazz, boot camp, and the “Mix Technique,” a class Lesa created exclusively for her studio. The Mix Technique incorporates ballet, Pilates, and yoga. “It seems to be a favorite at MIX. You don’t have to have taken ballet for 10 years to do it, but you could have taken ballet for 10 years to appreciate it and get a workout as well,” she says. MIX even offers the “Yoga Winedown” class once a month, where you do
c u l t u r e ambient yoga and then enjoy a glass of wine after the class. MIX opened in August of 2009, and Lesa says that so far, her dream of having a variety of clients is coming to life. Her clients are anywhere from 18 to 60 years old, and are at all levels of experience—from people who have never danced before in their lives to seasoned dancers with professional aspirations, and from beginning yogis to advanced yogis. “I definitely want to welcome all people,” Lesa says. Lesa G. Williams trained in dance at The Ailey School in New York, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Dance at the University of California, San Diego. She is completing her Master’s degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific University this month. For more information, call MIX studio at 619.889.0061 or visit www.lmgdanceandfitness.com

e a r t h w a t c h ustainability and utilitarianism are becoming hot topics these days. There are new and inventive (as well as ancient) ways of creating a greener world. Alternative methods for society’s growth and repair are entering the focus of mainstream idealism. In this giant exchange, excellent sources to boost the realization of sustainable living are working their way into the collective awareness. One of the most awe-inspiring possibilities toward re-envisioning human life on every scale lies in the power of bamboo. It is right up there with free energy, hemp, and clean water. Bamboo has the capability of significantly improving our world. Today, one billion people worldwide rely on bamboo as an energy source and raw material for either income or shelter. While on an artistic mission to share my passion for bamboo I have found it to be a very special plant in relation to the human equation. Bamboo’s diversity guarantees a widespread nativity across the globe, as it thrives in a range of climates—from the warm, humid tropics to high alpine zones that get yearly snowfall. The dazzling variety of bamboo further accounts for the versatility of its uses as well as the wide aesthetic appeal. Its silica content makes bamboo a unique material, giving it the power to bend without breaking. It is as strong as steel yet far more malleable. The structural quality of bamboo is comparable to that of reinforced concrete. In construction, bamboo and cement are a winning combination, as bamboo is often used as a replacement for rebar. Bamboo has a rich history in the Eastern world. For preindustrialized societies, the native grass provided food and shelter and was used to construct myriad essential tools for many

aspects of day-to-day living. The earliest form of paper, discovered by archeologists, was made from the leaves that surround bamboo shoots and was used for simple record keeping. Bamboo’s most famous and descriptive nickname is “The Miracle Plant.” To the early Chinese, the trade of bamboo goods was an economic boon, earning the noble grass yet another nickname—“The Prosperity Plant.” Chairs, baskets, paper, mats and musical instruments were common merchandise in the paradigm of bamboo trade. For hundreds of years, Chinese medicine has made use of the various parts of different species of bamboo. In Japan, it has served as an herbal cleanser for the liver, especially for heavy sake drinkers, while bamboo vinegar foot patches, which sponge toxins out of the body as people sleep, have gained widespread attention in recent years. The bamboo shoot has been the staple of many Eastern cultures for centuries, and its nutritional benefits are impressive. Bamboo is low in calories but rich in protein, fiber, and germanium. Its branches and leaves are actually a healthy provision when fed to livestock. The extract of bamboo leaves, a powerful antioxidant by itself, can be added to foods for a truly natural preservative and also to brewed teas as a means of extending shelf life. This ancient flora makes for a compelling alternative to paper, plastic, and metal; and it has been used as a supplier of electricity. It is an alternative to cotton (and even perhaps, hemp), since it can be broken down into a wondrous textile for all manner of stitchery. While bamboo pulp is processed differently than most other organic textiles, it is generally very cost efficient and environmentally friendly. Bamboo clothing has a softer feel than flax, acrylic, and cotton, and has been compared to silk or cashmere. Interestingly, the fibers contain an antimicrobial agent that inhibits body odor by preventing the cultivation of bacteria. With their regulating effect on body temperature, bamboo bed sheets are also valuable household items. As a crop, bamboo is sustainable, fast growing, and annually renewable. The fact that it is the fastest growing plant on earth and can be harvested without killing it account for an outstanding efficiency when used in green farming. Not only does bamboo grow fast—it also regenerates quickly. After a full-grown plant has been harvested, it will attain maximum height again within a year. Growing 60 to 100 feet in a single growing season is impressive, but its strength and vitality make it a true superplant. Some species are able to grow to their full height, season after season, for as long as they live. Given proper circumstances, a single specimen can produce nine miles of quality, usable poles throughout the duration of its lifetime. Continuous harvesting every several years actually improves the health of the plant. Because of its fast growth, bamboo can consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen extremely efficiently. Two and a half acres of bamboo can consume 12 tons of carbon dioxide per year—almost three and a half times the amount that the typical growing tree forest consumes annually. Many people are unaware that bamboo has the power to create a cleaner, healthier environment. The impact it can have on the air we breathe offers a strong incentive for moving toward a probamboo world. All types of bamboo grow in grid-like, interlocking root systems. Because of this, the plant remains nearly impenetrable to outside disturbances. The patchwork of roots creates a very effective watershed-protective mechanism, threading the soil together in places prone to earthquakes and mudslides. This allows bamboo to withstand massive variations in weather, and it has great resiliency from other

environmental assaults as well. As it is literally a type of grass, bamboo may be heralded as an aesthetically pleasing and attractive aspect of gardens of every kind. A bamboo grove creates a natural sheltering from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, and lowers the visual intensity of sunlight. The plant usually grows without special soil needs, and there are some species that can grow well in the shade, though all bamboo require much more water than typical houseplants. Miniature varieties can be planted in pots on the rooftop of just about any home, apartment, or office building. It is possible that planting urban rooftops with evergreen dwarf varieties of bamboo would cut city pollution in half. Bamboo can also be planted in backyard gardens and as borders between homesteads or next to factory sludge pools where it will reduce water pollution as it soaks up heavy metals and liquid wastes, while also helping in the repair of the ecosystem. There are places in the world where bamboo is actually employed for the specific purpose of sponging sewage. As a peerless erosion control agent, its net-like integrated root system creates an effective mechanism for watershed protection by stitching the soil together along fragile riverbanks, sloping hillsides, deforested areas, and in places prone to mudslides and earthquakes. Throughout much of the U.S., cattle that graze along the edges of waterways trample fragile streamside ecology and pollute the water with urine and manure. If bamboo were planted along both sides of a stream, it would serve to hold the dirt banks in place during floods. The stalks would provide an effective barrier against foraging cattle and the grove itself would offer shade, while helping to purify manure runoff from pastures. Bamboo’s interwoven root system, along with its ability to clump together in thickets, makes it a great alternative to expensive fencing. The plants can be situated along roads and freeways and they are great sound barriers. An established grove can also provide a thick crash barrier to slow cars down should they wander off the road, potentially saving lives. When damaged, such a barrier quickly repairs itself by growing new culms. And of course, bamboo’s ability to remove carbon dioxide from the air is extremely valuable for protection against smog and exhaust. Bamboo is a superior source for bio-fuel and is an ideal biomass particularly due to its speedy rate of replenishment. More porous than wood, it contains certain minerals which render it a much more effective fuel material than coal or oil as well as an excellent charcoal too. Furthermore, bamboo contains considerably less atmosphere-damaging nitrogen and sulfur than either coal or oil, and when it is burned in pellet stoves or in briquettes, bamboo emits a significantly lower amount of polluting carbon into the air than does wood. Bamboo is a logical alternative for 7/10ths of all the wood products made in the United States. Proper harvesting of bamboo does not kill the plant. It is in fact an audaciously prolific grass, as each of its stalks contains an independent DNA strand, so that even the tiniest slivers of bamboo can re-grow into new plants when placed in fertile ground. Another benefit of bamboo is that it doesn’t need to be uprooted when it is harvested and can, as it grows back again, continue to provide nutrients to the land and cohesion to the soil. Bamboo poles allow virtually limitless uses because they are a versatile raw material for arts and crafts, as well as any number of household items that can be created from various parts of the plant as a whole. Technological developments have made it possible to convert raw bamboo culms into lumber and plywood, so that practically anything usually constructed with wood can also be made out of bamboo. Wide arrays of household items, many rivaling and surpassing their V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
