hen traveling throughout Butler County, you’ll find a variety of experiences you can’t find anywhere else all in one place. While it’s cliché to say there’s something for everyone, we really are lucky to have great diversity here. Although the county’s roots tie it to an old farming community, visitors today will see more than just countryside. In the developed southwestern corner of the county, you’ll find Cranberry Township. Shopping and restaurants line Route 19 tucked between two major highways. A short distance away you’ll discover historic Harmony, the small town of Portersville and rural farmlands. From a destination where everything is at your fingertips to the quaint and quiet landscapes, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy one extreme or another. UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex Opening mid-2015

Drivers passing I-79 in Cranberry Township can see a glimpse of the future for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Located near Route 228 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the Cranberry Springs development, the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is scheduled for opening in 2015.

he facility will be the first of its kind in the country, a joint effort between an NHL team and one of the nation’s medical centers. While serving as the practice home of the Penguins, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex will also have a medical component, specializing in hockey-related treatment, training and injury prevention. “It’s going to be unique,” said Rich Hixon, the Penguins’ executive director of strategic planning.

“This will be the first medical facility in the country to focus on hockey.” Penguins owner Mario Lemieux was on hand in March to fill the first shovel with dirt as construction got underway. The complex bearing his name will be 180,000 square feet and feature two ice sheets, a concession space, a retail space and multiple locker rooms as well as UPMC offices and medical facilities. Approximately 30% of the building’s square footage will be dedicated to UPMC medicine and sports training. The “hockeyrelated” medical and training elements include expert care in orthopedics, concussion management and prevention, sports nutrition, physical therapy and performance training catered to needs of hockey players. The Penguins will use the complex for training camp and an undetermined amount of practices during the season, but it will also host special team-related events such as the annual summer development

camp for prospects, alumni games and youth hockey camps and clinics. There also will be plenty of public skating, figure skating and community events. In addition, the facility will serve as home ice for Pittsburgh Penguins Elite AAA youth hockey program, which is sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods. The Penguins Elite program is a U.S.A. Hockey-recognized Tier-1 program comprised of fourteen different teams (nine boys and five girls) competing in various age categories. According to Hixon, one of the goals will also be to host U.S.A. Hockey-sanctioned tournaments, Tier 1 Elite showcases, along with amateur and high school hockey games. “The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex will be a recreational asset that will attract teams and players from all over the country to Cranberry Township,” Hixon said. As for seating capacity, the larger of the two rinks—the one

that will be home to Penguins practice sessions—will have bleacher seating to accommodate nearly 1,000 fans. The other rink is expected to have available seating just over 400. “We will still do the larger fan events at CONSOL Energy Center because of the much larger seating capacity,” Hixon said. “But we’ll be creating plenty of new events for the facility in Cranberry.” There will also be 14 different locker rooms scattered around the rinks, making it extremely functional for youth hockey tournaments and adult leagues. Hixon believes the facility will mean bigger and better things for the surrounding community, as well. “Hopefully, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex acts as a catalyst for future development along that I-79 corridor,” Hixon said. “Both the developer and Cranberry Township have been tremendous to work with and we all think this can lead to further development.”

“It’s pretty special, and having all the resources we can get to try and stay as healthy as possible and play the best as possible,” said Penguins’ forward Beau Bennett, “I think it’s going to be awesome for us.” 9

