WELCOME TO CORPUS CHRISTI

A lot awaits you here in the Gulf Coast Capital, from our continuous miles of sun-packed beaches to our popular attractions, and, of course, the must-taste bites and brews at our area restaurants. You will see a lot of recommendations in this guide to make your visit a great one, but more than anything, we want you to make it your own experience. That is why our number one suggestion is for you to Coast Your Own Way!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IN THE GCC?

The weekend that I dream of each week is to wake up and eat breakfast at Hester’s or Chops & Eggs before packing up my truck and heading to Padre Island National Seashore for the afternoon. After driving home and cleaning up for the evening, we are definitely having a hand-crafted cocktail at The Post followed by dinner overlooking Corpus Christi Bay at Elizabeth’s at the Art Museum of South Texas.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU ALWAYS DO WITH VISITING FRIENDS & FAMILY?

In all my years of travel I still have yet to find an attraction as well run as our Texas State Aquarium. What makes it even better is that the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay is right beside it so you can spend half your day enjoying the best of North Beach. You have to show off when you have family and friends in town. To me that means a sunset dinner at Doc’s Seafood and Steaks followed by ice cream at Snoopy’s. The Laguna Madre view just makes everything in life better.

FAVORITE WATERING HOLE?

Downtown has it going on after work. You can’t go wrong with a Ranchwater or margarita from Goldfish or BUS.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO DATE NIGHT ITINERARY?

The best bourbon list in the region is at the Nueces Whiskey Library. After a drink, it’s either right next door to Bellino’s for some authentic Sicilian Italian or Yardarm for a fresh seafood dinner overlooking Corpus Christi Bay.

BEST HIDDEN GEM YOU’VE FOUND SINCE YOU MOVED HERE?

Price’s Chef Diner is a definite experience for breakfast. I’m also a sucker for mangonadas from La Paletera. You haven’t lived until you combine mango sherbet, chamoy and Tajin.

IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND ONE THING FOR EVERY VISITOR, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I literally can’t. Our slogan is to Coast Your Own Way because you can in the Gulf Coast Capital. You can be anyone you want to be in Corpus Christi. It has something for everyone.

THINGS TO KNOW CORPUS CHRISTI

There are two types of people in this world: Texans and everyone else. From the city to the beach, the coast is more than our part of the state. Coasting is our state of mind. We take our time and take what's ours. We know who we are and what we stand for. We do things differently and celebrate what makes us the same.

This way of life is bigger than our beaches. We’re the Gulf Coast Capital. Casually Charming. Collectively Cool. Creatively Curious. For lifelong Texans and Texans at heart. Or anyone who would rather spend time coasting their own way.

The Bayfront Seawall, one of Corpus Christi’s top tourist attractions, was constructed in 1928 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who later became famous for sculpting the iconic Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. A unique feature of the seawall is that it was made by mixing local saltwater from the bay rather than using the routine freshwater. Bonus for the kids: Along the mile-and-a-half stretch, gaze into the galaxy through the exhibition, “Journey Through Our Solar System.”

The Texas State Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Texas and one of the largest in the United States. Known as the “Original Aquarium of Texas,” the aquarium is dedicated to promoting environmental conservation and rehabilitation of wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico. Its first exhibition opened to the public on July 6, 1990, and it’s been welcoming visitors to interactive marine and coastal wildlife experiences ever since.

The Laguna Madre is one of only six hypersaline lagoons in the world. That means the water is saltier than the oceans, which makes it easier to float! Just don’t forget a life vest if you plan on boating or kayaking. Also of interest, there are areas in the Laguna Madre measuring more than five feet deep. (The largest hypersaline lagoons in the world average only 3.3 feet deep.)

The USS Lexington Museum on the Bay is as tall as a 19-story building and as long as three New York City blocks. It’s so large, you could play three football games at the same time on its flight deck! Drawing quite the buzz, the USS Lexington caught the attention of Hollywood director Michael Bay, who filmed all aircraft take-offs on the Lexington for his 2001 movie Pearl Harbor, starring Ben Affleck and Alec Baldwin. It also features the F-14 Tomcat used in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun Visit the iconic ship and marvel at its glory!

