rescia offers a wide range of opportunities for all those who love art and culture. You don’t have a lot of time? It doesn’t matter. Come and enjoy a weekend immersed in the beauty of this city of art which, in recent years, has registered record tourist flows and today offers international-level exhibitions, from sculpture to photography.

ROMAN BRESCIA

The symbol of Brescia is the Winged Victory sculpture, housed in the Santa Giulia Museum. Two Domus dell’Ortaglia (noble Roman houses recently discovered and perfectly restored) are also in the museum and enhance even further the interesting

and original museum collection. Nearby, the visit continues with the ‘fourth cell’ of the Capitolium, another jewel of rare beauty. These are remains of a sanctuary probably dating from the 1st century B.C.; it is a rather unique monument in the archeological landscape of northern Italy because it was built by experienced craftsmen whose job was to recreate the pomp and elegance of Rome as artistic and cultural reference. The visit continues with the Capitolium temple, built under Vespasianus between 73 and 74 A.D., behind which stands an ancient Roman Theatre, resting on the slope of the Cidneo Hill (69-96 A.D.). It could hold up to 15,000 spectators and was among the largest theatres in the region. Traces of Roman Brescia can also be found in Piazza Loggia square. The marbles that decorate the façade of the Monte di Pietà building (left, looking

at Palazzo Loggia), a charitable pawn institution that was opened in mid1400, are fragments of gravestones and inscriptions that celebrate the ancient origin of the city. A choice that indicates respect and foresight.

LOMBARD BRESCIA Since 2011, the site ‘Lombards in Italy. Places of the Power (568-774 A.D.) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A part of this multi-city site is the San Salvatore-Santa Giulia Monastery (a nunnery built by Brescia’s duke Desiderius in 753) and the monumental archeological area. The monastery welcomed pilgrims and housed the poor, but also had a fundamental religious, political, and economic role. It has three cloisters built in different periods of time, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Solario (with King Desiderius’ Cross), the Nun’s Choir, and the church of San Salvatore, one of the most important examples of Early Middle-Ages religious architecture. The complex houses the Santa Giulia Museum.

MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE BRESCIA The Old Cathedral or Rotunda (12th century) is a fascinating building and contains numerous artistic pieces. This is a very rare example of circular church and conveys a magical atmosphere. Noteworthy art is displayed in the church, including the 14th century sarcophagus of bishop Berardo Maggi and masterpieces by painters Moretto and Romanino. The adjacent Broletto Palace was the city government building in the Middle Ages and during Venetian rule (15th-18th centuries). This long domination is the reason why the symbol of Venice (the winged lion) is

IN THE BOWELS OF THE CITY Brescia Speleological Association organizes adventurous speleological excursions. Standard visits include towers, tunnels, walkways, and bastions of Brescia Castle, but the most expert speleologists can also join guided tours outside the city, for example to the caves in the Cariadeghe plateau. Brescia Underground Association offers visits to the city’s underground structures, to discover Brescia from a different, intriguing perspective.

DIOCESAN MUSEUM

profusely found in Brescia and around the province. Your visit continues with the Castle. The internal walls of this imposing fortified complex (75,000 sqm) were built by the noble Visconti family, who dominated the city starting from 1337. The castle houses the Luigi Marzoli Ams Museum and the Risorgimento Museum. The discovery of Renaissance Brescia starts in Piazza Loggia, a scenic reconstruction of a Venetian square in the Brescia region. The square dates from 1433 and is a symbol of the Venetian domination, with Palazzo Loggia city hall, Monti di Pietà charitable pawn institutions, and Torretta dell’Orologio, a clock tower where two automated statues strike the hours. Palazzo Loggia is supported by hundreds of poles, inserted into the ground centuries ago – the only construction technique that the Venetians knew.

The museum preserves and promotes the precious artistic belongings of the Dioceses, highlighting their historical and religious significance. The museum is in the cloister of the Monastery of San Giuseppe, in a small alley in the city centre, and gathers numerous works of art that come from all the corners of the province. There are paintings, sculptures, jewels, and vestments used during the Liturgy. The museum hosts sacred art exhibits of local artists.

