EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

From Champagne and oysters to traditional fish and chips, Blackpool has it covered from the traditional to the gastronomically swanky. With hundreds of cafes, restaurants, take-aways and bars, there is an enormous variety to suit not just every taste but every pocket. And as the day comes to a close, Blackpool offers entertainment to suit every individual all year round. West End shows, ballet, opera and art exhibitions sit alongside gigs from the latest boy bands, comedians and tribute acts.

COMEDY CARPET After you arrive in the resort head for a stroll down the Promenade to get your bearings and soak up that unique atmosphere while marvelling at the gag-tastic Comedy Carpet. It includes the work of more than 1,000 comedians and comedy writers from the days of musical hall right up to today’s stand-up greats. “Garlic Bread” anyone?

THE BLACKPOOL TOWER

After that, call in at the majestic Blackpool Tower Ballroom and enjoy a quick two-step. Blackpool It’s a family affair Entertaining three children aged one to 11 can be a tricky business on holiday. But there's something for everyone in Blackpool, from rollercoasters to water slides and clowns to sea creatures, as this family trip testifies: And with the Blackpool Resort Pass a one-stop ticket to all the amazing attractions - we made sure the whole family got to enjoy their favourite experiences during our seaside mini-break. For more information on the Blackpool Resort Pass turn to page 10. The sun was shining on our first day, so we headed straight to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. It was easy to push our 21-month-old son, William, around the amusement park in his pram - although he wasn't in it for long after seeing all the fun rides at Nickelodeon Land. The staff were really helpful, pointing out the best places to leave the pram by the side of the rides. The water boats on Dora's World Voyage were magical and William even braved a trip high in the sky in the hot air balloons of Diego’s Rainforest Rescue. For seven-year-old Gracie, rollercoasters The Blue Flyer and Nickelodeon Streak were a real hit while my husband took daredevil Sophia, 11, on The Big One,

Infusion, and the Pleasure Beach’s latest ride Red Arrows Skyforce which lets you spin in the air in your own cockpit. The facilities were great with spacious baby changing rooms and different restaurants for lunch, which we enjoyed while watching the spectacular Dancing Water Show. The next day we got up early to go to the Sandcastle Waterpark. William and I splashed around in the shallow waters while my husband took the girls on the slides, with Aztec Falls, where you plunge into an enclosed bowl, the Masterblaster - the world's longest indoor rollercoaster waterslide - and the Sidewinder quickly becoming their favourite water slides. Then we had a fabulous afternoon meeting our favourite celebrities at Madame Tussauds; especially Ant and Dec in the I’m A Celebrity themed area which has an interactive maze and even a Bush Tucker Trial!

It’s a Family affair

The next day we visited SEA LIFE Blackpool, which is great for all ages. We left William’s pram in the buggy park and let his little legs explore. He loved being able to get so close to all the fish, pretending to tickle the sharks’ stomachs as they swam above us in their tunnel and coming face to face with Big Daddy, the giant Japanese Spider Crab. There were baby changing facilities, an indoor picnic spot and even a play area at the end - just in case the children still have energy to burn off! As Illuminasia is only a five-minute walk from SEA LIFE we finished off the afternoon with a trip to the world’s largest indoor illuminations experience. It's a visual feast for little ones!

Visiting Blackpool wouldn't be complete without a trip to the famous Blackpool Tower so, after leaving the pram in the handy buggy park, we headed to The Blackpool Tower Circus as our last day holiday treat. It was a thrilling show packed with heart-in-mouth highwire stunts, gymnasts performing energetic plunges, flips and somersaults and the Super Bowl Flyers sky-walking around the edge of a gigantic turning wheel. The children loved the stars of the show, clowns Mooky and Mr Boo, who brought plenty of circus magic with their slapstick humour as well as the NYPD Globe Riders who performed dare devil moves in a huge metal ball. And we just had enough time for another must-see the top of the Tower and walking over the 5cm thick glass SkyWalk. We all braved it, except my husband which means we'll just have to come back to Blackpool again! Blackpool Illuminations More than just light Blackpool Illuminations – ‘The Greatest Free Light Show on Earth’ – has just got better.

