utler has a rich history shaped by immigrants and industries, providing opportunities to learn and appreciate how the community has changed and adapted through the years. Did you know that Kelly Automotive Park, formerly Pullman Park, was host to minor league teams such as the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates for almost 20 years? A mix of history, arts and community events makes our county seat charming. Preserving the past is important here in Butler. Named after General Richard Butler, a Revolutionary War military leader, his legacy is remembered not only by the name of our county and county seat, but with a mural located in downtown Butler. Since its founding in 1800, Butler has enjoyed a rich manufacturing heritage and business climate, reflected in the steel, glass, oil, gas and automotive industries that brought so much economic success to the region. The city’s interesting automotive history includes the start of six automobiles — Russell-Sherman, Huselton and Standard (shown above), American Austin, American Bantam and the Bantam Jeep. One of Butler’s claims to fame is the birthplace of the original Jeep. In 1940, the U.S. Army asked over 100 tractor and auto manufacturers to design a four-wheel drive, 16 2018 Official Visitors Guide / VisitButlerCounty.com / 866-856-8444

40-horsepower, 1,200-pound reconnaissance car that could haul soldiers as well as heavy artillery, and requested a working prototype within 49 days. With only two companies responding to the request, the American Bantam Car Company won the contract and created the Jeep that was responsible for making American forces mobile during WWII. Butler Historical Society in downtown Butler houses artifacts representing the monumental impact these industries made on the city.
Although the past is often celebrated, excitement lies in new developments like the continuing revitalization of the city’s Main Street and more. Butler has emerged as an ‘artsy’ town, bursting with vibrant color and creativity adding a fresh perspective to daily life. The city is full of local artists, from painters and sculptors to actors and musicians, and there are many fantastic venues to display and promote their crafts. Exhibits and performing arts events establish a lively cultural atmosphere in the streets of Butler. Restaurants that use local ingredients from nearby farms are frequent, as well as breweries with the same ‘local’ mentality, all helping to stimulate the local economy. It’s businesses like these that bring new energy to the city. From movie scenes shot in Butler buildings to athletes who played for the New York Yankees farm team, Butler has seen many famous faces over the years. Do you know who was recently caught filming in Butler? See if you can spot the Butler County Courthouse in the Netflix series, “Mindhunter.” As downtown Butler continues to revitalize, take a stroll through the county seat to dine, shop, explore and see why Butler has been recognized as one of the very best small towns.

n July of 1887, Standard Plate Glass of Butler began production of sheets of plate glass that put Butler in the global marketplace for glass. The Butler location was chosen because of the proximity of natural gas, which was necessary for the process. Glassworkers from Belgium, France, Germany and England came to work in the new plant. Between 1887 and 1902 a minimum of 80 of these immigrants became naturalized U.S. citizens in Butler County. In 1903 Standard Steel Car Company was opened in Butler. This state-of-the-art factory was designed to build all steel railroad cars on a standardized assembly line, the first of its kind in the world. Men who came to make their fortune in this plant were mostly young men from Eastern Europe. Lyndora, adjacent to the plant and Butler, was named for the daughter of one of the founders of Standard Steel Car. Immigrants came from Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary and other countries in Eastern Europe. While most sent money home, they also brought their families to Butler County and supported their new community’s churches and local businesses. The many stories of these 20th century immigrants are told in the surviving domed churches of Lyndora. There were once 12 to 15 churches there, but only four remain in use today. As workers’ finances grew, they built new houses on streets above Hansen Avenue, and many families eventually moved to the nearby communities of Highfield or Meridian. Standard Steel Car merged with the Pullman Company in 1934. The great Pullman-Standard works was closed in 1982 after the company was sold. However, Lyndora and Butler County remain enriched by the culture and heritage of the skilled hundreds, perhaps thousands, of immigrants once employed at the world’s largest freight car plant.
Cranberry Township
Cranberry Township is considered Butler County’s most bustling region, and when you see the bright lights, shops, restaurants and hotels lining the streets, you’ll know why.

