We look forward to working together to create positive change in the community. A major project is the Kaufman House, scheduled to reopen in the first quarter of 2017, which will stimulate the economy, create jobs, and prepare future generations of hospitality employees with its restoration as a restaurant, boutique hotel and training facility. We continue to work hard to bring new events to the area, such as PyroFest and Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland, and are pleased to welcome sports teams of all types, including the Pittsburgh Penguins themselves! Hop in the car with your family, tune in your radio and watch the hundreds of thousands of dancing lights come alive perfectly synchronized to the music in your vehicle. It’s like a front row seat at the most dynamic Christmas concert ever! The show is full of huge, themed displays and at the end of the over two-mile long route, the fun continues at Santa’s Village. The kids can look forward to having a photo taken with Santa, enjoying seasonal refreshments and more. Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland originated in Bristol, Tennessee and has garnered national media attention and awards for the elaborate choreography of the show. They hosted their first light show in 2007 and have improved each year by integrating new technology, music, custom-built animated elements and 100% environmentally-friendly LED lights. Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland debuted in Butler County in 2015, and we are lucky to be one of only a handful of locations across the country that hosts this fabulous attraction. We invite you to make an annual family tradition of visiting the Christmas Wonderland to celebrate the holidays! The light show will be open from late November 2016 through the beginning of January 2017.

2015 was a big year for Butler County. Here’s what you may have missed. Share your 2016 experiences with us by using the hashtag #LoveButlerCounty and raise a toast for another great year! May – PyroFest, America’s Largest Fireworks Festival, moved its location to Cooper’s Lake Campground. PyroFest will be returning to the county over Memorial Day weekend this year. June – The inaugural Mars New Year event took place in downtown Mars with involvement from WTAE-TV and NASA. The event coincided with the New Year on the planet Mars. The next New Year event is set to take place in 2017 since Mars’ year is equivalent to nearly two years on Earth. June – The Butler Freeport Trail was completed. Check out the trail map in the back of this book for more information on this accomplishment!

May – Zelienople Borough celebrated its 175th anniversary with family-friendly activities throughout town, fireworks and a parade.

June – The Guinness World Record for the Largest Jeep Parade was broken in downtown Butler at the 5th annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. The parade was part of the 75th birthday celebration of the first Jeep being produced in Butler.

July – A 1929 Ford Tri-motor plane visited the Butler County Airport and delighted passengers.

August - The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) held the 2015 Pro Disc Golf World Championships at Moraine State Park during the Regatta at Lake Arthur. Some rounds of the championships also took place at Slippery Rock University’s new disc golf course.

August – Cranberry Township was named by Expedia as #8 in their list of the 101 Most Comfortable Cities. The list was determined by user reviews of hotels and amenities in 2014.

August/September – Mudderella and Tough Mudder, popular mud runs, were held at Cooper’s Lake Campground. Tough Mudder will be returning in 2016.

August – The long-awaited UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex opened in Cranberry Township. The complex is the official practice location for the Pittsburgh Penguins®, and it will also serve as an outpatient facility for UPMC Sports Medicine. This is the first facility of its kind!

ShuBrew got its name from a play on the owners’ last name, Shumaker. The beers are also named after footwear or at least something that is related to feet or shoes, such as Jungleboot and Wellies. All of the beers are brewed on site in a half barrel (15.5 gallon), which as far as they know, makes them Pennsylvania’s smallest brewery. If you’re looking to find humor and a good time with a cold glass of beer, this is the place for you! on board! New to Butler in 2015, Reclamation Brewing Company, was the brainchild of a pastor, a cost analyst and a graduate student and is now serving up delicious beers and food on Main Street. Another new brewpub to Butler’s Main Street is Butler Brew Works. The crew may just be opening their storefront but that doesn’t mean the locals haven’t already decided these craft brews are fantastic! Butler Brew Works has participated in the annual Butler Brewfest and Cooper’s Lake Brewer’s Fest, most notably taking home the first place prize for specialty beer. They were also awarded second place for taster’s choice and third place for overall beer. Also opened in 2015, DR Distillery, handcrafts White Gold Corn Whiskey and Sweet Trade Rum in rural Slippery Rock. They manage the process from beginning to end with special attention to using local mills to grind the grain, local spring water, and bottles from a local manufacturer, resulting in ultra-smooth spirits.

