Opera is Gozo 2024

Page 1

OPERA IS GOZO

Gozo’s vibrant opera scene may come as a surprise to many, but with some of the world’s most prominent artists performing in our theatres every year, the island has become an international hub for the art.

Our love of theatrical performance dates back to the 17th and early 18th centuries. During those years the demand for operas, pageants, theatrical and dramatic productions boomed as the Maltese embraced what had previously been entertainment reserved solely for the nobility. Performances by amateurs and theatre professionals were held at the Knight’s Auberges around the city of Valletta.

Gozo is renowned for its rugged countryside, impressive coastline and imposing Cittadella, however since the 1970’s, it has also forged a name for itself in the world of opera. This began with the staging of its first opera, Giacomo Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, held at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora.

October has become synonymous with a number of operatic events on the island of Gozo, evoking eager anticipation by opera enthusiasts. Opera in Gozo is a unique phenomenon, an inspiring reflection of a Gozitan characteristic, a sense of commitment and dedication to our cultural heritage through extensive hours of voluntary work devoted to each production.

This year’s main attractions are Giacomo Puccini’s Il Trittico and Giuseppe Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco.

Il Trittico, which will be held at the Teatru tal-Opera Aurora, is a trio of one-act operas of love and loss and is considered to be one of the most expensive undertakings for any opera company.

Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco, which will be performed at Teatru Astra, marks its triumphant return to enchant audiences after an absence of over 170 years, when it was produced for the first and last time in Malta, at the Royal Opera House in 1852.

As Minister for Gozo and Planning, I invite you all to attend these performances and above all enjoy and appreciate the endeavour that leads up these exhilarating acts. Our objective is to sustain these impressive undertakings which are integral to the island’s calendar of events.

IL TRITTICO

Step into a world of intense emotions and gripping narratives with Giacomo Puccini’s Il Trittico, a triptych of one-act operas that promises to captivate and thrill. Eight years after his monumental success with La Fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera, Puccini returned with this ambitious masterpiece, showcasing his unparalleled ability to evoke the human condition. To celebrate the centenary of Puccini’s death, Teatru tal-Opra Aurora proudly presents Il Trittico in 2024, featuring Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi.

Il Trittico runs the gamut from high drama and heartbreaking tragedy to devilish black comedy and farce. The recurring theme of entrapment binds these operas together: in Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a wife is trapped in a loveless marriage; Suor Angelica depicts a woman confined to a life she did not choose; and Gianni Schicchi features a dysfunctional family ensnared by a shameless conman. This trio of operas vividly portrays love and loss, promising an unforgettable experience for all opera enthusiasts. Join us in celebrating Puccini’s legacy with this masterful presentation of Il Trittico.