The Art Museum of South Texas showcases – and is – fine art in the city. The majestic buildings feature floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights, and many architectural touches that play off the South Texas sun and sparkling Corpus Christi Bay. The building is an art piece itself, but perhaps the most iconic exterior feature is the pink wall. People come from near and far to capture selfies on the wall for fun visual memories.

No problem – bring your pre-cleaned fish to participating “cookyour-catch” restaurants like Doc’s Seafood and Steaks. (Insider Tip: Most chartering companies will prepare and clean your fresh catch for you!)

NASCAR Hall of Famers

the Labonte brothers were born and raised in Corpus Christi. They developed their racing skills in the parking lot of Corpus Christi’s Yeager Elementary School. Bobby and Terry Labonte were the first pair of brothers to win premier series championships. What’s more, the brothers are also the only Texans to be inducted to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

After being named “America’s Birdiest City” for over a decade, Corpus Christi is home to the annual festival, Birdiest Festival in America. Bird Enthusiasts can expect to see over 200 species of birds during spring migration in Corpus Christi.

The South Texas Music Walk of Fame was established in Corpus Christi in 2004 to honor South Texas musical artists. Honorees represent diverse musical traditions, including Tejano, rock and roll, country, and jazz. “The Walk” is located in Water Street Market just steps away from the Visit Corpus Christi headquarters. Each star was handcrafted by local ceramists at Aloe Tile Works. Visitors love to view “The Walk” and take memorable photos of stars such as Selena, George Strait, and Kris Kristofferson.

Selena’s Legacy Lives on in the Coastal Bend

Celebrate the Queen of Tejano in her hometown by crossing off all the things Selena loved throughout your trip!

Since she was a child, Selena Quintanilla radiated energy, loved life, and could sing her way into people’s hearts, which led her to become one of the most iconic Latina singers in the world. She broke barriers in the maledominated Tejano music industry and earned the title of “Queen of Tejano.”

Breaking these barriers allowed Selena to expand the audience for Tejano music and contributed to a rise in Latin music popularity across the United States. She would eventually win a Grammy in 1994, making her the first Tejano artist to achieve this. She also was the first female Tejano artist to achieve gold record status.

Encounters with Selena were always memorable. On stage, she was stunning with a powerful voice, iconic costumes, and signature dance moves, but off stage, she was down to earth, had a smile that lit up the room, infectious laughter, and a personality that made anyone feel comfortable around her.

Now, 25+ years after her untimely death, her music continues to resonate in the hearts of many, her style continues to be imitated, and Corpus Christi continues to be a tourist attraction for all things Selena. Fans continue to celebrate her birthday, mourn her loss, and visit many of the locations representative of her life and legacy. Here is a look at Corpus Christi’s favorite spots that truly embody who Selena was and what she meant to the community.

ALL THINGS SELENA HISTORY
12 • CORPUS CHRISTI INSPIRATION GUIDE

MIRADOR DE LA FLOR

600 N. SHORELINE BLVD.

Located by the entrance to the People’s Street T-head is the popular “Mirador de la Flor,” a life-size bronze statue of Selena, by H.W. “Buddy” Tatum. The bronze likeness was sculpted with one of her many iconic stage costumes, signature hairstyle and bedazzled accessories, and leans against a concrete pillar, overlooking the Corpus Christi Bay. The memorial also features Selena’s favorite white rose, and a plaque facing Shoreline Blvd.

The walkway below the memorial, known as Paseo de la Flor (The Flower Walk), is adorned with beautiful tiles, bearing hand-painted whimsical flowers and music notes that were created by South Texas schoolchildren and senior citizens.

The statue attracts thousands of tourists each year, and is a popular spot for selfies, listening to music, and sharing memories of Selena. If you visit at night, small colored lights above the statue create an ambiance mimicking a concert stage but reminding visitors that although she is gone, she still shines brightly over the Coastal Bend.

SELENA STAR AT THE TEXAS WALK OF FAME

300 N. WATER ST.

In 2004, Corpus Christi got its very own Walk of Fame which honors different musical artists from South Texas, including our beloved Selena! Each artist that is honored receives a single, custom-made star with musical notes bearing the Texas flag, immortalizing their artistry. The walk begins in front of

Water Street Oyster Bar and circles the fountain in front of the Executive Surf Club, which is where Selena’s star is situated.

