Practical information

SOME PRACTICALITIES CURRENCY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes (EVE) Located about 57 km from Narvik town centre and 50 minutes by car.

DOMESTIC AIRPORT: Bardufoss Airport (BDU)

The currency is Norwegian krone (NOK). Norway is a mainly cashless country and all major credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Exchanging foreign currency for local cash may be challenging, but you will find ATM machines in many places. It’s a good idea to have some Norwegian money when you arrive in the country.

WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR LUGGAGE IN WINTER

HOW IS THE WEATHER? North Norwegians love to talk about the weather. But, despite the location well above the Arctic Circle, The Narvik Region will not leave your bones frozen 24/7. The warm waters of the Gulfstream provide quite some respite for the Ofot Fjord, including Narvik, and keep the ports ice free all year, and may surprise you with summer temperatures of up to 30°C. From

4

late May until late July the sun does not set, leaving the clouds to decide whether you will experience the midnight sun or just a bright night. In mid-November the sun disappears until late January. Winter temperatures are usually somewhere between +5°C to –15°C, though some days can be much colder - especially when you travel further inland.

I feel lucky to breathe in the fresh air of this arctic climate every day, and humble and grateful for my job of developing the Narvik region as a sustainable destination. As the mother of 2 kids, I consider it my role to show them the beauty of the world beyond phones and computers. We go out to the mountains all year round. It’s beautiful to give our children the time and space to learn the way of nature, and its value. That it needs to be respected. Sometimes silently so to appreciate the sounds and emotions of the region. The ice has a sound. The cold winter night is silent, but still overwhelming with beauty. We follow the seasons, and are grateful every time the birds come back for summer. A faster and much more lively sound. The rhythm slows down in winter, but speeds up again with the midnight sun. Travel green

A GUIDE FOR THE CONSCIOUS TRAVELLER IN THE NARVIK REGION We encourage you to travel as consciously and sustainably as possible. The Narvik region is currently developing a Sustainable Destination label, highlighting the balance between the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism. This label will – importantly – help improve sustainability on tourism destinations. This list of advice may help you to help us. 1. THROW RUBBISH IN THE RUBBISH BINS Take care of nature and do not leave any rubbish behind. Bring your rubbish to the nearest waste bin.

4. RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY

8. SHOW RESPECT

It is forbidden to camp closer than 150 metres from a house or cabin.

Be thoughtful towards other travellers and the local people. Do not disturb animals or birds.

5. CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY WITH A LOW-IMPACT FOOTPRINT

2. CHOOSE LOCAL PROVIDERS OF ACTIVITIES

Select activities that do not diminish or destroy the richness of nature areas

Whatever activity you book during your stay, the experience will certainly be better if you do it with a guide or a local provider who knows the place and its history. It is also for your own safety.

6. FOLLOW ESTABLISHED PATHS AND AVOID THE CREATION OF NEW PATHS

3. LOWER YOUR EMISSIONS

Drive according to road conditions. Pay attention and be considerate of other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Always wear visible reflectors when walking in the dark.

Try the short-travelled, seasonal food and local products made in the region.

10. GET TO KNOW THE LOCAL TRADITIONS AND HISTORY To really experience a place, you should get to know the culture and the past it derives from. Visit one of the museums, and if possible, take part in an activity which has storytelling as part of their offer.

Photo: Rune Dahl

Photo: Roar Nillson

Photo: Michael Ulriksen

Use public transport, such as bus and train, whenever possible. If you are going somewhere with short distances, try to walk or cycle. It will be an experience in itself.

7. BE CONSIDERATE IN TRAFFIC

9. BUY LOCAL FOOD AND PRODUCTS

PORT OF NARVIK

Welcome to Narvik - A peninsula surrounded by fjords and mountains. Narvik is so much more than just beautiful nature! It is the home of Ofoten railway, the Navvies, Polar Park, Alpine mountains and its unique war history – to mention some. It is also the official Norwegian candidate in the bid to host the 2027 World Championships in alpine skiing. Narvik, located just 45km from the Swedish border, was the first industrial town in Northern Norway as the construction of the Ofoten Railway was completed. A town centre was formed, and its unique culture was, and still is, influenced by Swedish navvies, British engineers and sailors from across the world.

