Ocean Ther apy by Jason Weber
H
ave you ever imagined what it would be like to walk on water? I always wondered that as I watched the surfers stream across the faces of the waves in Manhattan Beach when I was a young boy. I always imagined how amazing and graceful that would feel. Then one day, after a lot of falling and humiliation, my determination and strong will won and enabled me to experience that first magical liquid ride down the glimmering face of a chest/shoulder high peeler. The pure adrenaline I felt that day inspired my being. Since then, the ocean’s beautiful spirit of strength and invincibility, coupled with its vastness and peace, has never ceased to astound and intrigue me. My soul was smiling that wonderful day, and from then on I felt the sacred sea within me. I have lived abroad and surfed a variety of waves all over the world. I have had several “close calls” and even near-death experiences while surfing big waves in unfamiliar places. A combination of courage and determination, passion for surfing, and my own therapy methods enabled me to overcome the fear of those experiences and continue to enjoy the surf. I was told recently by a friend that “FEAR” stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. So true! I believe much of the time it is simply the negative associations that we attach to situations and our “story” about something that isn’t true that holds us back. Fear, therefore, is mostly an illusion created in our minds. I believe now more than ever that it is time to stand up and take responsibility for our fears and start to see things differently as more transition and adversity affect our planet and we who inhabit Her. Many people have expressed their fear of the ocean, especially after several tsunamis have devastated coastal cities in different countries across the globe. Some have had very traumatic experiences in the water or ocean at some point. My intention and mission is to assist people in overcoming this fear through surf lessons, paddling, swimming, or simply wading so that they can feel empowered not only in the ocean, but in all areas of their lives. I simply use the ocean as a catalyst for this. I have had the wonderful opportunity to witness people I work with transform their fear into a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. They are then inspired to use the tools I give them in other areas of their life where they may feel stuck or afraid. I met with one of my clients, Joe, for the first time recently. He had expressed to me that he was going through a difficult time, feeling uneasy and disempowered in a few areas in his life. He also had the fear that he was simply not good enough. After he had used some of my therapy methods that incorporate positive affirmations and anchoring feelings of empowerment and joy in his body, he started to feel better. Then when negative thoughts or feelings came up for him in the future, he would simply use

those moments as a perfect time to choose differently and remember how to access his own feelings of empowerment and joy. I witnessed Joe in his own inner alchemy, the heavy lead (fear, lack, withdrawal, hopelessness) being transmuted into his own precious gold (confidence, empowerment, joy, love). He then was able to forgive and accept himself more for where he was at, and enjoyed himself tremendously with me in the water. His enjoyment enabled him to progress quicker in the surf and be “in the flow” with the water and waves. He also learned how to be with his own process and flow without judgment. From then on, Joe realized he could do and achieve whatever he put his heart and mind to, and that his fear was only an illusion that held him back. Using this new knowledge, Joe began to embody the true, deeper meaning of what it means to be empowered and whole. Joe says, “After three classes with Jason, I was shown ways to find inner strength and use that power to replace negative with positive thoughts or actions. With these tools, I was able to focus better on my lesson, as well as many other aspects in my life. The surfing was awesome, and to be able to apply the effects of the therapy in the water was amazing. I felt more free and capable. It’s like a part of me got out of the way so another part of me could shine through. I then realized it was not only about surfing waves in the ocean, but also about surfing the inner waves of thoughts and emotions in myself.” Surfing waves for me are just like surfing life. Each wave is an expression and creativity in action—a beautiful, divine weaving of human and sea in spontaneous expression together, a perfect balance of doing and being, of going and coming, of flesh and Spirit. I know that how I choose to ride those waves are symbolic of how I choose to engage and act in life. I keep this thought close to my heart every time I enter the sea. This is the inspiration and connection I carry with me every new time I enter the water to share the gifts of Mother Ocean with others. In turn, I express my humble gratitude to Mother Ocean and to my guests for enabling me to witness and facilitate deep healing and transformation and contribute to their feelings of peace and well-being. We are made up of well over 50 percent water; it is part of our being, so let us be one with it in body, mind, soul, and heart! We are all Soul Riders in one way or another, my friends! The Soul Rider lives and rides on energetically—whether in huge vortexes or tiny ripples—all in the love and harmony of cosmic communion. Let us all choose to ride the waves of life through eternity while sharing our deepest presence and gifts in every moment. How will you choose to be today? n the field of mental health, most specifically relating to treatment of anxiety disorders, there is a concept relating to tolerance for uncertainty. People with high anxiety have a low tolerance for uncertainty, whereas people with low anxiety have a high tolerance for uncertainty. An extreme example is someone who suffers with agoraphobia, an anxiety-based panic disorder whereby they may remain “shut-ins,” refusing to leave their homes. They do not want to leave their homes because of the uncertainty that something bad, no matter how slight the chance, might happen to them should they venture outside. A recovering agoraphobic once described it in this way: He feared that if he went outside, a pterodactyl might swoop down and grab him. After treatment, he learned to smile at this. But this was a good analogy to describe his low tolerance for uncertainty. His fear overtook reason. In his mind, there was at least some chance, no matter how infinitesimal, that there was one such flying dinosaur left, secretly hiding out, surviving all these years, and it was going to get him if he walked outside. So he didn’t leave his home. To a lesser degree, other anxiety issues will cause the fear of uncertainty to manifest itself in some fashion. Those suffering with Obsessive-Compulsive issues may repeatedly wash their hands in order to avoid the slightest chance of contracting some type of germ. Those with General or Social Anxiety Disorders may engage in what’s called catastrophic thinking and avoid certain situations and activities as, again, there is a chance something will go wrong. Fears of flying or public speaking are common examples. The generally accepted treatment for such issues is called exposure therapy. It is basically a carefully planned and incremental form of the old adage that you have to face your fears—that you have to build your tolerance and learn to embrace uncertainty. This concept of embracing uncertainty has connotations for all of us, and there is a spiritual angle as well. How many of us have experienced (or knew someone) staying in a bad job or an unhealthy relationship because the uncertainty of leaving those situations created more anxiety than the certainty of staying in those
unhappy situations? How many people do not end up following their true life’s path because it is impractical, because there is a large degree of perceived uncertainty associated with following that path? The fear speaks out: “Watch out! If you do follow that dream, a pterodactyl might just swoop down and gobble you up!” In the spiritual realm, there is the not-so-secret concept, put forth in one form or another by many teachers, that the universe or a higher power will conspire to give you what you want or need, if you allow it to do so. So how do we allow the universe to unfold to grant our heart’s desires and help us manifest our true selves without embracing uncertainty? In order to let the universe unfold for us, we have to hand over the controls to this greater force. It takes courage, faith, and trust that we will in fact be taken care of, that we won’t be harmed and we will end up right where we are supposed to be, even if that is different from our original intent. We then discover that when we trust, let go, and embrace the uncertainty, the mental chatter in our own minds which expressed the fear of uncertainty, subsides. The quietness created then allows the unfolding universe to interact with our own intuition. We get clearer direction from within our own hearts. We become steadfast on a new path which may be riddled with uncertainty and perceived as impractical by others. Ironically, we feel more certain about our direction. We aren’t practicing embracing uncertainty in a careless manner, however. We don’t jump out into a busy street, thinking, “Oh the universe will take care of me.” We use discernment. We set intentions and we take careful, mindful steps in the context of proceeding onto a new path. With fearful mental chatter gone, this skill is enhanced. We also practice non-attachment. We can’t embrace a new uncertain future when we are fully attached to our old lives. We also do not attach ourselves to specific outcomes after we have set our intentions. That attachment will also just create mental chatter trying to control the situation, blocking you from aligning with how the universe is unfolding. continued on page 39

Can’t Sleep? HOLISTIC LIVING
New Daytime Tools to Beat Insomnia by Dr. Joni Labbe
Y
ou know the routine. You’re exhausted and looking forward to collapsing in bed, but as soon as your head hits the pillow, newfound energy courses through your veins and your mind won’t stop churning. Or perhaps you fall asleep quickly but then bolt awake around 3 a.m., your mind alert and perhaps even anxious. Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep has become a fact of life for more than 60 percent of Americans, fueling a $2 billion sleep medication industry. To maintain work productivity, many people use stimulants to fuel themselves through the day, and sleep medications to sleep at night. These measures only compound the problem causing sleep problems. Sleep deprivation not only increases your risk of numerous health disorders (Alzheimer’s, obesity, and heart disease, to name a few), but it also speeds aging and sets you up for depression. Unfortunately, prescription sleeping pills are not a good long-term answer, as they also come with troubling side effects and a four times higher risk of death. So what are your options? To address the factors robbing you of sleep, you need to be aware of some factors that cause it. The following are a few common causes and ways to address them.
Blood Sugar Issues Disturb Sleep Clinically, we see that the majority of sleep issues stem from blood sugar issues due to diet. Americans eat vastly more sweet and starchy foods than the human body was designed to handle Starchy diets can cause either insulin resistance (high blood sugar) or reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), both of which cause sleep disorders. People with insulin resistance usually have high levels of adrenal stress hormones as well. They typically have trouble falling asleep at night, or wake up feeling tired, as if they hadn’t slept at all. People with low blood sugar, on the other hand, are the ones who typically bolt awake at 3 a.m. This is because their blood sugar drops too low during the night, triggering stress hormones to raise blood sugar. Unfortunately, stress hormones also raise stress, which is why those 3 a.m. wake-up calls can be filled with anxiety. Eating a little bit of protein may help you fall back asleep. In both of these scenarios, a lower carbohydrate diet can significantly improve sleep. You should strive for less than 150 grams a day. Imbalanced Brain Chemicals Our brain uses chemicals called neurotransmitters to communicate. The neurotransmitter serotonin is an important precursor to the sleep hormone, melatonin. Sometimes poor sleep can be a result of a serotonin deficiency, estimated to affect more than 90 percent of Americans to some degree. Serotonin is also our “joy and well-being” neurotransmitter, so it’s no wonder many people with sleep issues also suffer from depression. Boosting serotonin production with the amino acid L-tryptophan has proven effective for many people. I also continued on page 39