SELENA MUSEUM

5410 LEOPARD ST.

The museum, located at Q-Productions, the family’s music studio, brings to life the most important moments of Selena’s life and career. Guests can visit Monday – Friday, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and will find an array of original photographs of Selena’s childhood and throughout her career, her red Porsche convertible, her famous stage outfits, which she designed, gold and platinum records, and more. There is also merchandise available for purchase both in-store and via the website.

SWANTNER PARK

5426 OCEAN DR.

If you’ve seen the Selena movie, released in 1997, you might remember the flashback scene where young Selena (Rebecca Lee Meza) learns cumbia dancing, especially the “washing machine” from her mother, Marcella (Constance Marie). The beautiful area where this scene took place is Corpus Christi’s very own Swantner Park!

The scene begins with the portrayal of the Quintanilla family sitting on the Corpus Christi Bay Seawall, enjoying the fresh breeze as they share an intimate family moment, and turns into a dancing lesson for Selena. The park, with its paved walkway, which is perfect for family outings, jogging, biking, and the perfect view of the ocean, served as a significant backdrop for the film, and is now a popular tourist site.

MOLINA NEIGHBORHOOD & MURAL

4621 ELVIRA DR.

Selena lived in Corpus Christi’s Molina neighborhood, on the West Side of town at 705 Bloomington Street, with her husband, Chris Perez. The gate surrounding the home was quickly filled to the brim with flowers, stuffed animals, photos, and other fan-made tributes after her death, and continues to be a destination for tourists and locals alike.

The neighborhood is also known for the mural outside the Times Market at the corner of Bloomington and Elvira, featuring three watercolor portraits of Selena, her signature, and the words, “The goal isn’t to live forever...the goal is to create something that will.” The mural was painted by New York artist San Singuenza and is meaningful to neighbors with memories of Selena.

SELENA AUDITORIUM

1901 N. SHORELINE BLVD.

In the late 1970s, the Bayfront Auditorium was a popular destination for entertainment in downtown Corpus Christi. It was part of the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center, which is now the American Bank Center. In 1996, one year after Selena’s death, the Bayfront Auditorium was renamed the Selena Auditorium and continues to be one of the most attended venues for entertainment. Equipped with seating for over 2,500, modern sound and light technology, it’s the perfect place for live shows, the Corpus Christi Ballet, comedy acts, and so much more.

HI-HO RESTAURANT

3703 MORGAN AVE.

At some point on your trip, you’re bound to get hungry! A great place to stop by is the Hi-Ho Restaurant. This restaurant has been a staple in the Coastal Bend for over 45 years. With its delicious line-up of Tex-Mex cuisine, it’s a popular restaurant among the locals, but it also attracts many celebrities. It just so happened to be one of Selena’s favorite places to eat, specifically the Carne Guisada plate. The restaurant décor pays homage to Selena with never-before-seen photos and her artwork on the walls. This is a must-see destination, but don’t wait too long. Its parking lot gets filled quickly and it closes its doors at 2:30PM.

CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND HISTORY

1900 N. CHAPARRAL ST.

The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History features a small exhibit with a large significance to our community. The exhibit, called “Selena Remembered: Mirador de la Flor,” features a small bronze statue, the original mold’s design, and a brief history of the memorial located on Shoreline Blvd. Swing by and see the early concepts and work for the creation of the Mirador de la Flor, only at the CCMSH, while exploring the rich culture that made Corpus Christi what it is today.

Selena Quintanilla Perez, the Queen of Tejano Music, holds a special place in the story of Corpus Christi! The Selena Museum was built by the Quintanilla family to celebrate the life and achievements of their beloved daughter for Selena fans. The Selena Museum admission includes a tour of Selena’s stage costumes, collections and memorabilia including her red Porsche, Grammy award and so much more. Guests may even catch a glimpse of Selena’s family because Q-Productions is still a working studio and office! Share your Selena love and trip memories with us on social media. We’d love to see how you coast in Corpus Christi. @visitcorpuschristi #SeeCC #VisitCC

A comprehensive guide to Corpus Christi beaches

Corpus Christi’s beautiful beaches are the heart and soul of the Gulf Coast Capital. With so many beaches, ranging from calm waters to the best surfing destinations, plenty of opportunities await with something for everyone. Between the Gulf of Mexico and the Corpus Christi Bay, over 80 miles of sandy shores provide a variety of options when it comes to choosing the right beach for your trip.

