Brescia where the heart of nature beats.
You will find more in woods than in books. The trees and the rocks will teach you things that no teacher will tell you. Bernardo di Clairvaux
Recent years have seen an incredible surge in enthusiasm and interest for the scenery of the Brescia mountains and valleys. Proof of this lies in the many events linked to their promotion and enhancement. This guide, “Trails in the Brescia area – Excursions in the province of Brescia”, takes you on some of the most wonderful outings into the natural heritage of the Brescia countryside and mountains. It suggests routes suitable not only for “expert hikers” but also, thanks to notes and tips on behaviour, for all those who, in complete safety and with respect for the environment, want to discover these beautiful places as “newbies” or with their family.

Convinced that knowledge, enhancement and protection are the key to a truly harmonious relationship between man and the environment, provincial administration has undertaken to put in place initiatives that raise awareness and cultivate a deep respect for our territory. Happy reading and happy hiking.

Introduction

BEHAVIOUR and advice Some advice will sound obvious but our experience leads us to stress that this is not the case. Respecting nature for example, in particular not leaving your rubbish, (waste collection is difficult in the mountains) and not picking flowers (not even the unprotected ones) so that everyone can admire them in their natural setting. Use hiking maps (1:25000 or 1:50000 scale). Where possible, set out early in the morning to avoid unexpected bad weather as storms in the mountains generally arrive in the afternoon. Early hikes also mean time for res-
cue in the daylight should anything happen. A forecast of rain does not always mean you have to cancel your hike, even if, especially in the high mountains, rapid changes in the weather, even in summer, increase danger. Rain means poorer visibility, greater potential for slipping, mud sliding on paths, temperatures close to zero. In any case, before setting out it is a good idea to know where you are going, check out trail conditions and where any mountain refuges are for possible stops. Excursions on your own bring other problems with them. We highly recommend you always tell someone where you are headed and your intended route, which must then be followed without any shortcuts. If you witness an incident or intercept a signal for help, the number to call for assistance is 112. The rescue operators will require the following information: • name and surname of the person requesting help; • exact time and location of the incident; • type and dynamics of the incident: fall or slip on trail, fall on snow, fall down rock face, sudden illness; • number of people involved; • presumed condition of the people involved; • weather conditions and visibility at site of incident. Backpack and Clothing Your backpack should be of a size suitable for the activity you intend to pursue and adequately packed. Backpack sizes are expressed in litres: from 20 to 35 litres are ideal for one-day outings that also require technical equipment. The main requisite for a backpack is the quality and manufacture of its shoulder straps as these have to ensure that
the weight is distributed evenly over the shoulders and back. Clothing and equipment are the protective shell between our body and the environment. A good rule of thumb when choosing is layers of thin or thick garments, meaning you can put on or take off as the temperature dictates. Your backpack must always contain the following: a sweater in wool or fleece, a waterproof windproof jacket, cap, pair of gloves in wool or fleece and a pair of long trousers if you set out in shorts. Also useful are a torch, water bottle or thermos, a rain cape, sun cream and glasses, a topographic map of the area, a few plasters, tissues and also a camera and binoculars. If you intend to stop over in a mountain refuge, add a towel and the bare essentials for the night (toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, comb...), and if you have one, a sleeping bag liner with pillowcase. Where required, add climbing gear, comprising an energy absorber with specific lanyard, two suitable carabiner clips suitable for via ferrata, a harness and helmet.
At the Mountain Refuge What down in the valley is taken for granted may be missing or limited up in the mountains, starting with car parks: at the start of trails there are rarely organised areas for leaving cars and you must be careful not to block access for other vehicles. It is important to know that running a mountain refuge is a real business, providing a living for its owners who receive no payment either for maintenance of hygiene services or for the shelter that can be used by hikers, or even for picking up the rubbish left around the refuge or in the surrounding area. They pay rent and take everything needed up to the refuge and all the rubbish down to the valley. Mountain refuges qualify as such due to their lacking or limited resources (electricity, water, supplies, staff…). Hikers must respect the effort that the owner makes to provide the various comforts in situations very different from those found in the valley bottom. To enjoy your experience, you need a
Footwear A shoe with a good sole (like Vibram) will offer good grip on muddy terrain or wet grass for hikes or a heavier shoe with insulation for high mountain outings. Remember that 80% of accidents in the mountains are caused by slipping. A waterproof shoe is a good idea. Wet feet blister more easily. Food A balanced diet is important as the higher up you go the more you dehydrate, so you need to be more careful to drink lots of liquids, better if they are enriched with mineral salts and supplements (about three litres for a 6-8 hour outing).

SAFETY Before setting out, a few words about safety. Our everyday lives are filled with hazards… but we don’t see them as such because we are equipped to avoid them, reduce their danger or defend ourselves. We survive crossing busy roads, possible burns in our kitchens, slipping on stirs… we have a good relationship with our surroundings; having got to know it as children we feel safe. Mountains are another environment, as are the sea, the desert and the jungle, and you must get to know the world of nature in order to move safely in it. At times we are tempted to feel safe in the mountains because we are all kitted out with good technical equipment but, not wanting to disappoint anyone, this is not enough. We must get to know the mountains calmly and with passion, and at the same time get to know our relationship with them, through effort, our own stamina, commitment and attention to changes in the weather. This humility will bring us splendid adventures in nature and with ourselves, in company or alone, acquiring true safety.

checked out in advance with the owner. • Mountains and staying in refuges are excellent educational experiences and parents are responsible for making their children’s stay enjoyable without this disturbing the peace and quiet of other guests. • Some mountain refuges also welcome pets, with refuge owners free to decide. Their decision generally takes into consideration available space and hygiene resources, if they can, if they want to and the organisation required for this service. • Owners are often Alpine guides and in any case will know places, trails, conditions and route times. If you have any doubts, ask for info and also report any particular situations you have come across on the trails you have covered. • In the case of an accident, if you have no phone or radio reception, you can request assistance from the nearest mountain refuge. Children in the Mountains Taking children into the mountains merely calls for greater attention to hazards, with more care taken when evaluating an exposed trail, the weather and length of a route. If accustomed from an early age, children naturally love the mountains, the small challenges they pose and the satisfaction of having achieved a goal, however modest. It is true that they can easily get bored just walking, but it is enough to distract them by teaching them to observe their surroundings. A stone that appeals to their imagination, “conquering” a peak, staying in a mountain refuge will become indelible memories for a child.
The itineraries in the province of Brescia given in this book are generally simple, apart from the few marked otherwise. Remember that a route with a certain technical difficulty lasting 4 hours calls for certain amount of training, while the same difficulty over a 1h 30’ route can be tackled by anyone. The same advice goes for clothing and equipment, regardless of the difficulty. • The hiking times shown are slightly longer than the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) times and have been calculated for families with
Legend
children with some training. • The altitudes are taken from IGM (Italian Military Geographical Institute) cartography and are always indicated in meters (m) above mean sea level (asl). • The directions generally refer to the route you are traveling, but geographical orientation is also provided (N = north, E = east, S = south, W = west). • Information on the Mountain Refuges is provided by the Associazione Rifugisti della Lombardia (Lombardy Mountain Refuge Operators Association).