hen I was a kid, the circus came to an adjoining town. It set up camp at the Hammond Civic Center, a cavernous building that housed all manner of events designed to ensnare a young boy’s fancy: rock concerts with stacks of Marshall amplifiers, and the Valhalla of public attractions—professional wrestling. Unfortunately, those events weren’t free, and the little discretionary income we had was earmarked for our annual vacation to what was known as the Greek Riviera. Unlike its French counterpart, our holiday retreat was nothing more than a cluster of ramshackle cottages so dilapidated that even mosquitoes stayed out for fear of their imminent collapse. Its saving grace was that it was just a scenic stroll through the woods from the life-affirming shore of Lake Michigan; there, the visual clang of water so blue pounding against sand so white was mediated by the sonic swirl of the tall grass that sang as it swayed in the wind that whipped off the water. With money being tight, we were relegated to events that cost nothing. This meant attending a stream of concerts by singers and musicians whose own families had probably forgotten that they ever played or sang. It also meant going to lectures given by people who’d traveled somewhere, documented every aspect of their trip by raising a cheap camera with a shaky hand, only to return home where they could give a free chat at the local library or church hall. Inevitably, these people shared one fatal trait: they stuttered. Which, in a way, was eerily consistent with the zeitgeist—out-of-focus pictures taken by a tremulous hand should have a stammering narrator if only to illuminate comedy’s darker corners. And when we had exhausted live entertainment as a source of constructive distraction, we went high-tech. “High-tech,’’ circa the mid-60s, meant a reel-toreel movie projector, a bare dining room wall, and whatever film the local library had available. To this day I can’t hear the word ‘nocturnal’ without reflexively mouthing the words “Night Birds of the Serengeti,” the title of the film that weaned us from watching movies at home as a panacea for our boredom. From my perspective, the best cure for our ennui was the county fair. It was circus-lite. And though it didn’t have the exotic heft the circus wielded, did I mention it was free? One year I went multiple times. I hitched rides with various friends’ families after negotiating consecutive advances on my allowance, transactions that were harder to complete than qualifying for a loan from the World Bank, or so it felt.
GREEK TO ME The great thing about going multiple times within a week was that I got to know all the booth-keepers and operators. The guys that ran the Ring Toss? They recognized me by my face—oh, and by how close I had come to snagging the post that had a cigarette lighter, a gold watch, and a $10 bill, all as one prize. It was just waiting for my Hail Mary ring to lasso its lucre. Amazingly, that didn’t happen. There was an odd-looking couple that managed the milk bottle target range; coincidentally, they themselves were bottle-shaped with pallid skin the color of old milk. We became so close that they even counseled me on which cluster to aim for, an amenity I didn’t see them extend to anyone else. But the ultimate perk of regular attendance was meeting the keeper of the Shetland ponies. Clearly, he had an eye for talent. In me he saw unlimited potential. In me he saw someone who was kind, gentle, and entrepreneurial. In me he saw a leader—of Shetland ponies. So he offered me a job. I would clear it with my parents by posing it as the ultimate example of workstudy. I’d work while studying the various cuisines the fair offered, contrasting and comparing the crunchy delight of glazed popcorn balls with the deep-fried decadence of a corn dog drowning in mustard so yellow it looked like liquid sunlight. And the best part of it was that it wouldn’t interfere with my other, less significant, life. You know, the one where I slept in my bed, woke up, ate breakfast, went to school, came home, did my chores, ate dinner, did my homework, watched TV, and then went to bed—that life. No, this experience would take the straw of my life and burn it for fuel for my budding career as a mini-equine Field Associate. Once I’d convinced my Dad that one supported the other, I’d be off and running. And as soon as school would let out for the summer, I’d join the fair full-time. I’d be smart as a whip, and willing as the wind to go wherever the ponies went, doing what had to be done. There’d be no pile of dung too pungent for my shovel, no aged bale of hay too loose for me to gather. And for all my efforts, I’d get to tour the great state of Indiana, seeing its crown heads firsthand. Towns with sensuous tags like French Lick. Or bergs with burly names like Gnaw Bone. And whilst touring those places continued on page 39

LIFE QUAKE ™

Dr. Toni Galardi
y March column dealt with the meaning of dreams, and it elicited a huge response from readers, so I’ve decided to dedicate another column to dreams and their interpretations. When you write to have a dream interpreted, please give me essential details about your waking life, such as what you do for a living, your life circumstances, any challenges you are facing, etc., in order for me to fully grasp what your unconscious may be trying to tell you. Dear Dr. Toni: I really enjoy reading your column and especially loved the March issue where you interpreted the dream of one of your readers. I’ve never written to an advice columnist before, but thought I would give it a shot. I have had this recurrent dream since I was a kid of being in a classroom with no clothes on. In the dream I am embarrassed and cannot believe that I forgot to put clothes on. I also am aware of the fact that I have forgotten to study for an exam we are about to have. I am a 42-year-old married woman who started a new management position at the company I have worked at for four years. I like my job, but I am working long hours now. What do you think the dream means? Confused in Los Angeles Dear Reader: When we have a repetitive dream, it is very significant. The unconscious part of your mind is trying to work out a particular psychological dilemma or complex that is unresolved. When we interpret dreams, we first look at the emotional tone of each scene of the dream. For example, if you had been comfortable with no clothes on in the dream, it might mean that you are comfortable being in a learning environment without a familiar persona. (Clothes represent our image.) In this case, perhaps you often feel vulnerable and unprepared when you are in a new learning situation. Your new job may be triggering childhood fears of failing or not fitting in. You are putting in long hours and there may be fears of not having enough hours in the day to feel competent and comfortable with completing all of your new responsibilities. Before going to sleep at night, I would suggest an exercise I give in my book, “The
LifeQuake Phenomenon,” called Evening Download. Before going to bed, spend 15 minutes sitting in a chair in a quiet room. Scan back through the day in your mind and note what you were feeling when you woke up, when you had your breakfast, got dressed, drove to work, and then each hour of the day. As you replay the feeling of each part of the day, notice where you felt it in your body. Now, breathe into that body part and let the feeling release through exhaling right into the feeling. Do this with every memory of the day until you feel emptied out of stressful emotions. Once you are relaxed, ask yourself, what do I need to know about today? What did I learn today? What is my intention for tomorrow? Then get into bed and let your consciousness feel the peace of this awareness as you drift off to sleep. Sweet dreams! Dear Dr. Toni: I am a writer. I have been attempting to get a script sold by my agent to a suitable movie studio in Hollywood for two years. I really don’t like Los Angeles and would not be here if it weren’t for my dream of getting this movie made. I am 37. I went to an Ivy League school in the East and my friends and family think I should get my head examined for staying here. Money is not the problem. I just don’t know how long I should keep persevering. How do you know when to give up on your dream, Dr. Toni? A Frustrated Scribe Dear Reader: Ah, this is a universal question. Perhaps it is not the right question. The dream may not be the problem. How you are going about making the dream happen may be the question. Much of what happens in Hollywood comes through relationships. People trust the people they know. Do you do volunteer work that is celebrity-driven or play tennis or racquetball where producers frequent? Then there is a deeper question. What do you want to have that you don’t have by getting this movie made? With the advent of the Apple computer, one can make movies inexpensively, so what is it about wide distribution that will up your happiness? If money is not a problem, studies show that after we are able to cover our basic necessities, making more money does not translate into more happiness. If you really want to see your script turned into a film, gather people around you that can help you make this happen independent of the studios. Don’t put your dream and your destiny in the hands of others. I would say the same thing to people who want to write the great American novel or a self-help book. Selfpublish. Enroll friends and family in your dreams who can financially invest in you and take your life back. Where do you know the most people who can do that? If that is not in Hollywood, and it is the East Coast, you might entertain the possibility of keeping your dream alive in a place you actually enjoy living in. All the best to you. I started with Eric Butterworth, attending Unity Sunday services at Lincoln Center in New York City 26 years ago. In 1994, I moved to Los Angeles and quickly found my way to the Agape International Spiritual Center founded by Michael Beckwith. I became a licensed Science of Mind Practitioner and Minister. Since then, I’ve studied “A Course in Miracles” on my own, and ancient Cherokee and Buddhist teachings with Venerable Dhyani Ywahoo. I’ve been offering spiritual classes and retreats for 14 years. And in 2009, I co-founded a thriving spiritual community called Project: Service L.A. Over these last couple of decades, I’ve invested in years of spiritual study and tens of thousands of dollars, too. I’ve learned a lot. Perhaps one of the most vital and valuable things that I’ve discovered on this path is that there’s a giant gap between studying something and living it. Reading books, taking classes, and listening to CDs is entirely different from actually living the teaching. That may seem obvious to you, but for many people, including myself, it was a very grey area. Like many people, I was convinced that studying something is practicing it, but it’s not. Consider the difference between studying what others think and feel about dance versus actually dancing and feeling it for yourself. These are two very different activities with two completely different results. Prayer Works! Like many others, the spiritual awakening I so deeply desired was eluding me and I couldn’t figure out why. I was reading the right books and taking the right classes with the right teachers. I thought I understood all the spiritual teachings. I believed I really got it. So, why wasn’t I having the profound
M I N D S TAT E S
spiritual awakening that I believed was possible for me? Why wasn’t I really getting it when I had all this knowledge and information? Why did I feel somewhat spiritually stupid while, at the same time, feeling spiritually superior to those who didn’t get it and didn’t understand? Perhaps I needed another book? How about “Spiritual Awakening for Dummies”? I wish I could say that I only felt that way for a week and then I finally listened to the right meditation CD and a miracle happened and I finally woke up, but the clarity eluded me for years. In late 2005, I became inspired to begin to invest several hours a day into my spiritual practice. I had been feeling the pull to commit myself more and more deeply, and finally I made the change. At that time I had many personal “problems” that were pushing me this way and that. I felt that I was surfing a stormy sea and that my only surfboard was my spiritual practice. God granted me some very juicy forgiveness opportunities. I had some deep, personal betrayals. I was lied to by people I trusted. My beloved Mom got a terminal cancer diagnosis. It was rough. During this stormy time, I made a dedication to be the love of my own life. I decided to surrender all my judgments and opinions of how I thought things should be. I decided to stop pouring my precious life energy into affirming the shoulda, woulda, coulda’s of the past, and instead I decided to dedicate myself to Love right then—every day, in every way, to the very best of my ability. I decided to love and forgive myself when I didn’t measure up, and I decided to fully live in the “now” moment that I had been teaching about. I had been teaching the Law of Cause and Effect for years before I ever made an actual commitment to live as though I fully understood it all of the time. Until I met Venerable Dhyani Ywahoo, I’d never met anyone who had a total commitment to be pristine in every area of their life. I must confess, it actually never occurred to me. Having not seen it demonstrated, I didn’t know that level of commitment was actually attainable by people like me. I prayed for Clarity, and it began to reveal itself in my mind and heart. I decided to get Real with a capital “R.” Real as in a representation of infinite, eternal Spirit—eternal Reality. I decided to be the clarity I was looking for. I intended to be strong and supportive for my family and with my counseling clients. It was at this time that I began to study the book, “A Course in Miracles.” I loved it from the start. I loved the beautiful language of the “Course.” The voice spoke right to my heart. I felt that I had found an old friend who knew exactly how to get through to me. I was dedicating myself to being a loving presence in my own life, and now I had the perfect companion. Living “A Course in Miracles” It wasn’t easy at all, but I was determined to shed the habits of negativity, blame, and shame that had haunted me all my life. I made a dedication to truly walk my talk and live “A Course in Miracles,” and that changed everything for me. I began to have the profound awakening that I had so deeply desired but couldn’t activate. Was it because of “A Course in Miracles”? Had I finally found the right book? Of course not. The difference was my dedication to Love itself. Now I know that I am Love, and every day I rejoice to walk my talk and purify my heart and mind so that I can be the Love. This is what I share in my free “Living A Course in Miracles” classes. Your decision to actually be the Love of your life is what is required for your awakening. Your choice to fully commit to walking your talk is the difference that you can make in the world. I invite you to begin today. And if you’d like support in doing it, I am here for you. That’s what friends are for. For more information, please visit www.JenniferHadley.com and www.livingacourseinmiracles.com. Contact Jennifer Hadley at Jennifer@jenniferhadley.com.