BEACH SAFETY

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN

While the Gulf Beaches have lifeguards on mobile patrol every day of the week, it’s everyone’s responsibility to be mindful when venturing out into the blue. Here are a few tips to get your group up to speed on Coastal Bend water safety.

CHECK CONDITIONS

Check weather conditions before going in by looking at the local beach forecast and talking to the lifeguard at the beach.

LIFEGUARDS

Whenever possible, swim at a beach with a lifeguard present.

KNOW THE FLAGS

Check the flags displayed at the beach before entering the water. The flags are a warning system for surf and current conditions.

DON’T ASSUME

Great weather for the beach does not always mean it’s safe to swim or even play in the shallows. Rip currents often form on calm, sunny days.

1 PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE

MALAQUITE BEACH

LITTLE SHELL & BIG SHELL

The Padre Island National Seashore is the most significant undeveloped barrier island in the world and offers more than 130,000 acres of dunes, grasslands, and beaches. It is situated 30 miles south of Mustang Island State Park and is a prime location for taking in the gulf’s breeze.

This national park is also a haven for all sorts of family-friendly activities and an untouched paradise of federally- protected wildlife.

Immerse yourself in the flora and fauna that populates this marshland environment with a short stroll along the Grasslands Nature Trail, where you’ll find a glimpse of animals that live inland, including coyotes, deer, kangaroo rats, ghost crabs, and more!

Bring your canoe and enjoy the shallow waters and protected areas of the Laguna Madre or try something more relaxing like fishing. Padre Island National Seashore is also the prime spot for camping with the whole family, and there are 5 main locations to choose from. Camping is available year-round, but campers need a camping permit. All spots are first come, first served, so don’t wait to secure your spot!

The Malaquite Visitor Center at Padre Island National Seashore holds a breathtaking observation deck for wildlife viewing. Since Corpus Christi is a birder’s paradise, this is an exceptional place for birdwatching when thousands of birds migrate through the park throughout the year.

Scavenge for small shells deposited by north currents at Little Shell Beach and comb through the sands of Big Shell Beach for larger shell discoveries. Both spots are great for beach combing if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. If not, stop by Overland America to get your adventure started. Whichever activity you partake in, it’s safe to say that Padre Island National Seashore is a beachside paradise for a gorgeous getaway. 20301 PARK RD. 22

Green flags are the most common of the colors you’ll encounter – this means the water conditions are safer for you to enjoy!

Yellow flags mean the conditions are moderately hazardous. This typically refers to wind conditions. Swimming is permitted but be cognizant of your surroundings.

Before visiting the longest undeveloped barrier island in North America, stop by Worldwinds Windsurfing, a fullservice windsurfing shop, and grab some rental gear. These aquatic creatures are just in their natural habitat. If you give them space, you’ll be fine!

BIRDs of a feather

Corpus Christi offers an unforgettable year-round birding experience, and with more than 200 species of birds in the area, it has been named the “Birdiest City in America” multiple years in a row by the Coastal Bend Audubon Society. The birds love our gulf beaches as much as we do, including the salt marshes and bays, woodlands, and grasslands.

Since these areas are so rich in supply of food options, a variety of species visit throughout the entire year.

For the ultimate birding adventure in the Gulf Coast Capital, we recommend planning your trip around the Birdiest Festival in America happening April 26 through April 30. Experience amazing spring migration along the Texas Gulf Coast in the busiest of U.S. flyways, with four days of keynote speakers, bird tours, workshops, a vendor trade show, and more.

Bird Island at Padre Island National Seashore is another fantastic opportunity for birdwatching, and camping sites are available for an overnight experience that you definitely won’t want to miss. The South Texas Botanical Gardens is another great option for birding.

VISIT CORPUS CHRISTI • 49

Corpus Christi is known as a fishing hot spot on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Many experienced anglers travel from all over the world to cast a line in the Laguna Madre, Gulf of Mexico, or Corpus Christi Bay. Don’t let the technical jargon and fancy equipment intimidate you – fishing for the first time is no sweat! Read on to learn more about fishing from local guide Jesse Torres.

Q: What is considered the best time of year to fish in the Gulf Coast Capital?

A: The best part about living here is that the fishing is great year-round! You can chase trophy trout in the winter, but the most popular time for maximum fish is late spring to summer. Spring and summer are when the most common species (redfish, speckled trout, black drum, flounder) are abundant, and the weather is hard to beat.

