Welcome to Blackpool

Welcome to Blackpool Blackpool Conference & Meetings Guide. The guide, the second of our new look publications, will give you an informed and educated view of what Blackpool has to offer to the business traveller.

Images: Le, Winter Gardens Dome. Top right, Tram Shelter on Blackpool Promenade. Both by Sean Conboy

In this guide we hope to take you on a journey, refreshing your views of the UK’s number one seaside destination. The guide includes some traditional, some unusual and some unique venues, no other destination can offer you so much! Our aim is to make your event as memorable as possible – allowing your delegates to remember the event and the purpose of their visit for a little longer than the journey home. If you want to keep it traditional that’s fine, we can help with that or if you’re looking for something a little bit different we can point you in the right direction; bringing a smile to your delegate’s faces doesn’t have to mean a party (although we can party if you want to!) - we can help you add a little bit of Blackpool to a seriously long day. Transporting your guests on a private tram from the venue to the hotel can help, taking them for drinks and fish and chip canapés on board also gives a little taste of the seaside. For the really

adventurous how about a private ride on the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach? If taken in the afternoon break this will surely wake up your group! Whatever your numbers we can help you find a venue to match your needs, we welcome in excess of 50,000 business tourism visitors each year and now, as many of the regeneration projects are nearing completion there really is no better time than to come and let the team show you round. Don’t let your perceptions of Blackpool stop you taking another look, Blackpool welcomes in excess of 14 million leisure visitors per year and the figures are growing annually. The committed team at VisitBlackpool would be delighted to take you on a tour showing you a destination that can offer a product to meet even the most demanding of tastes. Bringing Business back to the Seaside

6

www.visitblackpool.com/business

Blackpool is still the traditional seaside home to many conferences and events; we welcome just over 50,000 delegates each year, which brings in an income worth in excess of ÂŁ55m per year to the resort.

Bringing Business back to Blackpool

Contrary to some opinions the days of strolling along the promenade in a knotted hanky with a stick of Blackpool Rock and a Kiss Me Quick hat are long gone; this has been the out of date view of many seaside towns and the business tourism team in Blackpool are here to show you how the town has moved forward from this quaint and nostalgic image.

Images by Sean Conboy. Clockwise: Talbot Gateway, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Festival House

The history of the town is steeped in those fond memories and we have no intention of wiping those memories away, but we are here to show you how the town has evolved, how we have moved into the 21st century with ease and how our venues and hotels are living up to modern day expectations. Let the team change your perception and show you a town ready to take on the challenges of modern day MICE delegates. Blackpool can help make your event a special occasion for delegates and far from becoming a distant memory by the time they return to the office, let them feel inspired, invigorated and most of all enthusiastic about what lies ahead.

The Blackpool Coast Blackpool, situated between the Fylde and Wyre estuaries has over 6 miles of promenade, which has been the town’s main focus of regeneration. Five headland spaces, a new promenade and the new Spanish steps give visitors a welcome place to sit and enjoy the great views of the Irish Sea. On a clear day (and with excellent eye sight) some say you can see as far as the Isle of Man. The sunsets are truly magnificent and allow you to sit and relax while contemplating the day’s activity.

Blackpool Ambassador

Blackpool Ambassador Programme Could you have what it takes? The team in Blackpool are continually searching for Ambassadors, can you help? When bidding to bring an event to the resort we’re oen asked if we have an ambassador that can offer an impartial view of how Blackpool could be suitable for a particular event.

10

www.visitblackpool.com/business

How it works: If you attend events, sit on a committee or you’re a member of an association and would like your event to come to Blackpool we can help. The team can pull together a proposal from one or more venues, help with accommodation, subvention funding (subject to numbers and length of stay) and present all information to the organising body. Often all you have to do as an ambassador is give an impartial view of how you think the event would work coming to Blackpool.

If this is something you think you could do, give us a call and we’ll help you every step of the way, from the initial enquiry through to confirmation and beyond. Together we can help increase the number of business tourism events that choose Blackpool.

Unique and Unusual You really won’t find anywhere quite like it

www.visitblackpool.com/business

No other destination offers the choice of unusual and unique venues like Blackpool; from event spaces for 20,000 to intimate meetings for 10 we have a huge selection of venues that will make your event last long in the memory of your delegates.

Impress the board with a meeting at the top of The Blackpool Tower; sit round the table with a few additional guests from Madame Tussauds; enjoy team building events at Blackpool Zoo or the new High Ropes attraction situated at Stanley Park; the list is truly endless and no other destination offers so much unique choice! Even in our most traditional of venues we can help you add a little touch of sparkle, why not host a themed event?