For more than 100 years Blackpool’s world famous Lights have drawn millions of people to the resort. And like the town itself – whose proud motto is ‘Progress’ – this historic and enduring attraction continues to move with the times and is more relevant and entertaining than it has ever been.

Thanks to more than £2 million of investment from the Coastal Communities Fund, 2015 saw the debut of a wonderful and electrifying new attraction which simply took our visitors’ breath away. LightPool saw The Blackpool Tower transformed into a sea of light, colour and sound as a stunning digitally mapped, multi-media show was projected onto this iconic structure. Utilising state-of-the-art digital mapping techniques, bespoke moving images are

projected on to the building’s seaward fascia, allowing it to be viewed from the Tower Festival Headland accompanied by specially designed audio to enhance this new lighting experience. Integrated with the projection show on The Blackpool Tower building is new digital lighting between Central and North Piers on the Promenade as well as on the many streets throughout the town centre, while the Birley Street ‘Brilliance’

More than just light

installation has been re-energised with the creation of a new sound and light event space with related programming and events throughout the Illuminations period.

Of course, the only way to fully enjoy our Illuminations and breath-taking new LightPool extravaganza, is to get out of your car and stroll along the Promenade and into the town centre on foot.

The Grundy Art Gallery has also been transformed with contemporary lighting installations as part of the LightPool project, while the historic ‘Welcome’ arches return at both the North and South ends of the Promenade.

And to make sure you (and more than three million people who visit the Lights each year) get the best experience possible, we have recruited a team of new Resort Ambassadors. All have been trained to WorldHost standard

and tour the town to provide all the help and advice you need. Come and have an illuminating experience at the Blackpool Illuminations and LightPool festival which shine nightly from 2 September to 6 November 2016. *The Coastal Communities Fund is funded by the Government with income from the Crown Estate’s marine assets. It is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of UK Government and the Devolved Administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Spark at LightPool £2m of funding from the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund has sparked the transformation of Blackpool’s iconic Illuminations. In 2015, it helped create a host of stunning new lighting features on the Promenade and town centre, with a specially commissioned 3D projection show on the front of The Blackpool Tower building as the main attraction. Watch out for brand new projection shows in 2016.

Blackpool’s Back Blackpool’s Back – and so is Oliver, the star of our show! For the past two years, Oliver has played the lead role in our TV advertisement which celebrates everything that the new-look Blackpool has to offer – including the biggest selection of branded visitor attractions outside London as well as some of the country’s most spectacular free events. But don’t just take Oliver’s word for it – come and see for yourself!

Paint the town Red The world famous airborne daredevils – and firm favourites at Blackpool’s annual air show – are the inspiration behind the resort’s newest thrill ride. There are few more breath-taking sights than the Red Arrows in full flight over the Golden Mile. Spectators – young and old – stand in jaw-dropping awe as the Royal Air Force’s world famous aerobatic display team do what they do best – thrill crowds with their close formation flying, stunning loops and breath-taking rolls. There can simply be few places better to see the Red Arrows go up, down and round-and-round amid the patriotic red, white and blue of their smoke trails than here in Blackpool.

Paint the Town Red

And it is not just the crowds at our annual and historic two-day free air show who would agree… just ask the pilots. Squadron Leader David Montenegro, Red 1 and Team Leader of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, said: “The Red Arrows have had a long association with Blackpool – first displaying there in 1969. Since then, the team has always received a wonderful reception and The Blackpool Tower provides an amazing, and well-known, landmark in many of the images featuring the Red Arrows on our visits. “More recently, we had the pleasure of carrying out a display to coincide with the opening of the Skyforce Red Arrows ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in May 2015. “At the 2015 Air Show tens of thousands of people had the opportunity to see the team perform and it’s an honour to fly in front of the Blackpool public and both represent the United Kingdom and showcase the Royal Air Force.”

The Red Arrows will celebrate their 52nd season in 2016. Only a select few aviators have sat in those famous red jets down the years, as only the best are chosen to turn their expert military flying skills to entertaining millions every year around the world. Blackpool hosted the UK’s first official air show in 1909 and now the event is staged annually with amazing aerobatic stunts and fly-bys from some incredible aircraft new and old. As well as the Red Arrows, regular visitors to our skies include the incredible Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Lancashire-built Eurofighter Typhoon and the daredevil Breitling Wingwalkers. Last year’s show saw a Blackpool first with the historic Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress – the legendary US bomber from the Second World War – wowing the crowds.

