crawl. “I bleed black and orange,” says Bill. So, it makes sense that he serves as the VP, brand ambassador, evangelist, and chief cheerleader for the world’s only Harley-Davidson Museum, which recently celebrated its 10th birthday. We spoke to the man whose family name appears on your favorite motorcycles to get his thoughts on a few of the highlights you’ll encounter as you view the planet’s most expansive collection of HarleyDavidson motorcycles and memorabilia, found at the crossroads of 6th and Canal in Milwaukee, WI, U.S.A. I’m often asked what I love most about the collection, and I often tell people that it depends on the day. There are so many iconic motorcycles found throughout the Museum and within the Motorcycle Archives. But it’s the stories and the people that are found within those hundreds of thousands of artifacts that really draw me in. I really wish those motorcycles could talk. Our four founders had incredible insight and forethought to keep shining examples of the ingenuity and engineering that can be found throughout our uninterrupted run of 115 years of fulfilling dreams of personal freedom. It’s a collection that rivals anything you’ll find in any other corporate archives. The Museum not only

every inch of our 20-acre campus. We have something that really is incredible on 6th & Canal: 115 years of history of a brand that has changed people’s lives in so many remarkable ways. And my team and I invite everyone to experience it – riders and non-riders alike!
Serial No. 1, c. 1903
It’s the oldest known Harley-Davidson in existence, how could I not include this in my list? It’s a revered icon (as the glass case lets you know), and I’ve seen people with tears streaming down their face when they first encounter 12 | HARLEY-DAVIDSON BIKERS GUIDE 2018

This display was actually created for the Motor Company’s 100th Anniversary and shines the spotlight on 100 tanks from our history. I think it shows o our core competencies of utilizing unique color schemes and amazing graphics to create stunning visuals. While all the tanks share a common shape, it’s a stunning visual that reflects the times in which they were created and illustrates how personal a Harley-Davidson can be. It’s also a popular spot for selfies, with the H-D logos providing a pristine backdrop that lets everyone know you’re in HOG Heaven.

What draws me into this gallery are the ear-to-ear smiles that I see on everyone who throws a leg over one of these display bikes. Whether it’s a classic motorcycle from the back in the day or a brand-new bike that just rolled o the factory floor, nobody can resist the chance to see what life behind handlebars looks like.

Milwaukee is known for throwing a hell of a
party (obviously). In addition to anniversary celebrations, Milwaukee is home to a full calendar of music and cultural festivals, street parties, and more. Most of the heavyhitters take place at the city’s permanent lakefront festival grounds, including Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival, and Irish Fest, the largest Celtic celebration.

Estabrook Beer Garden
Beer Gardens Beer gardens are all about gemütlichkeit, the spirit of good cheer and conviviality, and this German tradition is back in a big way in Milwaukee! The warm, community atmosphere of a beer garden makes it a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. Estabrook Park Beer Garden (4600 Estabrook Pkwy.) was the first public beer garden in the country since Prohibition, and now there are beer gardens popping up throughout local parks. Sprecher Brewing teamed up with
the Milwaukee County Parks to create a traveling beer garden that moves to a different park every few weeks, bringing fun (and beer) wherever they go - you’ll find it this weekend in Juneau Park (900 N. Prospect Ave.). From 8/29-9/2, HarleyDavidson 115th rally pack wristband holders will receive a free souvenir glass with the purchase of a beverage at South Shore Terrace (2900 S. hen in Milwaukee…eat like a Milwaukeean! While Milwaukee’s dining scene has grown to include nationally-recognized chefs and first-class fine dining, we still love the classics that show off our German roots and Dairy State pride. Make sure you try one (or more) of these Milwaukee favorites while you’re in town for a seriously delicious local experience.