e a r t h w a t c h tree-dependent counterparts in beauty and utility, are available on a worldwide scale now. A fine example would be floorboards that are made out of bamboo and are surprisingly comfortable when exercising on or even lying down upon because they are softer than hardwoods and cheaper to produce. Yet another superior bamboo-constructed alternative to the standard normal material is the so-called “ply-boo,” which is two to three times the strength of plywood. Bamboo houses are known for their safety, as they tend to be highly resistant to earthquakes, thanks to the pliability and strength of bamboo poles. Building with bamboo is much different than building with wood, but architects and designers from every continent are coming together to share what they have learned about working with this amazing plant. Whether as a medicine, a source of nutrition, an ingredient of green homes, or an instrument or tool; whether it is pleasing to the eye, cleaning the air and water or a sustainable building block of a society, bamboo’s potential is truly endless. Bamboo is also a fun way to green your world! Now is the hour for Bamboo Power! Blair LeMire, PhD is a musician, writer, and producer whose first cartoon aired on the Nickelodeon Network in 2002. LeMire founded the non-profit H.O.P.E. which intends to produce solution oriented environmental documentary films. www.HealOurPlanetEarth.org An avid vegetarian and lover of the earth, LeMire is perhaps best known as the “Bamboo Brother” and has spent the past decade spreading the word about the amazing sustainability and power of the super grass “Bamboo.” Visit www. bamboopower.com for more information or email: contact@bamboopower.com

Aries: High Priestess (4 of Pentacles) 3/21-4/19 You may need to shift your perspective; from relying on your conscious thoughts or material resources to trusting your intuitive, emotional senses. Although it may sometimes feel like physical effort is more effective than spiritual trust, there is actually a much stronger force within you that you’re always capable of tapping into. Begin by withdrawing from the activity of everyday events and there, you can realign with your inner self. This is not a good time for any extravagant purchases. You may also want to take caution around loans or other financial documents. Taurus: Hermit (3 of Wands) 4/20-5/21 Time alone is often the best remedy for recovery. Within the silence of solitude, you can clearly hear the wisdom of your inner voice. Feelings of emptiness often provoke a search for deeper meaning. If you can reach beyond the uncomfortable feelings, you have the opportunity for real personal growth. However, you must first focus on what you want to achieve. Clarify your goals and find authentic ways to express yourself. Speak from the depths of your being. The Full Moon on the 27th brings a night of mystery. Allow yourself to wander off the beaten path and discover something intriguing. Gemini: Sun (9 of Pentacles) 5/22 – 6/21 Confidence must be recognized and honored both in yourself and in others. If you don’t believe in yourself, how will anyone else? Developing a deeper awareness of your Self requires that you become less dependent upon what you have and more concerned with who you are. By the middle of the month, you will uncover a brilliant treasure–one that cannot be destroyed, but can most certainly be employed. If you have been thinking about a career change, a major move, or a risky business venture, now is your time to strike! Let your conscience be your guide. Cancer: Moon (8 of Swords) 6/22 – 7/22 You may be feeling trapped by a deep sense of anxiety. It may feel like you are doomed to face results you aren’t ready for. Although there may be no obvious reason for this emotional mayhem, it might relieve you to know that this, too, will pass. Right now, your journey is to venture into the dark places, recall the painful memories, and move beyond the residue of the past. There is meaning in the bewilderment of your journey, but to gain that wisdom, you must be willing to sit with the discomfort. This month, things that seem too good to be true are just that! Leo: Justice (9 of Cups) 7/23 – 8/23 You may need to re-evaluate what brings you pleasure or fulfillment, as it seems there are some discrepancies in your life. These could be as simple as your taste in food being incompatible with your health goals, or your choice of entertainment not being affordable to your budget. Balance is the key. Honest self-analysis will help you realize the areas in which you prefer instant gratification as superficial fulfillment. Understanding the motivations behind your wishes brings more awareness to your life. The more truthful you are with yourself, the greater happiness you’ll have in life. Virgo: Lovers (8 of Wands) 8/24 – 9/22 You may be dealing with the consequences of an impetuous decision you made in the past. Whether this decision was good or bad is not the point, but rather what motivated your choice in the first place. Own up to any mistakes and the outcome will be lighter. A steamy attraction could easily lead you down a path you least expect. Keep in mind every choice has a consequence even if no one finds out. This is a great time to ignite passion in the area of your life that might be lacking. Be adventurous and surprise that special someone.
Libra: Tower (Page of Pentacles) 9/23 – 10/23 In the blink of an eye, your entire life can change; and if you resist holding on to the past, you’ll be capable of much greater things. Something or someone you are responsible for is in a deconstruction phase; the nonessentials will fall away, leaving room for renovation. Your impulse may be to dig your heels in deeper but that will only cause more problems. Accept what you can in the moment and let go of the rest. There will be an intense time for a young person close to you; reach out, but don’t attempt to save anyone. Scorpio: Chariot (King of Pentacles) 10/24 – 11/22 The circumstances you encounter are, in part, the result of an unconscious process. You attract what you think about most. The test however, is in how you react to these experiences. Focus on consciously directing your energy instead of being driven by impulse. Faced with a moral challenge, it would be wise to think before you act, although a situation may appear trivial, the consequences are enormous. Temptation will play a big role in this, so remember to act from a place of integrity. In relationship, infatuation evaporates, revealing the other person’s true colors. Do you still like what you see? Sagittarius: Magician (6 of Swords) 11/23 – 12/21 Potential is unlimited when you understand how to influence a situation; there are countless ways of achieving your goals. However, when these goals are limited by a negative belief that you’re not capable or deserving, a conflict develops. Examine how your blocks may be self-made. As challenges arrive, look at what you’re already doing well and build upon that. An opportunity offered at the beginning of the month entails some risk-taking. Be confident in your power and it will work out by the end of the month. Travel this month brings favorable experiences–pay attention to synchronicities! Capricorn: Temperance (Knight of Cups) 12/22– 1/20 Life is a delicate balance that demands constant physical, emotional, and spiritual adjustment. Your compassion leads you to the poor souls of the world, and unfortunately, this has begun contaminating your other relationships. Someone close to you needs more attention than you have; stop for a moment and acknowledge them, but then move on. A nagging problem is less of a quandary than you realize; ask yourself what you’re getting out of the situation and you will discover the purpose for it. Problems yield important messages when you solve them creatively. Aquarius: Hanged Man (5 of Wands) 1/21 – 2/18 Trapped in a conflict beyond your control? What could be better than to let go and fall into the abyss? As hard as it may be, you must trust that your current entanglements are not as bad as you think. In fact, disagreeing with others will actually free up a new point of view, but first you must be willing to let go of some of your opinions. The beginning of the month will present a problem; by the end, you will not only have solved the issue, you will have learned something new. It will be better to postpone important decisions until next month. Pisces: Wheel of Fortune (10 of Pentacles) 2/19 – 3/20 Lady Luck has called your number and you’re up for some good fortune. Luck is really nothing more than being prepared when an opportunity crosses your path. Your diligent planning for a business venture is about to pay off, and what you’ve set in motion has gained enough momentum to push you to the next level. Don’t be surprised if you receive unexpected money at the beginning of the month; if you use it as seed money, you might even grow a cash crop. In other words: it’s a great time to invest!