spirit of adaptation, respect for those who work there and the other guests. Here are a few tips for mountain refuge newbies: • It is a good idea to book your overnight stay at the mountain refuge, giving an approximate time of arrival and advising if you will arrive late. This allows for better organisation of your accommodation and service, • You will find blankets, pillows and mattresses, with not many refuges providing linen (sheets, towels, shampoo sachets or similar). It is a good idea to find out ahead of your stay and bring essentials with you, bearing in mind that you will have to carry it all for a few hours... • Rooms are not very soundproof, so refrain from making noise; guests will often be setting off early and so it is a good idea to let them get to sleep early. Fun (even at a high volume) can usually be had in the daytime rooms, as long as this is

Brescian Trails
The province of Brescia, with its wealth of lakes, rivers and mountains, has many protected areas that enhance its territory, creating vast zones that can be enjoyed by lovers of Nature. The “added value that protected areas offer visitors obviously calls for extra attention to a few simple rules of conduct, necessary for safeguarding the natural environment. Bordered to the north by the large Stelvio National Park, the province of Brescia is home to over 100,000 hectares of Regional Parks and more than 4,000 hectares of Local Parks and Regional Reserves. The two biggest parks account for almost 90,000 hectares (85%): Adamello Park and Alto Garda Bresciano Park. The Adamello Group has always been known to explorers, geologists and climbers, and even lovers of history due to its many interesting
8
characteristics and immense appeal. Today it is safeguarded by the two large protected areas of the Adamello Park and the AdamelloBrenta Park, on the massif on the border between Lombardy and Trento respectively. These harsh mountains with their many water courses and forests, where man has left traces since prehistoric times, today make up an extraordinary area of nature, history and landscape. The best way to discover all the beautiful sights here is without doubt to visit the heart of these valleys, climbing their slopes and ridges along mule tracks and paths. The wild animals that can be spotted quite easily in some parts of Adamello Park must be observed without ever going too close. The same respect is required for the natural flora, which must not be picked, but admired in all its
glory, the flowers adding colour to meadows and alpine outcrops. Sheer rock faces that plunge into lakes, paths offering breathtaking views, panoramic roads winding through deep gorges, countryside surrounded by woods and the biggest Alpine lake in Italy, which provides its banks with a mild climate all year round - these are all gifts that Nature concentrates in the Alto Garda Bresciano Park. The sports possible in this area (excursions, cycling tourism, sailing, climbing and paragliding, to mention just a few) are popular ways of getting to know the various aspects of this park better. A millenary history since Roman times, through the long domination of Venice right through to the Second World War, has left deep marks on this land, shaping its beauty in artistic and cultural ways, living signs of past times.

To see
Access Laeng Take the SS 42 road from Malegno to Borno (912 m asl) and leave your car here (with permission you can also proceed to Lake Lova, 1299 m asl). From the lake, follow trail signs 82a and an easy path will bring you to the refuge (1760 m asl, 2h). If you intend to stay the night during the summer it is a good idea to give notice of your arrival.
An ancient legend exists about San Fermo, linking him to two more little churches in Valle Camonica. San Fermo, San Glisente and Santa Cristina are said to have been brothers and a sister who arrived in the valley as followers of Charles the Great in the year 796. They decided to become hermits but still wanted to keep in contact with each other. So they agreed that every evening, shortly after sunset, they would light a bonfire near their hermitage. The legend goes that the last to die was San Fermo. Santa Cristina is to be found just above Lozio (trail signs 81), while San Glisente is on the Berzo Inferiore mountains.
Access S. Fermo From Lake Lova follow trail signs 82 into the pine forest. The route is simple until the refuge, next to the little seventeenth-century church of the same name (around 2h 40’).

Uphill routes One interesting excursion that can be made from either of the two refuges is the round trip of Pizzo Camino (2491 m asl), which can even include a climb up to the panoramic peak, following trail signs 82 and 83. Due to several sections where the route tends to crumble this is only for expert excursionists. This tour is very pleasing from a landscape point of view.

up of a group of coral islands characterised by tropical seas with warm clear waters. There are numerous fossils on the slopes of this mountain - a genuine open-air museum. From a botanical point of view, Concarena has a very interesting feature: each different level has its own flora typical of higher altitudes. This phenomenon is particularly evident along the Italia Path towards the Campelli Pass, about 30’ from the refuge.

Accesses Baita Iseo Refuge Take the SS 42 road north of Breno until you come to Ono San Pietro. From the town you then drive (with permission) to Case di Valaiù (720 m asl). From here take the mule track, following the signs to the refuge (1335 m asl, 2h). You can also leave your car in Pisul (868 m asl, about 1 km after Case di Valaiù). Following the signs again you will reach the refuge in 1h 30’’. Campione Refuge The refuge is on the border between Val di Scalve and Val Camonica. It can be reached Schilpario, following signs for Passo del
Vivione to Baracca Rossa, where you can park your car. An easy trail takes you to the refuge in an hour and 10 minutes. In winter it can easily be reached using snow shoes or by ski mountaineers. You can also reach it in about 3 hours from Ono S. Pietro via the Campelli mountain pass.
To see From a geological point of view Concarena is in a very interesting setting. The presence of numerous plant and coral fossils has led to believe that Concarena was an island during the Mesozoic era (225 to 65 millions of years ago), when the Tetide covered the whole of the area south of the Alps. The Concarena Group was presumably made

An initial excursion, easy and short, allows you to observe the typical micro-climate
characteristics of much higher altitudes. From the Baita Iseo mountain refuge, following trail signs 162 towards Campelli you will come to Lake Nuadè (1480 m asl, 30’’) with signs in loco. Near the lake there is a natural cavity called Tamba del Giass, filled with snow all year round. Or from Campione mountain refuge you can easily reach either Mount Campioncino, 2015 m asl, or Mount Campione, 2150 m asl in about 30’; which will give you a panoramic view of the Adamello Group, Presolana and Valle del Sellero.