ow many of you have bent a spoon or fork before, other than the pesky piece of silverware that was caught in the garbage disposal? You will be amazed as the metal object you are holding begins to bend by using the power of your intention. It WILL happen! Psychokinesis (PK) is the ability of the mind to have a noticeable effect upon physical objects. This PK phenomenon will help you connect with more of the 90 percent of the unused portion of your mind’s power. Welcome to a new experience. In 1994, I attended my first spoon bending workshop. I was a skeptic with an open mind. (That sounds like an oxymoron, but so is plastic silverware.) As I sat among 75 other attendees, I noticed that almost everyone around me was bending their spoons and forks, yet mine still remained straight and rigid. I was trying to make it bend, but it just didn’t work. Then someone came up to me and strongly commanded me to just bend it. I looked up at him in shock. However, I did exactly what he told me to do. Suddenly the spoon I was holding began to bend. The strong command distracted me, which helped me get out of my own way. I suddenly thought about all the times I tried so hard to do something but got stuck and just gave up. Well, it was at that moment I felt this surge of power and freedom. And to my surprise, I continued to bend several spoons and forks with little to no

effort. There was a huge shift that occurred within me. I realized that the more I held myself back with doubt and skepticism, the more I was missing out in life. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Peak Performance Coach, I knew I wasn’t alone. I was driven to learn more about mind over metal. I also realized that to really grasp the concept of PK, I needed to understand more about our mind’s power and our body’s energy system. And then things began to happen. I was invited to demonstrate the use of intention as an aid in bending metal spoons and forks at Gary Craig’s EFT Ultimate Therapist training. That was a turning point in my life’s journey. From that moment on, I began helping others transform their own lives through the power of their mind and intention by turning an ordinary fork and spoon into a deformed pretzel in seconds. Here are some facts on how mind over metal works: Intention is known as thought, meaning, and purpose directed towards a goal, which resonates as vibration of frequencies. By connecting through thought, the molecular structure of the metal begins to change; as a result, bending can be accomplished with little or no physical effort. This process of “warm-forming” was termed by Jack Houck, a renowned psychokinesis specialist. Since the human brain is both a transmitter and a receiver of information, it is important to slow our brain wave (BW) frequencies to produce change in the vibrations of the molecules, whereby bending can occur. Learning to relax the mind can give us insight into how our body and mind are affected when we enter into different states of consciousness, and how to utilize each state to our benefit. Functioning at an Alpha (8 to 13 BW cycles per second) and Theta (4 to 8 BW cycles per second) range provides us with a broader awareness and focus ability. Therefore, by accessing an Alpha or Theta state, with reduced mental static and internal dialogue, a person is more receptive
M I N D S TAT E S to the PK phenomenon. While bending, some people report that the metal becomes warm, as if heat were coming through the material. It is postulated that the mind is creating conditions for energy to be deposited along the brain’s boundaries of the metal. Although data suggests that the above process is what most often happens in the metal, the key factor in this practice is the power of the mind and intention to accomplish such a task. Therefore, creating an unconscious connection with the metal is essential. Another important aspect in bending is that the individual must consciously be willing to bend the metal. They must make a mental connection with the object and deliberately will it to bend. Some pieces of stainless steel that have been warm-formed before have broken with a loud popping sound. Some other objects that have large internal stresses and a number of dislocations (silver plate and sterling silver) have bent while just being held in one hand without the use of the other. There is a short time span in which the metal becomes and remains soft. The key to bending is knowing when the metal loosens its structure (becomes rubberlike) and is ready to be bent, during which time a person can form the silverware into creative distorted shapes. When the mind interacts with the metal, it is necessary for the person to concentrate on the object intended to be bent. A command expressed out loud or within oneself is important for the warm-forming to occur. Most of the energy used in accomplishing a PK experience comes from a person’s intention coupled with the energy within themselves and the object being affected. The Motivational Institute of Hypnotherapy (MIOH) invites you to participate in this interactive experience, which will help you discover practical tools for permanent change. Join us on May 24 for a high energy, fun-filled Spoon Bending Workshop. If you ever wanted to create greater success and personal transformation, as well as shift old thoughts and behaviors and perhaps help others do the same, then this workshop is for you. Teaching the Spirit of Gadugi A Conversation with Elder Spiritual Leader, Running Wolf by Shannon Nies

n 1994, Rev. Bill “Running Wolf ” Davis, MSW co-founded the Gadohi Usquanigodi Native American Spiritual Centers, dedicated to providing an alternative to traditional Euro-American spirituality. Since then he has helped grow and evolve these communities, which span from the West Coast to the Midwest—from San Diego to Taos, Tulsa, and Chicago. This May, Running Wolf will lead a Spiritual Balancing Workshop and Ganvnowa Ceremony in San Diego, teaching Cherokee spiritual ways of restoring oneself and others in mind, body, and spirit. The event is open to all who are interested, regardless of age, background, or personal life journey. Recently, Running Wolf was kind enough to speak with me, not only about the upcoming event in San Diego, but also about Native American spiritual ways and practices. He spoke of the importance of love and community and continually evolving the presence of Spirit that lies within us all. Vision Magazine: Could you please talk about the Gadohi Usquanigodi Native American Spiritual Centers that you co-founded? Running Wolf: The primary intent of the communities was to provide Euro-

Americans a spiritual alternative that is more based on motivation through love and community, which we call Gadugi, versus the dominant motivation by fear, which is present in mainstream EuroAmerican culture. You have to understand that the largest spiritual movement in the United States today is what’s known as the Conservative Christian Movement, which is one Left to right: Grandfather Bernal (Taos Pueblo), Chief Le Tuala Samoa that is culturally embedded and Running Wolf in motivation through fear and a strongly established sense of lack of abundance in the world. That tends to encourage or promote individualism and accumulation of personal wealth, personal gain, over an attitude of helping each other in the context that we’re all supposed to be in this together, we’re all community, we’re all family. VM: How will the Spirit Balancing Workshop in San Diego teach Cherokee spiritual ways to help restore the body, mind, and spirit? RW: The emphasis will be on learning how to live in harmony with Creator and all of Creation through our spiritual teachings. And one of the things I need to point out is that there is a significant difference between Native American Christianity and Euro-American Christianity. In Native American Christianity, we incorporate our traditional ceremonies, beliefs, and practices into our Christian teachings. So it’s a merging of the two. This is based on our own belief in honoring the sacredness of those who give of themselves so that others may live. We respect elders, teachers, prophets, preachers, healers, medicine people (which is one of my titles). In our experience, for many Cherokees and other Native Americans across the country, there has been no person who has done more to give of oneself than Yeshua. (Jesus is the Greek translation of His name, but the actual Hebrew name of Jesus is Yeshua.) VM: Please talk about the Ganvnowa Ceremony following the workshop in San Diego. RW: There are many different ceremonies which we practice to help us get into an altered state of awareness of the presence of our Creator and Spirit Helpers, who you might call angels. We have specific names for them and roles. And the Pipe Circle [Ganvnowa Ceremony] is one ceremony in which everyone, regardless of physical health, age, whatever, is able to participate. And we sit in a circle for many reasons. One is to show the continuity of Spirit, the continuity of life, and also the equality of all people, regardless of your individual life journey. Everyone has an opportunity within the circle to express themselves to Creator on behalf of those who are in need. And we join together in one mind, one body, one spirit by lifting up the tobacco smoke, which is a gift to Creator.

“And we sit in a circle for many reasons. One is to show the continuity of Spirit, the continuity of life, and also the equality of all people, regardless of your individual life journey.” In the physical world, we share gifts in the form of objects, material things. Those entities that exist in the realm of Spirit have no use for that. But what they do have use for, or what they like to see, is our willingness to share the life force of our being on behalf of those who are in need. Because anybody can pray. But if there’s no essence attached to that prayer—no genuineness, no authenticity—then why should anyone pay attention to it? VM: Our theme for May is Personal Journeys. What does that mean to you, and how has your personal journey influenced your teachings? RW: Each of us as individuals in that context is on our own unique journey with Spirit. And no two journeys are alike. We share common ceremonies, common frames of reference, and common experiences, but our interpretations are unique to us and to our communion with Creator and the rest of Creation. In our tradition and our way, we believe that if we are not actively seeking to grow and evolve as spiritual beings and as human beings in a good and healthy way, then our souls will diminish and fade away. You see that around you all the time. It’s easy to spot people who are turning their back on Creator and Spirit because they live at the base level of emotional maturity and emotional development. They are very heavily motivated by fear, caught up in this whole “good guy, bad guy” thing, acting out in violent and aggressive behavior, being predatory towards others. This is characteristic of people who are not embracing that connection with Creator. And that’s their choice; they have free will just like everybody else. But that’s what they’re choosing in their journey. And there are those who choose to grow and evolve in the Spirit of Creator in a good and healthy way, and in so doing, receive gifts from Creator to help us on our journey. One of those gifts is being able to be together in community, because we need community, we need each other. And Creator uses us to help one another along our path, whatever that may be. It can be a beautiful thing. Now as far as my own personal experiences, well, in our tradition it’s not a really good thing to toot your own horn, so to speak, so I’m not used to really talking a whole lot about that. Mostly people talk about me. [Laughs.] We don’t give ourselves titles; people in the community gives us our titles. For instance, when my grandfather passed away and I did a burial ceremony for him, people started referring to me as Grandfather. That’s an acceptance by the people for who you are. So most people today call me Grandfather. And I’ve got the white beard to prove it. [Laughs.] continued on page 41

