ART EXHIBITION

All kingdoms smashed and buried in the sky The Office gallery presents a proposal by the Scottish artist and poet Robert Montgomery. It concerns six of Montgomery’s latest works, while two of the works have been created site especially for the Office exhibition, considering the fact that Kleanthi 2

January 2015 Christophides street, where “The Office” is located, shares borders with the buffer zone and eventually gets interrupted by it. Montgomery’s work begins with poetic text, which he writes himself and then makes sculptural, using forms that normally apply to other species and forms of speech but not necessarily to poetry. – So a text may be presented under the form of an advertising poster, a billboard, at times illuminated at night or burned against the dusk sky. – By adopting and remoulding the conventions of presenting utilitarian and commercial forms of speech, he makes the text more vivid and accessible, offering it a new dimension. Taking poetry out in the streets for a conversation with the public. The artwork ALL KINGDOMS SMASHED AND BURIED IN THE SKY, which also bears the exhibition’s title, is not only presented out in the street, but also supports its two ends on the existing buildings, making contact with the present architecture. Its content consists a kind of retrospective commentary on the future, in a direct dialogue with the location and the socio-political state of today’s Cyprus. The Island is par excellence a place from which many conquerors have passed and quite a few kingdoms have dissolved through time. Further, the work acts as a self-criticism for the British identity of the artist himself, considering that Cyprus was once a colony of the United Kingdom. The rest of the artworks are presented in the three interior spaces of the gallery and here the text maintains a more internal nature, like a series of watercolours in smaller dimensions. Venue: The Office gallery (Kleanthi Christophides 32, Nicosia within the Walls, Tel. +357 99 848 495 Visiting hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00 – 20:00

ONGOING till TUE, 17 FEB 2015

EXHIBITION

“THE BODY: lived experiences in ancient Cyprus” The exhibition presents antiquities dated from the Neolithic to the Early Christian period, originating from archaeological sites throughout Cyprus. Figurines, sculpture, vessels, jewellery, grooming and medical tools, musical instruments, and skeletal remains are presented, some for the first time to the public, inviting the visitor to explore some aspects of the ancient body’s lived experiences. Although bodies have left their traces in the form of skeletal remains or artefacts, the exhibition fleshes out the invisible male and female protagonists who were once active on the island of Cyprus. The Cyprus Museum also hosts in its Galleries the exhibition ‘Curating Body’, by artist Maria Loizidou. The works are the result of the artist’s career from 1981 until the present. Loizidou curates her own works afresh, aiming to enter into a dialogue with the ancient cultural landscape of the island, but also with the spaces of the Cyprus Museum itself. In this way, new stimuli are received and new questions are set. Venue: Cyprus Museum Time: Tuesday - Friday: 8.00 - 18.00 Saturday: 9.00 - 17.00, Sunday: 10.00 - 13.00, Monday: closed Every 1st Wednesday of the month: 8.00 20.00

EXHIBITION

“Europe. South East-Recorded Memories”

The exhibition features works by twentythree artists from eleven countries in Southeastern Europe, who address various aspects of collective memory, 3

January 2015 places of memory, different cultures of memory, as well as the role of image in these processes. With the use of photographs and videos, the artists examine through their works the ways which the past continues to be present in this particular region of Europe that has been marked by conflicts, hostilities and wars. The exhibition brings together artistic works that present very different historical narratives and, beyond that, different uses to which the camera can be put: as a device for producing matter-offact recordings or biographical accounts for subjective documentation or historical analysis or as a means for capturing the vestigial traces of an action. Organised by the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre and the Goethe Institut Cyprus. Venue: Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (Old Power House) Visiting hours: 10:00-21:00 (Tue-Sat). Closed on Sun-Mon. Free Entrance For further information please contact 22797400, www.nimac.org.cy ONGOING till MON, 2 MAR 2015

“The Nativity Stories” How much do we know about the story of the Nativity? Through a juxtaposition of imagery and text, form Byzantium and the Western Middle Ages to the esoteric and at times, highly personal readings of the 19th and 20th centuries, this exhibition focuses on the Nativity - and reveals what is not a single narrative, but an infinitely nuanced, and fascinating, unfolding of the stories surrounding the birth of Christ. Venue: A.G. Leventis Gallery Visiting hours: 10:00-17:00 (Thu-Mon), 10:00-22:00 (Wed). Entrance: 2 Euro (gallery entrance fee)

“Patterns of Magnificence: Tradition and Reinvention in Greek women’s costume” The multiform traditions of Greek women’s dress are among the richest and most splendid in the world. This exhibition brings together over forty superb originals form the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, many of which will be on display in London for the first time. They include the richly embroided costume from Astypalaia in the Dodecanese, the astonishing assembly of fabrics, colours, and jewellery from Stefanoviki in Thessaly and the sumptuously brocaded dress from Janina in Epirus. The exhibition will also illustrate the interplay of native tradition and western aesthetic by displaying the court dress of the first queen of the independent Greek state, Amalia of Oldenburg and that of her successor at the end of the nineteenth century, Olga, the Russian-born consort of George I. These costumes represent a synthesis that is emblematic of 19th century nation building. Along with these costumes the exhibition will display for the first time in public two original dolls from a series commissioned by Queen Olga to form a miniature gallery of local costumes. All but two of the costumes come from the superb collection of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation in Nafplio. The other two are being lent by the Benaki Museum in Athens and the dolls by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, Athens. The curator of the exhibition is the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation’s founder and renowned expert, Ioanna 4

January 2015 LARNAKA CITY CRUISERS (BIKING TOURS) Tourists and locals alike can view the sights of Larnaka from a different angle by renting a ‘City Cruiser’ biking tour. The special passenger bikes - which look a little like buggy carts with pedals - are already popular in other European destinations where riders (with very strong legs!) cycle with their passengers in the back enjoying the sights. The bikes are an environmentally friendly way to travel as they use a solar-powered battery, meet all European safety standards and are operated by trained riders who know firstaid. They are also suitable for people with disabilities. There are three tours on offer: The City Centre Tour (which takes in the town centre with all its shops), The Arts and Culture Tour (which takes in the workshops and galleries of Larnaka), and a Historical Tour Around the Town (which takes in the museums, churches and ancient monuments). These are the first bikes of their kind on the island and are certain to offer something unique to anyone who wants to see Larnaka and its sights in a memorable way. Cost: €12 (45 - 50 minutes) per bike (for two persons) with rider. For further information contact 70005960 or info@mycitycruisers.com. Website: www.larnakaregion.com

The walking tour Strolling around Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) aims to provide an overall picture of Pafos and how Pafos Town Centre evolved and developed from the late Byzantine and Medieval times to what as it was called until recently Κtima. The Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) is associated with the local everyday life of the population. For the Pafians though, Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) has so much more to it…. Through historic references, linked with some very important historic phases including Medieval, Ottoman, British and modern times; one will ‘walk’ into the past but will also get better acquainted with the commercial centre of Pafos. The walk is led by a licensed CTO qualified guide. It lasts about two and a half hours, including a half-hour break for refreshments. Starting point: CTO Information Office, 8 Agoras Str.
