Beyond Cyberspace: Seeking Oneness in a Hi Tech World by Elyssa Paige
F
lashback—I am a child curled up on the couch in fright and delight, watching a film I was probably too young to see: The Terminator. Years later, I revisit the film with matured eyes, recognizing killer humanoid robots as symbols of technology that became so powerful as to threaten existence as we know it. Who ever thought that an action flick could have such intense moral implications? My generation was quirky in its hi tech transition; I used typewriters in high school and crossed over to a PC in college (a Pentium One—how’s that for archaic?) It was the 90s, the Internet boomed overnight, and the world was at our fingertips— anywhere, anytime. Amazon.com hit the scene as the first big online shopping site and Mapquest.com provided effortless directions to anywhere. Communication entered warp speed; cell phones went from clunky oversized emblems of wealth to lightweight flip-top toys of the masses. In this new digitized age, worldwide communication was as simple as the push of a button or the click of a mouse—but not without a cost. For example, our cell phones and computers are made from a rare mineral known as coltan. This precious ore quickly became the object of illegal mining operations; in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has been gathered through abusive means such as rape and slave labor. There are also health consequences to our hi tech world. Cell phones emit electromagnetic fields, or EMFs for short. Studies have shown that EMFs may alter brainwaves, have dangerous effects on tissues and cells, and can cause cancer. Countries in Europe have recognized this health hazard, introducing legislation to discourage cell phone use among children. Conversely in 2006 in the United States, Sprint signed a $2 billion contract with Disney to market cell phones to
“tweeners,” a term coined to identify the target market of children between the ages of eight and 12. Don’t get me wrong; I too love having a cell phone to call or text anyone at anytime and a laptop on which to create this article. But is there not some sort of balance that we can strike? The solutions are out there. Special headsets block EMFs from passing from your cell phone to your body. Companies like Nokia have shown corporate responsibility, adhering to self-imposed environmental and social regulations pertaining to the mining of coltan for their products. And we can recycle those used electronics when the next fad lures us in to make life faster, easier and more
expedient. Convenience is an undeniable advantage to our hi tech society. Do you want to go back to washing your clothes by hand, pumping your own water or sending telegrams? I don’t. But perhaps an examination of our priorities is in order with all of this time we’ve seemingly created for ourselves. Look around; ironically, people seem busier than ever. What’s more, the effects of technology on our interpersonal relationships are palpable. We build information superhighways and global bridges of communication that simultaneously seem to isolate us. Do you stop to talk to your neighbors these days? How paradoxical it is that we can instantaneously blast a message to thousands, if not millions of people, but often don’t even know the people living on our streets. We’ve all seen oblivious passersby completely zoned into their iPods, children who would rather play video games than go outside to play, YouTube addicts, and on and on. Our hi tech forms of entertainment are considered unparalleled in quality and availability, but again, at what cost? How much time do we “spend” appreciating the beauty and serenity of nature, sharing a meal with family and loved ones, or in quiet meditation, compared to texting, tweeting, and meeting people on MySpace and Facebook? It all boils down to the choices we make. Everything we say and do and every word we utter has an impact that spreads far and wide. As we log-in and become part of global networks, let us create the same concept of community every day— at our jobs, at the grocery store, or even on the freeway when someone cuts us off. Let us focus our technological prowess on communal good, rather than individual convenience and profit. Slowly but surely we are moving in this direction—think solar panels, LEDs, and hybrid vehicles. More and more, we are beginning to recognize each other as a human family sharing the gift of this amazing planet. With all of our technological capacities, it’s high time that we stepped it up to get smarter and more efficient at serving the whole. It’s a matter of widening our scope beyond our own noses, beyond our backyards, our cities, our nations, our planet—all the way back until the sun, 109 times larger than Earth, is but a speck in the cosmos, and farther back until the Milky Way is a grain of sand. With this widened perspective, it’s easy to see us all connected as one—beyond cyberspace.

espected biogeneticists Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. Candace Pert and others have recently found themselves unlikely presenters on the spiritual speakers circuit. New Thought practitioners are eager to learn how miracles of science are outdoing miracles of the church. Even in light of the fact that bioengineering is credited with our “Frankenfood” supply and its ensuing pharmaceutical remedies, New Thought audiences around the globe are embracing the unity of thought derived from the emerging science: We are more than our bodies. Chi, life force, vibrational frequencies, and the mind-body connection all describe how our consciousness creates our physical experience. Science and spirituality are coming to the consensus that body cells are in a continuous energetic flow of communication from conception to death. Only within the last century have we begun to recognize how our internal and external physical environments interact. Today, it’s commonly concluded that genes, environment and attitude equally impact our physical state. Epigenetics, a long-awaited paradigm shift in the biomedical sciences introduced by Bruce Lipton, PhD, avers that we are more than a biochemical machine controlled by genes. Though the genetic structure of the helix is a popular symbol in today’s culture, few people realize the tenuous relationship between genes (made up of proteins) and DNA (our reproductive coding) represented by it. Chromosomes contain 50 percent DNA and 50 percent proteins, and together they create the double helix. New research reveals that there is no such thing as an “on/off” function for a gene because genes are blueprints (plans) to make proteins, which are the building blocks that give shape to the structure. In other words, according to psychopharmacologist and leading-edge researcher, Dr. Candace Pert, it is in fact, our thoughts and choices about how we feel, live and eat that has the greatest impact on how cells are formed in the body (i.e. producing healthful balance or diseased toxicity). Best known for her opiate receptor, endorphin and peptide research, Dr. Candace Pert teaches us the science of reprogramming our body-mind connection to experience optimal health and vitality. In New Science, the miracle is that medicine has finally caught up with the notion that our environment includes our internal one. This vibrational field, or vital force we call life can exist without the brain but not without the mind; cells can live without nuclei, but not without the soul’s life force. A renaissance in cell biology now provides the cutting edge New Science that proves how holistic health therapies work. Used throughout human existence, holistic health therapies are based on the ancient wisdom that states for better or V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

worse, human or plant, cells change with environment. Being more than our bodies is about understanding the unity of medicine and miracles that exists within the vastness of the soul environment expressed by the body. Miracles are a result of a change of perspective: New Thought. Indeed all healing is as divine as we are. More than a superficial appeal to a creator outside of ourselves, New Thought changes the channel and transcends the cause of sickness: the illusion of separation. There is no separation between science and spirituality. The recent swine flu scare ebbs and flows as perceived by human beings, just as AIDS, TB, and Bubonic plague did in past centuries. Our collective cellular consciousness is measured on a universal radar screen and our physical condition is created, then read back to us as such. Author and diarist Anaïs Nin once said, “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Beyond all appearances of health, remember the body-mind is free to energetically create and recreate its inner world boundlessly. This is the miracle. Tammy Taylor hosts “Our Greatest Hour” Radio Show, dubbed the best source for New Thought talk in Tampa Bay, FL and beyond. Her weekly articles appear on www. Examiner.com. Alphabiotics:
Instant and Long-Term Stress Relief
Tiger Woods and the Members of Green Day Are Doing It and So Can You by Lynn O’Neill
T
here are myriad ways to mitigate the effects of stress in our lives, from acupuncture and massage to hypnosis, meditation and deep breathing. While all of these healing and relaxation modalities are important, there is another, more fundamental approach that may supersede all of them. It’s called Alphabiotics. In a nutshell, Alphabiotics is a breakthrough in stress relief via the “alpha state” of electromagnetic brainwave frequencies. What Alphabiotics does effectively and gently is to “reboot” your brain so that both hemispheres are balanced, which in turn balances energies in the nerves and muscles, and instantly releases stress held in the mind, brain and body. Sound painful? Sound like science fiction? Fear not. It’s a soothing yet simple process after which you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. First, a disclosure and a little background on Alphabioticist, Stephen “Dr. Steve” Rainbolt, founder of the Alphabiotic Center of San Diego. Steve and I have been friends for a long time. Not only was I his trusty dog- and chickensitter (R.I.P., sweet pups, Aubrey and Rose) but off and on, over the years, I have received various healing treatments from him—mainly for my chronic knee injuries, which, knock on wood, now seem to be a problem of the past. Dr. Steve started out with a degree in electrical engineering and had a successful career working on naval ships while he began a second career in acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy and Alphabiotics. The melding of science and healing comes naturally to him. What I have always loved about my friend is his passion for helping and empowering people, yet I have been duly impressed with his “regular guy”
approach. Recently while sitting in his waiting area (the arches of my grateful feet on a foot massager), I was struck by how diverse his regular patients are: from building contractors and business people, to retirees, tattooed surfers and moms. I thought to myself: This is the Steve I know: people from all walks of life relate to him and trust him. Alphabiotics and Stress, Explained The concept is simple. Alphabiotics is the balancing of the left and the right brain. Studies show that most of us—85 percent— lock into the dominant hemisphere of our brains—usually the left side—due to stress. The sub-dominant side then becomes passive and weak, while the other side stays chronically tensed. When we’re under stress, we’re in a “fight or flight” response which can be high in emotional content and/or pain. The average person can spend most of his/her life in that state, thus making the body sick and hastening the aging process. Negative thoughts add to this weakened state. Incidentally, by the age of five, many of us are already living lives in chronic negative thought patterns. Your cells then “hear” this, since there is consciousness and awareness in every cell. Positive thoughts can help, but only temporarily. photo by Gabriella Fabbri This alarm system worked great for our forebears—running from a sabertooth tiger did have its benefits—but that constant stress is a major killer now. Alphabiotics helps you to come out of that stress state and into whole brain function. Understanding Electromagnetic Brainwave Frequencies To better understand Alphabiotics, here’s an easy lesson on how our brainwaves work (beta, alpha, theta and delta) and how they affect the body. The highest frequency is beta, a defensive state of high ego activity. A person engaged in a debate or heated conversation would be in a beta state. Alpha is next, which is like your car idling. It’s the calm, relaxed state. There

is little to no mind chatter. Healing of all kinds and cell regeneration can occur when these brainwaves are predominant. Theta involves intuition, lucid dreaming and hypnotic states. Deep meditation can get you there. Delta is deep sleep and dreams. The body heals optimally in this state. Many, if not most of us, reside in beta, although all the brainwave states can be present in differing degrees. When beta predominates and is not balanced by the presence of alpha in the spectrum, we become depleted physically. This chronic tension is cumulative over the years and our bodies can begin to break down. The Alphabiotics Process At the Alphabiotics Center, the ambience will probably pull you in first. You enter what is similar to a community-style acupuncture room—an oasis of subdued lighting, trickling fountain and soft music. These calming elements help you to stay in the moment so that you can begin the process of moving into an alpha state. As you lie on your back, your ankles are placed in a chi-machine, for 15 minutes or so, which is a passive aerobic exerciser. Moving the chi (energy) around your body provides detoxification, oxygenation and spine alignment. The back of your head is then cradled with Dr. Steve’s assured hands and confident touch and an upward movement is quickly applied on each side. (You can also request a gentler movement.) This causes a high level sensory input into the brain. You then wiggle your feet and take a few deep breaths—this continues to switch you from the dominant hemisphere to the sub-dominant. A successful Alphabiotic Alignment/Unification is akin to reaching an alpha state via yogic breath (which can take much longer: 20-30 minutes). Many yogis cannot maintain their alpha state however, just through breath alone. Immediately after the process, you may experience a lightness; colors seem brighter and your body feels lengthened as if from stretching. You are now moving toward your natural potential as a “whole” person, meaning your brain is working the way it was designed to. Your first alignment is a test to see how well and how long you can hold. You can expect to maintain this proper condition for about 72 to 75 hours, even if you have been in a stressed state for many years. It is important to know how well and how long you can maintain. This determines how often you need to experience the process. Eventually, you will need fewer treatments as you begin to reach your natural unstressed state. And because Dr. Steve believes in a multi-faceted approach, there is more to follow. The “thumper” comes next which is a percussion massager that drives massage energy deep into the muscle tissue of your back. The thumper was applied by both Dr. Steve and Barie, his office assistant and co-healer. Next, I received acupuncture and cupping to further the movement of chi through my body. Cupping is done with suction cups to break up energy stagnation. It is painless. After the cupping, heat packs were applied to my body which felt wonderful as

