Road description/distances: The Gudbrandsdal valley stretches from Lillehammer to Rondane National Park a total distance of 104 km or a drive of 1 hour 40 min by car. The Espedalen valley starts at Lillehammer and ends at Skåbu or Vinstra. The total distance is 88 (115) km or a drive of 1 hour 30 min by car. You can take the Gudbrandsdal valley back to Lillehammer or continue your journey north towards Trondheim. Into Norway’s round-trips are ideal in combination with a journey west to the fjords, north-east to Røros and north to Trondheim and Northern Norway.

CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS
Maihaugen Maihaugen is one of Norways largest outdoor museums. With a collection of more than 200 houses from as far back as the 12th century and until today, the museum shows ancient and more recent history. By using actors in a plot from different time periods, the museum succeeds in making a very authentic and real experience for the visitors. On the old farms from around 1800 you will meet the farmer and his family. See how they lived and worked. The animals on the farm and the beautiful scenery adds to the experience.
Exhibitions Maihaugen also offers several exhibitions all through the year. “We won the land” shows Norways history all the way back to the ice age and until today. The Rural collection represents the rural community in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. Here you can find the timberbuild farms, the stave-church, the summer-pastures and the lumber-camp. The Town illustrates life between World war one and two in an inland town. Along the main street are old buildings from Lillehammer, creating intimate courtyards. The Residential Area consists of seven single-family houses from different decades of the last century. The landscape The grassing animals are shaping the landscape at Maihaugen, and the fields are cultivated in 1890’s manner.

“The Letter” is a mysterious wandering play where the audience takes part in solving a mystery with some strange letters. “The Postal history” is an entertaining play that shows the postal history in 20 minutes. In the high season you may join the guided tour This tour is like a play which starts in 1900 at the pharmacy and ends in the Futuristic house 2001. Along the way in The Residential Area you will enter homes from different decades of the 1900s.

Peer Gynt Get to know the Norwegians through their favorite stage play, Peer Gynt. Expect an evening full of adventures when you attend one of the most popular Norwegian stage plays of all time; Henrik Ibsen’s, Peer Gynt, with music by Edvard Grieg. The play is set outside, by the shores of beautiful Lake Gålå, as nature serves as one of the main characters. It also offers a great playground for the more than 80 actors performing in the piece. Myths and icons, from Norwegian folktales, were of great inspiration for Ibsen, while writing Peer Gynt.

Lillehammer Art Museum
The museum is one of the nation’s leading art museums, and houses a collection consisting of approx. 1400 works by Norwegian artists dating from the 1800s and until today. The museum´s permanent collection comprises Norwegian visual art from the 1800s up until today. It is considered one of the country´s most important art museums with particularly important and representative works from the years 1820 – 1930.
Dimentional Art The museum also presents three dimentional art of different artists, material and time. Enjoy the unique atmosphere while walking around in the museum.

The Matisse Students. In 1905 Norway became an independent nation again. The desire of a national art and culture became important. A lot of arts students traveled abroad, particualry to Paris. Norwegian Olympic Museum Lillehammer is best remembered as the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics, and is considered Norway’s oldest winter sports resorts. The Norwegian Olympic Museum reopens with a brand new and exciting world class exhibition at Maihaugen Museum Center February 12th 2016. The museum emphasizes on the Norwegian Olympic history and in particular our role as host for two Olympic Winter Games, Oslo 1952 and Lillehammer 1994. The Youth Olympic Games 2016 will commence as we open, and is part of the exhibition. A section will also be dedicated to Paralympics.

Lillehammer Olympic City
Lillehammer is best remembered as the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics, and is considered Norway’s oldest winter sports resort. It’s defintely worth a visit in the summer for its beautifully preserved late 19th-century wooden houses, with Storgata as the main pedestrian shopping street in the heart of the old city center. Lillehammer provides you with a combination of long-standing tradition and modern activities and services. You will find excellent museums and galleries, Olympic venues, a large number of restaurants and wide selection of shops.

“Lysgårdsbakkene” Ski Jumping Arena The ski jumping arena was built for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994, and has become the iconic symbol of Lillehammer internationally. In the summer-time, you will see the Olympic rings on the landing area of the hill, and the hill records are clearly marked on both hills.
Chair lift at “Lysgårdsbakkene” A chairlift will take you from the bottom of the hill to the ski jumping tower at the top of the largest hill. From the open-air terrace at the Ski Jumping Tower, you can enjoy a panorama view of Lillehammer and Lake Mjøsa. This is a popular site for visitors to take photos. You can also ride the chairlift down the hill to get a feel of what the ski jumpers experience soaring down the hill. If you are in decent shape, you are welcome to walk the 954 steps up or down the ski jumping hill for free.
Lillehammer Olympic Bob- and Lugetrack. The bobsleigh and luge track is located at Hunderfossen, 15 km north of the centre of Lillehammer The wheel-bobs are in operation throughout the summer season. Each wheel-bob seats 4 passengers - in addition to an authorized pilot, and reaches speeds up to 100 km/hr. The sleds have safety features such as rollover bars and netting. Helmets are mandatory and safety instructions are given by the pilot ahead of each run. The age limit is 10 years when accompanied by an adult and 12 years when not accompanied by an adult.