Happy 75th Birthday, JEEP®! What makes something stand the test of time while the world around us is evolving with new technology every day? The men behind the development and design of the Bantam Reconnaissance Car (BRC) would have been great people to ask since the American Bantam Car Company’s BRC, born in Butler, Pennsylvania in 1940, is the predecessor to the Jeep® vehicles you see on the road today. As the country entered World War II, Charles “Harry” Payne, a Bantam lobbyist, had been working extensively to interest the Army Quartermaster Technical Committee on Transportation (QMC) in a military style of a Bantam car. After discussions with the QMC did not move along the process, Payne visited the Secretary of War, who felt that a meeting should be arranged at the facility in Butler with the ordnance subcommittee. With demonstrations and input from Bantam representatives, the committee decided on specifications for the vehicle. Bid requests were then sent to 135 manufacturers with requirements for the general

purpose vehicle. Only Bantam and Willys-Overland Motors submitted bids to produce a vehicle, and only Bantam fit the requirements set by the QMC. Bantam won the bid to build the prototype and vowed to complete the vehicle and detailed drawings within 49 days. At Camp Holabird, Maryland, the BRC was debuted for testing to both the military officials, as well as representatives from Ford Motor Company and WillysOverland Motors. Because Bantam had no patent on their product, the government claimed ownership of the drawings, and shared these with Willys-Overland and Ford. After its approval, a contract to complete 70 BRC-60 vehicles in 12 weeks was given to Bantam. One month later, orders for 1,500 vehicles each were given to Bantam, Willys-Overland and Ford. Although Bantam was able to complete both of these orders ahead of deadline, they were not awarded another substantial vehicle contract. However, they continued to produce

military trailers and other materials to keep the company alive.

By the end of the war, the American Bantam Car Company had produced over 2,500 jeeps and more than 73,000 military trailers. While they had no patent on the vehicle, Bantam will always be memorialized through the continued popularity of the Jeep® today. Fast forward 75 years to 2015 as we celebrate what General George Marshall once called “America’s greatest contribution to modern warfare.” The 5th annual Bantam Jeep® Heritage Festival, taking place June 1214, 2015, will commemorate Bantam’s hard work and dedication over seven decades ago. The Festival celebrates the lifestyle that surrounds the Jeep® today with activities including On-Site Trails, Jeep® Playground, How-To Clinics, vendors and Show’n Shine. Blow out the candles with Bantam’s 75th birthday activities taking place all weekend long, including the Guinness World Records Largest Parade of Jeeps, the History Speaker Series, the History Exhibit and more!

Soaring Through Butler Skies

Not only was Butler, Pennsylvania the birthplace of the Jeep and five other automobiles, but it also has a rich history related to aviation! The flat fields of farmlands in Butler County made it an ideal area for early pilots to land. One of those landing strips of farmland these aviators used, Nixon and Dodds Farm, is now the location of the Butler County Airport. Today’s air traffic, however, has a much safer 4,801-foot paved runway to greet them.

1908

In 1908 Augustus Roy Knabenshue, a member of the Wright Brothers’ Exhibition Team, soared over Butler in a one-man dirigible. His trip, noted as the first flight in Butler County, covered from the old fairgrounds (now Butler High School) to the Courthouse and back.

As many other local aviators gained interest in flight, their needs were met on August 27-28, 1929 when the Pittsburgh Aviation Industries Corporation established the 230-acre site in Penn Township as the Pittsburgh-Butler Airport. The Penn School of Aviation, modeled after the United States Army training schools, was originally housed here and was regarded as one of the most state-of-the-art air transport and mechanical schools in the nation. Pittsburgh-Butler Airport served as the primary airport for the Pittsburgh region until Pittsburgh International was built in the early 1950s.

1929 As you can imagine, such a distinguished reputation garnered the interest of many notable aviation greats. Amelia Earhart, who was present for the airport’s 1929 dedication, later returned in 1932. She trained in Butler’s skies for three months to acquire her instrument flight certificate prior to her flight across the Atlantic. Amelia even had long-range fuel tanks installed on her Lockheed Vega (Little Red Bus) while in the area.

You may have heard of Taylorcraft Aircraft, but did you know that C.G. Taylor had facilities in Butler in 1935? Here he manufactured his original two-place side-by-side aircraft, with its original design drawn out on the floor of the airport’s historical hangar, C-1.