TRANSPORT HUB SEA

RAIL

The Port of Narvik is central in the development of Narvik as a national and international transport and logistics centre. The harbour is ice-free all year round and well protected from wind and adverse weather. Narvik is the largest port in the Barents Region shipping more than 23 million tonnes through our facilities annually. In 2005, the Port of Narvik was given status as a “Motorways of the Sea” port by the EU. In Norway, only Oslo has this status in addition to Narvik. Narvik and Ofotbanen are also on the socalled TEN-T CORE Network, which is regarded as the main network for transport within the EU.

Narvik is the only city in Northern Norway (north of Bodø) with a railway connection. On-dock rail connects with the international network through Sweden linking us to southern Scandinavia and central Europe, as well as Asia and Russia. 10 iron-ore trains, 3 cargo trains and 2 passenger trains arrive and depart from Narvik daily.

ROAD Narvik is a junction for the national and regional road network, with the E6 running north to south and the E10 running east to west. With fish being a major product exported

Port of Narvik

via Narvik, the road connection east (Lofoten/Vesterålen) and north (Troms) is now 20km shorter due to the new Hålogaland Bridge crossing the Ofot Fjord.

AIR Narvik’s regional airport is Harstad/Narvik Evenes and it is only one of three wide body airports in Norway with the capacity to take down any size plane. There are approx. 15 daily arrivals/departures of passenger planes from Evenes as well as cargo and military traffic.

Cruise

CRUISE PORT NARVIK Northern Norway are approaching half a million disembarking passengers annually, an increase of nearly 70 per cent since 2010. While growth is naturally one of our goals, it is just as important to develop good shore excursions.

NARVIK Narvik as a cruise destination has steadily grown, and with the new developments, such as new cable car and new cruise pier in combination with some unique USPs, Narvik as a cruise destination is renewing itself. The new cruise pier is located 400 metres from the town centre. It is 150 metres long and can without problems accommodate ships of up to 350 metres in length.

16

TURNAROUND Another goal is to attract more turnaround operations and it is our pleasure to introduce this new turnaround concept for cruising in Arctic waters under the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights. This is a truly unique opportunity to see this part of the world from a different perspective. Rural, rugged with wild nature and fauna. The colour spectre of the Arctic light reflected in the fjords, mountains and glaciers along this route gives this cruise an exceptional setting. The Port of Narvik is only 40 minutes from Harstad/Narvik Evenes regional airport, which is only one of two wide body airports in Northern Norway (the other being Banak in Finnmark). Narvik also has the infrastructure on the quayside to handle the busses

Contact post@cruisenarvik.no for any questions or additional information.

and the people. In combination with excursions on offer we believe this offers a unique opportunity to explore our region.

OVERLAND Narvik is only a three-hour drive from Lofoten, Vesterülen and Tromsø. Its location is ideal for cruise lines to offer overland tours between these destinations, meeting the ship at the next destination. Several of our excursion tours are located between these destinations, making it attractive for the guest to go exploring.

TRANSIT Narvik has a great selection of activities/excursions for all ages, both summer and winter. With a combination of volume tours and boutique excursions we welcome all cruise lines to Narvik.

ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH ASTONISHING ARCTIC NATURE AS A BACKDROP Norwegians are born with skis on their feet. In Narvik, alpine skiing occupies a big place in local hearts and the town itself is known as a skier’s paradise. The skiing season runs from December to May in Narvikfjellet ski resort, a playground for families and adrenaline seekers. And Narvik’s gemstone is developing further. In November 2018, Narvik and North Norway were accepted as Norway’s candidate in a bid to host the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027. Here is why we believe North Norway, and Narvik, is perfect place to host the world’s second largest winter sports event: 1.IT IS GOING TO BE SPECTACULAR!

Narvik is situated between steep mountains and pristine, Arctic fjords. Mountains, fjords and the town make up a unique trinity that provides spectacular scenery for a world championship.

2. FOCUS ON THE ARCTIC

Northern Norway is the centre of the Arctic. One of the aims of the Alpine World Ski Championships is to focus on the opportunities and challenges facing the Arctic Region.