Access To reach Paisco Loveno, take the SS 42 road to Forno Allione and then turn off towards the Vivione Pass. After 10 km follow signs for Loveno (1300 m asl) and leave your car. Trail signs 160 start from the town. The path first passes through the wood then through the meadows of Monte dei Matti, encircling the peak, first on the SE slope and then on the W slope, until it arrives on the ridge. Follow it right up to the Torsoleto mountain refuge (2390 m asl, 3h 45’). As an alternative, you can access the refuge from Val di Scal following the forestry toll road about 2 hours’ walking) or from the S. Antonio Valley (about 5h 30’
from Val Brandet and about 6h 30’ from Val Campovecchio. Be careful on the exposed stretches).
Uphill routes The climb up to the Bivacco Davide shelter at the Torsoleto Pass (2578 m asl, 40’ from the refuge) gives you a 360’ view of Bernina, Valtellina, Monte Rosa and Cervino. From the pass, walking along paths and rock debris, you can reach the top of Monte Torsoleto (2708 m asl, 30’ from the pass). From here you can continue eastward to Monte Palone del Torsolazzo (2670 m asl, 1h 30’ from the pass), or westward to Cima Sellero (2744 m asl

shelters, you can visit the small Culvegla lakes (about 4h from Sant’Antonio). In about 30’ you can reach the Sellero Pass where you will meet up with the 4 Luglio Path. Following the latter you can continue to the Torsoleto Pass and then walk back down through the Val Brandet. This stretch (approx 1h) is a little exposed and therefore not recommended for the inexperienced. Near the Pass you can stop for a rest at the Bivacco Davide shelter. The Bivacco Davide has recently been renovated and is definitely the ideal place for beginners.

Access Take the SS 39 road towards the Aprica Pass. Immediately after Corteno Golgi, you will come to the fork for Sant’Antonio (1124 m asl). From here follow trail signs 124 along an easy path and after about 40’ you will reach the Alpini di Campovecchio refuge. Alternatively, again from Sant’ Antonio, you can follow trail signs 129 up the Brandet Valley which together with the Campovecchio Valley, form the Regional Natural Reserve of Sant’Antonio and lead to the Brandet mountain refuge.
To see In both valleys it is easy to spot wild animals
especially if you go up beyond the malghe.
Uphill routes Both the Val Brandet and the Valle di Campovecchio offer routes to their peaks that, although strenuous, feature one breathtaking view after another. In Val Brandet you can walk to Lake Picol (2378 m asl, about 4h 30’ from Sant’Antonio) and admire the biggest natural Alpine lake in the Brescia area in its majestic setting. Until July numerous icebergs detach from the foot of Monte Borga and float on the lake. Continuing towards the Torsoleto Pass, the other lakes of the same name are worth a visit. In the Valle di Campovecchio, again going up beyond the highest malghe or herdsman’s

About 4 km after Edolo in the direction of the Tonale Pass, take the road to the left that runs through Monno and continue towards the Mortirolo high plains. A few hundred metres before the pass of the same name, take the unmade road to the left and after a couple of km you will reach the Lake Mortirolo refuge, near the lake of the same name.
Don’t let the name of this place put you off! The root is common to many plains or hollowed areas where water stagnates (acqua morta means dead water in Italian). The Mortirolo was however the stage for bloody events as far back as the 8th century with Charles the Great’s troops, right through to the harsh battles fought by the Schivardi and Tosetti Partisan Brigades in the fight for liberation from the Nazi-Fascists. From Albergo Alto (1792 m asl) follow the road for Aprica for a short stretch, until you come to a cart track on your left that in less than 30’ takes you to the delightful hollow of Lake Mortirolo (1799 m asl). From the Val Bighera hills a little ex-military road takes you southwards up the grassy ridge of Pianaccio (2180 m asl). Continue along the easy path that follows the ridge, to the peak of Monte Pagano (2348 m asl, 1h). Near the top you will find the well-preserved ruins of the so-called “Forte del Pagano” fort. From up here the view is amazing, in particular looking towards the Adamello. This route is generally feasible even in winter, with skis
or snow shoes. The path marked with trail signs 73 for the Seroti Lakes starts from the Cascine di Val Bighera (1997 m asl). There are about ten of these lakes, in a number of wonderful hollows. The first one (2176 m asl) can easily be reached in less than an hour. The highest lake at 2750 m asl, can be reached by walking up the various hollows surrounded by a varied wonderful landscape, following the marked path. It takes about 3 hours and calls for good excursionist skills.

Following trail signs 158, an easy unmade road takes you along the Valley delle Messi and to the refuge in about 1h 30’. For the Bozzi Refuge, again on the road for Passo Gavia, follow signs for Case di Viso and leave your car in the large car park about 1 km after the town. From here trail signs 152 take you along an easy unmade road and to the refuge in about 2 hours.
To see The Valmalza Refuge, in addition to being a
popular choice with all lovers of good Valcamonica cuisine, is in an ideal area for wild animal watching. In the immediate surroundings and even sometimes from the refuge itself, you can see many families of ungulates quietly grazing among the outcrops and gulleys around the building. This is therefore an ideal place, even in the mating season in late autumn. In early summer, the Valle delle Messi is carpeted with typical flowers and the many rhododendron bushes give it a red hue.
Contrabbandieri and Montozzo Passes and also in the direction of Lake Ercavallo are populated by animals typically found at high altitudes. To see them all you have to do is walk a short distance from the refuge either in the early morning or at dusk. From the Montozzo Pass (263 m asl) you can see the wide Trento valley that drops down towards Pejo. From the Contrabbandieri Pass (2682 m asl) you get a view of the wide saddle of the Tonale. Another interesting excursion takes you to the Ercavallo Lakes (trail signs 102, about 1h 30’) and back to Case di Viso in a round trip. To get to Case di Viso you must first reach Baitello di Ercallo (SSW of the lake), the starting point for the downhill path that may prove to be quite difficult when the ice is melting.
Uphill routes Up at the Bivacco Linge shelter (2275 m asl and less than an hour from the refuge) you will cross the Alta via Camuna track (CAI

trail signs 102) and here the view widens to embrace the long valley that rises up from S. Apollonia to the Pietra Rossa Pass. From the shelter, you can return to S. Apollonia in a round trip that follows a high-altitude path (CAI trail signs 164, recently repaired by the Pezzo-Ponte di Legno CAI section) and goes past the small Monticelli lakes. As an alternative, again from the Bivacco Linge, you can walk up to the Lago Nero (Black Lake), 2386 m asl and 50’ from the shelter. From here CAI trail signs 157 will take you back to the valley bottom. Near the Bozzi refuge you can see renovation work on the numerous military constructions in this area. You can visit them free of charge and children especially will enjoy this experience. All the areas around the refuge, in the direction of both the