The Golden Mile on Blackpool promenade is a magnet for leisure visitors; you can enjoy some of that seaside sparkle by adding a little magic to your business proceedings. Think about some circus acts to entertain during your coffee or lunch breaks or perhaps a clairvoyant to predict how the sales figures will shape up over the next few years! Add some popcorn and candy floss and wow, you have an event to truly remember.

Blackpool still welcomes a huge range of events and conferences each year. The Royal Pigeon Racing Association Show of the Year brings in excess of 15,000 people, the Royal Air Force Association comes to Blackpool bi-annually, and the North West Labour Party have once again chosen Blackpool as their destination of choice. No other destination can possibly host a range of events, conventions and conferences quite like Blackpool! www.visitblackpool.com/business

The Comedy Carpet Created by artist Gordon Young, the Comedy Carpet is a celebration of comedy on an extraordinary scale. Referring to the work of more than 1,000 comedians and positioned in front of The Blackpool Tower, the 2,200m2 work of art contains over 160,000 granite letters embedded into concrete, pushing the boundaries of public art and typography to their limits.

Eating & Drinking

Eating & Drinking Something to suit all tastebuds

Whatever your preference, Blackpool has a wide range of excellent eating and drinking establishments so expect to be spoilt for choice.

Eating out in Blackpool is easy; there’s a great selection of restaurants, bistros and cafés all offering something different, from traditional Italian trattorias to contemporary bistro style dining, to good old fish and chips, the choice is huge. Some of our guests like to make the most of their visit to Blackpool and venture out to our neighbours on the Fylde Coast.

Both St Annes and Lytham have a great selection of restaurants and bars and are only a short drive down the coast road. If you’re looking for a little end of the day relaxation with a pint or perhaps a G&T or intend to party the night away sipping a cocktail or two, there is no better way than sitting by the sea watching the sun set in the distance.

The Empress Grill Blackpool Winter Gardens has been back in public ownership for a number of years now and the promised refurbishment of “The most magnificent palace of entertainment in the world” is well underway. The refurbishment of the Winter Gardens has included the new Empress Grill, a beautiful restaurant situated in the very heart of the Winter Gardens. Available for private dining, party dining or general opening the restaurant offers a unique space for 75 people. The view down the Floral Hall means delegates don’t even have to leave the building.

Sean Conboy The Man behind the Lens

The conference team was delighted when local boy and renowned international photographer Sean Conboy agreed to feature on the front of our new conference and meetings guide. He is usually firmly fixed behind the lens of his camera and we are thrilled Sean agreed to be the focus of his own images.

Sean’s interest in photography started when his grandfather gave him his Cine Camera and projector at the age of 11, the seed was sown and Sean’s ambition and the foundations to become a professional photographer were firmly fixed in his mind. With the help of his grandfather Sean managed to buy his first Hasselblad camera at the age of 18, that first camera is now on display in Sean’s Blackpool office as a reminder of how it all began. Born in Blackpool and following an education at St Joseph’s Grammar School Sean started his career as a photographers assistant to Mr Norman Butler, Norman encouraged Sean to apply at Blackpool College, the photography course the college offered was the leader in the field and had almost 20 applications for every place – Sean secured his place and so a lifetime of photography began.

This page: The Winter Gardens Blackpool Burj Al Arab Dubia, Blackpool Grand Theatre

20

www.visitblackpool.com/business

As Sean’s particular interest in architecture and corporate work grew he realised this could take him all over

the world so he worked for a time in Miami but missing England and particularly the North West and with the advancement of communication technology it became clear clients aren’t really concerned with where you are based, just about the quality of the work so Sean made the decision to move back to the Fylde Coast. The great transport links, nearby airports and good quality of life offered a great base to work from. Sean says “My favourite area of work is definitely interior photography, particularly large challenging spaces, having learnt my cra in the era of transparency film I use light to control the scene to my advantage, so the picture is captured in the camera rather than being fixed later in photo shop. This allows me to use my Broncolor flash lighting system to create mood, depth and interest in the spaces. Some Blackpool interiors such as The Tower Ballroom, The Grand Theatre and Winter Gardens can be very challenging to photograph but at the same time can lead to some stunning images. Over the years I have been an ambassador for

both Hasselblad and Broncolor leading workshops and presentations around the world to fellow professional photographers. The Blackpool images I show oen receive the most interest and questions, in fact at talks in London many UK photographers don’t even realise these spaces are in the UK! When they hear it’s Blackpool they’re usually amazed”.

