Kid’s Choice Awards When it comes to kids, they generally know what they like to do and where they want to go. So we thought we’d get their opinion on a few of their favorite spots in Butler County and why they enjoy them. Here’s what they said: Cranberry Township Community Park “I like to go to the park because I like to climb on the obstacles at the playground.” Cranberry Township’s Community Park offers Kid’s Castle Playground, a fantasy world of sights, sounds and play equipment specifically designed for children ages two through 12, baseball fields, a dog park and an amphitheater used for outdoor movies and concerts. The Snowman “I like going to The Snowman to get a green apple Yeti (shaved ice with ice cream).” The Snowman is a popular roadside attraction in Portersville. The menu selection offers something for everyone, and the best-seller is the Yeti. Select any one of their 24 flavors of shaved ice combine it with ice cream and whipped cream on top and that’s a Yeti! Get Air Pittsburgh “I like Get Air because I can jump around with my friends.” Get Air Pittsburgh is an indoor trampoline park located in Zelienople. It features wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball and a ninja obstacle course.
Cranberry Community Waterpark “I enjoy going to Cranberry Waterpark because I like to swim in their big pool, get food from the Snack Shack and hang out with my friends.” Cranberry Community Waterpark is a great way to cool down and enjoy summertime fun! You can whisk down water slides, dip into their diving well, scale a water climbing wall and get soaked by a giant dump bucket. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest “I enjoy camping at Jellystone Park because it has lots of fun stuff like a swimming pool, playground, cabins and fun activities.” Yogi Bear’s award-winning Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest is one of Butler County’s most popular campgrounds. You can roll out the sleeping bags or rent cabins; either way you’ll be surrounded by tall trees and beautiful scenery. With tons of amenities and activities for the kids, this campground offers fun for the whole family. Moraine State Park “My favorite things to do at Moraine State Park are renting pontoon boats, going to the beach and fishing.” Moraine State Park is the county’s biggest attraction and sees over two million visitors a year. The park is over 16,000 acres and offers a variety of activities for year-round enjoyment like swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, biking, boating, cross-country skiing and more! Playthings Etc. Family Toys & Hobbies “I like Playthings because I can look at and play with lots of toys.” Playthings Etc. is known as “The World’s Coolest Toy Store.” Inside this stealth-shaped steel building are awesome toys where playing is encouraged. This shop will let your little ones try the toys, so it’s actually more like a giant playground. Discover 3,000+ playthings, from mindbending science to throwbacks from when you were a kid. The aquaponics garden was created in conjunction with Slippery Rock University and is located in the North Country Brewing production facility in Slippery Rock. Students will have a hands-on learning experience with eco-systems while growing produce for the restaurants. So what is aquaponics— it’s a soilless water conserving farming system. Fish and plants grow together in one integrated system; solid fish waste is turned into vermicompost that acts as food for the plants.

