Fo rewo rd Maastricht
WELCOME Welcome to the beautiful city of MAASTRICHT, the city of good taste. You’ve probably just arrived and are eager to discover the city. Perhaps you’ve visited before and you can’t wait to visit familiar places again but be sure to take inspiration from this CITY GUIDE too, which will lead you to delightful ‘new’ locations in the city. This is your CITY GUIDE; a handy guidebook offering endless inspiration. It contains maps per district, tips for culinary connoisseurs, the mayor’s favourite spots, and what to do when it rains... For me, Maastricht is the city of good taste. It’s an international city that impresses in every way. It has the courage to reinvent itself without imitating other cities, and that makes working in and for this city such a wonderful challenge. At Maastricht Marketing, we work tirelessly with passion and affection for this fantastic city every day. And we do it all to inspire and help you, as a visitor to Maastricht, to get the most out of your visit. Why not stay in Maastricht a bit longer and go beyond the city boundaries to explore the rest of South Limburg and the Euroregion? This border region is beautiful with its rolling landscape dotted with quaint villages and unique cities. Everywhere you go you’ll be surprised by a new dialect or language or delicious regional speciality. All year round, Maastricht offers a broad spectrum of cultural happenings in addition to the many gems the city has to offer. TEFAF, the Preuvenemint, and Magical Maastricht are particularly well-known highlights, Maastricht is a meeting point for students, tourists, expats, art lovers, and connoisseurs of the good life. It offers a monumental décor, innovative developments, and an international character. Take a leisurely stroll through the streets with their almost French character and be charmed by all the delights that Maastricht and its inhabitants have to offer. After all, it is the locals who can show you what makes Maastricht the ‘Good-Life Capital of Europe’! Leontien Mees Director Maastricht Marketing Welcome in Maastricht!

MAASTRICHT
WELCOME! WE’RE HAPPY TO HAVE YOU... Did you forget for a moment that you were still in the NETHERLANDS? Don’t worry, you’re not the first person to think that, as this place feels so different from the rest of the Netherlands. But you’re really here, in the historic city of Maastricht, right at the very edge of the Dutch border. This is the place where Northern Europe and Southern Europe meet. The place where the three countries which make up the Euroregion come together. YOU CAN FEEL IT, SEE IT, TASTE IT, AND SMELL IT. You can feel it!
THE MOST EUROPEAN CITY OF THE NETHERLANDS
Maastricht offers the very best of the north and south and of the past and present. It is a city of local charm and international allure. Once it was the place where Germanic and Roman cultures collided; today it is the current mix of cultures, languages, and flavours that makes the city burst with creativity. Historic buildings and trendy design shops, majestic churches and thrilling cave adventures, inspired menus and inviting café terraces, lively festivals and sensational expositions, stately squares and vast vineyards. All this and more
makes Maastricht a favourite destination for a day of shopping, a weekend away for two, or an elegant European holiday.
INTERNATIONAL ALLURE ON A SMALL SCALE
While Maastricht is certainly not one of the world’s big metropolises, it is easy to navigate, compact, and cosy. The highlights are all within walking distance, and it’s hard to lose your way on the charming, mostly car-free, streets. You will feel right at home in Maastricht. Everywhere you go, you can expect to receive an open-armed Maastricht welcome. The hotels, restaurants, and cafés exude warmth and 5
cosiness. But its small-scale doesn’t mean that you can see and do it all in just a few hours; for a small city, there is plenty to experience in Maastricht. And, what’s more, here we don’t believe in living life in the fast lane. We like to take our time and enjoy things, whether it’s shopping, strolling, going out for drinks, or having a lavish meal. That’s the Maastricht way of doing things. So, why not spend the night? And then ask yourself: although Maastricht is not a metropolis, it is the very heart of the Euroregion and has plenty of international allure, while it is also home to an international university with students from more than 100 countries.
THE ‘MESTREECHTER GEIS & TAOL’ Did you know that...