Ask the LifeQuake™ Doctor Dr. Toni Galardi
S
ummer is almost over and the season of change is about to begin—autumn. I love this time of year. Like the leaves that turn color as they begin to die, letting go of old defunct habits and/or life circumstances can have the same effect. As we recognize that a cycle is ending, we can bring color back to our lives in places that might have grown stale. Dear Dr. Toni: I am a very healthy 54-year-old businessman. I exercise, eat a healthy diet, am not overweight, etc. I am financially successful and from the outside, everything looks “right;” I am envied by many people and I do a lot to project and protect my image. I went through a divorce a year ago and I spend a lot of mental time in the past, thinking about how it used to be. I am currently taking Paxil, trying homeopathy, doing energy psychology and seeing an herbal MD who is giving me teas to take. I am still suffering and nothing seems to help. Do you have any other ideas or am I destined to this life forever? Any insight at all would be much appreciated. Jonathan in San Diego Dear Jonathan: I can appreciate how difficult and frustrated you must be, given that you are doing “all the right things.” There are two things you mention that bear addressing: “I spend a lot of mental time in the past” and “I do a lot to project and protect my
image.” How comfortable are you with vulnerability? Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Paxil for depression, do take you out of the depths of despair. But now, actually sitting with your feelings in the present, and not in the past, can allow you to be more authentic and less prone to protecting your image. Do you let people get close? Part of intimacy is rooted in showing your humanity, warts and all. If you are looking back a lot, perhaps you are filled with regret about your choices while you were married. I would encourage you to find a good psychotherapist to work with and to do an evaluation with an orthomolecular psychiatrist—a physician who is trained in treating mood disorders with amino acid therapy, essential fatty acids and certain herbal remedies for brain balance. In Los Angeles, Hyla Cass, MD is the “go to doc” and David Gersten, MD is located in Encinitas. Good luck! Hello Dr Toni: I just read your column in Vision Magazine. You are quite skilled and exceptionally compassionate. I seem to have the dis-ease of needing to move and change constantly. I don’t have family, but I have wonderful friends. I’m not sure where I want to be, or how to ground and connect to the Earth. I always say that it will take a man to settle me down. Yet I’m super ready to ground. A friend thinks my moving comes from a feeling of being trapped. Help!! Thanks, Dr Toni. Georgia
Numerous classes are offered in the months of September and October to complete the required prerequisite trainings.
Dear Georgia: If it is in your nature to constantly change, that in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing. Most people have the opposite problem: fear of change. For them, change translates as loss. From your description, it sounds like staying rooted feels as if you will lose something, such as freedom. Your possible solution of getting into a relationship as a way of grounding yourself is superficial at best, and ineffective, if not downright destructive at worst. Anytime we use something external to ground us, especially a person, we are at risk of becoming ungrounded again if they leave. More importantly, relationships take a lot of work and commitment. You don’t always get the freedom you might have as a single person, so you really have to be ready to compromise some of your impulses for the sake of loving and being in service to another human being, as well as serving the relationship. It is definitely a life path and for some—a spiritual path not to be taken cavalierly. I would recommend getting into some counseling to examine what your fears are of staying in one place and not moving on so quickly. There are also certain physical practices such as Qigong that can help with grounding your body to the Earth’s energy once you have emotionally decided that you really want this. Try this: Imagine you are a tree. What tree would you be? A willow that bends with the winds of change, but still has deep roots in the Earth? Or an oak that provides shade for people who want to sit under it and be protected from the sun? Think about all the trees you’ve enjoyed. Which one attracts you most? There is also a Qigong exercise to try called Standing Like a Tree: Stand with your knees slightly bent, spine extended upward and your arms held outward as if embracing a large sphere. Breathe deeply here. This practice can help you stay grounded throughout the day.

Consider the Luddite
m e
© 2009 by Michael Raysses
“Change is not merely necessary to life—it is life.” – Alvin Toffler “I got no problem with change, so long as things stay the same.” – My Uncle Tasso Luddite: (noun) an opponent of new technology; an opponent of technological or industrial change Author’s note: In 2004, the inestimably talented writer David Foster Wallace penned an essay for Gourmet magazine entitled, “Consider the Lobster.” In it, he used the Maine Lobster Festival as a prism with which to investigate the plight of the titular guest of honor, the lobster, while discoursing wildly about pain, its nature, and the predicament of those inflicting it while in the seemingly benign act of cooking. Oddly enough, rereading this essay left me identifying more with the lobster than I care to admit in ways that had nothing to do with gastronomy. And though the forces arguably responsible for my pain aren’t literally dropping me in boiling water, I am still left feeling immersed in a hi tech cauldron that scorches me no less effectively. Bon appétit.
Beyond their obvious utility, though, phone booths served a dual purpose, one I would argue is of a higher calling: they shielded people outside the booth from having to overhear conversations that were more than likely less than compelling. Thus, they allowed your own banal discussions to continue unabated. There was sonic order where auditory chaos lurked in the wings. But the phone booth has gone the way of the Fotomat—though technically not extinct, you don’t want to bet any money on finding one. Not surprisingly, these days we Luddites aren’t kidding ourselves about the state of modern culture. Getting into a tug of war with technology, its hi tech progeny, and its millions of acolytes is a losing proposition. And the exquisitely understated value of a phone booth is lost in the tidal wave of technological advances made in the telecommunications industry. This is a business that goes a long way to increasing the speed at which people communicate, the ways in which they do so, all while diminishing the quality of the experience of the act itself. All of which leaves me feeling seared, as I see the quality of life diminish incrementally, day by day, transaction by transaction. I work at an outdoor restaurant with an oceanside view that would make Poseidon proud. But apparently even that natural beauty can’t compete with the allure of a BlackBerry, as I have witnessed countless patrons who chose to blather ad infinitum rather than surrender a moment to the wonder set right in front of them. Now you may argue that people must communicate, and that communication trumps all else, a rationale whose merit runs deep. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s continued on page 42
I have just returned from my weekly Luddites Anonymous meeting. That’s the 12-step program that helps rubes like me negotiate life in a world that is awash in technology, its gadgets, and most tellingly, its thrall. This last meeting was especially eventful. We waxed nostalgic about the feeling of superiority we felt when we figured out how to get our VCRs to quit blinking “12:00” and actually tell the correct time. And when the rush of that reverie faded, we moved on to a discussion of some of the great inventions in the world of telecommunications. Innovations like the phone booth. You may not actually remember the kind of phone booth to which I am referring. Clark Kent allegedly used one to change into his Superman costume, but, practically speaking, I can’t imagine how he successfully performed that feat unless one of his super powers was removing a suit and tie while standing perfectly erect. The phone booth’s beauty derived from the way it perfectly functioned. It was barely noticeable to the casual observer, for instance. In restaurants and other indoor public places, they were oftentimes located in the back of the establishment or at least off to the side. And if that wasn’t subtle enough, they were recessed into the wall, making it difficult if not impossible to bump into one even if you tried. But their best trait was that they were dark until you stepped into one and closed the sliding door—that’s when they sprang to life. An overhead light would beam on while a fan would begin to blow to make sure you could breathe comfortably. The fan also served to lay down a little ambient noise, so that in the event you spoke too loudly, no one outside would be able to discern what it was you were talking about. Can Lab Meat Beat Meat? by Heidi Harmony Cohen-Wolff
H
ave you ever noticed what lengths people will go to in order to get their hands on something they really enjoy? This holds especially true for addicts. Did you know that scientists have claimed that hamburgers and french fries could be as addictive as heroin? What people are most attached to are their comfort foods—foods that bring fond childhood memories, fill a void, and even heal pain and frustration. Sadly though, most of these so called “foods” bring a hidden cost of suffering to innocent animals, destruction of our precious ecosystem and an assortment of diet-related diseases. We are living in an age of convenience where availability, familiarity and taste take precedence over these consequences. We have arrived at a pivotal time on Earth where the scales have nearly tipped too far to reverse the damage we have created through technological advances, factory farming and a throwaway society. Many believe that it’s almost inevitable that in the next 50 years or less, people will be forced to turn to a vegetarian diet due to a lack of available resources to raise animals. Luckily, non-animal based mock meats and dairy products have greatly improved over the last 20 years. Many are so close to the real thing that often vegans won’t even eat them. Yet, some omnivores are still not convinced. In comes lab meat. The concept of lab meat dates back at least 70 years. In 1932, Winston Churchill wrote, “Fifty years hence, we shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium.” NASA has been working on growing petri dish meat as part of their