24

Contact post@visitnarvik.com for booking anytime of the year

3. SKIING FACILITIES RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOWN.

Narvik, in comparison to alpine resorts, is a relatively big town (population 18 000). In Narvik you are close to nature, yet have all the facilities of a city, including comfortable hotels, shopping centres and cosy restaurants. 4. IT’S NOT ONLY NARVIK, IT’S ENTIRE NORTHERN NORWAY.

The whole of Northern Norway supports and stands behind the plans for the Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik. A unified region for common benefits.

v i s i t n a r v i k .c o m

VM 2020

5. THE EFFECTS WILL BE IMMENSE.

9. WORLD CHAMPION MEDIA COVERAGE.

Narvik will be the leading winter sports destination in the North Calotte region. An Alpine World Ski Championships will be a showcase for tourism, energy, environmental and marine industries.

The media coverage will satisfy viewers who are used to traditional television broadcasts, in addition to be creative and up to speed on new media outlets. Available on all screens with spectacular scenes for film and photo.

6.A TRIGGER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ALPINE SPORT

A World Ski Championships will contribute to bringing up a new generation of top alpinists. Perhaps it will contribute towards North Norwegian talent taking the podium in future events of alpine skiing? 7. A ROLE MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE EVENT MANAGEMENT

The Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik will be the world’s most environmentally friendly winter sport event. It will establish a new standard that will be an inspiration for other organisers around the world. 8. A FANTASTIC FESTIVITY

10. AN ECONOMICALLY STABLE PROJECT

An event of this sort is costly. Financial support from FIS is important. But the owners of Narvikfjellet has demonstrated great will to develop the resort regardless of this event. Also, the Norwegian state has a tradition of giving grants to major international championships. The Alpine World Ski Championships can be realised with a profit. In March 2020 Narvik is host for host World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships, and in 2022 we will find out who will host big event of 2027. Send your support to Northern Norway and Narvik.

The event will be a fantastic fest for the people, with residents and visitors gathering at the compact Narvik central square daily.

The arctic light

THE ARCTIC LIGHT Nights that last for 20 hours and a total absence of sun for many weeks. When the Arctic light is at its most sparse, it is at its most beautiful. Only when you move away from the illuminated streets and corners will you discover the secret. The eerie Arctic light of darkness.

If you take a seat along the coast on the stones you will be served a fleeting performance where the shades, contrasts and colour range are constantly moving and changing. The highlights can be brief so it’s about being there when the rays are dancing.

The Narvik Region offers something of everything. Blazing Northern Lights, never-ending summer days, steep mountains, and countless fjords full of life. Quite simply an eldorado for a nature photographer. Michael, photographer, @michael_ulriksen

The arctic light

GREAT REPERTOIRE Without any effort, she moves across the dark sky from the autumn time in September through all the coldest winter months. The repertoire is large, and the beat and tone vary. Some evenings she is moody and moves slowly and monotonously. At other times, she lets her hair down and releases all her secrets as she sweeps across the sky like a party rocket. Her green charismatic costume is always on, and when she really wants to show off, she flashes the shades of red, purple and yellow. Whoever thought of calling it the period of darkness? Not those who have really experienced the Arctic light!

THE ARCTIC PALETTE As for the winter sky, the Narvik region really offers the entire colour palette from the warm tones gilding the low vault of the sky towards Lofoten in the west, via the more measured pastel colours over the mountains in the north, to the wonderful deep blue hue that envelops everything and everyone. Then, darkness once again takes over and gives way to everyone’s evergreen flame the dancing Aurora.

The greatest chance of success is having those who chase her performances together with professional tour operators and guides. They know her well and know where to look for her.

Photo: Michael ulriksen

The special thing about the lady Aurora, whose last name is most often Borealis, is that she is always followed by groups of fans. It is her own fan club that comes from all over the world to follow her performances on the polar sky scene.

THE WINTER FESTIVAL Once a year, one town in Northern Norway bursts into life just as the sun once again conquers the dark arctic winter. For nine days, the whole of Narvik doesn’t sleep, and everyone is thrown into a joyful cultural festival filled with concerts, dance, theatre, art, exhibitions and street performance. Visiting Narvik during the festival is like time-

travelling back to the end of the 19th century, when the world’s northernmost railway from Kiruna in Sweden to Narvik was built. Under the Northern Lights, the midnight sun and during winter storms – the Navvies relentlessly shaped a railway line through the Arctic mountains. Honouring these achievements, everyone, both young and old, dresses up in historic clothes.