During a trip down memory lane with some nostalgic candies at Baldinger’s in Zelienople, head right through the archway into Mazza Wine Shop to enjoy the adult pleasure of wine tasting in the very same building. Enjoy samples of a variety of flavors ranging from Italian varietals, fruit wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines to their award-winning ice wines.

Destination

Butler. Butler has a rich history shaped by immigrants and industries. The city is the county seat and was named for General Richard Butler, a Revolutionary War military leader. A mix of history, arts and community events make the city of Butler charming.

ince its founding in 1800, there have been two major immigration waves. Early settlers were German, Scots-Irish and English seeking peace, religious freedom and land. In 1887, Butler emerged in the global flat glass industry bringing in workers from Belgium, France, Germany and England. The next industry to boom in Butler was the manufacturing of the first ever, all-steel railcars by the Standard Steel Car Company, founded by John Hansen and “Diamond” Jim Brady. Many eastern Europeans came to work in Butler during this second wave to build a brighter future for their families. Butler’s community grew up around Standard Steel Car (SSC), which became one of the largest builders of steel cars in the U.S. The imprint it had was seen in the many domed churches of

Lyndora, and the company housing that lined Hansen Avenue. In 1930, SSC merged with Pullman Co. to create the great Pullman-Standard that employed thousands of Butler residents until its closing in 1982. The community remains enriched by the culture and heritage of the immigrants once employed by these industries.

Butler also has an interesting automotive history and is known ‘round the world as the birthplace of the Jeep. Six automobiles got their start in Butler: the Huselton, Standard, Russell Sherman, American Austin, American Bantam and the Bantam BRC, or Jeep. In 1940, the US Army asked 135 tractor and auto manufacturers to design a four-wheel drive, 40 horsepower, 1,200 pound reconnaissance car that could haul soldiers as well as heavy artillery. The challenge? The designer was expected to have a working prototype available for a test run within 49 days. Only two companies responded to the request, The American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland Motors of Toledo, Ohio. Bantam won the contract and that’s where the Jeep began.

Kelly Automotive Park (formerly Pullman Park), built in 1934, was used for minor league baseball for 20 years until the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team left in 1951. The ballpark saw many famous faces during its professional baseball days, including Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford and Joe DiMaggio, who played for a farm team of the New York Yankees. Transforming Our County Seat One Wall at a Time When you hear the word “Walldogs,” what comes to mind? Most likely, it is not a group of sign painters and mural artists. But that’s what they are! Walldogs come from all around the world and bring their amazing skills to cities to paint walls with images of historical significance to that town. Each wall is a representation of people, places and industries. Walldogs take time away from their businesses to spend four or five days each year transforming a community with murals and oldfashioned wall advertisements! Jill Welsh, a local Walldog, and the Butler County Historical Society worked together to bring this outstanding group of artists to come to Butler this summer. They will be transforming walls throughout town from July 27th to 31st featuring the following subjects, most pertaining to Butler’s history.

Saxonburg. Despite its small size, Saxonburg is big on charm and is currently experiencing a rebirth. The community hosts several events and festivals, including new “Main Street Mingles.” If your visit to Butler County doesn’t coincide with one of the town’s special events, you’re always welcome to relax on a bench or stroll along the sidewalk while admiring the preservation of days gone by.

axonburg, named for the German state of Saxony, began as a vision for a wholesome town offering a new life for German settlers. With distinctive architecture modeled after a German hamlet, it still retains much of its original character. In fact, Main Street was named to the National Register of Historic Places and 32 of the town’s buildings are more than 100 years old! It was also designed so that the highest point of the town was the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church, which still stands as such today. What do Saxonburg and the “Big Apple” have in common? John Roebling, one of the town’s founders, left his mark in both places. He was the inventor of the wire cable used on the Brooklyn Bridge as well as the designer of it, so while you meander through Roebling Park, take notice of the sizeable reminder of his impact on the town: a replica Brooklyn Bridge. Today, Main Street is lined with shops and businesses that share the same passion for preserving the town’s history.You don’t have to go far to sip a cup of coffee, enjoy a delicious meal, purchase fresh baked goods, or shop for unique items in historic buildings. Taking the old, transforming it into something new and still preserving the old world charm is a skill Saxonburg has perfected. If you take a walk to admire the gorgeous homes, you’ll surely encounter at least one other person to offer a warm “hello.” A stroll down Main Street offers opportunity for shopping, dining and quirky adventures.