he town of Evans City might look familiar to you, especially if you’re a zombie fan. George Romero’s 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead was filmed here. In fact, the opening scene was shot in the Evans City Cemetery. In 1973, Romero returned to Evans City to film The Crazies, a movie in which the town was blown up! Evans City has embraced its ghoulish past and is home to the Night of the Living Dead Museum and Gift Shop, housing many props and memorabilia from the original film and Romero’s other zombie films. This one-ofa-kind museum is a unique stop in Butler County, appealing to those with haunting curiosities and celebrating the history of zombies through cinema. The town’s annual ‘Living Dead Weekend’ is yet another way Romero’s legendary film is revered. This unique event brings zombie-lovers together for exclusive movie screenings, film location tours and celebrity guest appearances from those who starred in Romero’s films. Today, Evans City proudly honors its past with wooden zombie silhouettes, and its nickname, “City of Black Gold,” referring to a 1915 oil boom. Historic Harmony
Discover the rich history of Historic Harmony, the site of western Pennsylvania’s first National Historic Landmark District.
L
ike most visitors, this quaint village will captivate you with its old brick and log buildings. Harmony was founded in 1804 by German Lutheran Separatists seeking religious freedom. The Harmonists, who believed Christ’s return was imminent, adopted celibacy to remain spiritually pure, but this also ensured the group’s eventual demise. After two hundred years, the society lives on through the historic architecture, landmarks, cemeteries and events that celebrate the town’s heritage. This charming town retains the old-world architectural character of an old German village and includes more than 50 buildings, nine of which are owned by the nonprofit historical society and preservation group, Historic Harmony. Another belief of the Harmonists can be seen in their cemetery located just outside of town—you won’t find any grave markers for the approximately 100 society members buried there. If you go for a visit, try your luck opening the cemetery’s
one-ton stone gate that revolves evenly on its center. Every year, thousands of visitors attend events like the WeihnachtsMarkt (German Christmas Market) and the Silvester New Year’s Eve Celebration, where you can ring in the New Year on German time at 6 p.m. in remembrance of the founder’s heritage. Harmony is not only filled with incredible and sometimes unusual history but lots of “foodie finds” as well. You’ll find cozy coffee shops like Wunderbar Coffee & Crepes, delicious bakeries such as Lagerhaus and Two Fraus Bakery, and Harmony Inn, a oneof-a-kind restaurant and saloon serving German-infused entrees and handcrafted drinks. Other popular activities include perusing art and specialty shops like Creative Harmony Arts & Books and Darn Yarn Needles and Thread, adding even more charm to this quaint village. You’ll quickly discover that spending time in Harmony is simply harmonious.
Zelienople K
nown by the locals as “Zelie,” this small town allures visitors with its charm. Zelienople is an unforgettable town steeped in rich history, providing locals and tourists with a plethora of interesting facts and unique attractions. Founded in 1802 by Detmar Basse, the town was named after his daughter, ‘Zelie,’ combined with the Greek word for town, ‘nople.’ Perhaps the most visited area of Zelienople is Main Street, which is lined with family-owned shops and restaurants, museums and a theatre that dates back to 1914. Specialty shops range from one-of-a-kind stores like Stocking Stuffers to fashion boutiques like Eva Bryn Shoetique and Boutique 16063. After you’ve spent time perusing the stores, you’ll need to fuel up on a good meal — choose from delicious options at Spring Street Cafe, Goodfello’s Pizza, Pasta & Grille or ShuBrew: Handcrafted Ales & Food. Historical homes are marked with plaques and a select few are operated as a business. Christian Buhl, a fur trader and hat maker, settled in Zelienople in 1805 and his home is the oldest existing building in Zelienople. It currently serves as one of two museums for the Zelienople Historical Society. Zelie and her husband, Phillip Passavant, built a home on Main Street in 1809 and that is the other museum/office for the Historical Society. Another favorite stop is the Strand Theater, a former movie and vaudeville theater. This restored theater dates back to 1914 and presents top-notch entertainment like Broadway performers, along with classic and current films. You’ll also find additional entertainment throughout the year with annual street festivals like Horse Trading Days and the Country Fall Festival and holiday parades. See for yourself why Zelienople has been labeled ‘a modern place with old-fashioned grace.’
Mars T
raveling to Mars is a lot easier than you think. In fact, you can get there fairly quickly and it’s only a car ride away. Complete with a flying saucer parked within the town square, residents take full advantage of their town’s unique name and visitors enjoy offbeat photo opportunities. Alien sightings occur on a regular basis, and letters with a Mars, PA, postmark are frequently mailed around the world from the local post office. In 2015, Mars created an event that was “out of this world” celebrating the Martian New Year with a festival highlighting education and innovation. This three-day festival attracts thousands of visitors into the downtown area, along with representatives from NASA. The town of Mars hosts this event every two years since it takes Mars almost twice as long as Earth to orbit the sun. The next Mars New Year will be May 31 June 2, 2019. NASA will have displays set up and conduct educational programs focused on STEAM ( science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). So be sure to mark your calendars for this “far out” festival and see for yourself that there really is life on Mars. The town of Mars dates back to 1792 when the first settler arrived in the area. The growth of the town came in spurts however, it flourished in 1894 with the railroad coming through. Mars was conveniently located on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and on the Butler Short Line, the electric trolley route that linked Pittsburgh and Butler. Today, the Historical Society operates a museum, including a restored caboose, and a scaleddown version of the Mars Shortline Railroad available to ride for all ages. So “blast off” to Mars — You’ll learn about the town’s rich history, attend one-of-a-kind events, find unearthly souvenirs and capture unique pictures like selfies with a spaceship.