The refuge can easily be reached using the ski lift from Ponte di Legno for Corno d’Aola, or by following well signposted paths through the woods, good routes also for mountain bikers.
To see The refuge, at the arrival point of the ski lift, is a meeting point for all skiers in winter and for lovers of good Valcamonica cuisine all year round.
Uphill routes From the Corno d’Aola Refuge an excursion that is quite tiring, not due to its slight differences in altitude, but because of the
long walk halfway up the hillside, leads to the beautiful little Pozzuolo lakes in the hollow of the same name. From the Chiesetta degli Alpini (church dedicated to the Alpine corps), follow the unmade road to the right of the ski slopes and pick up the easy-to-spot path marked with trail signs 40. This will take you to the Conca di Pozzuolo in about 1h 30’. From here you can walk straight down to Valbione following trail signs 40. This route takes you past the fabulous waterfalls in Val Seria, a popular winter destination for ice climbers. Those interested in a harder route can continue from Conca del Pozzuolo towards Bochetta di Sacola (2394 m asl) and then follow trail signs 41 down to Valbione and

then Ponte di Legno, completing a circular route around Corno Marcio. Nearby the Roccolo Ventura Refuge, located at the foot of impervious Monte Casola and Monte Castablo, there is the little old church of Santa Giula, renovated at the turn
of the sixties and probably having very ancient origins. A document dated 1312 in fact mentions it in relation to the Monastery of San Salvatore in Brescia. Many lovers of the mountain come here for the feast day on 16 August each year.

Monte Adamello (3539 m asl), Cima Plem (3182 m asl) and Corno Baitone (3330 m asl) ring the Venerocolo Glacier that, with its mighty moraines, is evidence of glacier activity during the last “short glacial epoch” (1500 to 1850 m asl) and subsequent withdrawal, which still continues today. Green alders and mountain pines cover the slopes around the lakes, while the harsher areas are home to rhododendrons and dwarf juniper. Animals here include Deer and Roe deer in the woods below the lakes, the Salamander and a number of innocuous reptiles in the humid zones of the Malga Lavedole herdsman’s shelter.

Access From Temù, drive up the Val D’Avio to the Adamello Park area with facilities at Malga Caldea. From here follow the path marked with trail signs 11 up the steep slope that leads to the d’Avio lakes (1h). From here, having cleared the next terrace dominated by the imposing waterfall, you will reach the Malga Lavedole plain (2044 m asl, 1h 40’). From the plain, walk along the famous calvario or calvary, which is the name
the Italian Alpine troops gave to this stretch during the Great War and you will reach Lake Venerocolo and afterwards, in just a few minutes, the Garibaldi refuge (3h 30’).
To see The climb up to the Garibaldi refuge, even if a little strenuous, allows you to admire one of the largest wildest areas of the Adamello Park. The Valle dell’Avio is crowned by some of the most spectacular peaks in the group:

From the Garibaldi refuge numerous excursions are possible, from the simplest to the most difficult. Even non-mountaineers can manage the walk up to the Pass and the Punta del Venerocolo, as long are they are suitably equipped and the weather is good. Above the refuge take the path marked with trail signs 42, and follow it up to the moraines that come down from the Venerocolo Pass. Use the signs to guide you together with your destination, which is always clearly
visible (3136 m asl, 2h 15’ from the refuge). From the pass it takes about 30’ to get to Punta Venerocolo (3323 m asl), with a visit to the military posts along the way. Another destination, not difficult but tiring, is the one that leads to Lake d’Aviolo, allowing you to make a round trip surrounded by the most beautiful sights of the Adamello Group. From the refuge walk down the path marked by trail signs 1 to Lake Benedetto. Here leave trail 11 on your right and walk up to the Gole Larghe Pass (around 4h). From here, initially on rock debris, then along a steep but easy path, you will reach the Aviolo refuge (2h from the pass). Finally an excursion that can be completed in one day starting from the refuge and allowing you to come close to the Venerocolo Glacier. Having reached Malga Lavedole herdsman’s shelter (45’’), follow trail signs 12 to Lake Pantano. Once here (around 2h), near the dam you can pick up Path Number 1 and follow it to the refuge. The stretch between Bocchetta del Pantano and the Venerocolo dam calls for special care in some places as it can be slippery. Once down out of the pass, the route to the refuge is easier (around 5h in total). This excursion can be walked in both directions.

Access The Cascata Refuge can easily be reached by car, following the Valpaghera road for about 5km from the town of Vezza d’Oglio, on state road SS 42 between Edolo and Ponte di Legno. You will reach a car park near the ENEL cablecar and from there an easy path (trail signs 21) takes you to the Sandro Occhi all’Aviolo Refuge.
To see The Cascata Refuge is surrounded by woods of the pine and larch trees that are typical in the Alpine valleys, where the only noise is the stream bubbling down from the Piana dell’Aviolo. The refuge offers a
chance to savour the best examples of typical Vallecamonica cuisine. During the winter the refuge is a useful place to take a break for lovers of frozen waterfalls. Thanks to the huge amount of water, natural differences in ground level and the valley’s northerly exposure, ice climbing is in fact possible for a long period in the winter. As an alternative, the Cascata Refuge is an easy yet interesting destination with snowshoes. Setting out directly from the refuge, following trail signs CAI 72, in about an hour an easy forest road takes you to the interesting Roccolo Pornina (1737 m asl). Before you reach Garda, clear directions for Val Malga take you first to the Valmalga Refuge and then to the Premassone Refuge, both accessible by car and with large car parks. Paths start at the Premassone Refuge for the Conca del Miller (trail signs 23) with the Gnutti Refuge and for the Conca del Baitone (trail signs 13), with the Baitone and Tonolini refuges.
To see Like all other easy to reach refuges, those
of Valmalga and Premassone also specialise in typical Valcamonica cuisine, using natural local produce. Even lovers of the high peaks must stop on their return in one of these welcoming refuges, at least for a snack of local sliced cured meats and cheese. Valley bottom refuges are the ideal starting point for numerous excursions and the Valmalga is no exception as it is overlooked by two large natural amphitheatres. The Baitone and Tonolini refuges can be reached one after the other from Val Malga, following trail signs 13 from nearby the Premassone Refuge.
To see The wide Conca del Baitone is the ideal environment for those wanting to spend a few days in the mountains. To the west of the hollow there is the Corno delle Granate: on its slopes, among the rock debris, you can find the dark red Almandine Garnet crystals. For those wanting to see animals in their wild state, we recommend going to the western side of the dam near the Baitone
Refuge, either in the early morning or towards dusk. The slopes of the Punta di Val Rossa on the one side and those of the Corno del Cristallo on the other are inhabited by chamois deer and ibex, recently reintroduced from the Adamello park, and by marmots and mountain hares. Golden eagles can sometimes be seen soaring high above the rocks. If you would like a chance to visit wonderful, wild, magnificent places in close contact with marmots, golden eagles, ermines and mountain hares, put aside a couple of days for an excursion that reaches the highest Alpine lakes of the Adamello Group by using the Tonolini Refuge as your base. To see Val Miller has glacial origins, like all the Adamello valleys, but here it is easy to see, immediately above the “steps” and right along the route to the refuge, the typical sheep rocks that have been smoothed by the polishing effect of the ice. We definitely recommend a visit to Lake Miller (2270 m asl, 30’ from the refuge) and to the Pantano del Miller marsh (2423 m asl, 1h from the refuge). Along the way you will see the Val Daone primula, native to the Adamello group.

