Editor’s Note December is a very important time of the year because it’s the time where we are able to connect with and visit family and friends. From a business perspective, it’s an important time of the year because it’s the time of the year where profits can be obtained. Many companies operate in the red or negative flow all year until the holiday seasons begin then they start to go into the black or positive cash flow. Why do we not recognize and leverage the power of our economic vitality? This is not something we should take lightly. Whatever you can do, is greatly appreciated no matter how “insignificant” your purchase may seem to you, it has a great impact with business owners. One of our greatest challenges is identifying and understanding proper behavior as a Black consumer and/or as a Black business owner. Black consumers should hold the Black business owner to the same standard that the larger companies to while allowing for time for growth. Fortune 500 companies had to grow into their positions, none of them started there. This means that while we should always search for the best quality and value for hard earned dollar, we should afford the Black business owner the same leniency given to a major retailer or restaurant when they mess up and we quickly forgive them without always expecting “extra” in return. Black business owners should always strive to do what is ethical for their clients. Black business owners need to always position themselves to compete with the mainstream market when possible. If it’s not possible to compete with the mainstream market, then that should be a goal because we are not in business to save the world as a primary goal of being in existence. Black business owners have an obligation to lead the community in expansion, growth, and elevation. They can’t do it without the support of the consumer, and more importantly, the Black consumer. Please take the time to learn who the entrepreneurs are in your area and around Houston, Pearland, Friendswood, Missouri City, Spring, Cypress, and surrounding areas. Then go buy something from them. “When you want to go somewhere fast, go alone, when you want to go somewhere far, get a partner.”

A Woman’s True Wealth by Cadori Meet CaDori, she is the creative Genius behind a growing Empire. CaDori, which stands for a combination of the names Cathy, which is her birth name, Dougie, which is her late son’s nickname, and Doris which is her mom’s name, was established in 2016 after brainstorming for months about a business name that was different than anything on the web at the time. CaDori is a natural born leader with a kind giving spirit but enough life experiences to quickly identify anyone who tries to use or abuse her for any reason. Born Cathy Marshall, in Birmingham, Alabama, she is the oldest girl in a family of 13 siblings. She had to be a leader and a miniature adult as a child, who was oftentimes left to help raise her younger siblings with her oldest brother Fred when her parents would leave them at home, sometimes even overnight. Having to learn how to survive and thrive in a low income environment as a child taught her to work hard for a better life for herself and her family. With dreams of one day becoming a Nurse and even bigger dreams of owning her own businesses, CaDori has always wrote down her visions and dreams for many years and now those visions and dreams are becoming her reality! While in high school she would write short stories and poems just for fun. In June 2017, she self published her first book titled: Women Put Yourselves First And Be Happier. It’s an inspirational book for women and girls but men are welcome to read it as well. It was first premiered at Book Con and Book Expo in New York City, where she was alongside noted Authors-Kevin Hart and Charlamagne Tha God, both released new books this year as well. Her book chronicles her life and the lives of other women that she has known or come across in her lifetime and their life lessons in order to help guide women and girls to live happier lives without feeling like they have to be last in their own lives. To date CaDori has sold nearly one thousand copies on her own. She hopes to help change lives for the better and to let women know that whatever challenges they face that they are definitely not alone. Her goal is to reach millions of women each year and change their way of thinking which is the first step. “Once your mindset is different then real permanent change will occur.”A great way to think about putting yourself first in your own life is the example given when you first get on an airplane. The airline personnel instructs every passenger this message: “I’m the event of an emergency and your oxygen mask drops down from the overhead compartment, you Must-First Put YOUR oxygen mask on, then you can assist anyone else with putting theirs on.” Anyone else could be your child, your spouse, or your parents, etc...But, you Must put yours on First! Well, that same example is true in life. If you don’t put yourself first, then no one else will. Actually, if you put yourself first, then you certainly have more to give to others because your cup will be running over. I just love putting myself First now, because for many years, I did not. Another talent that CaDori possesses is the ability to motivate and uplift people. She has encouraged many people that she knows personally as well as complete strangers to complete their goals and pursue their passion over the years. Many would oftentimes tell her that she made them feel better almost instantly after talking with them because of her kindness and willingness to listen attentively to their issues. She has always been the type of person to see the good in people and embrace the differences in people. There’s no wonder she is a Life Coach 6 | Visit Black Houston Magazine