ith a name like Zelienople, you might wonder what the first residents were thinking! The town was named for the founder’s daughter, Zelie, and “nople” is the Greek word for town. Learn more about this history at the historical society’s Buhl and Passavant House museums. You can even see framed artwork made of real human hair! Another piece of fun is the lion water fountain in the town’s “four corners” (intersection of Main Street and Grandview Avenue). If you want a drink, you have to stick your head in his mouth! On Friday nights, The Strand Theater shows movies for only $5; some classics, some current flicks. This restored theater dates back to 1914 and was, at one point, used for vaudeville! In addition to movies, you can catch top-notch live entertainment, including Broadway performers and more. You can find additional entertainment year-round with frequent holiday parades, and special programming by the Community Park Association. Evans City.

When the land that became Evans City was settled in the 1800s, the residents would probably have never guessed that it would later gain notoriety from zombies—nor did they even know what zombies were!

ith hit shows like “The Walking Dead,” we sure do today. What zombie fans today may not know is that the craze started in Evans City, filming location for the 1968 cult classic “Night of the Living Dead.” Director George Romero returned to the town again in 1973 to film “The Crazies,” a film in which the town was blown up! Today Evans City proudly honors its past with wooden zombie silhouettes, and its nickname, “City of Black Gold,” referring to a 1915 oil boom. During October 2015 festivities, a large historical marker and plaques (shown to the right) were placed in town linking Evans City to its film history. This tiny town is a main throughway between Butler and the western part of the county as its Main Street is Route 68. Despite its size, the town has several festivals, specialty shops, restaurants, a community park and a museum. A favorite piece of Jeff’s was a light made from a vintage minnow cage. Sometimes it can be hard for him to part with things he has created, which just goes to show the love that is put into upcycling. Another comeback queen is Sue of Whimsy Antiques who upgrades old furniture, making it appeal to a younger generation. She recalled one particularly interesting piece—a 1940s secretary desk which she painted a striking robin’s egg blue and embellished with old nautical maps. Mars. Yes, there really is life on Mars, and residents take full advantage of the fun opportunities their town’s name creates.

Letters with a Mars, PA postmark are frequently mailed around the world from the local post office. In June 2015, Mars went all out, creating a new “annual” event to celebrate the planet Mars’ New Year. The second event won’t take place until May 2017 since it takes Mars almost twice as long as Earth to orbit the sun. The event is definitely worth noting though, with involvement from NASA and a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). The town of Mars dates back to 1792 when the first settler arrived in the area. Mars flourished in its early years because it was located on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and on the Butler Short Line, the electric trolley route that linked Pittsburgh and Butler. Today, the historical society operates a museum, including a restored caboose, and a scaled-down version of the Mars Shortline Railroad which you can ride for a donation.

Diverse Beginnings

The entrepreneurial spirit of our campground owners comes from many diverse backgrounds. Robert Wehr of Bear Run Campground was an international engineer before deciding to bring families close to nature in his campground near Lake Arthur’s shoreline, bordering Moraine State Park, and near the North Country Trail and Jennings Environmental Education Center. Developing a campground from the ground up gave Robert an opportunity to combine his abilities to design, build, maintain and improve a project on an ongoing basis. The campground that Robert started from scratch in 1975 has since become a top-rated destination and is still run by the Wehr family. The route that Ed Tanski of Buttercup Woodlands Campground took to open his facility is quite different. Tanski is a Navy veteran from Vietnam. After returning home and operating many other businesses, he and his wife were approached by the owner of Buttercup Woodlands. As avid seasonal campers, this opportunity sounded very appealing and in 1997, the Tanskis purchased the campground. In the last 18 years, the campground has acquired four or five stars in all of the categories scored by Woodall’s campground grading system. Today’s campers can enjoy theme weekends, a pool, and a recreation hall that frequently offers bands or DJ entertainment.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest Kampground is ranked in the top 1% nationwide through dedication from the Quigley family. As a child, Denny Quigley was immersed in the hospitality business since his father owned a hotel. After 20 years in the auto parts industry, he decided it was time for a change. The campground has since been recognized nationally as Park of the Year (2011, 2014 and 2015) as well as Entrepreneur and Facility of the Year within the Yogi Bear campground system. If you’re really looking for a weekend away from it all, Peaceful Valley Campground in West Sunbury is waiting! This KOA (Kampgrounds of America) campground offers horseback riding and is just a short drive away from state game lands and a fishing lake!