Sean has recently updated his website (designed by 2ammedia.co.uk), and the reaction he’s received to some of the images on the site has left him in no doubt that high quality photography is vital to changing the perception people have of a destination. Sean says “A good photographer can capture the location in its best light and give people a reason to visit, whether that is for business, pleasure of both. Blackpool conference venues really stand out in the uniqueness of the interior spaces, aer a recent talk in London I was approached by a Russian who wanted to buy a framed copy of my Tower Ballroom image, this chap was from St Petersburg which has some of the best ornate interiors in the world – but it doesn’t have the Tower Ballroom! Which he felt was the best ballroom in the world. When my clients and students see the Winter Gardens Baronial and Spanish Suite they love the images and want to know where they are, they have a certain kitsch charm and are absolutely unique.” Sean was delighted and honoured this year to receive a Direct Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society. This is one of the oldest and most prestigious photographic societies in the world. Founded by Sir Henry Fox Talbot, one of the inventors of photography – the patron of the society is Her Majesty the Queen. Recipients have to be invited to be put forward for a Direct Honorary Fellowship and only one or two are awarded each year.

The Blackpool tower

The Blackpool Tower Meetings for everyone

Whatever your age the Blackpool meeting room offer is undeniably unique, with a selection of venues to excite even the most seasoned of traveller.

If the height and the lift make heading to the top seem a little daunting, The Blackpool Tower has a number of other areas within the building that are truly mesmerising; The Blackpool Tower Circus is the ideal venue for events requiring a 360 degree audience setting, seating for 1300 people makes this venue ideal for larger events, product launches or concerts. The Blackpool Tower Ballroom, a beautiful venue for presentations, gala dinners and awards ceremonies can seat up to 750 people. The Ballroom has in recent years become very popular with a new audience of Strictly Come Dancing fans. The Blackpool Tower has been taken over each Strictly season for a live show allowing the beauty of the ballroom to be seen by a whole new audience.

Even the competing celebrities can’t wait to get to Blackpool, seen as the high point of the annual competition everybody wants to ‘get to Blackpool’ Hosting a meeting or an event or even a drinks reception at the very top of The Blackpool Tower is a thrill whatever age bracket you fall into. Blackpool’s traditional conference offer has changed and we need to show you how Blackpool’s now ready for the traveller of the 21st century, with a host of unique venues unlike anywhere else in the country. Winter Gardens Blackpool

Winter Gardens Blackpool Love to Dance Dancing has been at the heart of Blackpool’s events calendar since the early 1900’s The Winter Gardens hosts one of the most popular dance events in the annual dance calendar. The Blackpool Dance Festival hosts up to 5000 people over 10 days each May, bringing in dancers from all over the world with a huge number travelling from China, Japan Germany, Italy and the USA. In the early days there were only three sequence dances included in the competition, these days there are all types of dancing including ballroom, sequence, modern and latin American. The competitions are of course the main event but these days an exhibition and retail sales also take up a vast part of the Winter Gardens. Dresses are the main focus with a huge amount of sequins feathers and tulle on display.

Fylde and Wyre Just a stones throw from Blackpool shores you will find Fylde and Wyre. Both of which have so much to offer whether it be stunning views or a relaxing drink.

Fylde Relax and watch the world go by

Just to the south of Blackpool sits the area of Fylde, offering a great alternative to the hustle and bustle of Blackpool and its attractions. Lytham, St Annes by the Sea and all the beautiful villages in the surrounding area offer a slower pace to those looking for a little relaxation.

Lytham has some great places to just sit and watch the world go by. Sip on a glass of wine in the main square and watch the sun set over the estuary. The town has a very cosmopolitan feel with a vibrant selection of bars and restaurants. If shopping’s more your choice of relaxation there’s a great selection of small specialist shops offering everything including gifts, specialist food shops, a department store to an artisan bakery. Sandwiched in between Blackpool and Lytham, St Annes on Sea not only has a great mix of bars and restaurants but also has a lovely pier, stretching out into the Irish Sea. If you’re looking for a little sport and golf is your method of relaxation the surrounding area boasts some of the region’s best golf courses. To the north of Blackpool lies the area of Wyre, situated between the Irish Sea and the Forest of Bowland, Wyre offers some of the most beautiful and varied coastline in the country including award winning beaches and amazing views over Morecambe Bay.