lthough the township is more than 200 years old, it has grown immensely and is one of the fastest growing regions of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. With community parks, quality programs, a top-notch golf course and endless things to do, it’s an excellent destination for residents and visitors alike, and it’s no surprise the number of people who call Cranberry Township home continues to increase. One reason for the town’s tremendous growth is its location. Serving as the intersection of the PA Turnpike, I-79, Routes 19 and 228, Cranberry Township is accessible from virtually anywhere, providing tremendous potential for businesses. Recognized as a great place to raise a family, the township has a diversity network that encourages and welcomes residents of all backgrounds. Dick’s Sporting Goods Complex at Graham Park has walking trails, a large variety of fields and sports courts and much more! The most recent addition is the Pirates Charities Miracle League Field, specially designed and engineered to give special needs children and adults the opportunity to play baseball in a safe and controlled environment. The handicap accessible diamond has an all-weather, rubberized and flat surface that doesn’t interfere with wheelchairs, crutches or walkers. The Miracle League All-Star Game will take place here in 2018. North Boundary Park is exceptionally busy in the summertime, offering a newly-designed waterpark and upcoming Nature Trail & Championship Disc Golf Course, the town’s Community Chest Project of the Year. The Streets of Cranberry features a variety of shops, restaurants and specialty stores for all to enjoy. 50 Years of Zombies… and they Keep Coming Back!
F
or a small town, Evans City has played a significant role in history. In 1915 the city experienced the great oil boom, with 140 wells drilled in approximately 40 acres and soon became known as the “City of Black Gold.” It brought wealth for many, but only lasted two years due to the large number of wells in such a small area. You can find more information on the town’s history at the Evans City Historical Society. But perhaps the town’s most modernday ‘claim to fame’ is the filming location for George Romero’s 1968 classic hit, “Night of the Living Dead.” Signs leading you into Evans City reference the town’s rich history of its oil boom and the occasional zombie invasion. While you’re here and if you’re hungry, stop by Sports & Spirits for some of the area’s best chicken wings, but don’t fill up because you’ll want to save room for the goodies at Wendereusz’s Candy & More.

“Night of the Living Dead,” the movie responsible for the zombie apocalypse we know and love, turns 50 this year. This film is special to Butler County, as Evans City is home of the eerie, ghoul-filled cemetery where the opening sequence was shot! Romero and his small filmmaking group created this monumental film, having no idea it would be so well-received by its audience and become a cult classic. “Night of the Living Dead” and its unique style became a huge success. It was a defining moment for the horror film genre, bringing horror to life with the power of visual media.
George A. Romero was nicknamed ‘Father of the Zombie Film’ and has inspired numerous filmmakers and artists in popular culture, including those of the hit show, “The Walking Dead.” Evans City has embraced its ghoulish past and is home to the Night of the Living Dead Museum and Gift Shop, housing many props and memorabilia from the original film and Romero’s other zombie films. This one-of-a-kind museum is a unique treat in Butler County, serving those with haunting curiosities and celebrating the history of zombies through cinema. Its annual ‘Living Dead Weekend’
brings zombie-lovers together for exclusive film screenings, film location tours and even celebrity guest appearances from those who starred in Romero’s films. The museum also serves to pay tribute to George A. Romero and his influence on modern horror cinema, because after all, the zombie as we know it today would not have been possible without him.

his quaint village of old brick and log buildings is one of western Pennsylvania’s most historically important places and is listed as a National Historic Landmark District. Founded in 1804 by German Lutheran Separatists, George Rapp led the group who came to America seeking religious freedom. The Harmonists, who believed Christ’s return was imminent, adopted celibacy to remain spiritually pure, but this also ensured the group’s eventual demise. After two hundred years, the society lives on through the historic architecture, landmarks, cemeteries and events that celebrate its heritage. More than 50 buildings have been preserved. Nine of these buildings are operated by the Harmony Museum, which celebrates its 75th year of operation. Another belief of the Harmonists can be seen in their

f you’re wondering if there’s life on Mars, the answer is yes, and it’s closer than you may think! Complete with a flying saucer parked in the town square, the residents of Mars, PA, take full advantage of their town’s unique name. Alien sightings occur daily in storefront windows of small businesses that line Main Street, and letters postmarked from Mars, PA, are frequently mailed around the world. Like most small towns, community life often revolves around events at Mars School District, home of the Planets. In 2015, Mars created a new event to celebrate the planet Mars’ New Year. This two-day festival attracts thousands of visitors into the downtown area, along with representatives from NASA. The town of Mars hosts this event every two years since it takes Mars almost twice as long as Earth to orbit the sun. NASA continues to set up displays and conduct educational programs focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). They also send scientists and astronauts to join in on the festivities. Don’t miss the next Mars New Year, happening in 2019!