Near Moraine State Park Hillside huts and primitive campsites will make you one with nature at Breakneck Campground in Portersville. Open year-round (with the exception of September and October when it transforms into Cheeseman’s Fright Farm), it’s the perfect spot for campers, hikers, kayakers and outdoor lovers. Under new ownership, Lake Arthur Family Campground borders Moraine State Park. The 58 acres of campground offer both wooded and open sites with nearby access to Moraine’s Route 528 boat launch. You can also camp in Moraine State Park’s 11 modern cabins— but reserve them ASAP because they are very popular!

Think Slippery Rock is an odd name for a town? How about “Wechachochapohka,” which is the Seneca word for the town? The names may be strange, but this quaint college town is big on charm. Slippery Rock is vibrant with college students—many seeking to become teachers, physical therapists and recreation professionals.

ith its convenient location along the Slippery Rock Creek and proximity to Moraine State Park, Jennings Environmental Education Center and the North Country Trail, Slippery Rock is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, kayaking and geocaching are some popular activities, along with disc golf. There is a new disc golf course right on the university’s campus which was just used as part of a world championship! During the school year, SRU offers a top-notch performing arts series, as well as student performances, art galleries and sporting events. Taking a stroll down Main Street can also be quite delightful, with murals, sculptures, shaded seating, and one-of-a-kind small businesses. A volunteer organization called Slippery Rock in Bloom enhances the community, not only through beautification, but heritage preservation as well. In recent years, the town has really blossomed (pun intended)!

41.063983, -80.056710 Tiny Towns. Rural Roads. Hidden Treasures. As visitors to Butler County, you quickly become familiar with our towns due to their proximity to major highways and interstates, but don’t miss out on the scenic back roads and farms that are nestled among them!

Prospect has a lot to offer in terms of beautiful farmfilled landscapes and hills. Route 528 passes through Prospect and if you follow it north, you’ll find yourself in Slippery Rock. The winding road takes you through our state parks whose wholesome scenery can be admired no matter what season! Just north of Moraine State Park, you can find the Jacksville or Miller Esker, which is a serpentine deposit left by glaciers 23,000 years ago. On the western side of the parks are West Liberty and West Park Roads. While these roads are not far apart, you’ll be met with polar opposite surroundings. West Liberty will lead you through acres of vast fields while West Park gives you tree-lined views.

In nearby Portersville, you can experience agritourism at Cheeseman Farm. Farms throughout the county have created visitor-friendly festivals and events that give you a behind-the-scenes look at where your food comes from—much of it from the county’s rolling farmland! Harvest Valley Farms, Metrick’s Harvest View Farm and Freedom Farms are other great agritourism stops! In northern Butler County, Halston Road takes you to West Sunbury and features outstanding views of changing leaves in autumn. Here you can stop by Zanella Milling, the last producer of buckwheat flour in the county. Branchton Road will eventually lead you

to the rural area of State Game Lands #95 and one of our favorite hidden treasures, The Glass Blowing Center. To the northwest is Harrisville, which is less than one square mile! If you enter the county from the east on Route 68, you’ll get the trifecta of farmlands, delightful hills and open spaces as you approach Chicora. There, Old Point Alpaca Park offers another change of scenery with its pasture, wooded pond and herd of alpacas, of course! Moraine State Park. W

hat makes Moraine State Park so great? Beautiful scenery in every season, tons of outdoor activities, rich history… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Or in Moraine’s case, should we say glacier?! Moraine State Park gets its namesake from an event that happened tens of thousands of years ago. A moraine refers to the accumulated debris a retreating glacier has left behind. The next chapter in Moraine’s history involved deep-mining, stripmining, drilling and pollution. Luckily, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy saw a different future for the land. Gas and oil wells were plugged, mines were sealed, thousands of trees were planted, and Muddy Creek was dammed to create the lake. Thank goodness for this renaissance. Today Moraine is one of Pennsylvania’s top parks, and you can enjoy a plethora of activities (land, air and sea!) each season throughout the park’s 16,725 acres.