Aries: Temperance (9 of Wands) 3/21–4/19 Balance has certainly become a buzzword, although its meaning is often ambiguous. The misunderstanding of this ancient concept is caused by the dualism of the mind. Balance doesn’t mean a little of this and a little of that, nor is it avoidance of conflict. It’s more closely related to the concept of cooking and the blending of different ingredients—experiences, opinions, thoughts, feelings, and conflicts—to create a new recipe for living. Let your guard down and participate in this great experiment called life. Temper your feelings of resentment with compassion, fear with trust, apathy with curiosity, and idealism with practicality.
Libra: Chariot (Knight of Swords) 9/23 – 10/23 Get ready for a turbulent ride this month as challenges seem to lurk around every corner. No matter what happens, you are ultimately responsible for your actions. Composure will lead to clarity; do not be driven into further trouble by reacting impulsively. The winds of change will likely blow many of your current plans into disarray. Don’t give up; simply take a breath and find an alternate path. You’ll discover options that actually benefit you. Be mindful of your words, especially when provoked, or you’re likely to destroy a dear relationship. And lastly, use extra caution while driving.
Taurus: Tower (2 of Wands) 4/20 – 5/21 You’re in the process of deconstruction and there’s still some rubble to salvage. Whatever fell apart or didn’t turn out as planned last month has left some unexpected options to work with. Don’t dismay over a loss or you’ll miss out on what’s left. There’s room for you to build a more viable foundation. You’ll find that when you’re least expecting it, someone with a similar vision will surface. This is a prime time for sharing resources, so be practical about what you want and stay open to receiving it.
Scorpio: Moon (Knight of Pentacles) 10/24 – 11/22 This is an important time to slow down and rest, both physically and emotionally, or risk overwhelm. Weed out any unnecessary work from your routine and avoid taking on extra tasks or new projects. Simply stick to what you’re already doing. Don’t panic when money issues cause more anxiety than usual, as fear only muddles your mind and inhibits problem solving. Although an unexpected and costly annoyance will arise, it’s only momentary. Even if it’s not technically your problem, you’ll be responsible for making amends. Be cautious about what you put on the back burner.
Gemini: Star (Page of Swords) 5/22 – 6/21 If wishes were wings, you could fly above your problems until they were merely specks of dust. This is possible when you develop self-confidence. The commentary in your head can be relentless, pointing out pitfalls before they even exist. The mind, like a child, will taunt you until you react out of anger or recoil out of fear. Don’t believe everything you hear, especially the ranting in your head! A seemingly hopeless situation turns out to have a dim light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your faith strong and focus on the solution, not the problem.
Sagittarius: Devil (7 of Swords) 11/23 – 12/21 It has been said that mistakes are the portals of discovery. However, when you become attached to or avoid these mistakes, you lose opportunities for growth, or, even worse, denial sets in. There may be some severe challenges this month that require careful cleanup. Something that was recently overlooked may cause you unexpected consequences. Be sure to confront it right away because the results could benefit you in ways you never imagined. Be aware that ANY dishonest activity will cause a cascade of negative effects, so be true to yourself no matter how hard it is.
Cancer: Emperor (5 of Pentacles) 6/22 – 7/22 Stability is often mistaken for control. Stability is confidently knowing that in any circumstance, you will remain secure in your own right and that nothing can take that away from you. Like any good leader knows, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. This is one of those times. You will be challenged in an area that relates to your security, and although the results could be dismal, this too will pass. Fathers and bosses could be implicated in this quandary as they play a part in lessons of authority.
Capricorn: Lovers (Queen of Cups) 12/22 – 1/20 A deeply emotional experience connects you to past memories in a way that is irrational and mysterious. You may think you are in control of your choices, but when you look deeper you’ll realize that most of your actions are motivated by subconscious feelings. Take inventory of your current relationships, home life, work, spiritual practice, health, and finances. Notice how these areas relate to your state of being. Usually a mixed-up inner world translates to a mixed-up outer world. To make conscious decisions is to be aware of the motivations behind them. Take a closer look.
Leo: Wheel of Fortune (8 of Wands) 7/23 – 8/23 Changes on the horizon promise an exciting time ahead. Travel is possible around the end of the month. Business ventures started in the past year finally begin to show favorable outcomes. Don’t be too hasty, though, or you might turn an opportunity into a struggle; it’s all about timing right now. You may need to consolidate some of your current projects to free up the space needed for these changes. Life has a peculiar way of giving just what is needed, so don’t swim against the current—just let it flow.
Aquarius: Magician (Queen of Swords) 1/21 – 2/18 Life is what you make of it—so what are you making of it? When you’re willing to accept the responsibility that comes with actively creating your life, there’s less room for complaining and more motivation to take charge! You must be ready to turn problems into opportunities. Instead of dwelling on grievances, use your critical thinking to solve problems and take action. If you continue talking in circles about what’s bothering you, an altercation at the end of the month may knock you off your soapbox. Take responsibility for your own shortcomings before pointing the finger at someone else.
Virgo: Justice (3 of Pentacles) 8/24 – 9/22 Juggling too many projects can lead to sloppy errors, as can working without proper guidelines. Your work may be judged this month as being less than acceptable. Before getting pulled in different directions, it would be wise to finish what you started. If you don’t, you might not be able to handle the consequences. Be cautious of learning institutions, certifications, and business logistics, and do appropriate background checks before investing time and money. This is also a good time to consolidate records and receipts. Don’t take any shortcuts with rules and regulations—Big Brother is watching!
Pisces: High Priestess (9 of Pentacles) 2/19 – 3/20 Something is not as it appears, and although you think you see the whole situation, there’s more under the surface. Be patient and keep your hunches to yourself; the truth will be revealed in time. Even if you catch someone red handed, wait—they will tangle themselves in a web of deceit. You, too, will be caught if you are unscrupulous in your affairs. The 4th is a perfect day for magic, ceremonial or practical. Focus your intuition on an unresolved situation and you’ll receive a message. P.S. This isn’t a good time for financial investments or big decisions.

The Hero’s Journey by Alisha Olivier
D
id you know that you’re a hero, the lead role in an intricately woven epic story? You are, and now is the time for you to awaken to your greatness, get on the path and take an adventure, co-creating the best story ever told. Seventeen years ago, a serious car accident left me with severe whiplash and a fractured skull. There was a moment after the accident when I remember looking down at my body, circled with paramedics and others in the car. I saw my short life flash on a screen as if I were watching a film. I saw the faces of my loved ones and felt a yearning to be with them. A moment passed and then I was looking up at those around me asking me my name, the date, the name of the president. My recovery was long and left me feeling disconnected from others and from life. Being 16 years old, I created more of a melodrama then an epic story out of the experience. I began searching for answers, seeking love and acceptance outside of myself. This searching led me down a dark path, into the world of alcohol, drugs, and undesirable company. Completely lost, alone, and empty, I no longer felt that youthful innocence or a connection to the world. When I looked in the mirror, I saw a stranger staring back at me. Going to school became increasingly difficult as I was unable to concentrate and do what was required of me. I decided it was time to call it quits; I walked into the office, turned in my books and walked away, leaving my junior year of high school behind me. Unfortunately, I was unable to leave the pain I was feeling there with my books, and so I continued my downward spiral. One day my mother walked into my room. “Alisha,” she said, “I give up.” “Give up on what?” I asked. “I give up on you.” I felt my pounding heart sink. “You can’t do that,” I snapped, choking back tears. “You are my mother.”
nothing you can’t do or be. Love, Mom.” I felt the truth of her words sweep across my skin, leaving goosebumps. As I flipped through the pages, the words came alive and danced within my heart. Everything I had been seeking outside of myself was really within me. This was the beginning of my hero’s journey… The next fall I re-enrolled in school, worked very hard to catch up, and graduated with my class. I went on to college, and then 10 years later my journey led me to where it began—with Deepak. This time I was blessed to work, learn, and teach with him at the Chopra Center. My journey has been thrilling, filled with challenges, discomfort, great courage, strength, faith, and love. Through it all I have uncovered my life’s passion and purpose to guide others through their personal journey, to awaken the hero within and support them as they walk the path that is before them. Over the years, I have created a very powerful and effective program called Healing from Within. It provides an important map, along with loving support and guidance, and is tailored to honor individuals and their unique journey. All too often I see people struggle, trying to find the answers outside of themselves or trying to get through life by themselves. In my experience, in order to stand firmly in ourselves, we need support and wisdom along the way, along the path of our hero’s journey. If you are ready to embark on your hero’s journey, please contact Tranquility Retreats by e-mailing wisdom@TranquilityRetreats.com or calling 760.436.2735. “Yes I can, because you have already given up on yourself.” Those words lingered in the chilly air. (Being a mother myself, now I know this was crafty mother’s magic. She hadn’t given up, but she was afraid of losing me and needed me to wake up.) As she left my room, she handed me a small book and said, “This is my last gift to you.” I sat on my bed and read the title: “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra. I opened the cover, and inside my mother had written, “Alisha, if you can read and apply these seven spiritual laws, there is

as it ever seemed as if the whole world is conspiring against you? Do you ever feel weighed down by physical or emotional pain and fear that you are powerless to change your circumstances? Has a voice inside of you told you that you just don’t have what it takes, that you are destined to feel inadequate and suffer for the rest of your life? If so, you are far from alone. As the Buddha said ages ago, the First Noble Truth is dukkha. This is a Sanskrit term from sacred Yogic texts written long before the Buddha. We find it referenced in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In general, dukkha means suffering, but like most Sanskrit words, it is layered with meaning. There is happiness and there is sorrow in the world. We win and then we lose. It rains and then it shines. Pleasure comes and goes. Pain does the same. This fluctuation, this impermanence, causes us to suffer because we are taught to always seek pleasure and victory while avoiding the opposites at all costs. for thousands of years, perhaps from the very beginning of human times. We also suffer because we have been socialized to surrender our inherent power. We seek our identities in the external—through our possessions, our social groups, our fashion, our careers. Of course, these all change, so we perpetually set ourselves up for dukkha. We’ve also become pacified by mass media, living much of our lives vicariously, watching dramas and sports, other people having adventures, being stars on the stage of life. We are taught that we can mask our pain with the right pills, or escape into the bottom of a bottle of beer. So here’s the good news: You are not a second-class human being. You don’t have to look outside of yourself for contentment, healing, power, or wholeness. This is also the message of the Buddha and of Vedic Wisdom. Better yet, all of your suffering is a blessing in disguise. It’s a catalyst for you to make a shift, transform your life, heal yourself, and ultimately manifest your fullest potential. No matter what your circumstance, no matter how daunting it seems, you have this inherent power. It’s your birthright. I know this because I learned it the hard way. I was a foreign war correspondent for network news. I traveled the world covering exciting, momentous events from the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan to the Gulf War, from apartheid in South Africa to revolutions in Central America, from chaos in China to drug wars in South America. It was the life of my dreams and it completely defined who I was. I was ecstatically happy and fulfilled, fully convinced that my entire life was going to be an amazing adventure. Then I broke my back in a tropical storm. A failed surgery cost me my precious career. I began a life trapped in a body brace, gripped with pain and dependent on narcotic medications and antidepressants. And that was just the beginning. After years of being unable to sit up for a meal or walk without a cane, I was diagnosed with severely advanced cancer from exposure to depleted uranium in the Gulf War. My doctors gave me no more than two years to live, and even heavier medications. I fell into the abyss and hit the bottom. I was convinced that I was doomed, that I was powerless, and that my death was inevitable. When the diagnosis came, my only child had just been born. As my world crumbled, he was my last touchstone, the only thing left that I cared about. When he turned 2 years old, I was on the brink of checking out. My life was confined to endless pill taking, drinking to escape myself, lying on the couch, and barely hobbling from room to room. That’s when he looked me in the eyes, began to softly cry, and pleaded, “Get up, Daddy.” It hit me like a bulldozer. I was leaving this beautiful child without a father. And the father he had fell far short of the father he deserved. I had no idea how to honor this, how to get up. The pain from my broken back and cancer was overwhelming, and all of my efforts at physical therapy had failed. I felt weak, impotent, powerless, and worthless. After days of anguish, with the mantra “Get up, Daddy” constantly rolling through my mind, I took the strong advice of my relatives and decided to detox from the years of drugs and at least die with dignity. I checked into the hospital detox ward and went at it cold turkey. It was
C U LT U R E the darkest night of the soul. Actually, seven dark nights. I felt demons tear at my flesh. I went into convulsions, hot sweats, cold spells, hallucinations. I ended up curled into a ball on the linoleum floor in the darkest corner of my room not knowing who or where I was. When it was over, the pain was 10 times worse. I had no idea what to do next. I just wanted to die. That’s when my doctor invited me to enter an experimental program based on ancient Eastern and modern holistic healing modalities. The very first day, as I listened to a guided visualization by Dr. Emmett Miller, a tiny light went on somewhere deep within me. The jaded war correspondent of my past would have scoffed at this, but I clung to it like it was a beacon for a ship lost at sea. A few weeks later, I was introduced to therapeutic Yoga. The tiny light inside became as bright as the sun. Somehow I knew there was a power within me, a way out of dukkha, a way to heal. Then the clinic closed down. Insurance companies would not reimburse it for the programs because they were out of the mainstream. I almost fell back into the abyss, but I caught myself. “You can do this,” an inner voice said. “You can get up, Daddy.” I went home and turned a small bedroom into my “Himalayan Cave.” I practiced, studied, and lived Yoga for 12 to 16 hours every day, rising at 3 a.m. and only taking breaks to be with my son. I would stay in my cave often until midnight, or just fall asleep on my mat. Asanas, the Yoga postures that are often thought to be Yoga itself, were a critical aspect of my practice, but there was much more. I fasted for prolonged periods and performed hours of Pranayama,

meditation, and visualization. I delved into Ayurvedic purifications as well, became vegan, and ultimately took 85 pounds off my bloated body, calling this my “organic chemotherapy.” Throughout this process I chanted, “Get up, Daddy,” listened to an inner voice that became louder and spoke with greater clarity, felt a radiant inner light nourishing me and somehow understood that, against all odds, I would heal. After a full year, I realized one morning that the back pain that had tormented me for more than a decade was gone. A year later I realized the cancer was gone. I had no scientific evidence of this. I had stopped going to Western doctors. I just knew it was gone. As happens with so many of us who experience deep healing, my heart and soul have guided me into sharing the transformative powers of Yoga and Ayurveda. I have come to realize that while all life might be suffering, there is a way out, just as Vedic Wisdom tells us. We each have a tremendous inner power to take charge of our lives and transform ourselves. It’s our birthright. Our nature. Our inheritance from the Divine. That light, that voice within you, is your greatest Guru. It is the voice of eternal wisdom and self-empowerment. The Guru truly is You. In sharing my journey of finding the inner Guru, I realize that I am unremarkable. I have not accomplished anything unique. We all have this transformative capacity. In fact, if someone as depressed, self-pitying, broken, and miserable as I was can crawl out of the abyss, just about anyone can. As a healing guide, I have seen it happen time and time again. People who seek their inner Guru with commitment and devotion always find it, and they become beacons of light for us all. Bhava will be teaching a special course entitled “The Guru is You” at the upcoming San Diego Yoga Journal Conference this July. For details, please see www. deepyoga.com.