Ringebu Stave Church
Christianity was introduced into Norway around the year 1000 A.D. From then on during the Middle Ages until 1537, approximately 1000 stave churches were built. The Church in Norway was Roman Catholic at that time. The stave church at Ringebu, built c.1220, is one of 28 surviving stave churches and is one of the largest.
Ringebu Stave Church is located 60 km north of Lillehammer. Turn off E6 1 km south of Ringebu Centre. Open for tours during the summer. Opening hours In the main season 6th July - 2th August: 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The rest of the summer, the church will be open 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. The church is closed at church events.
The Stave Church exhibition at the Ringebu Rectory Ringebu Rectory, built in 1743, enjoys a beautiful setting north of Ringebu Stave Church, and was in full use until 1991. Today, this listed and restored rectory is an historic experience in its own right. There are 5 buildings in the yard; the main building, two storehouses, staff quarters and an outbuilding.
The Village of Ringebu was awarded the State urban price in 2011 for its pleasant outdoor spaces and meeting places. It is often referred to as Norway’s smallest town. Here you’ll find a wide range of special businesses in a nice village centre, and a traditional trade center that was founded in 1899. The Village offers a wide variety of specialty shops, including Anni’s sausage factory, that has received numerous gold medals for its sausages and meat products. Market traders offering handicrafts, second hand and antiques, jewelry, paintings, coffee, waffles and more.

Kittilbu Museum Kittilbu open-air museum provides an insight into how the natural resources of Gausdal Vestfjell have been used from the Stone Age to more recent times, and has interesting exhibitions and a small café serving local, organic treats. The museum also operates as a visitor centre for Langsua National Park.
In July and August, visitors can enjoy themed guided tours with focus on flora, fauna and climate, and also mountain farm experiences and cycling adventures. From the museum, visitors can follow a cultural trail through a landscape marked by generations of use – from Iron Age activities and elk hunting to more recent dairy farming and hydropower development. The 1.5 km trails ends by lake Dokkfløyvatnet. We offer guided tours to the museum and it’s exhibitions as well as to the culture trail. We are also happy to provide information about other hikes and attractions near by, such as the national park, Langsua.
Langsua National Park, Southern Norway’s most recent area to be awarded protected status, is an ideal day out for the whole family. Young and old can experience everything from wilderness to mountain dairy farms, and the distances are short. The terrain is gentle, but also features peaks with panoramic views. Skaget, with its 1685 m a.s.l., is the highest, whereas Langsua stretches 1553 m a.s.l.

Kulturstua i Ro Kulturstua i Ro (“The Cultural Cottage at Ro “) is a mountain farm from the 1100s with old log buildings and steep terrain. There are horses and hens, herb gardens and flowerbeds on terraced plains. All food is homemade, and the culinary experiences are seasoned with stories of traditional cookery. The original Cultural cottage consists of two continuous old houses with open fires. Here most of the food is prepared and served.
Lina and Tor are the owners and the warm and welcoming hosts of Kulturstua i Ro. They greet you with a smile and excellent knowledge. The have preserved old food and cooking techniques, from the use of boiling stones from the Stone Age, to great gandma´s kitchen with an open cooking stove. They have built authenic locations for the serving and storytelling of the food.
The Farm Restaurant serves food with local ingredients cultivated at the farm and with local producers, it is harvested in the woods and the mountains, and is made by the unique hosts Tor and Lina. They have specialized in wild food and fish, preserving traditional prepreation techniques as smoking and graving. The guests also appreciate Lina´s homemade bread, and the taste and smells of the unique herb garden. The food is presented by Tor and Lina themselves as they tell the story of the food combined with their unique knowledge. Sygard Grytting Sygard Grytting is a distinguished medieval farm hotel, with a history dating back 700 years. It is among Norway’s most beautiful and best preserved of its kind, and looks like it belongs in one of the folk legends. Guests can stay in farm buildings dating from 1650 to 1860, and enjoy a hearty traditional meal prepared with fresh ingredients from own vegetable and fruit garden. The hosts at Sygard Grytting are the 16th generation owners of the farm.
Hilde and Stig are the owners and the warm and welcoming hosts of Sygard Grytting. They are both dedicated and involved in the farm, both with agriculture and daily running. Stig with his skills in old building techniques has moved and re-built several of the old wooden houses at the farm. Hilde is the creator of the unique food experiences through local food and natures own recources.
Meals at Sygard Grytting should fit the surroundings and be a grand experience in themselves, and the hosts take great pride in serving the very best of home-cooked food based on local traditions and specialities. Most of the ingredients used are from the farm and its surrounding area, and all food is made from scratch. On the menu are dishes of lamb, elk, reindeer and mountain-lake fish.
