SOURCE //CITY OF LUBBOCK
As travelers make their way back to the airports, load up their cars for family road trips or plan a staycation, Lubbock, Texas is eager to welcome you to the “Hub City!” For some, Lubbock is a college town that holds a nostalgic place in their heart, for others, it is a growing city on the top of their list of destinations to visit. No matter how you choose to experience the 806, this is Lubbock, Texas. Recently, Lubbock opened its doors to the newest luxury boutique hotel in downtown Lubbock, the Cotton Court Hotel, designed to replicate a vintage cotton gin. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to recent growth in the “Hub City.” Just north of the hotel, the region’s newest world-class performance theater, The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences, will spotlight local talent, Broadway productions and headline national touring concerts. Local artisans and musicians find their creative outlet through the spirit of inspiration that runs through Lubbock. As the birthplace of Buddy Holly, the first designated cultural arts district in the state of Texas and more recently designated a music friendly city, Lubbock celebrates its artistic roots on stage, on display and on record. Anyone who has tasted a glass of Texas High Plains wine knows that winemaking is truly an art. Home to 90% of Texas wine grapes grown in the region and the father of Texas wine, Doc McPherson, visitors will taste the legacy of Texas wine from one of our six award-winning wineries. With an average of 265 days of sunshine per year, enjoy a Lubbock libation on one of our many patios around town. While sipping Lubbock wine, experience the taste of the LBK! Lubbock’s selection of local cuisine is as expansive as it is rich. From Spanish tapas and perfectly seared cuts of beef to fresh seafood flown in daily, Lubbock serves the ideal selection for all occasions. As internationally trained chefs across the city put a local twist on global cuisine, each bite is better than the last. However you choose to visit Lubbock, we hope you’ll share your “Hub City” adventures with us using #LiveLoveLubbock!

Offering Texeclectic Victorian fare, this steampunk pub and bar has a variety of tantalizing handhelds, each creatively named after a classic piece of literature. We recommend the Sure Thing Sherlock, a burger generously topped with green chile pimento cheese. Pro tip: wash down with an expertly-crafted Old Fashioned.
CHRISTAKIS 1111 34th St. // From the outside, it looks like a burger shack built in the ‘50s, but on the inside it looks like your grandma’s house decked out in Red Raider and Lone Star State memorabilia. The menu features the popular Red Raider Burger, which includes double meat and double cheese. We highly recommend the Christakis Burger, an unusual, but incredible combination of pastrami and cheese melting down the side of the burger, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles that all synchronize in perfect flavor harmony.

BRUNO STEEL HOUSE 85 E. Canyonview Dr. (pictured right) // A great place to bring your pup! Located above a sparkling lake in Ransom Canyon, there are nature trails nearby and plenty of areas for you and your dog to explore.
TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY 2500 Broadway St. // Texas Tech University is the nation’s second-largest campus, which means there is a lot of space to walk and explore with your pup. There’s even an app called ArTTrek that acts as your tour guide as you wander past the various artwork around campus. It’s a fun way to see the school and exercise your fur baby!
J’S CREAMERY 5101 82nd St. // J’s Creamery has not only mouthwateringly good cones, sundaes, splits and more, they also offer “Puppy Cones” for dogs.
THE RANGE 3116 122nd St. // A driving range that has a restaurant and bar, The Range is really something special, and is truly fun for the whole family. Sally was so mesmerized by our golf strokes, that we almost forgot she was there!
THE GARDEN 1801 Buddy Holly Ave. // This lively craft beer garden has games, live music and some of the best weekly specials in town. Not only that, but they love dogs! We spent an entire evening there, playing games, making friends and relaxing with Sally. It was fun for the whole family.

HALFWAY TO THE SLOPES On your way to the slopes? Make the “Hub City” your go-to for all skiing needs and one last stop on your way up to the mountains.
TROY’S SKI LUBBOCK 3403 34th St. (pictured above) // Grab a new pair of Volkl, K2 or Nordica skis with binding for your trip down the slopes. You’ll also find ski and snowboard boots there!
TEDDY JACK’S HUB CITY GRILL 7205 Milwaukee Ave. // Fill up on a handcrafted burger like the Santa Fe with green chiles, Monterey Jack cheese and grilled onions or the Sunday Sunrise topped with a fried egg, bacon and American cheese.
MOUNTAIN HIDEAWAY 4816 50th St. // Bundle up with must haves likes coats, gloves and hats. If you need an extra pair of goggles or hand warmers, this shop offers what you need.
TWO DOCS BREWING CO. 502 Texas Ave. // Bring a growler of the Buddy Hoppy IPA or another favorite brew with you up on the slopes. 34