Mountain bikers can ride up from Berzo and follow the “Percorso della Memoria” (Trail of Memory) downhill, which calls for special care due to its technical aspect, some stretches very exposed with tight bends on stone (about 18 km in total).
It is also interesting to reach Loa on foot along the “Percorso della Memoria”, setting out from the SS42 state road near the picnic area (in Bettolino-Lorengo). The path follows the route of a mule track built during World War One. Along the way you can admire military buildings from the war: positions for machine guns and antiaircraft weapons, tunnels, camps—all recently restored. The route up to Re di Castello (2889 m asl, 1h 30’ from the refuge) is not very difficult, but very interesting due to the 360° panorama that you get from the top. Starting out from Brescia the routes to the Maria e Franco refuge are strenuous but very interesting. For the less accustomed, we would definitely recommend setting out from Malga Bissina herdsman’s hut in Val Daone (turn off the SS 237 road at Pieve di Bono for Tione). Access from Val Dois (by car to Val Paghera di Ceto) is solitary and untamed and mainly follows the valley bottom. The route from Isola di Saviore, even if a little long, is the most interesting from a landscape point of view, especially if you set out early in the morning on a clear day.
The Maria e Franco refuge is the highest in the province (of those you can reach on foot) and it is set in the beautiful untamed setting of the Dernal Pass. With only basic facilities, this refuge offers only spartan accommodation. Just over an hour away from the refuge there are forts that date back to the Great War near the Campo Pass (2296 m asl, 1h 20’ from the refuge). The area around the pass is interesting from a nature point of view as the land is an island of limestone in the surrounding dioritic-tonalitic mass of Monte Re di Castello.

Take the Crocedomini SP 345 road from Breno or Esine to Bazena. Leave your car here, and walk up the path marked with trail signs 1 to Val Fredda. Then another almost level path through the Val Fredda Pass (2321 m asl, 2h) and through the upper Val Cadino, will bring you to the pass and then to Lake Vacca and after this to the Tita Secchi refuge. From Vale Sabbia follow signs for Bagolino, continue past Piana del Gaver to Malga Cadino. Leave your car here and then take the easy mule track (trail signs 19) to the refuge. The walk takes less than 2h.
The Tita Secchi refuge is the ideal starting point for many excursions, regardless of the interests you may have (see also the info sheet for the Tassara and Crocedomini refuges). Between the Blumone Pass (2633 m asl, 1h from the refuge) and Cima Laione you will come across innumerable military posts that date back to the Great War. If you want to dedicate a day to history, you can continue to the Monoccola Pass (2592 m asl, 3h 30’ from the refuge) walking almost all the way on old mule tracks, passing buildings and posts that all date back to the start of the 20th Century. To see The areas surrounding the two refuges are interesting from both a geological and vegetation point of view. The Val Fredda and Val Cadino are where contact between magma rocks and sedimentary rocks (around 30 million years ago) has left the most obvious traces. In the two valleys both
formations are easy to see, also due to the presence of a wealth of flora, with some endemic species (for example the Fritillaria and the European Alpine Primrose of Monte Cadino).
Uphill routes The Tassara refuge is open all year round and during the winter acts as a starting point for easy downhill or cross-country skiing. In summer, excursions in Val Fredda are easy and within everyone’s reach, with those leading to Monte Frerone, the Tita Secchi and Gheza refuges being a little longer (ask the Darfo CAI for keys as it is locked). To see Punta Almana is at the centre of a large natural amphitheatre that dominates the whole of Lake Iseo and Val Trompia and can be reached with several lovely hikes.
Uphill routes The proposed itinerary starts from the Forcella di Sale pass (1108m asl) which can be reached from Croce di Marone (1166 m asl, 40’ by car from Marone, via Cislano di Zone), from Sale Marasino (560 m asl, 1h

The itinerary that goes via Croce di Marone is the one most recommended for mountain bikes. From the pass you can follow either of two itineraries. The easiest and fastest first follows the downwards 3V route. Before leaving the pine forest (less than 10’’ from the pass) take the path to the right that leads up, crosses a bird-snaring area and then traces an arch up the eastern slopes of Punta Almana. Monte Isola is a municipality in itself comprising eleven towns. With a surface area of 4.5 km² it is not the largest lake island in Europe, as often reported in guides (for example, the island of Manamansalo in Finland measures 70 km²) but it is the highest: 600 m asl at Madonna della Ceriola. Monte Isola is served all year round by regular ferries from Iseo, from Sulzano for Peschiera Maraglio and from Sale Marasino for Carzano. The ferry also takes bikes. Various excursions can be made to Monte Isola; the itineraries shown start from Peschiera. Do not forget a visit to the two boatyards that still produce the typical Lake Iseo boats called naecc. The tour of the island at the
lake level is simpler and less difficult, above all if completed on bikes. The lakeside path gently rises and falls and runs right round the perimeter of the island. Along the way there are a number of typical restaurants and some picnic areas. Only the outside of the Rocca or fortress can be visited (built by the Oldofredi family in the 14th Century) because it is privately owned. To the rear a pleasant picnic area in the wood is perfect for relaxing even on the hottest days. The itinerary that leads to Madonna della Ceriola (600 m asl) is a 1h 30’ walk on the island’s roads unless you use public transport to Cure (from here it only takes 15’ to reach the Sanctuary).

Those wanting to enjoy the pleasure of a walk overlooking the lake, even if a little strenuous (EE difficulty in some stretches) are advised to follow trail signs 263 that start from Vello (northwards after Marone on the SS 510 road). The path first rises through terraces of olives and vines, then it becomes steeper and wilder on the slopes of the mountain with a few rather exposed stretches. It takes about 3h to reach the peak.

The earth pyramids are an interesting phenomenon of rainwater erosion. The original moraine soil is initially eroded by rivulets of water that form after violent rainstorms. Later the beating rain continues this erosion in the less protected areas (by the large stones), continually lowering the level of the surrounding soil. The biggest of the pyramids is 30 metres tall, with a base diameter of 8 m and it is topped by a stone with a diameter of around 4 metres. In order to admire these interesting formations, following the eastern bank of Lake Iseo on the SS 510
road will bring you to Marone and from here you take the turnoff for Zone. After about 8 km uphill you will reach Cislano, near Zone, where a handy car park with playground is the starting point for this itinerary (take a visit to the 12th Century small church of San Giorgio with its interesting frescos). The path winds through a wood and is wellmarked with various stopping points for observing the earth pyramids from close up plus many information boards. The whole path can be completed in about 1h.