space experiments for quite some time now. In 2000, NASA scientists were able to grow something resembling fish fillets in vitro from extracted fish cells. Their goal was to find ways to feed the crew during extended space expeditions. Agricultural scientist Jason Matheny and his colleagues at the University of Maryland are working on how to produce lab meat on an industrial scale. Matheny is the director of New Harvest, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting and funding cultured meat. In its experimental stages, the process is apparently quite tedious. It begins by extracting various cells (fat and muscle tissue) and isolating them. The cells then divide into thousands more cells. Stem cells are suspended on large plastic trays or silicon sheets while they are bathed in a nutrient rich broth. These single layers grow and must be stretched in order to achieve similar texture that exercising muscles would. Once the layers are complete, they would have to be stacked to produce large pieces of meat. Currently however, the results are a mushy substance with a creamy color. Some other complications that are yet to be solved relate to which type of starter cell would be most efficient. They are still unsure if it is embryonic stem cells that multiply abundantly yet require work to produce muscle, or myoblasts that form muscle tissue but with limited proliferation ability. While issues of taste and texture still exist with petri dish meat, ask yourself this: Do you think the diseased “throwaway” parts that make up hot dogs, sausage, and chicken nuggets are appetizing before they are covered-up with spices and flavors? Some say that in vitro technology will never produce pork chops or steak because the mouthfeel of meat has a lot to do with intermixed blood vessels, connective tissue and fat. Arguably, science has already accomplished amazing feats in terms of mock meat; I know many people who have taken an unsuspecting friend or relative to their favorite plant-based restaurant and fooled even the most avid meat-eater with a delectable seitan (wheat) veal or soy beef Wellington. Cost is still a big concern with lab meat as well, related primarily to the nutritive broth. A study conducted by the In Vitro Meat Consortium surveyed all of the broths and concluded that even on an industrial scale, it would cost twice as much as unsubsidized chicken. They are considering the option to use genetically engineered E. Coli bacteria to produce the protein needed to make the broth. This sounds a bit risky to me. Speaking of health issues, various sources say lab meat can be engineered to fit dietary standards. Hormones and fat levels could be lowered and Omega-3 and -6 levels adjusted. Nutrients can also be added. It seems that this could be healthier than farm animal meat. But do we really know how safe this meat will be with all of these modifications, genetic and otherwise? No. However, do most consumers know how safe the meat products they already eat are and what happened to the animal before it arrived on their plates? Consider that 95 percent of food poisoning cases today originate from animal-based agriculture. The filth and disease levels of animals on factory farms today is atrocious—I couldn’t fathom a petri dish piece S EP T E M B ER 20 0 9
of meat being nearly as dangerous. And let’s not forget mock meats, which are more healthful in that they don’t contain hormones, cholesterol, parasites and other risky organisms. Environmental realities offer a compelling argument for meat alternatives. A meat-based diet requires seven times more land than a plant-based diet. It takes about 300 gallons of water per day to produce food for a vegan, and more than 4,000 gallons of water per day to produce food for an omnivore. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, raising animals for food contributes more greenhouse gases than transportation. It is unrealistic to continue on this unsustainable path. Therefore, if the world desires to eat meat, petri dish meat or mock meat might be the only options left. PETA is offering a prize of $1 million to the first person or organization who comes up with commercially viable in vitro meat by 2012. The idea of meat being “grown” without the suffering of a sentient being is elating for those who deeply care about animals. The amount of abuse that animals on factory farms endure is unfathomable to most. While it is widely believed that organically raised meat is different, this is frequently not the case. Many organic farm operations still engage
m i n d s t a t e s in the killing of newborn chicks, the separation of mothers from babies, painful milking machines and overcrowding in sheds. So, is lab meat the answer to the despicable life of farm animals? Perhaps, but there are still some concerns to consider such as: Will animals continue to be captured, caged and experimented on in order to produce the best cells? Will researchers venture into exotic meats using zoo animals? Only the future will reveal the answers to these questions. Lab meat may not sound so unappetizing once you expose yourself to the reality of what goes on behind closed doors in stockyards and slaughterhouses. So, you decide which is true biotechnology: is it technological advances in a lab or our warped model of churning living beings into gadgets on a production line for profit? Reconnect to Your Own Healing Potential A Conversation with Eric Pearl, Founder of The Reconnection by Sydney L. Murray
E
ric Pearl blew my mind when we spoke last month. His enthusiasm and his humility regarding his work are notable. Pearl speaks about traveling the world and teaching Reconnective Healings. Often at the same time, he has the opportunity to markedly affect the health and wellbeing of another. I was touched by his matter-of-fact recitations of his ability to help a person regain their health, frequently from very difficult places. I am reminded that the greatest people I have met are also the most humble. Pearl’s belief that we all hold this power within our own being is nothing new, but his treatise about his teachings is filled with joy and the sureness of knowing what many are seeking. Vision Magazine: What are your thoughts on the high tech world that we live in? Eric Pearl: We get to be in touch with many more people and spread our messages much farther. And yet it requires a higher level of consciousness so that we can maintain

human contact. We also need to sense when communication ought to happen by picking up the phone, even if it’s to say let’s go to dinner. We can reap the benefits [of technology] without, hopefully, the loss of humanity. VM: How did you discover The Reconnection? EP: I was a chiropractor somewhere in my 12th year of practice when a light came bursting through my eyes in the middle of the night. I awoke to see that it was just the lamp next to my bed that had turned itself on. Of course, I’d had the lamp for 10 years and it hadn’t selected any other previous occasion to self-ignite, but there it was. And I felt people in my house, which was very unusual and unsettling. On that Monday, I went into my office and suddenly, seven of my patients told me that they saw people in the room with us—pretty much the way that I’d felt people in my home. Other patients were telling me that they could feel my hands before I touched them. I’d hold my hand a yard or two away, and they could tell where I was. Many times, it felt that I was at more than one place to them or that multiple people were standing around them. As I continued to experiment with this, people started reporting healings; they were getting out of their wheelchairs and their vision and hearing were returning to them. We find that we’re in a space where time is opening up and expanding. Our world is opening and expanding out farther into this huge multidimensional universe and we are able to access more what of has always existed in the universe that hasn’t been used before. It takes us beyond anything we’ve been able to access through any form of energy healing that we’ve known of, whether it’s Reiki or theta healing. What science has demonstrated is that once we access this new healing, what they call the Reconnective Healing Spectrum, or the bandwidth of frequencies, the entirety of energy which has not been within our four dimensional experience becomes available. Others have explained that Reconnective Healing is not another healing modality. It is its own genre, its own field of healing, which is so vast and comprehensive that it includes anything and everything we’ve known through energy healing and takes us far beyond.

VM: Have you gotten a response from the scientific community on your work? EP: Lots of people are researching it and that’s how we’re getting some of these insights. Suddenly children with cerebral palsy are running and speaking normally and regaining the use of their hands and feet. Children with epilepsy are no longer having seizures—and the healings aren’t lasting for just a week, but for their lifetimes. Science is asking, What makes Reconnective Healing so distinctly different than any energy healing we’ve known? Researchers from around the world are being universally drawn to what’s going on because they’re seeing these healings in hospitals and private practices. We’ve trained approximately 66,000 people from 70 countries on how to heal and 20 percent of these people are mainstream healthcare providers—doctors, nurses, and physical therapists. VM: What was a memorable healing for you? EP: I had just given a presentation in Greece, in a small coliseum setting. At the end when I was getting ready to leave, a group of people came up carrying this boy in leg braces who had cerebral palsy. He was unable to walk and stand by himself. They took off his leg braces and we started to work. We only had four minutes until the coliseum closed, and at the end of the four minutes, the child got off the table, walked down to the steps of the stage by himself, and ascended the entire staircase of the coliseum without touching anyone or anything. Two days later, his parents brought him down to show me that he was not only able to walk and run normally, but he was able to stand on one leg and spin in a complete circle. This is why science is saying that there is something new, beyond anything we’ve known about any form of energy healing. But we can only access it if we are willing to do so. We can only access it when we transcend the techniques, because our energy healing techniques are simply training wheels. Generally, we find a technique and the teachers tell us to come back and learn more, we write another check and then we get frustrated. We’re really good at the technique but we’re not masters of healing yet, so we learn another technique and another technique, another set of training wheels, but none of us have mastered healing and none of us ever will until we let go of the technique and transcend the technique itself. Our masters have known this throughout the ages, but our teachers seem to either not know this or not want us to know this for various reasons. It is time for us to become the teachers of the teachers. VM: What’s your interpretation of 2012? EP: We’re not going to wake up December 22, 2012 and suddenly be invisible. We’re probably not going to notice much more that morning than we noticed the morning of Y2K. I think we’re only going to recognize it five or 10 or 15 years later when we look back and see the expansion that humanity went through around 1980 and 2012; that’s when we’re really going to see it. Although, I do believe that we’re going to receive some seemingly earth-shattering news around that time as well—in an exciting and fun way. It just sounds a little frightening at the moment. People think it will be the end of the world; it won’t. It will just be the end of the world as we know it in an exciting new way. VM: Based upon your experience, if there is one thing each of us can do every day that would change our lives, what would it be? EP: To begin to recognize when we are being spoon-fed fear disguised as love. Darkness doesn’t exist. Darkness is simply a place where we have not allowed ourselves to shine yet. We [need to] step into the healing situation and allow ourselves to simply be the truth and the purity of light that we are. any thousands of authenticated healings are hiddden away in the special calm of a Christian Science Reading Room. This precious place is open for all to find how they can be healed, well supplied, and securely loved. This is a place for seekers to find answers. People who have visited the Reading Room have been healed of age-related problems. We have seen people healed of urinary tract issues, incontinence, and problems with the sciatica nerve. One person had his well-aged parent completely healed, while another found much needed employment—and the list goes on. Since the late 1800s, our periodicals, The Christian Science Sentinel, a weekly magazine, and The Christian Science Journal, a monthly publication, have documented thousands of healings through understanding God. Articles on every kind of healing imaginable are categorized through titles, authors, and subjects available on computer programs. These articles show how to understand and accept the ideas that actually heal people. You may wonder, How can healing happen without material methods? Many people love God but don’t understand God. Perhaps they love and read the Bible, attend inspiring church services, yet they still feel separate from God and often really do not understand what God is seeing and doing. We are all ignorant of God to some degree. Mary Baker Eddy had read the Bible since she was a child and knew it well, but still suffered from many ailments. She sought healing through almost every means available but never found permanent relief. At the age of 45, she had a serious fall on ice and the doctor attending her told her family that he did not
expect her to live until morning. She asked for her Bible, read one of Jesus’ healings, gained new insight into how healing took place, and found that she was suddenly well. For the next three years, she searched the Bible and was awakened to the higher meaning of its message. She soon became able to heal as Jesus did. She realized how Jesus understood God’s creation. Through this study she began to write down her inspiration and teach others. These writings were the beginning of her main work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. It in no way replaces the Bible; it simply brings out the spiritual importance of its teachings. What Mrs. Eddy discovered photo by Jobina Avonley and proved is that God is present everywhere—yes right where you are—and that God is perfect goodness. She saw that God has made us spiritual and perfect, and that this understanding heals. She discovered far more than a theory—she discovered Truth. Now you may be thinking, How can this be? How do we attain this unity with perfection? Through finding and understanding the real nature of God, we begin to understand perfection in this imperfect world. This is the ultimate practice. It’s complete in every way. Accepting what God is usually requires a leap of faith, but our steps are upheld by the arms of our Maker who loves us. It is very sweet indeed. Once a student makes this shift in thinking and sees the favorable results, the light dawns in consciousness and Truth is received and accepted. It can be