Several businesses host treasure hunts during the year by hiding promotional items throughout the county, posting clues to social media and encouraging the public to go find them. During the summer, both Fun Fore All and Playthings Etc. share complex riddles on their Facebook page about hidden treasures. Fun Fore All hides themed rocks redeemable for Fun Cards when found while Playthings Etc. hides a variety of gift cards. Other types of prizes can also be found in the Butler Area Marble Hunt, an ongoing area-wide treasure hunt for handmade, glass marbles, pendants and figurines valued at $25 - $150. Glass blowing artists from the Glass Blowing Center and other contributors hide beautiful marbles and post photos of the location on their Facebook group. Treasure seekers are then challenged to find the marble only using the photos as their clues.

I
n 1753, the imperial nations of France and Great Britain and the Native Americans all claimed control of the Ohio Country, the area encompassing present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Acting on orders from Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie, twenty-one-year-old George Washington embarked upon a dangerous expedition north from Williamsburg to deliver a diplomatic message to the French ordering them to evacuate the region. Already the French had erected three forts to reinforce their claim to the area: Fort Presque Isle (Erie, PA), Fort LeBoeuf (Waterford, PA) and Fort Machault (Franklin, PA). During his journey to the French forts in the winter of 1753-1754, young Washington encountered many hazards. There were excessive rains and vast quantities of snow. He was nearly shot by an Indian guide and nearly drowned in the icy waters of the Allegheny River near present-day Pittsburgh. When Washington returned to Williamsburg in January 1754, he reported to the governor that the French intended to remain entrenched in the Ohio Country. This marked the beginning of the military struggle known as the French and Indian War. Blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette mark a commemorative trail throughout western Pennsylvania. (The trail is considered commemorative, as sections of the actual path are open to debate.) Blackwood Arts
ucked away in northeastern Butler County lies an oasis for arts and culture enthusiasts; Blackwood Arts is defined by its rare artwork, beautiful landscaping, and most importantly, world-class organ music. While waiting for a performance to begin, guests are welcome to explore the Blackwood grounds. Each corner of the property is decorated with unique buildings and unexpected surprises. At the beginning of each hour, the sound of bells chime through the air from the clocktower nestled in the trees. The brick, four-story building hosts a 1960s vintage Schulmerich carillon and a sixfoot-wide clock face. The Spring House, distinguished by an arched bridge over a small pond, is a short walk on a path along the outskirts of the woods, its second-floor often occupied by the featured performer. The polished grounds provide a little something for anyone willing to venture along the paved, tree-lined pathways. The main attraction is the theater organ performance in the Music Room. Known for accompanying silent films, the theater organ was initially created to replace the need for a full orchestra while giving life to motion pictures. This amazing instrument is able to replicate sounds from flutes to percussion, and requires masterful musicians to utilize its full potential. The intention of Blackwood Arts is to showcase a traditional movie house experience as a work of art. Founders Ben Robertson and Don Fink purchased the property in 1970 and quickly began work designing and building their own structures among the rolling terrain. Soon, the pair bought and refurbished a Wurlitzer pipe theater organ and started to host concerts featuring internationally-acclaimed organists. Concerts are held June through October, kicking off their season with a free recital performed by students receiving scholarships from Blackwood Arts, soon followed by a Make-A-Wish benefit concert. Oftimes, you can find a performance that accompanies a silent movie. If you love music, Blackwood Arts is 25 a one-of-a-kind experience! 25

looked like 20,000 years ago, but
little did we know, Butler County’s most visited destination was being formed by mother nature herself. After the glaciers retreated, it left behind accumulations of debris and sediment which is how the park got its name: moraine. Today, Moraine State Park is Butler County’s biggest attraction consisting of 16,725 acres of sprawling beauty and sees over two million visitors throughout the year.

Introducing Moraine State Park, Butler County’s top attraction! There’s so much that this State Park has in store... the only question is, what are you going to do first? Fishing:
You’ll be hooked when fishing at Moraine State Park. Enjoy your time on the calm waters of Lake Arthur consisting of 3,225 acres. Rent a boat or bring your own, but only 20hp motors are permitted. Lake Arthur features many boat launches and great fishing spots. Common species include Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Black Crappie and Bluegill.
Boating:
Another favorite activity is boating, and there are many options at Moraine State Park. From canoes and kayaks to sailboats and pontoon boats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The park has nine public boat launches and boat rentals as well. For non-motorized boats, consider launching at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore. The North Shore has a wonderful launch at the McDanels Area. For a truly peaceful experience, paddle in the cove past the cabins.
Biking:
A scenic 7-mile paved bike path located on the north shore winds its way throughout the park and alongside the shoreline. The trail can be accessed at many places in the Lakeview Beach and Watts Bay Marina areas. This scenic trail is not a loop and has several grades and curves. The north shore also features a 6-mile loop trail for mountain bikes. This technical trail is for experienced off-road riders in good physical condition who have equipment for off-road riding. It was named one of the most technical mountain bike trails in the world!

