March 2015 EVENTS IN LEFKOSIA (NICOSIA) SUN, 1 MAR 2015 CONCERT
Brice Catherin & Annini Tsiouti Galina Ustvolskaya (1919 – 2006), Grand Duet John Cage (1912 – 1992), Two4 On one side, a woman. Born in 1919 in communist Russia, she lived secluded in a tiny flat in St-Petersburg, and wrote very few pieces, only when “God was asking her to”: Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya. On the other side, a man. Born in 1912 in capitalist USA, he was idolized by his fellow musicians and fans. He travelled the world like a superstar and is composer of countless works: John Cage. Yet, both have always been independent minds. Both always stood away from the musical establishment. The two pieces Brice Catherin & Annini Tsiouti chose to play are connected by a spirit of minimalism. As violent and radical as Ustvolskaya’s Grand Duet can be, its five movements consist of very few musical patterns, nailing anger and pain in the flesh of the listeners. On the very opposite, the extreme softness of Cage’s Two4 offers a unique moment of pure beauty and ecstasy, composed only with slow chords on the piano and long, quiet notes on the cello. This beautifully put together programme starts off with the atmospheric solo flute composition by Cypriot composer Artemis Aifotiti. This is suitably followed by Poulenc’s melodically profuse, colourful and at the same time profound flute and clarinet sonatas. Shostakovich and Saint-Saens were inspired to compose dance pieces for the rare combination of flute, clarinet and piano. Shostakovich invites the listener to swirl away with a set of four delightful character waltzes, whilst Saint-Saens, who had a special flair for folk dance forms, dazzles us with his witty tarantella. A. AIFOTITI: Atmospheres ΙΙΙ for solo flute Fr. POULENC: Flute Sonata Fr. POULENC: Clarinet Sonata D. SHOSTAKOVICH: Four Waltzes for flute, clarinet and piano C.