GLOBAL SOUL by Joseph Costa, PhD
H
ow many lifetimes have you lived on Earth? When was the last time you came to Earth to live—to experience human life? Did you know that you were going to inhabit a place that would be chaotic and violent? Did you really come to save Earth from destruction? Where and how can we get answers to these kinds of questions? There were times on Earth that were natural and peaceful; there were also times of violence and destruction where pain, fear and death were rampant. Past lives investigations reveal personal and collective stages of life repeating, perhaps as ways in which to learn the lessons of life—individuals and cultures both. Some past lives reflect simple everyday living. Others reveal secrets of destructive and violent experiences. I lived through America’s Great Depression. Hunger and breadlines were my childhood. As a youth, I was marched in uniform; I crossed the Atlantic, invaded France, was blown up in Germany, took prisoners to Russia and lost my family in a divorce. Now, I am a psychology-trained healer of sorts—I take clients into past lives so that they can find the connections as to why they have cancer, perhaps, or why parts of their bodies are sick or why they need guidance about what to do next. More often than not, investigating past lives reveals the secret to what the Soul Being has been up to and what it may be doing in the near future. Some of my clients in this life are just everyday people, yet in other lives they led soldiers into battle or saved villages from extinction. One thing is obvious from all the years and all the people (around the globe) I have had the opportunity to work with, in past life investigations: They all range over the Earth as Global Souls. What have I discovered from those I have ‘followed’ in past lives? The Soul Being of everyone is far more than the meager acting out each one does in life. I was there to see and smell the piled-up bodies of Soul lives in 1945 Germany. I walked around angry and helpless as hollow eyes in decaying bodies begged me for the Oneness that I could not give. My eyes were crying as I pointed my rifle at their torturers—this made me want to kill. But I just sat down and cried. Slaughtered soul bodies lay all about and I tried to reason how one human
r e g i o n a l could do such a thing to another, and on such a tremendous scale. The magnitude of so much death was beyond understanding. The fact that communities—made up of many humble men and women from the towns and villages, who refused to see the butchery and slaughter—was astonishing to me. I saw German-made movies of the butchering and tried to understand how a cultured nation could participate in the slaughter of millions. But what troubled me the most was how the Jews could calmly yet stoically go to their deaths; so many holding hands and boldly and without panic. I could not grasp the meaning of this. What was there in them that seemed to give themselves over to death—by the hundreds daily! What was it—is it—of the Soul that could be a party to the slaughter of mankind—day in and day out? I asked that question again and again. I could see in their dying eyes, a resolve of, “You have finally come to save us.” That reminded me of what I said when I saw those eyes pleading with me from the piles of dead and dying. “Jesus,” I cried out. “Oh my God, we are too late—my Jesus!” But there is an awesomeness to the awakening and realization of the Oneness of the Global Soul. You and I are a part of the Global Soul. Every lifetime you have ventured onto Earth was with purpose. Whether the lifetime was made up of twisted bodies and pain or majestic glory as a leader or giver of life, you and I have been a part of “All that is—the Oneness of being of all life.” I am an elderly man of today and on another day in another life I died as a woman in childbirth. You may be of crippled body as you read this, but in our hearts you—we—know that you have been in a life of physical perfection once. Why all this senseless pain? There is a purpose. All of these lives we venture through have meaning. This is learning to be of Oneness. I was twenty-one years old and I have not been to church in years, except for the day I got married—just before we went charging across the Atlantic Ocean to France. As I write this in 2010, I am still trying to understand the essence of the Global Soul of today. World Healer Institute 4th Annual Conference, June 17-20th. The Language of the Global Soul Hearing and Embracing our Feelings and Needs by James Anthony Ellis
I
t’s an early April evening in Del Mar, California. As the sun sets on the Pacific, in perfect view from a living room window, a group of 22 friendly faces exchange greetings in this home-by-the-sea, which is full of warmth, camaraderie and just a touch of anxious anticipation. Participants take seats in a cozy circle of couches and folding chairs. A slim gentleman with gracious eyes and shoulder-length gray hair extends greetings to those arriving. The gentleman, Scott Catamas, places his hands in a bag behind his chair and says, “Let me find my friends here.” Out come two hand puppets—one meanfaced jackal (representing our attacking, judging nature) and the other a gentleheart giraffe (representing our compassionate nature). Such is the setting of a nonviolent communication (NVC) introductory group, a place where people can let go of their judgments and labels, and simply speak and listen using the heartopening language of the global soul—one that speaks from the common lifeaffirming forces: our feelings and our needs. As explained by Catamas—an NVC teacher and life coach—the model for nonviolent communication (or compassionate communication) gives people “a cross-cultural, non-denominational set of tools where we learn to consciously choose connection over separation.” NVC focuses on listening to others’ feelings

and needs on any matter, rather than analyzing, diagnosing, labeling, accusing, or judging; no matter how loud, aggressive, or attacking the offending words may appear on the surface. Says Catamas, “The NVC tools help us go beyond reaction and to think in any situation: What am I telling myself; what am I feeling; what am I needing right now?” At the core foundation of the NVC model, (developed in the 1960s by clinical psychologist Dr. Marshall Rosenberg), there exists four basic parts: observation, feelings, needs, and request. You first observe an experience in your life without evaluation or analysis; next, you express the feelings which these observations evoke; then you express a need connected with these feelings, especially when that need is unmet. Finally, you have an option to make a specific and “doable” request of another person to help that need be met, without it being in the form of a demand. So instead of using language that blames (“you make me feel invisible”), or evaluates (“you are ignoring me”), or labels (“you are mean”), those who practice the nonviolent model would be responsible for their feelings and the source of those feelings which are namely their own unmet needs (“I feel sad because I am needing some understanding”). Akasha Rose, a member of the San Diego NVC community (SDNVC), notes that it is our needs that bond us as humans, no matter our differences, and they reveal a global connection. “Our needs connect us to all of humanity,” she says. “They are what arise in us to give shape to our lives; they are what connect us to each other; they are what makes us human.” So where does all the miscommunication come from? According to many NVC proponents, the current models of relationship—such as from schools, parenting, or office dynamics—reveal dominating hierarchical structures where one person

leverages over another with right and wrong concepts that can be either rewarded or punished...a far cry from the NVC model where everyone is equal in being heard and valued. David McCain, an SDNVC member says, “Current structures are motivated by the people at the top who get their needs met at the expense of everyone else. Square pegs are forced into round holes. Pretty soon we learn to clamp down our needs. We learn that needs aren’t valuable, and we cause trouble if we speak up.” Scott Masters, a member of a monthly NVC group in North Park, is one who sees that societal programming has made communication difficult. “We are conditioned to be judgmental of ourselves and others,” Masters says. “It’s easy to get off track. The challenge is to be disciplined by staying connected to the NVC principles so they become natural.” Afshin Alan Farr, a participant who is present for Catamas’ practice group, started learning NVC after his divorce two years ago, at a time when he wanted to become a better communicator. “I have been a really bad listener, so learning this has helped me in the process of listening to others before I react. I’m still a bad listener, but I’m getting better.” The impact of NVC has reached every continent; there are 250 certified NVC trainers in 35 countries. The work has taken Marshall Rosenberg into war-torn, impoverished countries and into the heart of the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts. With thousands of groups in 100 countries, including over a dozen in San Diego County, the impact of his work is felt on scales large and small. Though the influence is widespread, students say there can be challenges in using the model. One challenge comes from those friends and mates who are not accustomed to this style of communication, and will balk when someone is using the four-step model on them. Jeff Brown, an NVC certified trainer and director of a center in Columbus, Ohio, goes so far as to tell his students not to apply the model at home since 9 times out of 10 they could get a negative response from those believing that they are being manipulated by a psychological mind-game. “I teach them to develop their own internal consciousness and practice it internally first,” Brown says. “Gradually and eventually this will transform how you naturally communicate with others.” To help alleviate miscommunication, Brown brings in principles from the teachings of “Living Energies of Needs”, or LEN. An evolution of the NVC model
l i v i n g a r t s brought forth by four NVC trainers. LEN exists within the paradigm of the NVC model, yet expands to consider the energy that is behind the words being used in the practice. Susan Skye, co-founder of LEN, concluded that when you empathize with another, it has little to do with words or thought, but with the quality of energy alive in the person. If one could attune and reflect back that energy, which can normally be accessed in the abdominal region of the body, an allimportant connection is made, and true compassion can take place. Even with such widespread influence, in the end, as McCain explains, it comes back to the connection with the self. “It is all about speaking up for needs and honoring needs,” he says. “That invites us into a dialogue with people and into a conversation where both parties are open to change. When we have that, magnificence and wonder are available for all.” James Anthony Ellis is a writer, producer and filmmaker living in San Diego, California. His work in the healing field includes facilitating breathwork sessions for individuals and groups, and leading a San Diego men’s service organization. Contact him at jimellis1103@yahoo.com.