Maastricht has an important military past as a garrison city as illustrated by the city wall in the city park? Here, where little children now come to feed the ducks and deer, once stood fearsome enemies. The army would fire cannons from the embrasures in the thick wall. As you walk along the city wall, it’s not hard to imagine the scenes of battle that once raged here.
Did you know that…
The Markt square in Maastricht hosts a large weekly market on Wednesdays and Fridays? The goods market is there on Wednesday, and on Friday the market expands with fresh fish, artisanal regional products, and the famous textiles market. You can find everything you need! Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Charm, playfulness, a healthy dose of humour, and a zest for life: these are the ingredients of the Maastricht local character, or in the local dialect: the Mestreechter Geis. Maastricht also has its own particular dialect, the Mestreechter Taol (the language of Maastricht), which has a sing-song intonation and is known for its soft pronunciations. This is just a taste of the wealth of culture that will greet you here in Maastricht. If you’d like to learn some of the local dialect during your stay, you’re in luck! The locals are always happy to meet curious visitors who want to learn something about Maastricht. For example, if you feel like a cup of coffee, you can ask for a teske koffie, and as the locals do, light a bougie (candle) at the Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of Our Lady).
ONE OF THE OLDEST CITIES
Maastricht and Nijmegen will probably continue to debate which of the two is the Netherlands’ oldest city for centuries to come, but whatever the answer, did you know that Maastricht is home to more historic buildings than any city in the Netherlands save one? 6
All over the city, you can still find the traces that go back to Maastricht the Roman settlement, religious centre, garrison city, and the birthplace of the industrial revolution in the Netherlands.
FROM ROMAN SETTLEMENT TO EUROPEAN MELTING POT
Roman settlement ‘Maastricht’ comes from the Latin Mosae Trajectum, meaning ‘crossing over the Meuse’, which refers to the first bridge over the river that the Romans built here around the first century AD. Religious centre (380) In this year, St Servatius, Bishop of Tongeren, moves the bishop’s see to Maastricht. Joint sovereignty (1204) Maastricht is granted medieval city rights, and over the course of the Middle Ages falls under the dominion of the Duke of Brabant and the Prince-Bishop of Liège. Garrison city (1579) The Spanish army, led by Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, conquers Maastricht. Republic (1632) Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik brings Maastricht into the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. French conquest (1673) The French Sun King, Louis XIV, captures Maastricht. During the attack on the city walls, the famous
musketeer d’Artagnan is killed. Dutch control (1678) Control of Maastricht is back in Dutch hands. French Republic (1794) Maastricht becomes part of the French Republic. The French abolish joint sovereignty and make all residents French subjects. United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1814) Maastricht again comes under Dutch rule. General Dibbets succeeds in keeping Maastricht in Dutch hands during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Early industrial city (1830) Petrus Regout, a glass and pottery manufacturer in Maastricht, ushers in the age of industrialization in the Netherlands with his purchase of the country’s first steam engine. This era in modern history transformed Maastricht into the creative and vibrant city it is today. University city (1976) The State University of Limburg is established in Maastricht with the goal of breathing new life into the economy of Limburg after the closure of the mines. EUROREGION (1991) The cooperative platform established by the Dutch, German, and Belgian provinces in 1976 acquires legal status in 1991 as the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. The cooperation relates primarily

Treaty of Maastricht (1992) Representatives of twelve European countries sign the Treaty of Maastricht, paving the way for the introduction of the euro. HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Whether sipping on cocktails in the trendy sky bar of the industrial Eiffel building, soaking up the sun on one of the café terraces on Plein 1992 square in the architectural district Céramique, or lighting a candle in the chapel of Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of Our Lady), wherever you go in Maastricht, the city is alive with history which reveals itself in everything around you. Did you know that the entire city centre of Maastricht has been declared a protected national monument? In the historic buildings and elegant houses, you will find a rich variety of architectural styles from different ages – from the early Roman period 7
Did you know that…
THE EUROREGION IS AN AREA THAT INCLUDES PARTS OF THE NETHERLANDS, GERMANY, AND BELGIUM? THIS REGION CONSISTS OF 4 MILLION PEOPLE WHO SPEAK 4 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES SPREAD ACROSS 3 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.