1938

In May of 1938, for the first time in the airport’s history, airmail was flown out of the Pittsburgh-Butler Airport to the municipal airport in Pittsburgh. As WWII roared on, Butler’s airport served as a training facility for American, British and Canadian pilots. Many of these cadets bunked at the dormitories of Slippery Rock and Grove City Colleges while earning their flight hours.

1969

John Graham purchased the airport and ran Graham Aviation there from 1969 until 1980 when the authority obtained the entire airport as it exists today. During that time, Graham’s friendliness to private and sportsmen aviators turned the airport into a hub, since larger airports were more concentrated on commercial and international flights. Butler County Airport Authority purchased the tract of land from Mr. Graham through approximately seven deeds.

1950

Following the war, the Butler County Airport authority was formed and in 1950, the runway was paved. These changes enabled the authority to apply for federal funds.

Despite improvements such as the addition of an 800-foot runway extension in 2004, the airport continues to be operated by only three people. The airport is also still uncontrolled, meaning pilots are responsible for announcing their intentions on a common advisory frequency (UNICOM) or contacting the tower at Pittsburgh International Airport during bad weather.

Today, aviators can take

advantage of the services of the Butler County Airport’s fixed base operator, AirQuest Aviation, or dine at Hangar 4.7.3 overlooking the runway of the airport.

ity folk or country bumpkin, we can probably all agree that western Pennsylvania’s rolling hills are gorgeous… but just as beautiful is what lies beyond these scenic landscapes. Day in and day out, farmers wake early and labor all day. They must serve as food producers, veterinarians, businessmen and endless other occupations. These welleducated men and women work long days, meticulously plan out their growing seasons, and fend off pests and inclement weather. What does all of this have to do with tourism? A lot, surprisingly! If you’ve ever eaten food, gone to a fair or carved a pumpkin, then agriculture

is relevant to you, both as a potential visitor and part of the human race. (Side note: if you haven’t eaten food, what planet are you from?!) We’ll get back to food later. Let’s start with the cute part. Alpacas are our star critter here in Butler County. There are four different alpaca farms which allow you to visit with, pet and fall in love with these fuzzy creatures. All of the farms have shops with soft products made from alpaca fleece, and one even has a bed and breakfast so you can arise near your newfound friends. Another “cute” side of agritourism is rustic weddings. Beautiful countryside and post-and-beam barns will make

the perfect backdrop for your special day. You may even get an animal escort down the aisle. Stella the goose at Armstrong Farms is notorious for joining in the celebration! If you don’t get invited to a farm wedding, you’re still welcome to explore local farms. Many are open to the public year-round or at least in the fall. There are both fun and educational opportunities for the whole family. (See Awesome Autumn story on page 31.) In addition, other agricultural events showcase farming–from the Big Butler Fair, in its 160th year, to the Butler Farm Show, another long-standing well-loved event. New for 2015 is the Butler County Farm Tour. This event

has been around for 10+ years, but you’ve never seen it like this! Approximately 20 farms will be open to visitors with special activities planned in every corner of the county. The event will now be two days and the best part is, it will still be free! Another free tour is the Barns of Butler County, a drive-it-yourself tour. Grab a free brochure and be on your way along one, two or three routes to see the county’s most interesting barns. Each barn has its own unique story to tell, and the drives are scenic and relaxing. Back to food… just about any product you need can be found here, made locally. Milk, flour, meat, produce, spices, syrup,

sauces, wine, coffee… the list goes on. In Butler County, you can get back to basics and avoid the highly-processed foods of our time. If you don’t like cooking, there are farm-to-fork restaurants serving local foods. There is also a Butler Basket which contains fresh locallyproduced products–an excellent gift for just about anyone. Last but not least is Butler County’s good-looking food source, The Farm Kings. The 10-person family works their butts off and even has their own TV series to show for it. Name the Cow Contest

