ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF CATULLUS GROTTOES AND MUSEUM

CASTELLO SCALIGERO (CASTLE)

ROMAN VILLA AND ANTIQUARIUM

ROCCA VISCONTEO - VENETA E CASA DEL PODESTÀ

This is a beautiful archaeological area immersed in an olive grove overlooking the lake. It’s been known since the 15th century as “Catullus Grottoes”, from the name of the Latin poet whose family owned a villa there. These important remains belong to one of the main Roman residential villas in northern Italy. The museum contains significant artifacts.

Scenically surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda, this castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by Verona’s noble Della Scala family. The main features are the wet dock, an incredible fortified port built in the 14th century, the ramparts, and the crenellated towers. The central tower is 37 metres. It is possible to enjoy a beautiful walk on the ramparts.

Originally located in proximity to the beach, it is the most important archaeological testimony of great Late Antiquity Roman villas in northern Italy. Divided into 3 sectors, it preserves splendid polychrome mosaic floors. A small museum displays interesting remains, parts of statues, and portraits.

In a panoramic location, Rocca is a military fortification from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Garda. The large structure also contains “Casa del Podestà”, restored and improved at the beginning of the 20th century to become a House-Museum. The monumental library is of particular value.

ROCCA DI MANERBA CASTLE - CIVIC MUSEUM AND ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK

SANTUARIO MADONNA DEL CARMINE (SHRINE)

DUOMO DI SANTA MARIA ANNUNZIATA (CATHEDRAL)

Created thanks to the efforts of Fondazione Luciano Sorlini, it is an extraordinary collection of paintings hosted in an elegant 16th century palace. A fascinating themed visit itinerary highlights the dialogue between the most prevalent Venetian painters of the 18th century like Tiepolo, Ricci, Guardi, and Canaletto with locals like Bellini, Savoldo, and Pitocchetto.

The remains of the castle are in a spectacular position on a spur dominating the lake. Along the slope that takes to the Rocca is the Museum, whose galleries showcase local archaeological findings as well as landscapes and natural features of the region, including the prehistoric pile dwelling site (UNESCO).

Built in Late Lombardy Gothic style (15th century) the Shrine and its rustic architecture stand on a splendid terrace overlooking the lake. The interior, with single nave and gable roof, is decorated with frescoes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries whose figures and colours recall Mantegna, Foppa, and Perugino’s styles.

Located in the town’s historic centre, it was built between 1453 and 1502 in Late Gothic style. The door was built during the Renaissance period. The interior is divided into three naves and is an authentic art gallery. Of particular interest is the large 14th century cross by Giovanni Teutonico. There are also works by Romanino.

IL VITTORIALE DEGLI ITALIANI

ST. ANDREA MONUMENTAL CHURCH

NONII ARII ROMAN VILLA

A place for culture and events, the civic museum contains artistic and scientific collections that narrate the history of the city, an important centre during “Magnifica Patria”, the Venetian domination. A room with ancient musical instruments is dedicated to Gasparo da Salò, whose name is connected to the manufacturing of stringed instruments, in particular the violin.

Strongly wanted and created by Gabriele d’Annunzio with the collaboration of architect Maroni, Vittoriale is an eclectic ensemble of buildings, gardens, streets, squares, an outdoor theatre, and water streams created from 1921. A visit to the site enables you to understand the spirit of the famous poet/soldier who is buried in the Mausoleum.

Already documented in 1040 A.D., the current building dates from the 12th century and is a wonderful example of Lombard Romanesque architecture with Verona influences. The polychrome marble façade with the door decorated with plants, animals, and siren motifs is beautiful. The crypt contains the remains of St. Ercolanus in a sarcophagus.

Dating back to the 1st century A.D., the villa used to be on the lakefront and belonged to Brescia’s illustrious Nonii family, who had several properties on the lake. Only a few rooms of this imposing and luxurious residence are accessible today; they showcase important portions of wall decorations and mosaic floors.

PAPER MILL VALLEY - CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE - PAPER MUSEUM

SANTUARIO DI MONTE CASTELLO (MADONNA DELLA STELLA SHRINE)

Located in the wonderful Paper Mill Valley, the Museum venue is the old paper production complex, whose nucleus dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The building, modified several times to make room for new machines, is characterised by a tall chimney. Workshops and demonstrations enhance the visit to this site.

In a splendid position on a cliff overlooking the lake, it stands on the remains of an old temple turned castle. Inside, it preserves “Casa Santa”, a small temple estimated to have been built in 800 A.D. The interior boasts Giotto-style frescoes.