Hollywood Calling

Hollywood Calling Top Hollywood director Tim Burton loves Blackpool so much he shot his latest blockbuster in the resort…..and what’s more is that he would come back again in a shot. He loves it so much that he was invited to switch on the Blackpool Illuminations in 2015 and didn’t hesitate in accepting the invitation. But what is it that makes Blackpool so special in a movie maker’s eyes? Quite simply, filming in Blackpool is huge. Over the last three years more than 150 film crews have spent time in the resort but it’s not a new thing. Film crews have been coming to Blackpool for years – who remembers Funny Bones, shot in 1995, or Bhaji On The Beach back in 1993? There was even the silent movie Hindle Wakes all the way back in 1927. But back to Mr Burton and it is quite clear that this legendary film maker is a Blackpool fan. In 2012 he was in town to film the music video ‘Here With Me’ for American rock stars, The Killers, using locations at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, The Blackpool Tower Ballroom and Dungeon and the wonderful beaches of the resort. This was big…but he then came back again in 2015 with the full Hollywood shebang as he filmed new movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with A-list stars including Samuel L Jackson, Asa Butterfield and Eva Green. And why?

30

www.visitblackpool.com

Well in his own words: “I love Blackpool, I’d love to do another film here. It’s an amazing place. It’s a place when I first came here it affected me so greatly. There’s something very special about this atmosphere and there’s only one Blackpool.”

50

years of filming in Blackpool

1. A Taste of Honey: Released in 1961 with scenes shot in Blackpool.

So that’s Blackpool hitting big screens across the world in 2016, being seen by millions of people and what’s more Mr Burton will hopefully be back again soon. And he’s not on his own. Earlier in 2015 acclaimed British actor Timothy Spall spent several weeks in Blackpool filming the dark film AWAY with co-star Juno Temple and in 2013 a number of scenes from The Harry Hill Movie were filmed in Blackpool.

2. Coronation Street: Numerous episodes from 1961 to present day. The featured Roy and Hayley storyline of 2014 won the numerous awards at the National Television Awards, with scenes shot in Blackpool.

But it’s not just films. Oh no, any soap opera fan worth their salt can remember that fateful day when Coronation Street’s Alan Bradley met his maker as he chased Rita Fairclough across the tramlines. There’s even an official Blue Plaque on The Strand Hotel on the Promenade to mark it as the location where it happened.

5. The Parole Officer: Released in 2001 and starring Steve Coogan.

In recent years Coronation Street has been to Blackpool virtually every year to film some of their most memorable storylines. And then there’s TV dramas, advertising campaigns (remember those pesky meerkats?), children’s TV shows, documentaries and even music videos. So, next time you’re in Blackpool, keep an eye out for those camera crews because you just might find yourself strolling on to a film set!

3. Bhaji on the Beach: BAFTA nominated film released in 1993. 4. Funny Bones: Released in 1995 this multi-award winning film starred Jerry Lewis and comedian Lee Evans.

6. Blackpool: TV series ran for one season in 2004 starring David Morrissey and David Tennant. The show was BAFTA and Golden Globe award nominated. 7. The Magnificent Seven: BBC drama released in 2005 and starring Helena Bonham Carter. 8. Nowhere Boy: John Lennon biopic released in 2009 starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas. The film was BAFTA, British Independent Film Awards and Empire UK Awards nominated. 9. Robbie Williams: Advertising Space music video released in January 2009 set solely in Blackpool.

