On my first hike across Besseggen, I stood transfixed at the top looking out towards Jotunheimen. The view in front of me was awe-inspiring. By Per-Arne Andersen
Gone was the notion of grey, rough and demanding mountains. This was just beautiful. Never before had I seen summer and winter at the same time, and never before had I seen blue and green lakes side by side. The feeling of looking into a national romantic painting was breathtaking. Towering peaks piercing the clouds, and dramatic glaciers clinging to the steep mountain sides. The memory is as clear as if it was yesterday. Tiny me – surrounded by spectacular nature. I was convinced there was nothing like this elsewhere in the entire world.
Northern Europe's highest mountain Jotunheimen features the 22 highest mountains and the highest density of glaciers in Northern Europe. Naturally, it is highly popular among mountaineers and glacier enthusiasts from all over the world. Ever since the 1800s, people drawn towards high mountains have visited Jotunheimen to realise their alpine dreams. Jotunheimen is where the soft and the jagged meet – cold meets warm, and the wild meets the idyllic. It is a mountain area offering everything a hiking enthusiast can dream of. In this highest wilderness of Northern Europe, you can experience four seasons in one day. Hiking in Jotunheimen is filled with spectacular contrasts.
Facts about Jotunheimen Jotunheimen National Park was established in 1980, and covers an area of 1,145 km2. It was made a national park to protect a wild and beautiful mountain area comprising 22 of Northern Europe's highest mountains. Most of the park is above the treeline at approx. 1000 metres above sea level, and only the deepest valleys drop below this by a few metres.
Besseggen and Galdhøpiggen – walks suitable for most people Although Jotunheimen is a climber's paradise, it is also a place where most people can realise their alpine dreams. It is often assumed that the jagged and

steep mountain formations are only for mountaineers, skilled in the use of climbing ropes, carabiners and belays – and who hardly know the meaning of vertigo. Besseggen and Galdhøpiggen are the exceptions. These are hikes where you can feel some of the courage of a mountaineer – without actually needing it. This is why these trips have become more popular in Norway than any other mountain hike.
Besseggen – the people's mountain The most common route is by boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, and then a hike up Besseggen back to Gjendesheim. For this option, you have to get on one of the early boats. An alternative is walking from Gjendesheim. You will then hike down Besseggen, and can enjoy the spectacular views of Jotunheimen. If you find the hike across Besseggen too demanding, it is possible to walk along the lake. This usually takes 3-4 hours. If you are not tempted by any of the walks mentioned, a trip with the boat on lake Gjende is an excellent alternative. The
Photo: Terje Rakke/Nordic life
breathtaking scenery you will experience from the boat may well inspire you to change your mind on hiking in the area.
Galdhøpiggen – the people's peak The most common route starts by Juvasshytta. This will take you across a glacier, and you will walk as part of a rope team much of the way. An exciting adventure, but a guide is required if no one in your group are experienced in glacier walking. Your place on a rope team can be booked in advance, or you can arrange this at Juvasshytta when you arrive. The largest teams may have as many as 50 people, and this long line zigzagging across the glacier can be quite a sight. An alternative is starting at Spiterstulen. This route does not lead across the glacier, and is way-marked with "T" all the way to the top.
How fit do I have to be? The hikes to Galdhøpiggen and across Besseggen can be completed by most people in good physical condition. But what does good physical condition mean?

Architecture in FjellNorway When you visit somewhere new, the buildings often tell you a lot about the area. And FjellNorway is no exception. On Tverrfjellet in Dovre, stands Tverrfjellhytta – the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion – a unique, robust building that carries on the building traditions of the past. The building recently won the prestigious World Building of the Year Award, in the ‘visitors centre’ category. Interesting architecture is also found in Lille-hammer Kunstmuseum (art museum), an elegant, modernist building in the heart of the town. Buildings that really leave marks on the cultural landscape are churches. There are nine stave churches in FjellNorway, all of which were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The churches are beautifully decorated and most are open for guided tours in the summer season.