Fact...
While modern Maastricht might not have retained much of its industrial character at first glance, the city has preserved many remarkable elements of its influential industrial past. It is this stark contrast between the authentic medieval city centre and the now modern and transformed former factory districts such as Céramique and the Sphinx quarter that lends the city a lively and exciting dynamic.
to the Maastricht Renaissance. Experience the seamless transition from stately, old façades to contemporary architecture and the historic buildings of the future.
ECCLESIASTICAL RUINS, CHURCHES & TREASURES
Whether you are religious or not, you’ll be overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the many old monasteries, chapels, and impressive churches located on the charming squares in the city centre of Maastricht. These monumental structures have, and always have had, a special appeal to both young and old. It started long ago with the many pilgrims that would visit the city to see the grave of St Servatius. Maastricht keeps its greatest relics in the treasury of the Basilica of St Servatius: the chest reliquary (Noodkist), the goblet, and the bust of St Servatius. The collection includes precious metals, ivory, silks, paintings, and statues. The treasury of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, part of the eleventh century transept basilica of the same name, is no less magnificent. It contains religious art and articles including richly embroidered liturgical garments, relics, processional banners, liturgical silver, and statues. The Gothic
St. Janskerk (St John’s church) is also part of the city’s rich religious heritage. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. It has a very special pulpit, beautiful gravestones and wall paintings, and the monumental Binvignat organ. Tip: climb up the tower of St John’s Church for a great view of the city. Be sure to also visit lesser-known Minderbroederskerk (Friars Minor church).
A NEW PURPOSE
In recent years, thanks to creative enterprise, many monasteries and churches have been repurposed to save them from destruction. The fifteenth-century Kruisherenklooster (Monastery of the Crosiers) and monumental church are a perfect example of this. The entire complex was transformed into a luxurious five-star designer hotel while preserving its history. The thirteenth-century former Dominican church and monastery have also been repurposed. After extensive restoration work, it now houses a bookshop. Maastricht’s efforts to cherish its historical treasures can also be seen in the Sphinxkwartier and the 8
adjoining Frontenpark, which is a new and rugged part of the city. This is a raw and dynamic area undergoing rapid development, which serves as a reminder of the rich industrial past and a time of unremitting labour, production, and trade. These days, the vibe in and around the Sphinxpassage, the Sphinxcour, and the nationally listed Eiffel building is vibrant with hotspots such as The Student Hotel, Loods 5, the Muziekgieterij, and Lumiere Cinema.
A CONTINUUM OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
Go on a journey into the past. A moment of nostalgia can sometimes be a good thing. It makes you stop to think about the good old times and recall the fond memories that have brought you to where you are today. As you stroll through Maastricht, you might just happen upon a traditional craftsman with a trade that, where needed, has been adjusted as time went by. Or you might discover a traditional artisanal baker with a working water mill, a small museum, or traditional brewery. If you’re lucky, they might just be open, and you can take a look inside as they go about their trade.
IT ALL HAPPENS ON VRIJTHOF SQUARE
It has been called the most beautiful square in the country, Vrijthof Square. But you’ll discover this yourself as you stroll across the square or sit down at one of the many adjoining café terraces. This is where you can visit the treasury of the Basilica of Saint Servatius, enjoy a night out to watch a theatre production, or admire the view of the city from the top of the St John’s church. It all happens on and around Vrijthof square. But this famous square is more than that. It is also the place that undergoes a metamorphosis almost weekly, smoothly transitioning from each cultural season and event to the next, and the place where the patchwork collection of colours and sounds of Carnival come together, home to the beautiful backdrop for the concerts of local favourite André Rieu, and the merry and bright setting for Magical Maastricht in December.
