Local must-see?
I always take people to LHUCA (p. 80). The culture there and what’s being developed is phenomenal. One of the best art trails in the country takes place there the first Friday of every month.
For a night out?
People who haven’t been to Louie Louie’s Piano Bar (p. 88) lose their minds because of the great entertainers. You get to participate and sing. No one ever leaves there unhappy!
Favorite restaurant?
I love Wiley’s Bar-B-Que (p. 18). I get either their chicken or their ribs.

Favorite hidden gem?
It has to be Ralph’s Records (p. 54). I love how much local music they have! You have to dig sometimes, but they have a great mix of everything.
Favorite local artist?
In my book, Dirk Fowler is like Andy Warhol. I love going to Bar PM (p. 85), not just for the Jalapeno Buttons, but to see a lot of his work.
Best Lubbock winery?
I really love McPherson Cellars (p. 73)! Go by and get a cheese platter with a glass of La Herencia.

Sugar Brown’s (p. 11) is the greatest place! It has a cool vibe, and their Skinny Vanilla Latte is the best I’ve ever had.

Jim & Patti Douglass Lively Lubbock Locals, Married 24 Years
Favorite Lubbock wines?
We love McPherson Cellars’ DBS (p. 73) and Llano Estacado Winery’s Viviano (p. 73). It’s good and award-winning.
Favorite place in town?
A great place to go is The Funky Door Bistro & Wine Room (p. 24). The wine comes out of the walls, and that’s not a hallucination.
Lubbock’s best-kept secret?
We love to go to Lubbock Moonlight Musicals (p. 80). We’ve seen Les Misérables many times. What we saw in Lubbock was as good as anything we’ve seen in New York, London or anywhere else.

Best place for kids?
The Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater (p. 37) is awesome! My favorite thing is the big air balloon that you get to control. We also went during their Butterflies Alive! exhibit, and a butterfly landed right on my friend’s nose.
Best pizza in town?
It’s definitely West Crust Artisan Pizza (p. 21). I got to see them toss the dough and make the pizza. Their Margherita pizza is probably my favorite!
Favorite museum?
You have to go to the Buddy Holly Center (p. 35). You get to see a lot of his old stuff. We went during their Summer Showcase and heard a lot of live music.

Lubbock welcomes millions of visitors each year and with those visitors come plenty of inquiries. Check out our top five favorites.
– 74 –
01
WHY IS LUBBOCK CALLED THE “HUB CITY?” Surrounded by five major highways, Lubbock is the commercial and entertainment center for the region. If you loo k at it on a map, it gives the appearance of a hub on a wagon wheel.
02
IS IT BUDDY HOLLY WITH AN “-LLY” OR “-LLEY?” It’s kind of both! Although he went by “Buddy,” his given name was Charles Hardin Holley. When Decca Records drew up his first contract, they mistakenly left off the “e” in Holley.
03
DO YOU RIDE HORSES TO WORK? We were named the No. 1 Western Town by True West Magazine in 2016, and we love to ride horses. While we don’t saddle up for our daily commute, we love the mental image of horses trotting down the freeway.
04
WAS THE CHILTON REALLY CREATED IN LUBBOCK? All our research points to yes. The story is that a certain Dr. Chilton instructed his bartender at the Lubbock Country Club to mix the juice of two lemons with vodka and club soda and serve it over ice with a salted rim.
05
WOULD I KNOW ANYONE FAMOUS FROM LUBBOCK? Natives like Natalie Maines of the Grammy award-winning Dixie Chicks, Mac Davis, and of course, Buddy Holly all hail from the “Hub City.” John Denver, Pat Green and many more came through Texas Tech on their rise to stardom as well.