– the Olympic City; gateway to Gudbrandsdalen; the centre of events; the centre of sports; the centre of culture. Beloved child has many names. This small, charming town, located at the northern end of lake Mjøsa, has an incredible amount to offer. Enough to promise that you will be able to: Create your experience. By Anders Lindstad
Lillehammer is widely known as a cultural centre. The region has produced two of Norway's three Nobel Laureates in Literature – and their residences, Aulestad and Bjerkebæk, are today open to the public. In these homes, the history of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Sigrid Undset is brought to life. The Lillehammer Painters is another concept associated with Lillehammer as a culture hub. From the 1880s onwards, the town was visited regularly by renowned Norwegian painters. The artists stayed for shorter or longer periods, and many of their paintings are on display at Lillehammer Art Museum – together with numerous other national treasures. Jakob Weidemann was also a painter based in Lillehammer, and several of his works are exhibited at the same museum. Paintings signed Weidemann are also on display at Maihaugen, an open-air museum featuring 200 buildings, exhibitions, restaurants and adventures for people of all ages. Maihaugen is Norway's largest museum outside Oslo, and is located within walking distance from Lillehammer's renowned pedestrian street. Culture in Lillehammer is more than renowned museums such as Maihaugen, the Olympic Museum and the Art Museum. Every year, the town plays host the largest Festival of Literature in the Nordic region, the Dølajazz festival and cultural
gatherings in connection with sporting events. A wide range of concerts, productions and plays are also available. Furthermore, the town has become a regional driving force in film, and the TV-series Lilyhammer has put it firmly on the map.
Sport and activities "The decision is Lillehammer" and the Olympics are important to the region. Today, an increasing number of athletes decide on Lillehammer – either as a place to live or study, or as a training arena. The winter destinations of Sjusjøen, Kvitfjell, Hafjell, Skeikampen Venabu, Rondablikk, Skåbu, Espedalen and Gålå are within easy reach, and offer excellent snow conditions and fantastic skiing opportunities – and in summer, visitors can enjoy Norway's most complete cycling experience. You do not have to be a top athlete to benefit from all this. And you do not have to move to Lillehammer. The trails, tracks and slopes valued by top athletes are easily accessible to all. There is room for everyone. Towards the Gudbrandsdalen valley opens a unique world of nature experiences, whether you prefer speed and action down the river rapids or the peace and tranquillity the mountains have to offer. With Jotunheimen on one side of Gudbrandsdalen and Rondane on the other,
Lillehammer is also an ideal starting point for walking, fishing and hunting in some of Norway's most popular mountain terrain.
Lillehammer – the destination of choice Many are in a hurry to get to Lillehammer. In autumn, the town has an influx of some 5000 students. Combined with other visitors, it all adds up to a very vibrant Lillehammer with a culture scene and choice of restaurants far superior to most other towns of its size. Most in a hurry are the Birkebeiners. When the 17,000 participants in the Birkebeiner Races put on their skis or get on their bikes at Rena, it is all about reaching Lillehammer as quickly as possible. No need for you to be in such a hurry. But you will be pleased to arrive – you too.
In Lillehammer you will find: • Gågata pedestrian street – unique wooden buildings and welcoming shops/ cafés/restaurants • Hunderfossen Family Park – the fairytale park for the whole family • Hafjell Bike Park – Norway’s most amazing lift-based biking experience • Lillehammer Olympic Sliding Centre – experience the G-force as you enjoy this high-speed adventure • Lysgårdsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena – take the lift or the stairs to the top for spectacular views of Lillehammer and the Gudbrandsdalen valley • Annual cultural and sporting events, such as the Birkebeiner Races (mountain biking, skiing and running), World Cup Nordic, Peer Gynt Festival and Norwegian Festival of Literature

The Olympic town Lillehammer is situated right in the heart of FjellNorway, close to the mountains and Lake Mjøsa. Lillehammer is best known for its pleasant pedestrian street, the Maihaugen open-air museum and its large Olympic venues. Gjøvik offers qualities from the urban town centre to the beautiful and vital rural communities. Surrounding it all are rolling hills, green forests and the shiny mirror of Lake Mjøsa. Fagernes is region centre of Valdres with restaurants, art galleries and folk museum, and the host of many large and small festivals throughout the year. National tourist route Sognefjellsvegen Between Lom and Gaupne (108 km): Between fjord and valley, the road winds its way up over a mountain with blue ice, jagged peaks and emerald green mountain lakes. At Fantesteinen 1,434 metres above sea level, the route takes you through the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe. Winter closed. The mountain route between Sognefjorden and Bøverdalen was opened to motor vehicles in 1938. The mountain pass is closed during the winter, but is plowed on around 1 May. It is an exciting experience to drive along the road, hemmed in by snow banks of up to 10 metres in height. The layby at Mefjellet is shaped like an amphitheatre of natural stone, with panoramic views over the mountains and plateaus. Here, towers artist Knut Wold’s stone sculpture. The glass map at Nedre Oscarshaug helps you to get your bearings, allowing you to identify Hurrungene, Skagastølstindene and other mountains. Sognefjellet provides access to the Jotunheimen National Park with 27 of the highest mountain peaks in Norway. A detour from Gaupne takes you into the Jostedalsbreen National Park where you will find the magnificent Jostedalsbreen glacier covering almost 500 square kilometres, the largest glacier in Norway.

