June 2015 EVENTS IN CYPRUS SAT, 30 MAY – MON, 1 JUNE 2015 (Public Holiday)

KATAKLYSMOS (FLOOD FAIR - DELUGE) “Kataklysmos” is a popular religious feast celebrated only in Cyprus. “Kataklysmos”, which means flood, is found in the book of Genesis and in the Greek myth of ‘Deukalion’. A popular custom is the throwing of water to one another which symbolises the purification of the body and soul. The main festive day is Pentecost Monday, but the festivities start from the previous weekend in all seaside towns; Larnaca’s ‘Phinikoudes’ and Lemesos palm tree promenades, are transformed into open-air markets with stalls, along with Agia Napa, Protaras, Pafos and Latsi they organise various events like the ‘chatista’ competition – a folk tradition of improvised rhymes in Cypriot dialect – music concerts, traditional dances and water sports competitions. 15th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival │ Erdmann – Rohrer Quartet The Festival has established itself as the most important annual classical music event on the island, and has gained an international reputation for its quality concerts and magnificent settings. The Pharos Arts Foundation in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Zypern and the Institut Francais Chypre and supported by the Deutschfranzösischer Kulturfonds jointly present the fascinating Erdmann-Rohrer Quartet, comprising four of the most renowned jazz performers of our time: saxophonist Daniel Erdmann, cellist Vincent Courtois, guitarist Frank Möbus and drummer Samuel Rohrer. Daniel Erdmann and Samuel Rohrer stir fresh air into jazz music-making. Their jazz essentially questions the soloistic principle: in this music no soloist takes the focus, everything is focused on composition and form, expressed through the sound of the Quartet. Venue: The Olive Grove, Delikipos village Time: 20:30 Entrance: €15/10 Concessions & members of the Pharos Arts Foundation. Zenobia Week The Zenobia – now one of the top 10 wreck dive sites worldwide – was a Swedish roll-on-roll-off ferry, fully loaded with 104 trailers and trucks when she sunk on her maiden voyage to Cyprus in 1980, at a depth of 42 meters and 1.5 km off Larnaka’s fishing harbour. The wreck of The Zenobia is now lying on her port side and has become a protected artificial reef, with a unique marine life in and around it that makes it an absolute must dive site for all serious divers visiting Cyprus. During the Zenobia Week a lot of activities and events are organised; free cruises to the wreck with glass bottom boats, discounted diving sessions, an underwater video competition, free underwater scooters demonstration, SUP downwinder, a mass dive, a conference and a Photography & painting exhibition. They are also suitable for people with disabilities.
