If you’re visiting during the warmer months, you’re in for a treat! There are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors in Williamson County, from scenic trails for hiking and mountain biking to kayaking and fly fishing on the Harpeth River, you’ll love exploring the beautiful Tennessee hills and waterways around Franklin.

HIKING

The stunning Preservation Park is a 200-acre park located in Thompson’s Station. The park’s 3.4-mile Battlefield Trail takes you through rolling pasture land (and site of the Battle of Thompson’s Station) up to the top of a massive grassy hill with a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. Continue on the Depot Trail to enjoy the dog park and community garden!

Part of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail Highland Rim section, the Garrison Creek Loop Trail is located at milepost 427.6 near the Leiper’s Fork exit along the historic Natchez Trace Parkway. This 1.3-mile loop is great for all skill levels. Hike just beyond the loop to see the War of 1812 Memorial!

Also located on the Natchez Trace Parkway, Timberland Park features more than three miles of secluded trails

through lush forests and meadows. A great place for viewing wildlife, each of the 10 trails offers a variety of difficulty for all hiking levels, including an ADA-accessible trail.

Tucked away near Brentwood, Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary is a great place for hiking - with six different trails for both new and seasoned hikers - and learning about wildlife. Purchase a $5 day pass online for access, and check their calendar for guided hikes, family-friendly events, and other fun educational activities at owlshill.org.

BIKING

Follow the designated bicycle route that stretches 444 miles along the Natchez Trace Parkway. With its scenic views, historical landmarks, and innumerable side trails to discover, Natchez Trace Parkway is the perfect route for anyone looking for an unforgettable ride.

If you’re looking for an easy-going ride, try the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park trail that winds through a major Battle of Franklin site just in front of historic Carnton.

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced mountain biker, Wilkins Branch Mountain Bike Trail has a route for you. Trail levels are marked by color, and helmets are required on the mountain bike only trail.

HARPETH RIVER

Paddle Dog Adventures offers canoe and kayak rentals on Westhaven Lake and river adventures on the Harpeth and West Harpeth Rivers.

Take a guided fishing or wading trip, have a one-on-one fly fishing lesson, or take a cruise down the beautiful Harpeth River with Franklin Fly Fishing Co! Experience is not required, and equipment is provided for each booking.

Bring your own fishing rod (and fishing license) to one of the public access points located along the Harpeth River! Catch smallmouth and largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and more, or cool off in the river’s shallow waters (please use caution).