Try your luck opening the cemetery’s one-ton stone gate that revolves evenly on its center. You’ll find it’s easier than it sounds! Today, thousands of visitors flock to Harmony for their annual events like the WeihnachtsMarkt (German Christmas Market) and the Silvester New Year’s Eve Celebration, where you can ring in the New Year on German time at 6 p.m. in remembrance of the founders’ heritage. If you enjoy unique “food finds” or a great cup of coffee, then you’ll really love Harmony! The coffee is locally roasted and freshly brewed at Wunderbar Coffee & Crepes. Critically acclaimed, their sweet and savory crepes are a real crowdpleaser and are made with buckwheat flour produced from a local mill, Zanella Milling. Next door you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome at Two Fraus Bakery, serving freshly baked breads and not your

You can also enjoy dinner under the stars on their outdoor patio and bar area that features a giant fireplace. Don’t be alarmed by the ghosts! Other popular activities include perusing art and specialty shops like Penn Pantry, Creative Harmony Arts & Books and Darn Yarn Needles and Thread, adding even more charm to this quaint and historic village. So, how did Mars get its name? Possibly suggested by a lover of astronomy, or named for a prominent resident and honorable judge, Sam Marshall; most people believe the latter. The Pittsburgh and Western Railroad ran through Mars, building the Mars Station in 1987, and serving the community by transporting freight and passengers for nearly 50 years. The Mars Station was relocated and restored by the Mars Historical Society, making it the last station still standing from the now defunct Pittsburgh and Western Railroad. Also moved and restored was an original Adams Township trolley stop and a 1926 Railroad caboose. The Historical Society also operates a scaleddown version of the Mars Shortline Railroad, available to ride for all ages. Did you know that the film “Kingpin” was filmed at Mars Lanes? So why not make a quick trip to Mars? You’ll find unique sights, great photo opportunities, a historic train station and unearthly souvenirs that all help to make the town of Mars truly ‘out of this world.’

The German influence is clear, but what do Saxonburg and ‘the Big Apple’ have in common? John A. It’s also home to a restored train station dating back to the early 1900s, a historic graveyard guarded by a revolving one-ton stone gate and Asian art and German Meissen porcelain. It’s hard to believe that all of these intriguing pieces of history, along with many more, reside in a single county. Washington’s Trail 1753
I
n 1753, the imperial nations of France and Great Britain and the Native Americans all claimed control of the Ohio Country, the area encompassing present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Acting on orders from Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie, twenty-oneyear-old George Washington embarked upon a dangerous expedition north from Williamsburg to deliver a diplomatic message to the French ordering them to evacuate the region. Already the French had erected three forts to reinforce their claim to the area: Fort Presque Isle (Erie, PA), Fort LeBoeuf (Waterford, PA) and Fort Machault (Franklin, PA). During his journey to the French forts in the winter of 1753-1754, young Washington encountered many hazards. There were excessive rains and vast quantities of snow. He was nearly shot by an Indian guide and nearly drowned in the icy waters of the Allegheny River near present-day Pittsburgh. When Washington returned to Williamsburg in January 1754, he reported to the governor that the French intended to remain entrenched in the Ohio Country. This marked the beginning of the military struggle known as the French and Indian War. Blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette mark a commemorative trail throughout western Pennsylvania. (The trail is considered commemorative, as sections of the actual path are open to debate.) Relive Washington’s first military expedition with Butler County Tourism’s Washington’s Trail Brochure, which will guide you along the drive-it-yourself tour, offering interesting history about this mission. There are also plenty of historical and natural attractions along the way!
An original Bantam has a new home at the Bureau
B
utler is known as the birthplace of the Jeep, but its automotive history goes much deeper. Skip to the early 1930s, when the American Austin Car Company had a vision to build small, English-style cars in America. Aiming for a simple, fuel-efficient and attractive automobile, the company was soon reorganized under the name American Bantam where the design was revised and modernized. It produced a variety of small and economical options for car buyers, and although these weren’t top qualities for people back then, the combination of reasonable engine power and stylish design still made it a signature car to many. Fewer than 7,000 Bantam cars were produced from 1937-1941, making them truly rare to see among the millions of cars on the road today. The Bureau was recently given a chance to get behind the wheel of an all-American original, and it couldn’t be passed up. We purchased an original 1939 American Bantam Roadster from a man named George Roman, who had a desire to keep the vehicle in its home county. After purchasing the Bantam in 1960, Roman fixed it up and took it to car cruises, giving people an up-close look at its beauty. Watching kids’ eyes light up as they sat behind the wheel took him back to when he was a young boy, tugging on his mom’s arm as a unique car passed by. Roman’s childhood dream of owning a classic car became a reality when he purchased the Bantam Roadster, along with a 1939 Bantam pickup truck that he plans to fix up. By preserving antique automobiles like these to share with locals and tourists alike, Butler’s rich automotive story continues to live on, and the Bureau is excited to give this original Bantam a new home. You can catch us cruisin’ around town during local events! 25