Nautical Nature: The park’s premiere excursion is the Nautical Nature, an enclosed pontoon boat that provides guided cruises giving passengers the opportunity to learn about the area’s history and wildlife within Moraine State Park. Cruises are offered on the weekends from May through October and guests often see bald eagles, osprey and other waterfowl while on the tour. The Nautical Nature also offers environmental programs, brunch and dinner cruises, and private charters for business meetings, seminars and parties.
Swimming:
Head over to the north shore for an exciting game of disc golf at Lakeview Disc Golf Course. This 18-hole disc golf course is a par 66 championship level course that offers spectacular views and scenery while challenging disc golfers with a strenuous but rewarding workout. The course was used as part of the 2015 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships!
SurfSUP Adventures provides stand up paddleboarding lessons, guided ecotours, board rentals, and sales. Stand up paddleboarding, also known as “SUP,” is a beginner and family friendly pursuit and one of the best ways to experience Pennsylvania’s beautiful waterways. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment and can look forward to sharing the experience with SurfSUP Adventures’ expert guides and instructors.
This beautiful park features 38 miles of trails that wander through forests and grassy areas, along lake edges and past wetlands. You can also hike along the Glacier Ridge Trail, which is a part of The North Country National Scenic Trail that stretches all the way from North Dakota to New York. For your safety and to protect the resource, please stay on the trails.
Make a splash on Lake Arthur! Moraine State Park features two beaches, Pleasant Valley Beach and Lakeview Beach. The Pleasant Valley Beach is located on the south shore and is a 1,200-foot turf and sand beach with a sand volleyball court. Lakeview Beach is on the north shore and is a 550foot sand beach.

Jennings Environmental Education Center

ituated on 300 acres, Jennings Environmental Education Center provides a unique combination of protected prairie and forest and is the only protected prairie system in Pennsylvania. One of the park’s main features, the 20-acre prairie ecosystem, is home to distinctive prairie plants and the endangered Massasauga rattlesnake (don’t worry, they are shy). The most noteworthy and spectacular prairie flower is the Liatris Spicata or Blazing Star. Another feature of the park includes a five-mile system of trails that meanders through various terrain, giving hikers the opportunity to experience diverse habitats. Not only can you hike along various trails, but the center provides education about the environment and covers topics like fossils, trees, wildflowers, ecosystems, maple sugaring and more. Visitors can learn more about this beautiful prairie and forest through new exhibits displayed at Jennings. Exhibits can be viewed Mon.- Fri. from 8 AM 4 PM, and on weekends when programs are scheduled. But perhaps the most popular time to visit is during “Celebrate the Bloom,” a festival hosted annually by Jennings featuring nature explorations, engaging demonstrations, local artisans and food and live entertainment.

n English garden consisting of 88 acres, Preston Park features walking trails, fishing ponds, wildlife, and numerous unique plants, and continues to captivate residents and visitors alike. With 40 types of evergreen trees located in the Arboretum, the property boasts the largest concentration of its kind east of the Mississippi.

perated by the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society, Succop Nature Park, formerly Succop Conservancy, beautifully sprawls throughout 50 acres of woodlands, gardens and lush meadows. Located in Penn Township, the property also contains two ponds, dog-friendly walking trails, and open natural spaces that can be used for a variety of outdoor activities. These areas offer a serene environment attracting visitors of all ages who seek to connect with birds and nature.
lso operated by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Todd Nature Reserve, located in Sarver, provides visitors with an abundance of scenic hiking trails and birding opportunities. This 334-acre nature reserve features five miles of trails, three streams and a man-made pond.

Succop Nature Park was established for the purpose of providing an environmental and cultural education center for the community. They offer on-site classes open to the public, year-round naturalist-led free morning walks and more. One of the major events hosted by Succop is Maple Madness that takes place annually in March. During Maple Madness, visitors experience the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of maple sugaring as they embark on a guided hike throughout the park followed by a pancake brunch. Continuing their educational mission, Succop Nature Park will be transforming their 1880 bank barn into their public center. The lower-level will include a large classroom, retail space, restrooms, and the upper-level will be transformed into a large event space. The T. W. Phillips facility will also be topped with a WindStax vertical wind turbine and is predicted to be ready in spring of 2019.