a hidden gem between Rondane National Park and Alvdal Vestfjell. The route follows Atnavassdraget from Sollia, through Atndalen to Gruvebygda Folldal. Along the entire route, Rondane and “De Blå Fjella” (the blue mountains) provide a magnificent and beautiful backdrop to the west side of the road. According to the artist Harald Sohlberg, Norway’s national painting, Vinternatt i Rondane (winter night in Rondane), came about after he became entranced by the Rondane massif one sparkling winter’s night. The stretch from Enden to Folldal, along the Fv 27, is one of 18 roads in Norway selected as National Tourist Routes. Along the route, spectacular laybys and viewpoints have been built, adapted for experiences relating to nature. Experience the view from Sohlbergsplassen, a quite unique piece of architecture peeking out from between the trees. Enjoy the scenery in peace and quiet, explore the Stone Age animal pits, climb peaks over 2,000 metres above sea level, experience the old mining community, taste your way through a living mountain dairy culture, fish in crystal-clear rivers, paddle or ride, drive a dog sled or ski.
transport of people and essential goods. Winter closed.
Valdresflye Fv. 51 Between Garli (Beitostølen) and Besstrondsæter (37 km). The road across Valdresflye provides endless vistas as it hovers free and light above the mountain plateau, with excellent views towards Jotunheimen National Park. The road’s highest point is 1,389 metres above sea level. The journey also passes through an old cultivated landscape with summer farms in the mountain pastures and traditional tourist attractions. Great starting point for mountain hikes, such as the famous Besseggen. Winter closed.

Experience the mountain roads The Peer Gynt road from Skeikampen to Gålå (60 km) Drive through some of Norway’s most beautiful mountainous terrain. The main mountain road through Gudbrandsdalen takes your right into the “Kingdom of Peer Gynt”
The Bjørnsonvegen mountain road from Lillehammer to Skåbu By turning off the northbound E6 for Lillehammer or at Vinstra (Gudbrandsdalen), you can drive along the Fv. 255, Bjørnsonvegen mountain road, in scenic surroundings. The road is surrounded by a lush cultural landscape with beautiful farms along the valley floor in Vestre Gausdal to the open mountain valley of Espedalen Historic architecture and steep fields in one of Norway’s most high-altitude rural communities Skåbu. Along the Fv. 255 – Bjørnsonvegen – is the home of writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (Aulestad). Here you will find small country churches, galleries, theatre, art and crafts, potholes with concerts in the summer, dairy farms, fishing lakes, horseback riding (horse race in Sikkilsdalen in June), boat rental, cycling and hiking, and pleasant accom-modation and diners rooted in local culture and culinary traditions. Fv. 255 – Bjørnsonvegen – makes a rewarding detour from the E6, and also gives you the opportunity to continue over the mountain via Jotunheimvegen across Valdresflya and on to the west
coast fjords, or a day trip along Bjørnsonvegen to Espedalen and return via the Peer Gynt road.
The Jotunheimvegen mountain road Between Bygdin and Skåbu (45 km): Jotunheimvegen takes you through open, accessible mountain terrain with views across high mountains and stunning lakes. Look out for the reindeer grazing in the area, and the old animal pits at Store Nuten. Experience mountain dairy farming along the Vinstervatn lake with its grazing goats, cattle and sheep. Sanddalen is a heritage site. Panoramic views of Buhø and Vassklepp. At Haugseter Fjellstue, you have every opportunity to go canoeing, hiking, climbingthe peaks, fishing and cycling. From Kvålseter, there are signposts to the restored 17th century falconry facility. At Nørdre Sandåa, restoration of an old fishery is underway. Skåbu is one of Norway’s highest altitude farming communities with a church well worth a visit, a village museum and Krogenæs møbelfabrikk furniture factory. Petrol station and shops at Beitostølen and in Skåbu.
