Along the westernmost branch of the Kymijoki River, the charming old Strömfors Ironworks welcomes visitors as an open-air museum with its picturesque surroundings and artisan traditions. There are also an art gallery, restaurants, craft shops and outdoor activities in the area.

At the time it was built, Alvar Aalto’s Sunila became known as the world’s most beautiful industrial area. It received international recognition in the 1930s and has remained as Aalto’s largest work including a factory and a residential area. Today life in Sunila is as ordinary as it can get despite the architecturally significant surroundings.

The Salpa Line Museum at Miehikkälä displays the history of fortification works of the Salpa Line. The permanent exhibition of the museum consists of the exhibition and multimedia shows at the museum cafeteria and of guided tours to the fortifications on the outdoor museum area.

Following the Salpa Line, the 50-kilometre Salpa Trail acquaints hikers with interesting sights along the Salpa Line, and the beautiful nature and cultural environment of Southeastern Finland. The oneway route starts from the shore and passes through forests, hills, fields and the Salpa Line Museum in Miehikkälä and Bunker Museum in Virolahti, all the way to Ylämaa in Lappeenranta. Along the way, you can study information boards to learn more about the Salpa Line.

The Bunker Museum in Virolahti is a military history museum with a focus on local culture and ecological innovations. It has a permanent indoor exhibition including a 15-minute multimedia short film on the history of Salpa Line, and an outdoor area.