HEALING ARTS
Healer Heal Thy Self by Louix Dor Dempriey
M
any healing practitioners have shared with me their bewilderment over assuming illnesses or conditions from their clients, especially when they truly felt that their intentions were ones of loving service to another. Why would a healer or anyone become ill through healing others? The answer is based on the Universal Law which states that any condition or circumstance which your soul needs you to have in order to purge something from within yourself, you get. How you get it is a matter of harmonic convergence between demand and supply. Does it matter whether you drew your circumstance by way of a client, a passerby, recycled air on an airplane, or germs on a railing, in order to initiate your process? The means is not important. One reason why healers take on the conditions of their clients is that sometimes people have made karmic agreements (contracts), in past or present lives, to help others in this way. In this scenario, they would be taking on the conditions whether or not they were the patient’s healer, brother, friend, or even total stranger. The fact that the one assuming (i.e. taking on) the condition is in the healer role is irrelevant. You would be taking it on anyway. Another reason, which is not commonly known, is that certain conditions or circumstances—for karmic reasons—can only find completion (full transcendence) by playing out through the human experience. Thus, if they are lifted or moved out of a patient, they still need to be fulfilled through a human host. In some cases, if the healer is helping to rid an individual of a condition, the healer may have to carry it within him- or herself. (This dynamic accounts for a very small percentage of cases.) The main reason healers (this includes channels, doctors, shamans, etc.) take on symptoms and conditions from their clients/patients—and the focus of this article—is one which warrants immediate attention. Many healers become ill while healing others because of their attachments. In other words, the ego personality has an investment, an energetic hook, in what they are doing. There are many types of these hooks, including: being impressed
22

by one’s own abilities; wanting to impress others; seeking approval, recognition, or fame; having expectations of (or attachment to) results; etc. When one has expectations or attachments surrounding the result, one has placed a condition on love. Therefore, God’s unconditional love (the power that heals) cannot flow unhindered and in the way it is Divinely intended and created to do. Similarly, if one is attached to the process, one can just as easily become attached to (affected by) the illness or any of its symptoms and side effects. Furthermore, these attachments may be either conscious or unconscious and still have the same effect on the healer. Another part of the problem stems from a gross misunderstanding of what a healer is and of the nature of healing. Humanity collectively agrees that the healer is the “doer.” To that, many will say, “No. I disagree. I am the instrument, I am the vessel.” Perhaps, conceptually, one might think so, but I am talking about belief systems, which are very different than thoughts or opinions. The belief system currently held on this planet is that healers “fix” people. Inherent in that distorted belief is a consciousness of separation. It implies that the client is broken, which implies that he or she is less than the perfection of God’s creation. This is tantamount to saying that God made a mistake and that God is fallible. Consequently, any healers who hold the conscious or unconscious belief that they are fixing others are, in essence, elevating and separating themselves from their clients and, ultimately, from God. Implicit in one’s understanding of healing as “fixing,” there is a judgment. The origin of this judgment is, again, fear-based. People unconsciously
HEALING ARTS fear pain because they do not understand that pain actually is healing itself. All pain is growth. Furthermore, all pain experienced is non-loving energy which is leaving the body. The soul draws situations and circumstances for the purpose of extricating the energies (and consciousness) of separation from the self. In other words, pain is one way people experience separation. Pain—a very natural and important part of the healing process—is falsely perceived as the enemy because most people are seeking comfort more than growth. The fact that people rush to doctors to obtain pain “killers” bespeaks this self-deluding belief system. Human beings molt, just like crabs and snakes. Our way is simply not as visible… Or is it? Hair, skin, cells—these all molt and replenish themselves. But so does our whole being. The one aspect of molting which humans deny, avoid, and resist the most is the molting of consciousness. Paradoxically, this is the most important part of the healing process because it affects all others and is the very vehicle for endearing one into the heart of God and for realizing one’s own divinity. Does one have to experience pain as part of the growth process? Absolutely not. God did not create your pain and suffering—you did. It is not growth but resistance to growth which causes pain. Simply put, all pain is resistance to God’s will. It is for this reason that the soul, in its infinite wisdom, has to sometimes resort to drastic measures in order to elicit the surrender of the separate ego personality’s tyrannical, fear-stricken control over the course of one’s life on earth, a life which is about nothing else than uniting with The Beloved. And every time the consciousness outgrows its shell, which can happen from one to one hundred times a day, it molts. It is the resistance to this very necessary and ongoing growth process of the soul incarnate that has come to be known as pain. Unfortunately, the antiquated paradigm of healing is still held in the collective grid of humanity’s consciousness. Independent of what any healers think about themselves or their practices, it is a stain on humanity’s consciousness which has yet to be fully transmuted. In truth, the healer is not solely responsible for the healing. The healer allows and facilitates love. Love is the power that heals. Though this is widely known, it is still only half of the Law of Healing. (I prefer to think of healing as “transformation” because it does not hold the connotation that one is fixing something). The second half of the Law of Healing is faith. As love is
the power that heals, faith is the power which allows love to heal. Ideally, the healer’s role is to provide a clear, surrendered, unconditionally-loving conduit through which God’s love can flow. The client’s role is to provide faith in the power of God’s love to transform. The healer’s faith does not negate the necessity of the client’s faith. The process and relationship is co-creative. If both aspects of the Law of Healing are not present, transformation does not occur. In cases wherein clients did not consciously acknowledge faith in the healer, God, the cure, the process, or themselves—yet still experienced “healing”—the faith was present and strong enough in their subconscious to create the transformation. On the other end of the spectrum is the “It’s not me; it’s all God” mentality. This false humility bespeaks a flavor of unworthiness. It is God, and it is you—as God, and as an extension of God. It is all co-creative. Beneath this veneer lies arrogance and vanity. How dare you demean yourself as God! There is a place which lies in the center, a place neither boastful nor shameful—the place of the I AM. To know oneself as God, while constantly and reverently deferring to the supreme power and majesty of God, is a sign of mastery. From this state of transcendence, true humility is born. It is from this state of being that a true healer can bring unconditional self, unconditional God, and unconditional love to the table. If you really want to see magic happen, see all of your clients as whole and perfect as they are now, prior to rendering your services to them. Then watch the glory and power of God’s love further perfect their already-perfect expression of themselves as continued on page 41

Donavon Rides the Waves of
A Conversation with Donavon Frankenreiter by Sydney L. Murray
Creativity on His Journey Through Life
D
onavon Frankenreiter has such an amazing attitude, and I wonder if it’s because he is a surfer. I know that any time I ride Mother Ocean I am always reconnected to Spirit. Frankenreiter has lived a full life. Starting as a professional surfer at age 16, he has been traveling the world ever since, and he greatly appreciates his time among other cultures. He also picked up the guitar and now takes it with him on his travels. Frankenreiter’s lyrics are poetry, and my heart is stronger after listening to one of his songs from “Glow,” his new album. His wit and gratitude for life is a great combination. He is a musician with great heart. Vision Magazine: Our theme for May is Personal Journeys. How would you describe your journey so far in this lifetime? Donavon Frankenreiter: At the age of 16, I turned professional at surfing. I have been traveling extensively around the world ever since then. I’m 39 now. I just think that that dream was a real massive one and the fact that surfing has kind of given me everything that I have in my life is really amazing. It’s definitely like playing music in so many ways. When I picked up the guitar, I just brought it with me, traveling everywhere and connecting with the people I met. I think seeing the world, being in different countries and learning about different cultures… in my life was sort of the biggest journey, or at least half, of what has happened. Another significant part of my life started when I got married 11 years ago to my wife. She has been the one [person] that really pushed me in the process of writing songs and singing. So if it wasn’t for meeting her and having her challenge me and say all those things to me and pushing me to sing and write, I don’t know if I’d be doing what I’m doing today. It’s been incredible, and all the amazing experiences I have had—surfing, music, getting married, having two kids, doing a bunch of TV stuff. I’m on the road a lot. I’m on the road eight months out of the year, but I love it. I’ve been so used to traveling and being on the road. For me, it’s just incredible to be a part of so many different countries in the world and be a part of different cultures. I find that so interesting. Those experiences are the things that inspired me to write music. VM: What are your two sons’ names? DF: Hendrix and Ozzy. VM: And I’m sure they’re surfers. Are they musicians? DF: Yeah, well they’re 9 and 5, so they do whatever Dad does and then some. They surf and play music, and they have a whole bunch of songs they’ve done that are just classic.
24
VM: Speaking of lyrics, yours are poetry to me. How do you create a song? DF: It’s sort of like, maybe I’ll sit down at the guitar, and sometimes the chorus happens first, and sometimes it’ll be something I wrote on an airplane, and verses will come out, and then I’ll have a chorus. Sometimes songs write themselves really quickly, too. Like that “A.I.” song that I wrote for Andy [Irons], who passed away, kind of like how I feel, or something that I’d love to say to him. I kind of just sat down and wrote that. That [song] just kind of wrote itself very quickly, and that’s how some songs come out, too. They’re all different. Sometimes it takes a long time to even write one song. It’s one of those things where, like music and surfing, to me, they’re definitely my release, in ways. I love them so much. (Also being with my family, my kids and my wife.) Those two components—surfing and music—make me so happy inside, and being by the beach and swimming in the ocean. If I pick up the guitar, that makes me feel so good, and it reminds me of how lucky I am to do what I’m doing. VM: Your words are relatively, mostly very positive. How do you keep yourself moving forward in your life? DF: I always have that philosophy to just enjoy what’s happening in the moment. I think if you really get mentally wrapped up in things, wanting to be somewhere or having something… But I guess it’s positive if it keeps you working and performing daily. I think that’s the one thing that I remember, everything that I’m doing daily. I learn a lot from what’s currently happening, but I don’t dwell on the past too much. I don’t think it works to keep talking about the same story or experience from 15 or 20 years ago. Every record I put out I am different person in a lot of ways, and it’s a reflection of the last two or three years. So moving forward, you don’t want to get stuck and in a rut or ever become complacent. You don’t want to become too comfortable. I think it is always great to challenge yourself. It is good to go back and think about the past,

