PENTECOST - KATAKLYSMOS “Kataklysmos” is a religious and popular feast celebrated only in Cyprus. “Kataklysmos”, which means flood, is found in the book of Genesis and in the Greek myth of Deukalion. In both cases it refers to the destruction by flood of almost allliving creatures in order to give birth to a new and moral generation. The ceremonies last for a few days and take place in all sea side towns. Celebrations include various games, swimming competitions, boat races, performances of folk dances, competitions of popular traditionals songs known as “tsattista”, live music performances by famous Greek and Cypriot singers. The most popular custom of “Kataklysmos” is the throwing of water to one another (symbolises the purification of the body and soul) so be aware! Festival of traditional arts and products The festival is organised for the first time in Korakou village andl starts at 15:30 with an organised visit to Yiannoulas Lazarou Herbs Workshop and botanical garden followed by a donkey ride to the courtyard of Apostolos Loukas church where local shepherds will show how sheep milking and shearing is done. Guided tours will be in offer to the village’s chapels and at the primary school yard the will be presentations of traditional professions, arts and crafts, grape pressing and zivania distillation, wood carving, pottery, basketweaving, agiography and so much more. Maniera Cypria: 13th century icons in Cyprus The exhibition highlights the production of iconography in Cyprus during the 13th century and its Eastern and Western influences. During that time, Constantinople was under Latin rule and after the issuing of the Bulla Cypria mandate, the Church of Cyprus was placed under the Pope of Rome. This period is of paramount importance for the Byzantine art of Cyprus. The multicultural environment created on the island during the 1st century of the Frankish rule, the presence of the Latin Church, the artists coming to the island from the West, as well as the refugees from Syria and Palestine are all factors which influenced Cypriot iconography. The art of the time is a continuation of the rich Byzantine tradition of the period after
Solomos Frangoulides: The Artist – The Art Critic This exhibition presents Solomos Fragoulides, one of the pioneering painters of the first generation of Modern Cypriot Art, not only as a painter but also as a critic of art. The curators of the exhibition managed to gather this wealth of articles by Fragoulidis, published regularly in the newspaper Haravgi and New Age magazine, and to find in his writings a unique source of information on art in Cyprus at that time. The museographic approach and the selection of Fragoulides' works and texts help the visitor to reach the goals of this pioneering exhibition, while at the same time it contributes to the formation of new ways of understanding the work of Frangoulidis from the point of view of his time. Rooms to Contemplate: Content and Perspective of a Collection The exhibition aspires to display and bring out works from the most significant and richest private collection in Cyprus, that of the Cultural Foundation. “Amathous of Cyprus, a city most ancient” Amathous is one of the most interesting citykingdoms of ancient Cyprus. On the occasion of 40 years of excavations (1975–2015) of the French Archaeological Mission of Amathous, the Department of Antiquities in collaboration with the French School at Athens, is organizing this exhibition that covers a large chronological period, from prehistory to the first centuries of the Christian period. The exhibits are presented in four different thematic entities, which narrate the history of the city and the region of Amathous by providing information on public and private life, rituals, burial customs and commercial or cultural exchanges. The exhibition includes a brief reference to legends and traditions and the fact that the inhabitants of Lemesos, at least from the

Scala – Its Craftsmen Scala is the area that surrounds Larnaka Fort and Agios Lazaros Church. The aim of this walk is to explore the area and visit the Handicraft Workshops created by young ceramic artists most of who are inspired by ancient Cypriot art. The Walk goes through picturesque streets of the Turkish sector of Larnaka, where visitors have the chance to see traditional white washed houses, houses with kiosks and the present use of this residential area. Choir Encounters Pafos sings out. Vocal ensembles and choirs from Cyprus and abroad participate in a celebration of music from different countries and cultures. The Bridge of Music In line with the motto “Linking Continents – Bridging Cultures”, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra hosts guest artists in a rich and eclectic music programme. Harmony, rhythm and melody are seen and used as bridges between cultures and communities. Conducted by Ali Hoca, with the soloists Charis Hatzigeorgiou (violin) and Esra Poyrazoğlu Alpan (piano), this concert proves that supposed boundaries are not strong enough to limit the inherent power of art to bring people close. Open scene Mouttalos The revitalised Mouttalos area creates a natural backdrop to host open air events: Creative dialogue and co-existence will be promoted through a series of theatre productions and other events referring to the memories the area carries. The Goethe Institute, together with Achim Wieland and Marios Ioannou organise a series of events highlighting the myths and narrations about a common past as well as the way in which one community sees the other. Curated by Sholeh Zahraei, a series of films on the Mediterranean region will also be projected, in an effort to view the world through the eyes of others. The Cypriot singer Umut Albayark and a group of musicians will present traditional and contemporary Cypriot and Mediterranean songs. Aphrodite of Pafos in Antiquity The site of Aphrodite’s worship in Palaipafos and the surrounding area reflect an ancient tradition of worship of the great goddess of fertility dating back to the Chalcolithic period (3900 – 2500 BC). The Department of Antiquities presents Aphrodite of Pafos at her place of worship in the restored site of the Medieval Manor House, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Pafos International Film Festival (PIFF), an annual festival held every year in Pafos, will take place for a second year this June in the garden of Technopolis 20. PIFF is committed to support authentically independent short films and it aims to research, promote and develop the art of independent film making. The program includes screenings of short films and documentaries from Cyprus and abroad as well as workshops, masterclasses and lectures. Troodos Sport and Fun Festival Weekends full of Adventure in “The Green Heart of Cyprus”! Sunday, 4th June is dedicated to the Mountainbike Enduro. The riders will be starting from Olympus peak, the highest point in Cyprus and will be descending towards the villages around Troodos! Four different Mountain Bike routes (mainly descending) for the Enduro Mountainbike competition that will offer much fun and action to participants and spectators. On Sunday 11th June the Running and Mountain Bike Marathon competitions will take place. Participation is open to everyone.