HEAVEN FOR FASHIONISTAS AND SHOPAHOLICS Maastricht is a city that loves fashion. It might not be one of the fashion capitals of the world like Paris and Milan,
but the city has been making its mark in the world of fashion the last few years. The Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design (MAFAD) has attracted young fashion designers with their own studios and labels. The annual FASHIONCLASH Festival is an international and interdisciplinary fashion event that never fails to excite the city and the many visitors that come here every year. Maastricht is also home to big brand names, exclusive labels, small boutiques, and unique speciality shops with must-have fashion and accessories, lifestyle accessories, and design. The heart of the city is rightly legendary among fashion-lovers and shopaholics, who can shop to their hearts’ content here, seven days a week. Enjoying all the good things in life, appreciating good food, and always being in awe of the rolling hills comes naturally in Maastricht. This welcoming city is filled with good spirit. That slow lifestyle, for which Southern Europe is famous, is all the more evident in Maastricht than anywhere else in the country. It’s in our genes and it’s in our soil. The unique loess that is found only in South Limburg is the literal and figurative foundation for our rich and high-quality gastronomy. This quality is also the result of the time we take to nurture the products we grow on it. Time makes everything just a little bit better and tastier too. After all, producing good quality and tasty ingredients takes time and this is also

And then you also need to take the time to sit around the table together and enjoy these lovingly prepared products. After all, enjoyable moments should be shared with others. This feeling of warmth and hospitality is something that we cherish in Maastricht. We love to share the flavours, scents, and colours of our city. The people of Maastricht will always try to welcome their guests in their own language. They will tell the stories of the passion and craftsmanship with which our local products are made with great pride and tell you about the special places of origin, just around the corner. A DIFFERENT CUISINE EVERY DAY
From the flavours of the Mediterranean and traditional Asian dishes to local delicacies; from a culinary point of view, there’s plenty to do in Maastricht. Just as the variety 10
of cuisines is extensive, so are the types of places that serve them, ranging from Michelin-star restaurants and stylish wine bars to trendy coffee spots and traditional Maastricht pubs (bruin café). If you have something to celebrate and are looking for something truly unique, the wealth of castles, country estates, vaulted cellars, warehouses, and churches in the city make for a perfect location for any event. The countless restaurants, many of which are united in Maastricht Culinair or Les Tables, offer hospitality and quality for every budget. So, what’s on the menu today?
THE TASTE OF MAASTRICHT
While you’re here, broaden your horizons and try one of the typical Maastricht dishes such as Zoervleis (meat stew), Huidvleis (brawn), or the local Rommedoe cheese with its powerful aroma and flavour, finished off by a delicious piece of traditional Limburg vlaai (sweet tart).
MAASTRICHT WINE
Maastricht is the place to taste, buy, drink, and celebrate wine. Whether you are a connoisseur or simply enjoy a glass of wine with friends, in Maastricht you’ll find the very
best of both worlds. Several varieties of wine grapes do well on the sun-drenched slopes of the Jeker Valley. Every year, Maastricht winegrowers produce delicious and award-winning wines. Like De Apostelhoeve wine estate, which produces six lovely white wines as well as two sparkling wines. The Jeker valley also houses the second oldest vineyard in the Netherlands, Hoeve Nekum. They even make wines worthy of royalty – at the wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, one of the wines was a Riesling from Hoeve Nekum. For the best wines, have a look inside the Netherlands’ oldest wine shop in the city centre, Thiessen Wijnkoopers, which also produces wines from its own urban vineyard!
You can smell it!
HOW DOES THE GOOD LIFE SMELL?