he knows a thing or two about the freedom of the open road. His work captures the unbridled spirit of bikers of all types, and his motorcycle photographs have been seen in art galleries, coffee table books, and magazines worldwide. You may have seen his photos featured in 100 Years of Harley-Davidson by Willie G. Davidson - they were requested by the man himself. Experience Michael Lichter’s photography in person at a free gallery show at The Iron Horse Hotel (500 W. Florida St.) August 29 through September 7. The lively Marquette University campus and diverse residential streets now make up the heart of this neighborhood, which was the historic home of Milwaukee’s elite. Marquette’s Haggerty Museum of Art (530 N. 13th St.) is free to all and features intriguing, rotating exhibitions. Dine at student favorites like the campus location of popular burger joint Sobelman’s (1601 W. Wells St.) and the famous Real Chili (1625 W. Wells St.), or venture off campus for chicken and waffles and a delicious soul food buffet at Daddy’s Soul Food & Grille (754 N. 27th St.). Inside the Art Deco-styled Ambassador Hotel (2308 W. Wisconsin Ave.), The Fitz serves creative cuisine with a taste of yesteryear. Pre-Prohibition-inspired cocktails are on offer in the hotel’s stylish lounge, Gin Rickey. Get another taste of the past at the Five O’Clock Steakhouse (2416 W. State St.), a classic Milwaukee supper club with a Mad Men vibe. One of the only remaining relics of the neighborhood’s grand past is the Pabst Mansion (2000 W. Wisconsin Ave.), the historic family home of Captain Frederick Pabst. (Yes, that Pabst.) Don’t miss the opportunity to see the Gilded Age splendor Milwaukee’s beer barons enjoyed on a guided tour of the lovingly restored mansion.

BAY VIEW This hip, eclectic neighborhood is popular with families and young professionals alike. Home to one of the city’s most popular bar districts, it’s also a hotbed of local art and creativity. You’ll see it as you stroll past stores stocked with the work of local artisans and historic buildings decorated with murals. Stop at Humboldt Park (3000 S. Howell Ave.) for a summertime visit to Milwaukee’s Craft Beer Garden or to enjoy the popular Tuesday night concert series, Chill on the Hill. The South Shore Terrace (2900 S. Shore Dr.) beer garden in South Shore Park looks out over Lake Michigan, providing a one-of-a-kind view of downtown. Check out the vibrant dining scene including communal, Midwest-inspired dishes at Kindred on KK (2535 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.), creative burgers at Crafty Cow (2675 S.

BREWERS HILL Located on a bluff overlooking the Milwaukee River, this area boomed at the turn of the 20th century as a residential area for the laborers who worked in the foundries, tanneries, mills, and breweries that lined the river. Today, you can still find a brewery on the river: Lakefront Brewery (1872 N. Commerce St.), home to one of the city’s most popular tours and an ever-growing tap list of innovative beers. The “Marsupial Bridge” that connects Brewers Hill to the East Side is a popular thoroughfare for pedestrians and cyclists - and always a popular photo opp!

Pilcrow Coffee
The historic economic and social heart of Milwaukee’s African-American community, this neighborhood is now the center of major redevelopment efforts. Taste the flavor of the neighborhood on the main thoroughfare, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. New Orleansinspired On The Bayou (2053 N. Dr. MLK, Jr. Dr.) offers Cajun and Creole-inspired dishes that bring the flavor of the Big Easy to Milwaukee. At The Juice Kitchen (1617 W. North Ave.), they believe that fresh juices (always raw and vegan) are good for the body and for the soul. Pilcrow Coffee (1739 N. Dr. MLK, Jr. Dr.) may look like your average unassuming neighborhood cafe, but this farm-to-cup coffee shop and roastery took home first place at America’s Best Cold Brew Competition 2017. After ten years as a digital museum, America’s Black Holocaust Museum (411 W. North Ave.) returned to the neighborhood this summer, featuring exhibits detailing little-known parts of African American history, interactive displays, traveling exhibits, and more. Need a quick trim? Gee’s Clippers (2200 N. Dr. MLK, Jr. Dr.) is a popular choice for both neighborhood residents and traveling athletes.

CLARKE SQUARE This diverse neighborhood is a gateway to Milwaukee’s predominantly Hispanic south side. Visit Super Mercado El Rey (916 S. Cesar Chavez Dr.) to peruse the ingredients to prepare almost any Hispanic cuisine and grab lunch at in-store café Taco Loco, or stop by El Cañaveral (2501 W. Greenfield Ave.), a colorful neighborhood favorite serving authentic Mexican cuisine. Each year city streets are closed to motor traffic for Ciclovia MKE (cicloviamke.org), an open streets event that invites runners, walkers, and cyclists to take to the streets to explore this historic community. And be sure to stop by one of the city’s most beloved treasures, the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (524 S. Layton Ave.). Known to locals simply as “The Domes,” these three beehive-shaped domes contain a desert, a rainforest, and a changing show display.
EAST TOWN