High Tech Fish Farming in Your Own Backyard:
A Modern Gardening Eco-System by Tilapia Mama
G
rowing tilapia along with edible plants and vegetables in a modern high tech backyard fish farm system is becoming a favorite among urban farmers and home gardeners alike. It’s called aquaponics—combining aquaculture and hydroponics (plants grown without soil) to create a sustainable ecosystem which brings significant benefits and cost savings, especially given current water shortages. This new technology uses much less water than conventional gardening and you don’t lose much through evaporation either. And, aquaponically farmed vegetables grow much faster than those grown in a conventional garden because organic fish waste is a wonderful balanced fertilizer. Your harvest is organic because you cannot use chemicals—they would harm your fish. Backyard fish farming works this way: You feed the fish, the fish provide fertilizer for the plants in the water, and the plants and beneficial bacteria then clean the water for the fish. A simple high tech backyard fish farm is easy to manage and creates the ultimate sustainable food source. Plus, if you are vegetarian or vegan, you do not have to eat the fish; just let them live A simple barrel is ideal for raising fish and organic vegetables happily. Tilapia Of the various kinds of fish used for aquaponics, tilapia are the easiest for beginners to grow successfully. In high demand and sold increasingly in restaurants and markets, tilapia are tolerant to changes in water quality, resistant to disease and can be fed a wide range of feed. The quality of the fish, including the Omega-3/ Omega-6 content, is based on what the fish eat. Fish feeds based on corn result in
high Omega-6 levels in commercially raised tilapia. Feeding your fish ground flax seed will boost their Omega-3 content. A simple energy-efficient 200-gallon intensive recirculation backyard fish farm can easily support 50 pounds of fish. These systems are designed to be compassionate to the fish and help them thrive. The fish enjoy fresh clean water at a three-foot depth, community life with other fish, and plenty to eat. Stocking the backyard fish farm every month with new fingerlings results in a food production schedule allowing a daily/weekly harvest of fish. If you don’t want to eat your tilapia, you can just enjoy watching them grow. Aquaponics works fine with pet koi and goldfish, as well. Fish Water The key benefit of a backyard fish farm is the fish wastewater, a wonderful fertilizer that is good for hydroponics and watering any plant in the garden. You can use it for drip irrigation for raised beds, your water garden, or fruit trees. Fish water fertilizer contains significant quantities of nitrogen and a healthy balance of all 18 nutrients known to be significant for crop growth. Nitrogen and all the other essential nutrients found in the fish water, plus many more trace minerals, continued on page 43

Aries: Hermit (10 of Wands) 3/21-4/19 What do you do when the weight of the world rests upon your back? There will always be periods in life that are less exciting; however, in most cases, your attitude is actually the cause of your feelings. In order to cope with life’s demands, it’s important to recognize how you deal with stress. You undoubtedly know how to tend to your own needs—make sure you’re doing so. Spend time alone this month connecting to your inner wisdom and you may find that things are less problematic than you thought.
Libra: Lovers (2 of Swords) 9/23 – 10/23 Pinned between choices is enough to make anyone a little nuts, especially when the head and heart are divided. Sometimes too much analysis leads to feelings of paralysis. True, you are great at seeing both sides of an issue, but you are not always so good at initiating in either direction. An impasse in your life is the result of too much thinking, too much worrying and too much complaining. You don’t have to make the perfect choice—just make a choice! Even if it doesn’t go as planned, the momentum will pull you out of your rut.
Taurus: Wheel of Fortune (Knight of Pentacles) 4/20-5/21 As the world turns, so do our lives, and yet, deep within, we remain unchanged. You’ll experience a change this month in finances and/or health, and although you may want to dig your heels in, let it go. Remind yourself that change is merely movement and that you do have a say in how you move. Do it gracefully. A project you’ve been working on will begin to gain momentum; take it slow and be thorough. Avoid making impulsive purchases. Don’t be fooled by the wrapping; what you see might not be what you get.
Scorpio: Sun (4 of Cups) 10/24 – 11/22 It’s amazing how many committees exist in your head, all of which have conflicting and somewhat outdated ideas. Even more amazing is that you actually listen to them, believing that they’re reflective of your truth. Try for a moment to observe what you are being told; then ask yourself whether you actually agree with it. You have the chance to dissolve these “opinions” and adopt a new frame of mind. Rather than relying on the committees, look with the eyes of a child and observe from a more open perspective. Also, be careful not to dismiss the feelings of others this month.
Gemini: Death (10 of Swords) 5/22 – 6/21 There is a big life change this month that will surely challenge your way of thinking. It could be that plans take a massive detour, requiring you to relinquish control over something important. Unfortunately, there’s no getting out of this one, and, in fact, your ego is likely to be a little bruised in the process. On a more positive note, this detour will surely lead you to a larger opportunity. Working with this energy, now is a great time for throwing out the old to make space for the new. Don’t procrastinate!
Sagittarius: Temperance (6 of Cups) 11/23 – 12/21 Certainly our past contributes to our present, but the degree to which it still influences us says a lot about how we live our lives. Have you learned from your past or are you a prisoner to it? Past experiences are like spices; the flavor of your life depends on how you choose to season it. Why add bitterness by holding on to resentments or too much sweetness by sugarcoating your mistakes? You are the alchemist in charge of what you use and don’t use—none are wholly good or bad, just seasons of experience. An old dream emerges begging for a new recipe.
Cancer: Star (4 of Wands) 6/22 – 7/22 Although there are various perspectives in the world, we all contribute to a universal consciousness. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the energy in the world affects you and vice versa. Take a moment and ask yourself how you’re contributing to the greater good. Turn off the TV, get off the computer or cell phone, and tune in to the silence. It’s in this space that you’re connected to everything and have the opportunity to experience the magic of life. The best part? This connection is available to you anytime and anywhere!
Capricorn: Chariot (Ace of Cups) 12/22– 1/20 The current of life will pull you in many different directions, and although you may try at times to fight against it, ultimately it will prevail. The emotional struggles this month are like wild horses; to tame them, you must be aware of your reactions. Movement too strong in any one direction will likely throw you off course. Adopt a more detached perspective; witness the situation and consciously choose how to respond. An emotional encounter with someone close to you will trigger passionate feelings. Think before you react because once you do, there is no taking it back.
Leo: Emperor (9 of Pentacles) 7/23 – 8/23 When your success is dependent upon a thing, that thing becomes the source of fulfillment. However, lasting fulfillment is obtained by overcoming personal challenges and meeting cherished goals. In this way, a sense of pride fuels your self-esteem. A situation you have been patiently tolerating will yield favorable results, and as you collect the prize, be sure to do it with dignity. Someone you’ve been trying to impress finally gives you the respect you deserve. Take from this confidence, authority, and success, but not at the expense of another. A true leader needs only to direct oneself.
Aquarius: Magician (Knight of Cups) 1/21 – 2/18 We are all a part of the greater whole and each of us plays an important part, whether conscious or not. When you believe in yourself, you honor this role and your actions become an extension of you. Pay attention to the vibes you are sending out in the world and ask yourself if this is what you represent. It takes trust to be comfortable with who you are because in doing so, you acknowledge and accept yourself despite what others think. Take pride in who you are and others will treat you the way you treat yourself.
Virgo: Empress (King of Swords) 8/24 – 9/22 Creativity must be cultivated in order for it to flourish, but living a creative life is a mindset. Combining the two makes anything possible. Problems turn into puzzles, dreams become blank canvases, and thoughts are the tools with which we create. As a divine artist, you have authority over the medium you use; but as a person, you don’t have power over other artists. Focus your attention on creating not controlling, find imaginative solutions to your problems, and spend your energy in more inventive ways. Life is as good as you make it, problems and all, so make the most of what you have!
Pisces: World (3 of Pentacles) 2/19 – 3/20 Life is an anthology of endings and beginnings. Just as you believe that you’ve seen the last of something or someone, a reminder conjures up that experience and brings it back into being. A goal you thought was complete will arise again, asking for more of your energy and attention. This time, however, you must approach it from a different standpoint. Success or completion is not as important as integration—how have you been changed? When you involve yourself authentically with your pursuits, the payoff is personally fulfilling and lifelong.

Bridging the High Tech Generation Gap - One Gadget at a Time by Patricia Alfano
M
any years ago on her birthday, my mother anxiously opened one of her gifts. It was a camera. A puzzled look crossed her face as she turned the object around in her hands and studied its buttons and hinges. She carefully put it back in the box and graciously thanked everyone. When she died, we found the camera still in its box, tucked away in her underwear drawer. My parents’ expertise with anything high or even low tech, was practically nonexistent; which is probably why they were so ecstatic when my brother Don chose to pursue a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Becoming an engineer was the next best thing to his becoming a priest—and he received the same amount of adulation for his decision. I remember when I was a teenager and would come home to find Don wiring the strangest things together. His passion for electrical engineering sparked him to conduct such experiments as having the oven turn on when the phone rang; or the television switch off when the bathroom light was flicked on. He drove us all crazy. The basement in our home was filled with our extended family’s television sets, radios and anything else of an electronic nature, which they left for my brother to fix. At the time, none of us realized that later in life his tinkering would pay off with numerous patents for his gizmos and inventions. In complete contrast to my brother, my parents struggled with each new technological invention. For example, when the VCR came along, their attempt to use it provided more entertainment than the television did—and fodder for numerous VCR stories. “You mean I can tape ‘Search for Tomorrow,’ go have coffee at Annette’s house, then come back and watch it anytime?” My mother asked, fingering the remote. “How does this work?” Several months later, she still couldn’t understand how to operate the VCR. My brother drew her pictures, wrote step-by-step detailed instructions and patiently navigated her fingers around the buttons. Her solution was to have him do the programming, which worked until he decided to get married and move out. That day she cried. Not because her baby was leaving, but because neither she nor my father had yet to figure out how to program the darned thing.
“I have no use for it,” is my father’s retort when we tell him he needs to get this or that new device. My brother bought a cell phone for my father so that we could keep better track of his whereabouts. At 92, his stubborn, independent streak was causing us to worry. He fervently fought—and lost—the argument over having to take it with him whenever he left his apartment. “Just let me program the cell phone for you so that all you have to do is push one button to reach anyone,” was my son’s plea as he watched my father call at least four people by mistake because he was selecting the wrong numbers and pushing the wrong buttons. “I don’t want the cell phone,” he protested, accenting the phone part of the term as he pronounced the name of the despised object with a slight Italian accent. “I have no use for it. I don’t understand the language.” Language? I didn’t know what he meant until I started having my own problems trying to keep up with the latest cyberspace vernacular. I complained to my unsympathetic son that Yelp, Hulu and Twitter sound more like the names we gave to various dances back in the day instead of a means to communicate. Every time I think I’ve made progress, some other website, software or code word swoops down from cyberspace and leaves me in the high tech dust. But, it’s not all bad. Many of the gadgets that have made it into my family have provided us with enough laughter to fill our hearts for a long time. My son visited my father recently and tried to talk him into getting a personal computer. He brought his own computer along to show how the camera and programs such as Skype could enable one to actually see the other person during a conversation. Miles away, I patiently waited with my own computer set to begin our conversation. After what seemed like an eternity, my dad’s image finally appeared on the screen. “Just push here,” my son instructed. “Yeah,” my father mumbled. “Now just…” my son began to direct. “Yeah, yeah.”