CaDori also founded her own charity, CaDori Helping Hands, in July 2017. Her charity helps people in need. She understands what people feel and need when they are at their lowest point both mentally and financially because she was once homeless many years ago, before she became a Nurse, while her two oldest daughters were very young. She stayed in a shelter for approximately one week. During that week she saw Life from a different angle and will never forget that helpless and hopeless feeling. “Establishing a charity helps me feel great inside because I love helping people in need.” To date CaDori Helping Hands charity has helped over 100 families in just 4 short months. Those families have been given assistance with everything from backpacks filled with supplies for school, baby diapers and wipes, personal care items, clothing, Hurricane Harvey Victims, and Turkeys and Hams for Thanksgiving. With plans to open a shelter one day and a soup kitchen, this woman shows no sign of slowing down in the charity department! “I am very excited about my future and the positive impact that I am making in the world” CaDori states with a smile as our conversation ended. About the Designer.... By Monique Lusk, Owner of By M. Lynette Designs A little about me….. I am the second oldest of four children and hand me downs were a must. My grandmother was the first woman to ever introduce me to fashion and glamour. Being a widow and never remarried, I remember looking in her closet and seeing lots of customer made suits and dresses, tones of hats and heels, fur coats and an uncountable amount of boxes with jewelry in them. I knew that I wanted to be like my grandmother: a beautiful home, two cars and very important people in and out of house. I remember feeling like I was important just being her granddaughter. She taught me that church, family, and education were required and to go after my dreams and heart’s desires…nothing more, nothing less. Let’s just say the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. My mother somehow saw the glitter in my eyes when I would walk in my grandmother’s closets. She too knew I would be fabulous one day. The women in my life were beautiful, independent and had enough self-esteem to last a lifetime. They were leaders and looked gorgeous while doing it. My style mavens are mostly Dorothy Dandridge and Diana Ross. I also love women like Diahann Carroll and Elizabeth Taylor. I loved when women were feminine and loved being dressed up even for breakfast. Being a single mother, I have always wanted to have beautiful pieces of clothing, but couldn’t afford them. I want to bring my passion and style to you while making it affordable. I actively listen to my clients to find out exactly how I can make their dreams come true with my custom clothing. I want them to know their needs and concerns are integral to the design process. I would love for them to know and trust that I am very attentive to their needs, wants, and desires. I want to make new fashion soul mates, not just meet new people and I want to treat them the way I want to be treated…. as a top priority….and make sure that they look fabulous while doing it! I did not forget the lessons that were taught to me when I was younger. Honestly, since I was about seven or eight years old, I knew that I wanted to help people look beautiful because people helped the woman heroes in my life. Holding on to my dreams as a young girl, I have always wanted to make beautiful clothing and that’s exactly what I do. Live my dream….. I am based in Houston, Texas however I am available for travel. I have been creating custom wedding dresses and evening gowns since 2007. For all business inquiries, I can be reached at Monique@VisitBlackHouston.com

December is here Already… Habari ghani? By I.I.I. J Muse
Winter solstice...21st Christ is born 25th winds chill, wildlife sleeps Umoja...the 26th six more fires to be lit Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujmaa and Nia first through fifth. Turning over fresh soil through Kuumba Ase, modupue, for spiritual gifts an important last 7 days of a 12th month meaning 10 a zawadi to my ancestors counting blessings of a calendar year’s end. drum beats invoke rhythms of a sacred mazao karamu from them to our hands to our children for a brand new day we the people, who come this far by Imani! Hallelujah! Ase! Harambee!
D
ecember ushers in the swift ending of the calendar year, as well as continues the energies of gratitude from November. Sagittarius carries over into Capricorn, as regenerating fire turns over new soil. As we usher in the mainstream holiday season and winter solstice, may we combine these energies in a manner that makes preparation festive! It is the holiday season indeed, in which many cultures partake in various celebrations and traditions that demonstrate their faith! I must admit that learning about the holiday traditions of other cultures makes me prouder of my own, seeing traces of my native culture embedded and re-coded in theirs. As autumn equinox is a time for harvest and gratitude, winter solstice is the season for planting and cultivating seeds to harvest in the spring. Winter solstice brings all inside, closer to warmth, closer to heart as Her earth’s outer temperatures drop to coldness. 29 days from this one, we will begin our 7 day Kwanzaa celebrations that will take us all the way into the new calendar year, and for many reasons, I couldn’t be more excited to use the fires from my Mishuma Saba to turn over new grounds in life! Let us all ground ourselves in the Umoja (unity) of our goals, using all we already have combined with the Kajichagulia (self determination) to see them through. 2017’s course of events this year brought the Ujima (collective work & responsibility) out of us all, and may we continue to maximize and build on using our unique Kuumba(creativity) to further define our Nia(purpose). As we go forth in this tradition, let us individually and collectively go deeper into the Nguzo Saba, and keep the candles of those principles burning in our hearts and spirits year ‘round, ever remembering we are a people of Imani(faith), the legacy of our culture. Know that the best zawadi(gift) to give to your self, community and ancestors is the will to embody Nguzo Saba always, and increase its meaning in your everyday lives. In doing so, the mazao(crops) of our Ujamaa(cooperative economics) will continue to be blessed and bountiful! Visit Black Houston Magazine |17
