Solutré was a hunting site for ever 25 000 years. Man of the Upper Palaeolithic (35 000 – 10 000 BC) trapped, killed and dismembered thousands of horses and reindeers, so leaving layers of bones. This accumulation of bones gave rise to a famous legend, which we know to be untrue, that the horses were driven over the cliff by their hunters. In fact, the herds of wild horses were ambushed and slaughtered at the foot of the cliff. Solutré have given the name “Solutrean” to a distinct culture of the Upper Palaeolithic (20 00 – 16 000 BC) which the marvellous “laurel-leaf” shaped flints have made famous. Cluny abbey The spiritual and artistic capital of the Middle Ages. Founded in 910, the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was governed by a line of exceptional abbots and at the height of its influence in the 12th century; it was at the head of an "empire" of some 10,000 monks. The main abbey church is quite simply breathtaking with the highest vaulted roof of the Romanesque world rising some 30 metres above the nave. The bell tower is equally impressive. Tournus abbey The Abbey church of Tournus represents one of the most revered sanctuaries of early Romanesque art. The abbey's interior creates a most surprising effect of light and shadow off of both the transept and large nave, as well as by the slender columns and the vault shaped by transverse arches. The abbey church also contains a crypt and the Saint-Michel Chapel. A number of medieval mosaics that illustrate the zodiac and the works of monks are now placed on display. Connected to the church via the confessional, the abbey's buildings comprise the cloister, chapter house, refectory and cellar. Price: free of charge for non-guided tour

Founded in 1840, it was the first Domaine to begin bottling at the property shortly after the Second World War. Furthermore, the focus on turning to wine each parcel of vines separately from a relatively early date allowed Ferret’s owners to identify the top climates (vineyard zones). The “Têtes de Crus” and Hors Classes identified during this process are a precursor to the stratification of the appellation system (which is currently being considered by the INAO). The property was managed by Jeanne, then Colette Ferret over the course of half a century, but now it is owned by Maison Louis Jadot, which hopes to continue working on its wines in the same spirit of perfectionism.