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION? // Life and people inspire me. In my view, it is my task on this journey to express life musically. Music is powerful and I want to use that power for good.
DESCRIBE LUBBOCK’S MUSIC SCENE VIBE COMPARED TO OTHER PLACES YOU’VE LIVED OR PLAYED. // Lubbock’s music scene is a hidden gem! Otherwise, I would not still be here. The pioneering West Texas spirit is alive and well in the music community. I have been encouraged and supported on my journey. I am grateful for the legacy and the ability to talk to those who have built the scene so far, and get advice on how to continue building. I also love that I am free and encouraged to build what I want to see! HOW CAN VISITORS SEE/EXPERIENCE YOUR WORK? // If you want to check out what I’m doing around town, you can check me out on Facebook. You could search for my page or also a page called “I Love Lubbock Music”. I play every first Friday of the month at the West Table, and at Burklee Hill on Wednesdays. I love playing private parties, backyard parties or concerts.

STAIRS // The helical staircase is made of more than 110 tons of steel and stands without a center pole. Each level attaches to the staircase which creates the illusion that it is floating!
RAVE ON RESTAURANT // A tribute to Lubbock’s favorite son, the restaurant Rave On is operated by United Food and Beverage Services and occupies a 2,500-square foot commercial kitchen. This dining option offers patrons lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday regardless of whether or not there is a show.
BALLET LUBBOCK // The venue is also host to a 22,000-square foot dancer center for a local company, Ballet Lubbock Pre-Professional Academy. Make sure to check out the annual performance of The Nutcracker in December.
GUITAR PICKS // The iconic image of Buddy Holly’s fender guitar is composed of nearly 9,000 picks arranged using 11 different sizes. This tribute to Buddy Holly is 30-foot by 120-foot and serves as one of The Hall’s many fine-art pieces.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CRAFT. // Being a winemaker is being able to transform agriculture and chemistry into art. Turning what nature has given us into a beverage while retaining the impact of the terroir is no easy feat; an exceptional product begins in the field and ends with a bottle at your table. A sommelier is a wordsmith, translating taste and smell into language so that everyone can understand. My job is to create a sense of comfort in a world that is often aloof. Making wine relatable to your everyday, makes every day special. WHAT’S AN UNKNOWN ABOUT YOUR WORK? // The amount of thought that goes into every aspect of the winemaking process. From yeast type, to when to press the juice, to the bottle type and the longevity of the cork used in the closure, we weigh every option to make sure our products are the best representation of the fruit and of our region. We strive to make wines of excellence, so naturally we obsess over even the smallest detail.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION? // I draw my inspiration from not only my history as a ballet dancer but from contemporary movements of the body through dance. I want to give my viewer a unique experience of the ‘performance’ forever preserved through abstraction on a canvas. The gestural changes of the body in a performance space inspires the color choice and layering of material. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CRAFT. // My work happens entirely on the floor of my studio. I treat my canvas or my surface much like a ‘stage’ in a sense where I become the roles of painter and dancer all at the same time. I often use my hands and my feet to accomplish some of the mark-making that a brush causes to be more limited. I use a multitude of materials such as acrylic, house paint, chalk pastel and powdered charcoal to achieve layers of space and form through abstracting of movement.

WHY CHOOSE LUBBOCK AS YOUR PLACE TO PLANT YOUR BUSINESSES’ ROOTS? // Back home in Puerto Rico, we have a lot of cultural influence from Spain, Africa, Caribbean, places that are not as highly represented in Lubbock. The necessity of the people to have something from a different culture is what drives my business. HOW IS IT BEING A LUBBOCK BUSINESS OWNER IN THE CURRENT CLIMATE? // The support of the local people has kept me going. In big cities, you don’t get that type of close-knit community support like you do in Lubbock. Without that, we wouldn’t be here. HOW DO VISITORS TO LUBBOCK IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS? // At the farmer’s market we see a lot of visitors. When they come, they’re surprised to find a place like ours in Lubbock that reminds them of something they see back home. Even though they may think Lubbock is just some small town in West Texas, we’re able to show them what Lubbock is becoming. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS? // Right now, open. Secondly, brand awareness and expanding into local restaurants. Down the road, a larger brewhouse. It’s all about the people and building the community. 65