Q: Where is the best spot to fish in the area? Which is preferred, deep sea or surf?

A: I’m not sure I can narrow it down to just one area; there are so many places and options with our bay and flat system. People can choose to sight cast or fly fish in the vast area of flats we have. There are miles of beach for people to shark fish or just cast a line and see what picks it up. The best part of the Coastal Bend is that one can do it all here: bay fishing, surf fishing, and offshore.

Q: What are the benefits of a fishing guide, and how do you choose a fishing guide?

A: When you hire a guide, you’re going out with someone who has years of experience and knowledge of the waters and fish patterns. Most guides are on the water multiple times a week and can ensure a good time with plenty of bent rods. Choosing a guide can be as easy as looking on social media or even stopping by a local marina and asking about their in-house guides. Some guides even have websites.

Q: What should locals wear and bring with them when going fishing?

A: Usually, the guide provides everything, including bait and tackle, but the clients bring drinks, snacks, and sunscreen. I always recommend people wear a hat and a breathable shirt. The majority of guides will handle the fish cleaning and hand the fillets over in a bag for you to take home.

Q: Where do the locals hang out and buy their bait and supplies?

A: One of the most popular tackle shops is Roy’s Bait and Tackle, with its vast inventory. It has equipment for inshore, offshore, and everything in between. We have multiple excellent marinas and bait shops. I prefer Fisherman’s Bait and Seafood Market for bait, and launch out of Marker 37 Marina.

CHEF JOE BROCK

With a giant smile, a ton of energy, and a happy-go-lucky personality, Executive Chef Joe Brock is a Coastal Bend treasure and the locals flock to The Lookout for a taste of his Asian-Texan Fusion creations. He developed a passion for cooking by watching his mother, a Thailand-raised mother of seven, make meals from scratch, and the aromas that filled the kitchen would eventually nourish the incredible, talented chef he would become in the future. When he moved to Texas at the age of 5, he fell in love with Texan cuisine, and now, he enjoys mixing flavors from his Asian background with the Tex-Mex cuisine he’s grown to love. His cooking hasn’t just made an impression on the locals. Chef Brock’s flair for pushing the boundaries on flavor in his dishes caught the attention of a representative from Food Network after she stumbled across his Instagram page. In 2018, he became a contestant on Guy Fieri’s Grocery Games, where four talented chefs run through the aisles in a high-stakes grocery store cooking competition with curveball challenges along the way. He was called back to appear on the Food Network’s Ultimate , where contestants have the chance to whip up their best backyard dishes. Chef Brock has quite the resume under his belt, but one thing is for sure: He has a passion for his craft and loves to share it with everyone.

MUCH ado ABOUT micheladas

Have you ever been met with a Bloody Mary with maybe one celery stick and an over-cooked piece of bacon? Natural selection and evolution occur as a part of life, and I subscribe to the belief that the Michelada is coming for Bloody Mary’s neck. This beverage does not disappoint and could feed a table of four.

In all seriousness, though, the lore of Micheladas includes disputed origins. Perhaps they were created by Mexican General Don Augosto Michel, who in the 1910s would serve his soldiers beer with lime and hot sauce to revitalize his forces. Another tale involves a man named Michel Ésper at Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, during the 1960s. Ésper would ask for a beer with lime, salt, and ice, his refortifying beverage of choice. The drink’s recipe would gain new sauces and seasoning as time progressed. In these stories the name’s etymology would be “Michel’s ‘chelada’” or “Michel’s cold beer.” However, the translation can be further broken down to “mi chela helada,” for “my cold beer.” Either way, the lore and pragmatic analysis arrive at the same conclusion: a delicious cold brew with all the trappings, please.

This staple has grown beyond a drink and into more of an entrée. We aren’t upset by this evolution, but it is crucial information for those uninitiated. Being a cultural staple locally, Micheladas take on various forms, and depending on how you take your drink, a local institution will provide you with your fix. Most notable is Burger Beach Hideaway for its loaded Michelada, comparable to a clown car (in a good way) with the number of embellishments packed in. The Michelada culture in South Texas is prominent, so if you want to elevate your Bloody Mary (unbiased take), then pay homage to either Michael Ésper or General Don Augosto Michel and treat yourself to a staple of the Coastal Bend.