f e a t u r e iquid Blue—whom I consider modern-day troubadours—travel the globe with songs of love, peace, acceptance, and sustainability for Mother Earth. Their commitment to music and all people is inspirational and uplifting. I had the opportunity to hang out with them for an evening here in San Diego and I was truly blown away by their stage presence and their commitment to activism. The musicians of Liquid Blue have extensive experience in the music industry individually and as a group. The band is comprised of guitarist Michael Vangerov, lead vocalist Scott Stephens, drummer Angelo Frisina, and Kevin Cooper on bass. The BlueGirls trio captain is Nikki Nova, with Gypsy Gina and Diana Ferrer rounding out this group of amazing dancers and singers. Recently I had the great pleasure of speaking with Scott Stephens, a passionate musician and activist and the band’s requisite manager.
L
Vision Magazine: What led you and Liquid Blue to travel the globe so extensively? Scott Stephens: We all love to experience other cultures, and we wrote songs that became more popular internationally than here at home. We also learned to sing in other languages, most notably Mandarin, which has increased our popularity in Asia. Nikki and I learned to sing in Mandarin, after a promoter in China, who booked our shows, asked us to learn a few songs in the language. We were hesitant due to the effort involved, but once we did, it was great. We’ve sung in Mandarin every time we go to China—at least a few songs. We have visited 113 countries so far; 47 of them are in Europe, for example, including places that many people don’t visit such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe. These are fascinating places. The people were amazing and the vibe of these cultures was very authentic. It’s been our mission to learn as much as we can about other cultures. We also love to make friends and promote world peace wherever we go. VM: What would be one of the top cultural experiences you’ve had traveling with Liquid Blue? SS: In 2007 we stayed with a Palestinian family on the West Bank for a week. It was an eye-opening experience for us. We traveled throughout Palestine as well as Israel, meeting everyday people and discussing the ongoing conflict. We held a peace symposium and concert in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve, and did free peace concerts in Israel and the West Bank. We attempted to enter Gaza but we were not allowed to do so. I would rate that as the most interesting and enriching experience we’ve had and we certainly learned a lot. VM: How did the peace concerts come about in Bethlehem? SS: There is a peace group from Palestine working on both sides of the fence as well as a few activists in Israel who would like to see this conflict end. But they’re quite a bit outnumbered by those who want to keep the Palestinians oppressed. They contacted us, inspired by V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

the type of music we were writing. We ended up talking to them about coming to Israel. They set up concerts on both sides of ‘the wall’ so to speak, and we did a number of peace concerts, both in Jerusalem and in a few other cities, including Ramallah, Hebron, Jericho, and Bethlehem—on the Palestinian side. In Israel we did concerts in Jerusalem, Haifa, Nazareth, and Tel Aviv. So we spent equal time on both sides and heard both sides of the story. I think we came out with a pretty good understanding of what’s happening there and we have sympathy for the Palestinian people for what they’re going through. We even helped support the family we lived with there. In my opinion, all wars are usually started by the leaders [of their respective countries] and they’re generally benefiting the elite. In this case you’ve got Palestinian people who are not extremists. They’re not anything like what

people say; there are some militants who are extremists but this country’s been oppressed for over 60 years. So you would figure that yes, there would be a few militants. I’m surprised there’s not more. But they obviously have no military. So when you see kids throwing rocks on one side, and you’ve got other people with machine guns—a complete Air Force and Army with mandatory military service on the Israeli side—it’s not a fair fight at all. And we absolutely love the Israelis we met; we love the country. We met all kinds of people; some who were tremendously nice even if we didn’t agree with them. Our goal is that we’d like the conflict to end. We [Liquid Blue] think it’s a big hot spot in the world that creates a lot of other conflict and hatred toward the U.S. because of our policies, and we think
f e a t u r e we are on a foolish road with Israel and Palestine. There needs to be a two-state solution. VM: Why do you think that experiencing other cultures is so important for each one of us? SS: Travel expands a person’s views, and makes the world seem a lot smaller. Our [US] media devotes very little time to international news, and most of what’s covered is quite negative and skewed. So the more you travel, the more you realize that we’re all one people, on one small planet. I also feel it’s really important to travel at a young age if possible, and unfortunately most Americans do the majority of their travel during retirement age—at a time when their views and habits are well-entrenched. I believe that younger people have many more years to share what they’ve learned while being on the road and can encourage others to do the same. VM: What began Liquid Blue’s activism? SS: I think education is always the seed that will sprout activism. We make an effort to read books and learn history. Currently the whole band is reading Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. This is a book that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn the true history of our nation. Zinn focuses on the perspective of the American Indians, women, slaves, and the lower and middle classes, not just the elite. Most history is written by the victors and the conquerors. Zinn’s history is really a true look at what happened. I think anyone who has read regular history books, needs to discover this balanced view. We also get together once a month to watch a documentary film. So by reading books and watching movies, we are more educated. The more one learns the truth, the more that person is inclined to make change. That’s why education is so important. If people are ignorant; if they’re not getting educated, then they’re going to be very susceptible to what the media is saying. And of course the right-wing of our country always votes against spending for education. Other people in our country have fought for our educational system and hopefully we can improve it because it’s going downhill. VM: Tell us about your upcoming appearance this fall at the United Nations (U.N.). SS: We just completed a new song called Earth Passport, which is a tribute to both the U.N. and everyone who’s working for the U.S. Department of Peace. The song is sung in all six official United Nation languages, plus several others, and it’s a simple call for unity. The band will perform the song for the general assembly during the 2010 Millennium Development Goals Awards (MDG) ceremony. The MDG are eight international development goals that all 192 U.N. member states have agreed to achieve by the year 2015, and they include reducing poverty and child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS and developing global partnerships for development. The Earth Passport album itself is a work in progress right now. There’s another song we wrote called Dominate which is about how the U.S. has basically tried to dominate the world through foreign policy and military action. A Gypsy Girl, the Tar
by Daphne Ca
T