Brescian Trails • Val Trompia
Uphill routes The Valtrompia Refuge is the ideal base for those wanting to take short, easier walks. At the foot of Monte Guglielmo, the route up to the peak via woods and gentle meadows is the most difficult. Two other excursions over almost flat land lead to Caregno Plains (1h 30 min) and San Zeno Hill (1h 30 min by muletrack), respectively. Given its particular position, the Valtrompia Refuge is the ideal destination for cyclists.

When you come to Lavone, turn left and after about 14 km, following signs for Pezzaze and then for San Zeno hill, you will come to your destination. Access from Pisogne in Valle Camonica: Turn off state road 510 in the centre of Pisogne and follow signs for Val Palo (about 18 km). For the Valtrompia mountain refuge: Take national road SS 345 north to Lavone and turn left towards Pezzaze and San Zeno Hill. After a short stretch take a left towards Pezzoro. Park your car in Pezzoro (911 m asl) and follow the largely unpaved
road with some cement-paved stretches to the Refuge (1,260 m asl, 1h 10 min).
To see This is a strategic point for excursions to both Monte Guglielmo and the Almici and Valtrompia mountain refuges. The excursion that takes you to Monte Campione in a couple of hours is truly beautiful, panoramic and easy: trail 3V will take you up to the top of San Zeno and the top of Marucolo in an hour and a half, then a downhill stretch followed by another uphill bit brings you to Monte Campione (where the ski lifts arrive). For those who still have the energy, another hour and a half brings you to the Monte Cimosco mountain refuge, via Monte Muffetto.

Walk up to Corno Barzò. From the Portole Pass, the Sentiero della Resistenza or “Trail of Resistance” to the right (white-red-green signposts) leads to a ridge offering fabulous views surrounded by typical rock formations and follows the edge of the ridge to the rounded peak of Corno Barzò (1892 m, 45’). Corna Blacca. From Portole Pass the mule track (Trail 3V) takes you on a winding route down to Paio Pass (1685 m) and arrives at a fork (40’). To the left (signposted) a grassy path takes you back up the left slope of the first two Monti di Paio to the peak of the third and fourth and then drops to the saddles that divide it from Corna Blacca. Here a large rock indicates two possible uphill routes: to the left, the “direct route” winds steeply between mugho pines and loose rock and
across a grassy slope to the top ridge that soon takes you to the peak (2005 m, 2h). On the right is the “normal route” (high Trail 3V), which crosses the hillside halfway up the northern slope and then goes up the left-hand side of the western crest to the summit of Corna Blacca. Using one route for the outward journey and the other for the return makes it an interesting round trip.
Uphill routes The routes take you through spectacular wild landscapes, characterised by white Dolomite limestone from the Noric period in spires, pinnacles and towers that give rise to curious bizarre shapes (the sphinx, the eagle’s beak, the mushroom at Cima Caldoline). Another dominating feature is the luxuriant presence of mugho pines and several extremely rare species of flowers (red lilies and fritillaries). The area was also the scene of cruel events during the Partisan resistance: as shown by headstones that commemorate the fallen.

Rocca d’Anfo was built on approximately 50 hectares of land by the Venetians in the fifteenth century to defend Val Sabbia from the neighbouring episcopal principality of Trento. It was greatly modified by the Napoleonic French in the first ten years of the nineteenth century to adapt it to changes in military tactical requirements. French reconstruction was preceded by a large-scale mapping of the location, which enabled extraordinary adaptation of the buildings to the morphology of the
landscape. The French moved the military buildings slightly further north than the original Venetian position, in order to exploit the natural line of a big rocky slope that reaches down to Lake Idro from Monte Censo. The batteries were staggered at 50 m intervals up to the large round tower overlooking the whole area and linked by tunnels, trenches and ramps that also gave access to logistic areas, from the munitions store to the mule stables. In 1918, when Trenti-
no became part of Italy, the Rocca lost its strategic value even if it remained at the disposal of the Ministry of Defence until 1992. Only guided visits are possible (phone 0356/83224 to book, info@valsabbia.it). The complete route, which lasts about five
hours, covers a difference in altitude of about 400 metres. We recommend taking an electric torch and water with you as there are no refreshment points along the way. Shorter routes are possible, also suitable for children.

m asl). There are two alternatives from Sant’Urbano. The first option is to follow trail 23 along Dosso del Barbio (Barbio Rise). After crossing above the “Le Prade” meadows, you meet up with trail 5 (1,352 m asl, 1h 30’ from Sant’Urbano) coming from Spino Pass. To take the alternate route from Sant’Urbano, follow trail marker 6 to Ortello Mountain Hut (770 m asl, 20’); from here take trail 11 until you reach a little saddle (1,469 m asl, 2h 30’), where the path intersects with trail 5, just 10 min from the summit.

Access Starting from Toscolano drive to Gaino and then follow the stream until you get to a little bridge. After crossing the bridge, continue on the bumpy road to Palazzo (816 m asl), where you can park your car. Taking trail 2, you quickly reach Spino Pass (1,160 m asl, 50’ from the car park) and then, in another 15’, the Pirlo allo Spino Refuge. This is the easiest and fastest route to the Refuge. Just before arriving at Spino Pass, near trail 8, it is worthwhile to stop and admire the impressive Sigagnöi chestnut tree with its circumference of over 5 metres. Near the pass, two enormous trees - a beech and an ash - welcome you with their inviting canopy.
Here are two alternative access routes. From Gardone or Salò, drive to San Michele, then pass through the Colomber and park your car in Verghere (about 500 m asl). The trail mainly winds along the Barbarano river (trail sign 1) nestled in the woods. From Malga Gemelle (960 m asl, 1h 30 min from your car), there is a steep climb up to the Refuge (1h 50’). From Toscolano, follow the signs to Montemaderno and then take the unpaved road to Sant’Urbano (872 m asl). From this point, hike along a flat trail until you encounter trail 8 in the municipality of Pirello (1,030 m asl, 40’). The path traverses chestnut and beech woods up to Spino Pass (1,160 m asl, 1h 50’ from your car) and finally the Refuge.