I don’t advocate trashing all computers or cell phones. But I do urge everyone to seek a balance of high tech and high touch before we can’t stop long enough anymore to smell the roses or gaze at the moon. The concept of high tech/high touch was originally posed by author/researcher John Naisbitt in his 1982 bestseller Megatrends. According to a Publishers Weekly review, “Naisbitt sees Americans trapped in what he calls a ‘Technology Intoxication Zone,’ and he urges people to unplug their laptops long enough to rediscover the simplicity of starry nights and snowfalls, and remember what it means to be human.” I emphatically agree. As a Life and Soul Coach specializing in conscious balance for life and soul evolution, I invite you to unplug from your machines and recharge your natural energy at least once a week. Try spending “face-time” with people you care about—or at least phone them instead of e-mailing or texting so you can listen to their voices and they can hear yours. Our voices contain emotional energy which is absent in texts and tweets. You can also balance Infowhelm easily and quickly by just tuning into nature: Walk on the beach or take a hike. Notice the moon’s phases as it evolves from new to full and back again each month. Enjoy the seasonal cycles of the Earth. The world’s energy flows in natural cycles and humans were not designed to operate 24/7 like the Internet. We need regular down-time to rejuvenate, relax and refocus. Psychology researcher Marc Berman, co-author of a University of Michigan study on memory and attention, discovered that being around traffic, billboards
l i v i n g a r t s and crowds is distracting and negatively affects memory, as does constantly listening to iPods. He suggests spending time at parks or the beach to calm your brain and increase your focus. We can also tune into natural frequencies by paying attention to the four elements—earth, air, water and fire—in our daily lives. As building blocks of energy, they’re metaphors for our physical world, mental processes, emotional feelings and spiritual connections. Our high tech toys and tools primarily express air or mental energy. So if you feel off-center, recharge by finding new ways to tap into the full spectrum of earth/physical, water/emotional and fire/ spiritual vibrations. Tuning into natural energy patterns wherever we can is a highly effective antidote for photo by Elyssa Paige Infowhelm. When we unplug regularly even for a few hours, we remember how to move at a more peaceful pace, communicate with more emotional depth, and pay more attention to what we see and feel. Imagine how energizing, balanced and calm our lives will be if we all consciously tune into each other and the world around us again! Birthing in a High Tech Civilization:
For the Expectant Mother and Anyone Who’s Ever Known One by Wendy Kenin
I
n the United States’ high tech birthing industry, a pregnant woman must do research and be ready to advocate for herself. Important safeguards for a fulfilling rite of passage are a birth plan and a solid birth team. If a mother-to-be doesn’t have the time to research all of the regional hospitals, birth centers, or homebirth practices, she may want to check with local friends who’ve had babies or find a doula who has experience with multiple providers and methods. Even if the birth does not go as planned, a mother may carry with her a positive memory of her milestone day if she is surrounded by an attentive and caring team. Believe it or not, it has only been one century since almost all births in the United States took place at home. Natural childbirth occurs when a woman gives birth with little or no medical intervention (depending on the varying definitions of the term). The process of choosing a natural childbirth imparts power and strengthens a woman’s autonomy. Planning a natural birth in the United States today requires stern commitment. The ACLU reports violations of pregnant women’s right to make their own medical decisions and pregnant women have even been jailed for refusing advice from their doctors. Expecting families must thoroughly interview caregivers about practices in order to find the professionals whose ideas match their own. For reproductive health as well as for personal sovereignty, it is critical for a woman to trust that her body knows how to birth, just as her body knows how to breathe. Nurses and doctors I have encountered in the hospital have all told me that they rarely see, or have never seen a natural birth. In today’s climate, a pregnant woman who relies on these professionals becomes subject to modern medicine’s latest trends.
Hospitals With a range of monitoring and protocols, the process of birthing in a hospital becomes the subject of analysis that regularly leads to successive medical interventions. Many women who intend to have a natural birth find themselves being guided by their caregiver to use pain medications, hormones, and more. Sadly, most pain medications reach the baby, who may be born intoxicated. Often the nurses who are on shift during labor have the greatest impact on labor decisions. Nurses are oriented toward measuring labor progress and administering pain medications. Doctors or midwives are also present during delivery. Depending on the people and the institution, hospital midwives may have an approach that is more conducive to a natural delivery. As a doula with a background in various birth settings, I strive to create a homebirth experience in the hospital. My attention is on providing the mother informational, emotional and physical support. Just like at home, the mother in the hospital may choose to walk around, turn out lights, and go through contractions in multiple positions for many hours to help the baby move down and to manage her pain. Often mothers are kept on an active schedule to resemble a textbook delivery, discounting that every woman, labor, and delivery is different. Nurses offer simulated hormones to bring on stronger contractions and move the labor along. When a woman in labor complains about pain, the nurse informs her of available medications. With every medical intervention comes more risk factors and typically one medical intervention leads to the next. “Failure to progress,” also called dystocia, is the leading cause of Cesarean delivery—major surgery of the abdomen and uterus—in the United States, not

Learning to Play with the Universe: Adapted from The Matrix Energetics Experience by Dr. Richard Bartlett
D
uring the 18 years of my medical practice, I’ve noticed that expectation can be both our worst nightmare and our greatest friend. It can provide the impetus for you to transcend the limits of your body conditions, your mindset, and your emotional circumstances so that anything is possible in the next moment. If, on the other hand, you believe that transformation is impossible, then your expectations will create that reality. For example, if you have a cut and you’re invested in the belief that it will take the skin two weeks to fully heal, the cut isn’t going to vanish overnight. Learning to play can help break down our expectations, which are just the unconscious rules we apply to reality. They aren’t reality’s rules; they’re our own rules based on our experiences and cultural conditioning. When you enter into play, you’re no longer thinking about outcomes, because the play is its own reward. You’re totally engaged in the present moment, which means you’re also outside of time. Play happens when you completely forget yourself—forget time, forget space, forget that you are even human—and instead become occupied with a moment. You might even call it bliss. I’ve seen pictures of saints and yogis who appear to be very serious but they have a twinkle in their eye, a little smile which says, “I get the joke.” The joke is that the universe isn’t “real;” it’s just playing with us. The saint is saying, “I am playing back, and I am having more fun than you are.” Do you think Jesus enjoyed playing with the universe? Do you think the universe liked playing with Jesus? The scriptural evidence suggests that the universe obeyed Jesus when he spoke to it. If that’s the case, then it doesn’t come from Jesus trying to control the universe in a left-brained way; it comes from Jesus being so attuned to the energies of creation that whatever he spoke was a command. When I talk about play, I’m not talking about running around for 15 minutes because your doctor said you need more exercise. That’s not play; that’s therapy. I’m talking about losing yourself so fully in whatever you’re engaged in that your sense of time and even your sense of self begin to change. The people who are most successful in life actually make their work into play. They have the most fun doing what they do naturally; work and play are both a natural expression of who they are. When you play, you are in effect accessing the creative potential of your right V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
brain, a part of you that is undernourished, overlooked and underutilized most of the time. The right brain is what geniuses like Einstein and Tesla used to solve problems in ways no one had ever thought of before. Play can become a meditative tool; it can be a work tool. It can be the paint you use to color your reality. Play can literally be anything that springs to the mind in what I call a sense of “innocent perception.” Jesus said that unless we become like little children we will not enter into the kingdom of heaven. It’s this childlike sense of wonder and possibility that we want to cultivate. If we cultivate strong beliefs and ideas, we will not be open to possibility and instantaneous change. Let’s say, for example, that I had painfully sprained my ankle. If I were to look at my ankle and see a wound that would take six to eight weeks to heal, I would be creating an inflexible reality that would not allow for healing to happen in the next moment. If, on the other hand, I were to cultivate the state of innocent perception, I might look at my ankle and see something unexpected—feathers or a frog or a bouncing tennis ball or whatever shows up, unbidden by my conscious mind. I would literally escape the trap of my left brain’s rational awareness, and in that next moment my ankle could be transformed and the sprain could be healed. That is the value of play. One of the best ways to cultivate healing in a given situation is to ask a simple childlike question: What would it be like if things were different right now? The cultivation of asking useful, open-ended questions for which you don’t necessarily have an answer creates a welcoming response from the universe. This continued on page 44