he young woman was hard to miss. She sat on the ground with a long burgundy skirt flowering-out around her body. Long beaded and shelled necklaces hung around her neck and her slim arms were filled from wrist to elbow with shimmery metallic bangles. A deck of tarot cards was spread out face down on a folded velvet blanket in front of her, with weighted sun and moon charms holding it down on the all sides . It was her eyes that first caught my attention—green cat eyes, outlined with black kohl (only later I realized that she wasn’t wearing any make-up). They were intense, but warm and inviting, the kind of eyes that attract you, but also make you look away because they are so deep and intimidatingly beautiful. Her skin was dark amber-colored; her complexion flawless. As I walked past her and we made eye contact, some unknown force made me stop. Could it be that she had special powers, I thought? As the desert heat slowly slipped away into a cooler shade of night, the evening’s festivities began. Snake charmers with flutes in hand set up their ornately designed wicker baskets, from where the snakes would rise up, entranced by the hypnotic sound from the instruments. Men and woman were setting up their food stands as elegantly dressed dancers scampered from one end of the plaza to another, still putting on their long, dangling earrings. Floating through the air was the scent of saffron and other exotic spices; also warm couscous, mint teas, incense and burning oils. You could see that the visitors and tourists wandering around the marketplace were almost in disbelief, spellbound by the magic there in Marrakesh, a place where time seems to stand still. I stopped in front of the young gypsy woman and sat down; I wanted to know my fortune. She welcomed me with a sensuous smile and then said something in French with an unfamiliar accent. “Sorry, I don’t speak French,” I said. She just paused, and then, as if to scan through her memory bank of languages, said, “Think of something that you are in question of.” Immediately something came to mind. I concentrated on my question for several minutes as she worked her way through the cards with a soft intensity. She never looked up once. It seemed like a mysterious force was controlling her hands and movements. For some reason I really believed she knew what she was doing. After a few repetitions and rounds of cards she looked at me with those eyes and said, “It is true. He did not want you to leave.” It felt as though my heart stopped. The gypsies are nomadic people who migrate from place to place in search of work. You’ll see them bathing in fountains in Italy, telling stories under the trees in orchards, selling their crafts along the Seine River in Paris, or reading your fortune in Morocco. Their ethnic origins can be traced back to the Sind area of India, which is today South Central Pakistan. Their ancestors made the earliest official appearance in Europe in modern-day Turkey around AD 855, after emigrating through Egypt (hence the name “gypsy”), the Middle East and Armenia. They made their way through the mainland of Europe and eventually arrived at the British Isles in the 1500s. Throughout history the gypsy life has been difficult. They have been enslaved, forbidden to speak their own language and even sterilized. As has been well-rooted in the Western mind, dark skin denotes inferiority, so by the time they reached the British Isles, they were singled out and met with discrimination. Their lifestyle aroused suspicion and they were often misunderstood and feared. In a Christian society, gypsy cultural norms such as fortune telling, palm reading V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
and the use of talking sticks were seen as “pagan rituals,” which often caused uproar. European society had become industrialized and had moved from the untamed countryside and into cities. The trend of that era was to settle down into permanent residences, and as Europeans became more “settled,” the ethnocentric belief that their lifestyle was “normal” caused them to see the gypsy culture as primitive and backwards. Their nomadic and wild existence was viewed negatively and so “poor and vagrancy laws” were put into effect—laws against hawking and being on the highways. They were also told that they couldn’t live the way they did and so housing and education acts were passed. Gypsy children did not attend school, so their parents were fined for this. The culture was singled out and prosecuted (or threatened with prosecution) for offenses such as lighting fires, having dogs without licenses or collars, damaging grass by camping, and begging. In other words, to be a gypsy meant that your whole lifestyle was essentially, “against the law.” This discrimination has been widespread, and wherever they have gone and settled, the eccentric gypsies have historically been treated in a hostile manner by their adopted countries. In Budapest, I lived near the train station on the North “Pest” side, in a poorer neighborhood, and when I would tell people where I lived, the response was usually the same; “Oh, you live near the gypsies—be careful, it’s dangerous over there!” I witnessed how badly they were marginalized, blamed for petty crimes like pickpocketing and literally spit on by passersby. But honestly, I never felt intimidated or in danger while walking home at any hour of the day or night. And yes, there was always something going on in that wild neighborhood—something musical, something loud—because music and dance is their form of communication.

arot, and My Fortune
hne Carpenter
One night after a full evening of celebrations, an accordion-playing, robust and rosy-cheeked man named Serg (who was a Roma, a Romanian gypsy, as most of them were) told me that music is “in their blood.” It’s something that’s taught and passed down to children from family members, not something they go to school to study. They simply “feel it,” because throughout the years, under the repressive circumstances that they have had to endure, music is the only thing that is true and pure It was only in 1864—a year before African-American slaves were freed—that Roma slavery was abolished in Romania. Because of their parallel histories, many see similarities between gypsy music and jazz. “Romanies [brought] an inventiveness and a radical way of thinking about making music to Europe in the same way that African-Americans, like Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, have done in America,” says Garth Cartwright, author of Princes Amongst Men: Journeys With Gypsy Musicians. As true of most traditional cultures around the world, the Romas use dance as body language, and as a form of communication. Women, men, children, and the elderly all dance ecstatically during rituals and rites of passage. Weddings are embellished with an unwavering shower of music because this is the single most important event in a gypsy’s life. The marriages are usually arranged by the parents, unless a young couple can convince them that they have found the right one (child marriage is common and has even provoked criticism). If the bride is lucky, depending on the economic ability of the family, she will be gifted a belly chain made out of pure gold coins. Once married, the bride joins her husband’s family where her role as caretaker of her husband, her in-laws and her children begins. Although it’s traditionally a patriarchical family, the wife earns respect once she starts having children. In Budapest I felt perfectly suited to them—this tribe of people—because I, V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
myself, am a gypsy—just traveling through, working temporarily, stopping to make music when I can, singing, dancing wildly, wearing bright colors to reflect the beauty of nature and seeking out my fortune. In fact, many of you may perceive yourself to be one as well. Being a gypsy is not merely a particular ethnic origin, but rather, a state of mind. The term has come to symbolize someone who embraces a nomadic, unconventional way of life, which could mean travel, or just moving around a lot and/or doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. For a gypsy, travelling is not merely a pastime or leisure activity, but a way of life. They have certain codes of behavior which prevent them from working certain jobs that would cause them to settle for too long. Therefore, they must take to a profession which allows them to be mobile. Men are inclined to sell and trade animals and livestock, and whatever items they can. A gypsy woman will inherit fortune telling and palm reading abilities, so that might naturally become her profession (something done only by women). And as a family, they tend to take seasonal work in orchards and on farms during summer and early autumn (it is not uncommon to see families with eight children, as this ensures a sufficient workforce and survival). This kind of employment is plentiful, regular, and temporary and thus perfectly suited to their nomadic