Today, however, no such visible evidence of the Ice Age exists at Moraine State Park, a state park in Portersville that was established in 1970. Consisting of a sprawling 16,725 acres, the beauty of the park, intertwined with the abundance of outdoor
activities, make it one of the most visited attractions in the county at any time of the year. Moraine is heaven-on-earth for those who would rather be outside than anywhere else. For the sports-minded, there is disc golf, fishing, hunting, and 20 miles of horseback riding trails. In the winter, opportunities for sledding, cross-country skiing, iceskating, and snowmobiling are plentiful.
The crown jewel of Moraine State Park is Lake Arthur, a shimmering sapphire inland sea that draws swimmers, windsurfers, and boaters alike. Two sandy beaches, Pleasant Valley Beach and the smaller Lakeview Beach, comprise a total of 1750 square feet, alongside 42 miles of shoreline.

hose famous words by naturalist and conservationist John Muir should inspire anyone to take to the woods for a good oldfashioned hike. Fortunately, visitors to Butler County have the world at their feet when it comes to blazing a trail, or at least walking on one.
North Country Trail is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, a system of trails that extends over 4,600 miles across seven states, from the Adirondacks in New York to the western plains of North Dakota. The Butler County portion of the trail passes through Moraine State Park, treating hikers to views of the alluring waters of Lake Arthur. In fact, the downstream face of the Lake Arthur dam is only viewable on this section of the trail, which
ultimately connects to Jennings Nature Reserve. Other parts of the scenic trail pass through State Game Lands 95 and along the North Fork of Bear Creek and over the Dead Crow Bridge. Hikers who take a walk on the wild alongside this East Section of the trail will see wildlife and wildflowers; the trail winds through a hemlock forest and will pass stone arch bridges and historic oil industry remnants. S
ituated on 300 acres in Brady Township, Jennings Environmental Education Center features the only public protected prairie system in Pennsylvania. Known as the relict prairie ecosystem, this 20-acre attraction boasts such prairie plants as the blazing star, a prairie flower quite uncommon in the commonwealth. These majestic stalks of purple flowers are quite a sight in the summer months. In fact, Jennings was the first state reserve established specifically to protect an individual plant species, and it is the eastern-most prairie in the U.S. The area is also home to the endangered massasauga rattlesnake.