The Peer Gynt Seterveg (farm road) Starts at Sødorp, Vinstra. The trip across Østfjellet to Kvam has a lot to offer. After just 2.5 km, you pass the Peer Gynt farm, Hågå, where it is said the role model for Ibsen’s Peer once lived. With 18 old buildings, the farm is privately owned and
provides overnight accommodation during some parts of the year. At the toll gate a few kilometres further up the road, you can buy fishing permits for the rivers and lakes along the route. The highest point is at Krøkla, 1,109 metres, offering spectacular views of both Rondane and Jotunheimen. On your way down from Krøkla, you pass many idyllic mountain dairies still in operation. At Toksesetra farm, a restored water wheel is fully operational. At Kvamsnyseter is the wonderful Jøråfossen waterfall At Rondablikk Høyfjellshotell, the views of Rondane and Furusjøen lake are amazing. We recommend taking a short detour to Hovde, where there is a path all the way around the lake and a ferryboat also operates. From Rondablikk, you drive through the lush Veikledalen valley down to Kvam, and from here you can either cross the river over the bridge and take the back route to Vinstra, or take the E6 to Vinstra and then the Fv. 255 to Skåbu and Espedalen.
Grimsdalen Between Dovre and Folldal lies “Grimsdalen”, one of Norway’s longest valleys, which has always served as a passage between Gudbrandsdalen and Østerdalen. The mountain farms (52 in total) date back to the 16th century, and in several places you can find remains that testify to settlements from as far back as the 14th century. The trip starts in Dovre and ends up in Folldal.

A FjellNorway round-trip FjellNorway round: Lillehammer – Skeikampen – Dovrefjell – Lesja – Vågå – Valdresflya – Beitostølen – Fagernes – Gjøvik The journey starts at Lillehammer. This vibrant, small town offers museums such as Maihaugen, the Olympic Museum, Lillehammer Art Museum, Aulestad and Bjerkebæk. Visitors can also experience the ski jumping arena and its magnificent views of the town, or feel the G-force at the Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track. From Lillehammer, follow rv. 255 through Gausdal and up towards the mountain at Skei. Skeikampen is one of the country's best areas for mountain biking. The choice of routes ranges from gravel roads and old cart tracks to more technically demanding and fun mountain trails. Skei can also offer horseback riding, tennis, hiking, fishing and an 18-hole golf course. From Skei, the journey continues along the Peer Gynt Route, the "mountain highway through Gudbrandsdalen", which leads to the world of Peer Gynt. This is a drive through a beautiful natural landscape, with mountains, dairy farms and lakes. The road is named after Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, and every summer you can meet him as the play is performed on the open-air stage by lake Gålåvatnet From the Peer Gynt Route, follow the E6 to the "roof of Norway" at Dovrefjell. Here you can enjoy a guided musk-ox safari. Dovrefjell is one of the few places in the world you can experience the muskox in its natural habitat. The area is also ideal for mountain hikes. Up in the mountain, you will find Viewpoint SNØHETTA – an award-winning visitor centre with panoramic views of the Snøhetta massif. Leave the E6 by Hjerkinn, and follow signs for Viewpoint SNØHETTA. Continue up the trail for 1,500 metres until you reach the view-
38
point. From Dovrefjell, head south. Along the E6 from Hjerkinn to Dombås, you will find Fokstumyra Nature Reserve. From the E6, a detour west on the E316 towards Lesja Rural Museum – Slådalsvegen – Valbjør Gård/Nordigard Blessom is recommended before you continue the journey via Valdresflya. The National Tourist Route Valdresflya (Fv. 51) offers beautiful views of the mountains and plateaus of Jotunheimens National Park. Jotunheimen is a popular hiking area, and has numerous way-marked trails. Take a break at Kalven Seter with its barista dairy maid, and enjoy a freshly brewed coffee as you take in the views of lake Lemonsjøen. A popular trip is the Gjende boat to Memurubu, and then a hike across Besseggen back to Gjendesheim. As the journey continues along Fv. 51 to Valdres, you will find Beitostølen – one of Norway's most popular mountain-cabin areas. With its welcoming village centre, and choice of restaurants, cafés and shops, this is a winner both summer and winter Beitostølen is an excellent starting point for a wide range of walks and bicycle rides suitable for both adults and children. Mountain routes designed for cycling are popular, and one of the most spectacular is called Mjølkevegen. You can either cycle all the way from Vinstra in Gudbrandsdalen to Gol in Hallingdal – over 200 km – or only ride parts of the route. Through Valdres, the route offers beautiful mountain terrain and Stølsvidda, one of Norway's most active dairy farm areas.