Meet Moochelle! By Teri Getsay

t Butler County Tourism, we attend fairs, festivals and parades throughout the county with our 1967 Kaiser Jeep to promote all the exciting things to see and do here. The cow in our Jeep didn’t have a name, so we held a Name the Cow Contest for children ages two to 12. The contest was a huge success, with 557 eligible entries. The winning name, Moochelle, was entered by seven-year-old Michele Smith from Fenelton, Pennsylvania. She made her entry while attending the Alameda Fall Festival in Butler on September 27. Michele is a 1st grader at Clearfield Elementary whose favorite subject is science. The first person she told about winning the contest was her teacher. Some of her favorite things include drawing, coloring and learning how to knit with one of her grandmas. Her favorite animals are turkey and deer. When asked what the best part was about winning—the prize, riding in a parade, getting her picture taken, or having her story and picture in our guide—she gave me a huge smile and said, “I don’t know, I love everything,” and gave her prize cow (whom she has also named Moochelle) a huge hug. She told her grandma to feel how soft Moochelle was and flashed her infectious smile. During her prize ride in the parade, she smiled and waved to the crowd like a pro. Discover Delightful, Diverse Saxonburg T he town of Saxonburg is slightly off the beaten path, making it a true hidden treasure. Whether you’re navigating Route 228, winding down Dinnerbell Road or cruising along Route 356, definitely follow the signs for Saxonburg! Saxonburg was founded in 1832 by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling and his brother Karl. Their purchase of 1,600 acres of land on a gentle ridge was thought to be suitable for farming and to offer a new life for Germans in America. Today, Main Street maintains its original character, featuring 32 buildings over 100 years old, and is registered as a National/ Pennsylvania Historic District. Evidence of Roebling’s many contributions to society are evidenced today, including his invention of wire rope, design of the Brooklyn Bridge and layout of the town.

Fascinating. 1. Saxonburg Museum/Roebling Park - Saxonburg Museum includes a shocking array of exhibits, from antiques to KDKA Radio and history specific to the town. Saxonburg was founded by Karl Roebling and brother, John, in 1832. John Roebling later designed the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and invented the wire rope used to build it. A sizable replica of the bridge stands in the park. Don’t forget your camera! 2. Saxonburg Church - designed by John Roebling to be the highest point in the town. 13. Where were you in 1969 and 1970? Vietnam? Out having hippie fun? Just a glimmer in your parents’ eyes? For those who lived in Butler County at that time, most can recall the creation of Lake Arthur. One of our biggest treasures, Moraine State Park, is often enjoyed but not given much thought. Truth is, the park was dedicated in 1970, but its story goes back more than 20,000 years ago when glaciers were prevalent.

hen a glacier retreats, the accumulated debris it leaves behind is called a moraine. That is where the park’s story begins. Evidence of its glacial past is still evident today at the Jacksville Esker. Esker is another glacial term, meaning a serpentine ridge of gravelly and sandy drift, believed to have been formed by streams under or in glacial ice. Preserving this history today, the park offers a self-guided “Trail of Geology” tour. Moving forward tens-of-thousands of years, humans created history on the land… and not the pretty history that you might expect if you’ve seen the park today. The land was deep-mined, strip-mined, drilled and polluted. Thankfully, the land was given a shot at redemption by Dr. Frank W. Preston and others who studied the land for decades and helped form the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The conservancy purchased the land, plugged up 422 gas and oil wells, sealed the deep mines, filled the strip mines, fertilized the soil, and planted thousands of trees, shrubs and grasses. Muddy Creek was also dammed to create the lake. Today, Moraine State Park is 16,725 acres with 1,750 square feet of beach, 71 miles of trails and 42 miles of shoreline. More than two million visitors enjoy the park each year, making it one of the top parks in Pennsylvania. We love the park and welcome you to love it, too.