SIRMIONE You will not forget a walk through Sirmione’s city centre. We are in the middle of the lake, on this narrow 4-kmlong peninsula on the tip of which stands the old town of Sirmione, inside the port and castle (13th century). The dynamic atmosphere of the medieval city centre is enhanced by the many fashion boutiques, gelato shops, restaurants, natural touches like the bougainvillea trees that give colour to the buildings, and outstanding lake views everywhere. The Romanesque church of San Pietro in Mavino and Catullus Grotto (the remains of a Roman Villa built in a panoramic spot) are among the most visited sites.

world regions’ showcasing sculptures of Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, and other artists. Nearby, the atmosphere of Vittoriale degli Italiani (house-museum of poet Gabriele D’Annunzio) introduces you to a fantastic setting where love, courage, and passions are intertwined. Back on the boat; reach Isola del Garda, an island with an imposing late 19th century villa and splendid Italian gardens. A stop to visit the island is a must. If you feel romantic, finish the day with a candle-lit cruise dinner on board a modern boat or old steamboats ‘Italia’ and ‘Zanardelli’.

THE LAKE SEEN FROM THE LAKE Rent a boat. Start from Sirmione and go around the peninsula to reach Desenzano, then follow the coast of the Valtenesi region until Salò, a town with a rich cultural history. Far from the traffic, you will enjoy the beauty of the landscape and relax while you get your tan. You will admire splendid Liberty villas along the lake, with the backdrop of gentle hills covered in olive trees and Mediterranean-type vegetation. SAILING ON THE LAKE

THE LAND OF LEMONS

Sirmione2, FragliaVela, Bogliaco, Garda Sailing... Not everyone knows the meaning of these names, except sailors, of course. Every town has a Sailing Club that offers sailing classes, organizes regattas, and where you can rent a sailboat. They also organize events and meetings. Everyone, including disabled people, children, and seniors, can find a suitable activity, whether it is just being cradled by the waves or competing in one of the many events organized during the year. If you want to watch the most famous regatta of all, come in September for the Centomiglia. Campione del Garda is a paradise for sailors and surfers. 300m above the tiny town a rock dominates the view; the wind attracts water sports lovers who mingle with local fishermen.

Up to the 19th century, Lake Garda lemon groves produced citrus fruit for the tables of all Europe. This industry is no longer present, but memories are still alive of this society whose fishing-based economy was complemented by lemon growing. There are several opportunities to rediscover this tradition: visit a museum, a photographic exhibition, or a lemon grove that still stands notwithstanding the passing of time and continuing residential expansion. Lemon groves can be found between Gargnano and Limone. The most significant are PrĂ de la Fam (Campione), Gandossi (Gargnano), and CastĂŠl (Limone).

LAKE GARDA

he most beautiful and important lake in Europe attracts visitors from all over the world. It boasts an impeccable tourism infrastructure, including renowned hotels, Liberty villas, and the magic of unique views. It is the first Mediterranean-style region that a visitor coming from the North encounters.

Start from Villa Romana (Desenzano) and Catullus’ Grotto (Sirmione), then reach Isola del Garda by boat for a visit to the villa and the English and Italian gardens. Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera is late poet Gabriele D’Annunzio’s housemuseum. It displays objects and relics that reflect his complex personality. End the day with some shopping in Salò, elegant town and theatre of significant historic events.

“Casa del Podestà” in the town of Lonato is a splendid 15th century building and the mansion of the Podestà (governors) during the Serenissima Republic of Venice. It contains the noteworthy collections of Senator Ugo da Como, a 19th-century Brescia scholar, which include the smallest book in the world. A pleasant stroll around the Rocca castle will provide

views of beautiful Lake Garda. Lonato’s historic centre is also worth a visit. In the 1400s, the town of Toscolano Maderno was the core paper production site for the Republic of Venice. This industry was a significant staple of Lake Garda’s economy for centuries. ‘The Paper Valley’ is crossed by the Toscolano creek which gave power to the paper mills, some of which have been restored alongside tools and buildings to create a unique indoor-outdoor museum. The Paper Museum is open to tourists and visitors who

want to discover the Paper Valley with the help of guides (oftentimes, former plant workers) who can show the different stages of paper production and enrich the narration with stories and anecdotes. Nature and mountain lovers can visit Valvestino for an unusual holiday in one of the traditional barns of the village of Magasa, restored to accommodate tourists who want to be in direct contact with the farming world. You are in Parco dell’Alto Garda (Upper Lake Garda Park), a true nature paradise and botanical garden. The area also has an Ethnographic Museum and the Cima Rest Astronomical Observatory. Discover the beauty of plants and flowers in the lake’s several historical and botanical gardens. The André Heller Foundation Botanic Garden in Gardone Riviera has fascinating flowerbed arrangements made with 3,000 worldwide species. Ghirardi Botanical Garden in Toscolano Maderno focuses on medicinal plants. Isola del Garda is the largest island in the lake. Guided tours