The Victorian splendour of Fleetwood is a real treasure and we’re sure you’ll love the traditional charm on offer. Make your way to the seafront and enjoy the amazing views or alternatively take a look at Marine Hall; set in its own gardens this prominent art-deco building has been the centre of entertainment for many years and offers a year round programme of shows and concerts for all. If you prefer a little shopping you need to add a trip to Freeport Fleetwood Outlet Village to the itinerary; this shopper’s paradise is the perfect place to pick up a bargain, have a spot of lunch and take a look at the boats in the marina. A to B and all the bits in between We’ve made it really easy to get around in Blackpool whether you’re travelling from the train station to your hotel or from the hotel to the conference venue. Wherever your final destination may be there’s always an easy option available for you. If you arrive by train local taxis will be available outside the station to move guests to the venue of choice. Whatever time your delegates choose to arrive there will be plenty of transport to assist. If delegates are arriving in large numbers we can arrange for dedicated bus or coach transport from the station to any of our venues or hotels. Alternatively, a short walk to the promenade offers the option of using the new tramway service. This is the perfect way to commute along Blackpool’s promenade; whether your accommodation is North or South the new style Bombardier trams will make sure everybody arrives stress and hassle free. The promenade route has been totally transformed in recent years; with over £100m worth of investment the tramway has been a key part of Blackpool promenade’s regeneration plan.

The team at VisitBlackpool can negotiate transport tickets for your visitors, making sure all they have to think about is getting on and getting off! If the modern style isn’t your preference and you’d prefer an older style heritage tram we can help sort that for you. Perhaps you’d like to take your guests on a private hire heritage tram on the way to a dinner venue. This would be the ideal way to impress your guests and at the same time enjoy reception drinks and canapés on route, or alternatively if it’s a more relaxed evening take a tram ride and at the same time treat your delegates to a traditional seaside supper of fish and chips. Blackpool Transport has recently welcomed a fleet of new Mercedes Citaro buses; all are 12 metre 1 door full low floor throughout with the latest fuel and energy efficient Euro 6 engines. Trimmed in E Leather with wood effect flooring and free WiFi and mobile charging points for customers, these new buses will offer a modern alternative to travel around Blackpool. To be accredited or not to be accredited To ensure your stay in Blackpool is exactly what you want it to be we would encourage all our guests to look for the quality assessment signs before you choose an accommodation provider.

All of the accommodation providers in our guide have been independently assessed for quality by VisitEngland, the AA or local assessors if they have chosen the entry level scheme. Please be aware that ratings can and do change throughout the year.

To confirm a rating please visit www.qualityintourism.com or www.theAA.com When choosing your accommodation we would urge you to look for the blue quality rose, the gold AA plaque or the entry level assessment sticker.

Places that 'go the extra mile' to make your stay a special one, may achieve a Gold or Silver award in addition to their star rating

The Breakfast Award is given to those hotels and B&Bs who achieve exceptionally high scores for their breakfast.

Guest Accommodation categories: Guest Accommodation tends to be personally run by the owners.

Hotel categories: Hotels are fully licensed properties offering a dinner service and all rooms must be en-suite or offer a private bathroom.

Guest Accommodation/Houses is the category which encompasses anything from one-room bed and breakfast to the larger establishments found in Blackpool and may offer dinner and be licensed. Bed and Breakfasts generally accommodate no more than six people. It’s like staying as a special guest in someone’s home. For self-catering accommodation the layout, design and the range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and most importantly, the cleanliness.

Hotels are serviced accommodation providing hotel services with a minimum of 5 bedrooms. Metro Hotels are found in city/town centres, offering full hotel services, but no dinner, and will be within easy walking distance of a range of places to eat. Budget Hotels are part of a chain of branded hotels offering clean and comfortable en suite facilities, 24 hour reservations and a consistent level of facilities. They are not awarded a star rating. Please note that accreditation can be awarded by either the AA or VisitEngland in any category

New for 2015 Blackpool Approved Entry Level Accreditation Scheme. This new entry level scheme has been introduced for 2015 (accredited by VisitEngland). The scheme ensures that a property is ‘safe, legal & clean’ the property meets all requirements with regards to health and safety and demonstrates good customer practice.

Accessible Accommodation

Proprietors of accommodation taking part in the National Accessible Scheme have gone out of their way to ensure a comfortable stay for guests with hearing, visual or mobility needs. These places are full of extra touches to make everyone’s visit trouble free, for example handrails, ramps and step free entrances (ideal for buggy and wheelchair users), level access showers and colour contrasts in the bathrooms.

Members of staff may have attended a disability awareness course and will know what assistance will really be appreciated. When you see one of the appropriate National Accessible Scheme logos you can be sure the accommodation and the core facilities have been thoroughly assessed against demanding criteria.