We have captured the scent of la dolce vita! When you are known as the city of the good life with a diversity of flavours set against a beautiful backdrop, if you are the city that entices all the senses, then it is only natural that you should have your very own fragrance too. In 2019, we launched our own perfume named Ton sur
Ton Maastricht. Ton sur Ton is an exclusive, handmade, unisex eau de parfum that tells the story of Maastricht. This story cannot be told with one scent alone, which is why Ton sur Ton consists of five storylines, translated into five fragrance notes. Each note represents its own storyline, and this is something that you’ll become aware of when you smell Ton sur Ton. The perfume gradually changes as soon as it comes into contact with the skin. You are taken on a fragrance journey through the city; through its past and present. From an accent of spices that refers to the traditional delicacies from Maastricht cuisine to lime blossom extract with a fresh and honey-sweet character. You then become aware of a hint of exotic soft fruit which refers to the fertile soil of the city and next of suede as a symbol for the craftsmanship and work of the historic tanner’s guild that once created their products here. Finally you come to the wood tones, to musk, and ambergris which represent a sense of sensuality, togetherness, and relaxation. Together these scents symbolize the good life in Maastricht. Ton sur Ton Maastricht is for sale at the Maastricht Visitor Center. 11

TAKING A WALK WITH MAYOR ANNEMARIE PENN-TE STRAKE The Mayor of Maastricht Annemarie Penn-te Strake regularly goes to work on foot. It’s a lovely walk from the Jeker quarter to the Markt square, and she never tires of it – it always helps her CLEAR HER HEAD! She enjoys watching the city gently awaken and start its day as she leaves her home in the morning, and revels in the bustle and buzz later in the day as she returns. ‘Maastricht is the place to be for the ideal WORK-LIFE BALANCE.’ ‘As you approach the south of the Netherlands, a sense of calm comes over you. Your breathing and heart rate slow as stress and haste make way for relaxation. Walking becomes strolling, and your senses awaken – there is so much to see, smell, and taste! You want to take the time to experience and enjoy them. That was my experience years ago when I first came to Maastricht, long before I became mayor. You get a sense that it is a privilege to live and work here. Visitors to the city often describe it as feeling very un-
Dutch. And it still does to me. ‘Maastricht has the air of a city that enjoys a challenge, and has the dynamism and inspiration to make a success of things. At the same time, it has a very human scale so you don’t get overwhelmed by stimuli as is sometimes the case in a bigger city. And then there’s that constant weekend feeling – giving you the space and opportunity to switch off and take the time to open your eyes to what is happening around you. ‘Taking the time like this ensures that we do things

attentively and with an eye for quality. At the same time, the city is constantly innovating and developing, partly thanks to a university that is highly regarded internationally. Maastricht is a hub of urban development at the heart of Europe. And then there’s the cultural sphere... I recently heard that Maastricht is the Netherlands’ second city in terms of the culture on offer, and that’s without even starting to think about the wonderful array of shops, cafés, restaurants, and bars. ‘In Maastricht, we also take the time for each other and for our guests, not just at the dining table but also in the shops, stopping for a chat in the park... everywhere in fact. The people of Maastricht are very pleasant to be around, both the older Maastrichtenaren whose families have been here for generations and the young students. They are sociable, open, helpful, and fun-loving. Enjoyable moments should be shared with others. ‘It’s hard to think of just a few tips for a visit to Maastricht. Just do as the locals do. Slow down, take a stroll, and look up and around you. Follow
your nose, especially if it lures you into a cosy pub or onto a bustling café terrace. Enjoy everything together. And above all, take your time.’
THE PERFECT DAY OFF…
‘Enjoying a lunch of onion soup at a traditional pub. Strolling through the narrow cobbled streets and the park, admiring buildings and monuments both historic and modern, and ending the day with a drink at a friendly pub. In the evenings, I enjoy going to music performances at the theatre or in a cosy church.’

‘My “home district” in Maastricht. The statue “Levensvreugd” (zest for life) on Grote Looiersgracht – depicting a woman with four children – was the decisive factor in me choosing to settle here with my four children. It’s wonderful to live in a part of the city that exudes so much history.’