e live in a technologically defined age, an era in which almost everything we do makes use of or is influenced by the wonders of industry and science. Being itself neutral in character, this powerful force can be harnessed to create everything from important new diagnostic tools for doctors to weaponry and mind control, from the long lasting solar electric panels I power this laptop with to dreadful nuclear warheads whose blast could seem to briefly outshine even the sun. Brain implants can be put to use by doctors to help patients manage their seizures, or by an intrusive future government seeking to further increase its control over all aspects of our behavior. The mistake lies in our tendency to think of technology in polar terms of black and white. We may see it either as our earthly savior from discomfort and suffering, a remedy for every problem our relentless tinkering might ever cause, or else as an evil genie unleashed from its bottle, from which no good is believed to come without unjustifiably harmful and dehumanizing results. In reality, it will never be a cure-all, nor would the world suddenly become a peaceful paradise if every high tech creation were to disappear. If we’re to serve as the conscious, deeply feeling and highly discerning co-creators of our world and reality we evolved to be, we need to be able to see technology for the hugely complex, dual-edged sword that it is, and then act accordingly. We need to define our relationship to inevitable innovation not in terms of acquiescence or adoration, cynicism or rejection, but rather, personal responsibility and astute, mindful selection. Indeed technology is not, nor will it ever be, solely benign. Those solar panels I mentioned earlier make no noise, create no exhaust, and allow us to get by without buying electricity from conglomerates that dam nearly every flowing river or burn polluting coal. On the other hand, their manufacture required a number of potentially harmful processes, beginning with the mining of its basic and finite materials. Worse yet perhaps, is that the same kinds of solar cells also power American surveillance satellites that are or have the potential to intrude upon the private lives of its own citizens. Moving Past Controversy in Stem Cell Technology by Ashlie Rodriguez
F
rom the ritualistic chants of medicine men to the painful procedure of bloodletting, it has taken centuries for humans to discover the causes of and cures for their ailments. Only within the last 200 years has science been able to shed light on the validity of medical practices. In the mid-1800s, the germ theory of disease was formally accepted, followed by Joseph Lister’s revolutionary discovery of antiseptics, forever changing the landscape of medical know-how. The 20th century brought about even more advances in medicine. Through the unearthing of vaccines and antibiotics, thousands of lives were saved from illness and infection. It was during this period that for the first time in history, the discovery of human genetics explained the mysterious force behind sickness. Now, in this high tech generation, scientists are discovering cutting edge technology that promises the world advancements in health and medicine beyond our wildest imagination. The most prominent of these breakthroughs— and ironically, the most controversial— is embryonic stem cell technology. A Closer Look at Embryonic Stem Cells Extracting embryonic stem cells begins four to five days after an egg has been fertilized. At this point in development, the fertilized egg, or embryo, is known as a blastocyst made of 50-150 cells. The cells of a blastocyst are extremely versatile and regenerative, allowing them to replenish dying cells, such as those in cancer patients, or generate new tissues and reform damaged muscles. These lines are very adaptable and have the potential to develop into an estimated 200 cell types in the body, providing for a wide variety of treatments. Yet when embryonic stem cell research is mentioned, eyebrows immediately raise, lips pucker, and tensions flare. Although there is potential for stem cell lines to treat Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and even spinal cord injuries, the concept is an undeniably controversial one. For many religious and anti-abortion groups, ethicists and scientists, embryonic stem cells conjure up images of the industrialization of fertilized eggs, cloned babies, and the devaluation of human life. These groups believe that life starts at the moment sperm fertilizes an egg, leading to the interpretation that the destruction of an embryo is tantamount to the murder of a developing human. Scientists, a number of religious organizations, political leaders and countless others who have been diagnosed with irreversible ailments such as heart disease, leukemia and diabetes, view embryonic stem cells as the opportunity for hope, healing, and a second chance at life. Proponents of the research regard week-old embryos as only a cluster of cells that do not contain any human characteristics. They do not believe using the cells of an embryo amounts to destroying a human life. While both counterparts are valid in their beliefs, incessant butting of heads cannot bring about progress. Yet, it is only progress that can usher our world into the next chrysalis of health and longevity. V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
History shows us that in order for human evolution to flourish, rigid belief systems must be loosened, traditional mindsets must expand and higher knowledge, accepted. From the idea of germs to the conception of genes, the realization of progress is a gradual climb. By stubbornly holding onto personal agendas, by refusing to meet in the middle and move forward, our high tech generation only hinders development for those to follow. Stem cell research is a life saving, revolutionary technology which must be allowed to move forward. The question is: How can scientists bring about the health benefits stem cell research promises while adhering to ethical principles? President Obama may have found a solution to this ethical dilemma by pioneering a compromise between adversaries and proponents of embryonic stem cell research. In July, Obama fulfilled his promise to ease federal restrictions on stem cell research—but only on ethical grounds. Researchers now have access to the much sought after federal funds for embryonic stem cell lines, but only if they can ensure that lines were derived through ethical procedures. Researchers are now required to keep embryos left over from in vitro fertilization procedures, ensure donors are made fully aware of their rights and choices, and depend on absolute volunteerism in the donations of embryos. Donors cannot receive payment in any form. Obama’s effort to reconcile the two opposing groups is a step in the right direction, yet it is only one of many. Right now, researchers are confronting the stem cell stalemate head-on and working to expand the mediums of stem cell line generation. Stem Cells from the Scientific Perspective Ricardo M. Zayas, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology at San Diego State University, is the principal investigator of a laboratory devoted to studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tissue regeneration. Freshwater planarians, which are non-parasitic flatworms, are the subjects of his research, as they possess high regenerative capabilities and provide an excellent opportunity to explore molecular mechanisms that regulate maintenance, proliferation and differentiation of stem cells in vivo. Zayas believes that embryonic stem cell research is vital to moving forward in the field. “I think it is necessary to continue to study pluripotent stem cells, which means capable of giving rise to all the cell types in the body,” Zayas explained. “Until we know more about all the various stem cell types, it would be premature to discontinue studies using embryonic stem cell lines.” In his scientific opinion, many of the ethical dilemmas raised by pro-life groups are not valid and only hinder research. “The development of stem cell technology was the result of decades of challenging, careful experimentation carried out by numerous researchers,” Zayas pointed out. “I think the argument of embryonic stem cell technology as ‘bad science’ is a misrepresentation. A different question [in terms of] going forward is

According to Jonathan Tennenbaum’s article When Alan Howarth examined the worldwide instrumental tunings in music, in the Schiller Institute’s Fidelio magazine, C=256 (equivalent to A=426.7) was he discovered another significant fact: Many of history’s great composers worked widely recognized as the standard “scientific” or “physical” pitch until the 20th with the RA frequencies, which actually range between 421.5 and 426.3 cycles century. Since 1925, most Western music has been played and recorded in a V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E

standard tuning of A=440. This arbitrary standardization was imposed by the music industry so that all musicians would be in tune with each other, although some European orchestras still use other frequency values. “Like so many decisions in modern society,” explains Howarth, “it was made for the sake of standardization without considering the deeper implications. Unlike A=424, the standard musical tuning of A=440 does not correlate with the frequency ranges that support the natural systems.” RA Natural Frequency Music and Soul Types Alan Howarth encourages both musicians and listeners to return to the natural frequencies centered on A=424 and at A=432. Howarth and Bateman developed a web-based patented process to convert any standardized recording of music into RA Natural Frequency Music®. These RA conversions are designed to resonate with the listener’s brainwave generating centers down to the cellular level in a sympathetic manner. The result is natural stimulation of the brainwaves and associated frequencies that correspond to higher levels of perception. Their website (www.ramusic. com) provides samples of popular songs to compare with their A=424 versions. In addition to transposing existing pieces of music, the composer also recommends performing and recording music using these frequency references. He describes his first experience of composing and recording directly in RA frequencies: “I found myself within the most amazing pocket of creative energy… and I hit what musicians call the Zone. I was connected to my higher self and creativity flowed right out of my fingers. If you sing in these frequencies, your voice is in tune with the harmonics of your body and your mind, creating a similar inspired experience.” The first products of these unleashed creative energies were Indigo RA and Paradise Within, his two meditation CDs that are based on RA Music. Both incorporate the power of natural frequencies on a sonic journey with guided meditations, followed by Howarth’s original music that integrates the soothing soundscapes of nature. These CDs are currently available at www.alanhowarth.com. The nine format tunings ranging from 421.5 to 426.3 are another development of RA Natural Frequency Music. Researchers Alan Sheets and Barbara Tovey of www.newequations.com have linked these nine RA formats with their rediscovery of the Nine Soul Types, which are based on spiritual knowledge from ancient Egypt. Each of these nine energy patterns has its own unique path for creating a peaceful and sustainable global community—a goal that also harmonizes with the concepts of Star Trek. Grimm with tuning forks Voice Analysis and Sound Healing Another innovator in the realm of sound is researcher Sharry Edwards, who developed the concept of Human BioAcoustics with computer voice analysis at the Sound Health Research Institute in Albany, Ohio. She believes that the human voice represents the biochemical and structural aspects of the body, based on the observation that brainwave frequencies are impulse patterns: “This direct conduit from the brain and body to the vocal cords suggests a message pathway, supporting the theory that frequencies in the voice are representations of the autonomic nervous system’s activity.” (www.bioacousticsforsoundhealth. com). Incredibly, Edwards’ BioAcoustics Vocal Analysis computer software program can pinpoint individual frequencies related to various disorders and provide a mix of balancing tones to the client, who listens to them on a daily basis. A variety V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E
f e a t u r e of voice analysis programs now correlate frequencies with specific disorders such as 54 Hz for kidney stones and 72.5 Hz for chronic melancholy (www.biowaves. com). In addition to this technological approach, it is possible to use a sophisticated chromatic tuner without computer interface for voice analysis. Besides listening to the missing notes, the client can also sing them to restore the weak frequencies to the brain. In order to restore balance, it is important to release energy blockages reflected in the excessive tones. The notes of the scale can also be correlated with the chakras (energy centers) from the ancient Eastern Indian tradition of yoga, starting with “C” at the Root Chakra. This is followed by “D” at the Sacral, “E” at the Solar Plexus, “F” at the Heart, “G” at the Throat, “A” at the Third Eye, and “B” at the Crown Chakra. India also has a tradition of sound healing called Nada Yoga that dates back several thousands of years. Ancient Ayurvedic doctors often diagnosed their patients just by the sound of their voices. RA tuning forks are another sound healing tool that can be used to reestablish the balance of body, mind, and soul. In addition to the seven (or 12 chromatic) notes of the scale, brain tuners (delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves) or body (Om) tuners that match the Earth’s frequency at “C#” in the physical tuning of A=432 can be very effective for healing. The Future of Sound Healing Alan Howarth envisions a world where we are increasingly surrounded by the sounds of RA Natural Frequency Music. One of his recent inventions is his Sound Bubble 3D audio immersive technology, which he has demonstrated at various sound healing conferences. As a sound healing chamber, the Sound Bubble creates an immersive sonic shower of frequencies to reproduce how we actually experience sound. Howarth is currently expanding RA technology for converting entire radio and TV stations into the Alan Howarth’s Sound Bubble natural frequencies in real time. He also imagines a future where technologies for sound healing are part of our everyday routines: “You could have your voice analyzed on the phone and receive an MP3 of a favorite song with the frequencies required to balance your daily health.” This also conjures up the image of the tri-corder from “Star Trek,” a hand-held device that emits sound to analyze and immediately correct a person’s imbalances. But do we really have to wait for tri-corders and advanced technologies to heal ourselves with sound? These tools and techniques are already available for us to use. We are our own healers and have the power to create balance and health in our inner worlds. This approach has existed throughout time: It appears that the people of ancient Egypt, the Mayans, and other cultures already used sound to create harmony in their lives. This is your opportunity to boldly go where many have gone before you—to the sanctuary of healing sound. Sound therapist Christine M. Grimm offers workshops in Westwood (September 5 and 26), Santa Barbara (September 24), and Summerland (Sundays and Wednesdays). Her toning CD, Tune Your Voice - Tune Your Life, is now available in RA Music A=424 and the Nine Soul Types. The Santa Barbara singer/songwriter also produces and performs sound-healing concerts in the key of RA. but at great risk to ecological integrity and the continuance of evolution itself. The petroleumbased herbicides and pesticides that have helped farmers feed the growing population of the world have also damaged human and wildlife health. Life-saving antibiotics have spurred new forms of viral disease, and those given to livestock have reduced the immune response of the people eating them. Other effects are not so easily discerned. Case in point: A person grows stronger by pulling a load, pushing hard against an obstacle, or rising to a mental challenge. Thus to the degree it ensures ease and comfort, technology threatens to take away the very sources of our strength. It promises the possibility of our living hundreds of years through the use of synthetic bionic parts, and yet it is our awareness of the finite nature of life—of how relatively short our life spans are—that we come to fully appreciate, value, and concentrate on each precious present moment. It can accelerate our day-to-day activities and increase our production, but unless we take careful countermeasures, we may find ourselves experiencing things on a more superficial level, having no time for the depth of relationship and understanding that lead to wisdom and enlightenment. Because technology gives us the means to manipulate appearance, we find ourselves increasingly surrounded by the artificial, with a reduced capacity to know the difference. It is our job, then, to carefully examine and bodily intuit both the many benefits and possible problems, with not only the things we buy and subject ourselves to, but their components and the processes by which they were produced. This way we can ascertain their likely impact on us, on the human psyche itself, the precious diversity of culture, the wellbeing of other species and our shared environment, and the needs and direction of the living planet. The most “appropriate” technology is that which depletes the fewest resources and does the least damage, while accomplishing the most good. Appropriate means not “efficient” so much as beneficial and beautiful, leading us not away from self, earth and spirit, but ever deeper into those experiences and relationships we think of as natural or spiritual. Likewise, the most sustainable technology is
h e a l i n g
not that which can be sustained the longest, but that which helps sustain the spirit and integrity of human life, of other life forms, besieged habitat and the planetary whole. The Apple laptop I write this on was created out of plastics made from oil, which contributes to the pressure for more drilling in sensitive places like the pristine Arctic National Refuge. There’s environmental damage and pollution associated with the production of its computer chips, and those hours spent on it writing about spirit and the natural world are hours that could have been lived outside, directly engaged in practical matters or a personal quest. Does this mean that folks like ourselves, working to preserve nature and heal humankind, should reject the latest tools of technology? Of course not; that would only be relegating such tools to people who may have more interest in managing or exploiting our world. Nor should we ignore or downplay the personal, social and environmental cost of our using them. Instead, we can contribute to the balance by making the most of such existing technologies, putting them to work for the best of reasons, on behalf of even the most non-technologically focused causes. When we’re in touch with our aware, feeling selves, with spirit and the will of the land, we naturally know what technologies to reject or to use. We’re responsible decision makers, not antagonists or converts. We are empowered and informed by our connection to the rest of enchanted creation, impelled by a force deep inside ourselves, committed to sustenance and significance, healing and love. Numerology for Healing: Your Personal Numbers as the Key to a Healthier Life
I
n today’s high tech society, numbers are everywhere. For example, computers receive commands based on numerical patterns. If numbers are so powerful, why not use numerology to attain a healthy life? Michael Brill has worked with numerology since 1985, offering his knowledge to schools, businesses, the government, the aerospace industry and NASA. Brill’s book Numerology for Healing: Your Personal Numbers as the Key to a Healthier Life offers a powerful system that he developed, combining numerology, psychology, and quantum physics with concepts of reincarnation and gematria, which is the substitution of a numeric value to a word or phrase according to the Hebrew alphabet. Even if you are not a math lover, Brill’s numerology system is really easy to work with. By using your name and birthdate, you can discover the potential causes of your health conditions. This useful book contains details of more than 200 health conditions and their symptoms. Each ailment is organized alphabetically not just for convenience, but because Brill theorizes that there is a correlation between the letters that an ailment begins with and its cause. For example, in general, illnesses that start with the letter “A” like (acne or alcoholism) stem from issues with self-esteem. Brill advises readers to “explore the direct relationship between your personal numbers— especially numeric challenges—and the illnesses you have contracted, or created.” Numerology for Healing: Your Personal Numbers as the Key to a Healthier Life, $14.95 is available at www.innertraditions.com – CA
The Great Digitization and the Quest to Know Everything
H
ow many times a day do you search on the Internet rather than in a book in your quest for knowledge? There is no doubt that technology provides instantaneous answers to our questions in a fast paced world. But will there be room for books and libraries in our future, or will digitization render them obsolete? The Great Digitization and the Quest to Know Everything, by Lucien X. Polastron, explores the good and the bad of our digitized world. Polastron has done extensive work on how fast information that is freely delivered to the public’s computer screens can certainly be appealing. At the same time, Polastron investigates the moral consequences of digitization. One of the main issues he discusses is the quality and authenticity of information. Digitized information can easily be altered and subsequently sent to thousands of people, and in so doing, the original author and the validity of the writing can be negatively impacted. Digitization makes information more reachable to the masses; however, Polastron points out that information is not knowledge. Digitization is having an impact on every part of the world. Polastron’s work inspires human beings to realize how digitization is creating a revolution of information that is arguably more widespread than the one set off by Gutenberg’s printing press. It is up to us to create the future and protect the legitimacy of the information available at our fingertips. Cre a t ive C ol l ecti v e