16

of the Italian gardens and the early 20th century villa are offered. An excursion to Parco dell’Alto Garda will immerse you into a beautiful natural setting and one of the best conservation areas on the lake, just a few minutes away from the most popular tourist destinations. Don’t forget your camera! Valtenesi is the land of Valtenesi wine. Wineries, oil mills, and traditional shops are delightful discoveries for the most demanding foodies. Taste Chiaretto wine in Moniga; it’s one of the most modern and interesting rosé wines. Lugana is produced south of Sirmione: it’s an internationally known local white wine and offers an excellent pairing option for lake fish or seafood. Another local DOC wine is San Martino della Battaglia, produced near Desenzano. These wines all have limited production and excellent quality. Halfway between the city and Lake Garda in Ciliverghe di Mazzano, Villa Mazzucchelli houses three interesting exhibits: the Museum of Fashion and Costume (a rich collection of clothes and accessories), Giammaria Mazzucchelli House-Museum, and the Museum of Wine and Corkscrews (tools and materials linked to vine cultivation and wine production, as well as wine tasting and consumption).

ROME AND THE MIDDLE AGES ON THE LAKE Catullus’ Grotto is what remains of a large Roman villa situated on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula. It is one of the most grandiose examples of private buildings in northern Italy. From its dominant position, it offers unparalleled lake views and attracts millions of tourists. The Roman itinerary continues in Desenzano with the remains of another villa and Museo Rambotti (with the oldest plough in the world: 2,000 B.C.), with the Romanesque

parish churches of Sant’Andrea in Maderno, Sant’Emiliano in Padenghe, and San Francesco in Gargnano, till the Sanctuary of Montecastello in Tignale.

THE PLACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF SALÒ A more recent historical itinerary includes the area where the Italian Social Republic, or Republic of Salò, was founded at the end of World War II. Today, most of the historical buildings in Toscolano Maderno, Salò, and Gargnano have become magnificent hotels and public offices. This is the opportunity for a true journey through art, architecture, and contemporary history.

TOWER OF SAN MARTINO A 74m tower stands among the hills surrounding Lake Garda. This building, decorated with frescoes depicting the Risorgimento Wars, is dedicated to the battle of San Martino and Solferino in 1859. The violent battle (39 thousand men were incapacitated to fight, 11 thousand died, and 23 thousand were injured) inspired Jean-Henry Dunant, who founded the Red Cross. Every year, the battle is reenacted.

THE PAPER VALLEY From the 1400s and until a few decades ago, this valley in the municipality of Toscolano produced paper, in particular for the Serenissima Republic of Venice. The evoking landscape, which those who follow the nearby coastal road don’t even imagine is there, and the richness of historical remains attract several visitors. The visit includes buildings, the paper museum, and the surrounding natural area, full of steep slopes and narrow

This cheese has an intense golden colour (due to the use of saffron) and is only produced with milk coming from the Bagolino area. Only the cheese factory cooperative or the factories in the lower valley can make Bagoss. The connection

between product and region becomes the opportunity for a historical and gastronomic journey. The best times to visit are summertime and February, during the traditional Carnival celebrations which date from the 16th century.

THE QUIET LAKE Lake Idro attracts those who love nature and the environment. Its shores evoke a sense of quietness, ideal for families seeking relaxation. In fact, there are many young tourists who come to practice paragliding, canyoning, rock climbing, and other adventurous sports, but also tennis, horseback riding, sailing, and windsurfing. Sabbia Valley offers great scenic variety: high mountains covered with forests (up to 2,000m), unique fauna and vegetation, and the highest lake in Lombardy at 370m above sea level.

A CASTLE BY THE LAKE A nice hike takes you to Rocca d’Anfo, a fortification built between 1450 and 1490. Napoleon had it demolished in 1796, but it was rebuilt in 1813, strengthened, and used for defensive purposes. It was then used as stronghold by Garibaldi’s army while he was fighting against the Austrians during the Italian Independence Wars. Today, the Rocca is undergoing restoration work and it offers the opportunity for a panoramic hike surrounded by nature and history.