Famous Names
Perhaps you’ve visited Preston Park, Todd Nature Reserve, and Jennings Environmental Center, but have you wondered about the origin of their names?
W. E. Clyde Todd
The center’s two-fold attraction is revealed in its name: the center provides education about the environment, one of only several state parks in Pennsylvania to serve that purpose. Environmental education classes are geared toward students from pre-school through college-aged and cover such topics as fossils, trees, ecosystems, coal mine investigations, maple sugaring, and interpretive trail walks and talks. A five-mile system of trails meanders through various terrain, with the opportunity for hikers to experience diverse habitats. Birdwatchers especially will be happy to learn that there is an abundance of bird species that fly over the center regularly. In fact, Jennings is part of
Society for the purposes of using it as a perpetual wildlife sanctuary. At that time, the land consisted of about 75 acres. Once it was in the hands of the Society, it became its first bird sanctuary as well as the first parcel of land they owned. Over the years, additional tracts of land were added, either by purchase or donation.
A devoted ornithologist, Walter Edmond Clyde Todd served as the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s first Curator of Birds in 1914, after working with the museum for over 15 years, collecting bird specimens. Even after he retired in 1945, he continued to visit the museum every day. As a result of a lifetime of traveling to study and research birds, Todd published several books on ornithology. Eventually, he served as a fellow emeritus of the American Ornithologists’ Union (now the American Ornithological Society).
Originally called Todd Sanctuary, the name was recently changed to Todd Nature Reserve.
Todd’s passion for winged creatures resulted in a gift to Butler County: in 1942, he donated a parcel of land to the Audubon

invaluable contributions to the environment, but together they were instrumental in the creation of Moraine State Park. Maurice Goddard himself, who served for 24 years as a cabinet officer for several governors of PA, was responsible for helping to establish 45 Pennsylvania state parks; he also formed the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. Otto Emery Jennings was a botanist and a professor at the University of Pittsburgh; he also worked as a curator in the botany section of the Carnegie Museum. Jennings conducted field and laboratory research on native plants and was actively involved with the Botanical Society of Western Pennsylvania. Frank Preston owned Preston Laboratories. Preston was one of the dedicated environmentalists who helped to build an organization that would conserve and protect the region’s natural resources. In 1932, the Greater
Pittsburgh Parks Association was born. Today, that organization is known as Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. In 1952, they acquired land that would culminate in the creation of Jennings Nature Reserve, now known as Jennings Environmental Education Center and named after Otto Emery Jennings. In the early 1960s, the conservancy acquired acreage along Muddy Creek that was the starting point for Moraine State Park. Preston was instrumental in mapping out that area’s topography; the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy helped to reclaim the land. Preston worked tirelessly on the Moraine State Park project, aided by Goddard and Jennings. Jennings would accompany Preston on field walks, collecting data about what would become Lake Arthur, while Goddard, who spoke at the dedication of Moraine State Park in 1970, helped garner support for the park’s creation.

O
ne of two Butler County parks operated by the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society, Succop Nature Park, formerly Succop Conservancy, is dispersed over 50 acres of woodlands, gardens and fields. immigrants in the early 1800s and eventually ended up in the Succop family, who were instrumental in planting many of the trees on the grounds. In 2001, after both elder Succops had passed away, their children donated the estate to the Butler County Community College Education Foundation; the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania assumed control in 2011. The Audubon Society continues the educational mission by offering classes to the public on-site, such as those geared toward homeschooled students, scouting events or summer camps. Regular outdoorsy events are also held on the grounds; past events have included extreme croquet, maple madness, night campfires and hikes, a frog watch program and live music. The park is not desolate in the winter; past winter happenings have included a presentation about ice fishing, a guided winter walkabout to look for signs of life, and a Christmas bird count, all led by naturalists.