An interesting peak that you can easily reach from the Refuge is Mount Spino (see the excursions below). The panorama ranges over the entire Lake Garda hinterland up to Lake Valvestino. Another route - only for expert hikers (difficulty EE) - traverses some of the wildest zones in this area. The trail makes a large loop allowing you to get an overview of the continuously changing landscape and flora (especially in May and June), as well as several areas that hosted the partisans during World War II. From the Refuge ascend to Mount Spino (1,488 m asl, 1h) and stay on the crest until you reach Buco del Gatto Pass (1h 15’) and then Buco del Tedesco Pass (2h; from the latter, you can go back to the Refuge, if necessary, descending a steep, then
almost flat, trail). Continue walking along the ridge until you get to Mount Forametto, then go down to Gardoncello refuge (1,041 m asl, 3h 40’). Continue your descent and in about 30 min you will arrive at Scola Haybarn (925 m asl, 4h 10’), where you can admire a chestnut tree of majestic proportions (about 5 meters in circumference). At Scola Haybarn you meet up with route 9 that leads you back to the Refuge. The road climbs up to Pozze Mountain Hut (1,060 m asl, 4h 30’) and then arrives at the rise; from this point, it travels up and down along the Mountainside about 150 metres below the ridge that you hiked on the outbound leg, until it returns to the Refuge (about 6h in total).

You can reach Sasso on foot from Gargnano following trail sign 37. This route, which starts at the elementary school (90 m asl), allows you to see the lemon houses of Quarcina, in the municipality of Masaga (454 m asl, 1h from the school), and then Sasso (546 m asl, 1h 15’). You can also get to Sasso by car, taking the road from Gargnano to Valvestino. The scenery makes the climb from Sasso to Mount Comer extremely rewarding. Starting at the large fountain in Sasso, follow the signs to San Valentino(772 m asl, trail sign 31, about a 30-min walk). It is worthwhile to take a short detour to visit the old
hermitage perched on the cliff. After returning from the hermitage, keep on the path until you get to an intersection (830 m asl, 1h from Sasso); then continue hiking along the crest on a rather exposed trail up to the peak (1,279 m asl, 2h 15’ from Sasso; if you have children, watch out on some rather exposed stretches). On a beautiful day the view from the peak is extraordinary and spans the entire lake. From the San Valentino Hermitage you can climb the gorge, avoiding a return trip to the fork, but the route is recommended only for expert hikers.

Magasa, including the village of Cima Rest (featuring typical haybarns and an astronomical observatory), has recently been the object of a tourism promotion effort. An excursion to Puria Pass is very interesting, also because ungulates have been repopulated in this area. You can often see chamois, ibex, and roe deer, in addition to countless predators. You should not have any trouble finding the little road, starting at the edge of the village of Cadria (municipality of Magasa, 918 m asl), that leads to secluded Puria Pass (1,300 m asl, 1h 30’, trail marker 68). The route can also be covered on Mountain bike or horseback. Another interesting hike (a little more strenuous than the previous one) goes to Tombea Peak and, if you feel like continuing, to Mount Caplone. After parking your
car at Denai Meadows (1,188 m asl, turnoff on the road from Magasa to Cima Rest), climb to Pilaster (cement road heading N) and then follow trail signs 67. After Bocca Cablone (1,755 m asl, 1h 50’ from your car), trail 67 merges with trail 444 and the white and yellow signs of the Antonioli Trail. Then from Malga Tombea (Tombea Summer Pasture - 1,820 m asl, 2h 30’) take the trail to the summit of Tombea (1,950 m asl, 3h). After coming back down, continue eastwards on the old military road and, a little after the tunnel, climb up to the summit of Mount Caplone (40’ from the malga). As you walk along the route, you can see military roads and posts dating back to the time when the border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire ran through the area.

Campione, once a typical factory town, can be reached by car from a turnoff inside the Campione tunnel on the western side of Lake Garda. A large cotton mill, now closed down, was constructed at the end of the 19th century (1896-97); all the necessary construction materials were transported there by lake. A visit to the riverbed of the Tignalga river, which originates in the San Michele hanging valley, is very interesting from a geological point of view. Here you can see a section the Jurassic cliffs found in this area of the lake. From the village, head toward the Tignalga river gorge. Near the bridge there are two trail signs: trail 266
goes to Prabione (530 m asl, 1h 40’), where you can stop at the Parco Alto Garda (Upper Garda Park) visitor centre and library; trail 277 takes you to Pregasio (477 m asl, 1h 15’). From Prabione, trail 266 continues on to Mount Cas (779 m asl, 50’ from the visitor centre); the last stretch of the crest before you arrive at the summit juts out over the lake and offers a fantastic view (watch out on exposed stretches). After enjoying the summit, you can go down to the 16thcentury Monte Castello Sanctuary (683 m asl, 1h). From Pregasio various excursions can be made to the Lake Garda hinterland.

Starting from Limone, you may take an interesting two-day hike to Mount Carone, using Segala mountain refuge as a base (1,250 m asl; bivouac without an operator, always open). If you do not feel like making the tiring ascent on foot from Limone, you can drive to Nota Pass (1,208 m asl) by way of Vesio. From the pass, follow trail signs 421 for about an hour until you reach Segala mountain refuge. The part of the trail that climbs to the summit of Mount Carone is recommended only for expert hikers. If you would like to make the trip on foot, leave your car at Limone and walk to the La Milanesa bar, where you take trail 101 to the Singol Valley. On the muletrack (of military origin), at 710 m asl (about 1h 40’ from La Milanesa) there is an intersection with a sign.
Turn right and climb up a steep path through the woods to Mughera Peak (1,161 m asl, 2h 45’). Then go north from the peak to Guil Pass (1,209 m asl, 3h 10’) and from this point follow the easy unpaved road until you reach Segala Mountain Hut (1,250 m asl, 3h 40’, trail signs 421). Leave Segala mountain refuge and head west to Bocca dei Fortini (1,243 m asl, 10’ from the refuge). Then take the route on the right along the ridge of Mount Carone (trail signs 105), which ascends first through the woods, then on a steep path set into the rocks. On Mount Carone (1,621 m asl, 1h 20’ from the hut) there are the remains of some old military barracks. For the descent, you can choose the less demanding east face.