lifestyle. On Shakira’s newest album She Wolf, she sings a song called “Gypsy,” with the lyrics, “Broke my heart on the road, spent the weekend sewing the pieces back on, friends and thoughts pass me by, walking gets too boring when you learn how to fly…I’m a gypsy, are you coming with me?” This kind of sums it up. Life is about being on the road. Even though we may live in a settled location, we are constantly journeying, taking unknown paths, getting our hearts broken, remembering those who we’ve encountered along the way. And on this journey, we realize that we can actually fly. The belly-dancing singer, Shakira says that she relates strongly to her new single. “It’s how I live my life; like a nomad,” she said. “Ever since I became famous, I’m constantly traveling, which is great as I get to see so many different cultures and traditions. I definitely live like a gypsy!” Embracing gypsy culture means to embrace our eccentricities—to be loud and to possess an unfaltering zest for life. We’ll stop at nothing to get to our next location because it is wanderlust, and our strong sense of survival that inspires us and keeps us traveling the road of life. We get knocked down, we get back up, we’re told no, but we keep going. We gypsies are always finding new routes, learning new dances and staying connected to the forests of our imaginations. Are you coming with me? Daphne can be found either sitting in a tree, laughing hysterically, dancing wildly in a drum circle, wandering through gritty and beautiful urban areas at night or sitting at her computer writing this. On the Red Planetary Full Moon of May 27, 2010, a torrent of remarkably powerful forces will be unleashed upon the Earth. A cosmic pulse of perfection, production and full manifestation for all you could hope for and desire will be unleashed! The May full moon corresponds to “Tone 10 of the Planetary Pulse.” It represents the principle allowing manifestation to occur for those who are fluent in the powers of the mind and can focus their thoughts and energy, based on the coherence of the preceding 9 numbers. On this Red Moon divine essence and the physical meet as one. The heavens touch the Earth as spirit and matter unite. The actualization of creative potential is at the heart of our nature, bringing depth, richness and importance to our lives. At this time, those with the “Eyes to see and ears to hear” will directly experience the magic, mystery, and wonder that the entire manifest world is the green lantern heart light of our will and imagination brought to life. This planetary vibration cues us to now consider what we are producing in our lives, and by what means. How are we manifesting our dreams? Are we incarnating our ideals? All that we bring to this world—our thoughts, words and deeds—become solid matter and contribute to the vast planetary equation. This planetary frequency directs: without judgment there is only perfection. To achieve maximum productivity: strive wholeheartedly to perfect all that you endeavor, yet also accept that there is an already existing, inherent perfection in all that is manifest, as it is, simply because it is manifest. The symbol for the Red Moon appears as a brilliant beacon; a portal inviting us into the self-remembrance of who we are in our limitless, uncontainable steadfast purity. The Harmonic Cosmo-Genesis of May 27 begins the cosmic countdown to the year 2012 that brings an ending and a new beginning to social, political, economic, and geological cycles for America and the world. The living prophecy that we are now voyaging through has had many names ascribed to it, as it has been foretold by countless cultures and religions, and is now being verified by modern science that great changes are upon us. Please join some of the world’s greatest spiritual teachers as they describe their visions of what is to come, and how we are the future, and the heroes, and how our coming has been prophesied for thousands of years and that we are who we have been waiting for! Carl Johan Calleman, Dannion Brinkley, Sean David Morton, Susan Shumsky, and many other spiritual teachers and prophets at the Harmonic Cosmo-Genesis Conference in Mount Shasta California: www.harmonicconvergence2010.com, divinetravels@aol.com, 503.471.1608.

Run or Walk for Nepalese Youth in the Marin Human Race this May by Cindy Chen
O
n May 8, prepare for a fun, family-friendly 5K run/walk to benefit the Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation (NYOF). As part of the Marin Human Race event, which sponsors various nonprofit organizations, this event is based in San Rafael, California at the Marin Civic Center. Included are fair booths from 100 different local organizations. If you’ve never done a race before, or even if you’re a seasoned marathon runner, this will be a perfect summer activity with family and friends, and it will benefit a great cause. It is also the organization’s first participation in the Marin races. It all began in 1984, with founder Olga Murray’s trekking trip to Nepal. A lawyer at the California Supreme Court, Murray fell in love with Nepal and its children: “When I first went to Nepal...I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the landscape and the exotic surroundings, but most of all by the children I encountered there. They were poor beyond anything I had experienced before, dressed in rags, very dirty, poorly nourished and mostly unschooled, but with an amazing capacity for joy. I thought to myself that for the price of a good haircut back in the States, I could make a significant difference in their lives. I returned home determined, somehow, to find a way to help,” she says. Today, NYOF serves through loving and caring programs that help to make lasting changes in the lives of Nepalese youth. J and K House are homes for orphaned, abandoned, or disabled children, and the Indentured Daughters Program rescues girls from indentured servitude. Schools and vocational education are important aspects of the work that NYOF does, as education is seen as the key to alleviating poverty. Not restricted to youth, the organization also reaches out in “random acts of kindness” to anyone who needs help in Nepal. Since its inception, Murray has reached out to children in Nepal and encouraged them to study for and pass the college entrance exams, after which she offered scholarships for them to pursue their educations. The scholarship program continues to this day. The spirit of education and social responsibility sees a continuance even with those who have been supported—the children and former children of NYOF participate in giving back to their elderly, helping in disaster relief, and some of the graduates also provide social services, from dentistry to medicine. It is in these results that it becomes more apparent how much one person or one act of support and kindness can do, and how far-reaching those effects can be. To take part in the race, please contact info@nyof.org, call their number below, or register online at www. marinhumanrace.org and look for NYOF. Fees are $25 to join a team or register as an individual. You can also join an existing team or sponsor someone. Contact information for the U.S. Nepal office is as follows: Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation, 3030 Bridgeway, Suite 123, Sausalito, CA 94965. 1.866.FOR.NYOF Fax: 415.331.4027. Happy running! odern life has pushed many of us into a more focused concern for ourselves with the illusion that we are connecting with others. What is nonduality? How does the “I” arise? Who is the doer? If everything is truly nothing, why do we perceive so much complexity? If everything is unfolding as it should, can we have free will? Is nondual awareness the end point for the evolution of consciousness? Take 21 of the finest thinkers in the fields of neuroscience, quantum physics, psychotherapy, art, Vedanta, Sufism, Judaism, and Buddhism and ask them some of the toughest questions known to humankind and this is what you get: A groundbreaking anthology of interviews that illuminate the deepest and most compelling mysteries of the human experience. This DVD is the first of its kind to explore the convergence between science and nonduality. Rather than being heavily edited to direct the viewer according to a particular opinion, each of the interviews is unique and illuminating. Sometimes they allow the opportunity for innumerable questions about our own experience. The DVD set contains interviews with: Stuart Hameroff, Stephen Wolinksy, Peter Fenner Loibon Le Baaba, Rupert Spira, Jeremy Hayward, Rabbi Hoffman, Amit Goswami, Francis Lucille, Robert Dittler, Henry Stapp, Nahid Angha, Jeff Foster, Kabir Helminski, Peter Russell, John Prendergast, Bernie Baars, Olga Louchakova, Vijai Kapoor, Thomas Ray and Tim Freke Each interview is a unique journey that ultimately brings us back to the source of all—beyond concepts and words. Autobiography of a Yogi I