Fagernes is the largest village in Valdres. It is home to Valdres Folk Museum, which, with its 100 buildings and farmyards, is one of the country's largest open-air museums. Explore life at the old mountain dairy farms with grazing animals and buildings from the 1700s. Valdres is renowned for its rakfisk (half-fermented trout). Most of Norway's rakfisk is produced in Valdres, and on the first weekend of November every year, a Norwegian Rakfisk Festival is held at Fagernes. The journey continues to the Gjøvik region via E16/Rv.33, where you will find a welcoming town centre ideal for a stroll. Gjøvik Chokolade is one of Norway's very few chocolate factories, and should not be missed. Neither should Gjøvik Olympic Cavern Hall – the world's largest arena built inside a mountain. The region boasts a long history in glassworks, and both Gjøvik Glassworks and Hadeland Glassworks are well worth a visit. For fishing enthusiasts, region offers excellent opportunities with the large Mjøsa trout as the most prestigious catch. The final part of the round-trip is a voyage with the white swan of Mjøsa – Skibladner. This is the world's oldest paddle steamer still in operation. Whether you opt for a short or a long trip, the scenery you will experience as you travel on lake Mjøsa is spectacular. On board, you can enjoy a gourmet meal in Første Plads Madsalon, where salmon and strawberries are some of the specialities. Recommended journey time: 2-5 days, depending on routes and activities chosen.

A FjellNorway round-trip Around Jotunheimen: Fagernes – Beitostølen – Valdresflya – Lom – Sogndal – Øvre Årdal – Fagernes Fagernes, the regional center in Valdres, is an excellent starting point for a round trip covering the two national tourist routes of Valdresflya and Sognefjellet, which are also the two highest mountain passes in Norway. Fagernes is home to the Valdres Folkemuseum, the third largest folk museum in Norway, with a stunning location at Storøya by Strandefjorden. From Fagernes, drive North on Fv. 51 towards Beitostølen. The trip through theØystre Slidre valley is characterised by a beautiful landscape with small farms, lakes and forested hills. Along the way, galleries, potteries and silversmiths make a great place to stop. At Beitostølen, you are at the entrance of Jotunheimen.Beitostølen is the largest all-year tourist resort in Valdres, with skislopes, shops, cafés, several hotels and a wonderfully surrounding terrain. At Bygdin, here are a number of hikes to choose from, that will give youfantastic views over the lakes of Bygdin and Vinstre, the Jotunheimen National Park and over large parts of northern Valdres. If you would like to experience Norway’s highest running boat service at 1,060 metres above sea level, jump on board the historic M/B Bitihorn and sail across the lake to Eidsbugarden and back. Along the way, you will pass several of Jotunheimen’s two thousand-metre peaks. From Bygdin, the route ascends to Valdresflya, with its highest point at 1,389 metres above sea level. To the west, Leirungsdalen and east
Jotunheimen gradually come into view. A hike over Besseggen to Gjende is FjellNorway’s “crème de la crème” of hikes, and you can take a boat trip on the lake Gjende. The trip continues down Sjodalen. The wild river Sjoa, roars beautifully down on its journey towards Heidalen and Gudbrandsdalen. The best way to experience the river is on a white water rafting trip. Otherwise you can take the easy route on foot down to Ridderspranget, where the river falls through a narrow gorge. In Randen, you turn left onto the Rv. 15 to Lom, the “capital” of Jotunheimen, which among other things, is home to Norsk Fjellmuseum (the Norwegian mountain museum), one of the best bakeries in Norway and Lom stave church. From Lom, you take the Fv. 55 towards Sogndal. From Bøverdalen, there are side roads through Jotunheimen to the tourist lodges Spiterstulen, Juvasshytta and Leirvassbu. If you are planning to climb a two thousand-metre peak, perhaps the highest of them all, the 2,469 metre-high Galdhøpiggen, is a great place to start. Other attractions include a guided glacier tour and a visit to Klimaparken 2469 (climate park) at Galdhøpiggen Sommerskisenter (summer ski centre). The route ascends yet further to Norway’s highest mountain pass, Sognefjellet at 1,440 metres above sea level, where the view is dominated by wild mountains, glaciers and lakes. The trip now continues in a series of steep hairpin bends down to Fortun and Skjolden, on Lusterfjorden. The transi-