SERENITY & SPACE
What makes Maastricht truly unique is that this vibrant city also has places where you can find space and serenity. This is part of the perfect balance
that makes life in Maastricht so great. The Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of Our Lady) and the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square are oases of calm. Hundreds of visitors and locals come here every day to light a candle, some because of their religious beliefs and others simply for a moment of everyday happiness. Maastricht also lies in the middle of beautiful countryside and has various green spaces within walking distance of the city. In the city itself is the beautiful Stadspark city park with the Jeker river burbling away cheerfully in the background, various animals, and the ancient city wall and cannons as the backdrop. On the nearby Sint Pietersberg hill, you can find tranquillity in the forests, vineyards, and on the tracks while also paying a visit to the fascinating ENCI quarry. Why live an idyllic life in France if you could just as easily do it right here in Maastricht?
GO ING O FFL INE Maastricht
HOW SLOW CAN YOU GO? You’ve probably heard of the idea of a digital detox. After such a city trip, you’re ready to get back to business again. You really don’t have to spend your days in a hut on a deserted heath without social contact. You can do it in Maastricht!

THE DISTRICTS Maastricht is a city where old and new come together, with famous as well as many hidden places. The centre of MAASTRICHT is nice and compact. But each of the districts here have a unique character. Here is our list of the districts of Maastricht and all the HIGHLIGHTS per district. Discover which district is your favourite!
WYCK/CÉRAMIQUE
Wyck is located between the station and the Meuse. Exclusive shops, hip hotels, and trendy restaurants and bars are perfectly combined with traditional speciality shops and small delicatessen. Wyck is vibrant. Leave the small, quaint streets of Wyck behind and explore Céramique, the district with architectural highlights including the impressive building designed by Aldo Rossi: the Bonnefanten. The past and present come together beautifully in Céramique.
CITY CENTRE
The lively shopping area of the city, located between the St Servatius bridge, Markt square, and Vrijthof square. Whether you’re looking for luxury department stores, famous chain stores, or small
boutiques, you’re bound to find whatever you’re looking for in the city centre of Maastricht. Be sure to visit the Mosae Forum and Entre Deux shopping centres and the special book shop in the Dominican church!
JEKER QUARTER/ STOKSTRAAT QUARTER
Catch your breath after the hustle and bustle of the city centre in the tranquillity of the Jeker quarter. This district is also called the Quartier Latin of Maastricht, with its picturesque streets and small quaint shops, galleries, and large variety of restaurants and cafés. The Stokstraat quarter is nestled between the city centre and the Jeker quarter. The streets are narrow, the pubs are small, the boutiques stylish and elegant.
SPHINX QUARTER
The industrial revolution in Maastricht started in the Sphinx quarter. This district continues to change and develop and is especially attractive to creative spirits, young residents and visitors, students, and expats. The historic inner harbour, ‘t Bassin, with its cosy restaurants and galleries represents a bridge between the old and familiar parts of Maastricht and this new part of the city.
SINT PIETER & SURROUNDS
One of the unique things about Maastricht as a city is that you can go from the city centre to the rolling hills of the countryside in no time. If you didn’t know better, you’d think you’ve left the Netherlands behind.

Dinghuis
A MEDIEVAL COURTHOUSE
With its rich history, this is the place where your visit to Maastricht begins. The Maastricht Visitor Center is located in the Dinghuis, a building in the heart of Maastricht dating from 1470 and with a long history. The name comes from the Dutch ‘dingen’, which means ‘to administer judgement’. The basement of the Dinghuis was used as a torture chamber and the attic as a prison. The windows are decorated with three symbolic coats of arms: those of the Duke of Brabant, the PrinceBishopric of Liège, and the City of Maastricht. The Dinghuis was viewed by the people of Maastricht as the city hall. Since 1985, the Dinghuis has been the place to go with all your questions about your visit to Maastricht, and for inspiration. venu es Maastricht
Venues that tell a story
Treat your quests to tasty morsels created by a Michelin-starred chef, while they dance to the beats of a DJ within the confines of a former church. After a busy day of meeting or team building activities, sit and relax at the elegantly laid tables in the atmospheric caves. Or watch the city go by on a drinks cruise along the Meuse. Want to give your family, friends, colleagues, or business partners a never-before-had experience? Let us help you put together your own programme and choose from one or our unique venues.