CHRISTO’S LAKE

The memory of Floating Piers is still vivid. This 2016 installation by artist Christo consisted in 3km of floating piers that connected the Brescia coast of the lake to Montisola and San Paolo islands. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world walked on them. Take the ferry boat and reach Montisola. This is the largest lake island in Europe

TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY While you are vacationing on Lake Iseo, follow an unusual itinerary touching local shipyards. Some traditional workshops, those of Montisola for example, still employ crafted master shipwrights who build yachts, small fishing boats, and sports boats. You can visit the shipyard, the fishing museum, and then walk or take the bus to the Madonna della Ceriola Sanctuary at the top of the mountain to admire a full view of the lake.

BIRD-WATCHING One of Europe’s main bird-watching paradises is Torbiere del Sebino peat moss reserve, on the outskirts of the town of Iseo. Many bird species live or stop here during their migration. Wear comfortable shoes

as the paths are not paved, although they are accessible to everyone, even baby buggies. Either alone or accompanied by expert guides, bring your binoculars and have fun!

ZONE ROCK PYRAMIDS Walk in nature until you reach the ‘fairy chimneys’, singular clay columns standing in the middle of a green valley north of lake Iseo. Wear sports gear and trekking shoes. This path is easy, safe, and accessible to everyone.

The silence of nature and the romantic walk create emotions and are conducive to meditation. You walk and admire fascinating views, forgetting for a moment the effort it takes to climb some steep slopes, which are nonetheless accessible to everyone. This is a popular activity because of the gentle beauty around you.

VIA VALERIANA, BETWEEN THE LAKE AND THE VALLEY The ancient pilgrim route that connected Brescia to the Camonica Valley starts from Pisogne and ends in Pilzone d’Iseo. It dates back to the 15th century and has a still-functioning water-powered wheel which moves the forge and allows demonstrations of how iron was worked. The forge is part of a fascinating complex of rural buildings in Borgo del Maglio where it is possible to discover the culture and experience that centuries of craftsmanship have created.

Pick your favorite, following the advice of wine makers, sommeliers, and experts working for the local Wine Routes (Strada del Vino e dei Sapori del Garda, Strada del Franciacorta,

and Strada Colli dei Longobardi). Extra-virgin olive oil is produced on the hills of both Lake Garda and Lake Iseo. Oil is a true ambassador of this land, because of its high quality and low acidity level. You don’t need to specify ‘extravirgin’ here, just say oil and an excellent local product will be brought to you. This is the same oil used to prepare every local dish. Micro-productions worth mentioning are saffron, lemons and limoncello, cured meat, local grappa, and caviar. Yes, few people know that Brescia

is the largest producer of caviar in the world! Discover the flavours and colours of our oil, wine, and cheese joining a tasting offered at stores, restaurants, and even mountain huts during an excursion. If you really are a foodie, why not enhance your holiday with a cooking class. Courses range from few hours to some days and there are options for both amateurs/beginners and national and international professionals. Your teacher will be a renowned chef or even a European pastry champion.

DISCOVERING BRESCIA | PROPOSALS FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS

INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL From April to June, Teatro Grande in Brescia and Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo host one of the main world piano events. The most famous soloists (Benedetti Michelangeli, Richter, Arrau, Radu Lupu, Argerich), directors (Rostropovich, Ughi, Pavarotti, Muti, Abbado, Solti, Maazel, Chung), orchestras (Berliner, Wiener Philharmoniker, Chicago, London, Philadelphia, Tel Aviv, San Pietroburgo, Scala…).

X GIORNATE DI BRESCIA From morning to night, in September, world renowned artists and young talents narrate stories with the universal language of music ‘as you have never

seen it’. This is a modern, surprising journey through classical and jazz music: it is not every day that you can sip a cappuccino listening to a jam session of young and prominent artists. The city is literally contaminated with music and cultural events scattered in city theatres and squares, which create a fascinating backdrop and revive the emotions that ‘give a past to our future’. This can only be achieved through the magic of a great concert.

OPERA FEST One of the most innovative and engaging events in Brescia is Opera Fest. It attracts the old and the young, opera lovers and not, along emotional itineraries at the discovery of Opera. In September, from morning to midnight, the city resonated with the notes of the most famous arias to bring the charm of opera to the streets of the city. Hundreds of artists perform in more than 50 corners of the city for tens of thousands of attendees. This event unites everyone, elites and crowds.