Summertime is when Moraine State Park really shines with endless lake activities. The 3,225-acre Lake Arthur features ten boat launches sprinkled throughout the park, and the Crescent Bay Marine and Boat Rental can provide kayaks, paddleboats, canoes, sailboats, pontoon boats and small motorboats. Set sail for a gorgeous day on the lake swimming, windsurfing, fishing or stand up paddleboarding! Want to learn to Stand Up Paddleboard? SurfSUP Adventures can help! Take lessons and eco-tours at the park and you’ll be gliding over the beautiful waterways in no time! Take in the beautiful scenery and watch the seasons change on the Nautical Nature, Moraine Preservation Fund’s 45-passenger enclosed pontoon boat. It operates on a regular schedule spring through fall, providing public tours and chartered cruises.

Land: Name your favorite outdoor activity. Chances are, Moraine State Park has you covered. The park’s six-mile mountain biking trail was named one of the most technical mountain bike trails in the world! You can also ride on a paved seven-mile bicycle trail, hike Moraine’s 28.6 miles of trails, and go geocaching. 13,600 acres of the park are open to hunting, trapping and dog training. An Insider’s Look at Moraine State Park By: Teri Whelan

My personal experience with Moraine State Park started the summer of 1987 as a dockworker at Davis Hollow Marina. I’ve spent nearly 30 years enjoying the park and have found some amazing ways to maximize quality time at the park.

For those who enjoy Biking, try starting at the end of the bike trail at the Moraine Outdoor Center. The trail is more level and shaded than starting at the trailhead. Bring along snacks for a break at one of the tree-covered picnic tables at Watt’s Bay Marina. When the winds are right, sit and watch the sailors on their colorful sailboats. Many times, the sailing club will be holding races, and you’ll really be in for a visual treat.

Air: One of the newer and more unique activities that has become popular is disc golf. While the pros love it, you don’t have to be a professional to hit the course! This challenging 18-hole course has spectacular views of the park and is located in the Lakeview Day Use area. Another air activity that is a highlight at Moraine is birdwatching. Bald Eagles, Herons and Osprey are some of the species you can look for at the park.

If Hiking and Picnicking are on your agenda, the Sunken Garden Trail is an easy trail not far from the entrance of the South Shore. It offers many spots for beautiful views of the lake. For a private picnic, drive past the beach to the Crestline Picnic Area entrance on your left. There are lots of tables at the John M. Eisler Picnic Grove. You won’t notice the view from the parking lot, but trust me, it is one of the best spots in the park! There are many options for Boating at Moraine. For non-motorized boat owners, consider launching at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore. The cove is non-motorized, and you can stay there or venture out into Big Run and enjoy quiet Beaver Cove. The North Shore has a wonderful launch at the McDanels Area. For a truly peaceful experience, paddle in the cove past the cabins. A less populated area of the lake that also offers quick access to the Muddy Creek area can be found at the 528 Launch. Interested in Fishing but don’t own the equipment? Stop by the park office with just a photo ID and for the day, free of charge, you can borrow equipment—fishing poles in various sizes, tackle boxes with fake bait, hooks, and bobbers. Hopefully my tips help you make the most of your time at Moraine. It truly is the gem of Butler County!

One such feature is the compass rose that points out the distance to faraway places like London and the North Pole.

Butler-Freeport Community Trail Butler County’s only Rails-to-Trails trail T

hrough the years, the thunder of trains and the hum of trolley cars have been replaced by the quiet crunching of crushed 68 limestone and the joyful laughter of families bike riding. The rails-totrails project preserves the route of Butler County’s first railroad: the Western Pennsylvania Railroad was one of the first 400 railsto-trails in the country. The first mile of the trail was 422 Port ma n Rd completed in 1992 and Herman R more than 20 years P P later in 2015, the final Vogleyville Brinker Rd. piece of the trail, a 12-foot P 356 P wide bridge linking the two Herm Herman ends together, was completed and named Fellowship n Road er S ch Hin chb e r g n Crossing. The trail offers scenic biking and walking from u C P r Headland Butler to Freeport, and some of the remnants from its time P S St as a railroad can still be seen throughout.