r e v i e w s
remember where I was when I first read Autobiography of a Yogi. I was in a café in Calangute, Goa (India). Drinking a mango lassi I wandered over to a bookshelf where you could exchange one of your books for another. I passed on Crime and Punishment [by Fyodor Dostoevsky] for Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. I went down to the beach and read about the early life of Yogananda, amazed by his exotic life. I read this book as a cow wandered by and I realized that there was so much India could teach me. Wikipedia offers this description of Yogananda: “In 1920, he went to the United States aboard the ship City of Sparta, as India’s delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals convening in Boston. That same year he founded the Self-Realization Fellowship to disseminate, worldwide, his teachings on India’s ancient practices and philosophy of Yoga and its tradition of meditation. For the next several years, he lectured and taught on the East Coast and in 1924 embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Thousands came to his lectures. The following year, he established, in Los Angeles, California, an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, which became the spiritual and administrative heart of his growing work. Yogananda was the first Hindu teacher of yoga to make his permanent home in America, living there from 1920-1952, with the exception of his trip abroad in 1935-1936.” At that time in Goa I had only vaguely heard of Yogananda. I am now completely in awe of what this man has achieved. His life is a testament to the greatness one can bestow upon oneself and others through the power of love. With the release of the anniversary edition of Autobiography of a Yogi (now in paperback) there is the added bonus of a CD called Voice which features eight excerpts from his popular lecture series. Yogananda’s words were a balm upon my heart and mind this morning as I listened to the CD. They reminded me once again that happiness is a choice and a state of mind which can be achieved when one has harmonized the body, mind, and spirit. Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda’s bestselling autobiography was first published in 1946 to widespread acclaim. It continues to be a staple for those seeking an introduction to the mind of India and a modern day saint. When I walk through the SRF grounds in Encinitas, I am reminded about the power of the mind and the soul to achieve true peace and joy on earth. In this book Yogananda describes his youthful search for an enlightened teacher in turn-of-the-century India and then his 10 years in training at the hermitage of the revered spiritual master Sri Yukteswar Giri, as well as the 30 years he lived and taught in America. Yogananda was devoted to his search for spiritual truth and the teachings of Kriya Yoga. He writes candidly about all aspects of his life, including the highlights, such as meeting Mahatma Gandhi and the Nobel Laureate Rabindranth Tagore. Yogananda’s words are truly a gift to the world. Zola LIGHT Açaí & the Zola Açaí The Daily Wellness Shot
M
eeting Chris Cuvelier, President and Founder of Zola® and learning of his philanthropy in Brazil as well as his symbiotic relationship with the growers of the raw elements of his products, I am reminded that when you do what you love, you often do good for others. “We’re committed to social responsibility. Project Zola was created to empower and improve quality of life by creating shelter and a sustainable revenue stream for the indigenous people of the Amazon. Zola sustainably harvests its Açaí berries, which ultimately helps protect the trees of the Amazon,” Cuvelier says. Zola has always offered quality Açaí products and they have just introduced a new Zola LIGHT Açaí product that I particularly like. Zola LIGHT Açaí has a high ORAC [Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity value] and less sugar. Also, the Zola Açaí Daily Wellness Shot is a great way to boost vitality with a one-ounce ‘shot’ of their unique blend of Açaí and Acerola. Unlike other Açaí-based dietary supplements that can contain up to 19 different fruits and an unknown level of ORAC, the Zola Açaí Daily Wellness Shot contains over 85 percent Açaí and Acerola while delivering 3,000 ORAC per ounce. With only 20 calories and 3 grams of sugar, a one-ounce shot includes 100 percent of an adult’s recommended daily dose of antioxidants for immune system support, heart health, anti-aging properties and a boost in energy and stamina. Zola® was the very first to bottle Açaí juice, and is the fastest growing brand of Açaí juice on the market. Cuvelier adds, “We’re constantly exploring ways to bring the health benefits of these super-fruits to more people, and both the Zola LIGHT Açaí and the Açaí Daily Wellness Shot expand our reach to consumers who are fans of super-fruits and want the value-added benefit of low-sugar or a concentrated burst of antioxidants.” As a person who does not like to take pills, I love the convenience and health benefits of Zola products. Visit www.drinkzola.com or www.zolaacai.com for more information.—SLM

Advanced Foot Reflexology
Geriatric massage, as well as cancer massage and other hospital-based massage are areas seeing greater integration with traditional Western medicine. For those interested in the field of geriatric massage, there are some fundamental adjustments to the typical Swedish massage protocol. The class taught at Healing Hands teaches about working with the elderly population, and covers physiology and issues relating to aging, joints, connective tissue and other topics. A major portion of the class is completed by working directly with clients at a skilled nursing facility. Students have the opportunity to work with the same 3 or 4 clients over a period of time to better learn and adapt to those clients’ individual needs. This type of massage is very much about learning how to manage in a hospitalbased environment, usually without the luxury of massage tables. Just as there are no “standard” 80-year-olds, each treatment must adapt and be flexible to the individual and the aging process, as opposed to age-based treatment. One benefit for the elderly is simply the presence of another caring human being. It is difficult to quantify the effects and importance of this very basic aspect of human existence: the capacity and necessity for touch and presence. Holding space for the client can help with their feelings of loneliness, depression and disorientation, and can offer an overall calming effect. There is growing research about massage, with studies showing clinical and empirical evidence of the benefits of touch—but ultimately, touch is something that is felt and experienced. How do you put into charts or data the abstract emotional effects experienced after massage, or the increased energy or even mental clarity that you experience after a session? Massage is often about the communication between bodies, emotions, and the greater environment. One of the greatest benefits of massage lies in a deeper understanding of our bodies; it is about so much more than just a therapist putting her hands on a client—it always involves intention and listening to what that body is saying. Healing Hands School of Holistic Health can be contacted at: 800.355.6463. They are located at: 125 West Mission, Suite 212, Escondido, CA 92025. More information about classes and schedules can be obtained through their website: http:// www.healinghandsschool.com. For general information about massage and massage research, and for where to find a massage therapist, see the American Massage Therapy Association’s website at www.amtamassage.org.