Access Take the paved road from Villa (673 m asl), the highest hamlet in the Municipality of Serle, and follow the signs to the Alpini House and Chapel (780 m). After a short drive you will arrive at your destination located at the entrance to the Cariadeghe Plateau Natural Reserve, where you can park your car. This is a good starting point for several hikes.
Uphill routes Climb to the Church of San Bartolomeo. From the car park, take the winding narrow
road to the south that winds up to the church on the summit in less than 30’. Loop around the plateau. From the car park, take the unpaved road (trail signs 4). It is a nice enjoyable walk, with gentle uphills and downhills, many dolines (stream sink holes), and small woods along the path. At the end of the road take the uphill path on the right, “Canal del Luf” (Wolf’s Gorge), until you reach “Donna Guarnieri” trail (trail signs 391) just beneath the Dosso del Lupo (Wolf’s Back). This path leads
to the summit of Mount Ucia (1,168 m asl, 1h 30’), the highest point of the entire route. By taking a slight detour (short exposed stretch with metal cables), it is also possible to climb the mountain on the opposite side, “Corna de Caì” (Caine Horn), a distinctive pinnacle overhanging the valley. From Mount Ucia, continue hiking along the ridge through the gently rolling woods of the “Scalette Albere” (Albere Stairway) to the saddle called Bocca di Luf (Wolf’s Mouth) near the Serle Roccolo. Leave trail 391 and follow the wide path on the right descending towards Fienile Rossino (Rossino Haybarn); then keep right until you arrive at a green clearing where the Cascina del Comune (Town Mountain Hut 894 m asl) is situated. The trail continues south until it reaches the road marked trail 4. Turn left and take the short walk back along the road to the car park (3h for the entire loop).
To see The Cariadeghe karst plateau is a unique environment in Lombardy. On the surface the karst nature of the plateau is evident from the dolines or sinkholes (found here in high numbers, 250-300 per km2) and the deep
rock gullies, so-called “ploughed fields”. Underground, karstification resulted in many caves and underground drainage. There are no water streams at ground level. The vegetation consists of dense copses of hornbeam, oak, beech, and chestnut trees, with wide grassy glades. The area is dotted with numerous rural buildings, many of which are very picturesque. The Church of San Bartolomeo dates back to the 18th century and was erected on the ruins of the Benedictine Monastery of San Pietro in Monte from the Longobard period.

Access There are many trails to access Mount Maddalena, the city of Brescia’s own mountain. Here we will only mention a few of the most interesting ones. From Via Turati, at the start of Via Panoramica, follow trail marker 6, which then crosses Via Panoramica at several points, until you reach the beautiful Church and Cloister of San Gottardo (420 m asl, 1h). Continue walking past the end of the R bus line through the lovely shady woods to the old railway station above the cableway. Then pass the Cavrelle Restaurant, the end
of the M bus line during the summer season, and go on until, very shortly, you reach the Church of Santa Maddalena (825 m asl, 2h 30’ from Via Turati). An alternate route from the Church of San Gottardo follows trail signs 7 to Cascina Margherita and from there switches to trail 5 to climb the summit (1h and 30’ from San Gottardo). Trail 1 starts at the Parish Church of Santa Eufemia. This trail, also called “Sentee dei bus” (Holes Trail) because it goes through a karst area with many caves, leads to the Roccolo di Monte Poffa (491 m asl, 1h). Continue walking into
the woods, where you will encounter the ruins of an old Refuge (844 m asl, 2h 30’). Trail 2, an alternative route that you may use to make a loop, also starts from the Church of Santa Eufemia. It climbs up along the steep Triinale, the grassy ridge that forms the western side of the Carrobbio Valley. The trail gets around the valley head going by way of Pozza Zezia, amid beautiful chestnut trees, and continues over apparently flat land until it eventually merges with trail 1. Almost immediately afterwards, trail 2 branches off
to the left in the woods and climbs up to the Church of Santa Maddalena (2h 30’).
To see Mount Maddalena is every bit as captivating as the more distant and well-known destinations: dense woods populated by century-old trees, meadows, ponds, picturesque old refuges, and sweeping panoramas. Its major advantage is that it can be easily reached from the city of Brescia on foot or by public transport.

Hiking “Sentiero Numero 1”
Adamello trail Number 1 is an extremely interesting excursionist route, due both to its majestic setting and to the variety of vegetation along the itinerary all year round. This is a route for expert excursionists with exposed stretches, some equipped with safety devices, which in particular conditions (early season snow for example, or bad weather) can call for mountain climbing skills and a complete set of gear is therefore recommended. The stages all take from four to six hours
and most of the route winds its way at an altitude of between 2000 and 3000 metres for about 80 km. The itinerary can be followed from Rifugio Tassara northwards or from Edolo southwards. There are numerous variants and if you need to, you can always drop down into the valley quite quickly and stop in one of the refuges along the way. Adamello hiking paths cover the whole of the Park of the same name, from North to South, crossing some of the most beautiful

The Sentiero delle Tre Valli or Three Valley Trail, dedicated to Silvano Cinelli, is famous for being around 120 km long and because it follows a relatively low-altitude route, from 150 m in Brescia to around 2,200 m on Monte Colombine. This is an eight-stage trek suitable for everyone, where some slightly more difficult “high” trails, can be avoided by choosing the easier “low” variants. Starting from Brescia, Trail 3V is marked with the Brescia colours of blue and white and runs along the ridges of the watershed that

Alpine Guides Masters of Mountaineering Mountain professionals The profession of alpine guide has evolved from a simple escort into a skilled professional. Today’s alpine guides are not only experts in technical Mountaineering disciplines - from the traditional to most modern - they are knowledgeable about all the naturalistic, cultural, and ethnographic facets of the mountain environment, in addition to the life of man in the mountains. Going to the mountains is one thing, knowing about them is another: for this reason, no mater how skilled a hiker is, certain excursions require an alpine guide. Guides are obviously necessary for extreme sports, but are also recommended for other kinds of activities and groups: children, teenagers, senior citizens, easy walks, adventure, etc. There should be no trouble finding a guide to meet your needs. Alpine guides are professionals like attorneys, engineers, ski instructors, and medical doctors. You can find them in the valley and even in the city (many guides are also Mountain Refuge operators). Do not hesitate to contact them for information or advice. All of them offer custom programmes and estimates and can help you plan the outing of your dreams. With the aid of an alpine guide your experience will be enriched by new techniques and greater knowledge of the territory and local traditions, as well as by other information that only professionals can provide. Hiking and mountaineering take place in a natural environment: knowing more about it and yourself enhances your safety and prevents accidents.
Assorifugi Lombardia The Association of Lombardy Mountain Refuges Operators Represents owners and managers of mountain refuges in Lombardy committed to arousing greater awareness of the special aspects of excursion and high-altitude tourism made possible by mountain refuges and to sharing the many specific problems linked to the running and owning of a mountain refuge. This brochure has been put together precisely to help spread this awareness. It includes a selection of excursions and details about mountain refuges in the province of Brescia, informing tourists about accommodation in our area. Our intention was to create a memo rather than a guide, for all those wanting to get to know the world of the Brescia mountains. We have included itineraries within the reach of families and for groups, presenting the Mountain as a world of nature waiting to be discovered, suggesting places that are aware of sustainability, of their surrounding nature for characteristic holidays and/or truly typical lunches.