East of the Milwaukee River, you’ll find some of the city’s most popular attractions…and a little something we like to call Lake Michigan. The lakefront is a hub of activity all year long. Stroll or jog along its many paths and trails, take a pleasure cruise out into the harbor, or fly a kite purchased from Gift of Wings (1300 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr.). Visit the stunning Milwaukee Art Museum (700 N. Art Museum Dr.), bring the kids to learn about science and innovation at Discovery World (500 N. Harbor Dr.), and stop by Betty Brinn Children’s Museum (929 E. Wisconsin Ave.), the city’s only museum designed specifically for children under 10. You’ll also find Cathedral Square Park (520 E. Wells St.), home to popular farmers markets and the Jazz in the Park concert series held on Thursday nights in the summer.

A popular destination for a night out, this trendy neighborhood is a melting pot of UW-Milwaukee students, young professionals, and longtime residents. Brady Street, the historic center of Milwaukee’s Italian population, is now one of the city’s modern nightlife hubs. You’ll still find Italian classics at Glorioso’s Italian Deli (1011 E. Brady St.) and Peter Sciortino’s Bakery (1101 E. Brady St.) alongside offbeat coffee shop Rochambo Coffee and Teahouse (1317 E. Brady St.), intimate date night spot Balzac Wine Bar (1716 N. Farwell Ave.), where James Beard semifinalist Justin Carlisle creates innovative New American cuisine inspired by Wisconsin ingredients. For an artsy night out, see a movie at one of the nation’s premier historic movie palaces, the Oriental Theater (2230 N. Farwell Ave.), or catch some live music at The Jazz Estate (2423 N. HARBOR DISTRICT It was water that first brought people to the land that would become Milwaukee. A lush rice marsh gave way to a bustling port, and today the city is working to revitalize Milwaukee’s harbor. UW-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences (600 E. Greenfield Ave.), the first program of its kind in the nation, recently opened a brand new facility right on the water. You can get an up-close and personal look at the work that happens in the Harbor District today with a tour of the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility (700 E. Jones St.). This year, construction will start on a new waterfront park with a play structure, canoe launch, and more. But this area isn’t all science! Check out popular nightlife spots, including craft cocktail bar Boone & Crockett (818 S. Water St.) and internationally-inspired tapas at La Merenda (125 E. National Ave.).
HISTORIC THIRD WARD *
Trendy shops and dining abound in this revitalized warehouse district. The neighborhood is anchored on the north end by the Milwaukee Public Market (400 N. Water St.), where you’ll find 20 local vendors selling prepared food, groceries, gifts, and more. On the south end, you’ll find the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (273 E. Erie St.) – it’s no surprise that this is an artsy part of town. On Gallery Night & Day (historicthirdward.org/events/gallerynight), the galleries and boutiques that dot the neighborhood open their doors for a community-wide celebration of art, while the Broadway Theatre Center (158 N. Broadway) is home to several performing arts groups and a stunning jewel box theater. Get your shopping done at specialty retailers like Lela Boutique (321 N. This diverse, offbeat neighborhood has a DIY sensibility that runs deep. According to neon signs, the motorcycle-inspired Fuel Café (818 E. On Old World Third Street, explore the roots of Milwaukee’s German history at classic establishments like Usinger’s Sausage (1030 N. Old World 3rd St.), the Old German Beer Hall (1009 N. Old World 3rd St.), and Mader’s Restaurant (1041 N. Old World 3rd St.). Or head out for a drink before a show or game – this street is just a block away from Turner Hall Ballroom (1040 N. 4th St.), a popular music venue, as well as the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena (400 W. Kilbourn Ave.) and the new Milwaukee Bucks arena opening in the summer of 2018. You can even travel around the world, back in time, and to the depths of the ocean at the Milwaukee Public Museum (800 W. Wells St.) or explore local history at the Milwaukee County Historical Society (910 N. Old World 3rd St.). Make sure to check out Brew City MKE (275 W. Wisconsin Ave.) for a taste of Milwaukee’s beer history and a cold one to wash Mader’s it down.