Avartan: A Sitar Concert
industani music represents the devotional element of Nada Yoga, the science of sound, and empowers the musician to expand the experience in introspection to the audience. It has been a strong force in bringing together the various cultures of the subcontinent in a unique syncretism, in the process becoming representative of the innumerable aspects of Indian cultural history. Traditionally, this music has survived because of disciple musicians who have dedicated their lives to perfecting command of musical sound in order to gain the experience of utterly empirical realms. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is one such musician, who was born into the seventh generation of the Etawah family of musicians. Initiated first into the discipline of vocal music, it was several years before he was introduced to the sitar. This background defines Ustad’s unique style of sitar playing encompassing the tonal nuance and emotional directness of the human voice. This month the San Diego chapter of the Association for India’s Development (AID), a non-profit volunteer driven organization, has invited Ustad for their annual fundraiser, Avartan, to take place September 13. The organization was founded in 1991 by graduate students in Maryland and provides a platform for the Indian diaspora and the larger community in the United States to collectively think and analyze the rising inequalities in various sections of Indian society, positively contribute ideas and fund development projects in India. The organization is largely influenced by Gandhian principles and volunteers believe that a change in the society always starts within oneself and one’s own lifestyle choices. The San Diego chapter of AID was formed in 1999 and has 15 active volunteers. It supports seven projects in various states in India with an annual budget of around $40,000. The chapter welcomes ideas, contributions and participation from the
community to help support its efforts. Some of the issues the San Diego chapter addresses through various projects are: creating gender equality in disadvantaged communities (Utthan, Gujrat), educating farmers in natural farming methods (Chetna Vikas, Maharashtra), providing a school for children of prisoners and leprosy patients (Society for Economic and Educational Development, Tamilnadu), offering nursing courses for young women (Khajurdaha Nabankur United Club, West Bengal), and providing a school for dropouts (Shikshamitra, West Bengal) The San Diego chapter would like to emphasize that the success of many of these projects depends on the support given by the community! This concert is a great opportunity to experience the live music of a maestro and support a worthy cause. As Mahatma Gandhi says, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” Support Avartan, the annual fundraiser for the San Diego chapter of the Association for India’s Development, and experience a live performance by Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan on the sitar. The event will be held Sunday, September 13, 4 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. at the Irwin Jacobs Auditorium, 5775 Morehouse Drive, San Diego, CA. For more information, please visit http://sandiego.aidindia.org/avartan or call 215.971.0238.

But what happens when technology is used to create a better and cleaner world? Activeion Cleansing Solutions does just that, offering a product that unites technology with green living. As seen on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and PBS, The Activeion Pro is a light hand-held sprayer that replaces harmful chemical cleaning products. Did you know that every year Americans pour 5,280 tons of cleaning chemicals down the drain, many of which are harmful to plants, animals and humans? A revolutionary cleaning tool that protects the environment and saves you money, Activeion Pro uses only cool tap water to eliminate 99.9 percent of bacteria, according to a test performed by ATS Labs, an independent laboratory that is regularly audited by the Environmental Protection Agency. How does it work, you ask? The company explains that “the charged water passes through an ion exchange membrane, creating an oxygen-rich mixture of positive and negative nano-bubbles.” It’s not as complicated as it sounds; Activeion Pro is actually very easy to use. Simply charge it, fill it with cool tap water, and clean surfaces with the ionic water and a micro fiber cloth. The green light means that the water has been activated to literally attract dirt, oil, and bacteria away from surfaces. Say goodbye to expensive and unhealthy cleaning products and welcome the advanced technology of Activeion Pro. For more information on Activeion Pro, $299, visit www.activeion.com or call 612.296.8786. – CA

f you’re the sort of person who turns off the water when you brush your teeth and scrub your dishes, you may be interested to know that 40 percent of household indoor water is used to flush toilets. Sure you can “let it mellow if it’s yellow,” but if that’s not your style, Brondell has the ideal product for you to easily upgrade the water efficiency of your toilet. The Perfect Flush provides dual flush technology that saves 30 to 50 percent water use. Instead of incurring the time and cost of a new dual flushing toilet (which can run up to $650), the Perfect Flush is a simple upgrade that lets you choose between a half flush and a full flush at the push of a button. Installed in 30 minutes or less, it fits nearly all toilets, you can do it yourself, and there is no old toilet to add to the landfill. It is the ultimate eco-friendly product and it’s easy on the wallet, too. The system is now available at an introductory special of $99, and it will literally pay for itself in one year, as Brondell calculates that the Perfect Flush saves up to $100 in water costs annually, based on a household of four. All that you need to get your upgrade going is a set of four AAA batteries, which is good for 20,000 flushes. The Perfect Flush is eco-friendly, simple and cost-effective—what more could you ask for? I tend to run cold, even in the warm summer months. Just before I got ready to leave, Dr. Steve applied herbal packs of Frankincense and Myrrh (it would figure that a modern-day wise man would have these on hand) to my skin. I wore them all day, under my work clothes. To Summarize Research has shown that at least 90 percent of all doctor visits are due to symptoms that are stress-related. Dr. Virgil Chrane, clearly ahead of his time when he developed Alphabiotics in 1924, stated, “If we’re not in cellular repair, regeneration and growth, we are in a state of damage.” He was onto something almost 100 years ago; this idea is beginning to get a lot of press now. Chrane states further, “When you balance the brain first, the cells will then replicate like when we were babies.” This is one of the keys to anti-aging. Most importantly, Alphabiotics allows for these healing states to become long-lasting. Dr. Steve concludes, “I used to get frustrated when patients would return with the same problem over and over. I was working on the body—acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and yoga—to release tension, pain and disease. I didn’t realize that if all three components are not addressed—body, mind and brain—complete healing will not occur. All the bodywork in the world is fruitless if we don’t work with the brain, which is capable of recording patterns and establishing programs. Every tissue in the body is controlled by the brain except for the heart. My main goal is to empower people. We all have the ability to heal. I help get you there.” He makes a good point. It’s like taking a feather duster to the keyboard and screen on your computer, but ignoring the fact that all of your excellent software won’t load properly. at issue here. The crux of the problem is that technology has essentially refined the image of communicating while gutting the process. And it does so because of communication technology’s most salient side effect—taking us out of whatever moment we are in by stacking moments-to-be on top of one another in such a fashion as to practically make it impossible to fully inform any one instant because of the endless stream of them to come. This only then deposits us in a netherworld where we are fooled into believing we have connected with another person when in reality we have degraded any real connection we may have had with them to begin with. The point could be made that the kind of toll I am talking about is the cost of living in a world where hi tech generations are here whether we embrace them or not. And if the only casualty of the war waged between the Luddites and the Technophiles was the occasional missed connection replete with shared glazed looks by all parties involved, I could accept that. But now there is hard evidence that technology’s impact on people performing their jobs within the mass transportation industries has quite possibly contributed to massive accidents resulting in multiple deaths. And if that is acceptable to anyone, then we have really turned a corner—someone stick a fork in us because as a culture, we’re cooked. help to increase plant growth and vigor. Fish water also provides more than 60 other trace minerals (not found in chemical fertilizers) which have positive effects on soil biology and crop health. The balanced, moderate levels of nutrients in fish water provide a broad spectrum of fertilizer without the problems associated with excess application of any one nutrient. Fish water does not add salinity to the soil like chemical fertilizers do. It is excellent on every kind of plant and tree. Fish water is best used fresh and frequently because it is mild. Many believe that fish water is the key to a successful crop. Trace minerals improve the food nutrient capability of soil microbes, so the plant roots grow stronger and healthier. It is safe to use anywhere. Hydroponics Hydroponics is a natural fit with backyard fish farming. The roots of the plants absorb nitrate-rich water, which act as nutrient-rich plant food. These nitrates, which come from fish waste, would otherwise build up to toxic levels in the fish tanks and kill the fish. But instead, they serve as fertilizer for the plants. The hydroponic plants’ roots function as a biofilter, stripping ammonia, nitrates, nitrites and phosphorus from the water. Clean water is then circulated back into the fish tanks. Because fish waste is used as fertilizer, there’s no need for chemical fertilizers. The money and energy it would take to put those chemicals to work is saved. The high-nitrogen fertilizer generated through fish waste allows plants to grow lush. Lettuce, herbs, and greens, such as spinach, chives, chard, bok choy, basil and watercress have low to medium nutritional requirements and do well in direct aquaponics systems. Plants that thrive in heavily stock systems are bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The ratio of fish water to hydroponic product is 1:4. In other words, for every one part of water and fish, you will have four parts of plant and bed material. Aside from plants and fish, the other major component of aquaponics is the water itself. Carefully monitoring the ammonia level in the water is important to ensure a safe environment for the fish. How to Get Started Want to bring fish farming to your backyard food production? Backyard gardeners can set up an inexpensive aquaponics system using recycled materials and easily build a complete DIY system that can grow suitable quantities of fish because of the unique characteristics of tilapia. Cultivating plants and fish through aquaponics is both easy on the environment and on finances. Aquaponics systems don’t use any chemicals, and they require about 10 percent of the water used in regular farming. The systems are closed; that is, once they’ve been filled with water, only a small amount is introduced into the system thereafter due to evaporation. But how can a water-based system use less water than conventional farming? The answer is the continual reuse and recycling of water through naturally occurring biological processes. Basically, the waste from fish produces natural bacteria that convert waste such as ammonia into nitrate. This nitrate is then absorbed by plants as a source of nutrients. The basic principle of aquaponics is to put waste to use. Backyard fish farming offers an environmentally beneficial way to cultivate both fish and plants. Anyone can implement basic aquaponics into their backyard gardening. Whether you set up a system on your back patio, your apartment building roof, in your garage, or in your backyard, an aquaponics system can provide a sustainable food source for an entire family.

