Explore Lillehammer and Gudbrandsdalen – a destination with stunning scenery, unique attractions, and great adventures
Lillehammer The famous pedestrian street in Lillehammer offers a cosy village feel rarely found in urban settings. Storgata, lined with idyllic wooden town houses, provides the framework for a modern and friendly shopping experience and is an attraction in its own right. Lillehammer is renowned for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1994 and the Winter Youth Olympics in 2016, and has several Olympic Arenas well worth a visit.
Sjusjøen og Nordseter 4 6 Sjusjøen and Nordseter are the mountain areas closest to Lillehammer. Both are located less than 20 km from the town centre, and offer cross-country ski trails of which several are groomed for freestyle skiing. In March, thousands of skiers participating in the 54 km long Birkebeiner Ski Race pass through Sjusjøen on their way from Rena to Lillehammer. Sjusjøen is also excellent for alpine enthusiasts with Sjusjøen Ski Centre offering downhill skiing as well as a cross-country and biathlon arena.
Hafjell, Hunderfossen, Øyer 1 Wide range of adventure activities within a small radius: Hafjell Alpine Centre is the ultimate ski resort, offering something to suit all age groups and skill levels. The cross-country ski trails in Hafjell and Øyerfjellet form part of Norway’s largest and best trail network. Hunderfossen Winter Park is an enchanting experience in snow and ice. At Lillehammer Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, you get to try adrenaline-filled Olympic activities. Other attractions include the Norwegian Road Museum, Lekeland Hafjell, and many others. Kvitfjell is home to Norway’s most spectacular alpine runs, created for the 1994 Winter Olympics. On the eastern side of Gudbrandsdalen are the breathtaking Ringebufjellet, Venabygdsfjellet, and Rondane – a stunning high-mountain experience with way-marked ski trails. Ringebu is often referred to as Norway’s smallest town, and has a history as a commercial centre dating back to 1899. Here you will find a wide selection of speciality shops in charming surroundings.
Vinstra, Gålå, Kvamsfjellet and Rondane National Park 12 5 10 14 Visit the central part of Gudbrandsdalen, and discover a spectacular mountain skiing area as well as a host of cultural experiences in an authentic setting. Vinstra forms a famous part of the World of Peer Gynt, and is the region’s centre. Gålå offers skiing in gentle high-mountain terrain, and the ski centre Gålå Alpin is perfect for the whole family. On the eastern side of the valley is Kvamsfjellet – a gateway to Rondane National Park. In February you can take part in the Furusjøen Rundt race, also known as the Adventure of Rondane.
Skeikampen, Espedalen (Gausdal) and Skåbu 3 7 8 Skeikampen, some 45 minutes by car from Lillehammer, is a resort ideal for crosscountry and alpine skiing. It is located in the mountain area known as the World of Peer Gynt, where you also find Kvitfjell, Gålå, and Espedalen. Espedalen in Vestre Gausdal is another fantastic starting point for outdoor pursuits, whatever the season. It is also home to Helvete Nature Park featuring Northern Europe’s largest potholes.
Rondane and Langsua National Parks
14 15
Rondane National Park is a high-mountain area between the Gudbrandsdalen and Atndalen valleys, and towers over vast, lichen-covered mountain plateaus. Langsua National Park is an extensive mountain landscape north-west of Lillehammer, and this family-friendly area offers easy access to outdoor adventures all year round. Last winter was the first time X Games was held in Hafjell. This year, the circus returns – with awesome skiers and snowboarders putting on a show that the whole family will love. Hopefully, there will be great success and plenty of medals for the Norwegian competitors.
This year, the World Cup in Kvitfjell celebrates its 25th anniversary. Once again, the world’s best ski racers will compete at the mountain that today has status as one of the great classics of alpine sport. The event organisers in Kvitfjell are looking forward to welcome a full Norwegian national team competing for important World Cup points on home snow. GUDBRANDSDALEN AND LILLEH A MMER WINTER 2017/18

The charming village Ringebu has a big selection of special shops and a welcoming pedestrian zone. In 2011 Ringebu was awarded with the “Bymiljøprisen” (the price for the most welcoming and cozy city) with competition from sixteen other places and cities in Norway. ”Landsbygalleriet Ringebu” is an outdoor photo gallery in Ringebu village, accessible to visitors all year round. The pictures are taken by local photographers, as well as one guest photographer, all from the age of 15 to 75. The pictures are located on selected houses around the central area of Ringebu village, and the motives are changed four times a year. This makes the gallery a dynamic attraction for all visitors. www.ringebu.com

Sustainable development for high-quality travel experiences Visit Lillehammer is currently working towards a sustainable destination certification. Becoming a sustainable destination requires collaboration between destination companies, municipalities, and tourism operators in order to achieve environmental, social, and economical sustainable development.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER...
Foto: Bård Gundersen
Peer Gynt at Gålå in 2017 was a great success, with a record number of visitors and excellent reviews. This coming summer, Jakob Oftebro and Nils Ole Oftebro will both be back in the role as Peer. If you missed this critically acclaimed play last year, you have a golden opportunity to visit in 2018. The Peer Gynt Festival also comprises a number of other events, such as the mountain concert “By Rondane”. Programme and tickets available at www.peergynt.no

Peer Gynt Festival, 4–13 August
The travelling theatre at Maihaugen during summer has become immensely popular – and with good reason! You get to experience life as it was 200 years ago, and will have a great time in the company of others. Explore log buildings and farms from the 1800s, experience urban life in the 1900s, and recognise the more modern buildings from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Maihaugen offers wonderful adventures for both young and old.

summer’s programme. The runners go first and will compete on 9 June, whereas as the MTB event is held on 25–26 August. All fitness levels and age groups are catered for. A natural target to train for, all year round.

Hunderfossen Family Park
The country’s very own fairytale adventure park. With over 60 activities for the whole family, this Foto: Esben Haakenstad
is one of Norway’s most popular tourist attractions. Doors open for the summer season in May. In July, the trolls come to life when the sun sets and you can experience the “Night of the Trolls” – a spectacular play at the Kongsgården amphitheatre.

Literature Festival, 30 May to 4 June

Kitty L. Kielland (1843 - 1914) was a pioneer in Norwegian art. She was one of the first Norwegian artists to translate French 19th-century ideas about art into a new, neo-romantic style in her own country.