SIGHTSEEING TOUR

MIDNIGHT SUN TOUR

NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR

Our sightseeing tour takes you on a round trip from Narvik to Riksgränsen (Sweden). We offer two daily departures. Available also for charter and larger groups on request.

During the summer season we give you the opportunity to explore this vast arctic landscape in the blazing light that only the midnight sun brings. Our guided evening tour provide you with an unforgettable expereince of white, intoxicating summer nights.

In the winter season the midnight sun is replaced by the opposite natural phenomenon, Polar Nights. That means the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. This lack of natural daylight gives us the perfect scenery for experiencing the Northern Lights from one of our comfortable train seats. This tour is also guided.

Fjellkysten

EXPLORING THE MYSTICAL SALANGEN CAVES On this tour you will meet running water with underground waterfalls, you have to crawl under low rock roofs and crawl past the underground river. The experience of being underground in total darkness creates a very special feeling. The caves are located approximately 5 km from Fjellkysten hotel. We will drive the guests here, and we’ll walk to the opening of the caves. By the main cave opening we will light a big bonfire where the guests will be served a hot beverage and a sweet snack. There are quite a few cave-openings, but we usually go in the opening of what we call the main-cave. The opening of the main-cave takes us inside the mountain where we’ll be met by running water. We then follow this underground river until we hit an underground waterfall before we return. Catch and Cook

CATCH AND COOK:

ABOUT VEGARD STORMO AND HIS COOKING PHILOSOPHY The Narvik region is situated between high mountains and deep fjords, where nature is rich in both pure ingredients and unique flavours. In recent years, the region has established itself as a unique food destination with varied restaurants and some of the region’s best wilderness chefs. One of them is Sami-descendent Vegard Stormo, food and beverage manager at Scandic Narvik Hotel. His passion for seasonal and short-travelled food benefits locals and travellers alike. WHEN PASSION AND PROFESSION FIND EACH OTHER

Photo: Leif Milling

If you are to explore the nature in the region, you will quite possible encounter Vegard at some point. Always near some delicacy of the Arctic nature; by the seaside collecting sea urchins and shells, fishing or hunting, or in the forests, picking mushrooms and berries. All ingredients are carefully selected to

be prepared and served to the guests at Tind restaurant at Scandic Hotel. Or outdoors. Several years ago a Chinese film team was visiting, and especially for them, he hosted dinner right by the coast, just outside of Narvik. He arranged for a diver to suddenly rise from the sea with fresh sea urchins, shells and seaweed, which was all added to the casserole cooking on open fire.

NATURE ON THE PLATE Vegard’s cooking philosophy is to minimise the processing of food and bring natural ingredients right into the pot. In his role as the hotel’s food and beverage manager, he contributes to treating good ingredients according to old traditions and presenting them in a modern and innovative manner. The calendar is an important

v i s i t n a r v i k .c o m

guideline for Vegard. The tastes and smells in the menu reflect what you find and see in the mountains and fjords around the hotel. The sea, the meadows, the mountains and the marshes. King crab, reindeer, and delicious cloud berries. The wild sheep, reindeer and the juicy berries in the autumn, the famous skreimølja (seasonal cod fish served with its liver and roe) in the winter, the halibut in the spring time and the summer’s delicious mountain fish.

EVERYTHING IS A STORY. ESPECIALLY THE FOOD Vegard is dedicated to serving food with good stories that lift and carry the overall experience. Thus, it is important where the food on you plate comes from and how it got there.

This philosophy has been with me throughout my career as a chef. I have grown up outdoors and the joy of all the ingredients nature offers. In addition, I am a Sami descendant and have been very interested in learning about the Sami culture and our bond with nature. I would like to pass this on to our guests and staff to increase local knowledge and culture. In ancient Sami culture, harvesting from nature was a necessity. Although the reindeer was the basis of life, small game, fish, herbs, mushrooms and berries were important food supplements, and a medium of exchange for other commodities. It is important to respect and love the nature we depend on. We focus on good, short-travelled ingredients, sustainability, the environment, and, not least, happy guests and employees, says Vegard.