10. The Killers: Here With Me music video released in December 2014 and directed by Hollywood legend Tim Burton. The video features iconic Blackpool landmarks such as the Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Tower Ballroom and the beach. 11. The Harry Hill Movie: Released in 2013 and starring Harry Hill, Julie Walters, Sheridan Smith and Matt Lucas: It was shot across the resort in numerous attractions. 12. Away: Movie awaiting release and starring the highly talented Juno Temple, Timothy Spall and Matt Ryan. 13. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children: Hollywood blockbuster set for release winter 2016. The movie was directed by Tim Burton and stars Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench and was part filmed in and around Blackpool Tower. 14: Strictly Come Dancing: The iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom staged the grand final of the BBC prime-time show in 2011 and now regularly hosts the midway episode. 15. Royal Variety Performance: The Opera House staged a star-show in front of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 2009 with guest appearances by Bette Midler, Michael Buble and Lady GaGa. Music Trail There is simply no town in the UK which is more magical and musical. Blackpool continues to be top of the pops when it comes to drawing massive music stars.

We have a proud history and our gig guides over the years have read like a Who’s Who of pop royalty. From such historic greats as Frank Sinatra and The Beatles to the massive bands of today including The Killers and Blur, fans have flocked to our venues to catch legendary concerts. And Blackpool prides itself on always offering acts and venues to suit every genre – no matter your music taste.

Whether it is an up and coming band, singer or an international super group, we can proudly boast we have it all. Legendary divas such as Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and Dusty Springfield, to national treasures like Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields all brought the house down by the seaside. Tony Bennett, Josef Locke, Enrico Caruso, Duke Ellington, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, Frankie Vaughn, Dickie Valentine and Rod Stewart all had the girls swooning as they rattled through their hits here. And if rock and roll is your thing the Rolling Stones, Queen, Oasis, Radiohead, The White Stripes and our very own Pet Shop Boys have rocked the town, while solo stars Morrissey, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and Ed Sheeran have played some of the most memorable gigs in recent years.

Music Trail

Oh yes, and if modern pop princes and princesses are your thing, One Direction and Little Mix have both played sell out nights here. The Vaccines, Blur, Rudimental, Will Young, Union J and Blackpool’s very own Rae Morris were just some of the names to appear in 2015, while the annual Rebellion punk weekend and Blackpool Rocks dance festival have brought the biggest and best stars to town. So you see, whether its hip-hop, hot rock, chill-out, pop opera, rock, swing, techno, lo-fi, classical or just relaxing to hits from whatever era you like, Blackpool prides itself on having it all!

The Beatles Trail The Beatles – the biggest band in the history of music – played Blackpool no fewer than eight times at the height of Beatlemania. The Fab Four rocked sell out shows at the Queen’s Theatre (where it was so packed outside in 1963 John, Paul, George and Ringo had to enter via a skylight) as well as the Opera House and ABC Theatre. The Queen’s and ABC are no longer with us, but the wonderful Opera House – where the boys brought the house down twice in 1964 – still hosts massive worldwide stars. If you look carefully enough (from Adelaide Street) you can still see the fire escape where this iconic picture of the Fabs was taken. The Beatles connection is not confined to legendary gigs. John Lennon lived in the resort (Ivy Avenue, South Shore) for two months with his father in the 1940s. John’s father decided to emigrate to New Zealand, but, as legend has it, his son decided to go back home to Liverpool and live with his mother, then his auntie. It is fair to say The Beatles may never have formed had this young boy opted to leave for a new life on the other side of the world. A pretty big decision made here in Blackpool then! So if you are a fan of The Beatles, get a Ticket To Ride and head off on this unique Magical History Tour of the Fylde Coast! The Beatles

Then there is St Stephen on the Cliffs, the Anglo-Catholic Parish Church at North Shore, which contains a unique Actors Chapel. Among the famous theatrical stars who attended and whose names can be found on the donors’ plaques are Ivor Novello, Gracie Fields, Mae West and George Formby.

Blackpool Tower: The Sky’s the Limit The Blackpool Tower has proudly stood as the iconic symbol of the resort for 122 years – and she has never looked better!

The Blackpool Tower

It has endured the elements, changing fashions and an ever-changing world – but The Blackpool Tower continues to be one of the most loved and most recognisable landmarks in the world. And aer a multi-million pound, decade-long restoration programme this wonderful beacon of Blackpool is back to her best. “She has not looked as good as she does today, since the day she was opened to the public for the first time in 1894,” says Tower General Manager Kate Shane. “She looks fabulous.”