but I don’t try to recreate what I have already done. I like to move forward. So I think, lyrically, things come out of that in a positive way because I feel so positive and happy playing music. I’ve never sat down and consciously thought, I just want to write happy stuff. When I pick up the guitar, I think, naturally it doesn’t come out of me as this depressing [music]… VM: I just love that song, “Start Livin’.” It has so many components. It makes me think of that line from “Shawshank Redemption”: “Get busy living or get busy dying.” DF: It’s incredible. That Start Livin’ thing was the inspiration, really, of the whole record…losing a friend, writing that song, “A.I.,” and then all of the other things that are kind of encompassing the record—lyrically, musically. It’s sort of like “Start Livin’” was the theme for me to like, don’t worry about yesterday or what’s going to happen tomorrow. VM: And that song, “In Your Dreams,” about the house you grew up in as a kid—what was that like? What was the experience? DF: My mom was always spiritual and so was her mom. It’s the experiences that would happen when I was in this house. You could just hear things happening in that house, and see things. Everybody had a very strange feeling. I just remember them saying, don’t ever look away from the things you cannot see. Even the darkest spots [you are in] could be the most beautiful if you see something in there; look for it. I always try to tell my kids that, because they always get scared of the dark. I’m like, don’t be scared, it would be great if you could see something in the dark; that means you can see more around you and in other ways. VM: What is the key to living a creative life? DF: I feel like I’m very lucky in a lot of ways, that I do two things that I love and both careers that are extremely creative. So it’s easy, not really easy, but I just feel like, just being able to observe and explore and do all the things that I do—surfing, music, writing
music and recording—those few things are very creative things to do. And I think it’s also good for me to do other things other that I love. We have a couple of acres, so there’s a lot of gardening and taking care of the land. I love doing that kind of stuff, being creative in that way. I tried painting and that was really interesting to me. I think it’s great if you are able to do that. I think everybody has a creative side, one thing everybody’s got to do, I think, and that’s fun. VM: I love that line, “Never forget about what you can do, and start living.” Do you have any kind of passion for service organizations, or how do you give back in any way? DF: I’m living here in Kauai. I always do stuff for school benefits in Kauai. (All the shows I do in Kauai are benefits.) When I’m out on the road, I do a lot of stuff for Heal the Bay. I’ve got a big show coming up for Heal the Bay on July 5 in California. I also do stuff for SurfAid and Surfrider Foundation. Basically if anything works out where somebody calls me and I’m there, I feel like that’s the most important thing you can do. The louder your voice is, sort of the bigger the star you become; your obligation to give back is greater. Also, to speak about things that might change our world for other generations or even the world around you—I think that’s beautiful. I think that’s important for each one us to do what they are passionate about. I think it’s something that everybody should do; if they don’t, then (at least) just voice it at one point or another. You need to become at the level where you can do stuff. People can make a big difference. A lot of artists and movie actors…they can be heard. And that’s important that people do that. And if it’s a known person, someone that people relate to, it has a bigger impression. VM: And if there were one, what would be the biggest influence in your life? DF: The biggest influence, I think, is being a dad and being a husband. That is what really matters and is what has changed me in so many ways, for better. And just my wife, pushing me in so many great positive directions. There’s never a day, there’s never a dull moment with two boys, or having kids. continued on page 46 W W W.VI S I O N M AG A Z I N E .C O M • M AY 2 012 • VI S I O N M AG A Z I N E

The Miracle Workers Handbook: Seven Levels of Power and Manifestation of the Virgin Mary A Conversation with Sherrie Dillard by Sydney L. Murray
T
he Virgin Mary, or Mary, is found in so many cultures around the world, and that has always struck me as incongruous. Now it seems so perfect. The essence of Mary has always been, to me, one of grace and of loving joy and benevolence. Recently I was sent a book that resonated with me. It is called the “Miracle Workers Handbook.” I would like to introduce you to the book’s author, Sherrie Dillard. Vision Magazine: How did you first become aware of Mary’s energies? Sherrie Dillard: I’ve never been aware of Mary within a church because I didn’t grow up with her in a church. So my connection with Mary has always been a more spiritual connection, and she was very persistent, unexpectedly, with my work as an intuitive and medium, and even my own personal life, really feeling her presence and feeling a connection and a comfort and guidance with her. So it’s really always been kind of a progression. I remember standing in my backyard, and I felt like there was a nun standing there behind me, saying, “You need to write this [book].” I knew that my publisher would not want it. I knew that and I was right. I asked myself if I had read it in a book or if I had imagined the whole scenario. It never left me. It was a persistent thought. She [Mary] is not the most popular metaphysical figure. I knew it was not going to be easy going into the market [of], “Oh great, a book about Mary.” It was just an intuitive knowing that this is what I had to be doing. VM: I feel like there is something in the energy right now in 2012 about the feminine wisdom, if you will, that is really poignant and very strong and I think a lot of people are looking for it. So to me it seems perfectly appropriate and welcome. SD: I would definitely agree with you in that there is definitely a shift going on right now. I kind of had that awareness at that time, although I wasn’t
“My feeling is that we are ascending, and that the divine feminine, through Mary in part, is coming to help us to move into our spiritual body more.”

quite piecing it all together. And then once I started writing, it really hit me over the head that this is a really big shift that we’re going through. And that area’s kind of her energy, which is part of the divine feminine. That got me started into understanding the seven levels, so I can just jump into that for a moment. The phenomenon is not about her doing something for us, but it’s more of a message about developing that within us. The first level is her virginity, which is her pure spirit. And drawing from that pure spirit in that the message that she gives to us—with virginity—is drawing from our own pure spirit Sherrie Dillard and realizing that it doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past, it doesn’t matter what education [you have] or mistakes we’ve made. Mary’s path is about grace and it’s about the miraculous and the ability to shift in the present time. So the second level is her [Mary’s] communication with Archangel Gabriel. That is about our ability to communicate and commune with spiritual realms and to receive more conscious guidance in our day. And really, I think with Mary, what it’s about, too, is kind of the assurance that we can communicate with her, that her energy is attainable. She appeals to people who don’t feel worthy or what they’ve done is good or enough to have a real spiritual connection. What I was trying to do in the third step is help people to understand how grace is naturally in operation in our life. That was the beginning of the chapter, understanding that miraculous conception is trying to happen all of the time. I think it’s right there, pushing on us saying, “Here I am, here I am, here I am,” but we don’t fully receive that. If you go from step two, which is listening, communing, communicating, asking for that presence, step three is simply becoming aware when that is present, and listening and then going into the second part of, I’ve got the power, and then the manifestation of each level. The manifestation of that is invoking grace, invoking Mary’s presence and really living mind, body, and spirit, and receiving that grace. VM: Receiving, for me, was key in that chapter. Because you talk about the miracles, and they are there, but sometimes we are rushing around. And so for me it was about receiving what’s already there, what’s always there. SD: I really think that that’s one of the biggest shifts with the divine feminine. I have to train myself even now [to listen]. I walk around and I realize how much my brain is not accustomed to receiving. When I just say to myself, “Okay, just receive,” I can feel myself relax, I can feel myself take it in, and I can feel this calm come in. But normally I am in that thinking place of, ‘What do you have to do? What do you have to think? Get there, get there.’ It’s a huge shift to just say, “Open your heart, open your solar plexus, open yourself,” and just receive. It happens really quickly. (I think it happens quickly for everybody.) I think it’s part of a bigger, collective kind of archetypal programming or with that paradigm perhaps
F E AT U R E that we’ve been in that acquisition made: go out and get, figure it out, push. Action—go go go! Right before I wrote this book, my life really changed. I was divorced, I left a home, and I ended up moving into an older rental that I had owned. I had to fix it up. I felt lonely. And here I am writing this book about marriage. What’s going on here? Am I being pushed to write the book? It felt strange. And I remember asking, “Why am I writing this book?” It was just so clear that this was part of the process. What you’re in is an important spiritual process—just accept it. Don’t ask it, don’t judge it, and don’t be, “This isn’t good enough.” It doesn’t mean anything, success/ failure. Just accept who you are. And pregnancy is about that. It’s about when what’s going on outside of us doesn’t match that inner place. Like when you are in that state that you are accepting grace, you can feel it; you understand it at a higher level. You know that there are shifts happening, but yet on your outside life, things don’t seem to be matching up to what we have just received or what we know. And pregnancy is about that period of time when we have to go through that dark night of having patience and waiting, which is an important spiritual practice. Then after the pregnancy comes the journey. And the journey is about when things start to happen in the outside world, when our intuition becomes expressed. We start to see it through synchronicity. We feel like we are led, and not in a logical way necessarily. We are led in a way that is intuitive—that internal grace or that feeling. And a lot of it is about trusting and learning to be in the world in a different way, about paying attention to “Where am I being led?” and then following up with that, with some form of affirmation and commitment. Going from the internal into the external. I think the journey can actually be kind of an exciting stage, when things start to wake up and the perception of the world starts to reorient itself and we are able to see the connections that we couldn’t see before, even though they don’t make sense. But there is something in us that gets really excited about it. Synchronicity can be amazing, the little things that can make our day. So it’s about noticing the miracles, and noticing what a miracle really is and having gratitude for that. And expecting that and knowing that that’s just the way life is really meant to be lived, that miracles are just part of living in that divine feminine energy where it’s like the earth is always sprouting. There is always a miracle—a plant that’s growing, a flower, and a bird. There is always that birth. What comes into our life is not from the human, “I made this happen.” It’s from the spiritual, divine, “I’m part of a greater process, and it’s happening through me and this manifestation.” It comes from that pure place. So it doesn’t really matter what it is, because it comes with that essence of divine connection. And that’s what really makes us happy. Ascension is about Mary’s ascension into the spirit from the physical. And the ascension for us, as you know, is about all of us living in a higher vibration. My feeling is that we are ascending, and that the divine feminine, through Mary in part, is coming to help us to move into our spiritual body more. When this happens on Mary’s path, a healing potential comes out, and much more of our intuitive abilities. We start to live in a higher sense of service to the world. We are able to heal on a bigger scale. VM: I love the fact that, I think it was in chapter five or six, you ask people to keep a dream journal. And I’ve kept a dream journal since I was 15. I’m curious, what do dreams mean to you in your life? SD: I remember getting so frustrated—and this was a long time ago— about dream interpretation, because I always felt like somebody is really talking to me in my dreams. I think there are a lot of different levels. Some dreams are definitely just unconscious material. Well, not just, but
unconscious stuff coming out, working stuff out. But then I’ve felt dreams where there are really visitations or connections and a lot of learning happening. VM: I think it’s kind of when you get those déjà vu “aha” moments. I tell people, I think you know the difference between a dream that’s kind of throwing off psychic, mental energy and processing it, versus the ones that you feel in your heart chakra or your solar plexus. There’s a different knowing. And I just ask them, “What was your dominant emotion during the dream?” SD: There are certain tribes (indigenous tribes) that believe that nothing can actually happen in the physical unless you dream it first. Actually doing what we are doing right now is just wonderful for me, in terms of just looking at different magazines. The whole process with this has been kind of magical for me, and just like you said, being attentive, knowing it’s there, receiving it, training our minds to shift out of pushing and into receiving. I think that it is wondrous. VM: Our theme this month is Personal Journeys. Where are you at in your personal journey in this lifetime? SD: This is not the book; it’s me right now. It’s been a really long journey for me. It’s about living like I never thought I would live, in terms of being really invited to be in the absolute now, without a lot of the security that I thought I would have, that I thought I needed. I feel like I’m living really vulnerably right now. I never saw myself as wanting to live like this, but this is what’s happening. And [I am] accepting it and just letting myself feel that vulnerability even though I want to run from it and protect myself and just not be that person. That’s where I am, though. And just seeing, every day, the emotional, sometimes rawness and wonder of that—being present to that. VM: I just think of some of your words, and then Mary. It just shifts everything. I don’t think I’ve ever had a book do that. I just think of Mary and it’s like, boom, my whole energy shifts. SD: And Mary, her energy is so close right now. Her vibration is just pulling us all into a higher ascension. She is pulling us into life. The gates are more open; things are prime right now. That’s why I tell people about the book. It’s not so much about me thinking I want to make money with it. But it’s about the vibrational shift. It’s really about the shift that we need. That’s really where my happiness comes, is when I see animals that are living in their beautiful environment and they’re not suffering, and birds that are flying, all of life. One Night iN the Favela by Daphne Carpenter
A
bout three years ago I found myself slightly obsessed with Brazil and Brazilian culture. For a period of about two years, I would travel back and forth from California to that incredible land, which somehow has a way of allowing one to forget about their troubles. To save money, I would work and work and spend my cash only on life’s necessities. Getting (back) to Brazil became the central focus of my life. And with all the time I spent there, I went through a metamorphosis. My entire demeanor changed. I would smile like a Brazilian, act like a care-free Brazilian, make decisions the way a Brazilian might. Inspired by the styles of mulata women, my wardrobe became infused with bright colors (a lot more yellows and greens than I had worn before). My jeans became tighter, more low-cut on the hips. And with my luscious, nothing-better-to-do-but-lay-in-the-sun-all-day tan, I found myself exposing way more skin. And the size of my bikinis? You could only imagine the down-size. I felt at home in Brazil, and I usually felt safe. Then one night, something happened that really freaked me out.
“Pulse, pulse, pulse, my heart went into overdrive.” I was staying with friends in Tabajaras—a favela in the hills above Copacabana—and was on my way home from the beach in Leblon. It was around 9 p.m. Dazed by an overdose of sun and surf that day, I walked up the usual gargantuan set of steps towards the pad, and unintentionally turned left at the top of the stairs instead of right. I ended up in an unfamiliar section of the neighborhood and walked past a tiny outdoor bar that I hadn’t seen before. Six men were sitting at plastic white tables, drinking beer. Caught off guard and surprised by my sudden appearance there, they looked at me and temporarily paused their conversation. Then a midget approached me. He was probably about 32 years old. He was accosting me as if I were a prostitute. He said something about going with him, and “How much?” He came up to me really closely and was aggressive in his approach. He was very confident and sure of himself and acted like he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I gave him a look that said, “Yeah right, dude.” No thanks. I’m just looking for my friends. Tchau. I turned around and started to walk back the same way I’d come from, this time more quickly. Then, 20 seconds later, I heard someone shouting abrasively in my direction. I looked back, thinking it was that annoying midget. But instead, I saw a barefooted young man (about 23 years old) dressed in black shorts and a dirty grey sweatshirt, and he had a gun dangling from his right hand. He was running right towards me. I froze. Pulse, pulse, pulse, my heart went into overdrive. Multilayered thoughts began to flood my head. Then

