Memorial Bench Statue Project Groundbreaking April 4th is a critical date in our history. April 4, 2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the “Beyond Vietnam” speech by Dr. King, which announced his opposition to the War in Vietnam at the historic Riverside Church in Manhattan, NY. Many fail to realize that it was on the anniversary of this sermon, April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated. Dr King died as a result of this stance and his ongoing advocacy for the underserved, which was reflected in Poor People’s Campaign that year. This date changed the trajectory of the movement for civil rights and economic rights for African Americans in this country. Because the Black Heritage Society was established to commemorate and ensure the heightened awareness of contributions of African Americans, such as Dr. King, the Society is honored to celebrate the April 4th date. The Society began in 1970 in reaction to the turning point of and new direction needed in the civil rights movement. The extension of the Dr. King Memorial Plaza is another project created by the Society to make sure that those who worked to improve the quality of life in our community are given the recognition they are due. The Society conducts this project and other many programs and seminars during the year to educate youth and those new to our area about the struggle that continues on behalf of the underserved and disadvantaged of our nation and the world. Each year, the Society celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of the dedication initiated by the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. of the Society as the official and licensed Houston organization honoring his birthday. The dedication was made by the Reverend King, Sr. during his personal visit to the Black Heritage Society commemoration in 1978. The BHS has continued its reflection events on the Dr. King holiday and during days preceding and near the actual anniversary. The designation of the Dr. King National Day of Service by Congress did not occur until 1994. Next year, 2018 will represent the 40th Annual Officially Authorized Celebration by the BHS. .
In 2014, the BHS established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project and unveiled one of Houston’s most precious sculptures here at MacGregor Park. The memorial honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a larger than life size statue and a chronicle of Dr. King’s life embedded with granite in the floors of the plaza along with historical quotes taken from his speeches. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project teaches about Dr. King’s commitment to bring justice to the disenfranchised. The planned expansion of the Memorial Project will embrace the importance of four additional persons who made a positive contribution to the world and the importance of educating the public about their work. In a continued effort to honor the peace and dignity of such a wonderful man, the planned Project will include, among other things, the expansion of the “Tree of Life” Reflection Area. It will add four (4) larger than life bench statues of major figures of our time. The first two of four are bench statues of Rosa Parks (Mother of the Civil Rights Movement) and Nelson Mandela (anti-apartheid revolutionary and former President of South Africa). Two other major icons will be similarly enshrined. The expansion project will also include a 6’ x 10’ granite wall that recognizes and honors many others who made outstanding contributions to both civil and human rights in America and around the world. The purpose of the “Tree of Life” Reflection Area is to compliment the Memorial Plaza by providing an area of peace and tranquility. The “Tree” remains a symbol that the struggle of our people still has “life” and will not be extinguished. It’s “life” has been threatened. It has been uprooted and has rebounded through turbulence inflicted upon it as it has adjusted to the challenges of our times. The Tree Reflection Area is dedicated to inspiring strength and steadfastness to all who visit it and to those who seek comfort in knowing that the difficulties placed upon our people in the struggle will be overcome. We, like the Tree, will stand victorious. The expansion of the Memorial Plaza near the “Tree of Life” is an appropriate connection of the past and the continuation of the “life” of the struggle into the future.