experienced again and again. This takes place right in our own thinking, our consciousness. All healing is pretty simple; it’s accepting that it sometimes takes effort. This is the purpose of the support systems offered in the Reading Room. Because this knowledge is totally exemplified by Jesus Christ, Mrs. Eddy named her discovery Christian. Because the Mind of Christ is consistently effective when correctly understood, she also named it Science (a systemized body of knowledge). Along with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the Reading Room and Bookstore contains many resources to help us learn this science. There are audio talks and lectures, pod casts for your computer, iPhones and mp3 players, music and articles on CDs and in book form. We also have biographies of Mary Baker Eddy by Christian Scientists and nonChristian scientists alike. We welcome you and will do all we can to speed you on your way to permanent health and happiness.
process actually sends your brain on a search for meaning. The left brain does not understand the context of the question, because it is open-ended and has no answer, so the right brain then takes over. The right brain has access to what scientists have called the Zero Point energy field. The Zero Point energy field is the point beyond time and space, beyond the rules, beyond the physical laws of the universe—where there is a pure reservoir of untapped potential as energy. If you can let go of your rules and expectations, you can reach into that field. In that moment you can pull some of that pure, universal, unlimited energy into your world, which can change your physical conditions right now. Miracles are possible in the next moment, and anyone can access that potential. We need to learn to play in a way that has an observable and reproducible outcome—so that the conscious mind has to pay attention, even if it doesn’t know what’s going on. This is accomplished by transitioning from imaginative play to virtual play. In imaginative play, you essentially make things up. You might imagine a particular outcome without actually experiencing it; maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t. With virtual play, you tap into a greater foundational reality and allow for an outcome that’s actually different—not merely imagined to be different. When your play becomes your reality, your every breath becomes a foundational exercise for transforming everything that you believe, see, feel, and experience. When you go beyond just seeing or imagining to actually experiencing or feeling an outcome in your body, you have engaged in virtual play. The exercise that follows will help you develop the ability to experience virtual play for yourself. Imagine Your Front Door This is a great practice to start with because almost everyone can do it successfully. Close your eyes and imagine your front door in as much detail as possible. Reach out and run your fingers over the surface. Is it rough or smooth? Is the paint peeling? Can you picture any unique characteristics of the hardware, such as spots of tarnish on the lock or handle? What colors do you see? Is the surface of the door warm or cool to the touch? Are there dents or scuffs around the frame? Write down your observations, capturing as much detail as you can. You may wish to compare your notes to the actual door, but remember there are no right or wrong answers. You may also try this exercise several days in a row, noticing what changes each time.

“Wait! That’s not the right key!” “Yeah. I don’t want to do this.” “But, you can see your daughter on the computer.” “If I want to see your mother, I’ll go visit. I have no use for this.” Patiently, my son finally got my father to operate the computer correctly so that he could see me as we spoke. Unfortunately, all I saw was the top of my dad’s head, and my son standing behind him trying his best to hide his frustration. As much as I try to keep up with it all, I’ve recently begun to feel like a high tech has-been. I don’t own a basic cell phone, let alone one that takes pictures, tweets, plays music and flushes the toilet. I still have a Walkman and just recently got rid of my old VCR. My son rolls his eyes when I wring my hands with worry after he changes my homepage and I can’t get the original one back. My Apple computer is over 10 years old; I rarely use the laptop I bought; and I still have a cassette player in my 1997, stick-shift truck. But I try. And so did my mother. The year after the camera fiasco, my brother decided to buy her an electric pasta machine since she loved to cook. I can still remember seeing her giddy reaction as she lovingly took it out of the box. She figured out how the gnocchi, sardi, cavatelli, rigatelli, fettuccine, ravioli, lasagna and spaghetti attachments all worked within an hour. She quickly learned how to manipulate the machine to adjust the thickness of her homemade dough within measurements that would impress a rocket scientist. She wore out that machine and many more that followed. Over the years, as we all sat around the table enjoying her delicious pasta, we knew just what we would be buying her for her next birthday.

“Birthing in a High Tech Civilization” continued from page 22
fetal or maternal distress. USA Today reporter Rita Rubin aptly calls dsytocia “failure to wait.” Cesareans entail many more risks to baby and mother than do vaginal births. A natural vaginal birth ensures the best possible entry into the world for baby, and the optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical experience for mother. Technology imparts the pregnant mother with new choices. We may be measuring our nutrition intake, or choosing in vitro fertilization or prenatal testing. Unfortunately, the power of technology can also work against a woman’s basic rights and her intuitive knowledge. Birth Plans Some women include in their birth plans that they do not want pain medication offered unless they request it. Some specify to not be coached to use arguably hazardous yet standardized precautionary techniques, such as bearing down and pushing the baby before the urge to push arises, or having her bag of waters artificially ruptured. Some birth plans instruct to wait until after mother and baby have bonded before performing routine medical procedures with the newborn. To allow for maximum inclusion and respect of your birth plan in a hospital, bring five to 15 copies to share with the various nurses and medical personnel who will be involved in your care. Whatever your circumstances, a doula can help navigate your birth through the high tech system. Usually the doula stays with you after the birth until you begin your next natural stage of mothering: breastfeeding. Simply having someone who understands the experience to be your ally assures a positive element to the birth experience. Ceremony The life cycle events of birthing and being born have been Hallmarked, mechanized, corporatized, politicized, and institutionalized, along with many other naturally occurring life forms and processes. One way to retain your humanity during birth planning is to have your beloveds organize a Blessingway, a spiritually-focused gathering in honor of the mother. In her book Blessingways: A Guide to Mother-Centered Baby Showers, author Shari Maser, CCE, explains, “The common thread among Blessingways is the use of ritual to celebrate the mother-to-be, to acknowledge the momentous impact of bringing a new baby into her family, and to support her through this transition.” The term “Blessingway” comes from a traditional Navajo ceremony. In popular culture, mothers receive gifts at fanciful celebratory baby showers. Many traditional peoples still adhere to taboos that prohibit gathering baby items, setting up a baby room, or naming a baby before birth. Drawing from your personal ancestral cultural heritage to hold a spiritually-centered baby shower concentrates your attention on the spiritual journey of your birth and has the potential to bring together your community’s strength around your birth and the welcoming of your child. Birthing can be healing and restorative. Always transformative, birthing is when a woman’s body acts as a vessel to form a passage from the spirit realms to the physical world. Empowered we embody the life-giver, and when we birth with intention, the worlds can come together. Wendy Kenin is a doula and mother of four in Berkeley, California. Beyond developing abstract art, I want to develop abstract thought. The art object is only a documentation of the evolution of an artist; the real worth and value are within, manifesting and furthering him into a greater, more responsive and changing being. My art is liberation from repetitive actions and pre-determined outcomes. The creative process enables me to transcend intention and to decipher the undercurrents of imagination. It is a venue for variation and personal discovery. Themes I address through my work are exploration, transformation, intuition and chance. These subjects are engaged through the use of diverse working methods, materials and applications with a focus on composition, color and space. The development of these elements produces art objectdocuments that are individual and accurate, portraying states of being through periods of time. These pieces reveal the ongoing search and discovery of new materials, modalities and forms. In relinquishing the variables of control I did not necessarily find control, but became accustomed to not having it. By not adhering to any style or theme, I achieved a more universal balance and openness in the work through the context of accident, confusion, and disassociation. These states request focus on what is essential. This is then actualized through instinct and intuition. I feel this allows for further questions into creative processing. Capsules are the current focus of my work. I begin with manufactured, recycled, and natural objects. Using a broad array of source material, I am able to cultivate a more thorough understanding of form. The variability of textures derived from diverse elements creates pronounced relief and rhythm. This series of work is both sculptural and painterly; making a distinct and innovative statement on form. How I work
“I am Clairvoyant (clear seeing), Clairsentient (clear feeling), and Clairaudient (clear hearing). I see, feel, and hear messages from your guides who are intimately familiar with you, your life, your lessons.