I took a deep breath, the deepest ever. But I swallowed it, and now there was no calm air in any of my cells. Okay. So the guy with the gun probably just wants to know who I am (I hoped) and what I’m doing in this section of the neighborhood. Yeah, that’s it. So I’ll just stop right here, nice and calm, and wait for him to catch up. Then I’ll talk my way out of it with a friendly attitude. Get a grip, I told myself—be cool. (Although the situation was alarming, after spending a significant amount of time in the favela, it wasn’t actually that shocking. As Tyler Fainstat, Head of Mission for MSF in Brazil, told the BBC, “You have a complete absence of the state [in the favela], and at a certain point things which are shocking become normal.”) I plastered a stupid fake smile across my face, but now he was holding the gun right up in front of him. So this could be it, I thought. What a horrible way to die, at the hands of some crazy, maybe drugged-out youngster who has no regard for my life. My family will never recover. But then, as the guy drew nearer, it became evident that he was now making little notice of me, as if he forgot about me in mid-thought, in mid-run. Instead, he just passed right by me within a range of three feet, and exchanged friendly words with a couple sitting on the curb. They started laughing as if they were close friends. The gun slinging youngster never stopped running, though. He just turned and ran down a smaller set of steps (ones I had to move through as well) and into the darkness. It took me a few long moments to move. Down those stairs was my only way out of this forsaken place, and I dreaded running into him there. Not yet ready to make my move, I just stood there, frozen at the top of the stairs, uneasily trying to decide what to do. Then ten minutes later, just as I had finally mustered up enough courage to make my descent and head home, I saw movement in the shadows below. He was running back up the stairs, seemingly more crazy and agitated than before. What the f***? At this point I was desperately annoyed by this guy, wishing he would just drop off the planet or at least lose that gun. He was a major obstacle in my path to happiness—get home, take a shower, make myself a big bowl of spaghetti, and then finally fall asleep in my top-bunk bed. To avoid him, I turned to my right and went quickly into a small Internet place, where I invented some random dumb conversation with the owner (“Do you know where so-and-so lives? She’s my friend, and I’m kind of lost…duh…”). When the guy with the gun finally reached the top of the stairs (166 in all), he turned in the direction he had originally come from and disappeared. I wasted no time; I bolted down the steps and jogged the rest of the way home, as if I had just been out exercising. I ate my spaghetti, climbed into bed, and murmured to myself, “Holy shit!” I never told anybody about what had happened.

earest fellow followers of the New Age, While we are all plainly excited for the big two-one when the Earth comes of drinking age and can imbibe the higher spirits— and out in the open—we must remember, as they say, that 2012 is already here. The Earth is already 21. I recently saw this excuse unfold at an underage drinking party I was attending. The girl, with beautiful bronze peace earrings bouncing on her lobes and a t-shirt with the words “5th Dimension or Bust” stretched across her chest, was adamantly telling the officer that, contrary to her ID, she was already actually 21. The officer smiled as he pulled her into his car and told her that, contrary to where she’ll spend the night, she is already actually out of jail. I smiled behind my plastic cup. I think during all these preparations for 2012, it is sane to step back as we wrap up all our GoodOnYa bars for our basement or bury our Kombucha kegs in our backyard, and remember that 2012 is also decidedly not here. However, today is here, and that is good and enough.

Like a demented dog, I first started chasing after the bumper of 2012 when I was provoked by astrology reports on the urgency of manifesting our purpose, or psychic predictions on emanating true love, or just the general need to get our metaphysical asses into high enlightenment or else the Earth will upchuck us out of our solar system, further than abandoned Pluto. I felt like a small child who, showing an affinity for the violin, is told that he for certain better be playing all of Dvorak’s New World Symphony on his four strings by the year’s end. Or bust. As I kept chasing with tighter paws down narrower streets, I seemed to keep failing as the car went faster and higher. I was unable to forgive myself, and finally, one day, as I was terrorizing my body, soul, and amygdala with worry and stress over what to do and what I hadn’t done, I lay open and weak, and a little streak of harsh anger struck me in the back of my skull. I couldn’t kick it. It’s ironic what we do to ourselves when we put ideals over ourselves, even the ideal of love.
VISION CAFE Anodea Judith writes in her awesome tome, “Eastern Body, Western Mind,” how the five personality types of bioenergetic therapy (a body psychotherapy developed by Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen, which focused on childhood patterns energetically held in the body) who also have corresponding chakric developments. One of these types, the oral character, has a seventh chakra that may be deficient, and his “spirituality may mirror the parent-child relationship (i.e., infantile), [in that he] wants to get taken care of” (139). My spiritual insights were funneled right into the vulnerable parts of my personality structure, still cognizant of authority and rule. Gratitude and forgiveness were precisely the ingredients unmixed in that cauldron of my childhood; forgiveness came in small and sifted and only, if it was, in the end, the right thing to do. Gratitude was unknown. Childhood was a semi-terror. Just as my parents had never allowed me to be in the state of development I was in, I too had committed the same crimes in the name of spirituality. However, this is not how to raise a soul. Iah Ka Onge-Jah, a shaman I visited in Temecula, explained to me that just as each chakra is like an inner child to the one above it, we ourselves are like inner children to our higher selves. Our higher selves are well versed in harmony and know that we, as we are, are okay and can stand on our own two legs. Things can always be worse and always be better, but then again, they can’t be worse nor better but can only be exactly as they are, and thus a reasonable response is an open hand. So, I am in the process of un-gloving myself from myself. In a fit of frustration and disbelief at how my life could get even tighter and stickier when I seemed to be becoming more involved in the New Age Movement, I went back to some intuitions about spirituality I had set aside until after, of course, I had figured it all out. Since I do think something is amiss in how the New Age goes about doing their teachings—or in what they teach—I’d like to present some of my own inclinations, humbly, if not for my own sake; maybe they might help someone else out. THE NUMBER ONE best way to not lose yourself in spirituality: Every Buddhist I have ever met has told me that if I see the Buddha on the road, to kill him. Don’t believe in anything you don’t know experientially for yourself to be true. Yes, we might have souls, spirits, karmas, personalities, animal guides, angels, dead family members, ascended masters, Atlanteans, star folk, auras, astral bodies, etheric bodies, sexy bodies, elliptical astrological bodies—but
reality is still all one and nothing. Reality is okay with the ego where the ego is. Only the ego is not okay with the ego. (Consciousness loves and accepts you just as you are.) So, following intuitions, images, thoughts, and messages from the 4th dimension or your burly subconscious is still following your reality; it’s not reality. You can let them go if you want. Know also that 2012 is not outside of us. We are the Mayan prediction, and the dream is within us and it happens as fast or as slowly as we go. Time is still infinitely abundant. And if energy is never lost or gained, who isn’t around during 2012? I’ve also noticed that there is this veneer of perfectionism to the New Age Movement. But perfectionism is a lie and makes for unintegrated people. The need to be perfect for 2012 belies a stronger fear of being unaccepted. Yet profound growth and humility come from accepting ourselves as we are. And it is not a coincidence that groups of people in history who have been unaccepted, abandoned, and disdained have also felt they are the chosen ones. Why do we feel like we are the chosen ones? Finally, I’ve come to realize, you are even bigger than your soul. I hope not to fear who I am now, or strive away from myself, just because the future holds a different me. Transformation comes when the caterpillar, bruised, blown, brown, and beautiful, enters the cocoon as she is, with all her peace earrings, not quite 21. HOLISTIC BUSINESS
The Things That Stand in Your Way Are the Exact Things That Will Set You Free by Sigal Zoldan

ll of us are walking on a path in life. Like on any path, we may find ourselves bumping into challenges as well as moments of bliss. We aspire to have more joy than suffering and we realize how much practice it takes to get ourselves back to balance, to find peace, be grateful, and appreciate what we have. We all have been there, through periods of suffering, either emotional, physical, or spiritual. I have come to ask myself, “Why?” I know I am not the first one to ask this question, yet I am asking it from a very specific angle. A few days after Thanksgiving of 2010, I felt a nagging itch below my left eye. It felt like I had come in contact with some rash-inducing plant. The next morning I found myself looking in the mirror and not recognizing the face that was reflected back to me. During the night, my face had become swollen, particularly in the area around my eyes. I didn’t know where to turn, what to do, or even what it was. He sent me home with a prescription for Medrol Dosepak (a type of steroid), which messed up my sleep and my concentration, though it slowly brought the swelling down. I thought I was good until two days after I stopped taking the medication, when the reaction started all over again. When I finally got an appointment with my holistic doctor, I learned that