Bringing Back a Beautiful Lake

great outdoor spot for fishing and family fun will be back on the map in 2017. Glade Run Lake was established in 1954 as an area for public fishing. The lake’s 52-acre site was completed and stocked with trout in 1955. On its opening day, an estimated 8,000 fishermen came out to enjoy the new fishing site! In 2011, all this came to a halt as the lake, located in Middlesex Township of Butler County, ran into issues with seepage at the bottom of its dam. Eventually, it was determined the lake needed to be drained completely. It wasn’t long before the Glade Run Lake Conservancy was formed and began spreading the word about the lake’s need for funding to be restored to its former glory. Over the course of the next few

years, the Conservancy held fundraisers, petition drives and events to garner some of the funds and support necessary to repair the lake. The Conservancy was met with exciting news in April 2014 when it was announced that the project would receive funding from the state in 2016, allowing it to reopen for boating and fishing in 2017. Eager to bring back the lake that was treasured for over 50 years, some projects the Conservancy hopes to accomplish in addition to the restoration of the lake’s site include improving accessibility for persons with disabilities around the area, adding a two-mile walking trail and bridge for hikers, and park beautification. Keep your eyes open for Glade Run Lake’s valiant return as a wonderful outdoor destination!

Moraine State Park has fall foliage cruises on Moraine Preservation Fund’s pontoon boat, the Nautical Nature. It’s one of the best ways to view fall foliage in Butler County. For a list, check out the Awesome Autumn page on our website. You’ll find everything from coffee beverages and beer to ice cream and baked goods. It’s not all sweets either; you’ll also find savory surprises and salted caramel mocha.

Start (or continue) a family tradition with pumpkinpicking, hayrides, corn mazes or jack-o-lantern carving. All across the county are farms offering family-friendly autumn entertainment. Even the spooky sites offer “no scare” days geared towards children. Kids can play in the hay, go swimming in corn or learn about agriculture firsthand. The whole family can appreciate the decorated zombies that adorn Evans City during the month-long Hallo-Weekends. Though “Night of the Living Dead” was the original “zombie” movie, the event is geared toward all ages.

September and October are fall festivals. Street festivals can be found in Slippery Rock, Butler, Zelienople, Harmony, Mars and Saxonburg. Savor the last round of lemonade and funnel cakes, learn how apple cider is made, and shop for crafts and homemade goods. Nothing beats the crisp, cool air, the aroma of wet leaves and soaking up the sunshine before winter rolls in. The festivals are also a great time to explore Butler County’s small, charming towns. The shops, restaurants and attractions are extra welcoming to eventgoers, often offering specials and promotions.

FRIGHTS Ghoulish sites and spooky frights can be

found around every corner. From reportedly haunted buildings to creepy cemeteries, Butler County offers tricks, not just treats. One of the top frights is Cheeseman’s Fright Farm. Geared towards teens and adults, the farm features a chilling hayride and an eerie monster-infested corn maze. Another great way to experience the scary side of autumn is our “Wine & Spirits” itinerary. It features wine, and spirits of both sorts—both alcohol and sites that are rumoured to be haunted. Some of Butler County’s earliest recorded history began when first president George Washington passed through the area in 1753. He narrowly escaped death, being shot at by a Native American less than fifteen paces from him. From there, many prominent figures founded our quaint towns. Created in 1800, Butler County was named for General Richard Butler, a lawyer and wellregarded colonial officer in the American Revolution. In 1802, the town of Zelienople was founded by Baron Dettmar Basse and named for his daughter Zelie. The neighboring town of Harmony was founded in 1804 as the first home of the Harmony Society by George Rapp and his German followers. In 1814, when the Harmonists fled Butler County, Abraham Ziegler purchased their property, organizing the Harmony Mennonites in 1816. The stone church that still stands today was built in 1825. Slippery Rock’s Old Stone House was built in 1822 at the crossroads of the old Venango Trail and Butler to Mercer Pike as a haven for lumbermen, drovers and travelers. The Marquis de Lafayette may have stopped there in 1825. Saxonburg, in the southeastern part of the county, was founded in 1832 by John Roebling. Roebling also invented steel wire rope and designed the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was then built by his son, Washington Roebling, born in Saxonburg in 1837.
