February 2015 CARNIVAL 12 – 22 FEB Carnival in Cyprus may be traced back to classical antiquity and the festival of ‘Dionysia’, in honour of Dionysus, God of the Grape Harvest, Winemaking and Wine. The main events included a pompe procession, contests of dancing and singing, and the performance of Greek tragedies, including those of Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles.

The carnival feast continued in different forms during the Middle Ages, the periods of the Venetian, Frankish and Ottoman rule, as well as during the period of the British rule and over the years it moved away from the aristocratic halls and came out to the streets, squares and taverns, turning the carnival into a crowded public feast all over the island. Particularly in Lemesos, Carnival has taken a form of artistic expression and elegance; more than 12,000 people take part in the parades, with extravagant floats, serenaders, ‘mandolinatas’ and choirs, while thousands of people gather from all over Cyprus and abroad in order to enjoy and take part in the celebration.

GREEN MONDAY MON 23 FEB (Public Holiday) The first day of Lent, is a day of joy, laughter and vegetarian picnics. Green Monday is followed by a fifty days fasting period, during which Christians prepare themselves to receive the Redeemer, shunning meat and dairy products and living on a vegetarian diet. Events and activities take place in all towns and villages.

“THE BODY: lived experiences in ancient Cyprus” The exhibition presents antiquities dated from the Neolithic to the Early Christian period, originating from archaeological sites throughout Cyprus. Figurines, sculpture, vessels, jewellery, grooming and medical tools, musical instruments, and skeletal remains are presented, some for the first time to the public, inviting the visitor to explore some aspects of the ancient body’s lived experiences. Although bodies have left their traces in the form of skeletal remains or artefacts, the exhibition fleshes out the invisible male and female protagonists who were once active on the island of Cyprus. The Cyprus Museum also hosts in its Galleries the exhibition ‘Curating Body’, by artist Maria Loizidou. Loizidou curates her own works afresh, aiming to enter into a dialogue with the ancient cultural landscape of the island, but also with the spaces of the Cyprus Museum itself. In this way, new stimuli are received and new questions are set.

“Patterns of Magnificence: Tradition and Reinvention in Greek women’s costume” The multiform traditions of Greek women’s dress are among the richest and most splendid in the world. The exhibition illustrates the interplay of native tradition and western aesthetic by displaying superb originals from the 18th to the early 20th century, as well as the court dress of the first queen of the Greek independent state, Amalia of Oldenburg, and that of her successor, Olga, the Russian-born consort of George I (end of 19th c.). On display for the first time are two of the original dolls commissioned by Queen Olga to form a miniature gallery of local costumes. All 4

February 2015 costumes come from the superb collection of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation in Nafplio and the Benaki Museum in Athens, and the dolls from the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, Athens.

Sergey and Isadora By the most renowned Russian theatre directors Roman Viktyuk and the “Roman Viktyuk Theatre”. The play is based on the poems and biographical material of Sergey Esenin and the book by Isadora Duncan "My life". LARNAKA CITY CRUISERS (BIKING TOURS) Tourists and locals alike can view the sights of Larnaka from a different angle by renting a ‘City Cruiser’ biking tour. The special passenger bikes - which look a little like buggy carts with pedals - are already popular in other European destinations where riders (with very strong legs!) cycle with their passengers in the back enjoying the sights. The bikes are an environmentally friendly way to travel as they use a solarpowered battery, meet all European safety standards and are operated by trained riders who know first-aid. They are also suitable for people with disabilities.

There are three tours on offer: The City Centre Tour (which takes in the town centre with all its shops), The Arts and Culture Tour (which takes in the workshops and galleries of Larnaka), and a Historical Tour around the Town (which takes in the museums, churches and ancient monuments).

AGIA NAPA WALK Agia Napa and the Sea…A Different Dimension!

This “walk” (guided walk & bus tour) interprets the historic connection of the area of Agia Napa with the sea and the recent development of the village. The participants are driven to Cape Greco, to walk up to the table-topped hill named “Tigani” where they will have the chance to learn about the archaeology of the area, its connection with the sea, and get to know its natural beauties.