tion from mountain to fjord is magnificent and the landscape dramatic, before the road winds along the picturesque Lusterfjorden, with orchards and flower meadows at the foot of the high mountains, to Sogndal. From Hafslo, you can take a detour down to Solvorn, where you park the car and take the ferry across to Ornes. A 15minute walk uphill takes you to Urnes stave church, the oldest in the country and part of the UNESCO cultural heritage. From Sogndal, the trip continues on the Rv. 5, via Kaupanger with its stave church, to the ferry quay at Mannheller. The car ferry takes you across Sognefjorden, and at Fodnes on the other side, you turn left on the Fv. 53 along Årdalsfjorden to Øvre Årdal. Experience the Vettisfossen water-fall which, with its 279 m drop, is Norway’s highest unregulated waterfall. A cycle ride from Hjelle into Utladalen is an easy day trip for those who so desire. From Øvre Årdal, the road is steep and winding along the Fv. 53 to Tyin. The trip is rounded off along the E16 in an idyllic cultural landscape through Vang and Vestre Slidre, back to the starting point in Fagernes. The route takes you past several stave churches, working historic farms, galleries and other cultural and historic sights on this beautiful final stage. Recommended time: 2-5 days, depending on what you choose to do along the way. Fjellnorway.com

Take Rv. 4 from Oslo to Gjøvik, which is situated by Norway’s largest lake, Mjøsa. We recommend a visit to Gjøvik’s Olympic Cavern Hall, Olympic Arena and the world’s largest cavern hall for public use excavated in rock. At Gjøvik Glassworks, which opened in 1807, you can experience the traditional craft up close. “Mjøsa’s white swan”, the paddle steamer Skibladner, has sailed the waters of lake Mjøsa since 1856. Enjoy a boat trip through the beautiful cultural landscape. From Gjøvik, follow Rv. 33 towards Valdres. Visit Lands Museum in Dokka before continuing on to Møllerstufossen. Here you will find the 6,000-year-old rock carvings. The area is also perfect for swimming in the small waterfalls and pools. Along the E16, we recommend a visit to Valdres Folk Museum in Fagernes. The museum houses Norway’s largest collection of national costumes. Take a short hike up to the Kviteberg hill. The walk is clearly marked, and along the way, the history of the old homestead is told. The walk takes about half an hour and gives you a great view of Fagernes. In Valdres, the traditional mountain fams are still in operation. Get a feel of the simple farming life, with grazing livestock and perhaps a taste of fresh cheese from the dairy. When you follow the E16 towards Bergen,
Sogndal
you will pass by Slidredomen, a unique stone church dating back to the Middle Ages. In Øye, you will find the Øye stave church, one of six stave churches in Valdres. We recommend a guided tour which will take you back to the Middle Ages, before continuing across Filefjell. The road traditions across Filefjell date back to the Old King’s Road to Bergen. From 1933, Filefjell was winter cleared, making it the first year-round mountain pass between East and West. Between Aurdal and Lærdal, you drive through the world’s longest road tunnel, Lærdalstunnelen, which is 24.5 km long. The final destination is Bergen. With its traditional wooden buildings, “Bryggen” in Bergen is listed on UNESCO’s world heritage list.