beyond skin into the material and non-material realms. According to V. M. Bronnikov, the Bronnikov Method is the REM state in a waking state, so that the dream world merges with the waking world. Can you imagine the possibilities of the global human and the effects of his or her aspirations, empowered through the unification of the material and nonmaterial realms? If Dr. Ross is able to scientifically prove that the “evil eye” exists and that one can actually “feel” someone looking at them, then imagine what else can be accomplished when one consciously extends his energy beyond self with focused attention. This is the direction and task of the Bronnikov Method as we move forward into the next stage of globalization. In the movie The Matrix, Neo sees a child bending a spoon. The child gives the spoon to Neo and says, “Do not try to bend the spoon, that’s impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.” For myself, the truth is that the physical body is not a container for our energy; it is a catalyst for conscious globalization. Hendrix Castro is a certified trainer of the Bronnikov Method with NeuroVision Academy and host of the radio talk show, Conscious Awakenings, on Contact Talk Radio: www.contacttalkradio.com/hosts/hendrix.html. Spiritual
the other. He objectifies illness, distances himself from his own weakness, elevates himself and degrades the patient.” The solution to this split archetype is to face yourself, acknowledge your arrogance, and make a genuine effort to do something about it. Notice your defensiveness when people give you hints about it. Face your anxieties, your attitude toward your work, and your fears. When I first began practicing psychotherapy, I realized that I wasn’t fully prepared for the work. I didn’t know some things I should know because I hadn’t faced them in my own life. My first years in this work were effective—I had a good education and good training—but they were difficult because of the personal work on my own soul I knew I had yet to do. I went into therapy myself, I kept a full and intense diary of my inner conflicts and my dreams, and I consulted with many professional and nonprofessional friends. I reached a point where I finally felt more secure in myself as a healer. I saw some good work that I had done, but because of my self-confrontations I didn’t gloat over it. This experience of mine leads me to think that self-confrontation is an important step in becoming a healer. Like the aspiring Plains healer who didn’t become a shaman because of his fear of rattlesnakes, many physicians fail to evoke the healer in their work because of their fears, and they won’t deal with those fears until they face up to them. The psychology of service could be one of those human issues that find their way into the soulful education of a health-care worker. It isn’t enough to encourage, inspire, or cajole a person to show some etiquette with patients. Each worker has to deal with emotional issues that any of us might have and may interfere with good community relationships. The soul exists in the rich, sometimes tense space between people, and how you handle that space can make all the difference in creating a healing environment. Care of the Soul in Medicine: Healing Guidance for Patients, Families, and the People Who Care for Them is published by Hay House and is available at all bookstores or online at: www.hayhouse.com. and day-to-day life. Although the Goddesses I see daily look like royalty, these are not the same depictions all Hindus choose. Temples in Indian villages showcase Goddesses dressed as villagers with plain saris and minimal ornamentation. Still other temples house the Goddess in the form of the Earth Mother—broad hips, round belly, and voluptuous breasts. Worshippers flock to the icon that radiates divinity to them. Most adults are visual learners and psychologists verify that the human subconscious works in pictures. Therefore, even where religions do not provide a direct image of “God,” symbols are offered to help people feel the presence of the divine. Sometimes, however, even these symbols are too abstract and do not suffice. People yearn for a higher power that they can identify with and one that is personal. What is more personal than an image in our own likeness? Love is of the essence on any spiritual path. The closer we feel to Divinity, the more love we feel and vice versa. When “God” is too distant and too different from ourselves, we feel disconnected and alone. Many in turn disengage from spiritual practices and struggle to know love. Instead, why not do as the Hindus and represent our concept of the Universal Truth with icons we relate to? Why not find an image that speaks to us so that we too can feel the brilliance of the Ultimate Source Power? Why not make “God” personal? What would your “God” look like? “Modern Troubadours” continued from page 24
opinion that each one of us could do to change the world, what would it be? SS: Be educated and be active. To work properly, Democracy needs everyone involved. You have to be motivated. Certainly I think if a person’s not educated on issues, it’s difficult to be motivated and it’s difficult to work effectively as an activist. So the starting point is that we need to educate ourselves, our friends and everyone around us and to encourage education. VM: How do you think all of this travel has changed you personally? SS: I think a lot of us fortunately started out with a pretty open, expanded view of the world and the universe as one. I started with those philosophies in my mind, but as I traveled around the world and experienced different religions and different cultures first-hand—as opposed to only in books, it [these cultures] really came alive. It’s beautiful if somebody can start out that way, but not everybody does, so if people travel even if they have very rigid views when they do so, I think those views become expanded. We’re taught to believe that this (the U.S.) is really the only great country in the world. Somehow we’re taught to believe that we’re a Christian nation and there’s only one religion and we are taught that America is the only great nation, and the rest of them [nation states] are all supported by us. And when you travel around you find out that obviously it’s very different. The world is full of great people. People are all the same everywhere you go. VM: What was the impetus for your green activism; was there one thing that prompted you to go green in all areas of your life? SS: I grew up in Los Angeles, and when I was real young, playing on the playground I would get what I’d call “smog lung” after just being outside for a couple of hours. I could hardly breathe, and I had asthma. My dad and I were living in the suburbs, and he would drive to downtown L.A. every day. As I approached my teen years, his drive went from about 35 minutes to an hour and a half. That brought him home very stressed out, and I just thought, “There’s got to be a better way.” If you removed the smog and the traffic, L.A. is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. That’s why people settled on the west coast, because of the rolling hills and of course the amazing Pacific Ocean. It is gorgeous there and we’ve ruined it. I’m especially big about air pollution because it goes everywhere. It seems like these factories that harm the environment are always in poor neighborhoods. Also: the combustion engine really should be gone. We have the technology now, and I think in the next few years you’re going to see electric cars everywhere. That’s probably what I’m the most optimistic about as far as everything going green. We could have cleaner air not only in the US, but also throughout the world. We’ve been in some cities in China where they never see the sun. When we first arrived, we thought it was just cloudy, and after a couple of weeks you see that the sky never changes, so we began asking people about it. Everybody said “No, we never see the sun.” And even when it rains, unless it rains as a downpour, they don’t even get a glimpse of the sky; afterwards the smog comes back that quickly. Children live in these cities and never see the sun. Yet I had never heard about this city. I don’t understand why. It shocked me that if you don’t travel you could have spent the better part of your life and not known about these people who are barely subsisting, and never see the sun. VM: That’s incredibly sad. When you hear the words “global soul,” what comes to your mind? SS: Oneness, collective consciousness, karma. I think of the great spiritual traditions of higher thinking. I’ve read at least all of the major scriptures from most of the world’s religions, and I believe that all of these reflect a global soul: Hinduism, specifically through yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, Native American traditions and Christian mystics. If I handed you certain scriptures from the yogis—the yoga sutras—or the Upanishads, or I could switch it, and hand you a Buddhist scripture or scripture from Sufism, you might not know the difference because they really speak of the same things. They’re not pushing people away V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
from each other and trying to say that there is only one path to God. These are the traditions that bring people together and they’re traditions that oppose war and actually believe in peace, which I believe is what Jesus really taught; but his teachings have become very skewed. VM: Will there be peace on Earth? SS: There really never has been for any length of time. Right now it doesn’t seem likely in our lifetime, but I’m a pacifist, an idealist, and a believer in the possibilities of a Utopian society. So I remain hopeful that it will happen at some point, and if it doesn’t happen in this lifetime, hopefully it happens in the next. It’s likely that somewhere in this enormous universe there are examples of Utopian societies; people who have figured it out and are living for the benefit of all, not just the rich; people who have stopped going to war, and believe in dialogue rather than bombs. It’s pretty simple stuff, as far as peace on Earth goes. I think that every child who is born, until they start seeing violence, just would naturally [be oriented toward peace]. I think it’s got to be shocking to children when they start to realize what this world is really like, because I think we all come in [to this life] very innocent and then we become corrupted. There is no reason that we have to kill each other to sustain ourselves and continue warring like we do. I totally believe that we could achieve peace here on earth through education, activism, understanding, and meditation, as well as just accepting one another. We all try [in Liquid Blue] to do our small part as we deal with social or spiritual issues. We try to make a difference one song at a time. “My art is instinctual and at times reflects a pure stream of consciousness. For me, art and design are not only about oneself but about connecting to those around you on a deeper and more meaningful level. It’s the ultimate connector between humanity and our individual lives. To me, art is life.” As a photographer and native and creative Californian, Danielle currently resides in San Diego while working on her degree in graphic design at San Diego State. She sees design as a visual and universal language. She often shares her lens with the art of music as she can appreciate its expression and energy. “I love to capture the complexity and ambiance of music. I want to see those artists through my lens and feel the connection they have to their craft. It’s the rawest form of being.” Danielle currently practices other forms of expression including dance. She performs regularly with a local dance team whom she sees as her second family. “We share a passion for movement and the interpretation of music. As far as my exploration with art, I’m excited to continue to learn, experience, and grow and I am hoping to gain limitless amounts of inspiration through my peers as well as offer a little of my own...” Check out more of Danielle’s work at myspace.com/dg_photograph or contact her at danigood23@gmail.com