I had developed a sudden allergic reaction to tomatoes, peppers, and—the worst of all—my cats. I had never had allergies before, so why now? For about three months, I had seven cycles of these reactions. I ended up with wrinkles around my eyes, and my skin became very dry and sensitive. I didn’t dine out because I couldn’t trust that the knife that cut the greens hadn’t previously touched a tomato or pepper. I also had to move out of my home for a while because I didn’t want to have a reaction to my cats. When I asked my holistic doctor why Sigal Zoldan this was happening, his answer was that the underlying cause was Candida. I have had a relationship with Candida since 1996, but never something like this outburst. With nutrition supplements, Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET), sound waves, and energy work, we started to get my body back into balance. It was a slow process, and there was some progress, but the suffering didn’t stop. After three months, I surrendered and took an overthe-counter allergy medication that caused my menstrual cycle to be irregular. (I didn’t like that.) I was free of a reaction for about two months. I still avoided tomatoes and peppers, but I went back home with my cats. I reduced the allergy medication and one evening it started all over again. Finding myself back at my doctor’s office, I asked again, “Why!?” My doctor said that, in general, people’s DNA is no longer responding the same to previously effective treatments. But, he said, there are solutions. I know, more supplements, better diet. All that is great and important, but why am I going through this experience?
This was a turning point for me. This is when I realized, once and for all, that it was time to take responsibility for my own healing. I knew that I must claim my healing, ask for it, demand it, and I knew that it would come. Four days prior to the last allergic reaction, I participated in a fabulous one-day workshop of Forensic Healing with Marisa Russo. I liked it, enjoyed it, but didn’t think to take it further because I wasn’t looking to add another modality to my tool box. People came in with pain and left without it. Since I was not in pain that day, I experienced it more on an energetic level than a physical one. And then, as I was lying down at my doctor’s office feeling helpless, it hit me: “This is it, this is it!” The voice in the back of my mind kept saying“The answer is already here; it’s Forensic Healing. This is what you need to do.” So I did. I undertook the whole training and became one of the first eight Forensic Healers in the United States. I wanted results faster and deeper. I wanted to understand both where my problem originated as well as what I could do to heal and prevent it.And I wanted it as fast as humanly possible, and using natural methods. For me that means minutes, hours, or maybe a couple of days, not months or years of work, supplements, diets, and hundreds of dollars basically going down the drain. The beauty of Forensic Healing is that it covers all of the above. In one session, one can uncover things that have been locked in his or her system for lifetimes. The way it works is by investigating and revealing the source of the issue we are working on (through muscle testing), collecting all the details that lead to the symptom, which could be anything from the lack of a relationship to financial challenges, to health challenges, to anything one feels is keeping him or her stuck or suffering. We also discover the point in time when this block became locked in one’s system, and we then do the appropriate healing. I have over 130 healing modalities that I incorporate based on the need to bring the person back into alignment. In addition to a strong immune system, we also need balanced and healthy DNA. The Forensic Healing gets all the way down to this level. When we have the understandings, the lessons, the release, the healing, and what we have to do next, we have the power to bring our DNA back into alignment and therefore our life back onto a fulfilling, healthy, peaceful, and joyous track. Today I enjoy eating tomatoes and peppers and hugging and petting my cats, and my face and skin look great (without any treatments). I enjoy sharing the magic of Forensic Healing at every opportunity, especially in my work with clients. this help alleviate digestive symptoms, but it will also calm inflammation and reduce cortisol so that you can sleep more easily. Food Intolerances Another factor that raises stress hormones and robs you of sleep is a food intolerance. This not only raises stress hormones, but it also creates inflammation and an environment that fosters bacterial and fungal infections. An anti-inflammatory diet eliminating foods that commonly cause intolerances (gluten, dairy, egg, soy, grains, and nuts) and a gut-healing protocol can pave the path to better sleep by reducing inflammation and stress hormone levels. After following this diet for a few weeks to a few months you may find that it is okay to reintroduce some of these foods to your diet. Dr. J. Simply put, not knowing exactly what will happen next in our lives is okay. In fact, it is actually liberating. The ability to let go, not know and not try to totally control what will happen next is a key skill and a sign of mental health. We need to learn to embrace uncertainty. We set our intentions without tying ourselves to outcomes, and we then trust in the divine forces which are certainly present. As for the gentleman with agoraphobia mentioned earlier, he eventually ventured out his front door, at first, for just brief moments. A pterodactyl did not swoop down and get him. The mental chatter expressing fear of uncertainty gradually subsided. He learned to listen to his heart which told him he was safe to go outside despite uncertainties, and that life is full of uncertainties which we can’t let imprison us or stop us from being who we are. He left his old life inside, and each time he went outside, he went farther and farther. I’d interact with a rogue’s gallery of characters, the most compelling of whom was the bearded lady who went by the name of Stan when he/she wasn’t ensconced in his/her patchwork tent on display for all to marvel at. But alas, none of that happened. Though the offer was made by the proprietor of the enchanted quadrupeds, there was no agreement, no magic. No incantation was going to result in my Father allowing me to join the caravan for the summer. But that’s beside the point. Sitting here, writing, spinning fictive yarn with random threads of fact has been a journey unto itself, one I wish I’d been able to make as a kid. Though my tilt-a-whirl dreams never left home, what matters is that I can journey now whenever I want to. And that hopefully my trek can inspire yours. That strikes me as fair enough.
Bad Bacteria in Your Gut Can Affect Sleep Our gut houses ample beneficial bacteria, which aid in digestion and many other functions. Unfortunately, poor diets, stress, and other modern lifestyle factors can tip the balance so that the gut becomes infected with an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and fungus. Bacterial and fungal infections produce chemicals that aggravate the immune system and nervous system, triggering the release of the stress hormone, cortisol. High levels of cortisol interfere with your ability to fall asleep or sleep soundly. Using both stool and saliva tests, we can identify the type of gut infection you have and how it’s affecting your stress hormone levels, and then use a combination of botanical compound and dietary approaches to restore balance. “Healer Heal Thy Self” continued from page 23
God. This is the true essence of healing. It is from this state of consciousness that the healer heals itself. The purification of the self, in turn, purifies and expands one’s gifts as a healer. With this new model in place, not only would you no longer be adversely affected as a result of healing others, but you would become uplifted and exalted by doing so. Moreover, the healer’s own aches and pains will very often start to disappear as a result of tending to clients, for that same love which is flowing through you will also be blessing you while it is blessing your client. Even the healer’s need for food and sleep will in some cases diminish. The healer would find his or her mood swings becoming shorter in duration and intensity. More and more joy would be experienced because that light of God would be flowing through, unhindered, as it was being allowed to do its deed. In this way, love’s effect on the healer would be very positive. The healer’s consciousness would now be one with it and no longer be monitoring it, controlling it, or trying to do something about it. It knows what to do. It found you, did it not? The minute the gaze falls onto one’s separate existence, a life-sustaining, energetic cord is cut and one spins in a downward spiral into the depths of illusion. Again, it is all about perception—very different from avoidance and denial, which many practice. While you are dealing with, and growing through, your circumstance, the gaze must not fall. This was the great metaphor that Jesus delivered to his brother Simon Peter upon the Sea of Galilee. He helped him to define the illusion. The moment Peter looked down to the sea upon which they stood (the illusion), fear rushed in and he began to sink. Jesus then said to him, “Lift your gaze. Look back into My eyes and do not take them from Me.” It was in doing so that he rose again to walk on water with his brother Jesus, thus transcending the illusion. It is always and only when your gaze is transfixed on love that you can be in the world, but not of it, and thus be no longer affected by its illusions, no matter how real they might appear. ©1999, 2008 Louix Dor Dempriey Foundation. And we still seek education and understanding because these things are important to our people. Without knowledge, there is no understanding. So we do get formal education, letters before and after our names, but that’s recognition by your American culture. Within the Native American culture, your recognition comes from those you serve. In my journey, my own personal experience has led me to do things in a way that people show respect towards me, come to me for help. So I know I’ve done the right thing. VM: The world today is constantly in a state of flux. What message can you provide to bring peace to the billions of people on our planet? RW: The first thing I can say is, the world as it is today is not the way it was meant to be. And as long as we continue to work towards creating the world as it should be, there is always hope that it will be. Like any person in addiction. They have to hit an emotional bottom before they are willing to reach out and ask for help. And human beings as a whole, around the world, from my perspective, have not yet quite reached that emotional bottom. But when they do, then the world will change. VM: What can one person do every day to try to reach that harmony? RW: The first thing you can do is start your day by taking some tobacco and going outside or standing on the patio, balcony, whatever you’ve got. Face the east with some tobacco in your hand, and start your day centering on Creator. Offer up prayer on behalf of those who are in need. As we give of ourself in prayer in that way, we open ourselves up to the flow of Spirit through us. And it gives Creator an opportunity to use us, despite ourselves, to help improve the quality of life for all people. It starts with each person focusing on Creator first, thinking about, I’ve got this neighbor who’s in trouble, I’ve got this friend who’s going through this health condition, women and children halfway around the world being murdered because they want freedom and justice, so I need to throw my voice in on this. And putting our voice out there works, it helps. And as we as individuals also seek to grow and evolve, that presence of Spirit within us influences the people around us, has an impact on them, and it has a chain reaction. It’s like that hundredth monkey thing. As we think about things, other people around us think about those things, too. Running Wolf will be leading the Spirit Balancing Workshop and Ganvnowa Ceremony in North Park, San Diego on Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (He will be available for one-on-one time during the week following the workshop.) Artist, Adam Fraser
Interstellar Dawn-Patrol, a song for the pioneers of interstellar surfing, by Adam Fraser
When I snapped a photo of two surfers suiting up on the beach, it looked to me as though they were astronauts suiting up for flight, adrenaline pumping through their bodies in anticipation of what lies before them. The same feeling was coming over me because I had found a story to tell. To a surfer, riding a wave can feel like a truly celestial experience. One wave and you’re floating weightlessly, teetering on the brink of orbit. Another and you’re being swallowed by a black hole and getting spit out at the speed of light. It’s this range of feelings that I want to convey, and I’m striving to find a way to do it differently than the other surf photographers out there. Finally, a huge thanks to NASA for the mind-bendingly beautiful images of the cosmos that provided me the setting for these images. Adam is an artist, designer, and software engineer hailing from the north shore of Massachusetts. Find his work at afaceinacloud.com

It’s what keeps me going and keeps me inspired. It’s just incredible. Before we had children, everybody could tell you everything about what it’s like to have kids, but when you finally do, it’s like a whole different thing. I think those are the two things that probably keep me going. VM: I know you’re touring in California. Where are your shows? DF: We’re doing two shows near you in San Diego (two nights at the Belly Up in Solana Beach) and at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. Then we head up to San Francisco, to The Independent in San Francisco, then one in San Luis Obispo. We do one in Arizona. And then we go to the East Coast, and we come back to the West Coast and do this KROQ thing on Catalina; I want to say that’s in August. When a record comes out, we usually start touring for a year and a half. For Donavon Frankenreiter, the essence of Start Livin’ is most fully captured in its album-opening title track. Accented by handclaps and stick-in-your-head harmonies, “Start Livin’” is a feel-good, uptempo call to “celebrate tonight.” “To me the most beautiful thing about this record is it really reflects who I am today,” says Frankenreiter. “Start Livin’ means stop worrying about where you’ve been, where you’re going—just start embracing what you have around you. Start loving what you have right now.” For more information about Donavon or show times in your area, visit http://www. donavonf.com.