The one-mile Loop Trail runs around the circumference of Todd Nature Reserve with shorter trails cutting across it. The Ravine Trail is the most difficult trail and includes several small stream crossings. The area is known to be a habitat for a multitude of birds. In fact, over 180 species of birds have been found on-site, providing important habitat for the pileated woodpecker, scarlet tanager, and Kentucky warbler. During the warmer months, the Audubon Society conducts naturalist-led free “Birds and More Walks” through the reserve giving visitors the opportunity to spot other animals like deer, bears and unique species of plants. This tranquill reserve is the perfect place for outdoor lovers to explore trails and take in the sights and sounds of nature, providing an exceptional experience for all. Todd Nature Reserve is opened year-round from dawn to dusk (except during deer hunting season) and is one of the oldest reserves in Pennsylvania, having just turned 77 in 2019.
This area has one of the most significant clusters of osprey nests in Pennsylvania. Watch as osprey nest along the shoreline of Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park. A Live Stream will be provided on our website from March through August.
Named after Frank Preston, an English-born conservationist and expert in glass technology, he was instrumental in founding the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Dr. Preston lived on the grounds and utilized the space for his research. Formerly a private residence, Preston Park was a gift to Butler Township in 2011 from the late Jane and Dr. Frank Preston. His
laboratory and home are on-site and are available for guided tours. Guided tours of the park are offered throughout the year, and various volunteer groups and organizations act as stewards of the park by maintaining the grounds, adding trail signs and a butterfly habitat. Visitors can also enjoy picnics, hiking, bird watching and the outdoor theater during warmer weather.

ocated in Middlesex Township, Glade Run Lake is a 50-acre man-made lake surrounded by 100 acres of luscious woodlands and is a treasure for the Butler community. Used for recreation, conservation, and education this beautiful lake is a wonderful attraction for families and tourist alike.
perated by Butler County Parks & Recreation Department, Alameda Park is located in Butler and brings the residents of Butler County a variety of quality, affordable recreational opportunities. This beautiful park features playgrounds, picnic areas, numerous shelter facilities, a community waterpark and is handicap accessible.
Glade Run Lake was once a premiere big bass fishing hole, but was drained after the earthen dam was declared unsafe. Since its reopening in 2017, The Glade Run Lake Conservancy (GRLC), a nonprofit, grass roots community organization, has gone to great lengths aiding in the park’s restoration by restoring the fish and avian population, creating a 1.5 mile walking trail, constructing a handicapped accessible fishing deck and more! GRLC offers fishing and motorless boating to thousands and ongoing preservation and improvement of Glade Run Lake remains the mission of this group.
Alameda Waterpark is a great place to cool down on a hot summer day. Visitors can enjoy the Pirate’s Cove Splash Pad, enclosed tube slides, toddler zero entries, picnic tables, umbrellas and the diving well that features a rock wall, diving boards, and a drop slide. The park’s newest and perhaps the most talked-about addition is the recently designed 20-mile mountain bike and hiking trail system. Currently, there are seven miles of trails that are complete with the remainder still under construction. In cooperation with Trail Pittsburgh, the trails at Alameda Singletrack are being built according to the International Mountain Bike Association’s (IMBA) sustainability guidelines, all within the comprehensive plan for the park. The trails are appropriate for all levels of riders and emphasize flow and fun over technical obstacles and rock gardens. Integrated into this mountain bike adventure are rolling contours, banked corners and berms. Make Alameda Park your next outdoor recreation destination!

Butler-Freeport Community Trail Butler County’s only Rails-to-Trails trail
East Butler
The Butler-Freeport Community Trail is a rail-trail, preserving the route of Butler County’s first railroad (1871), the Western Pennsylvania Railroad, which connected the City of Butler to the Allegheny River port of Freeport. As a rails-to-trails project, the 21-mile trail offers a level, natural crushed limestone surface with a gradual uphill grade as it travels north (barely noticeable to walkers) and the converse downhill grade as it travels south (greatly enjoyed by bicyclists). Dogs are welcome but required to be on a leash and under the control of the person walking them on the trail.
