CASTELLO DI PADERNELLO (CASTLE)
PONTE SAN VIGILIO (BRIDGE BY GIULIANO MAURI)
CASTELLO MARTINENGO (CASTLE)
ROCCA D’ORZINUOVI (FORTIFICATION)
“Once upon a time, there was a castle, beautiful and austere, around which a rural village rose. It was the year 1391...” The castle changed over time until in the 18th century it has been turned into a noble villa, a charming brick construction surrounded by a moat and with a still functioning drawbridge.
A work by artist Giuliano Mauri, an interpreter of “art in nature”, this bridge shows an artistic pattern with intertwined chestnut branches stretched across a small water stream. Charmingly set in the landscape, it is a “constant dialogue with time, which paints the days and the seasons with ever changing moods” creating an authentic conversation between humankind and nature.
Built at the end of the 14th century by the noble Martinengo family, it was used as residence and decorated by the Campi brothers and Lattanzio Gambara. It is one of the castles in the plain which are still surrounded by a moat, now turned into a meadow. It stands in the middle of the village showing its cylindrical towers and old charm.
Originally a military citadel, it is an eclectic combination of buildings amassed against the tower built in the 13th century as door to access the town. Today it is an exhibition centre and the backdrop of the beautiful town square. The municipal building, with its 1568 door adorned with St. Marc’s Lion, is also on the same square.

CHIESA E ORATORIO DEI DISCIPLINI (CHURCH AND ORATORY)
LA PIEVE DI BIGOLIO (SANTUARIO MADONNA DELLA PIEVE - SHRINE)
SANTA MARIA DELLA FORMIGOLA PIEVE DELLA FORMIGOLA (CHURCH)
Dating from the 14th century, it is located in the historic centre of the town, by the parish church built in the 18th century. You can admire works by Paolo da Caylina, a Virgin Mary with the Baby from 1497 and the altar pieces by Grazio Cossali. The women’s gallery is embellished by a Passion of Christ-themed cycle of frescoes (15th century).
A site of popular devotion, the Shrine is surrounded by the countryside and was built in 1586 over two prior churches (5th-6th and 10th-11th centuries). The interior is very simple. It contains a terracotta tile, “Dormitio Virginis”, a masterpiece by the “Master of Angels” Cantori.
Surrounded by Brescia’s country side and along the bike trail, the paleo-Christian parish church still retains the poetry of rural medieval churches. It is an interesting testament to 14th century Lombard architecture, with three naves covered by a pointed arch ceiling supported by low brick columns. The 15th century votive frescoes are noteworthy.

PIEVE DI SAN PANCRAZIO E DUOMO (PARISH CHURCH AND CATHEDRAL)
CIVIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The castle, called “Rocha Magna”, was built on the left bank of Oglio river between the 9th and 10th centuries. Over the base of one of its towers, Torre del Popolo or San Fedele was built (85 m.) Opposite the fortification lies the “Rocchetta”, a square tower built to guard the Roman bridge (4th century A.D.) A little further away rises an imposing defensive tower.
Built over the ruins of the old fortification, in a panoramic position, the castle was designed as private residence for Count Gaetano Bonoris and is in neo-Medieval stile. It emulates architectural motifs found in castles from the 13th and 14th centuries in Piedmont and Aosta Valley. This visit gives you access to a fairy-tale place.
The beautiful Romanesque parish church dedicated to St. Pancrazio. The parish church is one of the oldest in Lombardy and contains works by Romanino, Paolo da Caylina, and Callisto Piazza. The Cathedral expresses the magnificence of 18th century Late Baroque and contains an altar piece by Romanino.
Among the marvellous 15th century frescoes of the former Disciplini church are a display of significant archaeological remains from the Neolithic Age to the Early Middle Ages. Of particular value are 5 bronze swords, maybe an offering to a god of water and found in the Chiese and Mella rivers.

BASILICA ROMANA MINORE DI SAN LORENZO (ROMAN BASILICA)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Consecrated in 1647, the basilica church presents unique architectural solutions for the time and a rich decorative collection by renowned artists. In the Most Blessed Sacrament chapel are kept two spectacular canvases measuring 10x5.5 metres made by Giovan Battista Tiepolo, a master painter from the Veneto region known for his use of colours.
The exhibition is organised in chronological order following the evolution of civilisation in the southern plains of Brescia from the Neolithic (6th millennium B.C.) until after the Middle Ages. Significant artifacts are Cenomani Gaul silver drachmas and the only coin known in Italy with King Aripert I (653661 A.D.)