RECOMMENDED TRIP 2 Oslo – Geirangerfjorden Via Skreia – Gjøvik – Lillehammer – Gausdal – Randsverk – Lom Take the northbound E6 from Oslo towards Trondheim. Make a stop at Eidsvoll. In 1814, Norway’s constitution was adopted in Eidsvollbygningen. From Eidsvoll, you take the E6 to Minnesund, turning off onto highway 33 through the idyllic Toten on route to Gjøvik. Here, we recommend a visit to Gjøvik’s Olympic Cavern Hall, the world’s largest cavern hall for public use and Olympic arena in 1994. At Gjøvik Glassworks, which opened in 1807, you can experience the traditional craft at close quarters. “Mjøsa’s white swan”, the paddle steamer Skibladner, has sailed the waters of lake Mjøsa since 1856. Enjoy a boat trip through the beautiful cultural landscape. From Gjøvik, the trip continues along Rv. 4 to Lillehammer. Lillehammer was the Olympic town in 1994, and we recommend a stroll down the town’s pleasant pedestrian street. Lillehammer Kunstmuseum, one of Norway’s leading art museums, is to be found in an elegant, modern building in the heart of Lillehammer. For breathtaking views of the city, climb the ski jumping facility, Lysgårdsbakkene. And don’t forget to visit the open-air museum, Maihaugen, Norway’s largest museum outside Oslo. The trip continues along Fv. 255 towards Gausdal. Nestled in scenic surroundings is Aulestad, writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s beautiful home. Today the place is a museum and one of Norway’s best Sandane preserved artists’ homes. Onwards along Fv. 255 through Espedalen, there is ample opportunity to take a breather. Take the time for a trip into Helvetes jettegryter (Hell’s potholes), Northern Europe’s largest – a walk in the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery. Follow the Fv. 255 to Vinstra, and take the northbound E6 towards Trondheim. When you get to Sjoa, we recommend the Fv. 257 through Heidal. River Sjoa is Europe’s best white water rafting river, where you really feel
the rush. The cultural landscape here has several old farms to show. Take the trip on foot across Besseggen, Norway’s perhaps most spectacular mountain walk. In combination with a boat trip on Lake Gjende, this provides you with an experience of FjellNorge’s majestic scenery. At Randsverk, the trip continues along the Fv. 51 towards Lom, a pleasant village where you will find one of Norway’s largest stave churches. Lom is also home to a mountain museum, a famous bakery and the gateway to the Jotunheimen National Park. Here you have the opportunity to experience the impressive mountains, including Northern Europe’s highest mountain, Galdhøpiggen, at 2,469 metres. We also recommend a visit to the climate park, Klimapark 2469, at Juvasshytta lodge. The trip then takes you along Rv. 15 and Fv. 63, allowing you to experience Geirangerfjorden, which are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The areas of natural beauty here embrace some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world. Allow an extra day for each physical activity, such as hiking in Jotunheimen or white water rafting in Sjoa. Åndalsnes Geiranger 63

Norway’s most beautiful railway journey Leave the car at Dombås and enjoy one of Norway’s most beautiful train rides. A trip on the Raumabanen railway gives you the unique opportunity to get up close to one of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty Norway has to offer. Raumabanen runs between Dombås and Åndalsnes, and the trip takes an hour and 40 minutes. The experience can be combined with a train ride on the Dovre-
banen railway, which runs between Oslo and Trondheim. The Raumabanen trains have large panoramic windows, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the view. You get an incredible view of Trollveggen, Europe’s highest vertical rock face. .
Guided train: From June to August, you get that bit
Recommended trip 4 Take the E6 across Dovrefjell to Trondheim: From Dombås towards Trondheim, you pass Dovrefjell. This is the realm of the musk ox and you really get a sense of the wilderness when you join a guided musk ox safari. Dovrefjell also has its own view pavilion, a distinctive building that frames the beautiful mountain massif Snøhetta. Kongsvold Fjellstue mountain lodge/ hotel is well worth a stop en route to Trondheim. Follow the E6 across the mountains to Oppdal. From Oppdal, it is just under two hours to Trondheim, and the road takes you past several salmon rivers and a varied cultural landscape. In Trondheim, you start with a bite to eat in Trondheim’s charming old quarter, Bakklandet, and then a walk around the town. Nidaros Cathedral is a must, and afterwards you can visit one of the city’s many museums, take the boat the Munkholmen or people watch in the pedestrian street Nordre Gate or at Solsiden.
extra on Raumabanen: – At the most spectacular places, the train slows right down – At the famous Kylling Bru bridge and at Trollveggen, the train stops to allow passengers to take photos – A guided tour over the PA systwem – You receive a map of the journey telling you about the experiences en route