Visitors to Blackpool over the last nine years will have seen scaffolding around The Tower’s structure as workmen lovingly took the 518ft tall structure back to its original steel and iron work, stripping away decades of paint. The result is simply stunning – and the fresh look is matched by the many other innovations and attractions within the Tower building which make the historic structure as relevant today as it was when it first opened. Leading attraction operator Merlin Entertainments has created a number of 21st century features which beautifully complement such historic ones as The Blackpool Tower Circus and The Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

There is the stunning 4D SkyWalk, which takes you on an interactive, hi-tech journey that calls on all your senses, the breath-taking Tower Eye – which gives stunning views across the North West – and the frights of The Blackpool Tower Dungeon. The famous Ballroom – as regularly seen on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing – attracts more than 300,000 people a year while The Blackpool Tower Circus is set for a special anniversary. “It is 25 years since the Endresz family took over performing the shows in the circus and they are now regarded as one of the top five circus families in the world,” added Kate. “Mooky the Clown is such a recognisable face of Blackpool and he, and the superb acts featured, continue to entertain huge crowds with a high quality show which every generation adores.” As for the enduring popularity of the Tower, says Kate: “People love the Tower. They love to go to the top, they love the fantastic entertainment inside – we really do have something for everyone. Come and see for yourself. Here’s to another 122 years!”

Friends of Stanley Park The Friends of Stanley Park and Salisbury Woodland are a group of enthusiastic volunteers who care about two of Blackpool’s favourite green spaces. We are a friendly group who work, with the co-operation of Blackpool Council, to make the park as attractive and interesting as possible. Our work is to unite both public and private enterprises to help promote and protect the park and woodland. We run the Stanley Park Visitor Centre and put events on the Bandstand each Sunday in summer as well as raising funds for other projects.

With low, as well as high wires, the facility is suitable for anyone aged five years and up and is a great place for everyone to enjoy. www.blackpoolhighropes.co.uk tel: 01253 478474 BOOK NOW quote BHR16 & receive 10% discount Pay and Play Terms and Conditions apply

Getting around Blackpool

Getting around Blackpool

Take a stroll down the promenade, hop on a bus to Stanley Park or catch one of our Blackpool trams. However you prefer to travel around resort we have it covered.

For more information about cycle routes and to hire a bike in advance visit www.blackpool.gov.uk/cycling

Car and taxi

trams

Blackpool makes a trip to the resort by car easier than ever. Simply park in one of the many car parks available within walking distance of our main attractions and head into town. Parking is from as little as £2.50 for two hours. Taxis are available from Blackpool North Station as well as around the town centre. There are also taxi ranks from which you can hire a private taxi to take you around the resort.

It has never been easier to travel across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast than on a Blackpool tram. The frequent and reliable light railway service provides energy efficient travel along the coastline between Starr Gate and Fleetwood, giving access to all the main attractions along the promenade. The integrated Blackpool1 ticket gives you unlimited use of the trams (excluding heritage trams) and Blackpool Transport bus network.

For car park locations please visit www.visitblackpool.com/travel/parking

Bikes There’s nothing better than feeling the sea breeze in your hair as you pedal along the promenade. The promenade provides a unique route with panoramic views of the beautiful coast and easy access to the many famous attractions along the Golden Mile. There’s also two cycle explorer routes that take you from the promenade inland to Stanley Park and Blackpool Zoo.

Yellow bikes are available for hire on the promenade and at Blackpool Council Leisure Centres.

An adult Daysaver costs £4.50* with an under 16s child Daysaver costing £2.00*. Family tickets £10.00.

Buses Blackpool’s buses connect most hotels to the main resort attractions with a regular service making getting around a doddle. You can get timetables and discounted Blackpool1 tickets from the Blackpool Transport Travel centre on Market Street (open daily) behind the Town Hall (next to BHS). Here are some of the services to the major attractions: Promenade attractions: 1, 5, 7, 10, 11, 14, 17 Blackpool Pleasure Beach: 1 Sandcastle Waterpark: 1 George Bancroft Park and climbing walls: 5 The Blackpool Tower and Circus: 1,5, 7, 10,11,14, 17, 68 Stanley Park: 16
