SABBIA VALLEY ARCHEOLOGICAL CIVIC MUSEUM

IRON MUSEUM FUCINA DI PAMPARANE (FORGE)

Founded in 1039, the monastery, originally called St. Pietro in Monte, is located in a panoramic position on Mount Orsino (993 m. of altitude). Radically restructured in mid-15th century, it can be reached through a beautiful walk in the woods. The excavations have revealed important Upper Middle Age buildings and artifacts.

Important place of popular devotion, the shrine is a 16th century building enriched by gilded stuccoes and paintings of the Virgin Mary. It contains a wonderful piece by Moretto, commissioned specifically for the shrine, which faithfully depicts the story of the miracle that occurred in August 1952.

The museum was founded in 1956 and is hosted in an ancient 15th century building in the historic centre of Gavardo. The exhibition focuses on paleontology - fossils, stones, and animal skeletons-, local archeology, and the history of humankind from the Middle Paleolithic to Post Renaissance.

Built prior to the 18th century and extremely well preserved, the Museum is located in the historic centre of Odolo. You can admire two forges with hydraulic wheels, storage areas, a trompe, and other equipment. The exhibition is enhanced by remains and artifacts that illustrate the social and economic history of Odolo.

CHIESA DI S. ANDREA O DEI MORTI DI BARBAINE (CHURCH)

Build on a rock in a dominating position between the 9th and 10th centuries, this military fortress served its purpose as defensive site for the region until the 14th century, when it started to be transformed into a church. The religious structure is composed of two juxtaposed churches, giving it a very unique appearance.

The church, built in the 16th century, has one richly decorated nave, with barrel vault and side altars. The wooden engravings are wonderful; they are an expression of the artistic quality achieved by “Boscai”, a famous family of local wood carvers. It also displays one valuable piece by Moretto called “St. Antonio Abate.”

At 620 m. of altitude, on the banks of Tovere stream, the rests of the Furnace can be reached through a mule track descending from the village of Livemmo di Pertica Alta. The facility, in the past used to work iron extracted in nearby Trompia Valley, today has significant relevance in terms of archaeological industry.

Built in mid-14th century at the crossroads of three villages, the church is in Lombard Romanesque style. The façade is simple, with terracotta decorations. The single-nave interior displays frescoes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The monument to the Sabbia Valley Fallen of the Resistenza (Italian resistance movement) was erected inside the church.

MUSEO DELLA RESISTENZA E DEL FOLKLORE (MUSEUM)

ROCCA D’ANFO (FORTIFICATION)

FORTE DI CIMA ORA (FORT)

CHIESA DI SAN GIORGIO (CHURCH)

Located at the foot of Corna Blacca mountain, this one-of-a-kind museum in the province contains objects and documents pertaining, in particular, to “Brigata Partigiana Perlasca” (Perlasca resistance brigade), active in the area at the end of World War II. The folklore section is a window over local everyday life.

This fortified military complex built in the 15th century by the Republic of Venice and enlarged under Napoleon is unique in Italy due to its size and historic relevance. Composed of several structures connected by protective walls, it develops over one side of Mount Censo overlooking Lake Idro.

Large, imposing fortification on three floors dating from World War I, it is 1,548 m. over sea level and from his panoramic position it dominates Bagolino and Upper Caffaro Valley. The road leading to it is surrounded by vegetation and anticipates the imposing gate of the fort built with stonework or excavated into the rock.

Built in the 17th century on a rocky elevation, it was also called “Mountain Cathedral” for its large size. Inside are noteworthy works by Titian, Tintoretto, and Palma the Young. The altarpiece depicting St. George killing the dragon is by Celesti. The vault, frescoed by Tommaso Sandrini, reflects 17th century taste.