Free, guided birdwatching tours are offered regularly; lucky visitors might catch a glimpse of field sparrows, common yellowthroats, indigo buntings or kingbirds. With so much natural beauty in surround “sound,” it is little wonder that the 170-year old mansion onsite is a popular venue for weddings and other special events.
Todd Nature Reserve
T
odd Nature Reserve, also operated by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, is located in Sarver and provides an abundance of scenic hiking trails alongside streams and ponds. It is an essential part of Pennsylvania Audubon’s Buffalo Valley Important Bird Area program. These sites that have been designated as significant regions in the commonwealth for bird conservation efforts. The area is known to be a habitat for a myriad of bird species, such as the Kentucky warbler and the pileated woodpecker. In fact, more than 180 species of birds have been documented. During the warmer months, the Audubon Society holds naturalist-led free “Birds and More Walks” through the reserve.
During the nature walks, visitors might also spot deer, unique species of plants or even an occasional bear. Birds are not the only attraction at Todd Nature Reserve. Outdoor lovers will find five rugged, often muddy, miles of well-marked hiking trails through rustic forests, some of which are lined by hemlock trees. Hikers may also cross a murmuring stream and encounter a man-made pond. The reserve is intentionally primitive, the paths seemingly isolated, the air remarkably undisturbed, heightening the genuinely natural experience for visitors. Todd Nature Reserve is the one of the oldest of its kind in the Commonwealth, having just turned 75 in 2017.
Preston Park
A
hidden gem in plain view, Preston Park has a rich history that is only matched by its lush beauty. Named after Frank Preston, an English-born conservationist and expert in glass technology who was instrumental in founding the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Preston Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Preston lived on the grounds and utilized the space for his research; his widow donated the property to Butler Township in 2011.
Preston Park is an English garden that covers almost 90 acres. The property boasts 40 types of evergreen trees, located in the Arboretum, the largest concentration of its kind east of the Mississippi. Many other unique plants dot the landscape. After the property became public, various volunteer groups and organizations have come together to act as stewards of the park by doing things like adding trail signs and a butterfly habitat. In addition to admiring the park’s natural beauty, and perhaps coming across Canadian geese, outdoor enthusiasts will find much to do, such as hiking trails, fishing ponds, crosscountry skiing, and birdwatching. Guided tours of the park are offered at various times throughout the year. Hikers can also hike to the adjacent park, Sawmill Run. One unique feature of Preston Park is a compass rose that indicates directions to different cities around the world... and even the distance to the Equator (2823 miles) and the South Pole (9,030 miles). A second compass rose is by the pond. Dr. Preston’s laboratory and home are onsite and are available for guided tours. For low-key enjoyment of Preston Park, there are designated picnic spots, as well as outdoor theater in the warmer weather.

The 50-acre, man-made lake and the surrounding 100-acre property had been a treasure in the Butler community since 1955, a beautiful boating destination with a relaxing atmosphere for locals and tourists alike. funding for the project. Sigmund “Siggy” Pehel, President of GRLC, and the rest of the Conservancy members worked tirelessly to raise funds, as allowing the lake to disappear was never an option. The restoration of Glade Run Lake displays the outcome of a grassroots group in a small community uniting toward a common cause and meshing their individual talents together to make a difference. As Pehel said, “A commitment to a focused goal can overcome the inevitable pushback to a seemingly insurmountable challenge that we hear in the words, ‘no we can’t.’ It’s all about getting involved in any way you can.” Included in the rehabilitation was the construction of a handicapped accessible fishing pier, as well as the installation of habitat structures in the lake for osprey, turtles and other creatures. An Eagle Scout project enhanced and preserved surrounding trails around the lake.

Glade Run Lake offers fishing and motorless boating to tens of thousands of yearly visitors and brings in $1.2 million annually to the local economy. The scope of this restoration project went beyond Butler County, as Glade Run provides economic and environmental benefits to the entire region. As Pehel summarized this victory, seeing all of the smiling faces at the ribbon cutting ceremony and when visiting the restored lake made all of the hard work worthwhile. The reopening of the Glade Run Lake has proven the power of the people, but the work of GRLC doesn’t end here. Ongoing preservation and improvement of Glade Run remains the mission of this group, encouraging the use of its lake and land for outdoor recreation, environmental conservation and education.

Butler-Freeport Community Trail Butler County’s only Rails-to-Trails trail The Butler-Freeport Community Trail is a rail-trail, preserving the route of Butler County’s first railroad (1871), the Western Pennsylvania Railroad, which connected the City of Butler to the Allegheny River port of Freeport. As a rails-to-trails project, the 21-mile trail offers a level, natural crushed limestone surface with a gradual uphill grade as it travels north (barely noticeable to walkers) and the converse downhill grade as it travels south (greatly enjoyed by bicyclists). Dogs are welcome but required to be on a leash and under the control of the person walking them on the trail.
